An Interesting Account of the Events Leading Up To 9/11.......2007-09-09
The purpose of the 9-11 report is to "investigate the 'facts and circumstances relating to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001'." In pursuing this objective, the 9-11 Commission sought to be "independent, impartial, thorough, and nonpartisan." The Commission states that its
purpose is not to assign individual blame, and indeed, it doesn't. It is a unique piece of literature, historical yet not far enough removed from the actual events to really call it history in the traditional sense. It's not written for entertainment, yet it is fascinating nonetheless: the report almost reads like a spy novel as it traces the movement of the 9-11 conspirators, where they traveled, how they slipped in and out of the country, and how close some of them got to being captured. It gives you insights on how our government does, and doesn't, work, and describes how the numerous government agencies interact and, more often than not, fail to interact. It seeks to find the reasons why the attack succeeded, blaming everyone and no one, it seems, in the process. The 9-11 report leaves no doubt that it was written by a bi-partisan commission that refuses to lay the blame on individuals but instead lays it on institutions and processes.
The first chapter describes what happened in the air that morning, and from there, the report discusses the rise of Bin-Laden and Al Qaeda, the rise of counterterrorism activities in the US (touching on several departments, including the CIA and FBI), and on to how the 9-11 commission believes the attacks were planned and carried out. It then covers the actual events of September 11, 2001, describing in some detail how the first-responders handled this crisis and some of the shortcomings they had to deal with. Finally, the book addresses the ensuing war in Afghanistan (briefly) and makes recommendations on global strategy and reorganization within the US Government, esp. in the intelligence community. Throughout the report, the commission shoots down a number of rumors that were popular during the writing of the book, such as members of the Saudi family leaving the country while all flights were grounded, and one of the terrorists (Mohamed Atta) meeting with an Iraqi diplomat in Prague.
What I found particularly disturbing in this book was how easy the 9-11 terrorists entered and exited the country, and how easy it was for them to find people to assist them in finding a place to live, worship, etc.. I was also amazed at how easily money flowed from Al Qaeda to the 9-11 conspirators, and even more amazed at how easily they could have been caught yet weren't.
One of the biggest assets within the 9-11 report is also its biggest drawback: the book has hundreds of footnotes, and while most of these simply identify a source (say, a book or a person interviewed), many provide additional information about the topic discussed in the text. Many of these latter types of footnotes, I felt, needed to be in the body of
the main text and not hidden in the back of the book.
Recommendation: Highly recommended if you have any interest at all in knowing what happened before, during, and after September 11, 2001.

As it is non fiction catagory it would be hard to comment though after reading the report I now would reclassify it as fictional account on how kerosene can weaken 200,000 tons of construction steel to the point that the buildings collapsed! Also totally missing is any explanation why WTC7 came down.
Or any explanation where are the engines in the Pentagon attack?

Unfortunately, I am not sure how else to describe the report other than... well... garbage. I hate to say it but there are too many holes and it does not hold up to scrutiny.
Although it had a good story to tell and made popular by the government and media, it is just that- a story that does not hold up to the facts. I was hoping that it would provide more insight into the events on 9/11 but it left me asking all kinds of questions especially about WTC7, evidence of thermite, omitted testimony of eyewitnesses, and the testimony discrepancies between Cheney and Mieta.
I am deeply disappointed that I wasted my money on this. I gave it 2 stars because it did a least grab my attention and provided some good references in the back.

You don't need a degree in Engineering to work out what will happen:
From the first chapter reading the accounts of what happened to each individual flight and seeing the total confusion between ATC, the FAA, NORAD etc is frightening. They didn't know what to do, they didn't know what was happening. With transponders turned off, it was impossible to track those aircraft accurately. Personally I've flown enough jumpseat trips that it still fills me with dread to think what was happening up front.
Later chapters on Bin-Laden and the rise of Al-Qaeda and Muslim extremism (mainly due to their corrupt self-serving leaders) are well presented.
Richard A. Clark's efforts to thwart Al-Qaeada are also explained.
Buy the book, it's a good read. Though I still can't believe they didn't put an Index in it.
Sadly, to digress a little, the unjustified invasion of Iraq subsequently has been a complete disaster. Saddam ran a secular society - you could drink alcohol and socialise with women. He was the Arab Caligula, only interested in himself and his personal empire. But Saddam had nothing to do with the 9-11 attacks. Nothing. So much goodwill towards the US has been lost due to Iraq and the Neo-Con (not my Taiwanese friend .-)) led invasion.
As for the Conspiracy theorists on this page, to be honest I'm quite shocked when I found this review page. I've honestly never read so many self-serving attempts to cling to straws in my life, like this "Loose-Change" stuff. It's an insult to those who died that day. And I'm not American!

The seeds of 9-11 were sown years ago. Yes, of course there are inaccuracies (there always are in disaster reporting) but there is no conspiracy.
I know no conspiracy theorists in Air Traffic Control or the airline business. Get real - it happened.
And sadly many of us in Europe thought "no surprise it was US Domestic flights, US Airport security is a total farce".

