Book Description
In Rabbi David G. Dalin's controversial new book, he explodes the newly resurrected, widely accepted, yet utterly bankrupt smearing of Pope Pius XII, whom Jewish survivors of the Holocaust considered a righteous gentile.

OUTSTANDING WORK!.......2007-09-09
Thank you Rabbi Dalin for telling the true story of Pope Pius XII. I give this book 5 bright stars and would give it more if possible. Pope Pius XII had many Jewish friends, and did much to help save the lives of many Jews before and during the Holocaust. The fact that many have chosen to slander this saintly man's name is a sign of the devil's work.
The cause for beatification of Pope Pius XII took an important step forward on May 8, 2007 when the Congregation for the Causes of Saints voted to approve a decree that the life of the late Pontiff showed "heroic virtue." Although I am sure he is a saint in heaven, hopefully it won't be long before he is declared a saint by the Church.
I highly recommend this book to everyone who is interested in the true story of Pius XII. It is a true historical account of the evil of Hitler and the Nazis. Also, chapter 6 includes a great deal of very interesting information about Muslims and their anti-Semitic beliefs and teachings.
How to review this?.......2007-07-30
Call me obtuse if you want. I just can't think of any way of reviewing this without sounding preachy, or as some loving people say: as a bloody Catholic fundamentalist.
My review is simply this: you hate this Pope in particular or Catholicism in general? Then by all means, go buy and read the Harry Potter series. After having read 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows I can safely say that Harry Potter is a veritable classic of universal literature. Yes, I used the word 'classic', as in worthy of studying in class - as in school, universities, etc. And and I used 'universal' as in that EVERYONE should read those books.
To those people I prefer to recommend Harry Potter because this book is basically a well-documented book defending the REAL PRO-semitic actions of this late Pope, as well as the historical significance and repercussions, including of course, all the false accusations laid on against him and the reasons behind those. And to top it all off, is written by a jewish Rabbi. So you either take this as it is, or you simply will risk high-pressure problems.
Harry Potter on the other hand is safe, superbly written adventure, and with a real profound study of human nature.
So, off you go then!
Important and useful that a rabbi would write this book.......2007-05-26
We are getting to the place where anti-Catholic bigotry is one of the few forms of group hatred that is still OK. In a society where any other form of bigotry, or even a suspcious of the same, is viewed with implacable oppositon, it is still pretty much OK to spread the grossest lies and distortions of the Church and its long, complex historical record. In the same way that the only fact most recently educated students know about World War II was that the evil Americans interned innocent Japanese civilians, the only fact which most people know about the Church is a grossly exagerrated and distorted view of the Spanish Inquisition.
In this context, it is possible for most absurd lies to get a great deal of traction. Many people, particularly Jews, believe that the Pope during World War II, Pius XII, actively supported Hitler. They think he was a buddy of Hitler's and helped to round up Jews for the gas chambers. Most Americans find nothing implausible in this story, so, since a few lunatic writers have put it out there, they believe it.
This story is, and always has been, an absurd, malicious lie with absolutely nothing behind it but hatred of the Church. Pius XII was always a determined opponent of Hitler. The Church, as an organization -- and the Pope heads the Church -- saved more Jews from the Holaucaust than any other single institution. At a time when every one was sitting on their hands, or looking the other way, the Church acted. Jews at the time, and in the State of Israel, understood that the Church was one of their only friends in ths time of great horror. To turn this record around, and to argue that the Pope was a friend of Hitler's, has as much validity and legitimacy as those who deny that the Holaucaust (but hope that it will happen again), argue that Bush and Mossad were behind 9/11 and who otherwise wear tinfoil on their head while reading the National Inquirer.
That said, it was very helpful that David Dalin wrote this book, because he is a Jewish Rabbi. By its nature, this kind of defense is best done when it is not a Catholic doing it, but a Jew. It is very hard to accuse a rabbi of being biased in favor of the Church or indifferent to the fate of the Jews. It is very good to see people like Rabbi Dalin reach across religious lines, purely and simply to uphold the truth. It makes me think that, maybe despite everything, there is some chance that people of good will really can unite against those who want to use lies to tear down everything that is good and decent in the world.
