A Must Read.......2006-07-14
Colonel Archibald Gracie was on board the Titanic when it sank. He was one of the lucky men who was able to cling to a capsized boat for survival. He details his account of the crossing, both before and after the iceberg. He mentions many people that he spoke with on the voyage, hoping to bring comfort to any families whose loved ones he encountered. The book seems to have been a form of therapy for the man and also an attempt to help those with questions after the sinking.
The book is written in 1912 language, but it is still very readable and easy to understand. It is really an excellent resource for specific information; Gracie examines each lifeboat individually with passenger's names (except for the 3rd class) and relays incidents from each compiled from testimony from those in each boat. He uses official documents like the court trial transcripts for his book, making it very credible.
Also included is a short account of John Thayer from the 40s. He was only 17 when the ship sank and lost his father of the same name in the tragedy. Thayer was another of the men clinging to the capsized boat that saved Gracie's life. His testimony enforces many of the things said by Gracie.
Vivid & Meticulous Firsthand Account of Disaster.......2003-03-30
Colonel Archibald Gracie is one of the few people who actually went down with the Titanic and lived to tell about it. First published in 1913, "Titanic" is his detailed account of the last day he spent aboard ship, the evacuation of passengers on the port side of the ship, and of his incredible survival on an overturned lifeboat after being plunged into the frigid ocean when the Titanic finally completely submerged. The first 113 pages of the book are dedicated to Colonel Gracie's firsthand account. In the remaining approximately 200 pages, Col. Gracie has compiled testimony from as many other eyewitnesses as he could find. These firsthand accounts of passengers and crew are taken from the official inquiries in the United States and Great Britain, personal correspondence and interviews with Col. Gracie, and occasionally from firsthand accounts that were published in books and magazines of the day. Taken together, they render a very detailed picture of what went on that fateful night and why more people were not saved. Colonel Gracie died 8 months after the Titanic sank, of illness possibly related to the prolonged exposure to cold that he endured the night the Titanic went down.
This is one of the most comprehensive and precise accounts of the Titanic disaster that you will find. Colonel Gracie is an engaging storyteller. I like his decision to organize the eyewitness accounts by lifeboat. The book also provides some interesting insights into the manners and social attitudes of the time.
Still a very readable account of the Titanic disaster.......2000-06-02
Originally published in 1913 as The Truth About the Titanic, Titanic: A Survivor's Story was the first book by an actual Titanic survivor to appear in print. Colonel Archibald Gracie, a military historian who is treated really brutally by James Cameron in his film, was not only a brave man but an indefatigable historian of the disaster. In the months remaining to him after the sinking (Colonel Gracie died in December 1912, possibly of aftereffects from his harrowing escape), Gracie tracked down other survivors and was the first to make an attempt at putting each survivor into the boat he or she escaped from. Written with period charm, this is an important book about the disaster and will dispell any remaining images of Cameron's doofy "Archie."
Poignant pairing of contrasting accounts of the same tragedy.......1998-11-27
Two of the most poignant survivor accounts of the Titanic sinking. Mr. Gracie, an elderly man with many social ties to others on the ship and Mr. Thayer, the 17 year old son of a prominent businessman were both first class passengers. Both nearly drowned as the Titanic plunged to the bottom of the Atlantic; but found refuge on the upside down collapsible lifeboat B. Mr. Gracie lost his best friend and Mr. Thayer lost his father. The grief each feels still calls out to us.
The style of each narrative is interesting to compare. Gracie, when describing his own experience or his impressions of the significance of the sinking, uses the flowing purple prose of the late 19th century (his style is more straightforward in his compilations of accounts of other passengers and he has even used their actual statements). Thayer, writing in 1940 about his own experience, is terser; but his reflection that the world seemed calm and his place in it assured before that night is poetic. Archibald Gracie died soon after he wrote his narrative. I'm unsure; but I believe Jack Thayer did not live long after he wrote his story. Since Mr. Thayer's account is not generally available in other sources, and Mr. Gracie was so thorough about who was in (or, in his case, on) each lifeboat, this book will be appreciated by any Titanic buff.
Excelent example of a survivor's account.......1998-08-24
I read this book at first to establish some truths about this great story. I feel that it had become a far fetched story of modern times , with all the romantic films and books available today. I came away from reading this book with a sense of great loss. Gracie, has spent a short time explaining the everyday bustle of those on board and at least 300 pages about how the ship sank and who was involved it what.
A truly fantastic read ,and one that has inspired me to read more on the subject. Thanks Archibald !!!!

