Book Description

Haskins' seminal sixties classics, which include the groundbreaking Cowboy Kate, are landmarks in the history of photography, as revered today as they were when first published forty years ago. In Cowboy Kate, a lyrical tale of the triumph of youth played out by cowgirls of the old west, Haskins reinvented the genre of the nude with stunningly well-executed photographs, a cinematic approach, and a subtly engaging narrative. Often copied but rarely equaled, Haskins has an exceptional ability to photograph women with a sensitivity that has won him accolades from men and women alike. The "Director's Cut" is revised to include new and previously unpublished photographs.

4 out of 5 stars Black & white, film grain, and boobies........2007-09-24

Years ago, I caught an article about Sam Haskins in Photo magazine. It talked much about the man and his work, and since reading that article I was dead set on finding a copy of "Cowboy Kate" Unfortunately, the book was out of print and the cost of obtaining a copy was substantially high for my budget. So there it remained on my wish list for years. Fortunately, I occasionally checked amazon to see if maybe the price would go down. And it did, and I bought.

This book is filled with vintage erotic photography. By vintage I mean the 60's and by erotic, I don't really mean erotic at all. The images are all black and white, usually very high contrast and grain... a style that I have always loved. The images will undoubtedly come off as alluring and sexual because of the beautiful women and nudity. It comes off very sexual at times, but I believe that it was done in such a way that it can't even really be deemed "erotic" Haskins approached the subjects in such a noble way, it dodges the overly graphic, and often blatantly pornographic erotic books that many of us are used to seeing in the art books section. They are simply beautiful images that deserve long, appreciative looks. The photographs for me are absolutely timeless. Many can probably conclude the general time period in which they were photographed, but it still remains (to me) as fresh as anything that might have been photographed yesterday without the addition of the sex drive requirements that seem to be the standard these days.

There are a few different bodies of work included in this book. My favorite is probably Cowboy Kate (cover image) but the other images also show for themselves. In a way, the bodies of work speak as a narrative... not so much frame to frame, but it tells a story as a whole. The girls are obviously comfortable in front of the camera, often playful and extroverted. Everything feels very natural and nothing seems forced. It doesn't feel like a photo shoot captured and laid out in a book for consumers.

Unfortunately a few of my favorite Haskins photographs are not included in this book, but there are many others that make up for it. A great book to own. Get it before it goes out of print (again).

5 out of 5 stars An all Time Masterpiece.......2007-09-08

I'll never forget being knocked off my feet in the sixties by the freshness, frankness, imagination, lack of inhibition and striking beauty of Cowboy Kate. I still take it as a homage to our loveliest fantasies of women. It was an absolute breath of fresh air in comparison to 'artistic' i.e. expressionless and uninvolved women and stereotyped and jaded 'pinups.' What amazes me is that no one has yet done it any better. Haskin's women are both the girl next door and goddesses of unmatched grace, yet approachable. If you're a photographer, like me, Cowboy Kate is a source of fun, beauty and inspiration. If you're not, unrivaled fun and beauty isn't such a bad deal.

4 out of 5 stars This book is extremely erotic!.......2007-01-20

The book was very well put together. However, I am not familiar with the original, so I cannot proclaim any differences. I bought this book because I am a fan of photography and thought it would be artistically fun and sexy, and it is! It's a lot more blatently erotic than I expected. Something I didn't expect to discover from this book is that I don't really like the twiggy beauty from the 60s. But for those who do, this book is what you're looking for. There are some great artistic efforts with lighting and composition. Very impressive black and whites.

5 out of 5 stars Killer Cowboy Kate, Beauty and Art have never been so mutually exclusive........2006-10-21

Buy this book now, It's going to be devoured by those in the know and it will cost you a fortune! Ethereal and magical are one way to describe Sam Haskins photos, also sexy and fabulous are good adjectives. It would be hard to choose. I ordered this book knowing that it was, and is, a classic, but had no idea of the impact these photos would have. You can tell by the cover that you are in for an emotionally charged ride that you will never forget. There is a slim narrative running throughout these photos, but you as the viewer are allowed to create your own story , and what a story it is. Kate and her cohorts are iconic babes that transcend the 60's. The girl's sheer beauty and playfulness will make you gasp, and even chuckle at their bodaciousness. I won't give away any secrets, but the photo's are remastered and gloriously beautiful. You..must...order...now!

