    Book Description

In a culture where the supernatural possessed an immediacy now strange to us, magic was of great importance both in the literary and mythic tradition and in ritual practice. Recently, ancient magic has hit a high in popularity, both as an area of scholarly inquiry and as one of general, popular interest. In Magic, Witchcraft, and Ghosts in the Greek and Roman Worlds Daniel Ogden presents three hundred texts in new translations, along with brief but explicit commentaries. This is the first book in the field to unite extensive selections from both literary and documentary sources. Alongside descriptions of sorcerers, witches, and ghosts in the works of ancient writers, it reproduces curse tablets, spells from ancient magical recipe books, and inscriptions from magical amulets. Each translation is followed by a commentary that puts it in context within ancient culture and connects the passage to related passages in this volume. Authors include the well known (Sophocles, Herodotus, Plato, Aristotle, Virgil, Pliny) and the less familiar, and extend across the whole of Greco-Roman antiquity.

    5 out of 5 stars A must-have for classical & esoteric boffins.......2007-10-10

Daniel Ogden is so dedicated to his efforts of collection. I kept taking this out of the library for weeks at a time before I realized I could just purchase it. A must-have for anyone studying the classics for fun, research or enrichment.

4 out of 5 stars note: this is a sourcebook, not a story book!.......2004-10-21

If you're not involved in research or the scholarly pursuit of this subject, or if you don't enjoy reading footnotes and obscure annecdotes, then this is not the book for you. However, that said, this is the only book I've come across with such a detailed account of the subject. I've used this text again and again for research and reference. Ogden's commentary on the texts is precise and to the point, too. I'd highly recommend this book, but just know what it is before you buy it.

    Book Description

This is a substantially expanded and completely revised edition of a book originally published in 1988 as Maenads, Martyrs, Matrons, Monastics. The book is a collection of translations of primary texts relevant to women's religion in Western antiquity, from the fourth century BCE to the fifth century CE. The selections are taken from the plethora of ancient religions, including Judaism and Christianity, and are translated from the six major languages of the Greco-Roman world: Greek, Latin, Aramaic, Hebrew, Syriac, and Coptic. The texts are grouped thematically in six sections: Observances, Rituals, and Festivals; Researching Real Women: Documents to, from and by Women; Religious Office; New Religious Affiliation and Conversion; Holy, Pious, and Exemplary Women; and The Feminine Divine. Women's Religions in the Greco-Roman World provides a unique and invaluable resource for scholars of classical antiquity, early Christianity and Judaism, and women's religion more generally.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Spirit and Reality of the Women in the Greco-Roman World.......2004-02-22

WOMEN'S RELIGIONS IN THE GRECO-ROMAN WORLD: A SOURCEBOOK by Ross Shepard Kraemer is a revision of her 1988 work MAENADS, MARTYRS, MATRONS, MONASTICS but it could not have come at a better time. The interest in women's spirituality of all sorts has blossomed since the inception of the first version.
This book is divided up into six section dealing with different aspects of women's religion in the Greco-Roman World: Observances, Rituals, and Festivals; Researching Real Women: Documents to, from, and by Women; Religious Office; New Religious Affiliation and Conversion; Holy, Pious and Exemplary Women; and The Feminine Divine. Each section has an introduction and Kraemer is not hesitant in explaining the current thoughts and controversies in the scholarly world. She is also very forthcoming about her own changes in opinion since 1988. I really enjoyed her honesty. Each text also contained a bibliography of its own so if one is interested in a particular text or subject matter more information will be easy to find. I was more interested in the Pagan subject matter, but the material on women in Judaism and Christianity (including Gnostic) is just as fascinating. The last section was by far my favorite for what it said about the ideas of the feminine divine in all the religious spheres.
This book will be of significant interest to those involved in women's studies, women's spirituality, the ancient world of the Greco-Romans, as well as those interested in the cultural change and exchange between the world of the Pagan, the Jews and the Christians.

This volume contains numerous original translations of ancient poetry, inscriptions, and documents, all of which illuminate the multifaceted nature of sexuality in antiquity.
The detailed introduction provides full social and historical context for the sources, and guides students on how to use the material most effectively. Themes such as marriage, prostitution, and same-sex attraction are presented comparatively, with material from the Greek and Roman worlds shown side by side. This approach allows readers to interpret the written records with a full awareness of the different context of these separate but related societies. Commentaries are provided throughout, focusing on vocabulary and social and historical context.
This is the first major sourcebook on ancient sexuality; it will be of particular use on related courses in classics/ancient history and gender studies.

