    Book Description

An incomparably rich source of period information, The Southern Debate over Slavery offers a representative sampling of the thousands of petitions about issues of race and slavery that southerners submitted to their state legislatures between the American Revolution and the Civil War.

These petitions, filed by slaveholders and nonslaveholders, slaves and free blacks, women and men, abolitionists and staunch defenders of slavery, constitute a uniquely important primary source. Petitioners were compelled to present the most accurate and fully documented case they could, since their claims would be subject to public scrutiny and legal verification. Unlike the many reminiscences and autobiographies of the period, these petitions record with great immediacy and minute detail the dynamics, common understandings, and legal restrictions and parameters that shaped southern society during this period.

Arranged chronologically, with their original spelling and idiosyncratic phraseology intact, these documents reveal the grim and brutal nature of human bondage, the fears of whites who lived among large concentrations of blacks, and the workings of the complicated legal system designed to control blacks. They tell about the yearning of bondspeople to gain their freedom, the attitudes of freed blacks who were forced to leave the South, and the efforts of African Americans to overcome harsh and restrictive laws. They also underscore the unique situation of free women of color and the reliance of manumitted (formally freed) blacks on their former owners for protection, travel passes, guardianship papers, and reference letters.

Astonishingly intimate and frank, The Southern Debate over Slavery illuminates how slavery penetrated nearly every aspect of southern life and how various groups of southerners responded to the difficulties they confronted as a result of living in a slave society.

      Book Description

This book looks at petitions over the last five centuries to reconstruct the lives and opinions of "humble" petitioners. Since Pharaonic times, governments have allowed their subjects to voice opinions in the form of petitions, which have demanded a favor or the redressment of an injustice. To be effective, a petition had to mention the request, usually a motivation and always the name or names of the petitioners. As a result, grievances of ordinary people which were not written down anywhere else are now stored safely in the archives of the authorities to which the petitions were addressed. The petitions considered in this book, which come from all over the globe, offer rich and valuable sources for social historians.

            Book Description

At South Indian village funerals, women cry and lament, men drink and laugh, and untouchables sing and joke to the beat of their drums. No One Cries for the Dead offers an original interpretation of these behaviors, which seem almost unrelated to the dead and to the funeral event. Isabelle Clark-Decès demonstrates that rather than mourn the dead, these Tamil funeral songs first and foremost give meaning to the caste, gender, and personal experiences of the performers.

                      Book Description

Learn to use PowerPoint in ways you never thought possible. Marcovitz shows how, providing practical instruction for using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) to create learning environments and educational materials that support and enhance student success. With the widespread availability of PowerPoint (every copy beginning with version 1997 comes with VBA built-in) schools have all the tools they need to create powerful and interactive multimedia resources. The true power of multimedia lies in its ability to engage students' minds. Professional multimedia tools are too difficult to learn, too expensive, or both, and although many teachers and students use HyperStudio or PowerPoint to develop multimedia projects, these projects often lack true interactivity. Using VBA with PowerPoint gives teachers and students an accessible way to easily create interactive multimedia resources and projects. After introducing the basics of educational planning, the design process, and the benefits of designing and using multimedia, this book offers the practical knowledge you need to create powerful educational resources. Learn to create projects that include:
                    • Pictures, videos, recorded voices, and links to Web sites
                    • Interactive menus
                    • Quizzes and short-answer questions with automatic user-feedback
                    • The ability to score quizzes
                    • The ability to keep track of which presentation sections have or haven't been visited
                    • The ability to allow the user to type and alter slides during the presentation
                    • And much more The possibilities are endless. Anyone with basic PowerPoint skills can use this book to create powerful educational material for themselves, their colleagues, their students, or their own children.

                      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good for one specific aspect.......2006-11-11

This book is an excellent resource if you want to learn how to use Visual Basic to write interactive quizzes in PowerPoint. It is definitely aimed at educators. There are better books out there for learning PowerPoint, but this book is definitely outstanding in this one area.