Book Description

Who hasn't fantasized about leaving behind the chaos of everyday life and moving someplace where life is simpler? Well, that's just what chef and food writer Paula Disbrowe did when she left New York City and moved to Texas. She traded her subway MetroCard for a pickup truck and her stiletto heels for a pair of down-home cowboy boots.

In Cowgirl Cuisine, Paula tells her story through food. She weaves together romance, adventure, and more than a few laughs as she celebrates the beauty of flavorful food, fresh air, and her own wholesome recipes, all while taking home cooks on a journey well off the beaten path.

Like Texas itself, the recipes in Cowgirl Cuisine are big-hearted and bold—whole-grain muffins bursting with berries, salads loaded with leafy herbs and avocado, and fiery bowls of chili. Paula's food is healthful and full of nutrients, but this is not a diet cookbook—cowgirls don't have time to count calories (besides, they burn it all off hoisting newborn calves, hiking the hills, and galloping off on long trail rides). Instead, this is food that is satisfying and easy to prepare, which leaves plenty of time for living life to the fullest.

From hearty ranch breakfasts to fresh salads, spicy nibbles, seductive desserts, and killer watermelon margaritas, Paula's recipes are full of her signature zest, spunk, and spice. Start your day off right with Canyon Granola or Cowgirl Migas. For lunch, have a nourishing bowl of silky Roasted Pumpkin Soup with Red Chile Cream or Chicken and Citrus Slaw Tostadas. For dinner, try Gazpacho Risotto with Garlic Shrimp or Cowboy Pot Roast with Coffee and Whiskey. And be sure to save room for one of Paula's decadent desserts, such as Chocolate Pecan Squares or Dulce de Leche Flan with Pepita Brittle.

In addition to her recipes, Paula includes humorous and heartfelt vignettes about wild animals on the loose, scorpions in the sheets, and Casanova cowboys. And the pages are filled with lush photographs of food and life on the range. Cowgirl Cuisine isn't just spurs and salsa—it's about following your dream. So saddle up and follow yours.

5 out of 5 stars Cowgirl Cuisine.......2007-05-24

Now this is a cookbook!!!! You feel like you really know this gal. I haven't any other cookbook like it in my collection. Very down to earth and shows her quirky sense of humor. Recipes are delicious and something different than the "meat and potatoes" usual in my kitchen. I have already ordered several to give as gifts.

3 out of 5 stars It didn't excite me..........2007-05-21

I picked up this book after a review in Rachel Ray's magazine. To be honest, this book didn't thrill me. The recipes contained many hard to find ingredients and seemed a bit frou frou to me.

I enjoyed some of the pictures, but found the pictures of people to be a little much. When I read cookbooks I'd rather have pictures of food. I did think the dog photo was cute, 'tho.

I found this book to be merely ok. I was surprised I didn't like it more.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book! .......2007-05-12

I love the authentic, real-life stories, and the recipes are a super collection of easy to more detailed ingredients and steps.

Yes, this lady knows Texas and its love of food.

5 out of 5 stars urban cowgirl.......2007-05-12

I am a native New Yorker who has been a Texas resident for 16 years. My new daughter-in-law is a native Texan who has inherited a working ranch. This book was a perfect gift for her. The recipes are awesome, the pictures are fantastic and the personal stories were great. I loved it because the book and the author were cosmopolitan, contemporary, earthy and promoted being sustainale. Boots, belt buckles, denim, diamonds, high heels and great food - a combination that works for me!

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and SEXY..........2007-05-08

I just love this cookbook! The recipes are simple and straight forward...any home cook can make them with little effort and the results are sure to get raves. I've already made the Canyon Granola and it's super. The fun stories personalize Paula's true love for the Texas Hill Country and the sexy photographs made even my husband page through the book with interest! Great job. I plan to give copies to all my Texas Hill Country friends.

