This story of a tragically injured young silversmith who ends up hip-deep in the American Revolution is inspiring, exciting, and sad. Winner of the prestigious Newbery Award in 1944, Esther Forbes's story has lasted these 50-plus years by including adventure, loss, courage, and history in a wonderfully written, very dramatic package. It's probably not great for little guys but mature 11-year-olds or older will find it a great adventure.
Book Description
Johnny Tremain, a young apprentice silversmith, is caught up in the danger and excitement of 1775 Boston, just before the Revolutionary War. But even more gripping than living through the drama of Revolutionary Boston is the important discovery Johnny makes in his own life.
Customer Reviews:
Who are these people?.......2007-09-11
It is a sad commentary that a book as long-lived, as rich and readable, and as useful as a window on life in Revolutionary America (albeit only as detailed as appropriate for a young-person's book) is trashed by "readers" (if indeed they read the same book I did) whose sub-literate spew is as empty of content as apparently their minds are.
Dishearted by the use of profanity.......2007-07-15
Although the story line was very good, I was very dishearted by the use of profanity, slang terms, and the use of gory details that just didn't need to be there. I would not let my child read this book because of it. The profanity and slang terms were not needed. If you don't have time to read the book check out these pages 5, 26, 37, 49, 70, 108, 115, 121, 128, 129, 146, 168, 193, 212, 214, 222, 235, 236, 245, 246, 278, 286, 301, & 308. I know we each view things differently so you be the judge.
Excellent for the whole family!!.......2007-07-15
A great book to read aloud to one another as a family or just read by yourself. Tells the story of one boy's life in the time of the revolution of our country. He was filled with a pride that was brought low. His character developed into someone who could go on after a tragedy and be a benefit to those around him. Nothing boring in this book and will keep you turning the pages until the end.
Get this book for your kids -- then keep it.......2007-06-08
It makes me so sad to see how many kids find this book boring. I remember reading it to death as a kid, and loving it even more when I read it to my then-11-year-old daughter (though I have to admit that I loved it more than she did). The prose is crisp and vivid, the plot incredibly exciting, and the characters leap off the page. Johnny and Rab are hot! Come to think of it, that's why I kept rereading it as a kid.
This is a book for anyone who loves to read, and maybe that's why so many kids didn't like it. From my adult perspective, I was struck by how witty and nuanced Esther Forbes' observations of life in colonial Boston were -- perhaps beyond the grasp of most kids. I came away thinking about how ambivalent most characters were about the constraints placed on their lives by the mandates of Puritan belief, yet how fundamental faith was to them. I also admired the way Forbes contrasted Johnny's two crushes, the rich and snobbish Lavinia and the honest and loyal Cilla. The scene in which Johnny finally confronts Lavinia, revealing her to be a vulnerable human being rather than a goddess -- and thus letting the air out of his crush -- is masterful.
I would categorize this book as young adult rather than children's literature. I find I really like many young adult books because they're not afraid to be about something, and they leave your head full of ideas. Of course, that's like giving your kids tofu when they want a cheeseburger. (I like tofu, too.) But Johnny Tremain is way better than tofu. Read it for your own enjoyment, and if your kids are very good, let them borrow it.
Yawn- #1 Most boring book ever.......2007-04-24
I was forced to read this book for school and literally fell asleep a few times reading it. There is no excitement or adventure in the storyline and reading it just makes you feel more drowsy with every page turn. Who wants to read about a self-centered jerk who barely gets any better throughout the course of the book? Not me! If there was a list of the worst books ever written this would remain the chart-topper for eternity!!!!!!

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Nobel Prize Winner.......2007-08-18
If you were short changed on your history education, like most of us, this is a must read. This is the kind of reading the can make the casual reader, an avid reader of histories. Most people don't know that Churchill had to write to earn a living. Along with his works on the Duke of Marlborough, The World Crisis (WWI) and his 6 volume work on WWII, this series stands out. I covers a lot of ground and leaves you wanting to read more.

Great Historical Fiction for Kids!.......2007-02-18
This book was a perfect novel to illustrate the perils of war, and the American Revolution for my fifth grade class. I used it as the middle level novel for my American Revolution literature circles. It worked extremely well, and I felt my average readers got as much out of our studies as my advanced readers who were able to read a more challenging novel. I highly recommend this book.
