Book Description

An element of drama has always attended Rupert Everett, even before he first rose to fame with his outstanding performance in Another Country. He has spent his life surrounded by extraordinary people, and has witnessed extraordinary events. He was in Moscow during the fall of communism; in Berlin the night the wall came down; and at home in downtown Manhattan on September 11th. By the age of seventeen he was friends with Andy Warhol and Bianca Jagger, and since then he has been up close and personal with some of the most famous women in the world: Julia Roberts, Madonna, Sharon Stone, and Donatella Versace. Whether sweeping the stage for the Royal Shakespeare Company or costarring with Faye Dunaway and an orangutan in Dunstan Checks In (they both took ages to get ready), Rupert Everett always brings as much energy and talent to his life as he does to his career. Who else has lived in Paris with Beatrice Dalle, modelled for Versace and Valentino, been possessed by the spirit of Anthony Perkins, and played bridge with Christopher Isherwood? A superb raconteur and a keen observer of human folly (especially his own), Rupert Everett turns his life into a captivating story of love, nostalgia, fame, glamour, gossip, and drama. From the eccentricities of the British upper classes to the madness of Hollywood, from the Russian steppes to an Easter egg hunt in Elizabeth Taylor's garden, Everett reveals himself as a consummate storyteller and a charming guide to life lived in the fast lane.

3 out of 5 stars Good But Not As Exciting As I Thought.......2007-09-22

This book was pitched to me as a scathing tell-all. Actually it reads more like snippets here and there from Everett's life. Certainly he has a way of telling a story and there are a few humorous moments as well. If you've read his novels you should know that his style doesn't change when talking about his own life. It is an interesting read if not completely entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars What a life, so far!.......2007-08-23

Rupert Everett came to me via his movies. Since the first movie I saw him in, he's charmed me completely. He's divine, totally appealing, and adorable beyond belief. Then I read this book. Well, I was taken by surprise to discover how well he writes, given his lack of interest in formal education and shenanigans he's pulled at the expense of education. Yet he also has had the good sense to not only experience what life has to offer, and then some, and then some more, but he seems to have learned something from every experience he's had thusfar, which impressed me. I found his book shocking, funny, sad, unbelievable, fascinating, beautifully worded, and it was a real treat to read. I am even more fascinated by him now than before. To say he is a complex individual would be a gross understatement. His depth and shallowness and understanding and broad-mindedness and ability to experience and digest life is incredible. There may not be enough adjectives to describe Rupert Everett and how he lives his incredible life. This book is a wild ride of fantastic characters and unbelievable situations that requires an open mind and good sense of humor. I loved it and plan to read more from the well-written Rupert!

2 out of 5 stars Is that all there is?.......2007-08-18

To judge from this book, between his occasional acting jobs, Rupert Everett met a lot of famous people, got very drunk, and indulged in anything (or anyone) offered to him. There are enough names dropped to fill several memoirs, and so many of them became "close friends" that I ended up wondering if Everett, like Louis XIV, never spent a single moment alone. He "adores" everyone and they presumably adore him; he finally sums it up himself when he says that in his circle, most friends don't last more than 5 minutes. He seems to have been constantly in motion as he collected all these best friends in far-flung corners of the world, and it's easy to lose track of the who/what/why/when of the book.

Everett is an experienced writer (though his novels barely get a passing mention)and he writes well. His descriptions of people and places are precise, witty and evocative. But the anecdotes are too practiced and embellished, well polished for talk shows and dinner parties, and I didn't believe half the book really happened in such well-formed anecdotes. He is at his best describing the backstage warfare of the theater and the hothouse atmosphere of a film set, but his frequent refrain of "back then" or "in those days" made me think the novelist was at work, painting a world of generations ago, not a decade or two.

The ultimate test of an autobiograpy is the picture that emerges of the author. Everett comes across as glib, self-indulgent, and at times unprofessional. We learn nothing of his inner life. As a member of the "just do it" school, he has nothing to say about the craft of acting, a job he aspired to from childhood, and with a couple of exceptions we don't even learn the names of the people he was intimately attached to, which is to say sleeping with for protracted periods of time. He doesn't dwell much on the loss of friends to AIDS and is at times a little flippant in discussing it. He seems more upset over the demise of the South Beach party scene, and the only time he expresses true human emotion is when his dog dies.

