Book Description

Wellington's celebrated Peninsular army played a vital role in the defeat of Napoleon's French forces in Portugal and Spain. It is one of the most famous armies in military history. Yet the last large-scale examination of its structure and operation was written by Sir Charles Oman as long ago as 1913, and since then so much new material has come to light that a fresh account is long overdue.

This important new study, which uses Oman's pioneering work as a foundation, provides a wide-ranging survey of the latest research into the subject, and it is a major contribution to the history of the Peninsular War.

1 out of 5 stars Inside Wellington's Peninsular army.......2007-10-11

I was looking for a book that would finally offer me insight in the quality of the men and officers of this army, optimistic from the fact that Rory Muir is one of the authors.
Instead I found so much paper and no opinion. To describe a general by listing his qualifications, tells me nothing. Same for the units.
Disappointing book for me.

5 out of 5 stars One for the Dedicated Student.......2007-06-23

The exploits of Wellington's Peninsular Army in Portugal, Spain, and Southern France during 1808-1814 are justly famous and have been rather thoroughly explored by a variety of scholars and popular historians. It is therefore a genuine pleasure when a book advertising new research and new insights actually lives up to its billing.

"Inside Wellington's Peninsular Army 1808-1814" contains seven essays and a special appendix, authored by four writers, the most prominent being Rory Muir. Muir provides the introductory essay, a well-written summary of the importance of Wellington and his army to the conflict. Ron McGuigan explores the ad hoc nature of the "disposable force" that became the British core of Wellington's army in the second essay. In the third essay, Robert Burnham provides a brief description of intelligence-gathering activities by selected British officers.

The fourth essay, by Howie Muir, may be the most interesting to students of the Peninsular War. In it, Muir captures how the seniority of British units and of commanders drove an habitual spatial placement of units on the battlefield, literally their "order of battle." This habitual arrangement, nowadays used only for formal parades, once served as the standard operating procedure for ordering units in and out of combat. In an army guided by voice command and couriers, this procedure imparted necessary predictability, and its use provides insight into how several battle unfolded during the Peninsular War. Muir uses Talavera, Albuera, and Toulouse as case studies. As an example, Muir's finding offers a plausible explanation for why Major General Stewart's 2nd Divisions took an hour to reposition itself at Albuera over an distance that represented perhaps a 15 minute walk. Muir's essay provides insight into the perogatives of rank and Wellington's requirement to carefully manage the placement of senior officers. Ron McGuigan's follow-on essay notes the general officers who served with Wellington and the units with which they were habitually associated.

Robert Burnham describes the British Army's challenges in keeping the ranks of Wellington's army filled and its experimentation with various more or less innovative solutions. This particular essay has some relevance for an American Army striving to keep sufficient forces deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. In a separate essay, Burnham notes the remarkable bridging work done by British engineers in a theater of war with few permanent bridges and limited building materials. A closing appendix lists the memoirs associated with the British units that served in Portugal and Spain.

This book is very highly recommended to the dedicated student of the British Army and its participation in the Peninsular War. This volume is not obviously meant to be popular history for the general reader, who may find the material less interesting and difficult to follow.

5 out of 5 stars A One of a Kind Book.......2007-06-18

If you're like me, you've gotten tired of the Napoleonic books that simply rehash the same subjects, regurgitating the same information from the same sources. You've probably felt that pang of disappointment and wasted money when you've ordered a `new' book on say Waterloo, only to find the very same accounts with the very same pictures from another publisher. If so, I know you will find INSIDE WELLINGTON'S ARMY an exciting and refreshing change. If you are longing for new research, a deeper understanding, and broader perspectives on the Peninsular war, then INSIDE WELLINGTON'S ARMY is the answer.

INSIDE WELLINTON'S ARMY is a unique series of studies, providing research on important and misunderstood topics not found anywhere else. The book's stated purpose is to supplement existing histories, particularly Oman's 1913 study "Wellington's Army 1809-1814", which offered a distillation of much what Oman had learned while researching his multi-volume work on the history of the Peninsular war. The authors have succeeded admirably.

