5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-09-28

Being a "baby boomer" from the Vietnam era, I think this book will help explain to my grandchildren about Grandpa and his war time. It is beautifully illustrated and tender. I wish I'd had this book when I went to see the Wall with an 8th-grade girl who made an etching of her Grandpa's name. It may not mean as much to anyone who hasn't been touched directly by the Vietnam war, but it touched my heart.

4 out of 5 stars The Wall Review.......2007-05-23

The Wall by Eve Bunting is an incredible story of remembering. It all starts when a little boy and his father visit the Vietnam War Memorial. The father, who wishes to find the name and remember the good times with him, takes a piece of paper and and pencil and traces the name off of the wall. The little boy, who just wishes his grandfather was there with him, sadly watches another little boy and his grandpa on a walk. This book about rememberance will make you sad until the very end. Eve Bunting does a great job setting the mood at the Vietnam War Memorial. I give this book a thumbs up and believe it's the best children's book ever. Read The Wall by Eve Bunting to find out what happens in the end.

5 out of 5 stars The Wall by: Eve Bunting.......2007-05-22

Loosing a relative can be tough, especially if your close to them, or too young to ever experience or meet them. All you can do is wonder. The book The Wall by: Eve Bunting, is aobut a dad and his son that go and visit the Vietnam War Memorial in memory of the dad's father, or the son's grandfather that died in the Vietnam War. Eve Bunting describes what happens there from a child's point of view. It is very realistic, and makes you feel like you are really there.
This book not only teaches little kid's lessons, but is good for even adults. IT really took me back and made me think. It made me think of how valuable our lives really are, and when we die, who is really affected by it. Also, it taught me that loosing someone you love doesn't always have to be sad, especially if they have died fighting for what they believe in. So, if somebody you know died, think of the positive side. Reading this book may take you back, and let you think of why they were so special.

5 out of 5 stars Read This Book!.......2004-07-27

If you lost a loved one in Vietnam then you'll understand the poingnancy, intimacy, loss, and anguish of the writers of these letters found throughout the book. It brings out the grim and stark realization that behind every name on the Wall is a story as told by the families who suffered a loss. The most important thing though is the book is about remembering those men and women who served and paid the ultimate sacrifice.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2002-01-16

Shrapnel In the Heart is a book to be read by everyone no matter what generation they were born in. Shrapnel In The Heart is a book that has letters and rememberances left behind at the Vietnam War Memorial. Some of the letters tell the story about the people behind the letter. The stories are sad, but the courage of the men and women is a true inspiration. The people written about in this book were extrememly young (18, 19, 20) and it seems like they died in vain. But through their letters that were left behind it is easy to see that these young men knew their duty and refused to shirk from it. These men and women are true heroes.

5 out of 5 stars I wish all young people had to read this!.......2000-04-13

I read this book for a college history course and until now have thought very little about war, military, or world politics. Young people today rarely understand or realize what goes with becoming a soldier. This book gives real images of the devastation war brings from the people who lived through the tragedy of losing their loved ones. It opens our eyes to things we just shouldn't close our eyes on.

3 out of 5 stars Do I dare?.......2000-02-09

Do I dare to give this book a less-than-glowing review? I am inclined to do so not because of the power and dignity of the people and the stories in the book--those speak for themselves. It was Palmer (the author) that bothered me. As I was reading the book, I could not help but feel that she was trying to manipulate me, tugging at heartstrings that needed no tug to be moved by these heartfelt stories. I felt a bit patronized by her. A good book (or movie, or whatever), if it moves me, should not make me feel the push; this one did, and it left me feeling the way people usually feel when they were pushed in a direction that they would have gone anyway--irritated.

5 out of 5 stars Don't miss this one!.......1998-09-22

If you have any interest at all in the VietNam War you should not miss this book. It puts a face on all those whose names are inscribed on The Wall. Guaranteed to break your heart!

4 out of 5 stars The Vietnam Wall - Its Offerings.......2007-08-24

This is a moving book about the artifacts left at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington,D.C. Reading and seeing the pictures, about the different artifacts: stories, letters and notes are of interest on there own admission, but to tie it to the individual name on that black slab of granite, America's tombstone of the Vietnam War is mythical.

