    Book Description

As the culture wars continue to dominate newspaper headlines and conference panels, much of the debate revolves around the value of and values in popular culture. Many opponents of popular culture have cited Theodor W. Adorno, one of the leading figures of the Frankfurt School of critical theorists. Adorno is understood to have viewed mass culture as completely commodified--that is, produced only to be sold on the market and without aesthetic value. In this compelling book, Deborah Cook critically examines this view and argues persuasively that even Adorno's "pessimistic" theory leaves room for resistance to the culture industry. Beginning with an exploration of the theoretical background for Adorno's work, Cook then examines Adorno's conception and criticism of mass culture and its consumption, and his views about art and its relation to mass culture. The first book-length treatment in English of Adorno's work on popular culture, "The Culture Industry Revisited" provides new readers of Adorno with an understanding of his theory and an overview of his more important critics. Those more familiar with Adorno will find important discussion of some of the more controversial ideas in his work. The book will be of interest to scholars and upper-level students of philosophy, sociology, literature, communications, and cultural studies.

      Book Description

Women in television news have made great strides in the past twenty-five years. No longer limited to being the token pretty face on the nightly newscast, women have taken their places as working journalists in newsrooms, on the campaign trail, in war zones, and in the highest echelons of network news management. Barbara Walters and Connie Chung have even occupied the coveted network anchor's chair, if only briefly.

In this book, 70 of the foremost women in television news reflect on their professional successes, the personal and professional sacrifices that often bought those successes, and the barriers that still confront women in the news business. Weaving their interviews into a compelling text, Judith Marlane covers a wide range of issues, including looks versus ability and experience, sexual harassment, the resistance to women news anchors, the difficulties of balancing work and family life, women's and men's salaries, and the willingness of women to help other women in the business.

This book builds from Marlane's 1976 work, Women in Television News. Interviews with many of the same women highlight the gains that women have made in broadcast journalism. Simultaneously, Marlane has expanded her range of informants to include fifteen of America's most famous male anchors and correspondents to gather their assessments of the role of women in broadcasting today.

      Book Description

In Claiming the Real, Brian Winston rewrites the history of documentary film to take account of technological change. He subjects the great figures of the past--Grierson, Flaherty, Dziga-Vertov--to a searching critique, and examines both the principles and practice of the major movements in documentary such as cinema verité. He offers a revised definition of the essential difference between fiction and documentary, and identifies the ethical base of any film practice that attempts to capture "truth."

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Clear and Wide Ranging intro to documentary.......2005-06-16

This is a clearly written, historically grounded and wide ranging introduction to documentary. The field of academic study of documentary is not well established and there are only a few notable books in the field - this is one of them! Winston attempts to categorise differnt forms of documentary from the Griersonian to "fly-on-the-wall". His categorisations are by no means universally valid, but they do enable the reader to better comprehend the claims of documentaries. In his final chapters Winston makes his own claim on how documentarians should position themselves. Whilst parts of the book do seem a little messey, this is more to do with the messy state of documentary than with Winston's writing.

      Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Marred by incredibly sloppy research.......1998-05-02

I was shocked to find that this book, bearing the imprimatur of the BFI, was so poorly researched and so sloppily assembled. One example -- a film that merits an entire chapter is not even mentioned in the index! Winston has done some good work in the past, and has some interesting ideas, but should be ashamed of having this mess released with his name on it.

From the supplier: Communication technology is one of the greatest factors affecting human communication. Humans learn how to communicate via three phases of communication: nonverbal, oral and written communication. The increase in the capacity to store, transmit and retrieve information marked the advances of civilization. The sanctity of writing before the advent of information technology continues to fade as new communication technologies are developed. Nevertheless, the importance of written communication in human evolution remains even in the age of information technology.

From the supplier: The 'sales culture' concept has become the latest buzzword in bank management circles. The concept refers to the development of an environment that focuses upon the sale of bank services and products, with most employees expected to dedicate their time principally to selling of fee-generating investment products and services. In such an environment, employees are evaluated in terms of their sales performance and provided with bonuses if they meet sales targets. Not surprisingly, many banking publications are devoting much space to discussions of this 'sales culture' concept, given its growing appeal in a time characterized by market share battles among banking groups. Recent reports compiled by the Bank Marketing Assn's Information Center include reports on this subject culled from the 'Tennessee Banker,' the 'Profitable Banker,' and the 'Bank Personnel Report.'

4 out of 5 stars Very Theoretical but good fundamental and advanced techniques.......2007-01-31

The techniques described are very theoretical but are friendly to be used in Computer programs. Has a great deal of depth.

2 out of 5 stars This book is only useful if you already know about linear programming........2005-10-15

I am using this book for a linear programming course. The most flagrant problem with this book is that it is filled with typos, making reading through proofs and examples very frustrating because you're never sure what is supposed to be written. The book is also not very good at explaining concepts and leaves many steps out in the development of new ideas. If you can avoid it, do not use this book to learn linear programming.

