4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

I am happy to read Mignola BPRD type tales whenever he comes up with them, or the cows come home, whichever comes last. These are Hellboyless, but have some other characters. A homunculus, and a ghost man who wears a suit so that he can interact with the physical environment, and a new field leader hard bitten, deformed military man type.

Some of this is to show the relationships between the characters, and how the BPRD humans are increasingly alienating them. It shows how Hellboy rescues Abe from test after test after test, and then Abe does the same thing for Roger the Homunculus, from the very same scientists, a couple of decades later.

They also have to rescue Liz, who appears in a sending, after being gone yet again, for a couple of years.

5 out of 5 stars A Solid Outing for Hollow Earth.......2006-09-15

B.P.R.D. stands for the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, a secret U.S. agency that protects the world from supernatural threats. It is a spin-off title from Mike Magnolia's popular Hellboy comic book series, and details the adventures of the agency's other "special" operatives.

The team includes Abe Sapien, a blue-skinned gill-man with a mysterious past; Liz Sherman, a neurotic pyrokinetic; Johann Kraus, a German psychic whose body was destroyed while his spirit was visiting the astral plane; and Roger the Homunculus, a medieval golem with tremendous strength and a child-like personality.

"The Hollow Earth" storyline serves as a general introduction to the B.P.R.D team for those readers unfamiliar with the Hellboy mythos. It does a good job of showing how Hellboy's resignation affects each member. The bureau just brings the newly-disembodied medium, Johann, into the group while Abe Sapien debates quitting the team and taking Roger with him. Meanwhile, Liz Sherman has taken a sabbatical, traveling to the mystical realm of Agarta in the hopes of learning to tame the fire within her.

Outside events soon bring everyone together, however, as an attack on the monastery Liz is staying at prompts her to send a psychic S.O.S. to her friend Abe. The bureau quickly mobilizes and sends the team out on a search and rescue mission that leads them into the very bowels of the earth. This is a very good story. Each member's unique strengths are highlighted, and the group dynamic is set up very well.

This collection also features two shorter stories. The first, "The Killer in My Head" features Lobster Johnson (a grim 1930s paranormal investigator first introduced in "Hellboy: The Conqueror Worm"). Several prominent scientists are found dead inside locked rooms and our hero has to solve the mystery. The second, "Abe Sapien Versus Science" is a short vignette that shows Abe filling the void left by Hellboy by rescuing Roger from the perpetual prodding of the bureau's scientists, mirroring Hellboy's actions years ago when he rescued Abe from the same thing.

Also included is the rare Abe Sapien one-shot, "The Drums of the Dead", written by Brian McDonald and drawn by Derek Thompson. This is a story about the mysterious and deadly happenings aboard cargo and fishing ships along the oceanic trade routes between America and Africa. The artwork is very dark, which mirrors the mood of the story. The plot is simple, but action packed and delivers an emotional punch as well.

4 out of 5 stars good book.......2006-08-24

while i would prefer to read solely about hellboy himself, reading about the bprd is entertaining. the stories contained in this volume fit well into the hellboy mythos. while the art is not mignola's, it has it's own flair to it that sets the mood. the writing is good of course, and the title story and the others hold up well to what has been published in the past. i would of course urge any fan of hellboy and his universe to pick this one up if they have not already. if you are looking to read something different and are a fan of comics, this will hold you over, and i guarantee you will be hooked.

4 out of 5 stars hollow earth full of great stories.......2006-08-20

B.P.R.D. stands for "Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense," an extragovernmental agency that polices the supernatural in the world of Mike Mignola's Hellboy. Think The X-Files meets The X-Men.
"Hollow Earth," the first story in the volume, is tale of Johann Kraus' first adventure with the team, a mission to rescue pyrokinetic Liz Sherman from a swarm of Stanislav Szukalski-inspired subterraneans. The tale is pivotal in Mignola's mythos in that one can see the characters attempting to fill the void created by Hellboy's departure from the Bureau.
As a sort of epilogue to "Hollow Earth," the volume includes the origin of Johann Kraus, the story of the Chengdou Disaster, in newspaper format.
My favorite piece is "The Killer in My Skull," a tale of 1938 New York City, starring my favorite Mignola character, Lobster Johnson. Lobster Johnson is the goggle-wearing, .45-totin', The Shadow-like crime fighter of the series.
Then it's back to the future so that the reader gets a glimpse of what the "R" in BPRD stands for. In "Abe Sapien versus Science," Abe Sapien rescues Roger the homunculus from the scientific pokings-and-proddings of BPRD scientists in much the same way that Hellboy rescued Abe himself from their curious clutches years earlier.
The final story "Drum of The Dead" features Abe Sapien and Gabriel Omatta, a former seminarian who sees dead people for the Bureau, in a supernatural tale of sharks, more sharks, and the Middle Passage.
In an age when one finds it necessary to take out a loan from the bank to buy comic books on a regular basis, this compilation of stories is a great pick for anyone wishing to enjoy great stories bundled together in one reasonably priced package.