I have nothing against Rupert Everett; in fact, I like him on screen and I respect him for being openly gay even when it hurt his career. But his book simply shows how far good looks, celebrity, and knowing the right people can carry someone in our gossip-crazy world. I thought he was better than this.

4 out of 5 stars Great reading for other reasons than the celeb-gossip.......2007-07-28

I've never had any particular opinion of Rupert Everett. Ok - I admit I bought this book partly because I wanted a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the Hollywood lifestyle. But Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins actually has got so much more. To my opinon (with English being my second language) it's very well written with a very developed use of words and language. Sometimes to the extent that I first suspect there has been a ghost writer involved. But as the reading goes on I find that's probably not the case and the suspicion might have more to do with me underestimating the author. Everett brilliantly manages to describe his own life against a background of larger historic events which gives the book an extra dimension that elevates the reading experience considerably. Sometimes it can be hard to believe that he recollects events from ages ago in such detail and hence one suspects there are a few exaggerations here and there. But on the other hand that's common in all storytelling and is sometimes necessary to make the reading more capturing. A few times during the reading I thought he got a bit over-long in his descriptions. But that does not diminish an overall great reading experience. In the end I think the book actually gives a pretty truthful image of the person Rupert Everett and his very interesting life so far.

4 out of 5 stars Will The Real Rupert Everett Please Stand Up............2007-07-07

Fasinating..... Mr. Everett is an author of the top drawer. His story may be true/or not, however it is very interesting and intertaining. A good summer read. I hope he writes more books that are as enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar Advice for a Celebrity Personal Assistant Job Seeker.......2005-01-22

I first heard about a job as a Celebrity Personal Assistant from some overdramatized, hyped show promising all sorts of glam and goodies. When I went to begin a more serious inquiry into it as a real career I found a lot of equally useless websites and guides that just glossed over the "perks" and didn't detail any real practical advice on this topic. Until I found Beyond the Red Carpet. This is a comprehensive book that offers a complete view of the vital role that Personal Assistants play in the world of celebrities and high profile successful people. It offers a clear list of the skills, temperments and abilities required for this job as well as sound, concrete steps that you can take to be successful in this career. At about 25 bucks you get a wealth of knowledge, know-how and insight. It covers the pitfalls, expectations and some of the frustatrations one might face as well as the upside - well balanced, clearly written and practical it's obvious that the writer knew her topic throughly - living it not just reporting or glamourizing it. Despite an incredibly tight budget, I invested the extra monies to take the actual workshop at their Atlanta headquarters and found their help invaluable. This is a professional text written by a talented, focused and knowledgeable woman and is a link to a much broader network of experience and expertise. I was frustrated and lost before attending and through the staff's help, the information from this text and meeting other dynamic individuals pursuing this challenging, but exciting career; I found the inspiration to make a new, more focused start. After getting home I rewrote my resume using their suggestions and was told that my it stood out amid over 400 who had applied for an Executive Assistant/Personal Assistant job to a local CEO. The comment by the HR person was - Yours was the first resume that made me stop what I was doing and pick up the phone to call you. I've accepted the position and am happily pursuing it as the next step to building the kind of experience that will land me a Celebrity position. Don't be fooled by the sales pitch flashy books out there. If you're serious about this as a career - get this book and look into their workshop. I found the author and her entire staff to be bright, energetic and talented business professionals with the experience and connections to make great things happen. RHExecAssistant at AOL

This is a great idea book. I took it to the gym and used the techniques. It is a great beginners book.

5 out of 5 stars Very good workout book!.......2007-03-27

Don't be decieved by the cover! Something about the name and the picture on the front threw me. I thought it might be one of those books of how the celebrity worked out and never really explaining the workout to the reader, just so the author could make a quick buck.

This is very well written with weekly workout routines and every exercise has photos to follow up on. They separate your goal into different routines.