Unbalanced defense .......2007-05-11
We should be careful that analyses of Pius do not become attacks on the Church. In the last 50 years, the Church has done many wonderful things to help the poor and serve the world; many parishes have kitchens to serve the homeless. That said, this does not excuse Pius or provide a defense. There are a few common arguments.
1. Nothing more could be done.
This is absurd. Obviously if more people protested, the scope and depth of killing would have been reduced. The Nazi killing machine was efficient simply because it enjoyed the support of virtually all of the German Christian population. Protests could have lessened what occurred.
2. But what would happen to us
Some suggest Catholics could have been attacked. Perhaps. But ultimately moral acts do not include torturing and killing others to save your own skin.
3. Some Jews liked him
Most holocaust analysts do not defend Pius- See Abandonement of the Jews. Gilbert, The Holocaust
To simply cobble together a few statements of Jewish statesmen eager for Vatican recognition of Israel shows little.
4. He helped save Italian Jews. Pius did help Italian Jews and should be commended. However, German Catholics tortured, starved, and killed, Jewish men, women, and children. For every Italian Jew saved, there were 10 killed with the aid of German Catholics and other Christians.
5. They wouldn't have listened This is the most specious arguments- suggesting Catholics, who listened to the Pope on matters of all types, raising children, marriage- would have ignored their Pope had he spoken out against murder.
6. He did say some things.
Unfortunately, when the Pope did speak, he made sure to speak in such vague and obligue terms that it accomplished nothing. Stop murdering Jewish women and children would have accomplished something but was never said.
It's a shame it had to be written!.......2007-01-10
The book is a well written and well documented exposition of the truth about Pope Pius XII's official and personal behavior toward the Nazis and those they persecuted. Rabii Dalin has earned the thanks and respect of every Catholic who seeks truth in a world too full of hate and prejudice.

This devastating account of the ecclesiastical career of Eugenio Pacelli (1876-1958), who became Pope Pius XII in 1939, is all the more powerful because British historian John Cornwell maintains throughout a measured though strongly critical tone. After World War II, murmurs of Pacelli's callous indifference to the plight of Europe's Jews began to be heard. A noted commentator on Catholic issues, Cornwell began research for this book believing that "if his full story were told, Pius XII's pontificate would be exonerated." Instead, he emerged from the Vatican archives in a state of "moral shock," concluding that Pacelli displayed anti-Semitic tendencies early on and that his drive to promote papal absolutism inexorably led him to collaboration with fascist leaders. Cornwell convincingly depicts Cardinal Secretary of State Pacelli pursuing Vatican diplomatic goals that crippled Germany's large Catholic political party, which might otherwise have stymied Hitler's worst excesses. The author's condemnation has special force because he portrays the admittedly eccentric Pacelli not as a monster but as a symptom of a historic wrong turn in the Catholic Church. He meticulously builds his case for the painful conclusion that "Pacelli's failure to respond to the enormity of the Holocaust was more than a personal failure, it was a failure of the papal office itself and the prevailing culture of Catholicism." --Wendy Smith
Book Description
Eugenio Pacelli, Pope Pius XII, has long been the subject of controversy over his failure to speak out against Hitler's Final Solution. In Hitler's Pope, award-winning journalist and Roman Catholic John Cornwell shows that, even well before the Holocaust, Pope Pius XII was instrumental in negotiating an accord that helped the Nazis rise to unhindered power--and sealed the fate of the Jews in Europe.
Drawing upon secret Vatican and Jesuit archives to which he had exclusive access, Cornwell tells the full, tragic story of how narcissism, longstanding personal antipathy for the Jews, and political and spiritual ambition combined to make Pius the most dangerous churchman in history. A firm and final indictment of Pius XII's papacy, Hitler's Pope is also a searing exploration of its lingering consequences for the Catholic church today.
Customer Reviews:
A Necessary Book.......2007-08-10
John Cornwell's book is eminently readable and well suits the non- academic in the pursuit of historical perspective. Eugenio Pacelli is characterised in the book as a man somewhat divorced from the pervading reality of his time. A man seeking to retain, and enforce, a rigid hierarchical view of the world at a time when the world in general was 'moving on'.
