2 out of 5 stars Old and busted.......2007-05-05

I have always found this book to be cumbersome, difficult to navigate, poorly organized, and lacking in sufficient detail. But of course for years it was basically the only game in town, so everyone relied on it. Those days are over. I recently purchased Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards, and it is an outstanding book. If you're trying to decide which one to buy, definitely get Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards instead. And even if you already own Time-Saver Standards, do yourself a huge favor and buy Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards anyway. It covers everything that Time-Saver Standards does plus numerous other topics, all with much better explanations and details. To top things off, it has FAR more graphics and the entire book is better organized an easier to navigate than Time-Saver Standards.

2 out of 5 stars Usefulness.......2006-07-16

As a practicing L.A., I have bought several McGraw-Hill Construction Books. I get a similar result each time: They seem on first look to fulfill the promise, but I found they don't well serve the need in real life. I get far better use out of Architectural Graphic Standards, and I'm looking forward to Wiley's Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards.

1 out of 5 stars buy the book, forget the CD-ROM version.......2005-03-28

I've got the book and was hoping the CD-ROM would enhance using the book, but it doesn't. The content is very slim compared to the book, and the CAD drawings that are included are also of very limited use. Don't bother with the CD-ROM version of TSSLA.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a must!!!!.......2004-02-06

A great book to have. It was a required text for my site technology classes. Kept referring to it. Lots of information. It should be on everyone's bookcase if you're a Landscape Architect student or already in the profession. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Insight.......2007-08-23

I am going through my first divorce and this book has really explained well how I got there in the first place. There are many stories that relate to different kind of situations. It is an easy read and would be helpful for people who would like to know why they are feeling the way that they feel. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars great book for anyone getting divorced.......2007-03-08

This book helps reassure you that there is a happy life possible after a divorce and that the mood swings and crazy feelings are normal. I have given this book to several of my friends, as well as using it myself.

4 out of 5 stars Ending the Roller Coaster Ride.......2007-02-14

Crazy Time: Surviving Divorce and Building a New Life has just the right tone to help someone stop playing the blame game and start healing. This book is an excellent tool for understanding the anguished feelings that arise when going through a divorce. I recommend adding this volume to the repertoire of anyone dealing with the traumatic divorce or separation situation.

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative, Interesting Book.......2007-02-06

The author experienced a divorce and shares her story in the prologue. The book provides the reader with many case studies chronicling divorce in great detail. The stories touch on the emotional impact of divorce from the beginning to well after the divorce in over. I found this book to be very helpful.

3 out of 5 stars Useful when divorcing.......2007-01-06

This is not the "bible" - as someone told me it would be - for those getting divorced, but it is useful. It's more a smattering and a general commentary than it is a guide. What should I do? - the book sometimes answers that but not always. Does provide good insights.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

1 out of 5 stars Scamming Students?.......2006-09-28

This book appears to be exactly the same as "A World History of Architecture" (Paperback) by the same authors and available on Amazon for $33.64 without the CD. The number of pages, table of contents, and intro sentence are exactly the same. It seems more than slightly shady to me to sell the exact same book with two different names.

This book is required reading for my Architectural History class and was for sale at my school's bookstore for $100. My stodgy old professor isn't teaching from the CD. I am not giving these people my money, I got my copy at the library.

5 out of 5 stars A great reference book.......2002-05-07

This is a book that sometimes resembles Neufert's, but it has a lot of additional information you might need that will make easier the process of designing various types of buildings. It gives you notions, ideas, proportions, measures and everything you need to know when starting a project. A must-have to any architect (specially with these incredible low-priced used ones. I got mine for 13 bucks and it's absolutely like new).

5 out of 5 stars Over priced.......1999-07-02

Amozon.com says that they save you money on books but this book cost a cool 150 smackers even if a customer has purchased many books from them -- the book is valuable and used like a dictionary for reference -- why can't we get a resonable price for it -- Amozon.com send out thank you and promises to do their best to keep the price lowest but why do they continue to bate and switch.