SIXTEEN boats were in the procession which entered on the terrible hours of rowing, drifting and suspense. Women wept for lost husbands and sons, sailors sobbed for the ship which had been their pride. Men choked back tears and sought to comfort the widowed. Perhaps, they said, other boats might have put off in another direction. They strove, though none too sure themselves, to convince the women of the certainty that a rescue ship would appear.

The Sinking of the Titanic and Great Sea Disasters.......2007-01-04
Very good reprint of the original book. I own the original, but it is in very poor condition, so this reprint allows me to read the book as printed in 1912, without further damaging the orginal. Definitely a good value.
Rebirth through a Reprint.......2000-08-12
Because I have an original copy of this book from 1912, I was especially interested when I saw that it had been reprinted. I'm not sure why it took so long for me to know it was reprinted, but I just found out and bought it. My initial fascination with this grand ship was sparked by this very book, and lives on today. I have many Titanic books, and though I appreciate color, nothing can top this original. It's one of my favorites!
The Sinking of the Titanic and Great Sea Disasters.......2000-01-12
A truly wonderful but heartbreaking true story upon story told by eyewitnesses. No talking heads building it up all out of proportion that we"re so full of today. So little is mentioned today of the fact that this ship was on fire {coal bunkers} when it sailed. I own an original copy and am curious as to it"s value?
The book is great.......1999-09-27
I really enjoyed this book. I have always been interested in the Titanic I have one of the original books that has been in my family all these years and was always hearing about the titantic and now the book belongs to me. It is a 5 star book.
Awesome book!!.......1999-05-03
This is a very great book. You won't be able to put it down. The insights into what really happened that night in April will keep you reading the book in one sitting!

Fascinating Reproduction!.......2003-03-17
Great glimpse into the attitudes of the time...even the typeface, factual errors and misspellings add to the dramatic documentation of the stunned and outraged reactions to the sinking of the great RMS TITANIC. Will be especially enjoyed by TITANIC scholars and enthusiastis who now know the "real" story of her sinking...these personal, tragic tales will greatly enhances anyone's technical knowledge and interest in that Night to Remember!
Origins of Titanic Myths.......2000-09-23
This reproduction of a contemporary publication is an interesting artifact that illustrates the exploitation of the Titanic disaster by the press at this time. It also demonstrates how much of the mythology about the Titanic got started. If you want to learn as much about the truth as can be learned about happened that night the transcripts of the American and British hearings are far superior as are the better organized and accurate accounts by survivors including Mr. Beesley, second cabin passenger and Col. Gracie, first cabin passenger.
Sinking of the Titanic.......2000-07-02
I recently acquired a copy of the original book. Can you tell me how much that might be worth please? It is a wonderful book. The cover is not in mint condition! Thank you!
Dover does it again!.......2000-04-01
I'm glad that Dover publishes these replica editions, because it would be nearly impossible to find this material elsewhere. These accounts, straight from the survivors, are important to those of us that study the Titanic, and should be shared with the public at large.

A Haunting and absorbing history.......2006-05-21
Although this book is supposedly about the sinking and finding of the Titanic the true story in this book is about the effect the Titanic has had on all those who have been in contact with her. Charles Pellegrino's emotional narrative on both the sinking and the discovery of this special ship keep this from being just another dry documentary. Of special intrest (especially in retrospect) is his description of how anyone who has come in contact with her (Titanic) has had their life altered by the experience. Remember this book was written BEFORE the James Cameron blockbuster and look at the effect Titanic has had on his life. Recommended for anyone who is a Titanic buff.
A most interesting book.......1998-02-05
Mr. Pellegrino has written an excellent book about that tragic ship and about the background of the men who found her. A must have for any serious TITANIC "buff". It is also a great companion book to Dr. Ballards "Dicovery of the TITANIC" as it offers insights not contained in his book.