I would recommend John's book to anyone curious about the inner workings of the Vatican and seeking some understanding the church today.
Troubling evidence in Catholic Parish Churches in Germany.......2007-07-31
A debate of how much the Pope Pius XII did to stop Hitler will continue regarding the historical decisions and paperwork. But a troubling piece of evidence is the great number of memorials in German Catholic Churches regarding the parish members who were killed in the service of Hitler's military services. In some there were more than 50 dead Catholic men being memorialized. This does not include the many who were wounded or who escaped any injuries, but served for Nazi aims.
In the 200 to 300 AD period Catholic Christians stood up to oppressive acts of various governments. Many died while supporting the values and message of the Gospel. There was no similar Church-wide effort to fight for Gospel principles against the Hitler insanity. If there had been perhaps fewer Catholics would have been killed in this latter-day tragedy. I think it would have been better for those Catholic men to die as Christian martyrs rather than as tools of Hitler's regime.
Speaking out strongly against Hitler would have also given the Catholic Church a position of meaningfulness in present day Europe. Instead the Church is fighting a huge tide of secularization in western europe.
Cornwell's View.......2007-02-15
A relatively easy read. The chronology is rather loose and jumps around more than I cared for. Certain positive issues and programs sponsored by the Vatican are ignored. Also, some negative situations addressed seems to be a more grabbing at straws to shore the argument, not much meat to them. Other determining factors were well covered. It could have been a little more balanced in my opinion. Not my favorite read on the issue.
This book is Crap.......2007-01-18
This book is total crap.It proves one very hard and frightening maxim:those who do not understand history are doomed to repeat it.The world did not, would not act on the Nazi threat, and the second world war was the result of the world's cowardice. It is a cop out to place blame on the Pope Pius XII, or the Catholic Church. In fact, one of the main reasons the world, meaning, most of europe,England, the USA,did not act was the huge amounts of Nazi sympathizers in those countries. Now we are in a similar situation in the war on terror. What will be the result?
Ouch, a strike against objective historical facts..........2006-12-20
I hope Cornwell gets professional help for whatever motivated him to author this.
Rychlak's book "Hitler, the War, and the Pope" needs to be read if you choose to read this one.
Law professor historian Ron Rychlak(nonCatholic) has shown proof author Cornwell was biased and telling lies, starting from the front cover of "Hitler's Pope".
That cover picture story is interesting and demonstrative of Cornwell's penchant for manipulative tactics to get the result he wanted. The building in the cover photo is the office of both the Weimar government and later Hitler. Go to the UK Amazon site and notice that the cover photo for the same book is different than the cover on the American Amazon site. They both naturally were the same(they both were the UK cover) when the book was originally published, but the surprise phone call by Rychlak to an American radio show Cornwell was on, not only forced Cornwell to then alter the photo, but change the inset text that described the photo. But Cornwell still apparently couldn't help himself, he still was manipulative, so instead of eliminating the photo he carefully eliminated the parts of the photo and blurred the other parts that proved it was not a visit to Hitler, but to the Weimar government - Hitler's rivals before he took power. Wow, what a disturbed jerk. Cornwell was further forced to reprint the book in the US and change the text inside the book falsely claiming that the picture was taken after Hitler gained power.
Some of Cornwell's misrepresentations and falsifications were exposed after Rychlak published his analysis of Cornwell's facts, so I suggest reading what Rychlak has published on the web in addition to reading Rychlak's book.
Book Description
Perhaps no modern day leader of the Roman Catholic Church has sparked as much controversy as Pope Pius XII, the Bishop of Rome during World War II. Was he a Nazi sympathizer? Or did he vehemently oppose Hitler's regime? Professor Ron Rychlak gives a full exploration of the back-ground facts, including discussions of history, religion, politics, diplomacy and military tactics.