Book Description

A remarkable cultural history of what might exist under the Earth's surface—as reflected in mythology, religion, science, literature, and good old crackpottery. Beliefs in mysterious underworlds are as old as humanity. But the idea that the earth has a hollow interior was first proposed as a scientific theory in 1691 by Sir Edmond Halley (of comet fame), who also suggested that there might be life down there as well. Hollow Earth traces the many surprising, marvelous, and just plain weird permutations his ideas have taken over the centuries. Both Edgar Allan Poe and (more famously) Jules Verne picked up the torch in the nineteenth century, the latter with his science fiction epic A Journey to the Center of the Earth. The notion of a hollow earth even inspired a religion at the turn of the twentieth century—Koreshanity, which held not only that the earth was hollow, but also that we're all living on the inside.Utopian novels and adventures abounded at this same time, including L. Frank Baum's hollow earth addition to the Oz series and Edgar Rice Burroughs's Pellucidar books chronicling a stone-age hollow earth. In the 1940s an enterprising science-fiction magazine editor convinced people that the true origins of flying saucers lay within the hollow earth, relics of an advanced alien civilization. And there are still devout hollow earthers today, some of whom claim there is a New Age utopia lurking beneath the earth's surface, with at least one entrance near Mt. Shasta in California. Hollow Earth travels through centuries and cultures, exploring how each era's relationship to the idea of a hollow earth mirrored its hopes, fears, and values. Illustrated with everything from seventeenth-century maps to 1950s pulp art to movie posters and more, Hollow Earth is for anyone interested in the history of strange ideas that just won't go away.

4 out of 5 stars I enjoyed every minute of this fun book.......2007-08-28

In 1692, the famous English astronomer and physicist, Edmond Halley, penned a manuscript in which he speculated that the Earth's magnetism was generated by matter within our world, which is actually hollow. From that time until the present, people have speculated as to what might be within the hollow Earth...and who. This book chronicles the history of those speculations.

Overall, I found this to be a rather interesting read. The author does not treat his subject seriously, adding such statements as, "If this makes sense to you, you're ahead of me." I enjoyed reading about the various philosophical/religious groups that believed(?) in the hollow Earth, and the various authors that used it as a setting for various reasons. I enjoyed every minute of this fun book and highly recommend it!

3 out of 5 stars Odd Book on an Odd Subject.......2007-04-14

David Standish, who first and foremost a journalist and professor of journal ism has take to an odd subject with force. This is a pseudo-science book about a pseudo-science. The basic idea is that for the last three hundred years, people have been writing about the possibility that the earth is hollow inside (either with sphere-in-sphere like nesting dolls, or with large voids or caverns) and that the civilizations contains within are either Utopias or Dystopias.

We begin with the musings of Edward Halley (yeah, the comet guy) though the 'scientific explanation' of Richard Symmes who established that the North and South Poles have hughe openings that lead into the 'underworld'.
We are even treated to a history lesson on 'Korashanity' which was a fin-de-siecle religion that believed in the 'hollow earth' and created a utopia colony in Florida at that time. The story is interesting if a little over done since there were never more that 200 adherents at any one time.

Next we get a lesson on the history of early 'hollow earth' books, which culminate in the publication of Jules Verne's "Journey to the Center of the Earth". Having established that there were something like fifty book published up-to 1910, he then goes on to review five or six of the stories themselves. All well and good, but this part of the book seems more like 'filler' than anything else.

A whole chapter is then devoted to Edgar Rice Burroughs' writings about "Pellucidar" and "Tarzan". This section being a mini-biography about ERB as well as descriptions and reviews of his books and how they tie-in to many of the previously mentioned theories about hollow earth. Lastly, are reviews of the good, bad and downright horrible, B Movies that were made in the late forties and fifties (including Superman and the Mole People) and how they relate to hollow earth theories.

All-in-all the book tries to be both hip and camp at the same time as it tries to treat the subject seriously, which is a very difficult act to pull off. I for one don't think he was able to do it, but it make nice reading for a rainy day like a coffee table book.

