What it was like for kids to live during World War II.......2004-01-29
"World War II for Kids: A History with 21 Activities" really has three key components. First, there is a history of World War II from Hitler's rise to power in 1933 to the surrender of the Japanese in 1945. Second, Richard Panchyk provides excerpts from actual wartime letters written to and by troops on both sides along with personal anecdotes from people who lived through the war. Finally, there are 21 activities that can show young readers how it felt to live through World War II, both on the battlefield and on the Home Front.
Actually, the first function is the least impressive part of "World War II for Kids," although Panchyk provides a solid history of the war. It is just that the personal writings and recollections, along with the activities, are where Panchyk goes beyond what you would find in your standard American history textbook, which is why this is an excellent supplemental volume. Teachers can certainly use the activities and quote from the letters found in this volume to give students more of a sense of what it was like to live during that time.
The 21 activities are fairly interesting and cover a variety of subjects. Some are fairly complex, such as substituting a potato for an incendiary bomb and following the instructions on how to extinguish it, or staging a radio adventure program, while others are relatively simply, such as drawing a recruiting poster. There is an exercise in code breaking, learning how to camouflage, making a ration kit, going on a reconnaissance mission, figuring oat a coastal defense, the physics of dropping bombs, and a game that helps demonstrate the difference between mortar and howitzer fire versus anti-tank and anti-aircraft fire. There are also "Home Front" activities like making a bandage, putting together a care package, growing a Victory Garden, sending V-Mail, and extending butter, as well as a couple of activities having to do with the Holocaust by making a Jewish star and trying to find good hiding places in your home for the student and an adult helper.
Obviously some of these activities are going to be more practical and more beneficial than others, but Panchyk has made an attempt to come up with different ways of giving his young readers an idea of what it was like for kids and adults during World War II. Again, while young readers can certainly read this book and try the activities on their own, "World War II for Kids" is even better suited as a resource for teachers to use when teaching the pivotal events of World War II. Comparing what life was like for their grandparents during that war as opposed to the rather limited impact on their lives today during the war on terrorism could be quite an eye opener for young readers.
7 year old loves this book.......2003-06-03
My 7 year old son is a WWII fanatic and loves this book. It discusses not only events in the war itself, but also the impact of the war on life in the U.S. The activities encourage kids to think about far-reaching effects of war, not just the exciting battles.

A Must for all Star Wars fans!.......2006-07-14
This book is the bomb! The art is amazing and facinates the imagination, the quality of the book is perfect, The cross-sections are the best and are getting bigger... and better than the last book and I can expect the next one to be the best of them all. Excellent job, Curtis J. Saxton. I am most pleased. Star Wars rules and may the force be with you!
P.S. This book is DEFINITLY WORTH The money! Bye!
Another great cross section book for Star Wars.......2005-09-14
I just recently received this book and all I can say is that it's the bomb! The pages are full of intricate details about both the vehicles and story of Episode II. The foldout of the Republic Dropship is definitely a highlight of the series. If you like Star Wars and want to know more than you can possibly imagine about Star Wars engineering, pick this book up right away.
Yeap Dad this is a good one........2003-09-11
Ep 2's turn to have it's spaceships and other craft pulled apart and exposed in all their glory. Once again the foldout format is still the best and great for childern and grownups alike.
great for kids!.......2003-06-14
really ignites a kid's imagination. i got this for my nephew and he loves it!
Another great Star Wars book!.......2002-08-18
This Star Wars Cross-sections book is a must-have for Star Wars fans. The detailed renderings of all the main vehicles in AOTC is as impressive as the companion for The Phantom Menace. The writer, Curtis Saxon, has obviously done a great deal of investigation for everything, with so many detailed drawings and fascinating notes. For curios of the inner workings of all the speeders and starships, this is indespensible. Great stuff.