Omits everything factual. Doesn't bother to mention, much less explain, what happened to the 47 box columns of steel from which the twin towers were constructed. Also no mention of building 7 falling on it's footprint at freefall speed, even though no airplane hit building 7.
The purpose of this report is to reinforce the blatant official fantasy, for the purpose of justifying problem / reaction / solution, and getting you to cave in and accept greater government control over you.
There was no effort made to check any facts. If you're seeking the truth about what happened on 9/11 you won't find it in this book. Instead you'll find lots of reasons to seek facts and you'll find the facts at [...]. You may also want to check out David Ray Griffin's books or Steven E. Jones.

It's A Tragedy That's Still Almost Impossible To Comprehend .... This Book's First Chapter Is As Scary As Anything Ever Written.......2006-09-11
To answer the questions surrounding the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and to create suggestions on how to avoid such an immense tragedy in the future, the U.S. Congress and President George W. Bush created the "National Commission On Terrorist Attacks Upon The United States" (Public Law 107-306) on November 27, 2002.
Gut-wrenching in its detail, "The 9/11 Commission Report" provides up-close and gripping insight into what happened before, during, and after the worst terrorist attacks on United States soil on Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001.
But, implacably, many people feel the need to cry "Conspiracy" and "Cover-Up" whenever an "Official U.S. Government Commission" is assembled to investigate something; and pretty much anything too; it doesn't seem to matter; "Conspiracy" MUST be believed by some individuals, no matter what.
President John F. Kennedy's murder being another prime example of a tragic event in U.S. history which has been dissected to a pulp and has had conspiracy theorists leaping to many illogical conclusions regarding how the President died that awful day in Dallas, Texas.
President Kennedy's assassination, however, was a crime, given the physical evidence, that was obviously committed by just a single man named Lee Harvey Oswald. The Warren Commission, overall, did a good job arriving at the truth in that 1963 case involving the death of JFK. But conspiracy theorists obviously feel otherwise, and have chosen to attempt to trash the work of Earl Warren's commission practically from Day 1 of its completion.
The "CTers", however, have failed to prove their case against the Warren Commission. In fact, they have failed miserably in that effort, IMO -- mainly because conspiracy theorists generally fail to examine things while using the common sense and logic that God (supposedly) supplied them with.
And, right on cue, a Government cover-up is thought to exist by many people with respect to the 9/11 investigation as well. In my opinion, it seems as if some individuals NEED to believe in Government complicity (regardless of the total lack of hard evidence to back up such silly notions).
But when it comes down to answering the key common-sense "conspiracy" questions, such as: "Why Would The U.S. Government Do This?", or (with respect to the JFK assassination in particular): "How Could The U.S. Government Possibly Have Pulled Off This Massive Cover-Up So Perfectly?" -- the answers that inevitably follow are patently weak and riddled with holes in the logic department.
There are two chapters in this 9/11 Commission Report that, in my opinion, are particularly noteworthy -- the chapters designated "We Have Some Planes" (Chapter 1) and "The Attack Looms" (Chapter 7). That first chapter (46 pages in length) has the ability to make you shake while reading it. Every detail of the four hijacked commercial airliner flights is packed into this chapter, right down to the minute many of the 19 hijackers passed through the security areas of Boston's Logan and Washington's Dulles airports. Plus there's the practically minute-by-minute account of the doomed plight of the four jetliners as the hijackings unfold.
A segment in the book within Chapter One (called "The Battle For United 93") is possibly the most excruciating-to-read portion of this volume, as the passengers of the hijacked Boeing 757 try unsuccessfully to regain control of the airplane from the terrorists. One short passage is especially chilling: "The passengers continued their assault and at 10:02:23, a hijacker said 'Pull it down! Pull it down!' " --- At that point, the jet rolled onto its back and then plowed into an empty Pennsylvania field at 580 MPH.
"The Attack Looms" chapter traces the pre-9/11 movements of many of the hijackers. In hindsight, it's rather frightening to think that you or I might have very well been sitting right next to one of these murdering terrorists on a commercial airline flight across the country during the weeks and months leading up to 9/11.
The book talks about the "surveillance flights" that the 9/11 terrorist pilots boarded prior to the attacks, which were (in essence) "trial runs" for September 11th, with each of the soon-to-be terrorist pilots travelling on the same type of aircraft (Boeing 757s and Boeing 767s) that, weeks later, would be used as flying bombs to kill thousands.
This book also provides photographs of all 19 of the September 11 hijackers, which personalizes the tragedy a bit more, as we're able to look into the eyes of these crazy suicidal madmen. And the fact that NINETEEN different human beings (if we can even call these crazy kooks "human"), who were a part of the concentrated and incredibly-well-mapped-out effort to hijack four airplanes and use them as weapons of death and destruction, were all willing to kill themselves to serve their terrorist leader(s) is, in my considered opinion, one of the most chilling and frightening aspects about the events of 9/11.
For, how does the head of a terrorist organization go about the amazing task of getting 19 people (20 when the one hijacker who didn't make it onto United Flight 93 is included) to voluntarily commit suicide by deliberately flying large fuel-laden jetliners into multiple buildings all on the same day? That fact alone is mind-bogglingly scary.