5 out of 5 stars The Power of a Programmer (without being one).......2006-07-17

If you're like me, experienced with PowerPoint, but not a programmer, then taking a trip into the world of vba scripting with David Marcovitz's "Powerful PowerPoint for Educators" makes it easy and enjoyable. This book is like having a conversation with the author who has "been there and done it" in terms of developing script that is practical and useful in so many PowerPoint projects you may need to develop. Among other objectives, I had the need to incorporate an interactive leadership style self-assessment in my cbt of the same name, and thanks to David's book I was able to let the user make his/her selections (as well as change them too), track scores, and then take those scores on to subsequent slides to discern the meaning of each of them (not to mention printing as well as saving those scores based on user preference). And of course, all along the way, I learned a great deal about other scripting options that proved useful in this application as well as for future projects.
If you're at the stage where you need to use vba scripting, this is the book that should be your primer. It will take you where you need to go!

                      2 out of 5 stars Improperly Titled.......2006-07-11

This book is not really properly titled -- it should be "Using Scripting to Make PowerPoint Interactive." The author makes it clear (part way through the book) that he is not writing this for people with programming knowledge -- all he intends for you to do is copy the scripts he provides and use them as he intends. He even discourages the reader to read what little is written about programming.

In addition, the $45 price tag is ludicrously high. This book is worth $19.95 tops.

5 out of 5 stars Only book on VBA devoted to PowerPoint.......2004-04-29

Every computer coordinator and interested computer teacher, anyone who does instructional presentations / training, and college level professors who are accustomed to using PowerPoint and those constructing online programs for medical CEU programs, now using such programs as Agility Presenter or Appraiso would benefit from this book. This method of using VBA with PowerPoint truly allows for authentic, interactive, memorable, meaningful, and fun e-learning with a program many trainers already use. Sure you can do this with Flash, but most instructors in other fields than computer technology really don't have time for that learning curve. Maybe the computer teacher has time, but not the social studies teacher nor the medical professor teaching second year medical students interview techniques, for example. As an instructor it would be great to provide an additional e-learning module on CD that you created with PowerPoint and VBA. It will leave a lasting impression.
I have searched many a thousand paged books for dribs and drabs of VBA on PowerPoint. This book immediately gives you useful, real world problems and gets right to the point in about 180+ pages and contains more information than many thousand page books that cost considerably more. The author also provides a Web site with actual samples of the programs that work in case you run into difficulties.
I went on a newsgroup site to ask a VBA question about PowerPoint before Amazon sent my book. Normally I receive answers that are completely beyond anything I need or want. It just so happens that the book's author answered my question and helped me solve my problem and told me about his book, at which point I realized I had recently ordered it. I often rate books, but I rarely write reviews. This one deserves all 5 stars and then add five more! I can't say enough about it. It is one of a kind.

A must-have companion to Heimlich and Pittelman's bestselling "Semantic Mapping." The human mind categorizes information in memory so it can be retrieved easily. By capitalizing on this process, semantic feature analysis helps students learn naturally. The authors relate classroom applications through sample lessons to illustrate the breadth of successful applications. Teachers in K-8 classrooms will find the numerous examples of completed grids helpful.

Integrating both theory and practice with assessment to make learning outcomes possible, this text is an invaluable reference for teachers who develop their own instructional materials or are asked to select software and web sites for their students. Educators from across the United States offer their thoughts on technology in every aspect of education, from science to the fine arts and from mathematics to special needs students. Presented are example software packages and Internet sites that have been accumulated, reviewed, and assessed by these education professionals.

                              4 out of 5 stars I was pleasantly surprised.......2003-05-09

When I reviewed the promotional literature for this book claiming that it was "a one-stop, easy-to-use resource guide that acts as an enabler and catalyst for teachers unsure about how and where to start utilizing technology in the classroom to maximize the teaching and learning experience." I was somewhat skeptical. However, after reading "Challenges of Teaching with Technology Across the Curriculum: Issues and Solutions" I had to conclude that the book does what it claims it would do. This book focuses on developing technology-based curriculum instruction and technology-based content for the P-12 curriculum. It presents an 8 step model for creating technology-based instruction based on the education literature - Lesson Goals and Targets, Learning Objectives, Materials and Resources, Initiating Activities, Developmental Activities, Concluding Activity, Technology Infusion, and Student Learning Evaluation.

