Its case studies, spanning the Neolithic through the Iron Age, are drawn from all the Mediterranean 's major lands, coasts, and islands. Written by fourteen of the leading archaeologists in the field, The Archaeology of Mediterranean Prehistory presents diverse theoretical approaches that enable students as well as other archaeologists to see the benefits of multivocality. The chapters look beyond Mediterranean diversity toward common links based on social interaction and geography. 2 out of 5 stars Not for the layman.......2007-05-09

This volume is a scholarly work and not intended for the layman. I was looking for a general history-type book, but you would probably need a degree in ancient history to get much out of this collection of essays. If you do have this type of education, it's probably a great book, but it was not meaningful to me.

    Book Description

This is the long awaited and substantially revised edition of Burl's first and highly acclaimed book for Yale, The Stone Circles of the British Isles,( 1976 cloth sales 8400, pb 1979 30* sales 10,000.) It comprises a complete and detailed overview of the prehistoric stone circles of Britain and Ireland and also, for the first time, their French counterparts, the cromlechs of Brittany. Taking into account the crucial research and discoveries which have taken place over the last twenty years, Burl reassesses amongst others the haunting circle at Callanish in Scotland as well as the world-famous Stonehenge, calling into question its dates, phases, astronomy, builders and above all its purpose.

Just what it says on the box - an excellent reference, whether planning your trip or on the road. Complete with location maps and National Grid references.

5 out of 5 stars a great work made better.......2004-11-28

Aubrey Burl's previous works were showing a wee bit of dating. As carbon dating become more accurate, you are seeing these ancient rings grow older in age instead of younger as they anticipated. While Burl's previous works were amazing, this long awaited "update" of this information, as well as addition information on more recent excavations make this is must. Yes, it expensive. But it's worth every penny. There are new insight in the the purpose of the rings of stone, a new interpretation of Calanais (sorry, as a Scot I refuse to call it Callanish!) and Stonehenge

The beautiful book is loaded with hundreds of photos, explores the ancestry, methods of construction and why they were abandoned after thousands of years of use.

Marvelous work made even better by bringing the information up to date.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Scholarship, Fine Writing.......2003-02-12

I am not accustomed to purchasing so expensive and specialized a book, but in the early autumn of 1979, I had the privilege of working on a Scottish dig run by Dr. Burl, and I have long admired his scholarship and dedication---and this revision is, simply put, GREAT! The depth of information is astounding, and I found the the presentation engrossing, the subject fascinating, and the style quite readable---certainly NOT only for students or devotees of archaeology. I can't recommend this one highly enough---it may seem like something of an indulgence for your personal library, but it's worth every penny. Alas, the book is far to heavy to carry about in one's luggage, but I've already marked at least two dozen sites that I want to visit the next time I cross the Atlantic. In the meantime, settle back in a comfortable chair and get ready to cast your mind back a couple of millenia...

5 out of 5 stars An essential resource.......2001-07-07

I recently returned from a vacation over in Ireland/Scotland/Wales where for 4 weeks I and 2 of my friends researched and visited stone circles throughout the Isles. Aubrey Burl definitely has written an essential resource you should pick up if you have the intentions of going to see them. He touches on a great number of "out of the way" stone circles not widely known in areas and gives precise directions on how to get to them. It is almost like a treasure hunt, you never knwo what is around the corner in Aubrey's book! A definite must get for the stone circle enthusiast. Don't even think about putting this book down. Get a map, get this book, and go hunting for these great spiritual centers.

    4 out of 5 stars The BEST learning/referance peice I have....thats about it.......2000-12-17

This is truly by nature a great reference book. This 400 pager is most certainly not a light read. It is the kind of book that should accompany the libuary of a person whom needs a truly great source material peice, and point of complete infomation. This book is full of references to sites and works of other peoples and times. In his true old fasion and nature, Dr. Burl make many comments, not only on current data and modern ideas, but also speaks and illustrates alot of past records of the 17 and 18 hundreds. However, this is in no way a book on the history of studies, but realy is a truly up to date compilation of material, material that stretches far and wide into many disciplines. This book should though be aprouched by one that does already know and understand a little (if not a great deal) on stone circles. A great addition of the 'Die hard', but the new people may get a bit lost. For the writter likes to wander just a little, and makes asumpsions that the reader knows just what site he is talking about and in what era of neolithic/bronze age is in question. This book is realy for the people whom want to realy expand their material in this field. I would say "expand their knowladge", but this not only greatly does so, but also offers the access to the masses of referance and source notes that one could follow up on ones self.