What I love most about this book is that they don't use the default strength training moves! They use band resistance (or tubing) and do different, unique moves to tone the body! This is really a workout you could do at home in your living room. You don't need a treadmill, if you have a nice place to walk and run or jump rope even!

The star's trainers, for example, Mike Alexander (Jessica Simpson's trainer) writes a whole section for abs and the exercises he uses. In another chaper, another trainer writes about the best shoulder toning moves.

I felt like the nutrition section wasn't gimmicky or to hard to follow. They were real in their advice, following a natural whole foods diet with fish and lean meats to get your protien.

All in all- I might have an addiction to buying diet and fitness books, but this is a great one to add to my collection. Especially because I love using the Physioball (think that big, pop resistant workout ball) and resistance tubing!

5 out of 5 stars Sure to be a hit with tweens and film junkies........2007-06-28

The Beacon Street Girls series is part of a brand designed to empower "tweens", and help them with the transition from "toys and boys." The books feature five middle school age best friends, all from diverse backgrounds, and with distinct interests. They go to school on Beacon Street in Brookline, MA.

The books are (according to the publisher) "shaped by leading experts in adolescent development and current research on how to positively impact girls' self-esteem." Although I'm generally a bit leery of books that try explicitly to get across a particular message, I like the Beacon Street Girls books. The characters are well-drawn and realistic. They make mistakes, and learn from them. They suffer from pesky younger brothers, difficulty with math, and divorcing parents, among other ordinary tribulations. Despite their differences, they are loyal to each other. And their stories are fun!

This installment, part of a series of "adventure" titles that each feature only one of the five Beacon Street Girls, sends Maeve to movie camp. It reminds me a tiny bit of Noel Streatfeild's books (Theater Shoes, Ballet Shoes, etc., though with quite a bit more privilege). Near the start of what promises to be a boring school vacation week, with all of her friends away, Maeve learns that her father has arranged to host a New York Film Academy film camp in the family's theater. A wealthy sponsor has offered to pay for improvements to the theater, and a famous Hollywood director will be leading the camp. Maeve is over the ceiling thrilled, despite that fact that her annoying younger brother, Sam, will also be attending the camp.

When camp begins, Maeve learns a lot, works hard, and is a bit star-struck by the pampered daughter of the wealthy sponsor (who, in an amusing throwaway joke, knows the famous "Venice Doubletree"). The other kids are more down-to-earth, though the Director's son turns out to have real acting experience. Through her interactions with the other campers, and their parents, Maeve learns some hard lessons about trust, friendship, and betrayal. I must admit that I saw the betrayal coming a mile off, and I think that many readers will, too. But the point isn't so much the betrayal itself, but the way that Maeve reacts to it, and eventually bounces back.

I also enjoyed Maeve's relationship with her little brother. He follows her around with a movie camera and drives her crazy, but also stands by her in unexpected ways. Here's one of my favorite exchanges:

""Good," Sam answered. "Because I think you're the best actress in the whole world!"

I looked at Mom, who just shrugged. Sometimes little brothers could surprise you by saying the nicest thing and make you feel totally guilty for ever thinking of them as an annoying pest. Then other times...

"Last one to the theater's a rotten egg! Haha, that's you, Maeve," Sam suddenly cried."

I think that fans of the BSG books will enjoy this installment. It's nice to have a chance to focus on just one of the girls, and get to know Maeve and her family a bit better. And Maeve is fun to spend time with. She's overly dramatic, and annoyingly obsessed with her appearance, but she's not afraid to work hard or to admit her mistakes. And her genuine enthusiasm for movies is irresistible. The details about how a movie is made are interesting, too, and should be a hit with kids who are film junkies. I give Maeve on the Red Carpet four stars!

Warning: No celeb was spared during the writing of this tongue-in-cheek stroll down the red carpet of fashion, fame, ego, and blinding glitter. Written by the man who isn’t afraid to tell Christina Aguilers her hairdo is a disaster, Red Carpet Diaries could make you feel you know more about Hollywood shtick than Nicole Kidman’s stylist. Also: do not try to operate heavy machinery while reading this book.