Product Description
t was ten minutes past midnight, April 15, 1912. The giant new luxury liner TITANIC lay dead in the water. Half an hour earlier, her watch officer had spotted a growler in her track and taken evasive action. TITANIC had struck a glancing blow on her starboard bow---a collision that should not have been fatal. Many ships had limped into port after such a collision with ice. But TITANIC's life depended upon one transverse, watertight bulkhead, and it had been damaged by a fire in an adjacent coal bunker. Her designer, aboard to check her maiden voyage performance inspected that bulkhead. His prediction was grim, as he projected it to last a mere hour, if that. On the bridge of a nearby ship the master stared through his night glasses at faint white, flashes on the horizon. His wireless operator had caught the White Star Liner's call for help only minutes earlier. The master had given orders to prepare to aid the British ship. But what aid might she need? She had sent no internationally recognized distress signal, by wireless or by rocket. He ordered his wireless operator to contact TITANIC and ask again what help was needed. In moments, the operator arrived breathless on the bridge. "He says we are fools." D.E. Bristow's book plunges the reader back into 1912 to discover how a massive cover-up at the TITANIC inquiries hid the truth about the accident from the public. Conclusions, which originated with the natural necessity to protect TITANIC's owners from financial loss, have been perpetuated without regard for the facts by those who know nothing of the sea or ships. The real scandal of TITANIC lies not with the original cover-up, but with the perpetuation of it in the decades of misguided theorizing when the facts were known in 1912.

A must have for people interested in the Titanic........1999-06-08
This is not your run of the mill book about the Titanic. It offers new insights as to why the ship sank so quickly and why ships close by did not go to the the aid of the sinking Titanic. Excellent research and documentation. Every Titanic buff must get this book. I have read over 14 books on the Titanic and this is one of the top two or three.
The most intelligent explanation for the disaster.......1997-11-01
Throw away all your other Titanic theory books. TITANIC: SINKING THE MYTHS is the only book I have ever read on the subject that actually explains why people behaved the way they did before and during the TITANIC disaster. Sorry, there are no 'conspiracies' here; Ms. Bristow, an ex-stewardess and friend of many sea captains, enumerates the instances of arrogance, stupidity, and shortsightedness that led to the unnecessary loss of 1522 lives. For the fact is, everyone on the ship could have been saved. By looking at the people's behaviour IN THE CONTEXT OF THEIR TIME Ms. Brisow explains what seem (to a 1990's reader) inexplicable actions. A long-forgotten shipwreck (to us, but not to the particpants in the TITANIC drama) influenced the behaviour of the radio men and probably of the ship's owner, Bruce Ismay, during the disaster. The famous Mystery Ships (two of them) were never a mystery at all; their names come straight from the records of the British Inquiry into the disaster and have been 'hid in plain sight' for 85 years. Ms. Bristow's analysis of company policy for steamships of that era and of the skulduggery behind the formation of the Marconi Company (one of the VILLAINS of the piece!) make fascinating reading. Her arguments are extremely convincing. The author's weaknesses include a tendency to repeat herself, and a noticeable resentment toward the "Titanic Establishment", whatever that is; they apparently don't countenance her arguments in any way. Still, they make sense, which is more than some other TITANIC-theory books do. The causes of the disaster are firmly rooted in the customs and historical trends of the time. Sadly, these influences are not unique to that period and the reader of this book will certainly be able to recognize more modern examples of petrified bureauocracy and inefficient planning. They say that generals are always preparing for the last war. TITANIC: SINKING THE MYTHS proves that you cannot plan for the last shipwreck.
Book Description
The sinking of the Titanicand Great Sea Disasters is an exciting collection of first-hand stories describing the catastrophe of Titanic's maiden voyage as told by its survivors shortly after the ship sank. Origonally written and published in 1912, Logan Marshall's book was the first attempt to solve the mystery of the accident and relieve the heartache which it stirred internationally. Marshall narrates the personal stories of Titanic's passangers before, during and after the sinking of the ill-fated ship.
This book takes us all back, to understand the emotions of our ancesters from a not-so-comfortable distance. Listen to the voices of real passangers tell their own stories.

Comparing book with the Memorial Edition of 1912.......2002-11-15
I find the reviews and the editor of the corrent listed book "Sinking of the Titanic Thrilling Stories Told by Survivors" interesting. My own copy is Blue Cloth with the same type of picture on the cover only the ship is going in the direction of the spine.
My copy is called: MEMORIAL EDITION SINKING OF THE TITANIC THRILLING STORIES TOLD BY SURVIVORS and story authored by Jay Henry Mowbray, Ph.D..,LL.D. and published by The Mintor Company, Harrisburg, Pa. Entered According to Act of Congress in the year 1912, by Geo. W. Burton, The Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington D.C., U.S.A.
This is a very interesting likeness to my own copy and if it is as interesting to read, is excellent study of human nature.
Parent's Copy.......2002-10-31
My father, before retiring, was an insurance saleman. Sometime in the early '60's, (I am now 48), a customer gave him what was an original hard-copy edition of this book (published in 1912). Although the cover isn't in the greatest shape, it is still usable. It was this book and the early '50's movie, Titanic, with Barbara Stanwick and Clifton Webb, that started a 40 some year interest in the events surrounding the Titanic, before, during and after her sinking. My interest has at least remained the same or increased.
I find that the book has many interesting black & white pictures and towards the end lists other sea disasters up until that time.
It also has a some information on the investigation of the sinking in it.
If for no other reason, the fact that it came out the same year as the sinking is worthy of interest.
Before the original.......2000-03-11
I have recently come across an "Advance Copy" of Logan Marshall's original book "The Sinking Of The Titanic And Great Sea Disasters". This is before the original was completed. It also contains complete bulk order sheets in the back of the book. The book states that the material in the book may be corrected or revised in completed book. I would appreciate any info that anyone could send me on this book, I cannot seem to find out anything about it. If anyone has any info. Please email me at rickcrispen@hotmail.com Thank You!
Very Enteresting.......2000-01-15
I have the original printing in good shape.Would be interested in knowing its value. I couldn't put the book down when I read it. I especially liked the survivor stories.