3 out of 5 stars Good picture and lay-out, poor idea behind the content.......2007-03-20

I bought this book because I was attracted by the subject it is about. Unfortunately, once I got it and had the opportunity to read it, I realized that it was rather disappointing towards my expectancies. It's all about the official journalistic mantra of discrediting and crucifying everything with is not "scientifically supported"... Therefore, I pondered on how much paper and ink were consumed to produce this "Torquemada work" against the issue of the "Hollow Earth"... Nonetheless, the pictures and the lay-out of it (for eg., the quality of the paper used) are excellent! If it wasn't for these last details, I would have even rated itlower than 3 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Research plus contemporary viewpoint........2007-01-11

David Standish must have dug through hundreds of libraries and book stores to come up with this wonderful, humorous study of oddball science. By combining myth, geology, the fact that crackpots draw groupies, and a few centuries worth of pop culture, he shows us how legends, even religions, can sprout from the smallest bizarre concept. From Isaac Newton to Indiana Jones, the Earth's core to the heart of academia, Standish records our desires to create utopias and probe odd mysteries. Much info - much fun.

3 out of 5 stars Yes, but does it bounce?.......2006-11-08

Hollow Earth digs deep to uncover the many myths, fallacious science, and fantastic stories that arise from the imagination of what might be below. David Standish chronicles man's fascination with the possibility of subterranean life and delivers all the stories: from the serious concentric magnetic circles of Sir Edmund Halley (of Comet fame) to modern day comic books and sci-fi movies. Standish delivers with a wry sense of humor.

Serious scientists, intrepid explorers, messianic marauders, and imaginative writers feed off one another's vision of why the Earth is hollow, how to get into it, and what the place looks like. Among the colorful characters are the famous - Halley, Edgar Allan Poe, Jules Verne, Edgar Rice Burroughs. But even more interesting are the obscure promoters and charlatans. John Cleves Symmes is the ex-sailor who invents the way in ... through his 'holes' in the poles. Enter via the North Pole, ride the river through the Earth's center, and exit the South Pole. Easy! Let's grab a government sponsored ship and go!

Then a fin-de-siecle promoter of electro-magneto-spiritual energy, Cyrus Teed, provides pseudo scientific explanations of why the Earth is not convex, but concave. A lengthy chapter follows on Teed's philosophy of Koreshanity and subsequent establishment of his utopian community in the swamps of Florida. The Teed chapter runs a bit long and off-topic from the hollow earth theme, but Standish has found a treasure trove of laughs and he knows it. The photograph of two dozen Koreshians on a Florida beach measuring the Earth's concavity with heavy timbers (the Rectilineator) is laugh-out-loud material.

Sometimes, Standish enjoys his topic too much ... he replicates the quirky authors' work in exacting detail, and the 289 page books bogs down. Just skip ahead. Hollow Earth is a fun read, and highly recommended for American Studies majors.

2 out of 5 stars The Shaver Stories Plus New Age History.......2006-05-02

I purchased "Lost Continents & The Hollow Earth" by David Hatcher Childress & Richard Shaver because I was interested in reading the two Mutan Mion stories by Richard Shaver which are included. Although originally published in "Amazing Stories" (a fiction magazine), the author insisted that the stories were true, and many readers wrote in with their own experiences with beings from inside the Earth.

The first story in this book and the series is "I Remember Lemuria", a novella which was first published in "Amazing Stories" in March of 1945. In this story we are introduced to Mutan Mion (the Atlan whose memories Richard Shaver claims to have) who discovers that Mu (Earth) is being controlled by deros (detrimental energy robots). The story takes place in the far past, and uses myths such as Atlantis and the Titans in its subject matter. The story would fall into the category Space Opera, so if you enjoy that subgenre you may be interested in reading it. If one were to rate this story based on the impact it had at the time, it would have to get five stars, but in reading it now I would only give it three. It is difficult to understand how anyone would take it to be real, and there are much better Space Opera stories out there, such as the Lensman series by Dr. Edward E. Smith.

The second story is "The Return of Sathanas", which was first published in "Amazing Stories" in November of 1946 as a novel. However, it only runs about 100 pages, so it is really a novella size story. This is another of the Mutan Mion stories, and in this one he is in pursuit of Sathanas, a dero, and chases him back to Mu. This story brings some of the Norse mythology into play, but overall the story is nothing special. This story rates two stars by itself. This story was co-authored by Bob McKenna, but he is not credited in this text.

Also included in this book is the foreword to the 1948 book which contained both of these stories, and there is also an introduction (by David Hatcher Childress), a copy of the Shaver Alphabet, and a short piece called "The Shaver Mystery" (also by David Hatcher Childress) which talks about the controversial stories and their impact.