This collection of documents in medieval history is designed to accompany the recently revised MEDIEVAL EUROPE: A SHORT HISTORY by C. Warren Hollister and Judith Bennett. However the diverse selection of sources also makes it a useful supplement for courses in Western Civilization. As in previous editions, this reader continues to provide a lucid and approachable introduction to each of the documents and a special chapter devoted to visual sources in medieval history. In addition to these hallmark features, the fourth edition includes new Internet resources, thought questions at both the reading and chapter level, and a more geographically diverse range of readings.

3 out of 5 stars An Excellent Medieval Study.......2005-09-07

Medieval Europe: A Short Sourcebook, 4th Edition is a useful companion book to Medieval Europe: A Short History as it provides complementary information that fleshes out the private writings and the people who made history by providing the back story to everything that is reported as having taken place in the Middle Ages. Contained within these writings is the arc of development of the Catholic church for both its supplicants and leaders, as well as the elements of man's attitude towards the women in their lives and what they considered proper behavior, what they feared, and what they subsequently attempted to control.
The book begins with writings detailing the transition from a Roman World and ends, fittingly, with the Age of Contradictions. One is privileged to read of Hypatia, the female philosopher who was martyred by being stoned to death for being an intelligent and outspoken female philosopher. Another female who was subjected to tyranny by her husband but nonetheless was able to read and leave written instructions for her son is Dhuoda. She is mentioned in passing in Medieval Europe: A Short History, but it is in A Short Sourcebook that one is able to fully understand not only Dhuoda's plight but also her faith and her suffering. And these tales of faith are only some of many that tell of how faith affects the lives of the common people as well as the more religious as evidenced by letters between the faithful. While this book does not provide all the answers necessary to fully comprehend Medieval Europe, it is useful as a supplement to the primary textbook, and even takes some of the literature one step farther as well as providing seemingly mundane regulations that provided guidance during a time of great expansion.
As noted in the Sourcebook, Medieval Europe was "a cycle of faith, fervor, and fortune" that "reinforced medieval piety and strengthened the medieval economy" and helped "inaugurate Europe's first great age of expansion" (173). The information provided in such passages as "The Customs of Newcastle-upon-Tyne" and the "Regulations for the May Fair at Provins" allow the reader to uncover how an expanding continent was attempting to maintain control over day-to-day business. In addition, historical documents such as "The Magna Charta" and "The Strasbourg Oaths" are included which the editors utilize to flesh out and complete the historical picture contained in the A Short History. There are other historical aspects that are a treat to read such as "The Greenland Saga", which documents a small portion of Viking history. This particular saga and that of "The Russian Primary Chronicle" illustrate the impact other countries had on Medieval Europe, information that is only briefly discussed in A Short History.
The role of women in medieval society, particularly in Carolingian Europe, was not one of equality, even if those women were in leadership positions in the church. Their presence, brought about through necessity, was abused by neglect at the hands of their husbands, and even some of the church leaders. What one will find in this book is that through the writings provided by a varying group of women one is offered a similar yet diverse view of how women were treated. And by studying these writings, one will find that it is the women who willingly locked themselves up in an abbey who were in a much better position to maintain their own freedom than the women who were locked up by their husbands or caretakers. And one can see this through the excellent examples of letters from the women in the abbeys, through those of educated women such as Dhuoda, to a morality play provided by a nun, Rosswitha, and on to a piece entitled Memories, by Dona Leonor Lopez de Cordoba who has the talent to both infuriate as well as make one feel sorry for her. And with regards to writings about the church, one can see the direction in which the Catholic Church was proceeding by reading the "Charges of Heresy Against Jan Hus," plus several charges of heresy against others, as well as their treatment of Joan of Arc.
Taken either together with A Short History, or on its own, A Short Sourcebook is a valuable piece of information that will help any student become more familiar with the mindset of Europeans living in the Middle Ages, as well as completing the historical picture of how society went about its business, whether it be merchants, the government, or the Catholic church.