However, The reason that I give this a 4 star, and not a 5, is that there are 'some' problems with it, which do not 'quite' make it PERFECT. Because of the masses of refering that Dr.Burl makes to all his material, the trend and flow of the text makes this at times an un-smooth read. (if there was such a word) Because this book is structured by area, and not by era, (which is probebly the easiest way to understand the Archaeology of stone circles). What would be a great help, is drawings, Archaeo plans, or some form of diagrams of the shapes he trys to discribe. Plan illistrations of the stone circles would help a great deal in relaying the infomation as intended. not here folks. I think that it is best to use this as a referance book, and not as a smooth read. This in fact is a very positive and greatly admired notion, one that I like in this book. Another great problem is one of punctuation. I know that my spelling is problematic, but the continues lack of a comma in this work often makes it VERY difficalt to understand what the exact message is, if one was trying to read with a smooth flow, and so I at times might need to spend a long time on just one page. I have realy liked reading this book, and leared a hell of alot from its text that does in fact go very well. Just be warned that a most perfect knowladge of local name places of every corner of britain is needed to follow him, and therefore, quite a bit of wandering and un-needed refering sometimes clouds over the general message. However, I do realy love this book. I think it is a most exelent 'back-bone' to one's serious study of this subject. Most deffinetly a must for the 'heavies' amongest us, a little warning to the un-propeared and the 'just learning'. A most complete, in all ways, standed and top notch peice of material. I feal that it is prehaps the collection pot of the cream of his life work. It certainly is my favorate on my shelf.

      Book Description

This book is a comprehensive panorama of the two periods of Cypriote archaeology-the Late Bronze Age (ca. 1600-1150 B.C.) and the Geometric and Archaic periods (ca. 1050-500 B.C.)--that have been in the spotlight as a result of the renewed interest in the study of Phoenician civilization and
the Phoenician expansion to the west, in which Cyprus played a leading role. The periods covered in this book are of supreme importance in the development of the ancient civilization of Cyprus, and special attention is paid to the interconnections in the Mediterranean in order to explain the
phenomena of Cypriote culture. An extensive and up-to-date bibliography is included.

This study of archaeo-astronomy looks at more than 2,500 communal tombs and sanctuaries from around the Mediterranean. After a brief discussion of Hoskin's aims and the methodology for his fieldwork, individual chapters focus on evidence from particular regions: Malta, Gozo, the Balearics, Iberia, southern France, Corsica and Sardinia, Sicily and Pantelleria, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. Although there is no over-riding explanation that ties these sites and their orientations together, tentative interpretations are made throughout.

Ritual monuments are among the most remarkable and enduring aspects of prehistory, and form the focus of constant study and reinterpretation. The authors concentrate on monumental remains (stone circles, passage graves, timber circles, palisaded sites and henge monuments) and on ceremonial aspects of prehistoric manufacture and trade in order to account for the ritual value of artifacts. They also consider prehistoric astronomy, the Celtic ritual calendar and the orientation of stone age monuments in relation to lunar or solar observations.

                  Book Description

The NIGERIA-BIAFRA war started in mid 1967 when a tiny region of Nigeria seceded from Nigeria to become Biafra. With the complete support of the British government, Nigeria instituted a very powerful and effective blockade on Biafra. The only communication that Biafra had with the rest of the world was through the RED CROSS and CARITAS relief flights that were flown into Biafra at nights under heavy attacks from Nigerian forces. Some of the planes were shot down. With no powerful nation backing Biafra, coupled with the blockade and the consequent lack of food and medicine, surviving in Biafra became a matter of improvisements for both Biafran forces and citizens. In an area that was replete with diseases like malaria, typhoid and kwashiorkor, this book explains how the Biafran citizens were able to survive for almost three years until Biafra was defeated in January 1970.