Of course, I suppose it helps if you've got a lot of crazy, U.S.-hating madmen to choose from -- and evidently whatever organization was responsible for engineering the 9/11 attacks had just that, a roster of American-loathing scumbags who didn't care if they themselves died a violent and unnatural death, just as long as many, many Americans went with them. And their sickening goal was unfortunately realized, as the terrorists took nearly 3,000 innocent people with them on September 11th.
Some portions of the "9/11 Commission Report" (focusing on the post-September 11 aspects of the attacks) are indeed a bit tedious to wade through. And having to read the virtually impossible-to-pronounce names of the lowlife killers over and over again (names like "Ahmad al Haznawi" and "Abdulaziz al Omari" and "Satam al Suqami") puts a bit of a strain on the eyeballs after awhile, with some pages resembling an eyechart rather than coherent sentences. Quite obviously, though, this couldn't be helped -- the hijackers' names were what they were. But this book is worth its list price for the first captivating chapter all by itself.
Returning to the subject of conspiracy theories for a little while longer:
On the 5th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, the Cable News Network re-broadcast a large portion of its "as-it-happened" 9/11 news coverage (which was made available on the CNN website). And while watching some of that engrossing CNN "Live" footage, it struck me how utterly silly some of the 9/11 conspiracy theories are -- particularly the unbelievably-stupid nonsense about a missile hitting the Pentagon (instead of the Boeing 757 that any reasoned-thinking person knows was really the object that struck that building and killed those people on board American Flight #77).
For, if it had really been a missile instead of a jet plane that hit the Pentagon, then the conspiracy theorists need to explain away all the eyewitnesses who physically saw an American Airlines commercial plane slam into the Pentagon building.
Do the conspiracy kooks actually think that those ordinary citizens who were interviewed by CNN and other news agencies within hours of the event were all lying (or simply mistaken) when they said they saw a WINGED JETLINER hit the Pentagon?
As alluded to previously, just like the many aspects of the John F. Kennedy assassination that CTers turn into "conspiracy" even though there's no hard evidence for such beliefs whatsoever -- it seems that conspiracy believers have gone to similar off-the-wall extremes when it comes to the U.S. Government-involved "9/11 conspiracy" that was never there.
I'd advise any conspiracy buff to watch the real-time news coverage of 9/11 as it unfolded, and listen to the people on the streets who told of what they saw that day on live television. That simple exercise will easily knock down a whole bunch of the nutty conspiracy notions regarding 9/11, similar to the way that a goodly number of JFK conspiracy theories can be beaten back into the woods (where they belong) upon re-watching the as-it-is-happening news coverage of the day President Kennedy was killed in Dallas.
The "Live Breaking News" broadcasts of those two days (9/11/01 and 11/22/63) can do wonders for debunking much of the kooky and unsupportable conspiracy talk that has sprung up in wake of the tragic events that transpired on those two days in U.S. history.
Conspiracy theorists have certain patterns that they seem to religiously adhere to. One of those is to make sure they completely misinterpret and manipulate the photographic record to suit their conspiratorial requirements. This tactic has been employed by CTers in both the JFK case and in the 9/11 instance as well (it is used a great deal in the JFK case, which was without doubt the most-photographed murder in the history of the world). CTers will almost always see things in pictures that were never there, and misinterpret gobs of other stuff within certain photos as well.
And CTers rarely want to use any common sense when trying to stitch together their piecemeal, always-disconnected "plots". This is definitely the case with respect to the JFK assassination, and it seems to be the case with all the stupid and insane 9/11 theories that point an accusing finger of complicity at the United States Government which have surfaced since 2001 too.
For example, in the 9/11 case, if a missile really hit the Pentagon, then where the heck did the Boeing 757 disappear to after taking off from Dulles Airport at 8:20 AM on 9/11/01? It certainly didn't reach its destination of Los Angeles; and none of the plane's passengers have ever been seen again. Do CTers think that that plane and all of those people inside it have been hiding out at Area 51 in the desert someplace since 9/11?
And to equate the above 9/11 nonsense with the JFK case -- instead of the "Missing Passengers" that CTers must deal with re. 9/11, it's the "Missing Bullets" they must reconcile with respect to the Kennedy murder investigation.
Why? Because there are simply no bullets connected with JFK's murder that could lead a CTer down the proverbial "It Was Definitely A Conspiracy" path. None. All bullets and fragments can either be positively linked to the gun owned by the man who was charged with killing JFK in 1963 (Lee Harvey Oswald), or are bullet fragments that are generally consistent with having come from Oswald's rifle. And that type of ballistics evidence does NOT equal a "Multi-Gun Conspiracy". It just doesn't. And never did.
The above example just serves to illustrate the mindset of a rabid conspiracist who is perfectly content to toss common sense and logical thinking out the nearest window.

The 9/11 Commission Report guides the reader through the pre- and post-September 11th events in a stoic manner, void of any personal emotion or attachment. But the book doesn't really need to provide these things. Nor was it the Commission's job to do so. The reader can easily supply those feelings for himself while reading these pages.