      4 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2005-08-19

This is an excellent and comprehensive collection of sources from the Middle Ages in Europe. Divided into thirds (a section each on the Early, High and Late middle ages), it has a solid representation of source materials on religious and political life. Its only shortcoming (and the reason why I could only give it 4 stars) is its lack of materials about (or by) women - given the attitudes, expectations and limited opportunities this is not surprising; still, I wish there was at least some attention given them.

      Book Description

Revised to include new selections and updated bibliographical material, the second edition of this popular sourcebook offers a rich, revealing look at everyday Roman life. It provides clear, lively translations of a fascinating array of documents drawn from Latin and Greek source material--from personal letters, farming manuals, medical texts, and recipes to poetry, graffiti, and tombstone inscriptions. Each selection has been translated into readable, contemporary English. This edition includes more than 50 additional selections that introduce new topics and expand coverage of existing topics. In addition, the commentary on all the selections has been revised to reflect the recent scholarship of social and cultural historians. Extensive annotations, abundant biographical notes, maps, appendices, cross-references to related topics, and a newly-updated bibliography provide readers with the historical and cultural background material necessary to appreciate the selections. Arranged thematically into chapters on family life, housing, education, entertainment, religion, and other important topics, the translations reveal the ambitions and aspirations not only of the upper class, but of the average Roman citizen as well. They tell of the success and failure of Rome's grandiose imperialist policies and also of the pleasures and hardships of everyday life. Wide-ranging and lively, the second edition of As the Romans Did offers the most lucid account available of Roman life in all its diversity. Ideal for courses in Ancient Roman History, Social History of Rome, Roman Civilization, and Classics, it will also appeal to readers interested in ancient history.

5 out of 5 stars Both educating and enjoyable.......2006-12-14

Excellent. You will actually have a good time reading this if it is required for a class. There are plenty of funny antecdotes throughout. Many of the examples of people interacting seem like they could be happening now. The great thing about this book is that more than half of the material is ancient sources. Letters about marriage, politics, superstition, it is all taught by example, which takes you into the history much more. Wonder what the people actually thought about gladitorial combats? What happened when someone had to go travelling? If there's two sides to the story, both sides are presented in this book.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable source on life as a Roman.......2005-10-17

I must say this was an incredibly fun sourcebook to read. At times it had me laughing with humorous quotations such as; "I am amazed, o wall, that you have not collapsed and fallen, since you must bear the tedious stupidities of so many scrawlers" and at other times I would shudder; "Good God, what scrawny little slaves they were! Their skin was everywhere embroidered with purple welts from their many beatings. Their backs, scarred from floggings... their complexions were an ugly yellow..."

Using a slew of both primary and secondary sources, Jo-Ann Shelton takes us through the life of the Romans. Covering topics as varied as slavery, provincial administration, the family unit, the magistrates and occupations, we are brought directly into Roman life with all of its practices, norms, values and peculiarities. The key feature of this book is the focus on the common Roman and how they lived with a section devoted entirely to woman in Roman society, a much overlooked topic. From dinner parties to funeral clubs, all aspects of the common Romans life are discussed.

In all a very worthwhile book to own and use as both a source of reference and entertainment!

      5 out of 5 stars Vivid!.......2005-05-19

Although this book was recquired reading for a Roman History class I took, I found myself really enjoying the read. Shelton does a superb job in collecting sources to paint an engaging and colorful picture of Roman society. I've read a lot of books about Roman history(due to the sweetness of its action), but few make the Romans seem to come alive quite like this one. If you like Roman history like me, this would be an excellent choice for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars the best sourcebook.......2004-05-10

Simply the best sourcebook for teaching Roman History. While Ms. Shelton is obsessed with footnotes, she has organized a myriad of helpful documents in the best possible way. This book is a real treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Honestly, no others compare.......2004-01-15

I had to read this book for one of my University courses on Roman history (the first half), and while the other books I was forced to go through were dry and rather boring, unless your mind was concentrating hard, this book managed to bring Roman history and life ALIVE.

The footnotes given are an absolute gem - to me, they WERE the high point of the book. Shelton does a fantastic job of explaining what certain words, phrases, rituals or just ideas the Romans held in the past.