A Book Filled With Adventure.......2007-01-18
Tolivers secret is a book full of adventure. In this story Ellen Toliver is asked to deliver her grandfathers message. If it falls in the wronge hands it would be disastrous.Along Ellens journy she comes to close incounters with Red Coats, animals and her idenity being uncovered. This is the perfect book for people who like adventure, exitment and stunningly written books. This book made me relise alot of things about the revolutionary war. don't turn down a opportunity to read this book!!!!!

Toliver's Secret
*****
I am not a big fan of historical fiction novels, but there were a few which I enjoyed reading and Tolivers Secret was one of them. What I liked about this book was that there was always somthing going on. My favorite part of the book was when Elen found out that inorder to not let her grandfather down she had to do somthing she was not that comfortable doing. Anyway if you ever need to read a historical fiction novle, Tolivers secret is a book you will definatley a book you will enjoy. Alot of people that I know who have read this book enjoyed it . I will recomend this book to anyone exept people who like boring historical fiction novels.
Toliver's Secret.......2007-01-18
"Toliver's Secret" is a book about a young girl named Ellen Toliver, whose grandfather sprained his ankle the day he had to deliver a important message to George Washington in New Jersey. So Ellen delivered the message for her grandfather with a little encouragement.
"Toliver's Secret" is an amazing book, and if you like adventure then this is a good book for you. An example of it is when Ellen has to dress up as a boy and make it through the British lines . A different example is when she had to get out of a farm house or have her secret revealed. Like I said before, it is a great book and almost any one will like it.
Toliver's Secret Book Review.......2007-01-18
Toliver's Secret is a book that will have you at the edge of your seat! Ten-year-old Ellen Toliver (the main character) goes on many adventures in this beyond belief historical fiction book. For example,--- Ellen is asked to complete a mission for her grandfather because he is injured the day of the mission. She has to complete this mission so General Washington gets an important message that will change the war.
I give this book a five star review because of the cliffhangers at the end of each chapter that make you want to read forever. Also the great character Ellen that pulls this outstanding, adventurous, amazing, inspiring book together.- I highly recommend this book to any historical fiction lovers.
Book Description
In A Social History of Modern Art, a sweeping multivolume social history of Western art from the French Revolution to World War I, Albert Boime moves beyond the concern with style and form that has traditionally characterized the study of art history and, in the tradition of Arnold Hauser, examines art in a broad historical context. Into his wide-ranging cultural inquiry Boime incorporates not only frequently studied mainstream artists and sculptors but also neglected and lesser known artists and unattributed popular imagery. He examines popular as well as official culture, the family as well as the state, and the conditions of the poor as well as of the affluent that affected cultural practice.
This inaugural volume explores the artistic repercussions of the major political and economic events of the latter half of the eighteenth century: the Seven Years' War, the French Revolution, and the English industrial revolution. Boime examines the prerevolutionary popularity of the rococo style and the emergence of the cult of antiquity that followed the Seven Years' War. He shows how the continual experiments of Jacques-Louis David and others with neoclassical symbols and themes in the latter part of the century actively contributed to the transformation of French and English politics. Boime's analyses reveal the complex relationship of art with a wide range of contemporary attitudes and conditions—technological innovation, social and political tensions, commercial expansion, and the growth of capitalism.
"Provocative and endlessly revealing."—Christopher Knight, Los Angeles Herald Examiner
Book Description
What exactly is the basis for the Catholic Churchs belief in the role of the Pope What does the Catholic Church mean when it teaches that the Pope is Christs Vicar on earth And what does this teaching mean for Christians of other faith traditions Robert Stackpole STD addresses thoughtprovoking questions in his book St. Peter Lives in Rome which has been rereleased in this expanded and revised edition. Dr. Stackpole presents new evidence of support from the early Christian era for the papacy and even includes a timeline entitled Important Dates in the Early Story of the Petrine Primacy. Readers will be fascinated by this study that clears away misunderstandings about the papacy and clarifies its foundations in Scripture and early Church history.

A good book.......2007-09-27
If you want a well thought out, well explained and well illustrated set of isometric exercises, that is what you get in this book; in three chapters. And that is what I base my 5 star rating on.
The "selling isometric" chapters (diet, motovation, history etc) are of passing interest to this reviewer but have been reviewed enthusiactically elsewhere.