You might say that Walter Lord provoked the whole Titanic mania by interviewing dozens of survivors and fashioning their reminiscences into the classic non-fiction novel A Night to Remember, which was made into a 1958 film that heavily influenced James Cameron's 1998 epic. Some of the dialogue is more vivid than the 1998 film--when a kid sees the deadly iceberg, he says excitedly, "Oh, Muddie, look at the beautiful North Pole with no Santa Claus on it."
But much has been discovered since Lord's original book made waves--such as the shipwreck itself, and a wealth of scientific inquiry. So he wrote this semisequel, which tackles each of the remaining mysteries about the unnecessary calamity in a methodical, but quite readable, fashion. How come the wireless operators blew it so fatally? Maybe they would have had better operators if they paid them more than $5 a week--as Lord notes, it would have taken a wireless operator 18 years to earn one transatlantic ticket. How come the Californian just sat there in nearby waters and neglected to save anyone on the frantically signaling and flare-firing Titanic? Lord quotes a man on the nonsinking ship admitting to "a certain amount of slackness," which he uses for a sardonic chapter title.
Some of the characters are more sympathetic, such as Renee Harris, who used the money she won suing the Titanic owners for her husband's death to bankroll neophyte playwright Moss Hart's first show. Lord says that Hart's memoir, Act One, depicts Harris reacting to an opening-night flop with optimism. After you've survived the Titanic, what's to worry?
Walter Lord has gotten better reviews, and he needn't fret about his reputation. The Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Barbara Tuchman, author of A Distant Mirror, had this reaction to Night Lives On: "Stunning ... his detection and discoveries make a first-class historical reconstruction and a model in the research and writing of that difficult art." --Tim Appelo