The seven substantial chapters cover such topics as the origin of Wellington's army in the Peninsula. By the end of the war, Wellington commanded the largest British army in history, for far longer than any other expeditionary force. The how's and why's of its creation explains a great deal, not only why Wellington could win so consistently with the army, but also British military thinking and organization for the rest of the Nineteenth Century.

The Chapters on British feats of military bridging and how the British kept their units up to strength provide detailed information, tables and period pictures seen nowhere else. The variety and number of `firsts' in bridging carried out by the British is amazing, as are the numerous original pictures and engineering diagrams provided with the text. Anyone who has read about the Peninsular war knows how important bridging was for the Spanish campaigns, but this is the first it has been written about in any detail, let alone the lush data provided in the book.

The chapter on the British Army's `order of battle', is equally fascinating, a must for anyone interested in the military practices of the day. This study of the system used to organize an army in a battle line during the Peninsular war reveals how the place of honor and seniority provided the structure for movement, battle, morale and discipline. This often misunderstood set of practices dictated who would command what units where in the battle line, providing a set of structural tools for an army commander in creating a winning set of battle tactics. This system of custom and is examined in detail, it's practicality and uses in the field, as well as the continuity in operations that the Peninsular army shared with those armies that went before and after it. And of course, the same methods used for a `customary battle-array' by the British were very similar to those of other nations during the Napoleonic wars.

The authors have spent years of study to produce their individual chapters, offering a depth of knowledge and wealth of information found in few other works on the British army and the Peninsular war. If you are looking for some more than `the same-old, same-old' in Napoleonic history, you can't go wrong with INSIDE WELLINGTON'S ARMY.

Advice columnist! Abby's class has decided to work on a class newspaper. Abby is unsure of what she should work on, until she has a sudden revalation - she's good at giving advice! So Abby decides to become "Gabby Abby", giver of advice. At first, it doesn't work out as well as Abby would have planned.
But eventually, Abby finds that the pen is, indeed, mightier than the sword.
A very sweet addition to the series, but not entirely my cup of tea.

Abby's class was starting a newspaper called "The Lancaster Lark" in their school. And Abby planned to be a star reporter, but she was only an advice columnist. Abby was also stuck with boring and stupid questions. So were serious, but one of her ideas nearly killed someone!
Then, in class... she thought of a new assignment for the newspaper. And that assignment will help her friend get back her couragement.

I recently finished this book. I thought is
was a good book but it could have been better.
Abby Hayes is the advice columnest for her
school newpaper called The Lancaster Lark.
But after the first issue comes out she
feels like bad thing will come out of it.
But later, some good things come instead
of the bad things she imagined.
I still think the Abby Hayes series is
one of the best series out there!

1 out of 5 stars Very limited writing style.......2007-08-24

It is really hard to find the right words for this work that reads like it was written by an adolescent with a huge inferiority complex describing one of those violent video games. If you are one of those military blockheads you might find this book entertaining, but in all consequence it has no value when it comes to add to the aspects of the Irish War. The author's writing abilities are simply too limited. If this book is really a reflection on the workings of "Britain's Most Secret Service" then I have to worry about their abilities to handle such complex tasks as fighting terrorists.

5 out of 5 stars Great reading for the professional soldier!.......2006-08-21

What I like about this book is its apparent honesty. The author does not over inflate his achievements. If he were lying, the book would be more blood and guts and" I wuz there." He is careful to make clear that he was not personally involved in some of the incidents he relates. I found the details about the selection process and later operational skills to be fascinating.

What was also valuable is that you see that the selection process was not just a bunch of crap, but was actually required for the job to be done. His treatment of weapons and capabilities is straightforward and accurate.

The book also touches on the sometimes jealousy and cooperation between Company 14 and the SAS.

(There is the possibility that some facts were altered for security purposes. The book was vetted by the Ministry of Defense.)

Any young troop contemplating some type of special forces selection process would to well to read this book (there are others) to see what kind of head games you are in for.