Exciting to see - .......2007-08-04
Every time I see a book by this author, I am inspired. His enthusiasm jumps right across the pages, and he 'aint too hard of the eyes either!! It's great to see the breathing component added - for me, this is very key, and kicks it up a notch.
ISOMETRIC POWER REVOLUTION.......2007-07-19
Fantastic!!!.
Another superb book from Mr Peterson.
This man is living proof that his methods not only work but work exceptionly well, if you put the lessons in this book into practice you can change the way you look and feel whilst never having to leave home.
You don't need a gym, all you need is John's books and a little self-discipline.
I highly recommend John's work they are truly outstanding.

Best workout for the time challenged.......2007-07-18
Let me preface this by saying I own two of Mr. Peterson's other books, The Miracle Seven and Pushing Yourself to Power as well as Jim Forystek's Powerflex, all of these books are excellent. IPR is no different. The book is extremely well written with a history section which is full of details. Mr. Peterson also has a great chapter on motivation. As for the exercises themselves, I have been performing the Classical Isometric exercises every other day for about three weeks now. The results have been fantastic. I trained with weights for many years, but my muscles are harder and better defined with isometrics than they ever were with weights. The program is also extremely convenient and quick. My family and I were on vacation this past week. We drove to our destination. Twice I was able to get through two thirds of the workout sitting in the passenger seat! I only had a few movements to finish up once we stopped for the night. I can do most of my routine at work at my desk. If you're always strapped for time because of work/family commitments, this is the best way to get a workout in. I love it!
Try it, learn it, it works!.......2007-06-18
Last week I was driving my daughter home from a soccer game. We were in my '83 Jeep CJ-7, a car with limited power steering capability, so each turn was brief workout in itself. At one point while making a turn, she reached out and grabbed my bicep and said, "how did you get that?" I smiled and told her, "Isometrics". I am commercial airline pilot, husband and father of four. My days are typically filled with tough commutes, strange hotels, weather delays, time zone changes, soccer games, swim meets, piano lessons, scout meetings, home repair, etc, etc. In short, I have no set time that I can consistently set aside for training and most times I have no time at all. Therefore, I take my workouts as time presents itself to me. This book gave me the insight I needed to form my own simple and effective workouts that I can do anytime, anywhere with no equipment and no set time commitment. I simply do not have time for a gym or anything of that nature and I'm positive that I am not the only one. I exercise for many reasons, mainly to preserve my health and longevity, in short, I want to see my grandchildren! But I also need to protect my pilots license, which hinges upon a biannual physical. There are economic reasons as well, I don't want to have to purchase a new (larger) pair of pants every 6 months or so! The least of my reasons for exercising is vanity. Yes, I want to look good and fit, but I don't crave recognition for it. BUT, when my 7 year old daughter reached out and admired my arm development it was like winning an award or contest! For me that is all the recognition I will ever need. Most people have been conditioned to believe that you have to join a gym and lift weights to stay fit. It is simply not true. Those familiar with yoga teacher Baron Baptiste know that he trains many high-profile celebrities and athletes. Yet his message is the antithesis of the American obsession with wealth and fame. For Baptiste, personal transformation is about facing the abyss of our internal emptiness and recognizing all the ways we seek to fill the void with money, status and material possessions. Ultimately, this program offers readers a kick-butt chance to get started on a steadier and more lasting, internal form of fulfillment. "In the end yoga is not a magic cure-all, but the way challenges our bodies moves our stuck energy, clears our mind, and inspires us to seek and live in truth can be a catalyst for amazing spiritual growth," he writes. "Ultimately the yoga program found in the book is about developing a soulful perspective to the question that I hear nearly every day in my classroom: 'How did I get into this state, and how can I get out?'"
Baptiste divides his program into a six-week system. Each week focuses on a theme for transformation. For instance, Week One starts with the theme of "Presence." Baptiste suggests readers start with a daily 20-minute yoga practice. (His asanas are all gentle, but the mechanics may be challenging for readers completely new to yoga, although the pictures and lengthy captions will help.) He also suggests a beginning "balancing diet" (based on Ayurveda principles), and thematic meditations, which include a list of "excavation questions." One could argue that this book is even better than going on a 40-day retreat at one of Baptiste's yoga centers. The program is designed to be integrated into your life as you live it. Readers do the yoga and prepare the food in their homes, and contemplate the principles for enlightenment within the routines of daily life. In this way it has the potential to be a lasting and well integrated transformation. --Gail Hudson

Great book for specific audiences, some shortcomings for others.......2006-12-17
I have to admit I have an ambiguous relationship to this book. I admire the author's credentials and experience and the contents are organized around a 40 day plan which is a great idea. However, I think there are some important gaps if this is your only reference.
