Book Description
What would you do if you lived in a community without a library, hospital, post office, or fire department? If you were Benjamin Franklin, youd set up these organizations yourself. Franklin also designed the lightning rod, suggested the idea of daylight savings time, and invented bifocalsall inspired by his common sense and intelligence. In this informative book, Gene Barretta brings Benjamin Franklins genius to life, deepening our appreciation for one of the most influential figures in American history.
Customer Reviews:
Very nice book!.......2007-07-06
This cleverly written and nicely illustrated book was enjoyed by my son, and taught me several things about Ben Franklin I didn't know! It shows how Ben's cool ideas are still in use today, without feeling like a history lesson.
Disappointed.......2007-01-09
For the price that I paid for the book I was expecting much more. The book had good information but few pages. It would be better if it were printed as a soft cover book and the price reduced considerably!
Now & Ben.......2007-01-07
This book has great illustrations. The students I teach spent time looking through all of the details. The stories are accurate and include a fun sense of humor. Students from grade 4-6 also enjoyed the book.
Big Ben.......2006-05-24
Ben Franklin's probably the #1 subject of picture book biographies that cross my desk. He's picturesque -- both visually and as a bio subject. This is the first book I've chosen to review, however, because of its clever format and quirky execution.
On one side is "Now" -- the modern amenities we take for granted, such as odometers, second hands, bifocals, lightening rods and even public libraries. The "Ben" side shows Franklin puttering, tinkering, and hunkering down over his inventions, which include all of the above, plus charting the Gulf Stream, organizing the Post Office, and all that fun with lightening and kites and stuff.
Such a clever fellow, that Ben!
And that's not even getting into his statesmanship and political thinking, which the author treats lightly to focus on the man's inventive genius.
The "Now" side of the page is perky and vibrant in bright blues, while Franklin's 18th century half is awash in faded siennas, the color of aging documents, except for Ben in his blue coat, creating a visual link between our era and his.
I know from the brief time I lived in a Philly suburb how omnipresent are the many reminders of the man's influence, from Indepedence Hall to the Franklin Museum. The city's infused with awe for the man who was arguably our nuttiest Founding Father. But aren't the oddballs the ones you most want to know?
Like Barretta, a Philly resident, you won't be able to resist getting better acquainted.
My children loved it!!!.......2006-03-25
My children (ages 6 - 10) loved the story of Ben Franklin. They enjoyed learning of Ben's inventions and it was fun to talk about how they have evolved over time. The children especially loved the last scene depicting how things will evolve as they grow older. The illustrations and colors on every page were great for the imagination and provided so much insight to every part of the story. Great Job. A+
Book Description
Learn about science the same way Ben Franklin didâby performing incredible experiments!
Ben Franklin, the famous patriot and signer of the Declaration of Independence, was also America's first great scientist. At a time when science was a mystery to most people, he performed incredible experiments that revealed amazing facts about light, heat, sound, electricity, the weather, and other aspects of the natural world.
Now the enormously popular Franklin Institute Science Museum shows you how to do your own exciting experiments Ben Franklin's way. He used common objects such as cooking oil, a glass bottle, or pieces of colored cloth to chart the Gulf Stream, predict the weather, or measure how much a molecule weighs. Using inexpensive, easy-to-find items, you'll discover how to:
- Build an optical toy shop, including a prism, kaleidoscope, telescope, and periscope
- Make a weather station with a working barometer, hygrometer, and other homemade meteorological instruments
- Create an orchestra with flutes, water chimes, maracas, and a guitar you make yourself
- Build your own printing press and print documents on paper that you make in your own paper mill
- Perform these and dozens of other experiments at home, in the classroom, or as science fair projectsâand enjoy the fun of it
The Franklin Institute Science Museum was built in 1934 in Ben Franklin's hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The first hands-on science museum ever, it offers people a chance to learn about science by experimenting with hundreds of exhibits, including a 20-foot model of the human heart, a 350-ton steam locomotive, and a working weather station.

As a Man Thinketh by James Allen
Your thoughts and your dreams determine what you are and what you will be. This little book is meant to stimulate men and women to the discovery and perception of the truth that they themselves are makers of themselves, by virtue of the thoughts which they choose and encourage. Contents: Effect of Thought on Circumstances; Effect of Thought on Health and Body; Thought and Purpose; Thought Factor in Achievement; Vision and Ideals; Serenity;
The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles,
THIS book is pragmatical, not philosophical; a practical manual, not a treatise upon theories. It is intended for the men and women whose most pressing need is for money; who wish to get rich first, and philosophize afterward. It is for those who have, so far, found neither the time, the means, nor the opportunity to go deeply into the study of metaphysics, but who want results and who are willing to take the conclusions of science as a basis for action, without going into all the processes by which those conclusions were reached.
The Way to Wealth by Benjamin Franklin
The first American book on personal finance, The Way to Wealth by Benjamin Franklin is still the best and wisest money book ever written. Originally published in 1758 as the preface to Poor Richard' s Almanack, this little gem has been through innumerable printings and sold millions of copies to those in search of smart but entertaining advice about hard work, earning and saving money and debt. As the 21st Century charges along and the current economic climate continues to send out mixed messages, Franklin' s simple but wise commentary on the value of industry and frugality resonates as much for us today as it did for listeners nearly 350 years ago. This book is very short, but he gets to the point.
Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
"Whatever your mind can conceive and believe it can achieve." Napoleon Hill
Be prepared, therefore, when you expose yourself to the influence of this philosophy, to experience a CHANGED LIFE which may help you not only to negotiate your way through life with harmony and understanding, but also to prepare you for the accumulation of material riches in abundance. Teaching, for the first time, the famous Carnegie formula for money-making, based upon the THIRTEEN PROVEN STEPS TO RICHES.
Organized through 25 years of research, in collaboration with more than 500 distinguished men of great wealth, who proved by their own achievements that this philosophy is practical.