4 out of 5 stars Cowgirls' inspiring lives.......2007-05-03

Using the lives of western women who made a difference in their own lives and that of others, the author provides brief biographical sketches and relates those lives to her typology of self improvement. It's an interesting approach and serves well to exemplify how ordinary folks provide the substance of history.

5 out of 5 stars THE BOOK for every woman!!!.......2007-01-05

Every woman, whether a teenager, whether in her twenties and thirties, or even in her sixties, should read this book. Based on the TRUE lives of women who lived in the West, or Cowgirls, this small volume provides an enormous amount of insight into life in general and to growing and living as a woman. Very inspirational.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

This is more of Robbins' whacky silliness, with a woman touring all over the place to find someone compatible and display her jeans to best advantage.

She ends up encountering other odd characters in her quest to find out where she fits in, and what this shagging thing is all about.

2 out of 5 stars on and on and on and on.......2006-09-10

I got this book because it was highly recommended by a college professor. I thought that it was entirely too wordy. I would skip through paragraphs because it was just too much. I thought the story plot was interesting and could have been fun to read, but Tom Robbins came off sounding pretentious because of his overuse of words. It could have been much better.

2 out of 5 stars Form over Function.......2006-05-16

The language is beautiful in form. Inspirational is the best way to describe his ability to describe any one moment. The internal mechanisms that move a story from one moment to the next is what was painfully absent. The main driving force of plot was overt sexual tension. Once this aspect had reached its climax early in the novel there was little holding my attention. I put the book down not knowing what became of the Chink or any of the Cowgirls.
Is literature supposed to have a point or not? There are works of art that are beauty in of themselves, and only for themselves, and represent a voice that was never heard of before. Then there are pieces of art and literature whose point is to edify through illustration, explanation or even catharis. This work was absent of any meaningful satire that I could discern. Robbin's strength here was in his unique way of illustrating with words.
I believe an earlier reviewer used the words "literary masturbation." Perfect discription.
Sadly, this was my first exposure to T. Robbins. Doubt if I will try again any time soon. I do get Cinemax afterall.

5 out of 5 stars two freakishly large thumbs up.......2006-04-18

A young lady with fantastically large thumbs. An all female ranch. Roundabout routes to self-descovery, hitchiking and whooping cranes. The troublesome part about reading "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" is twofold. The first is that you cannot put it down. The second is, having subjected yourself to such a large dose of Robbins trippy, meandering style, you begin to think like him. Worse, you begin to talk the way he writes. One moment, you're having a perfectly lucid conversation with the boss about deadlines, the next, you're babbling incongruously about the average rectal temperature of the hummingbird.
The novel moves along with the crazy, fast-and-slow pace of an acid trip. As a reader, you bounce and groove along with the story as though you were clinging to the side of a raft in rough seas.
Robbins has mastery over his readers, and "Cowgirls" is the book that welcomed me into his twisted world. The uniqueness of his writing style is apparent from page one. You might advance to page three just out of some perverse curiosity about this strange, gushing style. After that Robbins owns you. Thumbelina owns you, as she hitches away around the country with those freakishly sexy thumbs.
That's another thing about Robbins. Things that shouldn't be funny are hilarious. Things that shouldn't be sexy are... well. You get my point. Read the book.

3 out of 5 stars Literary Review.......2006-04-06

Well, I could say a lot about this book; however, one thing I'll say is that it's just a little wordy for me. Too much explanation. I guess I could say four more words: Confused About The Hype.

This title is a Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor book. Cowgirl Kate and her
horse Cocoa understand each other perfectly. Sometimes Cocoa does not
want to work and Kate knows just what to say to get him moving. When
she cannot count all the cattle,Cocoa helps her. Cocoa is always hungry
and Kate works hard to take care of him.
When she can't sleep, he sings her a lullabye.