First, the best part about this book is progressing and deepening your commitment a day at a time. This is a great way to change your life and the ideas presented are useful and cover physical, mental and spiritual practices. The book is also well-illustrated and provides basic instruction on the most important asanas.
What I feel is missing here is more depth on the appropriate and safe ways to practice the asanas. If one is attending regular yoga classes or has a teacher, then I think the instructions are adequate. However, I think it's particulary important for beginners to focus on the details and if you purchase this book I would get something to supplement it such as Judith Lasater's "The 30 Essential Yoga Poses" and/or "Dancing the Body of Light" by Dona Holleman. If you have a bad back or neck, then it might also be worth purchasing "Back Care Basics" by Mary Pullig Schatz. (The Pilates back book might also be helpful, but it is not as comprehensive and it's not a yoga book per se.)
Some other aspects of this book that I like is the broad scope that covers philosophy, diet, meditation and routines that build up over time. It also talks about dealing with resistance and has a very motivational tone. While this approach may be a bit aggressive for non-athletes or people who are casually acquainted with yoga, the challenge will appeal to more serious students and atheletes who want to move forward quickly and are already in relatively good shape. These people are also less likely to get injured along the way.
In truth, I would rate the book a 3.5. However, there is no 3.5 category. While there are many things I like here, I don't see it as a standalone book. The most interesting thing about it for me was the attempt to integrate lots of elements into a way of life. However, I think there wasn't enough space to completely tackle this task. The effort to do this is admirable and there is certainly a lot one can learn, but please pick up one or more of the other books above before you starting combining bending and twisting or other physical moves that put high strain on fragile joints as well as the back.
Good guy, Bad book.......2006-02-03
My main beef with this book is how quickly it goes... For example, in the first week you perform Paschimottanasana (seated forward bend), which is crazy! In Iyengar's Light on Yoga, this is not presented until week 14; the reason is that it requires A LOT of preparation, or else (and I write this from experience) you can really mess up your lower back if you do it improperly. Secondly, all the pranayama is done while doing the asanas instead of separately; I'm sure Patanjali is rolling in his urn. Thirdly, it mentions (forgive me if I'm wrong, I've shelved this book a long time ago) nothing of the Yamas and Niyamas, which is a prerequisite for asanas. And last but not least, the meditation portion of this book is just all wrong, and I'll leave it at that... Leave this book, go with Iyengar's Light on Yoga. It's more difficult and moves at a snail's pace, but it's as authentic as you can get without a guru.
I hated the book but I put two stars... If you go to Baron Baptiste's website, and email one of his employees a quesion, they answer it, gratis. Don't get me wrong, from what I've seen, Baptiste seems a little money hungry, but the world is not yet perfect. Namaste.
EXCELLENT SUPPLEMENT TO "JOURNEY INTO POWER" .......2005-04-21
If you found "Journey Into Power" (Baron's first book), to be a life changing book (I also have it on CD and listen to it all the time for inspiration), Baron has produced another excellent guide along the path of his approach to yoga.
While I must admit that I haven't followed the plan on a week by week basis, I have already been doing yoga daily for 8 years and have a very well established practice which I vary daily (I have over 70 videos of every imaginable style of yoga).
A big part of the reason that I purchased this book is because I was curious to see how he broke the sequences down for the various weeks. I like the way he lays out the routines in the series of photographs in the back section of the book, very useful!
The excavation questions in the meditation sections are useful as well as the principles he outlines in the first part of the book. The last section is also very useful in terms of applying yoga to one's whole life and not just what happens on the mat.
I did find Baron's nutritional principles ("The Cleansing Diet" and "The Detoxifying Cleanse") a bit easier to follow in "Journey Into Power", but there was still much interesting "food for thought" in this new book :) Baron's approach to eating is not a "diet" in the way the word is typically used, it's just really an approach to eating vital, living and unprocessed foods along with the psychology behind your relationship to food.
As far as practicing Yoga, in general I feel it's much easier to work with his Video/DVD programs than any book, even those as excellent as Baron's. His video/dvd programs are the best I've seen if you want a real "physical" yet sensible practice. For me the information on the poses in the books are excellent for getting detailed information on the specific elements of the poses which can be hard to get and absorb in the flow of a class (be it live or recorded).