Book Description

At once harrowing and lighthearted, Sulzbach's exceptional diary has been highly praised since its original publication in Germany in 1935. With the reprint of this classic account of trench warfare it records the pride and exhilaration of what to him was the fight for a just cause. It is one of the very few available records of an ordinary German soldier during the First World War. "One of the most notable books on the Great War. It is a book which finely expressed the true soldierly spirit on its highest level; the combination of a high sense of duty, courage, fairness and chivalry." Sir Basil Liddell Hart

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Key German Memoir.......2007-02-13

'With the German Guns' is the English version of a book originally published in German. It has the major strength that few other memoirs by German soldiers of the period are availiable in English. It contains fascinating passages describing bombardments (from the perspective of those doing the shooting !) Its coverage may be criticised as uneven - but then as an accurate memoir of real war service this is almost inevitable. A 'top twenty' book for anyone interested in WW1 memoirs, or the German army of 1914-1918.

5 out of 5 stars insight into despair.......2006-07-30

Fascinating account of the German soldier who stood firm throughout the war only to find that his nation had crumbled behind the front. Even at the war's end he had been able to travel to travel by train to see his parents while his unit was still in France and Belgium slowly retreating toward their Seigfried Line. His attitudes toward the righteousness of the German cause are clearly expressed as is his confidence in ultimate victory. Defeat came hard.

5 out of 5 stars A phenomenal read to say the least!.......2004-06-10

I am not sure if Herbert Sulzbach had ever intended on having his diary pubilshed for the world to read, which is precisely why I believe this book to be so intriguing. Any WWI history guru will most likely not be surprised by the dramatic events to unfold within the pages, but that is certainly not the point of this book. Its fascinating to read the day-by-day accounts of a young man fighting for the love of his life, The Fatherland.

It was incredibly interesting to sit back and read about the heroism and the tragedies suffered by Sulzbach. The disappointments he felt when friends fell, and when the tides turned. I almost felt sad when I could see the excitement he had to learn that it looked as if America was going to join the war and fight alongside Germany!

In short, this book is highly reccomended! Not your typical read by any means. Would love to see his WWII diaries (if he kept them at that time) published, as he joined the British Army to help rid Germany of Nazi rule. A true patriot, and a true hero!

4 out of 5 stars This diary is a vivid recreation of life on the W. Front.......1998-10-18

Herbert Sulzbach's diary is a vivid recollection of his life on the Western Front from August 1914 through the armistice of November 1918. Sulzbach enters the war as a member of an artillery battery. Due to his abilities, he advances steadily; especially given the attrition of army officers on the Western Front. He writes of his times in the firing line and of his several leaves back home in Germany. The diary is full of poignant and telling detail. Containing the necessary specifics of the war's terrors, the diary dwells on the human and humane incidents as well. The author's descriptions of his journeys by train, horse, and foot across the several different sectors where he served, are memorable. Sulzbach's writing is never dry and his abilities are neither primative nor academic. Though always a patriot, Sulzbach is affected by the failing German cause. His experiences are of the major battles from the Somme to the last German offensives. Sulzbach has the distinction of becoming a British officer in WWII and his work to reunite Germany and England has earned him a place of honor in both countries. Readers of this book might also like Vaughan's SOME DESPERATE GLORY; Graves's GOOD-BYE TO ALL THAT; and Sassoon's THE MEMOIRS OF A FOX-HUNTING MAN. This book would be a good way to enter the history of WWI from the vantage point of a single individual's service.

    Book Description

Histories of the Waterloo campaign and tours of the battlefield generally concentrate on the battle between the armies of Napoleon and Wellington - the role of Blucher's Prussians is left in the background. Peter Hofschoer's fascinating account focuses on the Prussians at the Battle of Waterloo and on their critical but often neglected contribution to the battle. He tells the story of the grueling Prussian advance towards the battlefield and he records the ferocious and decisive fight that broke out when they arrived. At every stage he allows the reader to follow in the footsteps of the Prussian soldiers as they struggled across the Belgian countryside almost 200 years ago.

      ASIN: 1844154718

      Book Description

These are the highly evocative wartime memoirs of a young NCO pilot whose operational experience was with Beaufighters and Mosquitoes flying in the long-range night-fighter role.