Book Description
In the mid 1920's a teacher at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago had a vision to provide students and instructors with a textbook that would introduce them to the artistic legacy of not only Europe, but of the entire globe. In 1926, Harcourt Brace and Company published that vision - ART THROUGH THE AGES. Since that time, Helen Gardner's vision has been the leader in educating students about the artistic legacy of the world. For the past 75 years, ART THROUGH THE AGES has defined the introductory art history course. The intention of this classic, in Helen Gardner's words, has been "to introduce the reader to certain phases of art, architecture, painting, sculpture, and the minor arts from the remote days of the glacial age in Europe, through successive civilizations of the Near East, Europe, America, and the Orient, to the twentieth century." Now, as we begin a new millennium, we do so with the eleventh edition. This text is more accessible and easier to read for students, but does not compromise the richness of the Gardner tradition.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty Good Art Histoy book.......2007-03-09
Although the text covers quite a bit, I can't help but feel a bit annoyed in its arbitrary, and sometimes misleading use of chronology. For instance, Heironymus Bosch is covered in the 15th century nothern art chapter, when it seems to me he should be covered in the 16th century northern art chapter, along with Pieter Breugel and Dürer.
Of course this might be somewhat arbitrary too, but I can't help but be annoyed.
Still, despite this one little problem I have with the text, it is very comprehensive. The works are very well reproduced, and in color too, which is delightful.
I know this isn't a helpful review, but I'll conclude saying despite some disagreements I have with the organization of the text, it is still an award winning text and well written. Unlike other textbooks I have, I have no problem reading the chapters without falling asleep. This is a big big plus.
Gardner's Art Through the Ages, Volume II (Chapters 19-34).......2007-02-19
It came pretty quick and was in good condition.
An earlier edition second hand .......2006-11-25
I'm currently working my way through the 8th Ed of this book which I picked up second hand. I'm finding it to be a very good read - the passage of art through the ages is woven together well with the various "ism's" explained well. I'd consider this book to form the foundation of an art book collection, using it as a springboard in to more advanced/theoretical tomes. I have no idea what the 12th Edition contains but I would question having to pay $100 for a copy. Find a earlier edition, second hand and then grab a newer copy to see what new "ism's" have been added. I cannot imagine that the body of the main text has changed much, the most recent edition probably has greater coverage of the "Post-Modernism" and whatever is currently in vogue.
The Old-Soldier of Art History Texts never dies (unfortunately). . . ........2006-01-09
Gardners' has long been regarded as the rather stuffy "bible" of art history texts, mainly because of its commercial longevity (it's been around since the 1930s). Recent editions have suffered under recent editorship. The addition of tiresome "clever" subtitles, coupled with the creeping-in of a new shallower "touchy-feelie" approach to the exegesis of the artworks--no doubt intended to perk-up this withering old warhorse--are sad things to behold. Readers are well-advised to select instead the far superior ART HISTORY by MARILYN STOKSTAD. It is everything Gardners' used to be...and more.

Who can resist feeling cheerful when envisioning Julie Andrews singing "My Favorite Things" to her young charges in The Sound of Music? In fact, this song by the incredibly successful, award-winning (34 Tony Awards, 15 Academy Awards, 2 Pulitzer Prizes, 2 Grammy Awards, and an Emmy Award) musical team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II has become as familiar as any nursery rhyme to many children during the more than 40 years since it was written. And now, with the warm, cozy illustrations by Renée Graef (illustrator of E.T.A. Hoffman's The Nutcracker, adapted by Janet Schulman), children can enjoy the delicious images and lilting notes of the classic song any time. Each illustration is framed with a folksy rustic border, and portrays a happy family in an idyllic rural setting enjoying "raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens" and "doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles" all year round. And if the raindrops on roses look ever so faintly like aphids, well, the "bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens" on the following page should more than make up for it. Naturally, the book comes complete with the score of "My Favorite Things," so families can sing or play along to their hearts' content. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

Child's Favorite Book!.......2007-02-06
This was my favorite song when I was a little girl so when I saw this book, I knew I had to have it! It has now become my 5 year old daughter's favorite book and she asks (or should I say demands) me to read it to her every night. She knows all the words and sings along as we look at the beautifully illustrated pictures. This book even has the sheet music at the back of the book! I highly recommend purchasing this item.
My favorite things.......2006-03-15
I'm an infant/toddler childcare teacher. My Favorite Things, is a beautifully illustrated book. It captures the wonder and sweetness of one of the best songs in the move, "The Sound of Music". I sing this book to my little ones. It captures their attention better than reading it.