In particular I'd recommend his "Live" programs, such as "Core Power" and "Unlocking Athletic Power" which are shorter practices. Plus "Soul Of Strength" which is a longer program (and it follows the "Journey Into Power" sequence almost exactly, just a few differences.
His PBS special which you can buy called "Transform Your Life" is a documentary of sorts which shows 40 students on one of Baron's weeklong "Bootcamps" and it is very inspirational, it also has a fabulous 20 minute Power Yoga Basics routine which is worth the price of the tape alone, I use it all the time for a short but effective practice.
Also, you may want to check out Baron's "Bootcamp Box" which has two CD's (not DVD's, but the CD's are VERY easy to follow) and flash cards which contain three 20 minute practices (Vinayas Flow/Hip Flow/Core Flow) and a long 75 minute practice. It also has a small booklet that helps you structure a home "Bootcamp" weekend practice.
Since writing this review I have purchased and used his "Journey Into Power" Video/DVD programs and they are excellent. The level one is a wonderful introduction to Baron's approach, it certainly seems that it would be challenging for someone new to vinyasa flow, and even for an experienced person it is a nice shorter and less intense practice than the level 2 which is considerably more intense. The level 2 program follows the sequence of Baron's book "Journey Into Power" quite closely (though it is very close to "Soul Of Strength" so if you have that you may not need "Journey Into Power" Level 2)
Namaste
All the Rudiments Are Here........2004-09-23
Baron Baptiste is the son of two of America's yoga pioneers, and he trained in all of the major traditions before selecting the best from all of them to create Baptiste Power Yoga. In this book he explains that within 40 days, following a specific program readers can shift to a whole new way of living and being.
For the forty day time period, there are specific instructions covering exercises, diet, and meditations. Each week within the forty days has a specific theme within the overall goal of changing your life. Of course you have to put yourself into the program, and what you get out will depend on your input. The rudiments of a new lifestyle are here. It is now up to you.
40 days to transformation.......2004-05-13
This book is very well written and I've not been able to put it down since I got it. I'm in the middle of my fourth week of the 40 day program and things have been unbelievably smooth. The practices have awesome flow from one to the next. The progressions are so natural. When I saw "40 days to transformation," I conjured up some grueling process, something I'd force myself to get through and then move on. But around the end of the first week I realized these 40 days are transforming my life. The physical changes have been powerful, I've dropped weight, stress and a lot of tension. The lessons I've learned about myself are permanent. They'll be with me always!

Book Description
This is the first indepth study of an architect and landscape designer forgotten in scholarship as a result of the precarious historical circumstances in which he pursued his career. Forced to flee France during the Revolution, Ramée spent his life as a nomad, working in Belgium, Saxony, Hamburg, Denmark, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, and the United States. Staying only briefly in most places, he was often forgotten, and his works subsequently attributed to other architects. In this reconstruction of his career, Paul Turner demonstrates how Ramée, in the process of his travels, transmitted innovations from country to country and created a unique synthesis of the design currents of the Neo-Classical Age. This study, the result of a decade of research, brings to light not only Raméeâs lost works but also his relationships with diverse clients, including aristocrats, merchants, poets, educators, American land developers and others.

Book Description
Once there were four lads . . . John (Hancock), Paul (Revere), George (Washington), and Ben (Franklin). Oh yes, there was also Tom (Jefferson), but he was always off doing his own thing, so people usually forgot about him.The lads were always getting into trouble for one reason or another. Johns handwriting was bigger than all the other kids.Pauls ear-splitting job as a bell-ringer made him speak a LITTLE TOO LOUDLY all the time. George was too honest for his own good.Ben was always talking in proverbs. . . . And Tom, well, he was just plain independent. But somehow, these five lads grew up to start a revolutionone that would change this country forever.Legendary artist Lane Smith has created a totally fresh and funny way to learn about the Founding Fathers of our countrywith just a few liberties mixed in.