                  Customer Reviews:

                  5 out of 5 stars A must-read book on surviving in Biafra.......2007-05-07

Chief Jim Ojiaku has written a fantastic and excellent expose' of the events of the Nigerian civil war from the home perspective. The rendition of his experiences, his free style of writing, enabled him to compress a large volume of facts with eloquence and details, thus, reminding the reader about why 'war is raw'. Chief Ojiaku wrote from the heart--a testament of the originality that would be a point of reference for future writers, hence there were no bibliographical references. The book portrayed how a determined people (Biafrans) courageously persevered over a thirty-month bloody civil war in the face of adversity perpetrated by world super-powers who coerced the international community to look away while they helped the Federal Government of Nigeria in its failed effort to win the war in forty-eight hours, then resorted to blockade and blanket the Biafrans both by sea, air, and land and executed the blood-letting and starvation that led to an eventual surrender to peace in 1970.
Chief Ojiaku indicated that although the battle ended in the war front, the war rages on as people from the Biafran side continue to be marginalized in almost all aspects of Nigerian life--politics, university admissions, road constructions and what have you! This book showed that Chief Jim Ojiaku can successfully make use of good advice. Thanks to his brother in law--Professor Joe Akunna who sincerely advised him to put down his thoughts in black and white.
Surviving the iron curtain exemplified how Biafra was killed in a genocidal civil unrest, but the people refused to die. The planned extermination of the Biafrans from the surface of the earth--how civilians were tortured and starved, the poor state of Biafra, how ill-equipped young people joined the war to save their people, how the Biafrans used improvises to fight valiantly as the Biblical David against Goliath. Chief Uche Jim Ojiaku did not forget the benevolence of the Red Cross and other relief organizations in breaking the iron curtain despite enemy attack. Worst still was the only twenty pounds which Biafrans received from the Nigerian Government who had any bank account in Biafran banks--being the only rehabilitation received since after the war.
Chief Jim Ojiaku deliberately refused to deal with the blame game that characterizes every war. He was right to blame both sides in order to allow the reader to understand his reason for writing the book. Finally Biafra surrendered through the courage and bravery of Colonel Philip Effiong who helped to salvage the human skull that was left of Biafra--in 1970. I strongly recommend this book to all who profess to the Biafran cause-both old and young--a reminder of the indelible scar--that was Biafra.

5 out of 5 stars Surviving the iron curtain by Chief Uche Jim Ojiaku.......2007-04-23

In reading Chief Uche Jim Ojiaku's book I learned a piece of history that needs to be read by everyone and the world needs to remember the horrors of the war between Nigeria and The Republic Of Biafra and a war that tore apart a country.
He tells of one story about his brother Emmanuel who is killed at the front at the young age of 19 and the beautiful touching letter his father writes to his dead son, "An Epitath To Lt. Emmanuel Ojiaku."

This letter is heart breaking and no one would forget reading it. He writes very lovingly about his mother, father, brothers and sisters and especially about his love for his people. He brings forth in his book many beautiful photographs and diagrams on the many foods in his region and explains in great detail on each food and how they're prepared.

This book is a must read. Jim brings forth the great love he has for his people, his family and most of all his great country.

I give Chief Uche Jim Ojiaku five stars ***** for a book well written.

1 out of 5 stars The author does not have a basic understanding of botany.......2005-05-13

Why publish a book about trees written by someone who I doubt has even had a semester of botany? It saddens me to think that this book will be read by children and taken as accurate with its foggy minded understanding of trees. "Roots are the most important part of a tree." That's like saying the heart is the most important part of the body. Yes, the heart is necessary, but so are the lungs and the brain, etc... The author does not understand what she is writing about and the publishing company did not bother having a botanist to check the book. I did like a sentence on the last page "Do not tear off any bark, branches, or leaves from a tree." This is a really good basic statement for children to hear. If your children are interested in trees, I would recommend buying a different book.