read this one very fully with an open mind. getting rich is easy and needed by all. this is a must have!!!
Automatic Wealth 1 : The Secrets of The Millionaire Mind.......2007-05-07
This was an excellent collection of similar material. It helps to have them in one volume to cross reference
or to quote a particular author. The size of the book ( slightly larger than the typical paperback ) was
also a plus !!
I would highly recommend this collection.
THE BEST classic books on abundance and wealth.......2007-03-29
Where do I start with these books? Classic! Timeless! Must read! I sound like I'm writing copy for a blockbuster best seller. These books are the basis for many of the wealth and abundance work that we see today. Look at all the new material and then compare with these and you will see that the new ones have been updated in language and example, but the truths remain the same.
I believe in going to the source of popular material and especially The Science of Getting Rich and Think and Grow Rich are the wonderful. Both are short reads, but the concepts may have you going back over and over to clarify what seems to be amazing assertions. Take the messages seriously and you may seriously change your life and financial situation!
The Key.......2007-01-04
This audio CD is great for people looking to understand how to increase their value as a money maker in today's society. The principles are great I've already started to develop a new way of thinking, it's really teaching you how to be aware of how easy it is to get ahead in life. Plus it's convenient, I just pop it in the CD player an listen, but the trick is to listen to it consistently if you want change to come your way.

Benjamin Franklin's the Art of Virtue: His Formula for Successful Living
ASIN: 0486290735 |
Book Description
One of the most popular works of American literature, this charming self-portrait has been translated into nearly every language. It covers Franklin's life up to his prewar stay in London as representative of the Pennsylvania Assembly, including his boyhood years, work as a printer, experiments with electricity, political career, much more.
Customer Reviews:
shallow account of a great life........2007-03-10
no doubt about it: ben franklin was a bright fellow. brigher than me, for instance. his autobiography, however, and despite what people on amazon are saying, is a shallow piece of fluff. nothing is touched in depth as he skims from one episode to the next like he is racing to finish an unimportant task. his wife? his family? forget them. all people in his life, in fact, seem deserving of no deep consideration to mr franklin. at times he brags about himself under the guise of modesty, and it is both silly and annoying. plenty of excellent biograhy work out there on this man, and one would be much better served to pick up one of those. it simply boggles my mind that anyone could consider this a 5 star piece of literature. there is not the slightest bit of passion in this writing. mr franklin doesn't even seem terribly interested in what he is writing about. amazon reveiwers seem to award 5 stars to almost anything they read, without the slightest trace of critical detachment. yes, this is a book you would not be wasting your time reading, simply because these are the words of benjamin franklin, but that's it. this is not great literature. not even close.
You've Got to Love Ben!.......2007-01-05
As everyone else has noted, Ben was a brilliant man and an entertaining writer. This is classic American literature, particularly in how it shows a "character" striving to rise up and better himself because that is the promise of the American Dream.
I docked Ben one star because the unfinished ending is not satisfying to someone who comes across this book for the first time. Just so you know, if you get lost during the third part, Ben is discussing the French Indian War.
The Dover edition is very nice and anyone should be satisfied with it.
The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin.......2006-04-17
Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography creates a portal into the mind of one of America's greatest minds. Not only did Franklin play a pivotal role in the development of our nation but he also made huge advancements in the field of electricity. His descriptions of experiences such as the famous kite experiment grant some understanding of just how remarkable these revelations were in the mid-1700s. His subsequent invention of the lightning rod, something taken for granted today, is fascinating to read about in his own words. Learning about the electrical innovations that Franklin made, written in his own words and in the language of the period offers a unique approach to the subject of electricity. The fact that Franklin managed to accomplish all of these feats in addition to playing the role as a Founding Father is astounding and only adds to the significance of the his individual successes.
America's Original Genuis.......2006-03-22
Ben Franklin details his interesting life in his own words. If you want an investment guide, self-help book, historical read, business primer, and a look into the life of an American original, this is it, all in one medium length book. Some readers will find the phrasing antiquated, and sentence structure longer than normal. A small quibble that reflects more upon our modern age than the work itself. Highly recommended.
Seriously..........2006-03-02
Seriously... anybody that rates this book anything other than 5 stars is a complete idiot. He is a hero.
Book Description
A funny, entertaining introduction to Ben Franklin and his many inventions, including the story of how he created the "magic square." A magic square is a box of nine numbers arranged so that any line of three numbers adds up to the same number, including on the diagonal! Teachers and kids will love finding out about this popular teaching tool that is still used in elementary schools today!
Customer Reviews:
Awesome book!!!.......2005-10-17
I love this book! It introduced me to magic squares. Sometimes they're hard but not always. I read the book in 3rd grade. We were doing math groups and Mrs. Wrigely said" Today we are doing Magic squares."
What is a magic square?" I asked.
"It is 9 cubes that all have to equal the same number." Mrs. Wrigely
And that's how I was introduced to magic squares. I recommend this book for kids 6 and above. I think that because some words may be a little challenging for kids that are 5 or 4.