"Will you fluff my straw?" Cocoa asked.
Cowgirl Kate sighed.
"I am very tired," she said.
But she climbed out of her sleeping bag
and fluffed his straw.
Then she crawled back into her sleeping bag.
"I am hungry," said Cocoa
Cowgirl Kate sighed.
You are always hungry," she said.
But she climbed out of her sleeping bag
andgave him three carrots.
Then she crawled back into her sleeping bag.
"Uh-oh! My water bin is low," said Cocoa.
Cowgirl Kate groaned.
"Why didn't you tell me that before?"
"I didn't think of it before, " said Cocoa.
"First I was thinking about straw.
Then I was thinking about food.
Now I am thinking about water."
"You are doing too much thinking," said Cowboy Kate.

Lewin's paintings are comical and expressive. Kate and Cocoa's expressions are priceless as they stare at each other during this exchange.

5 out of 5 stars "Once there was a cowgirl who needed a cowhorse.".......2006-09-03

The sprightly Cowgirl Kate is a girl with a love of the ranch she lives on and her horse, Cocoa. Cocoa has a sense of humor when it comes to Kate, a frisky challenger in these short chapter stories for young readers who love adventure and horses in particular. Cocoa shows his mettle and his stubbornness, but with an endearing personality that makes Cowgirl Kate smile every time. Part pal, part pet, Cocoa is always hungry, demanding apples and stories from Kate, but doing her bidding in the end, Kate cleverly handling the horse with a bit of outrageous creativity.

In one story, Cowgirl Kate offers Cocoa a surprise after he eats his morning oats. Too curious to bother with his boring breakfast, Cocoa rips open Kate's present and begins chewing it vigorously. Unfortunately, the present doesn't taste so good. Of course not; it is a straw hat, now all chewed up, with three holes instead of two for Cocoa's ears. The joke is on Cocoa, who learns a lesson about patience. In "Bedtime in the Barn", Cowgirl Kate takes her sleeping bag to the barn overnight, prepared to stay with Cocoa. Kate is awakened by Cocoa's incessant demands, "fluff my straw", "I'm hungry", "my water is low". Later, frightened by an owl, Kate curls up next to her horse. The charming paintings by Betsy Lewin are complement the marriage of little girl and her fanciful horse, happy adventures for young readers. Luan Gaines/2006.

4 out of 5 stars Book for horse loving children.......2006-07-23

The book is written in 4 chapters that could be read individually at 4 different sessions. Each tells its own story. The illustrations are clear and concise using bright colors. Children that love horses would like this book. I used it as a read-aloud story at the library but a reader of about 1st grade level would have no trouble reading it.

This is an excellent book for early readers. My 6 year old kindergarten granddaughter is excited about being able to read Chapter books now, and she loved Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa. The colorful illustrations helped her as she sounded out the few words she did not already know.

This is an excellent book for the aspiring cowboy in your house. I have twin cowboys who are almost 4 and they love this book. Their daily attire are cowboy boots and hats, spurs and a side iron(plastic today). So this book helps with their imagination and curiosity. This book is a fun read for Daddy and Mommy also.

5 out of 5 stars Cowboys and Cowgirls: Old West and Modern Day.......2005-09-28

The book is filled with information about cowboys and cowgirls. The majority of the book tells of their activities in the Old West. Their clothes, a roundup and a cattle drive is explained. On the cattle drive we meet the trail boss, wranglers, cookie and others. Their duties are explained. A map supplies the routes of the famous trails and names. The book is very imformative and will make a great supplemental tool in the classroom. Any litttle buckaroo will love the book.

Join Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa on their wild west adventures. This is the second book for the Cowgirl Kate series. Cowgirl Kate loves her job as a rancher and tries to do her best. Cocoa is her hourse and sometimes has a mind of his own! There are four chapters in the book. Each is like a separate adventure for the 2 best friends!

Cocoa the horse was a neat character.. He sounds a lot like a real child instead of a horse!

I would recommend this book to kids who are just learning to read. The words are simple and easy and the chapters are short.