The whole truth.......2005-10-27
Rychlak gives the reader the whole truth regarding the role of the Roman Catholic Church during WWII. Much can be said about this book but I draw attention only to his excellent and successsful defense of Aloysius Cardinal Stepinac. Stepinac was the Archbishop of Zagreb, Croatia during WWII and did everything in his power to save Jews and others persecuted by the Nazis. He was later tried and convicted to 16 yrs prison by Tito's regime for alleged collaboration with the nazis, but in reality he was sentenced only because he refused to seperate the catholic Church in Croatia from the vatican to form a national croatian church. Rychlak brings cold hard facts to argue his case, something cornwall and others fail to do and instead rely on post WWII communist propaganda.
An impassioned but flawed defense .......2005-05-06
Like most of the Pius defenses, this book is at best when it sticks to its central modest thesis- that Pius was neither a vicious anti-semite nor a supporter of Hitler. Rychlak points to some modest pronouncements against the holocaust, the help given to Italian Jews, and the lack of evidence of anti-semitism to bolster this argument and largely succeeds. Going beyond that to "we did all we could" the book fails and ignores or fails to rebut some basic arguments.
1. This was a Lutheran Protestant/Catholic Holocaust. It could not have succeeded without the active (and sadly enthusiastic) participation of many Christians including Catholics. While a few helped the victims or spoke against Nazism, far, far, far more took part in identifying, imprisoning and murdering Jews.
The butcher, the baker, and candlestick maker became Gestapo policemen, prison guards, and informants.
2. The Pope speaks on matters of religion and his pronoucements should be obeyed. By and large German Catholics went to church, and did not divorce or engage in abortion. Why not tell them they should not imprison and kill Jews and to do so violates church doctrine. The few statements made by the Pope were general statements directed to the world, not to the faithful. What was needed was to tell German Catholics (and supporters in other countries) to stop persecuting and killing Jews and continuing the holocaust. Had the pope told the faithful to stop, the killing could clearly have been reduced. German and Polish Catholics were never told that their obedience to Nazi doctrine violated church teachings, and the concordants between the church and Fascist regimes would indicate the opposite.
3. The bible teaches that those who follow Christ's law may have a share in salvation. Many German Jews converted to Catholicism, their children went to Sunday school, and they attended church as dutiful Catholics and Protestants. Yet when Hitler came, he classified these converted Catholics as Jews: dirty, stinking, filthy Jews only interested in money who had betrayed the Fatherland. These former Jews were forced to wear Jewish starts and not associated with Christians Had religious leaders said that these converted Catholics were part of the church and should be protected, this would have put Catholic doctrine against the state. Instead, in a sad state, former Jews were readily identified in Germany and elsewhere, even to the extent of Gestap going into churches and identifying former Jews with the help of congregants.
4. One thesis is that the mild, quiet oppostion, not really maifesting itself until 1943, was the most effective. Could anyone really believe that. Imagine if in 1935, German stormroopers came into churches and beat up priests. Religious leaders with beards had them cut, religious items were desecrated, and nuns raped. Would Catholics say let's be quiet, don't offend anyone, hopefully this will not get out of hand. If church leaders were taken to concentration camps and killed and Catholics identified and beaten, would we likewise say, keep quiet.
5. The clear conclusion is that the decision was made to jettison the Jews, partly because no one cared, part because they feared the Nazis, and part because many liked the sense of national pride and economic recovery the Nazis had achieved. Few could honestly say that keeping a low profile was the course designed to best protect the Jews.
6. He fails to discuss why in countries with large Catholic populations, the scope of death was the greatest. Poland had a history of anti-semitism, and over one million Polish Jews were identified, largedly by cooperating Polish people, and those Jews, women, men, and children, were tortured, starved, and murdered at Auschwitz, with Catholic prison guards manning the concentration camp, and Catholic guards arranging the murders. To be fair it was not only Catholics, Eastern Orthodox guards, Lutheran guards, and Christians of all types, people who went to church on Sunday, celebrated Easter and Christmas, participated in the murders. They would celebrate communion on Sunday, and during the week helped apprehend, torture, and kill Jews. To call this a Catholic holocaust is inaccurate and incomplete. To call it a Christian holocaust in which Catholics played a vital role is sad but true.