The rest of the book includes four short pieces by David Hatcher Childress which deal with "new age" theories about technologically advanced ancient civilizations which may have lived in the "Hollow Earth" or at least used vast networks of tunnels under the continents. While these are entertaining to read, they are not very good science as Childress will often describes how a source is discredited for certain reasons, and yet he continues to use some of their ideas as sources to support the existence of these ancient civilizations.

At this time, this book is the only place where one can find any of the Shaver stories, and so for that reason it might be of interest to some people. As a source of information about ancient civilizations it is entertaining, but much of it is based on questionable sources and it should not be taken as fact.

2 out of 5 stars Not so great.......2005-04-25

This book didn't turn out to be as interesting as I thought it would be. He reprints the entire 1948 book "I Remember Lemuria" by Richard Shaver. Which I found pretty boring. Childress' comments on the hollow earth were interesting though, but I wouldn't have bought the book for them.

1 out of 5 stars If you're into the Occult Buy this book..........2003-10-05

I bought this book thinking it would be a good interesting read. It was for a couple chapters and I couldnt finish it for fear of being ill. He basically borrows theories and other tidbits from other books by Occult authors. It talks about "The Great White Brotherhood" but doesnt mention that this Brotherhood is the top echelon of the Illuminati Occultists who rule this world. The first story was good because it shows what mind control can do to a person and reminds me of what Philip K Dick once went through. This book has limited documentation if any and no definitive answers and just mystery and doesn't resolve much. If you want a good read with documentation pick up "Bloodlines Of The Illuminati" by Fritz Springmeier. Its probably the most amazing book you will ever read!

2 out of 5 stars Some interesting stuff at the end.......2001-02-07

The book is split into 3 parts: two sci-fi stories from Richard Shaver's Lumeria series and three chapters on hollow earth history. The stories are stupid and boring. The only reason you would want to read them is if you were into Sci-Fi history. I couldn't even finish the Return of Santhas. The last three chapters on hollow earth history were quite interesting though. They follow some quack and some reasonable theories about tunnels in South America and Asia. He does a good recap of the Incan/Spanish conflict that led to the theories on lost cities of Gold. So parts 1&2 (no stars), part 3 (4 stars)

4 out of 5 stars Understanding the interdependence of animal life.......2007-09-16

When teaching science lessons on food webs or food chains, this would be an excellent addition to the lesson. The story of how each animal depends on other to survive is well told and beautifully illustrated. I especially liked the panorama view of the pond when you open the book's cover and back.

5 out of 5 stars Realistic wildlife illustrations enhance the day's journey.......2001-08-17

Although the facts presented here are nonfiction, the plot reads like fiction, blending an ecological study of a pond's life with descriptions of different animals' lives. Bob Marstall's realistic wildlife illustrations enhance the day's journey on Butternut Hollow Pond.

1 out of 5 stars grown up kids book being marketed as a juvenile book.......2001-08-07

The pictures are top notch. The writing, give me a break. What elementary age child wants to decipher each sentence for the meaning. " the sky blushed... the water is dapple in a confetti of pale light" Parents read it yourself and just talk about what the pictures represent, you know what your child understands. It's a grown up kids book being marketed as a juvenile book.

1 out of 5 stars Somebody help him!.......2007-05-27

This author writes about subjects that I believe merit real study and discussion. He does a disservice to the issues, with his mad ramblings. The one thing I learned from his book is that he needs psychological help. I am not big on medicating people, but in his case I'll make an exception.

1 out of 5 stars Return of the waste of paper.......2006-07-05

This is one of the most laughabe lamely written books that I have ever had the misfortune to encounter. If you wanna read stupid stuff about how the author can just look at people and know that they are demons ect. then go ahead and waste your money the same way I did.The author is full of hatred and judgement and wants to be veiwed as a messiah. Truly worthless waste of paper.

1 out of 5 stars Shocking.......2006-03-12

Shocking that after buying this book, further contact with the author has resulted in him confessing he doesn't believe in Jesus.

False advertising !!!

4 out of 5 stars Eye Opening Book for Truth Seekers.......2004-03-29

This book touches on topics that most will not dare tread, it's not for the faint hearted or fearful of what others may think. It's thought provoking and though I'm still chewing on some of the ideas and explainations presented, many of my questions were answered. Once reading this book, you will never look at things the same. It really is a life changing experience and satisfies that thirst for deeper knowledge of the lost truths that have been long oppressed, and points the way to find out for yourself, you don't have to take Rick's word for it. Even if a reader doesn't agree with everything presented, it will make the reader ponder and seek for himself what God has to say about such things and draw his own conslusions. I would recommend it for sure but only for the real seekers of God's truth.