It is not a gung-ho account of daring-do, but a 'warts and all' story of what life was really like in that time of international crisis. No punches are pulled when the author experienced badly designed and dangerous aircraft, such as the Merlin-engined Beaufighter that was almost impossible to fly and killed many pilots during training, nor are the blinding errors made by those staff officers who conceived impossible tasks and operations which these young airmen were ordered to fly and survive.

Threaded into a fascinating story of flying with the then leading-edge electronic technology, are the entirely human tales of nights out on the town, when stressed crews could relieve the stress of combat.

Some hilarious accounts of wild nights on the ground blend comfortably with the dark skies over Europe and the endless search for the invisible Luftwaffe who were tasked with the destruction of Allied heavy bombers.

      Book Description

This book provides new light on the way the Argentine forces were organized for war, the plans and reactions of the commanders, the sufferings of the soldiers and the shame and disillusionment of defeat. Martin Middlebrook has produced a genuine 'first' with this unique work.

Martin Middlebrook is the only British historian to have been granted open access to the Argentines who planned and fought the Falklands War. It ranks with Liddel Hart's The Other side of the Hill in analyzing and understanding the military thinking and strategies of Britain's sometime enemy, and is essential reading for all who wish to understand the workings of military minds.

The book provides new light on the way Argentine forces were organized for war, the plans and reactions of the commanders, the sufferings of the soldiers and the shame and disillusionment of defeat.

      4 out of 5 stars Well written.......2007-08-15

A good book covering the angles from a different side - detailed in some areas but silent on others especially as a cross reference against the very British publications (eg Max Hastings etc).
A very good book on the individual stories and very well worth the read if nothing more than on the very different perspective from the Argentine side.

5 out of 5 stars A must read if you have any interest in this conflict..........2007-05-10

I have never read one of Mr Middlebrook's books before, but I am now searching for other titles by him. Because this was one of those books that I had a hard time putting down. Up front let me say that my nationalty is British and I can remember the Falklands War like it was yesterday. However despite having read numerous accounts of the British Victory very little has been said from the perspective of the soldiers who wore the Argentine Unform. This book changes all that, and thru what where obviously some pretty intense interviews as you read this book you start to get a feeling and even an understanding of the passions and emotions of the young soldiers facing the Brits. In the western press we hear about the superiority of the British War machine during the conflict; however the Argentines did put up a spirited if ineffective defence of the Falklands. Another thing that I thought was very interesting about this book is that we get to see how and why misinformation was distributed in the fog of war. I suppose the difference between the British and Argentine governments is that we laid open the books after the conflict to the public versus the Argentines who outright lied to preserve face. Then there are the issues of the foot soldiers on the Argentine side who despite facing what is arguable the best trained army in the world, displayed uncommon gallantry far and above what the pro British press has previously reported. About the only thing I wish Mr Middlebrook had fleshed out a little more is politcs of the Argentines on the mainland.

4 out of 5 stars The Falklands War from an Argentine Perspective?.......2005-08-24

For those of you looking for something different to Sir Lawrence Freedman's official history, or Max Hastings 'Falklands War', try Martin Middlebrook's 'The Argentine Fight for the Falklands'. I bought it thinking it was another Argentine perspective. But for Falklands analysts it is still worth having in the library. Pages 131-132 alone are worth the price. Two British frigates were very nearly sunk by an Argentine submarine. Why they survived makes interesting reading and is very useful for capability analysis today.

      Book Description

Carve Her Name With Pride is the inspiring story of the half-French Violette Szabo who was born in Paris Iin 1921 to an English motor-car dealer, and a French Mother. She met and married Etienne Szabo, a Captain in the French Foreign Legion in 1940. Shortly after the birth of her daughter, Tania, her husband died at El Alamein. She became a FANY (First Aid Nursing Yeomanry) and was recruited into the SOE and underwent secret agent training. Her first trip to France was completed successfully even though she was arrested and then released by the French Police.