Have picked it up a number of times, since reading and digesting its contents.

5 out of 5 stars I give this book 50 stars.......2006-02-07

No matter how you may feel about the war, the humanity revealed in this book will touch your heart. A little keepsake or memento left behind to a buddy, brother, husband or father is more than politics or justification of warfare it is about an offering to a loved one that died. That old saying a picture is worth a thousand words is true with this book, I found myself just staring blindly at insignificant objects that in any other place could easily be looked over, but here its is given to pay homage to the dead and maybe give a little peace to the living.

5 out of 5 stars very good.......2004-03-05

Eventhough I do not understand the Vietnam war, and I was not alive at the time, this book really touched me. The guilt, pain, and loss that the offerings people had left made me cry. There was a picture with a little girl and her dad, and a veteren was telling about the day he met the man in the photo. I think that story will stick with me forever. I saw the pain of innocense lost through the artifacts, and the truth of the poeple in that war was revealed. I reconmmend this book to anyone from that era to the youth of mine.

5 out of 5 stars A Tribute.......2004-01-14

I sobbed through Offerings at the Wall. Sobbed for the loss of innocence and young lives lost. For anyone raised in the 1960s this should be a must read to understand and come to grips with the imapct the Vietnam War had on our generation. God speed to our veterans and to the brave young men and women of today's military still fighting for our freedom. Please take the time to thank a veteran for his/her service to our country.

5 out of 5 stars Very touching, makes you think........2002-11-11

I bought this book awile ago. Some of the things left behind have letters or notes attached to them. Very chilling. Awesome book for anyone. I love it.

4 out of 5 stars Experiencing the Wall through photography.......2002-04-11

This book has few words - it's a photographic journey about the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial. What struck me from the photos was how the Wall has achieved a sort of common ground, where conscientious objectors and veterans can both come to pay homage to what was, by all accounts, a tragic war. The photos are curtesy of the Smithsonian. I'm giving this book four out of five stars because I thought the narrative was a bit hackneyed. I wanted the photos to speak for themselves.

Collins Publishers and Sal Lopes have done an awesome job of capturing the moving memorial in a moving photodocumentary book. This is a must for every family and every photographer. It has a special place on my bookshelf, and though I am only 20, it moves me in a way not too many other books do. As a photographer, the work is awesome and captivating... you must buy this book...

The Wall designed by Maya Lin, then a 21 year-old student at Yale is one of the most visited monument in Washington, DC. If the war was controversial, the winning design also caused quite a stir nationwide. Arguments erupted against this "black gash of shame". The controversy was resolved by adding a bronze statue and a flagpole.

The book is a pictorial testimony of the millions of people who came by to remember the fallen and to reminisce the past. These are either parents, wives, children, veterans, friends, or visitors who came to pay tribute to those who sacrificed themselves in the name of FREEDOM.

They are gone, but live forever in our hearts.

Empathy and love helped create this sensitive photographic study of the Viet Nam War Memorial. One cannot view each stunning photograph without emotion and deep gratitude. This book still remains on our bookshelf so we will always remember. This is a heart-felt offering.

Book Description

Since its creation in 1982, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial has become the most visited National Park Services site. Each year, 4.5 million people come to the Wall. Many of them leave letters or other special objects. Every night, park rangers collect and inventory these mementos—now numbering well over 90,000—and put them into government storage.

Michael Sofarelli, the son of a Vietnam War veteran, has combed through the archives searching for the most gripping letters and objects: a mother awaiting word of her missing son, a former comrade recounting a battle story, a pair of well-worn ballet slippers, and a collection of cigars. These items are not only a tribute to the fallen soldiers; they pay tribute as well to the families and friends who waited at home and the comrades who have never forgotten their brothers. They tell the story of a war that is still being fought by many who served and a conflict that changed the lives of many Americans forever.