    4 out of 5 stars I Love This Guy!.......2006-02-17

More times than not, I found "Cojo" more interesting than some of the celebs he dished some info out on, because a lot of them turned out to be the way I suspected. Although I was quite pleased that he declared oft creepy Hugh Grant to be a "wanker," I was more interested in the fashionista himself--the reason I picked up the book in the first place. It was hard to put it down once I began reading.

Cojo is fun, witty, and seems to be a genuinely nice, honest guy. When I first saw the king of campy on the Today Show, I was positively blown away by his individuality and fearlessness of being true to himself. That's what I really got out of his book; the fact that I share a long history of being regarded as a social freak and how he didn't let anybody stop him from becoming a success in his own right. He also confesses that celebrities are chislers and not often as great to meet as a lot of people think--in other words, they're just like everyone else with the exception of PR and far more money than they often deserve. I'm looking forward to his next book, which is the reason I only gave this one 4 stars. Here's to hoping it's even better.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta love the Cojo :-).......2005-09-04

Steven is hillarious and I just love him. If you've ever seen him on the Today show, his personality and his mood is infectious. He's really quick and sharp. I love the adjectives he uses in here for people. He never fails to make me laugh and he seems to be quite down to earth and an overall nice guy. Read this book. There's almost something in it for everyone and you won't regret buying this. It's certainly not a deep and meaningful book but it's never been portrayed as such, so forget the negative reviews.

1 out of 5 stars Why do we care.......2005-02-04

About what this guy has to say about fashion, or anything else for that matter? How this guy gets 15 minutes of anything is beyond me and a sad commentary on our celeb driven society. I personally could care less about any celebrity except Hasselhoff. Hoff is the sun when it comes to the hollywood galaxy. There would be no entertainment industry without him. Oh my goodness, brad and Jen split, who the heck gives a badger's butt? I really don't care what celebrities wear, who they're dating and how much their home(s) cost. VH1 now has become E!, so my garbage intake can double. We actually sit and watch shows that rub how much celebs spend in our faces. We eat it up. You know what celebrities are? They are people with a different job than us that some are really good at. They just make gobs of money and many are really pretty after their $800/hr makeup artist gets through with them. This culture of ours cares way too much about them and worships them as if they are godlike figures. This cojo goof has a career because there are enough losers that will actually care about what Lindsey Lohan wears to an awards show. She could wear a firesuit and a ten gallon hat and I wouldn't care at all. Ok, I'm done.

1 out of 5 stars As Hollywood Inside Info Goes ..........2004-02-19

I love Hollywood gossip books. This was the biggest waste of paper ever (and mind you, without the added highlighted quotes taking up most of the page ...) Really no inside scoop on anyone or anything, much less the author himself. A series of "aren't I cute" quotes that made me feel quite empty at the end. One of the most shallow people I have ever read about, used to like his appearances, now he makes my skin crawl.

    5 out of 5 stars Perfect dish........2004-01-24

I love Cojo's sassy commentary on tv and in People. This book lives up to his honesty on the red carpet. He always tells it like it is and this book is no exception. It's not brain science, but it's fun and fluffy, and he never claims to be doing much more than having a good time. I spent a very satisfying afternoon immersed in the glam world of celebrities and Cojo.

    Book Description

Rose is Rose has long garnered attention from fans across the country and around the world. When the National Cartoonists Society named Rose creator Pat Brady Outstanding Cartoonist of 2004 it only confirmed what those readers already knew in their hearts: Brady rolls out one of the best strips in the business.

Red Carpet Rose is Brady's first book since he received the NCS honors. As the seven previous Rose is Rose books have done before, this one continues the tales of the hilarious Gumbo family: Rose, her husband, Jimbo, and their devilish, delightful, and demanding son, Pasquale. Brady deftly captures the innocent and ageless qualities of wonder and awe at the world's boundless experiences, as seen through the lives of his beloved characters.