Customer Reviews:
Questions finally meet their answers.......2007-01-09
Being a fan of Walter Lord's impeccably researched book "A Night to Remember," I was instantly intrigued upon learning of "The Night Lives On." I had had several lingering questions for years: why was an order given to turn the ship starboard when the iceberg eventually hit starboard? How, specifically, was the matter of the Californian's involvement dealt with? Which theories about "the gash" don't pan out? All of my questions and more were painstakingly answered as if I had asked Mr. Lord for an explanation myself. His ingenius weaving of history, statistics, personal testimonies, and logic, blended into an easily understandable format, made my love of the Titanic's story grow even more. Anyone can buy one book and know the generalities of the ship. But this book goes above and beyond to educate those already acquainted with the story and wanting a much more in-depth look.
Mysteries explained about the Titanic........2003-04-14
Walter Lord follows up his best seller of the fifties-A Night to Remember--with this eighties version on some mysteries about the sunken liner. One learns about the musicians (two groups actually) and what they played that night while the life boats were being loaded. Another story details the negligence of the freighter Californian for not answering the eight rockets of distress from the Titanic. Another story details the shootings and suicide near the end of the launch of the last life boats. Still another story details why there were not enough life boats on the Titanic and most other ocean liners of the day. Walter Lord clears the air about these mysteries with his well informed writing.
If you want to know more about the Titanic, read both Lord's books on the subject (A Night to Remember, The Night Lives On). They will help the reader understand this tragedy. I have seen the movie and I know the producers consulted these books when they made the movie.
NIGHT LIVES ON.......2002-12-28
WALTER LORD DOES IT AGAIN. HE BRINGS IT ALL TO LIFE. A MUST HAVE FOR ALL "TITANIC" FANS!
Updated information to supplement _A Night to Remember_.......2002-03-25
Calling this 'the sequel to _A Night to Remember_' is slightly misleading. Rather than the storytelling style employed to relate the story of the sinking of the Titanic, this is almost a collection of 17 1-chapter essays about various points of the disaster. Excellent stuff, but if you were expecting, say, the story of the Congressional and Parliamentary investigations of the disaster, you need to look elsewhere, e.g. Wyn Craig Wade's _The Titanic: End of a Dream_.
"Unsinkable Subject" - Overview of the popular fascination with Titanic.
"What's in a Name?" - The actual launching of Titanic from Harland & Wolff's shipyards.
"Legendary from the Start" - Titanic was indeed popularly supposed to be unsinkable, but the trend of sacrificing safety features for competitiveness had actually taken hold during her design.
"Had Ships Gotten Too Big for Captain Smith?" - Explores Smith's record, including a near-collision in harbor with Titanic's sister ship, the Olympic.
"Our Coterie" - The group of first class passengers, including Col. Gracie, mentioned in _A Night to Remember_.
"Everything Was Against Us" - Contrasts the ice warnings, lack of coordination between radio room & bridge, and lookouts, with the notion that the accident was a one-in-a-million chance.
"The Gash" - The collision itself.
"I Was Very Soft the Day I Signed That" - How and why ships the size of Titanic could legally sail while carrying so few lifeboats.
"What Happened to the Goodwins?" - Facts and figures about 1st class vs. 3rd, contrasting White Star's implication that those people down there couldn't understand English, with the Goodwin family (an electrical engineer and his family, emigrating from London to New York, all of whom were lost, including the 6-year-old).
"Shots in the Dark" - Explores the stories about Murdoch, one of the officers loading the lifeboats, and whether shots were fired.
"The Sound of Music" - An in-depth look at the "Nearer My God to Thee" myth, and the 2 bands on the Titanic. (I was aggravated to learn that that entire, touching sequence with the cornet in _Raise the Titanic!_, which I loved as a kid, was made up from whole cloth - the musicians were just as courageous as the movie made them out to be, but no cornet players.) And if you're a professional musician who thinks *your* agent is heartless, wait till you read this.
"She's Gone" - Compares the eyewitness accounts of Titanic's last moments with what we now know.
"The Electric Spark" Captain Rostron of the Carpathia, who picked up the survivors at great personal risk.
"A Certain Amount of Slackness" Discussion of Captain Lord (no relation to the author) of the Californian, in sharp contrast to the preceding chapter.
"Second-guessing" - The inquiries and subsequent litigation (Lord's treatment of Senator Smith should be contrasted with Wade's more detailed treatment, but then Wade has a whole book to play with).
"Why Was Craganour Disqualified?" What happened to some of the survivors. (Craganour, owned by a member of the Ismay family, was disqualified from winning a major British horse race.)
"Unlocking the Ocean's Secret" - The search for the Titanic, leading up to Robert Ballard's successful attempt in 1985 (written before others began plundering the ship for relics).
A Fascinating Listen for a Long Trip.......2000-07-25
I picked up this audiocasette due to curiosity. The information packed tape was interesting, and even made me angry because this tragedy did not have to happen. Like people say, most tragedies are a string of unfortunate events coming together at the same time. I don't think the sinking of this liner is anything different. It gives a glimpse into the technological limitations of the day, the caste system of the gilded age, and the prevailing seaman's attitude of the time. After listening to this (and reading The Perfect Storm), my interest was certainly piqued. I ordered some books on the Titanic and the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, and can't wait until they get here.

The Sinking of the Titanic, by Bruce M. Caplan.......2007-08-09
I have just recently traveled to Nova Scotia and wanted to visit the site of this tragic catastrophe. A friend of mine told me about the book, and I went ahead and purchased it. I found this book fascinating, very detailing and extremely well written. Mr. Caplan did a fantastic job in researching this subject, in spite of the time that has gone by. I would recommend this book to any person that would be interested in history.

I bought this book when a temporary Titanic exibit came to the city where I live. I met the editor and had him sign my copy. When I got home and read it I discovered many interesting facts about the Titanic that even I didn't know. This book is filled with lots of true life stories about the disaster. Anyone who is interested in the Titanic just a tiny bit MUST read this book!!
Best Titanic Book I've Ever Read!.......2002-03-18
I really enjoyed this book. The authors descriptions bring the tragedy to life. The idea that the Titanic was on fire before it left England fascinated me. I've read more than 20 books about the Titanic, and I think this one is the best!