Mike Sofarelli, a Marine, came home missing part of his leg but he came back whole.
The proof of this is the wonderful book his son, Michael, has written as a tribute to him. The book is hopeful, heartbreaking and, at some points, wryly amusing.
It tells the story of how the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial, The "Wall" went from being reviled when the design was unveiled to the most visited site in the National Parks system.
The true authors are the thousands of loved ones who left rememberances near the monument.

    Book Description

War is hell, and the return to civilian life afterwards can be a minefield as well, especially for veterans of a "bad war." Soldiers coming home from Vietnam faced unique challenges as veterans of a controversial war whose divisiveness permeated every step of the re-entry and readjustment process. In his balanced and highly readable account, Vietnam Veterans since the War, sociologist Wilbur J. Scott tells the story of how the veterans and their allies organized to articulate their concerns and to win concessions from a reluctant Congress, federal agencies, and courts.

Scott draws on published records, hours of personal interviews with veterans, and his experience as an infantry platoon leader in Vietnam to explore the major social movements among his fellow veterans in the crucial years from 1967 to 1990, including the antiwar movement, the successful effort to win recognition of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) by the American Psychiatric Association, the establishment of veterans' outreach centers, the controversy over the defoliant Agent Orange and its long-term effects, and the struggle to create the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. His new afterword brings the story up to date and demonstrates that while the United States' involvement in Vietnam continues to be controversial, many of the tensions engendered by the war have been overcome.

    Book Description

When a dying mother hears the voice of her son thirty years after his death in Vietnam, she recalls the promise he made in 1968 as he boarded a military plane headed overseas: that one day again she would hear his voice. But it is not until she learns about the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., that she is able to decipher Jesse's mysterious message. Alicia realizes she must journey to the wall to touch her son's name and honor his memory, and like a spark kindling a new flame, her decision inspires her warring children to join her.

Let Their Spirits Dance is the story of a family's journey across America toward reconciliation and hope. Seen through the eyes of Alicia's newly divorced schoolteacher daughter, Teresa, the story uncovers Teresa's own belief, as revealed to her by Don Florencio, ancient seer and mystic, that Jesse would one day return in a new form. Among others joining Alicia and Teresa on the trip are Jesse's ex-addict brother Paul, his flamboyant sister Priscilla, and his whiz-kid nephew Michael, whose talk of parallel universes suspends reality, connecting the living with the dead.

The cross-country trip gathers old friends of Jesse's, garners the good wishes of strangers and elicits media coverage from coast to coast. With questions about Jesse's death that were never fully explained by the military, along with a mysterious plaguing phone call received from Vietnam two years after he died, the family comes to realize that the Wall is the magnet luring them on: the answers are there.

Stella Pope Duartes stunning debut novel portrays a family struggling with the universal scars suffered by all who have been touched by death through war. With this novel, Pope Duarte connects family, friends, and an entire nation with the names on the Wall, honoring the men and women who served in Vietnam as well as those left behind who watched and waited, but never forgot.

4 out of 5 stars A story of one family's involvement in the Vietnam War.......2004-03-23

LET THEIR SPIRITS DANCE by Stella Pope Duarte

The debut novel by Stella Pope Duarte, LET THEIR SPIRITS DANCE revolves around a Hispanic family's trip from their Arizona home to the Vietnam Wall, in a journey where they question themselves, their beliefs, and remember the family member they lost to the Vietnam War.

School teacher Teresa Ramirez has held on to the knowledge, all these 30 years, that her brother Jesse knew he was not going to return from the Vietnam War. On his departure at the airport, he whispers to her that he will not be back, and to take care of their mother. This memory haunts her when they get word six months later of his death while trying to help out a fellow soldier who was shot down. Thirty years later, when Teresa's mother Alicia informs everyone she has heard Jesse call to her, Teresa is more than just upset, and wonders if her mother is hallucinating or if her mother truly has these powers where she can hear from the dead.