3 out of 5 stars It Could be better.......2005-06-10

In my point of view this book has 2 related problems:

Problem 1. It tries to pack much information in a small space.

Problem 2. I dont like the author's style of asking why? and how? to the reader in the midst of the text. Maybe this is to keep the book small but it forces you to stop reading and think about the question.

However, I think this book is a good reference. But, certainly the authors could have made it better. Let's wait for the next edition.

4 out of 5 stars Strong Graduate Treatment in Linear Programming.......2004-02-05

I used this text while taking a graduate linear programming (LP)course on LP and network flows. I really liked the treatment. The typesetting was clear ,consistent and easily followed (not as good as Nash and Sofer's). The book also includes lots of nice side discussion on how or why the theory is the way it is. Plenty of references are offered for further study. Proofs were not rigorous. The highly mathematical reader may be disappointed by the "show proof" style used instead of a rigorous theorem-proof style. In fact, I seem to recall a time or two where the theorem came after the usage. For me, I didn't mind that, but a pure math guy would likely grind his teeth.

The network material was acceptable. I personally thought the text problems were not of the best quality. I would suggest a teacher supplement their own favorites outside of the book.

One caution is that the book is somewhat aged. I noticed a text like Nash and Sofer seems to have newer updates on the theory.

Overall, a great read for getting into the nitty gritty details of LP.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent but DENSE!!!!.......2003-12-12

I am currently working toward a Ph.D. in Management Science and used this book for a LP course. If you can get past the matrix algebra (which isn't too terribly difficult) you will find that this book contains more practical LP information than any other resource available. However, those looking for a "how to" book on linear programming might want to try a more elementary text first. This book is geared toward those interested in the more advanced computational aspects of LP (e.g., revised simplex method, LU decomposition, product form of the inverse, bounded variables, etc.). The chapter on sensitivity analysis is particularly well written and thorough. But beware, this book packs more info per page than I have ever seen!!!

                    Book Description

Network flow optimization analyzes optimization problems on networks; hence, network optimization is reflected in many application fields including transportation, telecommunication, computer networking, financial planning, logistics and supply chain management, energy systems, etc. However, to date, most network optimization problems that have been studied are static network optimization problems. But "real world networks" are time-varying in essence, and therefore any flow within a network must take a certain amount of time to traverse an arc. Moreover, the parameters of "real world networks" may change over time. Problems such as how to plan and control the transmission of flow becomes very important, because waiting at a node, or traveling along a particular arc with different speed, may allow one to catch the best timing along the path; thus, achieving the objective and changing the decision making process. It should be noted that there are a host of decision making problems in practice that should be formulated as optimization models on time-varying networks.

The express purpose of TIME-VARYING NETWORK OPTIMIZATION is to describe, in a unified and self-contained manner, a series of models, propositions, and algorithms developed in recent years on time-varying networks. References and discussions on relevant problems and studies that have appeared in the literature are integrated in the book. The book consists of eight chapters, in which the following problems are formulated and examined: (1) the shortest path problem, (2) minimum-spanning tree problem, (3) maximum flow problem, (4) minimum cost flow problem, (5) maximum capacity path problem, (6) quickest path problem, (7) multi-criteria problem, and (8) the generalized flow problem. The time-varying traveling salesman problem and the Chinese postman problem are presented in a chapter together with the time-varying generalized problem. While these topics will be described all within the framework of time-varying networks, our plan is to make each chapter relatively self-contained so that each can be read separately.

The book will be useful for researchers, practitioners, graduate students and senior undergraduates, as a unified reference and textbook on time-varying network optimization. While the book describes the structure of the algorithms, the authors also have developed the software that implements the algorithms. This software can be made available for academic study purposes upon request.

                        Description:
Each year, the US Air Force Academy graduates nearly 1000 young men and women. To support the decision of which cadets will be classified into which career fields, we describe a linear programming formulation with appealing computational properties that enable it as the core of a decision support tool. We explore methods for measuring and balancing cadets' class standing, Air Force career field requirements, and cadets' career field preferences in the context of this model. Our computational experiments demonstrate the improvement of this method over previous classification approaches, yielding more than 10% increase in the number of cadets assigned to their top career field choice and yielding nearly a 100% reduction in the number of cadets not receiving any of their career field choices. We also explore alternative methods for measuring cadets' career field preferences and demonstrate the positive effect of the new measurement scheme on the overall classification. Because of the short running time of this model, it will serve as a flexible, real-time component of the Academy's classification process.

                          Description:
In this paper we consider the practical implementation of the disaggregated simplicial decomposition (DSD) algorithm for the traffic assignment problem. It is a column generation method that at each step has to solve a huge number of quadratic knapsack problems (QKP). We propose a Newton-like method to solve the QKP when the quadratic functional is convex but not necessarily strictly. Our O(n) algorithm does not improve the complexity of the current methods but extends them to a more general case and is better suited for reoptimization and so a good option for the DSD algorithm. It also allows the solution of many QKP's simultaneously in a vectorial or parallel way.