7. One cannot escape the fact however that Catholics participated in the Holocaust and saw no contradiction between the murder of Jews and their religious faith. Catholic religious leaders had a duty to point out this contradiction.
8. To lay the entire burden upon Pope Pius is inaccurate. We should contrast the heroism of a minority who protected and sheltered Jewish victims, against the actions of the majority who took part in destroying the Jewish population of 10 countries, killing so many boys and girls, fathers and mothers, in the process.
What About Protestant America And Protestant Germany?.......2003-06-21
Ronald J. Rychlak's "Hitler, the War, and the Pope" is a fount of unimpeachable truth. It refutes completely the venomous accusations hurled at the Catholic Church in general, and Pope Pius XII in particular, concerning the Jews. Rychlak's book is sure to infuriate the anti-Catholic media, anti-Catholic "Christians", and all life forms that exist to attack the Church of Christ.
Indeed, unspoken yet real and critical questions are "What about Protestant America?", and "What about Protestant Germany?"
PROTESTANT AMERICA
How can anyone question what the militarily impotent Catholic Church did or did not to stop Hitler's extermination of the Jews, when militarily potent, Protestant America did NOTHING for so long? After all, the facts are unimpeachable, and quite sad:
1. Hitler invaded Poland in August 1939.
2. Two months later, in October 1939, Hitler started rounding up Jews in Poland and sending them to concentration camps.
3. Hitler then proceeded to invade Hungary and other countries, also rounding up the Jews there and sending them to concentration camps.
4. During 1939, 1940, and 1941, Hitler exterminated at least hundreds of thousands - if not millions - of Jews.
5. From October 1939 to December 1941, a span of 2 years and 2 months, during which Hitler was exterminating Jews, AMERICA DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
6. America in fact did not enter the war until December 1941.
7. And, America did NOT enter the war to save or help the Jews.
8. Rather, America entered the war solely because its naval fleet in the Pacific had been SUNK.
9. Thus, America entered the war for reasons having NOTHING to do with the extermination of the Jews that was (and for 2 years and 2 months had been) taking place in Europe.
Given these facts, how can anyone seriously question the actions of a militarily impotent Church without first - or at the same time - questioning the utter inaction of militarily potent America? As Stalin famously said, "How many divisions does the pope have?" None, of course. But, alas, that is irrelevant to the historically ignorant anti-Catholic.
PROTESTANT GERMANY
Likewise, how can anyone seriously question the actions of a Church based outside Germany, with only a minority of faithful in Germany, without first - or at the same time - questioning the actions of the majority Protestants in Germany? Once again, the facts are unimpeachable, and sad:
1. Germany was a PROTESTANT country.
2. Hitler was ELECTED by the German people.
3. In his electoral victory, Hitler received a MAJORITY of the German Protestant vote.
4. Yet, in his electoral victory, Hitler received only a MINORITY of the German Catholic vote.
5. Thus, Hitler came to power courtesy of German PROTESTANTS.
Given these facts, how can anyone seriously question the minority Catholic Church in Germany without first - or at the same time - questioning the majority Protestant churches in Germany? For instance, what did the German Protestant ministers, such as the Lutheran Bishops, know? And, when did they know it? And, what did they do, or not do, to stop the extermination of the Jews?
Clearly, all these "questions" being asked of the Catholic Church and Pius XII concerning the Jews should first be asked of Protestant America and Protestant Germany. This nonsense about the Catholic Church's alleged "silence" or "inaction" is more than just factually meritless. It is utterly hypocritical, and indeed hilariously so were it not so pathetic.
Rychlak Is Not A Catholic.......2003-01-07
Thoroughly researched, thoroughly reliable. Rychlak has extensive familiarity with primary sources and he sticks to the incontrovertible facts.
Please note, in reading some reviews published here, the animosity towards Christianity expressed by several people who obviously haven't read the book. This is a subject that should be approached with a cool head, an acknowledgement of the complexity of the situation, and a willingness to be truthful and fair; Rychlak has done just fine on all counts.
