2 out of 5 stars Great start, but lousy finish.......2001-01-12

Lynn Miller starts off with a wonderful review of the Treaty of Westphalia's impact on diplomacy over the past few centuries. This gives the reader the impression that the rest of the book will be equally impressive, maybe shedding light on some of the major diplomatic challenges that have occurred in the recent past. Unfortunately, this impression is horribly wrong. Miller decides to use her skills in expounding on the "evils" of the modern world and the governments that control it. Her use of the conclusions she drew from the first part of the book is legitimate, but focused on social issues that she portrays as being easily remedied if only governments followed her prescriptions. In addition to the preaching, she falls into the habit of declaring as facts many issues and details that were debatable when she wrote this (1991) and still have not been resolved. This tends to make it hard for the reader to have faith in her any longer and when that happens it's time to choose another book.

    Book Description

How is the world organized politically? How should it be organized? What forms of political organization are required to deal with such global challenges as climate change, terrorism or nuclear proliferation? Drawing on work in international law, international relations and global governance, this book provides a clear and wide-ranging introduction to the analysis of global political order -- how patterns of governance and institutionalization in world politics have already changed; what the most important challenges are; and what the way forward might look like. The first section develops three analytical frameworks: a world of sovereign states capable of only limited cooperation; a world of ever-denser international institutions embodying the idea of an international community; and a world in which global governance moves beyond the state and into the realms of markets, civil society and networks. Part II examines five of the most important issues facing contemporary international society: nationalism and the politics of identity; human rights and democracy; war, violence and collective security; the ecological challenge; and the management of economic globalization in a highly unequal world. Part III considers the idea of an emerging multi-regional system; and the picture of global order built around US empire. The conclusion looks at the normative implications. If international society has indeed been changing in the ways discussed in this book, what ought we to do? And, still more crucially, who is the 'we' that is to be at the centre of this drive to create a morally better world? This book is concerned with the fate of international society in an era of globalization and the ability of the inherited society of sovereign states to provide a practically viable and normatively acceptable framework for global political order. It lays particular emphasis on the different forms of global inequality and the problems of legitimacy that these create and on the challenges posed by cultural diversity and value conflict.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible lab manual.......2007-02-24

I inherited this lab manual when I started teaching physical geology this semester, and I told my students to return it to the bookstore. It contains factual errors (such as referring to hornblende and other non-metallic minerals as metallic, which they are not - metallic minerals are opaque in thin section), and the pedagogy is highly questionable. In the rock and mineral sections, it relies too heavily on photographs. Students already have a tendency to want to simply match minerals and rocks to pictures, which doesn't work, and this book encourages this. The book is too much talk and not enough action. Students in a lab should be guided to work with objects, not to simply answer questions out of a book. There is too much explanation provided, with little left for students to figure out on their own. Labs should be presented to students as mysteries to be solved, and this book takes all the mystery out of everything.

    1 out of 5 stars Geology Prof........2007-01-06

This "lab manual" is VERY thick and far too wordy. Really, it's more of a spiral-bound textbook than a lab manual. Additionally, the lab questions appear in list format at the end of each section, so there is virtually no standardized answersheet for students to record their work on. That not only makes it harder on the students, but efficient grading is nearly impossible unless the instructor makes his/her own taylor-made answer sheets for the students to use on EACH lab. As if that weren't bad enough, the lab manual's companion web site is horrid. I am amazed that the AGI and the NAGT produced this lab manual.

4 out of 5 stars Because they asked me to.......2006-11-04

I bought this book for school, since my school was out of the book and this one was cheaper. It does the job, it is probably less expensive than your school, and you can't get a used one because usually some of the pages you need are missing.

5 out of 5 stars Laboratory Manual in Physical Geology.......2006-08-08

Publishers are driving me nuts with their inflated prices...they made a small number of edition #6 which was considered their best one and then let their supplies run out so that schools would have to buy their "new" one. After flipping through it, it is clear that it is nearly identical to the sixth edition lab manual. Such a waste.

I orderd one item and received something else. This item was needed for an on-line class and due to the error I am behind schedule on my class work.

    Book Description

If it's important for you to incorporate the scientific method into your teaching, this lab manual is the perfect fit. In every exercise there are scientific method boxes that provide students with insight into the relevance of the scientific method to the topic at hand. The manual also includes "In Greater Depth" problems, a more challenging probe into certain issues. They are more quantitative in nature and require more in-depth, critical thinking, which is unique to this type of manual.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars could be a textbook in its own right.......2007-04-05

I'm not sure about this. It calls itself a lab manual. Yes, it is spiral bound, with perforated pages for easy detachment, like many such manuals. Yet the text seems like that of a conventional geology book. Perhaps what really distinguishes the manual as such is the extensive problem sets. One to each chapter.