5 out of 5 stars A X-File Christian book.......2003-11-08

Return of the Stargods reveals how the ancient alien gods of old will soon return to establish a New World Order of satanism. The book also takes the reader though the Bible showing a vast amount of scriptures that the churches ignore or will not deal with. Scriptures reveal that there is a fifth column that lives among us that are working against God's children in establishing a New World Order as an ultimate goal. They are the ones among us that are waiting for their father to return to them as the beast who will crush all opposition to his rule. But this will not take place until the Rapture of the church takes place first.

The Bible is also very clear that a government of fallen angels now runs this earth. They run all aspects of our matrix reality and remain hidden behind a shadow government. There are strong indications in scripture that here is also royalty of non-humans called the Reptilians and Nephilim that rule over us. They are the ones that have come from hell to transform themselves into rulers of this world. The Return of the Stargods explains all this strangeness by using scripture, and not just opinions and hearsay.

This book is very deep, and not meant for shallow Christians that believe in Church doctrine and not Bible doctrine. This book is a must for those Christians that want a deeper understaning of endtimes and spiritual warfare. It will teach you how to see all the people around us for what they really are so that we can best protect ourselves from these predators. Return of the Stargods is an introduction to the reality that lies outside the religious matrix. If you are a discerning Christian who regards scripture as the final authority and not church, then this book is a must read! -Author-

Book Description

The Telos book engages you in a communication from Earth's Interior. The book presents series of timely and fascinating messages from the people of the Hollow Earth and from the Golden City of Telos situated beneath Mt. Shasta, CA.

Telos is an ancient Lemurian City of Light that is real and exists to this day in the physical realm, underneath Mt. Shasta. Meet Adama, the High Priest of Telos, as he describes the kind of earthly paradise they have forged for themselves as they raised their consciousness to let go of all violence and negativity. Because they have moved into a consciousness of total love and true Brotherhood, it has been possible for them to survive until now from the time of the sinking of the continent of Lemuria. They have created Heaven on Earth for themselves in their underground cities, and throughout the Hollow Earth. They are looking forward to be coming out, when we are ready, to teach us how to do the same here on the surface.

This book brings magic for all those of you seeking to discover your ancient roots and heritage. This book will re-open your mind and heart to the great possibilities and wonders that are awaiting us on the surface when we finally let go of the old paradigm of duality and violence, and turn to Love and true Brotherhood for all. This book brings all of us so much hope for a better and easier life here on this planet.

Explore the rich family life of the people from the lost continent of Lemuria, who have been underground for the past 12,000 years, and who, due to their isolation from the surface population, have created a civilization of peace and abundance with no sickness, aging or death. They have mastered immortality in physical expression.

Read about the Advanced Civilizations that live in peace and brotherhood in the Center of our Earth, which is Hollow, and contains numerous physical cities of Light, its own inner Central Sun, with oceans and mountains still in their pristine state. Vividly and heroically, Telos delivers a very clear understanding of what is required on the surface to create a prosperous society and a healthy environment. The Telosians, along with many other spiritually advanced civilizations, are very real inside the Earth. They are coming forward at this time to inspire us to follow in their footsteps.

5 out of 5 stars great read.......2007-10-07

The time is now! This book is a gentle reminder of the world we can co-create when we earth humans work together for the common good of all. It provides a glimpse into a "utopian" society living in peace, harmony and beauty inside our planet. These beings, who emigrated inside Mother Earth before the destruction of Lemuria, reside in 3rd, 4th and 5th dimensional consciousness. The knowledge articulated in a loving manner from Adama and Mikos through Dianne conveys a message of hope and renewal. These beings look forward to a time fast-approaching when our planet will ascend reuniting our two cultures and making possible a reality of great beauty, abundance and love.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2006-02-22

My mind is still reeling. Again, this is another one of those books that isn't for everyone; that is, unless they are open-minded and capable of seeing beyond the five senses. The earth is obviously going through some major changes, and it is in our best interest to attempt to understand them beyond the horse manure that passes for news on mainstream TV.

For those who are ready for the next step in evolution -- and if one believes in evolution at all, there is inevitably a next step -- this book is a doorway to the heavens. Open it at your own risk. It will change the way you think...about everything.

1 out of 5 stars hmmmm... it doesnt seem real.......2004-05-16

a work of illuminati misinformation the refrain over and over was when you are ready we will be available. far too much space was devoted to how screwed up the enviornment is but very little if anything on how we can clean it up. It was thoroughly diappointing.