5 out of 5 stars "These partners are going places... together, of course.".......2006-09-03

In another happy pairing of Cowgirl Kate and her horse, Cocoa, Partners contains four more stories of the antics of this spunky cowgirl and her best pal. In the first story, Cocoa is due for new horseshoes, but balks at the suggestion, declaring, "I don't want horseshoes. I want cowboy boots." When Kate tries to fit him with the boots, Cocoa realizes with disappointment that they will never fit a four-legged creature. Once Kate explains that horseshoes are everywhere on the ranch because they bring good luck, Cocoa is delighted, prancing about in his new horseshoes, pleased to be the bearer of good luck. Whether playing hide-and-seek (or as Cocoa likes to call it "hide-and-eat") or practicing roping, Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa are partners in everything, working out compromises and solving every dilemma with good humor. Playful and affectionate, Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa tackle life together, sharing the chores and the fun, because "partners do everything together". Betsy Lewin's paintings are particularly energetic and colorful, full of the action of life on a ranch and the joyful friendship of a little cowgirl and her favorite horse, a chapter book on working together and problem-solving for young readers. Book Description

Cowboy Gene loves his eight cows, and Cowgirl Sue loves her eight cows, and both of them like the fence that keeps their pastures--and cows--apart. But then a tornado blows through and takes the fence with it. The cows are mixed up, and Sue and Gene are in a muddle. Will they ever be able to figure out whose cows are whose?
An all-singing, all-dancing, hard-riding, and high-romancing story of a lasso-tossin' cowgirl, a tough-as-jerky cowboy, and the two herds of do-si-do-ing, polka-prancing, high-stepping heifers that bring them together.

We are all in unison just like those sixteen cows! All the other books in are cabinet are MOOoooVED over when my [...] year old sees this book! It is a delightful read and the rhyme text is fun to read. Definitly a gift that I would be proud to give to any young reader!

5 out of 5 stars I love this book........2005-08-07

This book is such fun. We have read is so much that my two year old now recites it from memory. I get a kick out of it every time. For some reason it just sings.
"In truth, cows aren't too bright."

5 out of 5 stars Terrific early reader book!.......2005-04-06

What a fun book. The rhymes catch you up and the graphics are very appealing. My kindergartner loves to practice her reading with it. Completely worth the money spent, particularly if you have an early reader or a toddler that just likes cows, cowboys, and cowgirls. Very sweet book.

5 out of 5 stars Sixteen Cows is aswesome!.......2003-09-30

I am not sure who enjoys this book more...me or my children! I love reading the rhyming verses and getting my kids involved by "Mooing". It's fun, the illustrations are great, and it's easily become a favorite book in our house!!!

4 out of 5 stars A rootin'-tootin' good read!.......2003-06-18

"Sixteen Cows" is one of those rare children's books that is not only fun for the kiddies, but may actually be more amusing for the adult reading it.

Lonely Cowboy Gene and lovely Cowgirl Sue share a fence, but despite their neighborliness and like herds of eight humorously named bovines, a bit of competition keeps the two at odds. The deus ex machina of a tornado rips down the fence and the cows do the rest, intermingling hopelessly, while refusing to hear the calls to come back to their respective sides. Forced to cooperate, the rival cowpokes finally drop the competition and work together. Can love be far behind?

Clearly there is plenty to like in the book. Many kids' picture books fall down in the text, but not here. Lisa Wheeler's long rhymes capture the reader's heart and flow nicely, complemented well by the sprawling, glowing, watercolor images of Kurt Cyrus. Together there is a synergy that makes this book oddly compelling. Little humorous touches abound - such as the cow names and the items tossed up by the tornado - that may mean more to adults than kids, so while my toddler son likes the book, his dad enjoys it even more. (At the cost of a star, the backstory of the book may be lost on the very young, who may not fully grasp love stories and weddings.)

With its large illustrations and silly/sweet story, this paean to the prairie is clearly designed to be read out loud and often. So pick out your best West Texas drawl, mosey on up to your favorite lil' pardner, and share the fun of "Sixteen Cows."