But if you want to learn geology, and do not have the accompanying Physical Geology book, you can still profitably and enjoyably read this manual. There is enough text and illustrations here to adequately convey lessons to a motivated reader.

    5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-07-06

Needed it for my Physical Anthropology class, pretty good but diagrams too small, but otherwise pretty good.

    2 out of 5 stars confusing.......2007-05-22

As a teaching assistant using the new edition of the lab manual, my students and I continualy ran into problems with this addition. Not only is it full of typos (eg. labeling A. africanus as A. robustus), but it is also confusing in the types of questions asked. Plus, the chapters themselves are arranged differently and lack in detail.

    1 out of 5 stars An anthropology student's nightmare.......2005-03-22

My professor has chosen to use this lab book for her "Introductory Biological Anthropology" course. On average, my classmates and I spend around four or five hours hunting for answers hidden within. The common theory we have is that somewhere there is a textbook that might accompany it. The diagrams are not very helpful - tiny black and white pictures that we are supposed to compare in size, shape, etc. The questions are very vague - before I started to type this review, I was using google to try to find some sort of answers for my lab before meeting with almost half of my class to go over what we've each individually found. At the end of term, I am definately having a book burning party for this manual!

4 out of 5 stars ONLY GAME IN TOWN.......2003-12-20

I've used this manual for my physical anthropology classes since the 3rd edition, and there has been some improvement. It's the only game in town as far as lab manuals go, although the students also like Kappelman's VIRTUAL LABORATORIES cd-rom.

There's an instructor's manual available for printout from the publisher, but the key has some WRONG answers, which is annoying when one is swamped or has a student assistant grading who may not realize that the key is wrong. For example, the solution to the ABO blood group frequencies in exercise 1.6.3b is wrong and there are some weird stats in exercise 11.2's key, but that might be my mistake.

Some of the info is arcane, and refers to information that is not available in the prefatory chapter in the manual or in most phys anth texts. Specifically, why is it important to know about cingula?

The exercises are a bit redundant and over-long, but that's what the students have told me -- I actually like the way that France has the students build the answers to the problems in stages, going from simple to complex. The pictures in the 5th edition ARE better, but the mechanics of doing the exercises w/pictures can get crazy sometimes, what with flipping back to see this figure or that. Some exercises refer to figures several chapters back, and are a little hard to find.

I know that I will keep using this manual. It's good for undergraduate through graduate students, it represents a huge amount of work on France's part (which I appreciate!) and it's the only game in town.

*** this review refers to the latest, 5th edition.

    5 out of 5 stars Caution!.......2003-07-03

The review quoted here refers to a VERY old edition. The new 5th edition is out now, so please review THAT edition for possible use. Constructive criticism is always welcome.

          Book Description

This text presents a survey of the physical sciences—physics, chemistry, astronomy, meteorology, and geology—for non-science majors. Topics are treated both descriptively and quantitatively, providing flexibility for instructors who wish to emphasize a highly descriptive approach, a highly quantitative approach, or any spectrum in between.

Concepts to be treated mathematically are consistently introduced from three perspectives. First, the concept is defined in words, as briefly as possible. Second, the definition is presented as an equation in word form. Finally, the concept is expressed in symbol notation.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Survey, But Necessarily Superficial.......2002-05-06

This wonderful little book presents a superficial (if you want string theory or statistical mechanics, look elsewhere) survey of an interesting selection of topics that should interest any curious student, even one considering a career in a "hard" science. It should present no great challenge to the sudent with a year or two of algebra; this is not to imply that the approach is mathematical - it isn't. However, some very basic math is necessary in any book of this kind. This kind of overview should also be useful for the high school or junior college student who wants to know something about the nuts-and-bolts of various careers in the physical sciences: physicist, geologist, chemist, physiologist/biophysicist, biochemist, molecular biologist, astronomer, etc. Even the non-scientist layperson wants to know how and why batteries work, the phases of the moon and tidal influences, and, for just one more example, why nuclear bombs go BOOM in such a big way. The graphs are simple, and clearly labeled, there are many illustrations and photographs, and the authors seem to have tried to avoid "Dick and Jane" demonstrations of principles. If you are curious about the functioning of our universe and the world around you - and want a pleasant introduction to some of the particulars of that world, you will be impressed with the successful treatment shown in this book. I highly recommend it.

This is a interesting book. I am currently enrolled in this class. I am not doing so well in it. It is sort of complicated because the teacher teaches from another book. I would like the instructors to recieve some guidelines according to how the lessons are to be reviewed and the tests should be given from the book instead of tests from other universities with different books and notes.