1 out of 5 stars the premise is found wanting.......2004-04-21

The premise of the book is disturbing. Any book which tries to pass itself off as a spiritual guide and offers the beings which dwell below as models must have alot to answer. All spirits were originally created good, some rebelled against their creator and decieve humans with a false "light". Could these be the dwellers beneath? What make us so more advanced than the medieval European theologians who also agreed that the earth is hollow, and not filled with cities of light, but rather with cities of the damned and the apostate angels? This is not negativity, only speculation, for reality is not always nice, and the truth can be painful.

5 out of 5 stars Earth is going through a complete change........2004-01-11

This book Channeled by Robbins presents one of the most outstanding revelations for mankind at the present time; and shockingly this time from Earth's interior.

The details from this unusual work surprised me: that there are millions down there, in Telos and in the Inner Earth, that they have a central sun, a rich, healthy glorious fauna and flora complete with oceans and mountains still in their pristine state.

I am familiar with the story of Shamballa and knew that something peculiar was going on within Mount Shasta but there was no straightforward message from anyone from down there.

Adama, Of the city of telos within Shasta, and Mikos describe a paradise a Shangri-La type where evil is totally unknown.

This fantastic human dreamland must be understood in its emotional and spiritual signification, where love for life and nature, and honesty reign supreme.

In order to maintain their endless spiritual progression Telosians must help us in our spiritual liberation and emotional progression.

It's up to you - if this appeals to you in any way, you should probably give it a read. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars It's Time For The Truth.......2007-01-09

I must start of by saying this book is absolutely incredible. From the second you begin to read it, you feel the love and positive energy from the true author...Mikos, a great being from the hollow earth. It truly is time for those on earth to become aware of what the universe really has in store. There are more life forms than us here on earth (they are actually in the earth, which is what the book is about).

I recommend that everyone reads this book and please open your mind. A closed mind only shows stupidity and fear of advancing into a great civilization. We must raise our consciousness and become aware of the truth and what a better way to start than with this book. I can say I was truly sad for the 1st time in my life when I finished this book.

1 out of 5 stars Popular Nuttiness for Hollow Minds.......2005-03-07

This book is a tribute to so many people's penchant for wackiness. One of my friends of over thirty years, a retired Continental Airlines pilot, has long been a believer in the hollow-earth concept, surely one of the few most screwball ideas of all time, especially nonsensical for anyone who has achieved any education in astronomy and/or geology. Robbins spins interesting tales about intelligent beings inside our "hollow earth" in the way that J. K. Rowling spins tales about Harry Potter and Hogwarts academy, except that Rowling's readers know that she is writing fiction.

5 out of 5 stars One Mind, One Earth,.......2004-01-21

This book received telepathically by Dianne Robbins, is in fact a mind-boggling and optimistic revelation for us, from the Inner Earth.

Mikos, head of the porthologos Library in Catharia, says that library is a conscious location, the basis and source of information, and live history for all planets of the universe including Earth.

The details are astonishing, that there are millions down there, the presence of a central sun, a rich, glorious fauna and flora complete with oceans and mountains.

Most of us have heard about Shambhala, and Mount Shasta but there was not any straightforward message from anyone down there, except some sporadic revelations, (See Secrets From Mount Shasta)

Mikos describes what appears to be a fantastic paradise comparable to Shangri-La a place based on Love. Within that paradise, integrity, and harmony with the Earth, are supreme in concept, and in conduct.

This is an opportunity to contact others interested in promoting unity on Earth.

"The Hollow Earth", Raymond Bernard - the classic and fully distributed - published first in the 1960's - is in every geology section of your neighborhood or university library. Does God have a great sense of humor or what? If you want to have a great introduction to the Hollow Earth that hits the high spots of this controversial subject - read this book.

4 out of 5 stars The book is a good reality check on humanity's mental health.......1997-06-17

This book may either be the work of an unsung hero, a completely derranged lunatic or a very original designer who takes scientific and historical facts and custom-makes them at his own convenience. He tries to convince using circus-like hypnotic techniques, like constant repetition of the same facts, guilt trips, and a constant between the line reminder to the reader that says: If you don't believe this, you're really stupid. I'd say the book is good to read anytime you need a reality check on humanity's mental state. It's always good to know exactly how messed up your neighboor's head could be

This book was awsome! I loved how suspensful and thrilling it was! I just couldn't put it down! I would recomend this book to people who love an adventure!