After a discussion of the application and integration of word processing, spreadsheets, databases, graphics/paint and draw, and internet into use in educational curriculums, the book then presents sample applications of these technologies in eight subject areas: Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, Language Arts, Foreign Languages, Fine Arts, Technology, and Special Education. Each of these chapters discussed historical development of technology applications, a description of current technology and professional standards, and provided rubrics for evaluating potential software packages and web sites. They also provided recommendations for educational software, and tips on useful web sites for each of the eight subject areas. In the beginning and end of the book, Tomei provides some tips on how teachers can design instructional units that incorporate technologies and lesson ideas for each of the technology applications that are grade-appropriate.

One things about the book that I particularly noticed is how these lessons push the student use of technology to the lower grades (i.e. Power point skills and exercises from pre-kindergarten through grade 5), thereby potentially reducing the time needed to spend on the in higher grades and increasing the receptivity of these students to on-line learning in their future studies (my area of expertise). I can see where this book would be particularly useful for elementary school teachers since they often have to teach a variety of subjects and the exercises could be implemented into classroom settings fairly easily. Because of the common structure to each of the discipline-area chapters the book was easy to read, but doesn't have to be read closely for teachers to be able to use its ideas and tools. The one potential concern I had with the book is common to on that seeks to be both practical and current. With the rapid development cycles often associated with software and/or websites, how frequently will this book need to be updated? Overall, if you are a teacher (particularly elementary school) new to incorporating technological applications into your classroom, I'd strongly recommend this book as a starting point. Also, if you are a college or university education professor who teaches technology adoption to these aspiring teachers, I would recommend it for adoption into your courses.

                              4 out of 5 stars I was pleasantly surprised.......2003-05-08

When I read the claim in the promotional literature for this book that it was as "a one-stop, easy-to-use resource guide that acts as an enabler and catalyst for teachers unsure about how and where to start utilizing technology in the classroom to maximize the teaching and learning experience", I was admittedly skeptical. However after reading the book I would agree that it actually fulfills this claim.

Challenges of Teaching with Technology Across the Curriculum focuses on developing technology-based curriculum instruction and technology-based content for the P-12 curriculum. The first chapter presents an 8 phase model for the incorporation of technology into a curriculum - Lesson Goals and Targets, Learning Objectives, Materials and Resources, Visual-based, Web-based) Initiating Activities, Developmental Activities, Concluding Activity, Technology Infusion, Student Learning Evaluation. The second chapter addresses the integration of word processing, spreadsheets, databases, graphics/paint and draw, and internet into use in their curriculum. These are followed by chapters that explore technology integration and incorporation in eight subject areas: Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, Language Arts, Foreign Languages, Fine Arts, Technology, and Special Education. Each of these chapters discussed historical development of technology applications, described current technology and professional standards, provided rubrics for evaluating potential software packages and web sites, and recommended software and web sites for their respective discipline.

I see several potential benefits of this book. The book was easy to read, but it doesn't have to be read closely for teachers to be able to use its ideas and tools. The examples and lessons provided push the student use of technology to the lower grades (i.e. Power point skills and exercises from pre-kindergarten through grade 5), thereby potentially reducing the time needed to spend on the in higher grades and increasing the receptivity of these students to on-line learning in college (my area of expertise). I could see where the book would be particularly useful for elementary school teachers since they often have to teach a variety of subjects. About the only concern I had with the book is common to any book that seeks to be both current and practical: With the sometimes rapid changes in the development of software and/or websites, how frequently would this book need to be updated? Overall, if you're a P-12 teacher who is wanting to learn how you might quickly incorporate technology into your classroom, Challenges of Teaching with Technology Across the Curriculum would be a good place to start.