Hitler, the War, and the Pope.......2002-12-28
If you are looking for a well documented historical account of the situation between the Catholic Church and the Third Reich, you will find this book goes straight to the facts, names names, times, places, and events. This book completely shuns sensationalism, has impeccible research, and refutes inferior books such as 'Hitler's Pope' by John Cornwell.

Book Description
The shocking and incredible story behind Hitler's plan to occupy the Vatican and kidnap Pope Pius XII--and the surprising result of its failure.
In September, 1943, Adolf Hitler, furious at the ouster of Mussolini, sent German troops into Rome and ordered SS General Karl Wolff, who had been Heinrich Himmler's chief aide, to occupy the Vatican and kidnap (and, perhaps, kill) Pope Pius XII. At the same time plans were being made to deport Rome's Jews to Auschwitz, Wolff began playing a dangerous game: stalling Hitler's plot against the pope, whom he hoped would save him from the noose in case Germany lost the war. To save Pius, Wolff and fellow conspirators blackmailed him into silence when the Jews were rounded up, hoping that Hitler would rescind his order.
This tale of intrigue and betrayal is one of the most important untold stories of World War II. Dan Kurzman was the first journalist to have interviewed General Wolff following his release from prison after the war. And this is the only book to tell the full behind-the-scenes story of the plot against the Vatican and its far-reaching consequences.
Customer Reviews:
Well Done and Balanced View of Pius.......2007-09-07
Kurzman has done excellent work in this very well balanced history of Pope Pius and the Nazi threat in WWII. There are no excuses made or whitewash of what the Vatican did and did not do during the war but this book aids in having a better understanding of the situation, time, and place. It also offers some enlightenment into the thinking of the pope and the objectives of the Vatican. Very worthwhile to anyone interested in these issues and most certainly essential reading for anyone who has read "Hitler's Pope." It is clear from what Kurzman writes that Pius was not a supporter of Hitler and his policies. The complications, danger, and moral struggle of a basically good man of faith challenged by impossible circumstances in a world gone mad have never been presented in a better way.
Pope Pius vs Adolph Hitler.......2007-08-17
It was a most difficult time for the world in general, and for Pius XII in particular. Hitler's ambition threatened to conquer all of Europe and impose a rule of tyranny. The Pope, while he was Secretary of State and before his election to the papacy, was on record as opposing Hitler and his policies, and was hated by the Fuhrer. A Special Mission was ordered by Hitler to Seize the Pope and transport him to northern Italy, and at the same time to eliminate the high officials in the Vatican government. This mission was given to General Karl Wolff, the SS Commandant in Rome. Wolff perceived this action as a detriment to the Nazi cause, thinking that the tide of public opinion would be overwhelmingly against Germany, and even affect the morale and support of the German troops, a large percentage of whom were Catholic. He also came to believe that Germany would not win the war, and that his efforts to abort the kidnap mission could help Germany to obtain honorable terms for surrender, and even an accord with the Allies to oppose Soviet Russia. Accordingly, the General did everything he could to short-circuit the plan, including warning the Pope about the Special Mission, and asking him to refrain from speaking out against Hitler, to avoid capture and the destruction of the Vatican government.
Kurzman carefully records the many incidents that took place in this drama, many of them related to the exchanges between General Wolff and the Pope. There are many details that perhaps are not common knowledge, and from an historical perspective are quite interesting. While the intention of the author would seem to be vindication of Pius's role during World War II, the subtle questions he poses seem to me to be barbs inflicted for dereliction of duty - cheap shots. All in all, it is an interesting account of the battle between the Vatican and the Third Reich and is worthwhile reading.
A Breath of Fresh Air.......2007-07-15
Kurman's work, the research for which was done over the course of almost 30 years, does a great job of showing that Pope Pius XII is not the evil figure portrayed by so many wannabe historians. This book is well-written, thoughtful and touching. If you are a student of history, this is well worth your time.
About Time.......2007-06-02
It's about time that somebody jumped off the bandwagon that blindly shouts that Pius XII didn't do enough about the holocaust, and actually took a look at historical evidence to see if such accusations are warranted. What's been said about Pius XII is a real assasination of character. Bravo for standing up for historical truth for once.