Then, in a surprising turn of events, they are informed that because of an error made by the government all those years ago, Alicia has $90,000 coming to her because of Jesse's death. This seals the deal - Alicia informs the family they are going to DC to touch Jesse's' name on the wall. It doesn't matter that Teresa is being sued by her husband's girlfriend for assault, or that Teresa is waiting to hear about her soon-to-be divorce from Ray. Alicia says it will all take care of itself, and that they are all to go on this journey together. Alicia's health is in jeopardy, but she is determined to do this, as the last thing she may do on this earth.

Duarte tells the story with flashbacks, the point of view coming mostly from Teresa, as she remembers her childhood with Jesse and her other siblings Priscilla and Paul, happy moments as well as sad moments that continue to bother her into the present. She remembers her father, who was unfaithful to her mother Alicia, a man that Teresa had no respect for. She also remembers the stories she heard from an old Aztec medicine man, Don Florencio, who talked about the ancient Aztecs, their heritage, about dead spirits and other things that Teresa wants to believe are true.

While the first half of the book is filled with mostly flashbacks and helps set up the story, the second half details the journey that the Ramirez family and friends take, as they drive in a caravan of vehicles to their destination in Washington. They become the favorite of the media, thanks to the help of nephew Michael and his computer, even garnering the attention of President Clinton. Relationships are mended and created as the trip ensues, while more and more people join the caravan, and when they finally reach their final destination, it is a moment of sadness and remembrance as they embrace those that have left them.

This reviewer enjoyed LET THEIR SPIRITS DANCE. The story of the Vietnam War and how it affected one family, as well as one group of people, the Hispanics, was eye opening. The ending was expected, yet it also was climatic in that one had waited so long for this journey to end. It was not truly a happy ending, but what made it happy was their realization that our loved ones are never really far from us, only separated by death. Teresa's story involved one's questioning of faith and religious beliefs, and reconciling one's past with the present. Her problems are resolved in a manner that surprised this reviewer, but it was a wonderful ending to her story as well as Alicia's journey in search of her son. Some readers may find the politics in this book to be opposite of what they feel, as Duarte does not hold back on her views of the war, told through the eyes of the characters in this story. Other than that, four stars for LET THEIR SPIRIT DANCE.

5 out of 5 stars Score one for the teacher!!!.......2004-03-01

Stella Pope Duarte's bio says she is a university instructor and a high school counselor. I'll bet she took a lot of writing and/or literature classes during her school years, because her debut novel is nothing short of a miracle, considering how publishers continue to release poorly constructed, poorly edited books.

From the first sentence -- "The passion vine bloomed until late November the year Jesse died."

-- until the last paragraph --

". . . No one knows if a spirit can balance on the point of a pin, or send light beams when we least expect. I looked down at the Wall. Light shone from it like a laser beam reaching us flying overhead. It's OK that I knew my brother wasn't coming home. I was supposed to. It got me to write this book, to tell his story to the world."

-- Ms. Duarte's elegant, mystical prose casts a spell on her reader.

Duarte weaves the story of a Chicano family torn asunder by the death of its beloved son/brother/cousin Jesse Ramirez during the Viet Name War in 1968.

Before he boarded the plane, Jesse promised his mother that she would hear his voice again. When she finally hears his voice one night, some thirty years after his death, she cannot rest until she visits the Viet Nam Memorial Wall to touch his name.

Jesse's family has not fared well since his death. One of his sisters, Teresa, is in the middle of a difficult divorce. Another sister can't find Mr. Right, although not from lack of effort. His brother is an ex-con trying to connect with his estranged son. His buddies who returned from the war have had their share of struggles, too.

Riding herd on this rag-tag group is Jesse's mother, Alicia Rodriguez. She alone has not lost faith and despite her fragile health and lack of money, she is determined to make the long trek to Washington to see the Wall.

I look forward to many, many more books from Stella Pope Durate. She's got all the skills necessary to teach us about quality writing and to entertain us for years to come.

    Enjoy.

    4 out of 5 stars Well-Done Debut Novel.......2004-02-06

Stella Pope Duarte's is an excellent novel about the long-lasting effects of the Vietnam war on an Arizona family and how they finally come to face some of the devastation. The novel is narrated by Teresa, whose older brother Jesse, was killed in 1968. Thirty years later, her mother hears Jesse's voice calling to her and she ultimately decides that she must go to the Vietnam War Memorial Wall in Washington. The trip and the events leading up to it are difficult, bringing up painful memories of Jesse and their own lives before and after his death. The trip and what they find when they get there will change their lives completely. Let Their Spririts Dance is a satisfying, moving read.