On June 7th, 1944, Szabo was parachuted into Limoges. Her task was to co-ordinate the work of the French Resistance in the area in the first days after D-Day. She was captured by the SS 'Das Reich' Panzer Division and handed over to the Gestapo in Paris for interrogation. From Paris, Violette Szabo was sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp where she was executed in January 1945. She was only 23 and for her courage was posthumously awarded The George Cross and the Croix de Guerre.

5 out of 5 stars Classic WWII spy story.......2007-05-13

I first read a "children's" edition of this when I was about 11, and was so taken by it that for years I searched for an unabridged version. Sadly, it was out of print for years; now Pen and Sword Military Classics have published the unabridged version, and it was well worth the (decades-long) wait.
Violette Szabo, French-born of British and French parents, and living in London during WWII, joined the SOE (Special Operations Executive) in 1943, after the death of her French Foreign Legion husband and the birth of their daughter. She underwent rigorous secret agent training and was eventually sent into France in support of various French Resistance groups. Her second operation saw her parachuted into Limoges on June 7th, 1944 (D-Day +1), where she was to co-ordinate various Resistance work in the area.
Szabo and her Resistance liaison were ambushed and she was eventually captured, although not until she had secured the escape of the Resistance liaison. She was initially interrogated in Limoges, and was then sent to Gestapo HQ in Paris for further interrogation and torture. From Paris, Szabo was sent to Ravensbruck, where she and several other English spies were eventually executed, possibly to avoid the prospect of these women implicating the Ravensbruck command structure in systematic torture of prisoners. Szabo was twenty-three at the time of her death. She was posthumously awarded the George Cross and the Croix de Guerre.
Notwithstanding the somewhat more formal biographical style of the 1950's, R.J. Minney reconstructs and recreates with elan the short and intense life of Violette Szabo. This is an extraordinary tale of courage and deserves to be widely read.

        Book Description

This is the long-awaited 'missing' history of a unique London regiment. Thoroughly deserving of its name, the Artists Rifles traces its origins to a meeting to discuss the threat of invasion by Napoleon III in 1859, of students at Careys School of Art which led to the formation of the 'Corps of Artists'. This unit was composed of painters, sculptors, engravers, architects, musicians, poets and actors. Remarkably many of the most famous names in British art (Millais, Rossetti, Frederick Leighton etc) have proudly to served in The Artists.

In addition to giving insights into unusual aspects of many distinguished figures' lives, this superbly researched and comprehensive book covers the Artists Rifles' activities in the Boer War, The Great War and Second World War.

The Artists' Rifles happily live on as an active Association. When it was decided in 1947 to resurrect the Special Air Service as a territorial unit, 21 SAS was formed out of the Artists es. They in turn gave birth to the Regular 22 SAS.

        Book Description

Secret Cold War Nuclear Bunkers tells the previously undisclosed story of the secret defense structures built by the West during the Cold War years. The book describes in fascinating detail a vast umbrella of radar stations that spanned the North American continent and the North Atlantic from the Aleutian Islands through Canada to the North Yorkshire Moors, all centered upon an enormous secret control centre buried hundreds of feet below Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado. This is complemented in the United Kingdom with a chain of secret radars codenamed 'Rotor' built in the early 1950's, and eight huge, inland sector control centers, built over 100' underground at enormous cost. The book reveals the various bunkers built for the U.S Administration, including the Raven Rock alternate war headquarters (the Pentagon's wartime hideout), the Greenbrier bunker for the Senate and House of Representatives, and the Mount Weather central government headquarters amongst others. Developments in Canada, including the Ottawa 'Diefenbunker' and the regional government bunkers are also studied. In the UK there were the London bunkers and the Regional War rooms built in the 1950's to protect against the Soviet threat, and their replacement in 1958 by much more hardened, underground Regional Seats of Government in the provinces, and the unique Central Government War Headquarters at Corsham.

Finally the book examines the provision, (or more accurately, lack of provision), of shelter space for the general population, comparing the situation in the USA and the UK with some other European countries and with the Soviet Union.