MY BOOK REVIEW BY THE COSMIC GENIUS.......2004-09-28
This book was great for kid's teenagers and adults. What I'm trying to say is that this book is suitable for all ages. I think elementary teachers should read this to their students. This book is great to teach kids about the past and how inventions are still used today, in different ways. I learned how Ben Franklin invented most of the instruments we use today; like the stove, bifocals, flippers and many other inventions. I encourage you to buy this book if you have young kids or not.

Pretty good.......2007-06-15
I sort of have a new interest in reading older books... The original Benjamin Franklin book is 64 years old!!! I thought this book was a little more boring than the others in the series, so I wouldn't totally recommend it.
Good History; Good Biography.......2006-01-22
Books by Augusta Stevenson can always be counted on to deliver a good story and to respect a child's intelligence - and to teach. The book opens: "A long time ago, away up in New England in the little city of Boston there was a certain blue ball. It was about the size of a cocoanut, and it hung above the front door of a certain little house. On this blue ball was a name - Josiah Franklin. That was all, but it was enough. Everyone in Boston knew that the blue ball was the sign Josiah Franklin used for his candle-and-soap shop in Union Street. They knew that he lived in this little house, too, as most tradesmen did in those days. They knew that the shop was in the front room facing the street, and that the Franklin family lived in the big room just back of it." The Childhood of Family Americans series, almost 100 years old now, chronicles the early years of famous American men and women in an accessible manner. Each book is faithful in spirit to the values and experiences that influenced the person's development. These books reaffirm the importance of our American heritage.
Smart Ben.......2000-11-04
I thought that it was a good book because I like biographies. I especially liked the part when he went to the Latin School and he couldn't say the poem because the school master gave Ben the wrong poem. I recommend this book to you if you like to read biographies. I also recommend this book if you think that a president's life would be interesting.
If you are the type of person who loves to read about famo.........1997-12-02
us historians of our past...I highly recommend this biography of a young printer, Benjamin Franklin. Stevenson talks about the bigger of Ben's life, however going into smallest details in ocations(In my opinion: Like all biographers should.)This is a small price for a large book and may be ordered from Amazon.com!
Book Description
In honor of the 300th anniversary of Franklin's birth, Mark Skousen has accomplished what the old philosopher was unable to complete: He has finished the autobiography completely in Franklin's own words. The Compleated Autobiography retains Franklin's sophistication, humor, and sense of irony that made the original autobiography a classic.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty Good.......2007-09-01
Let's just say I am a Franklin buff. If you really like Franklin or history this is a worth while read. If you want to learn more about Franklin you should start with the Autobiography and then move to one of the many Bios, the most recent of which is Walter Isaacson's "Benjamin Franklin." If you get through those, you may be well ready for this read. To be honest, in my opinion, the author stands in the way of this work a little but it is not bad.
Book review.......2007-03-16
Book received timely and in excellent condition. Am still in the process of reading it.
Great book for History Buffs.......2007-02-21
I gave this as a gift to my mother. My father read it cover to cover and enjoyed it and my mother is in the process of doing so. It is written in an older style and can be a bit dry, but history buffs (my parents) are really enjoying it.
Don't buy this book.......2007-01-09
I thought this book was about the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin. This is not the book I was thinking about. It was a book written by Benjamin Franklin but which is written after he wrote his famous autobiography. The book did not contain the contents of his autobiography but contains his writings that were written during his last years that was not included in his widely read autobiography.
The book title says it is 'compleated' autobiography. The book's title should be 'Last memoirs of Benjamin Frankilin'
The best history book ever..........2006-05-24
This was truly fascinating getting the insights of Benjamin Franklin. What is a amazing, is the futuristic thinking of Mr. Franklin. His guess that humans would eventually defy gravity and live much older ages and eradicating disease (just amazing). The mention of innoculation of his grandson for small pox. And his thoughts on economics and trade relations were really something, as if he were a modern economist. After reading this book, I am truly in awe and it cannot compare to anything from a high school or college history book...Amazing!!