5 out of 5 stars Great Value.......2007-09-11

This is just great basic but very valuable information, and a keeper for a long term reference for anyone investing in houses. I've been a student of John's (and also Peter Fortunato, who has also commented here), for years and always continue to learn from his good quality advise.

I've bought several and give them away to folks that ask about how to invest in real estate and has been a great start for several and a good reference for experienced investors that often find themselves venturing into high risk, marginal properties instead of staying with a good old house.

5 out of 5 stars Building Wealth One House at a Time Describes the Big Picture.......2007-07-31

This is one of the outstanding real estates investment books on the market. John Schuab writes as one who has years of experience and knows the ropes.

The advice in this book is rock solid: buy good houses in good neighborhoods, learn to buy at wholesale prices, and attract long-term low-maintenance tenants who will pay off your loans and improve your property value.

One thing I really like about this book is that John Schuab sees the big picture. He may act in the short-term, but he always has a view of the long-term consequences. So, he doesn't' buy a house because it is priced well, or near a school or a shopping mall. He's thinking 20-30 years ahead to what that house's value and rental desirability will be way down the line.

You have to admire that kind of thinking. That's the kind of thinking that invests in houses that will pay big dividends. Good investments and patience pay off in John Schuab's world. Patience is more than a virtue with John Schuab, it's a commandment. The guy still has the first house that he bought 30 years ago, and its one of his best rentals.

Lincoln said, "I will study and get ready, and perhaps my chance will come." "Building Wealth One House at a Time" is one book worth studying.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read for All RE Investors.......2007-07-24

John Schaub's book is a must read for all Real Estate Invesotrs. From the beginner to the experienced investor, all will gain some very useful insight from this book.
It is not a get rich quick book hyping up Real Estate, but rather a very
low no nonsense way to wealth build through Real Estate one house at a time. John Schaub is not just a promoter, he still buys and sells houses for his own portfolio today.
It's great to learn from such a pro. He also does a couple of seminars a year on Real Estate. They are also a must for any one wanting to get into the Business (I've been to several of them-they are great!).
Bottom line-Great Book, a must read.

1 out of 5 stars If you 're flipper or interested in flipping.......2007-03-31

I didn't expect to learn much from this book, and I wasn't disappointed. I only read the book because it was available from the local libarry. This book is for those interested in acquiring rental houses and accumulating over a lifetime. That aside, I didn't find any value to the book. You could learn more on finding, negotiating, inspections are several flipper books, even if you interested accumulating rental properties. The author pays too much for his houses. He should be more selective, even if he intends to hold onto the houses.

2 out of 5 stars Entry level info.......2007-03-10

I was hoping for a text with more than the very basic, very repeated information in most books of this subject. If it's your first book on real estate investing, it will be great. If you're seeking more advanced subject matter, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Small Business Tax Planning Guide.......2007-07-23

This book is perfect for anyone who currently has (or is contemplating) a small business and wants a lot of general questions answered about business entity structuring, deductions, taxes, and more. It doesn't attempt to replace the need for professional legal or accounting advice. However, it does help you to become more informed about the issues, and that means you're better equipped to profitably steer your business. This book might be too basic for some people. However, it's extremely reader-friendly and is the ideal starting point for anyone who is unfamiliar with these topics. Save yourself some expensive legal and accounting fees by reading this book BEFORE you seek professional guidance in setting up your business or redefining your structure.

3 out of 5 stars Not as useful as I thought.......2007-04-02

This book concentrates a lot on deductions you can make if you own a business. While there is a lot of useful information (and all legal if you keep abundant records), I was expecting more creative ways to lower taxable income.

1 out of 5 stars little guy disaster.......2007-02-13

This book is geared to business people and not for the average individual. A lot of the tax saving strategies are fantasy too!!!!

5 out of 5 stars It's alot easier to start a home-based business than you think!.......2007-01-12

This book is absolutely amazing! Great tips, awesome information, and everything backed up with references. You can get started with a home-based business (Watkins, Avon, etc) for next to nothing, and the money you save on taxes in one year should more than pay for the cost to get started with a familiar company. This info in this book can help you start saving tax dollars from day one.