My girls & I all LOVE this book they are 2 & 4 and I am 38!.......2003-07-08
Illustrations are like soft memories and evoke warm thoughts of childhood and this song. I believe this book works VERY well for young and older children. I love the sublty of imagery in clouds at end of book when children are staring up at sky imagining "favorite things". Both my two and 4 year old can sing this song now. Words and music are included in back to make this a BONUS for anyone musically inclined. A must have for anyone who likes the song!
Add This To Your List of Favorite Things.......2001-11-21
I discovered this book only a few days after watching a rerun of the wonderful movie "The Sound of Music." This book really enhances the beautiful lyrics of the song from that movie called "My Favorite Things" with lovely, heartfelt illustrations filled with nostalgia and the innocence of children. The colors glow with soft light and scenes are either set in cozy, homey environments or in serene natural settings. The lyrics and music are printed at the back of the book so you can play it on the piano for your children or just sing it to them as you go along. My children are all grown up and no grandkids yet, so I know from experience that it's quite alright to sing it to yourself, too! This is a delightful book.
Fun to read, Fun to sing.......2001-09-15
I'm a mom of few known lullabys. This song I knew and sang it to my infant daughter many times in the middle of the night. I was delighted to find this book. I love to sing the song as we page through the lovely illustrations. My daughter always relates to when 'the bee stings' and the girl is sad and getting a hug from Mom. This is a book I can read more than once, even after a busy day in toddlerhood. My daughter is starting to sing the song on her own now, which is adorable and rewarding. My husband likes this book too.

A Great Study Guide.......2007-06-20
This book was recommended to me by an art teacher and it is excellent, showing a chronological history of art with great images. A great reference.
My favorite art book. .......2005-05-09
Gardner's seperates the chapters in this book into regions, cultures and era's.
It includes cultural context informaion essential to understanding art and architecture. There are two ways to explore a piece of art: (1) analyzing the technique and (2) understanding the purpose. Like modern day song lyrics, many pieces of art and architecture were created for some type of political purpose. This book not only discusses the technological advancements in art and architecture, but shows the influences behind the creation of the pieces.
Love this book.......2001-05-22
I let someone borrow my ninth edition and my friend lost it. So I got the tenth edition. I love it. It gives breif history on the popular artists. It gives enough background so you are able to use it for references. I'm not an art major, but I really love the fact that it compiles many artists together. I was at the bookstore and I was looking at individual artist's books. That was when I realized how much I love this book. All the great stuff are in here.
I was introduced by my art history class. But now it's a hobbie to just read up on it.

Looking back at history without blinkers.......2006-06-30
In this book, Richard Maybury attempts to present a point of view of historical events which are linked to the rise of Nazi Germany and later, World War II. Without condoning his excesses in any way, Maybury shows that it was the political circumstances of the times that created the egregious nature of the Hitler that we know. And the same circumstances that led to the making of a Hitler, are present in today's society in good measure. And that we are to be forewarned by hindsight.
Certainly Hitler was no angel. However, as Maybury shows, neither were Winston Churchill or Franklin Delano Roosevelt. In order to contain Hitler, they ended up siding with Stalin, who was one of the worst murderers in human history, displaying clearly through actual facts and figures, exactly who was responsible for more lives lost. Maybury debunks the widely accepted theory that Hitler was the only megalomaniac the world has ever known and that the Allies (the proverbial good guys) were forced to do what they did (carpet bombing) in order to extinguish him in the larger interest of the world. He shows that the number of civilian lives lost on account of Allied activity in Germany, was in fact, far greater. He goes on to show that the Allied military machinery was so much more precise, so much more well- oiled and so much more powerful. This point is illustrated by using the analogy of a wolf against a lion. The wolf (in this case it is Hitler) can have the initial advantage over a sleeping lion (the Allies), but never, a final victory.
Besides putting across a totally new and refreshingly original perspective on historical events, Maybury makes some interesting conjectures. One question, for instance, Japan was ready to surrender after Hiroshima. Was the Nagasaki bomb needed? Why was it deployed? Another question is about Pearl Harbour. Was it planned (by the Americans)? Did the Japanese walk into a trap? What was the real motive of the Allied powers? World Domination? All these questions are increasingly valid today.