Customer Reviews:
A Fabulous Book about the Fab Four (Founding Fathers that is).......2007-08-19
First of all, this book is not intended for grades K-3 as Booklist suggests. To appreciate its full humor, you must know some of your U.S. history, otherwise you will be confused. Kids & adults (ages 9-99) will all find something appealing within these hallowed pages, as Smith combines real and fictional facts about Hancock, Revere, Washington and Franklin (oh yes, and how could we forget about Jefferson, the independent lad?) Most importantly, it will show kids that our Founding Fathers were REAL people, and were once kids themselves. I'm not sure what is funnier - the witty text or the hilarious illustrations. For example, there's poor Paul (Revere) who suffers a hearing loss from all that bell-ringing. This causes him to shout all the time at people, even at the most inappropriate times (such as loudly proclaiming at work that they do have EXTRA-LARGE UNDERWEAR for one very embarrassed female customer). Then there was Ben (Franklin), a clever lad, who "considered it his duty to provide frequent, free advice", much to the chagrin of the townsfolk. At the end of the book, the Fab Five are shown as we see them hanging on our school walls and there are some actual facts about them. Also I loved the True & False Quiz at the end. Thankfully, Smith provides the answers. All in all, a delightful book to shed some humor on a usually dry subject.
Hilarious history for your kids!.......2007-07-31
My son, who is 8, clamors over and over for this one. His laugh is so loud and genuine, I read it just to hear him. A brilliant mix of fact and fiction, very clearly separated with huge giggles in between. The story is quick and lively and the real facts at the end written in a way that still holds a yound child's interest. Even the true or false section makes us laugh! I cannot recommend this one highly enough.
Famous Founding Fathers in a funny, creative book.......2007-05-29
A great, illustrative way to learn about history and a few of our Founding Fathers. Enjoy a few clever plays on words, and creative explanations for why these men became leaders in U.S. history. A current favorite among my 5-year olds.
John, Paul, George and Ben.......2007-05-02
I don't ususally write reviews, but this book was so good that I had too. My 7 year-old loves it and asks to read it over and over. It's a great book to introduce history to our children, so light and so funny. I only wish the author would write more history books likes this for the kids!
Paul Revere and the Raiders.......2007-03-06
Lane Smith is an illustrator who has collaborated most famously with Jon Scieszka ("The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs!" "The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales," the Time Warp Trio series), as well as illustrating books by Roald Dahl, Dr. Seuss and Jack Prelutsky. Here, he gets by without a little help from his friends, penning and picturing the Four of the Fab Founding Fathers: John (Hancock), Paul (Revere), George (Washington), and Ben (Franklin). Too bad Ben wasn't famous for his decorative rings.
The Beatles need NOT be familiar to your young reader or audience. IN fact , despite the obvious titular reference, Liverpudlian references are not the M.O. here. Sure, there's a great parody of the "Abbey Road" cover, showing the foursome crossing a street. In addition, they have cultish, slightly outrageous, and often independent, irrepresible personalities, and Lane Smith quotes briefly from the Beatles "Revolution." THere's also a fifth "Beatle," Thomas Jefferson, quieter and more studious than the rest (perhaps even moreprecocious than the rest), but certainly a heavier hitter than Ringo's predecessor, Pete Best. So, your kid(s) are going to like this book, maybe love this book, whether or not they've ever heard of "Strawberry Fields."
Lane Smith is as inspired a writer as he is an illustrator. Other reviews mention the jokes--I'll just summarize: THey're hilarious! Smith takes some well-known factoid from their adult years (Ben's never-ending quips, Paul's LOUD, irreverent comments, etc.,) and shows these behaviors in their childhood years, often to the annoyance of peers, teachers, and other adults. THe old chestnut about George's honesty over that cherry tree is a good example of the liberties and outrageous fun of Smith's skewed biograhies:
George's father exclaims to his son,"you have paid me for it (the hacked cherry tree) a thousand-fold with your honesty." "Really!" said George. "In that case...when I tell you I've taken out the apple orchard, leveled the barn, and made kiddling of your carriage, you'll be a wealthy, wealthy man." TO balance out the silly stuff, Smith includes a few pages on the adult accomplisments of the five men, as well as a clvere section that separates fact from fiction about each of them. It's a brilliant concept; these are iconic American figures, each with their own mythology. I see no harm in continuing and extending those myths, especially when Smith incudes some factual material for those interested.
Kudos, as well, for the illustrations, too. They look period-authentic in composition and style. The pictures look like period pieces with their age, cracked backgrounds, and Smith also uses typeface of the era. THe veneer of authenticity and Smith's talent for mimickry produce some beautiful prictures, but they're still full of a humorous pictorial style that's keenly attuned to kids. This 2006 book is an early entry in my list of top kids' books I've reviewed in 2007.
