The Southern Debate over Slavery: vol. 1: Petitions to Southern Legislatures, 1778-1864 (Southern Debate Over Slavery)
Manufacturer: University of Illinois Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0252026322 |
Book Description
An incomparably rich source of period information, The Southern Debate over Slavery offers a representative sampling of the thousands of petitions about issues of race and slavery that southerners submitted to their state legislatures between the American Revolution and the Civil War.These petitions, filed by slaveholders and nonslaveholders, slaves and free blacks, women and men, abolitionists and staunch defenders of slavery, constitute a uniquely important primary source. Petitioners were compelled to present the most accurate and fully documented case they could, since their claims would be subject to public scrutiny and legal verification. Unlike the many reminiscences and autobiographies of the period, these petitions record with great immediacy and minute detail the dynamics, common understandings, and legal restrictions and parameters that shaped southern society during this period.
Arranged chronologically, with their original spelling and idiosyncratic phraseology intact, these documents reveal the grim and brutal nature of human bondage, the fears of whites who lived among large concentrations of blacks, and the workings of the complicated legal system designed to control blacks. They tell about the yearning of bondspeople to gain their freedom, the attitudes of freed blacks who were forced to leave the South, and the efforts of African Americans to overcome harsh and restrictive laws. They also underscore the unique situation of free women of color and the reliance of manumitted (formally freed) blacks on their former owners for protection, travel passes, guardianship papers, and reference letters.
Astonishingly intimate and frank, The Southern Debate over Slavery illuminates how slavery penetrated nearly every aspect of southern life and how various groups of southerners responded to the difficulties they confronted as a result of living in a slave society.

Petitions in Social History (International Review of Social History Supplements)
Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0521013224 |
Book Description
This book looks at petitions over the last five centuries to reconstruct the lives and opinions of "humble" petitioners. Since Pharaonic times, governments have allowed their subjects to voice opinions in the form of petitions, which have demanded a favor or the redressment of an injustice. To be effective, a petition had to mention the request, usually a motivation and always the name or names of the petitioners. As a result, grievances of ordinary people which were not written down anywhere else are now stored safely in the archives of the authorities to which the petitions were addressed. The petitions considered in this book, which come from all over the globe, offer rich and valuable sources for social historians.

No One Cries for the Dead: Tamil Dirges, Rowdy Songs, and Graveyard Petitions
Isabelle Clark-Decès Manufacturer: University of California Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0520243145 |
Book Description
At South Indian village funerals, women cry and lament, men drink and laugh, and untouchables sing and joke to the beat of their drums. No One Cries for the Dead offers an original interpretation of these behaviors, which seem almost unrelated to the dead and to the funeral event. Isabelle Clark-Decès demonstrates that rather than mourn the dead, these Tamil funeral songs first and foremost give meaning to the caste, gender, and personal experiences of the performers.

I was pleasantly surprised.......2003-05-09
After a discussion of the application and integration of word processing, spreadsheets, databases, graphics/paint and draw, and internet into use in educational curriculums, the book then presents sample applications of these technologies in eight subject areas: Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, Language Arts, Foreign Languages, Fine Arts, Technology, and Special Education. Each of these chapters discussed historical development of technology applications, a description of current technology and professional standards, and provided rubrics for evaluating potential software packages and web sites. They also provided recommendations for educational software, and tips on useful web sites for each of the eight subject areas. In the beginning and end of the book, Tomei provides some tips on how teachers can design instructional units that incorporate technologies and lesson ideas for each of the technology applications that are grade-appropriate.
One things about the book that I particularly noticed is how these lessons push the student use of technology to the lower grades (i.e. Power point skills and exercises from pre-kindergarten through grade 5), thereby potentially reducing the time needed to spend on the in higher grades and increasing the receptivity of these students to on-line learning in their future studies (my area of expertise). I can see where this book would be particularly useful for elementary school teachers since they often have to teach a variety of subjects and the exercises could be implemented into classroom settings fairly easily. Because of the common structure to each of the discipline-area chapters the book was easy to read, but doesn't have to be read closely for teachers to be able to use its ideas and tools. The one potential concern I had with the book is common to on that seeks to be both practical and current. With the rapid development cycles often associated with software and/or websites, how frequently will this book need to be updated? Overall, if you are a teacher (particularly elementary school) new to incorporating technological applications into your classroom, I'd strongly recommend this book as a starting point. Also, if you are a college or university education professor who teaches technology adoption to these aspiring teachers, I would recommend it for adoption into your courses.
I was pleasantly surprised.......2003-05-08
Challenges of Teaching with Technology Across the Curriculum focuses on developing technology-based curriculum instruction and technology-based content for the P-12 curriculum. The first chapter presents an 8 phase model for the incorporation of technology into a curriculum - Lesson Goals and Targets, Learning Objectives, Materials and Resources, Visual-based, Web-based) Initiating Activities, Developmental Activities, Concluding Activity, Technology Infusion, Student Learning Evaluation. The second chapter addresses the integration of word processing, spreadsheets, databases, graphics/paint and draw, and internet into use in their curriculum. These are followed by chapters that explore technology integration and incorporation in eight subject areas: Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, Language Arts, Foreign Languages, Fine Arts, Technology, and Special Education. Each of these chapters discussed historical development of technology applications, described current technology and professional standards, provided rubrics for evaluating potential software packages and web sites, and recommended software and web sites for their respective discipline.
I see several potential benefits of this book. The book was easy to read, but it doesn't have to be read closely for teachers to be able to use its ideas and tools. The examples and lessons provided push the student use of technology to the lower grades (i.e. Power point skills and exercises from pre-kindergarten through grade 5), thereby potentially reducing the time needed to spend on the in higher grades and increasing the receptivity of these students to on-line learning in college (my area of expertise). I could see where the book would be particularly useful for elementary school teachers since they often have to teach a variety of subjects. About the only concern I had with the book is common to any book that seeks to be both current and practical: With the sometimes rapid changes in the development of software and/or websites, how frequently would this book need to be updated? Overall, if you're a P-12 teacher who is wanting to learn how you might quickly incorporate technology into your classroom, Challenges of Teaching with Technology Across the Curriculum would be a good place to start.