    5 out of 5 stars profoundly moving!.......2003-10-19

Jesse A. Ramirez was killed in action in Viet Nam on June 7, 1968. His mother & sister have learnt to live with their grief.

Until that Christmas when Senora Ramirez hears her son's voice. When a letter arrives soon after explaining how the military had made a mistake & now owes the family some serious money, the mourning matriarch becomes inspired. She herds her surviving children & theirs into a convoy of autos, to drive from Pheonix so she can touch her son's name upon the Vietnam Memorial Wall, & know some peace.

It is Teresa, the adult sister to whom Jesse often wrote, who tells the story, taking us into her Mexica past where a holy man gives healing & ancient spirits dwell. Where fathers & husbands wander from their marriages. Where sisters squabble & children grow up in the raza barrios of Arizona. Where honor is thwarted, bureaucrats bicker & clues are strewn like petals from a passion flower.

As the family sets out into the sunrise, Teresa's nephew creates a website & America joins them on their pilgrimage, gathering up Jesse's army buddies, attracting the attention of the military. & then someone from Little Saigon in California makes contact, & Jesse's spirit finally comes home.

RebeccasReads recommends LET THEIR SPIRITS DANCE as profoundly emotional, deeply spiritual & intensely rewarding.

    5 out of 5 stars Pure Beauty.......2002-10-05

Stella Pope Duarte tells her tale of love, hope, betrayal and tragedy with pure beauty. Her phrasing spoke to my heart, and I became alive in her story. Particularly for people who have memories of the Vietnam War, but also for those who want to gain an understanding of domestic issues at the time, this book will rock your soul. It's a quiet book, but by no means a small one. I hope it will flush your soul with beauty as it did mine.

      Book Description

On May 9, 1990, a bottle of Jack Daniels, a ring with letter, a Purple Heart and Bronze Star, a baseball, a photo album, an ace of spades, and a pie were some of the objects left at the Vietnam Veterans War Memorial. For Kristin Hass, this eclectic sampling represents an attempt by ordinary Americans to come to terms with a multitude of unnamed losses as well as to take part in the ongoing debate of how this war should be remembered. Hass explores the restless memory of the Vietnam War and an American public still grappling with its commemoration. In doing so it considers the ways Americans have struggled to renegotiate the meanings of national identity, patriotism, community, and the place of the soldier, in the aftermath of a war that ruptured the ways in which all of these things have been traditionally defined. Hass contextualizes her study of this phenomenon within the history of American funerary traditions (in particular non-Anglo traditions in which material offerings are common), the history of war memorials, and the changing symbolic meaning of war. Her evocative analysis of the site itself illustrates and enriches her larger theses regarding the creation of public memory and the problem of remembering war and the resulting causalities--in this case not only 58,000 soldiers, but also conceptions of masculinity, patriotism, and working-class pride and idealism.

1 out of 5 stars Carried to the Wall, by Kristin Ann Hass.......2004-01-11

This book is tripe. I was forced to read it for a college class, and am disappointed by the lack of substance in the book. While it claims to be about tributes to fallen soldiers in Vietnam, it spends a substantial portion of the time discussing battle monuments of the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, along with an extended discussion of the dedication of the Gettysburg battlegrounds. It looks too far into many of the objects left, such as the bike tube and nursing pads. Frankly, I'm ashamed to be associated with the same instution as this woman. Don't read it if you don't have to.

4 out of 5 stars very emotional, could use some deeper probing.......1999-11-25

i read this book for a class i was taking in college. some of the lists and letters haas reproduced made me cry...most books that people read in college don't make people cry. haas' main (and one of her only) shortcomings was her apple pie, americana approach to what people left. many latino-americans and african-americans fought in vietnam and the material and social analysis is, at times, very white bread. very good overall. moving and interesting.