4 out of 5 stars Rather quite British.......2002-03-03

Actually, I think this book deserves three and a half stars. The plot was excellent. I looked forward to reading about Indiana Jones exploring the inner earth and finding a race of "supermen", but as so often happens in fiction books, small details get missed that cause the book not to be as good as would have been had these details not been overlooked. First of all, everyone who's seen the Indiana Jones Trilogy well knows that Indiana Jones is a rather crusty, if intelligent character. This book, however, presents him in such a way that I expect he should be eating scones with Earl Grey tea. His vocabulary in the book was definitely more British than American (why, I wonder?). Actually I found the dialog for most of the characters, well...rather out of character. Secondly, I was dismayed at the poor German used in the book. For example, the author has an SS man using the word "javolt". The correct word is "jawohl". Additionally, the author mistranslates the SS motto by stating that it means "my honor is pure" rather than "my honor is loyalty". A quick look at a German dictionary would have done the trick. It was still a fun story even though it stretched credibility in these areas.

5 out of 5 stars Hard Nosed and Action Packed.......2001-08-14

Max McCoy is the best author yet for Indiana Jones. When I read one of his books I feel like I'm watching the movie. This book has a lot of action and a wonderful plot. I especially like the part in Edda's shaft. With the warriors and..... If you like Indiana Jones stories read this book to find out what happens!

I find this game reminiscent of Feng Shui, one of my favorite games of all time, but with a great 1930's pulp feel. The other reviewers covered the content pretty well so I won't repeat it. 4 out of 5 stars Pulp Role-Playing the way it should be........2007-06-05

Synopsis:
Hollow Earth Expedition (HEX) is pulp RPG set in a world where dinosaurs, beastmen, and lost civilizations are real. HEX is overall a very impressive game. The production values, writing, and concept are all top notch. As impressive as it is, HEX also has some minor short comings.

Review:
Setting:

If you like pulp then you will likely love HEX's setting. In HEX the Earth is hollow (duh!) and many things that were once lost are found to still exist. Some examples are Atlantis, Dinosaurs, Beastmen, and powerful artifacts.

So by now you might be thinking about how in the heck you would get inside Hollow Earth. Well, there are openings scattered all over the planet. Most of the entrances to Hollow Earth are places that in the real world have some sort of mythic feel to them. You can get in through the Polar Openings, Bermuda Triangle, and other obscure places.

Once you are in everything changes. Magnetic fields keep compasses and radios from working and time moves at snails pace. Native people (cargo cultists, noble savages, and Cannibals) make up the human population in Hollow Earth. However people sometimes get to hollow earth in strange ways and there even pirates in blood bay. Besides the human population there are also many monstrous creatures like Lizardmen, Hyaenodons, and saber-toothed tigers. Not to mention the vegetation, might try to kill you.

The setting is great. You could easily play any style pulp game you want with HEX. If you want emulate the novels of Burroughs, Carter, de Camp and the like, this is the game for you.

System:

Character generation is quick and easy. HEX uses archetypes, which helps simplify and speed up chargen. Some of the archetypes are Criminal, Explorer, Hunter, Occultist, and Soldier. A point buy method is used to generate stats and skills. One highlight about the character generation is the Motivation. Motivation is just like it sounds; it gives the player and GM a cue as to how to involve the character in the game. When a player properly plays out his motivation the GM awards him style points which can be exchanged for bonus dice on any role.

The main system is a simple dice pool system. Basically you add your stat plus skill plus any modifiers. The total is the number of dice you roll. Even die results are successes, so as you might suspect, you can use any type of die (d6,d8,d10,d12, and d20) you want as long as they are all dice rolled are the same type. Combat works with the attacker rolling (for ranged attacks) dex plus firearms or archery plus weapon strength and the target rolling his defense dice. If the attacker rolls more successes, he hits the target and deals one point of damage for each success rolled in excess of the targets defense successes. It's that simple. Now as simple and "rules lite" as that might sound hex also has many subsystems that can add more detailed and/or cinematic game play, like called shots, total attack, auto fire, and flurry. The system is definitely on the lighter side but it won't leave most people wanting for more. I really like the system and it seems like it could be adapted to for other applications.

The down side though is (as minor as it is) that magic and sorcery are mentioned briefly in the book, there are no rules or suggestion on how to handle them. From what I understand there is supplement in the works that covers magic, so I guess will have to wait.

Production Values:

HEX is a 252 page hardcover with a mainly B/W interior (the archetype pages are color), with a full index and character sheet.

Along with the setting and system, the production values are out standing. The cover are is some the better art I have seen on an RPG book in quite some time and the interior are is also of good quality. Most of all the art suits the feel of the book well and complements the setting. The inside cover has a nice color map of the world showing all of the entrances to Hollow Earth. The page layout is very tight and clean, every inch of space is used and none wasted. Due to the tight layout the HEX seems to have more content than books of the same length but more wasted space.

My one complaint on the production values is the fact that there was no map of the Hollow Earth included. This may have been done intentionally to leave the setting as open as possible but I would still like to have some reference to places mentioned in the book.