Of course, all the conjectures need not be valid, and our so called heroes, leaders and statesmen (no women, unfortunately) possibly had a little more greatness or courage in them than Maybury gives them credit for. However, isn't it high time that the widely accepted version of history and historical events presented in school textbooks is publicly questioned, so that these legendary figures are not made into the kind of idols which they are made out to be?
Read this book with an open mind. It will make you think. It will shatter a few illusions. But you will feel the stench of truth.
oh no, another anti-government book.......2006-02-07
If you are a homeschooler with a deep mistrust of your government, then this is the book for you. I make that statement as a homeschooling mother, myself. The basic premise of the book may have a small amount of credibility,(yes, Stalin murdered lots of people, too.)But to make outrageous claims like, "The Jewish Holocaust gets the publicity because it is regarded as the justification for Jews to have a Jewish State (Israel) in the Mideast." (pg. 36), and, concerning Pearl Harbor, "Few are willing to face the possibility that the President and his cronies planned it all." (pg. 162), really show the author's bias.
In short, if you are looking for a book with facts and the whys and wherefores of WWII--this ain't it! Look somewhere else.
absurd view sprinkled with real facts.......2005-10-11
The premise of this ridiculous book is that the U.S. should not have fought World War 2 because Stalin was worse than Hitler. Book might impress some grammer school children who have not studied much history, but will not be taken seriously by anyone that has any real knowledge of the subject or is not a neo-nazi crazy person.
You, yes, you!.......2004-12-21
Hey you, yes, you. You gotta read this book! Its all that the positive reviews say it is. A real eye opener on the real motivations for all those wars of choice undertaken in what turned out to be the pursuit of economic interests.
Amazing how the tales of valor we have all grown up with, written by the victors, collides in the fullness of time with what turns out to be documented facts.
If we only knew beforehand, eh?
Mary Mueller is prejudiced.......2004-10-19
Before I bought this book, I read librarian Mary Mueller's original review of it. I was particularly interested in her comment (which has since been removed from her review), "He makes numerous other outrageous claims, which he supports with historical scholarship that is questionable at best...."
So I found her contact information at the school where she works and emailed her about her comment, asking her what she meant about the author's "questionable" scholarship. She wrote back saying, "Maybury uses sources that could best be described as fringe, and they are not sources that are published by mainstream publishers or university presses."
Well, I bought the book anyway, and I learned that Ms Mueller's remarks were highly prejudiced. Maybury's sources were researchers who had combed through U.S. Government records released under the Freedom of Information Act. In other words, in Ms. Mueller's view, the U.S. Government's records can't be trusted because they're neither "mainstream" nor "university." What a crock!
Interestingly enough, after I bought the book, I revisited Amazon and found that Ms. Mueller had changed her review, removing the damning passage and replacing it with a broad-based rejection of Maybury's political viewpoint. At least she realized that she was wrong then. Too bad she doesn't realize she's wrong now, too!
The Uncle Eric books are generally good, and the viewpoint they provide is desperately needed in this country. My only complaint is that they're very repetitive, often duplicating the same arguments verbatim. It's as if the author simply copied-and-pasted whole sections of previous paragraphs and chapters. I'd have given the book five stars instead of four if the author hadn't resorted to this dumbing down tactic.
Still, this book is well-worth reading.
Book Description
One of the most important naval battles in history, Midway marked a crucial turning point in the war in the Pacific. With a fleet that had dominated this theater since the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese anticipated certain victory against the US forces. Outgunned and under strength, the US Navy nevertheless had superior intelligence that cracked the code well before the battle's onset: the Japanese ambush did not come as a surprise. From July 4-7, 1942, the US dealt a devastating blow to the Imperial Japanese Fleet, sinking four irreplaceable aircraft carriers, and clearing the way for the island-hopping US counterattack. Characterized by espionage, daring, luck, and extreme heroism on both sides, the story of Midway is vividly retold in compelling graphic novel format. This book also includes eight pages of authoritative information, placing the battle in its historical context, describing the key players, and its build-up and aftermath.