4 out of 5 stars Well-referenced.......2006-11-01

Much of this book does apply to me (a sole-proprietor). You can get a lot of the information from other sources, but this book does cram a lot into a fairly compact and easy to read format. Although the book is not exhaustive, it does have a benefit over many other tax books (including a couple of the NOLO tax guides): It cites the IRS rulings, private letters etc. that you would need to back up your tax strategies in the face of an audit. My accountant is only willing to claim deductions that he can justify to the IRS. The citations make this easy.

The book is not particularly well-organized, so you do need to read the whole thing to find specific tax deductions.

The book has saved me some money on taxes over the past couple years. In that respect, it has been a good investment. More importantly, it has suggested strategies for me going forward.

I will buy the new edition when it comes out.

He has over 20 years experience in applying technology to meet business challenges and he holds an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. His discussion of the real-time enterprise is a blend of both theoretical and practical perspectives based on his years of applying real-time concepts to actual business situations. He is also the author of Essentials of Supply Chain Management.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Today's Management Trends.......2005-10-13

It was straightforward, relevant, and used examples from outside the business world (I especially liked the one about air to air combat) to parallel non-associated actions and show that the thought processes were similar. I think it was also balanced by explaining some of the pitfalls that may happen from too much of a good thing, like the call center monitoring tools. Great examples from the real world. I got a lot out of it.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding practicle advice.......2005-05-31

Based on over 35 years of experience leading Information Technology organziations as a CIO, I believe that the book by Hugos is a must read for both CIO's and other business function leaders. The book reflects Hugos' vast experience as a CIO and contains practical advice for both. For CIO's, Hugos not only provides realistic and common-sense advice on "what and how" to do things, but perhaps more importantly, "what and how" NOT to do things. CIO's can earn their keeps often by not falling into the trap of following the hype--many companies implement complex and expensive systems like ERP's and CRM's without compelling business case--just to "join the club." Hugos correctly points out that often adding futures and functions to existing well-run systems is a better (safer, faster, cheaper) way to address business needs.
His practical advice to functinal business leaders also hit the target. Particularly valuable are his suggestions on how to ensure IT projects should be structured to succeed and once they are started, how to make sure they are implemented on time and on budget.

4 out of 5 stars A safe journey to the Real-time Enterprise.......2005-03-31

Building the Real-Time Enterprise: An Executive Briefing by Michael Hugos is a timely compendium of lessons about tested and proofed management and operational techniques for all CIO's wanting to create successful internal IT organizations in the global village we live and work in. How is an IT organization to spend its scarce resources to enable its business to excel in a world characterized by hyper-competition and co-opetition? Hugos defines the Real-time Enterprise and systematically explains its business foundations, supported by practical examples. Short overview sections on Information Theory, Cybernetics, General Systems Theory, Total Quality Management, Six Sigma, Business Process Management, System Dynamics and Viable Systems Model, to name a few, provide contextual settings in which the roots for the modern Real-time Enterprise are to be found. The book continues by explaining how to design a real-time enterprise. It does so by motivating the need for change and dynamic management, right through descriptions of real-time observation and action chains [the Observe-Orient-Decide-Act loop, borrowed from aerial warfare]and to guidance on where to start the journey toward the Real-time Enterprise once resolved as strategy. Directions of how to build an IT infrastructure for Real-time Enterprises, and tested project management methodologies are combined to serve as a Best Practice manual towards sure results. Decision-making, modern programming languages, social skills and people management, and the various steps of the system development life cycle, are all described in the context of creating the Real-time Enterprise. Of particular value is sections on hard lessons learned in successes and failures as the author experienced them in his career, and how these are of value in systematically moving towards the Real-time Enterprise. These lessons are classified in strategic guidelines for system design and tactical principles for running projects. Every chapter in the book is supported by a vignette describing a particular executive insight related to the chapter content, and this is where the book's ultimate value lies; it is based on the professional experience of an author, also award-winning CIO, having changed the organization he works for to a Real-time Enterprise with sustainable growth and success in the world of today. Having read Building the Real-time Enterprise left me with fresh and profound insights on how to optimize executive effort and organizational resources for the creation of a dynamic and agile IT capacity in the modern organization. Free of clichés, this book has set a benchmark to be followed as an example of how to combine theoretical principles with practical lessons and verified successes in the IT world. It won't easily be replaced as company on my professional journey!