Conclusion:

If you have been looking for a pulp game HEX is well worth a look. The price is $39.99 which is pretty much the standard price for a hardcover RPG. In buying HEX you will definitely be getting a game published with higher standards than many games published these days.

5 out of 5 stars SUPERB PULP ADVENTURE GAME SET IN THE HOLLOW EARTH.......2007-05-29

This game was nominated by Origin for "Best Roleplaying game in 2007".

I just played it at Kublacon 2007 and had a great time.

Okay. So what's this game all about?

Think of pulp action stories.

If that doesn't ring a bell, think if movies like INDIANA JONES, JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, ROCKETEER, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, DOC SAVAGE, DICK TRACY, KING KONG, JURASSIC PARK, AT THE EARTH'S CORE, THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT, LOST HORIZON, SHE, THE SHADOW, LAND OF THE LOST, TALES OF THE GOLD MONKEY, YOUNG INDIANA JONES and THE TIME MACHINE. Or, think of authors like Edgar Rice Burroughs, Jules Verne, H.P. Lovecraft, Philip Jose Farmer, H.G. Wells and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

You get the idea.

Action is meant to be fast and furious (you can use special dice that quicken the game), characters are always bigger than life, the villains are meant to also be bigger than life and extra evil (think black and white morality here which means lots of Nazis), the unbelievable becomes believable, science and magic/occult cross paths, dinosaurs walk the Hollow Earth with other types of long past creatures, history can be used or made into an alternative world (i.e. setting is typically early 1900s), various areas still remain unexplored (and are therefore ripe for holding the unknown) and, while Hollow Earth is the main setting, there's enough information here to do something different or even have adventures set in the surface world.

What about characters? Think of fun archetypes from the movies (some here are listed in the core book): Indiana Jones, a cowboy, a big game hunter (who is bored with lions and wants to kill dinosaurs), a curious female reporter (in a man's world and out to prove she's the best), a snooty know it all professor, a dying rich industrialist (looking for the fountain of youth to cure him of his cancer or other disease), a peaceful missionary, a mad scientist, the imperiled actress, the fortune hunter, etc. All have special reasons for desiring to explore Hollow Earth.

I would say the characters are balanced enough, especially if the GM doesn't make it all combat. Most of the characters start not with similar skill levels, of course, but with similar enough ability point distribution (and you can only go so high or low when picking your stats), so, when I played it, even the weakest characters had a fighting chance (though this was based more on surviving than wiping out a more powerful enemy).

Last on characters, there's a good spread of advantages and disadvantages in this game, as well as enough skills and sub specialties to make it interesting for a long term campaign.

Three special highlights of the game come to mind:

1. FLAWS: a flaw is something you play up in the game, like being overconfident in your field or stubborn to the point of it working against you or being a danger magnet (i.e. you attract bad things or go out seeking them). When you play this properly, you get a style point (see number 2).

2. STYLE POINTS: style points can absorb damage, increase your skill ability, sometimes affect the story, give you more of a chance of success in combat or be up to the GM for other matters. One basically gets it for playing their flaws properly, pursuing your motivation, being in character and/or adding to the quality of the game.

3. CHANCE DICE: when the chips are down and you're about to die or get into a very bad situation, you can call on more dice to increase your chances. The only problem is that the number of dice you select makes the obstacle harder to accomplish. As the chance is typically 5-10%, you really only want to use this if you are truly desperate.

OTHER NOTES: this game lets you take your average roll as a default to rolling. Think of it like "taking 10/20" in D.20/D&D. Another thing, similar to D.20/D&D, is that you can use your soft attributes (like intelligence and dexterity, per D&D) in combat with the right talent/advantage that lets you. That's a nice touch for the smart or agile types.

What about knowing the setting? There's some chapters on understanding The Hollow Earth as well as what was taking place in the USA and other countries (focused mostly on 1936 but with some basic overviews back to the very late 1800s). There are special resources in Hollow Earth and there are several organizations on the surface world who want to get them. The big problem is that Hollow Earth is very hard to get to and even harder to leave.

The core book also starts you with NPC stats (villains and allies), a basic adventure, equipment (gotta love the "Tommy" submachine gun), and, of course, a bestiary (yes, it has a T-rex).

Keep in mind this is the first item out. They are coming out with a GM screen in the spring, a section for surface world adventures, more on the Hollow Earth and some other projects not yet officially announced.

Overall, this is a superb game for getting into the spirit of pulp. It does use Hollow Earth as its setting but it implies/lists other settings, and, with all the supplements coming out, GMs can run their games in other settings.

Now I just need to convince my players to buy the core books, as well as the special dice. Heh.
