      Exceeded my expectations. Book was on time and in very good condition.

      4 out of 5 stars World development from the beginning of time through 1450.......2000-01-12

      I recently decided to return to college after being away for nearly 20 years raising a family. This text was one of my first courses and I found it easy to understand, well laid-out, and concise. Generally speaking, it dealt with issues thoroughly, though I would have liked to have seen more coverage on gender issues through the ages. Early civilization was primarily patriarchal, yet women played an intricate part in the development of society through the ages. I think any student interested in learning about the origins of civilization would benefit greatly by using this text. The chapters covered topics well, but weren't excessively lengthy. The companion document book worked well with this text, preventing any confusion as to the time table involved. This book should be included as a reference or required reading for any history major. Mr. Stearns did a wonderful job covering a large span of time in simple terms and in few pages. Having a wonderful professor, along with easy-to-understand text, influenced me to add history as one of my majors--along with my major of English. I only hope my second semester in history goes as well as my first!

              5 out of 5 stars Balanced Review of World History.......2004-02-11

              I found Peter Sterns' book worthwile. He seems to provides a balanced overview of World History. He neither neglects the contributions of civivlizations outside the West nor diminishes the dominating role the West has played for the last few hundred years or so.
              I read this to fill in the gaps in my knowledge of history and I think he gave me a background to understand more detailed accounts.

                    Book Description

                    Thoroughly revised edition of the classic text on polymer processing

                    The Second Edition brings the classic text on polymer processing thoroughly up to date with the latest fundamental developments in polymer processing, while retaining the critically acclaimed approach of the First Edition. Readers are provided with the complete panorama of polymer processing, starting with fundamental concepts through the latest current industry practices and future directions. All the chapters have been revised and updated, and four new chapters have been added to introduce the latest developments.

                    Readers familiar with the First Edition will discover a host of new material, including:
                    * Blend and alloy microstructuring
                    * Twin screw-based melting and chaotic mixing mechanisms
                    * Reactive processing
                    * Devolatilization--theory, mechanisms, and industrial practice
                    * Compounding--theory and industrial practice
                    * The increasingly important role of computational fluid mechanics
                    * A systematic approach to machine configuration design

                    The Second Edition expands on the unique approach that distinguishes it from comparative texts. Rather than focus on specific processing methods, the authors assert that polymers have a similar experience in any processing machine and that these experiences can be described by a set of elementary processing steps that prepare the polymer for any of the shaping methods. On the other hand, the authors do emphasize the unique features of particular polymer processing methods and machines, including the particular elementary step and shaping mechanisms and geometrical solutions.

                    Replete with problem sets and a solutions manual for instructors, this textbook is recommended for undergraduate and graduate students in chemical engineering and polymer and materials engineering and science. It will also prove invaluable for industry professionals as a fundamental polymer processing analysis and synthesis reference.

                          Covers the current state of theoretical and experimental studies of oligomeric mixed systems from the physico-chemical standpoint and provides a technologist with the means for the quantitative approach to preparing liquid oligomeric compositions and choosing proper operating conditions for their processing into materials and articles. Recommendations are given on the practical use of found physico-patterns as well as the physico-chemical analysis of the effect of the composition ingredients on the final properties.

                            Book Description

                            This textbook covers the basic principles and the major phenomena encountered in polymer flow and processing. The problems found in the plastics processing industry are mostly related to the design and control of machines and equipment for producing satisfactory plastics products at a
                            competitive price. In order to achieve this, one attempts to optimize the design parameters of machines and the operating conditions: temperature, speed, cooling, etc. It is also necessary to understand and control the relations between the formulation, the rheological behavior and the
                            transformation properties. Mechanics, thermodynamics and rheology all play a significant role in polymer processing and this text introduces the reader to the basic equations and models directly applicable to industrial processes.

                            Book Description

                            Polymer Processing: Principles and Design presents the background required to design processes for thermoplastics. Often engineers are hired by the polymer industry to develop and design processes for thermoplastics, to design polymer processing machinery, to develop processes for new polymers, and to optimize existing processes. However, at best, they receive only a little training in polymer science and no training in the design of polymer processes. This book emphasizes the fundamental concepts that allow the student and the practicing engineer to carry out practical design decisions. While most books leave the student with equations only, Polymer Processing: Principles and Design provides the numerical methods required to solve the equations using the personal computer and easy-to-use IMSL numerical subroutines, and ensures a solid foundation in the principles underlying the design of polymer processing techniques.

                            4 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2000-09-20

                            This book is great for a student or a practicing engineer. It starts with the fundamentals of polymer science and ends with more specific processing problems. There are design problems at the end of each chapter for which solutions are not provided. This is great for a college textbook, but is not very useful for the practicing engineer. Overall, this book is well worth it.

                            4 out of 5 stars Good textbook for students and engineers.......2006-04-27

                            This book was published in 1979 and is out of print now, but still has a high value as a textbook for students and engineers.
                            It covers most of the important aspects of polymer processing. The book is compact, but not only fundamental but also advanced theoretical treatments are described as well. Explanations using dimensional analysis are very informative too.
                            Personally, appendix B describing two-dimensional non-Newtonian melt flow theory in screw extruders is quite important.

                                  Book Description

                                  As researchers seek replacements for banned, ozone-depleting foaming agents, the authors of Thermoplastic Foam Processing: Principles and Development strive to develop a better understanding of foaming processes and find solutions for day-to-day practice. This book presents the latest research in foam extrusion and physical foaming agents with a strong focus on the interaction of material components in the foaming process. As part of the Polymeric Foams series and a companion to the volume, Foam Extrusion: Principles and Practice (2000), the book includes new topics such as polymer blends and mechanical properties, and further develops several vital topics appearing in Foam Extrusion, such as extensional rheology and solubility/diffusivity. The text also addresses factors that affect the critical interaction between polymer and gas in the foaming process, such as polymer plasticization, gas dissolution, phase separation, foaming, and stabilization. Written by experts, the book provides clear information on the mechanisms and the practical conditions experienced during nucleation and cell growth. In the midst of new research for alternative, environmentally friendly foaming agents, Thermoplastic Foam Processing: Principles and Development gives the reader a clear understanding of the current trends in R & D and an up-to-date review of the state of the art in thermoplastic foam processing. This book provides useful tools for the development and validation of innovative physical foaming agent and polymer combinations for current and future research.