Whether the Gumbos are sharing a simple family moment in the park, Pasquale is pushing his little-boy limits, or Rose is morphing into her Biker Chic alter ego, this Rose is Rose compilation of daily and Sunday strips delivers all the fun, laughter, and family-loving moments that mark Brady's work. This is cartooning at its best!

3 out of 5 stars Not quite the same with Wimmer handling the art chores.......2006-10-15

I will readily concede that it's certainly a difficult chore producing a daily comics strip and that joint efforts and ghost writers and artists are the norm in this artform.

That being said, Rose is Rose is not quite what it used to be now that Mr. Wimmer has become involved.

4 out of 5 stars Laundry the Rose Way.......2006-05-19

Rose, Jimbo and Pasquale Gumbo are back (and let's not forget Clem and Vicki) in another collection of daily strips. Rose and family continue their way through daily life as only they can. Only here can making tea become a romantic moment or guardian angels carry school books.

While Rose is part of the most loving family in comics, the romance is turned down a little in this collection (unlike in RIGHT ON THE LIPS). The love is there but with less kissing. Pasquale seems to have become a little better adjusted and doesn't get his feelings squashed by Clem so much. All in all a very good collection.

4 out of 5 stars Guide To Your Child's Stardom.......2007-04-28

Baby Modeling & Beyond: From The Stroller To The Red Carpet, by Sibylla Nash, introduces the reader to guidelines for getting your child into the modeling or acting business. The book starts off with a quiz for parents to determine if they are ready to get their child into the business. There was information on modeling scams and the warning signs to look for. There are also listings of tax deductions and modeling agencies with addresses and phone numbers. Ms. Nash also provided a section called Unscripted, which are her own personal experiences. Of interest was information she shared regarding times when her daughter could not fit the clothes that were available for her age and what she did to address the dilemma. She says that parents must have a flexible schedule to be able to go to auditions and they may need a backup person to fill in for them.

There is also information pertaining to starting a bank account for your child. There was emphasis put on the fact that California established a law called the Coogan Law which makes parents deposit 15% of their child's earnings into a trust fund account. The information on location and relocation was very beneficial. It tells parents to do their homework when it comes to location. For example, some states require work permits for children. Also, consider the cost of living when deciding to relocate.

I recommend this read to people looking to get their child into modeling or acting. This book was very informative and well-written.

5 out of 5 stars Bring this one out of mothballs!.......2005-12-15

One of the joys of having a child is rediscovering long-since-forgotten books from my own childhood. When I pulled this one off the shelf at the library a few months ago, I recognized it immediately, and it felt like finding an old friend. It's still as fresh and fun as ever, and now a real favorite of my son's. Unlike another reviewer, I didn't find the plot predictable: I thought it was rather clever and unexpected. The drawings are great (and hip in a retro sort of way), and it's very fun to read the rhymed couplets. How this classic has fallen out of print is beyond me. Try to find a used copy if you can!

5 out of 5 stars got it fast.......2005-09-29

This was the first of our Five in A Row curriculum purchases for a used book. I have bought most new so far. It was fun waiting for our hard to find book and we were pleased with the condition it was in and how fast it arrived.

    5 out of 5 stars Colorful.......2001-12-06

This classic 1948 children's poem is another "he-went-that-away." This time readers follow no insects, animals or children--but as the title suggests, a red carpet.

The occasion for this silliness is the expected arrival of the Duke of Sultana at the Hotel Bellevue. The doorknobs were shined, the floors were swept and the carpet was set out. But when the doorman, Jim West, unrolled the carpet with his toe, it kept on rolling.

Down the corridor floor, through the lobby, out through the door, over the sidewalk "where people were strolling," dodging buses and hacks, over trolley car tracks, and so on.

The carpet rolled through town, turned left at Pearl Street, down Main, and at Plum Street turned left again. The Mayor Mr. Potts called the police and Officer Mike O'Shea took up the chase. Squad cars, cycles, motors, and sirens ran up hills and down dales, through orchards and meadows, past workmen and down to the ferry.

The plot is very predictable. But children love this bright red carpet, trailing its way through amusing verse and quaint illustrations.