5 out of 5 stars Building a Real-Time Enterprise: An Executive Briefing.......2005-03-14

Useful book for the busy executive: I am the CFO of my organization and manage many operating units. I have read Mr. Hugos' book and found it refreshing, to the point and extremely useful. In particular the last chapter has armed me with all of the important questions that provide the framework for keeping all projects on task and within budget. These questions provide a common communication framework between technical people and business unit managers that result in projects that stay focused and on track.

4 out of 5 stars Well written, concise and provides valuable insights.......2004-12-11

Providing an easy to read, but comprehensive understanding of the real time enterprise, this book is a valuable reference to the busy CIO or IT executive. The book provides insight into not just the theory behind a real time enterprise, but also details on how to implement this within your organisation. The excellent layout and the use of diagrams and tables does not detract from the message, while the lists provide a valuable reference point. I would recommend this book to any IT executive who is trying to unlock the IT value proposition.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-08-13

I have used this book since the first addition and give it out to all new engineers coming into the pipeline industry, when they are envolved in costs for new piping projects.

5 out of 5 stars An estimating book for all industry.......2004-10-22

I have used this book since 1986. It has been the cornerstone of my pipe estimating. It is easy to use and in most cases you can narrow a seemingly complicated estimating job down to a few tables. I recommend this book to any estimator charged with providing accurate budgets in industrial construction.
The book addresses carbon steel, stainless steel Heavy wall, large O.D. Staging, Insulation, Pipe Hangers and more.
The Author goes into detail in a clear and concise method about how to structure your estimate and provides a sample estimating sheet.
Even though the estimating sheet is about 30 yrs old. I have set one up in excel to match his format and it works beautifully.
A must book for any pipe estimator.

5 out of 5 stars Useful Reference.......2005-02-09

Excerpt: Time-Saver Standards for Architectural Design, 8th edition, is a ref¬erence for architects, design and construction professionals, and edu¬cators.

It represents the result of more than a half-century of documenting the knowledge and technical database for architectural practice. Over 80 authors and experts have contributed to the present volume, either with entirely new articles or, in other cases, updating topics and rec¬ommendations developed over many decades.
How to Use This Book
Scan the first-page summaries. The volume can be quickly scanned to provide an overview of the entire scope of architectural practice data. On the first page of each article, there is an introductory summary as well as key words, also found in the Index.
I
Use the Index for topic search. All topics covered in text, figures, and tables are listed in the Index, providing a cross-reference to locate specific content items.

Read introductory articles and each specific topic article. Each topic area and separate article presents a series of layers of increasing de-tail, beginning with introductory articles. Highlights of each article are presented through illustrations and text, including checklists of key design criteria. References at the end of each article list sources and citations.

Use the CD-ROM for easy access to selected articles with more data and detail. The CD-ROM Table of Contents is at the end of this volume, just before the Index.
Build your knowledge like a building. Topics in this volume are organized like the process of building a building, "from the ground up." This conforms to the Uni format II classification system, beginning with foundations and proceeding through superstructure, enclosure, interiors, and services. It parallels the sequence and elements by which the ar¬chitecture and construction process is logically conceived.
Companion Volumes in the Time-Saver Standards Series
The focus of this volume of Time-Saver Standards for Architectural Design, 8th edition, is the architectural design and building project, as defined in architectural practice, including all technical aspects of its design and construction.

Two additional recent titles of the Time-Saver Standards series follow a similar format and serve as companion volumes and additional ref¬erences:

Time-Saver Standards for Building Materials and Systems, 1st edition (2000), is a compilation of technical details and checklists for specifi¬cation and selection data. It is an ideal companion volume for the building designer and construction specifier.

Time-Saver Standards for Urban Design, 1st edition (2003), is an archival compilation of articles and references from the past 100 years, documenting the values and knowledge base of urban design. It covers topics beyond the scale of building to include urban design and planning.