Book Description
In The New Golden Age, bestselling author and economist Ravi Batra identifies the roadblocks to economic prosperity--and what we need to do to overcome them. Bringing the same insight and expertise that made books like The Downfall of Capitalism and Communism international bestsellers, Batra takes on falling minimum wages, corporate scandals, rocketing oil prices, and many of the other crises facing the world economy. He also offers an expansive, optimistic vision of how the international community can address them and bring about something historically unprecedented: true global economic prosperity.
Customer Reviews:
The New Golden Age: The Coming Revolution against Political Corruption and Economic Chaos.......2007-08-08
An exceptional economics book that tells the truth directly and in simple and completely understandable terms. Scuttles the Media and Political hype and presents what is needful and workable toward economic democracy that is now being submerged be the Global "Free Market" lies, myths and swindles.
Should be required reading for every truly patriotic citizen.
Stays on message - still the most potent critic of Capitalism .......2007-06-16
Ravi Batra is still at it, almost three decades since he penned the classic "The Downfall of Capitalism and Communism: A New Study of History". We have come a long way with this author since then and never been bored. Batra's thesis is that we have entered the era of financial capitalism, the last stage of the Age of Acquisitors, where an increasingly uneven distribution of wealth feeds into increasing financial leverage and speculation, until the system can't handle it anymore and collapses. Following the collapse is financial destitution of many and social chaos. Such an outcome is still the most potent form of criticism of Capitalism. If Batra is at some point proved right that
a) the Great Depression of the 1930s was no fluke and
b) that innovations and safeguards to our financial system adopted since then cannot prevent another meltdown,
then that is a major an indictment of our form of social organization and, ultimately, our way of life.
At the heart of Batra's writings are the ideas of his mentor P.R. Sarkar. Batra has done more than anyone to publicize the message of this giant of modern day Indian thought in the West. This book is yet another installation into that body of work. While the message may no longer be as novel or fresh as it was in the 1980s, his work now builds on three decades of experience, including a multitude of accurate predictions (although the most important one has so far been a spectacular failure - the Great Depression of 1990!). He is now more circumspect about such things, including the adoption of a fiat monetary system in the 1970s and how monetary policy has been successfully used to forestall a major crash. In one sense he is quite correct, our monetary and financial system is an ongoing social experiment. Batra's work is, if anything, a reminder that we take a lot of things for granted. It is healthy to consider the alternatives, such as if the systemic stability were to give way to catastrophe. Central banks all over the world now devote considerable resources into researching this question and government surveillance of the financial market is now commonplace with stock markets all over the world soaring. Interestingly, all of that, albeit important, is not really the key focus of his work. As the name of his new book suggests, it is the glorious new dawn of a world based on the sentient philosophy of his mentor that is his main message.
Time will tell if Batra and the ideas he promotes are the real deal. So far, he has yet to prove the worth of these ideas with his major prediction. However, he has offered many novel insights into how modern capitalism works. For instance, in the 1980s he was one of the first to talk about how the financial sector was becoming the key to social developments in the West. Today, we take such insights for granted. Overall, the ideas he is describing are more than worthy of our careful consideration. Let us also not forget that he made a prediction in the book mentioned above in 1978 that Communism would fall. It did. As is the norm for him, the book is exceedingly well written and the message as fascinating as ever. Batra tends to be a few steps ahead of the rest of us, even if it sometimes looks as if he going down the wrong path. Even if he has made a big misstep, in my opinion, he is still headed in the right direction. The ideas are serious and profound and also filled with hope. The book is highly recommended for the intellectually curious or those scoping about for a more meaningful approach to life than what the real world has on offer in the early 21th century.
A Call to Arms!!!.......2007-03-25
In this book, Batra expains how the economic chaos and political corruption will continue to escalate and worsen over the next few years until the working class eventually rise up like warriors against the acquisitor class (capitalist - Russ Winter calls them the "pigmen") who have infiltrated all aspects of our government, the press, and our society at large. This uprising will dawn a new golden era of prosperity for the masses and the working class. A move away from "trickle down" economics where indebtedness of the masses for the fortitude of the richest has resulted in an increasingly unstable bubble-led economy with resultant record trade imbalances that leaves us (as a nation and society) in a precarious and vulnerable situation.