Book Description

"Giddy up, Cowgirl, it's time to help Momma run some errands!"

"YEE HAW!" says Cowgirl.

Cowgirls love to be helpful.

Cheerful and energetic Cowgirl is determined to help Momma whenever and wherever she can—whether she's finding a lost checkbook at the bank, mailing letters at the post office, or toting laundry to the dry cleaners. But while Cowgirl is always an eager helper, the results are often eyebrow-raising! At the end of a busy day, when Cowgirl's helpfulness begins to backfire, it's Momma who helps Cowgirl, letting her know that trying is just as important as helping. Giddy Up Cowgirl is a story that every parent and child can relate to . . . and learn from!

5 out of 5 stars Rio Suburbia.......2007-02-09

You know hit on a great new kids' writer when his books include such offbeat titles as "Bubble Bath Pirates" and "Punk Farm." Now, I'm a sucker for toddler and youth books about pirates and cowgirl (not to mentionfarm punks), and author/illustrator Krosoczka has a winning storyline, eye-catching illustrations, and lots of humorous miscues in "Giddy Up, Cowgirl."

Neither rural or urban, this cowgirl's as suburban as a station wagon. However, her mind is on the range, full of expressions such as "YEE HAW!" "Saddle up, Ol' Jim! and the venerable "Yippeee Yi YEEEE! Yippee Yi Yo!" (Some Western dialects render that "Yi" as "Ki," but that must originate from a different suburb. "Cowgirl" accompanies When Momma invites "Cowgirl" to help her with some errands, Cowgirl is especially excited; after all, real cowgirls love helping. Unfortunately, Cowgirl's good-hearted intentions exceed her capabilities. Although she finds Momma's wallet beneath the feet of a rough looking feller in the bank, Cowgirl's help inadvertently results in letters flying about the sidewalk, dropped dirty clothes at the cleaners, and a lost grocery list ("Don't worry, Momma, I remember EVERYTHING on that list.") When a dozen eggs spill out onto the parking lot, Momma has already just about lost her patience, and Cowgirl has tears in her big round eyes.

This brings us to the dramatic climax: Momma giving her girl a great big hug, and reassuring her that "Accidents can happen, Cowgirl. Jusat remember, your momma loves you...because you always try." Awww. Any girl (or boy) will love that message. The kicker happens on the next page: Cowgirl opens the door of their SUV--just as a small hatchback drives by. "CRASH!" This last spread is somewhat jarring if taken too seriously, but provides a nice closing laugh. Krosoczka's applies thick, often textured-looking dark and light colors, with a director's combination of closeups and longer, establishing shots. In the peril fraught land of kids' picture books, this young author is definitely home on the range.

5 out of 5 stars Fun for all.........2006-03-04

Giddy Up, Cowgirl was fun to read for myself as well as with my daughter. WE loved the images as well as the story. Considering the `story time' with her a success I took the book to my class the next day.
As I read to my class of 20 five year-olds I could see they clearly related to the story as well. They were engrossed in the moments the little girl experienced. They wanted to see what would happen after the grocery-shopping list blew away in the wind or when the eggs were spilled. (As a mother I especially appreciated the dialogue of love and patience that occurred after the eggs spilled.)

So, after loud declarations of "YeeHaw!" and "Tarnations!" my class and I agreed Giddy Up, Cowgirl is a "thumbs up"!
Some of the comments from my class were:
"I liked it when she shopped for the groceries! Yeah! It was funny!"
"I want to ride her horse! I liked her horse."
"She kept trying. I like it 'cause she kept trying."
"I really liked it when her mommy gave her a hug." (My personal favorite as well.)

After reading and discussing the book we all agreed that we would try our best to help each other out just as the little girl did.

It is wonderful to find a book that I can share with my daughter and read to my class knowing they would connect with the characters and context. The story teaches us to keep trying and it positively reinforced being helpful.

Keep up the good work Mr. Krosoczka (pronounced Crow-ZAH-ska)! We're looking forward to your next book.