As stated previously, the book isn't "dry", by this I mean there isn't an action by action replay of things that don't really illustrate the true life they lived. Instead, there are bits and pieces of writings from various Romans about their life - such as a Roman writing a letter to a friend to tell him why no one attends his dinners anymore, (even with the lure of free food) because they can't stand to hear him recite his boring poetry before, during and after dinner! The humour in some of these pieces really made it all come alive.

      Excellent read.

The 57 documents in this sourcebook introduce readers to many of the major topics of Roman history, from the period of the Twelve Tables (c.451 BC) to the later Roman empire: the structure of Roman society, slavery, the position of women and the nature of family life, farm-management and agricultural practices, scientific and medical knowledge, political and religious life, the military, and the non-Roman world beyond the frontiers. Each of the selections has been chosen for its historical significance and intrinsic interest, and is introduced and annotated by the editor. Extended selections from works such as Petronius' 'Satyricon' and Suetonius' biography of the mad emperor Caligula allow readers to encounter the events and personalities of the era at first hand, while maps, suggestions for further reading, and a chronological table aid interpretation. The collection will be of interest to anyone who wants to understand the nature of the Roman world. It is an ideal supplement for narrative survey courses or can be used independently as a theme-based approach to Roman history.

In the aftermath of Alexander the Great's death in 323 B.C. and the resultant civil war among claimants to his throne, writes historian Margaret Williams, many Jews left Judea and settled in the Hellenistic cities of the eastern Mediterranean. During the Pax Romana and the various campaigns in Judea in the 1st century A.D., the Diaspora spread even further--to Spain, the Crimea, and the interior of Europe. They recorded their travels; so, too, did various chroniclers of the Roman Empire. Williams gathers their testimonies in this primary-source reference work, which touches on matters such as the establishment of synagogues in Jewish townships, Jewish interaction with Greek and Roman authorities, and funerary customs, among many other topics. --Gregory McNamee

          Book Description

As one of the few groups in the Greco-Roman world to resist cultural assimilation, the Jews remained an object of fascination throughout antiquity. Greek and Roman writers devoted much space to them, but few bothered to learn the facts about Jews, preferring to report stereotypes and rumor. Evidence does exist, however, to show what real Jews were like in antiquity and how they interacted with the Greeks and Romans, both pagan and Christian.

In The Jews among the Greeks and Romans, Margaret Williams assembles, assesses, and contextualizes literary and archaeological evidence relating to Jewish communities outside the land of Israel. The sourcebook covers the period beginning with the Diaspora that resulted from the chaos of Alexander the Great's death in 323 BCE and concluding with the demise of the Jewish Patriarchate around 420 CE. This was a time which saw, first, the rapid opening up of opportunities for Jews and then, in the century after Constantine, the gradual but inexorable raising of barriers against them.

Newly translated from the Greek and Latin, the documents cover a broad array of topics, including religion, customs, festivals, repression, citizenship, military service, economics, intermarriage, and conversion from Jew to Gentile and Gentile to Jew. While previous collections have concentrated on literary texts, the present volume gives prominence to papyrological and epigraphic source material. Composed in accordance with Greco-Roman epigraphic conventions but written by Jews, these texts--some only recently discovered--constitute an extraordinarily rich source of information about the values and practices of Jews in antiquity.

              Book Description

It is widely recognized that Roman law is an important source of information about women in the Roman world, and can present a more rounded and accurate picture than literary sources. This sourcebook fully exploits the rich legal material of the imperial period - from Augustus (31 BCE - 14 CE) to the end of the western Roman Empire (476 CE), incorporating both pagan and Christian eras, and explaining the rights women held under Roman law, the restrictions to which they were subject, and legal regulations on marriage, divorce and widowhood. The main focus is on the major legal texts (the Digest, the Institutes of Gaius, the Code of Justinian and the Theodosian Code), but a significant number of non-legal documentary sources are included. These are particularly important as they illustrate how the law worked in practice, and how this practice (particularly in the provinces) could differ from the letter of the law. Accessible English translations are enhanced by clear, concise background material, which includesuseful explanation of historical and geographical context, and a helpful glossary of Roman legal and administrative terms completes the volume. Comprehensive and user-friendly, this will be a core text for students, an illuminating aid for non-specialists, and an essential reference guide for more advanced scholars