2 out of 5 stars Better As a General Reference Book........2005-08-24

Mr. McCamley has certainly jumped right in to the world of bunkers, but frankly, this book is much better as a general reference book than it is as a good read. McCamley could have used the services of a good editor as the book is disjointed and contains a number of snide comments concerning the Cold War. Certainly one need not agree with Herman Kahn, but reality dictates that nuclear calculus is a bleak and callous field. McCamley doesn't seem to understand that, and continually editorializes, offering uneducated commentary and his feelings instead of clear, concise analysis.

The book begins with a brief overview of American and Canadian defense preparations during the Cold War, but spends too much time on actual dollar amounts and radar sites that were, for the most part, not hardened at all--they weren't bunkers.

He only briefly mentions American nuclear missile bunkers, and focuses on the large ones: Cheyenne Mountain, Mt. Weather, the Greenbriar, Mt. Pony, and Raven Rock. Again, he seems more interested in sneering at the people that built them and their likely effectiveness than giving any real insight to their reason for existence.

The rest of the book is very nearly just a catalog of the rather small bunkers throughout the UK, which are relatively similar to each other. There is a brief description of the Carrier Warning System that would have been used for warning the UK populace, but again this is glossed over.

As others have mentioned, the book could have used some fact-checking. While plenty of the errors are glaring, one has to wonder how many other things are wrong when it comes to more obscure facts.

Overall, I would suggest this book as a brief intro to American and Canadian Cold War defense systems and a catalogue of bunkers in the United Kingdom. Those looking for more will be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars More Secret Bunkers.......2004-09-29

This book is an excellent addition for the library of anyone interested in cold war facilities, radar and communication systems. There are some inconsistencies but overall a good reference. Lots of good photos and floorplans. Hopefully, those locations not noted in this book will be examined in a future book.

2 out of 5 stars US material contains mistakes.......2004-03-07

This maybe a good book on UK bunkers of which there are many listed and detailed. US information contains many errors in the first edition. Example: Mount Pony Currency Vault for "North" of the Mississippi, should be "East" (the Mississippi flows North to South). The book is also full of the author anti-commentary, rather than descriptive analysis of the preparations. Does however have a map of Raven Rock which is rare to find.

        3 out of 5 stars A Good Attempt.......2002-11-27

Nick McCamley has done a good job at covering the the extensive network of passive defense sites in the UK. This is a difficult subject that the author has obviously spent quite a long time researching and documenting. McCamley should have stopped with the UK.

McCamley's treatment of North America lacks the thoroughness that his chapters on the UK show. The first part of the book attempts to cover the bunkers in the US and Canada. While he covers the Texas Towers in the middle of the ocean, he fails to even mention the RCAF bunker at North Bay in his chapter on Canada.

Additionally, the author's explanation of the causes of the Cold War and the effects are sophomoric at best. He attempts to summarize the complex political, economic, military, historical, and philosophical forces up in trite blame America explanations. He should have kept to his area of expertise.

The book shows a sloppy preparation by the publisher. For example, on the rear dust cover, it has a picture of a Titan II ICBM labeled as a "Peacemaker." The Peacemaker was the Convair B-36 bomber. Either the publisher was ignorant or they were mistaken and confused a "Peacekeeper" ICBM with a Titan II. There is no excuse for this kind of error, especially on the dust jacket. It can only lead you question the fact checking that the publisher did through the rest of the volume. The editing has typos, such as B-39 instead of B-29, and the book is choppy. Chapters seem to have been written independently and for different places than they were eventually put in the book.

I recommend this work as a starting point for those who want to know about the bunker system in the UK. If you can see past the short comings mentioned above, this is a good attempt at a difficult subject.

        4 out of 5 stars a good book.......2002-09-24

this is a very good book and read , i recommend it as it is chock full of information , but it mostly only covers the buildings of cold war england , which it didnt mention in the editorial review , though there is a bit about norrad and sage and some early american cold war projects in the biginning.i did expect some more indepth pictures of some of the sites which is why i only gave it a 4 (with more pictures i would have given it a 5) overall it is a recommended read and an excelent addition to a post ww2 library.
