Book Description

The renowned, iconoclastic head of the Acorn Fund shares his profit-maximizing, risk-minimizing investment advice in a book as irreverent as it is smart.

When USA Today asked a group of prominent professional portfolio managers whom they would choose to manage their personal wealth, the person most often cited was Ralph Wanger (Warren Buffett came in second). Hailed by both Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report as the "dean" of small-cap investing, Ralph Wanger explains the principles of investing in small, rapidly growing companies whose stocks will yield well-above-average returns.

Investors are like zebras in lion country: They must settle for meager pickings by sticking in the middle of the herd, or seek richer rewards at the outer edge, where hungry lions lurk. Wanger shows investors -- whether they are investing in mutual funds or buying stocks on their own -- how to achieve the right balance of safety and risk to survive and prosper in the investment jungle. Destined to become a classic in the field of investing, A Zebra in Lion Country is as entertaining as it is instructive.

3 out of 5 stars Easy read, broad concepts - for the mutual fund investor.......2005-06-05

If you are looking for a book on how to pick small cap stocks, this book is not for you.

If you are looking for reasons why mutual funds are better off than picking stocks on your own, this book will offer you many such reasons.

Mr Wanger invests in what I would conclude as a fundamental-value style and indeed there are certain principles that a reader may be able to extract and apply to his own stock picking approach, eg investing in themes, buying value etc.

However, the more I read, the more the book seemed to promote mutual funds for the lay investor. Depending on your personal preferences, that may indeed be the way to go for some of you.

I offer the following quote from page 237 as a summary of this book:

'Don't overpay, no matter how much you like a company. Invest in themes that will give a company a long-term franchise. Invest downstream from technology. Think and invest globally. Find stocks to own, not trade.'

5 out of 5 stars Learn What the Big Boys Know.......2004-12-12

A must read if you plan on investing in this very competitive market. Mr. Wagner picks his brain for us for his knowledge of this special market.

1 out of 5 stars Ralph Wagner explains how to invest in Ralph Wagner.......2004-02-13

The subtitle claims this book explains "how to invest in small rapidly growing companies".

Well, it turns out that, according to this book, the best way to accomplish this is to invest in small, rapidly growing companies. In all seriosness, there is almost no useful advice in this book about how to pick stocks.

What this book does explain, in extravagent detail, is why you should not pick stocks, you should use a mutual fund, and while we are on the subject, the Acorn fund (which is run by Ralph) has made lots of money. Also Acorn lost some money here and there, you shouldn't get the impression that the author is claiming infallability.

In all fairness, this was a fairly interesting read, and provided some good general insights into investing. But as far as useful insights into choosing small, rapidly growing companies, the reader is left with the impression that this can only be done by professionals. A legitimate viewpoint, except for the fact that this is exactly what the book promises (fraudulently, in my estimation) to explain how to do.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2004-01-19

One of the best books I've read in investing. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A great book by a great Fund Manager and a talented writer.......2003-05-18

Mr. Wanger's Book is probably the most honest, sensible, intelligent and realistic book written on investing. Reading this book helps you acquire the necessary logic, method, style, and discpline to use in order to succeed in the market for the long run. Thank you Mr. Wanger.

5 out of 5 stars Well-written, succinct, and full of insight.......2007-01-02

After laboring through several other books on the same subject for an essay at Oxford University, I was delighted when I found this brilliantly-written work. The reports are true: it is an excellent academic overview of the subject, and as a professor-in-the-making, this work will be my recommended starting point for all students of nineteenth-century British imperial history.

4 out of 5 stars Good to see an old friend updated!.......2003-10-15

I first read Lion's Share, when I was doing my Honours History at Stirling Unversity. I really enjoyed this book, it was a good read, as well as giving a good coverage of this very important period of history and its legacy. It helped to put the history of the British Empire in context, to see its both good and bad aspects, as part of the larger picture of European Imperialism.

4 out of 5 stars Big subject is well compressed!.......2000-12-06

British imperialism is too big a subject for a 400 odd page book. But Bernard Porter compressed it into this small book, which looks successful to me. This book would be very helpful to those who would study modern history from now on. But it would be also helpful to those who already have some knowledge about modern history in that the author closely examined the relationship between British Imperialism and British Economy. Because my country Korea was once a victim of Japanese Imperialism, I never doubted before that imperialism is just a method of red-in-tooth-and-claw capitalism. Now I learned that things are not that simple. The author says late 19th-century British Imperialism was both capitalist and anti-capitalist at one and the same time, which broadened my scope of understanding. Though imperialism contributed to British economic decline, it also protected its citizens from red-in-tooth-and-claw capitalism.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent survey and a great read........2000-06-28

I have read more than a few books about the British Empire, and this is one of the best. The genre's more readable books, like James Morris's Pax Britannica trilogy and Denis Judd's Empire, tend to be too episodic for a good academic survey. Bernard Porter's The Lion's Share, however, presents a comprehensive, linear narrative that still manages to be consistently readable. I return to this book frequently for both reference and leisure-reading. My only complaint is that the recent edition's cover looks too much like a textbook's, and will probably discourage bookstore browsers from discovering its pleasures.

    4 out of 5 stars 4 and a half stars, really -- more like a novel than a mystery.......2006-03-28

This is the second Jimmy Flannery that I've read. I lived for many years in Chicago and love the Chicago setting, although Jimmy Flannery is Southside and Irish, and that's a whole different world from lakefront liberal wasp. This is one of the later books in the series -- Jimmy has climbed the political ladder and is now in a position to consider running for Alderman (an important position in Chicago politics). His "Chinaman," the man who has helped him along the way, dies at the beginning of this book, and he kind of inherits the man's kingdom, both physical and political. He ends up dealing with a problem involving a middle-aged hooker and competing circles of prostitution.

Jimmy struggles to be honest and good in a system that makes that difficult. He knows there's a line somewhere in all that grey that he doesn't want to cross, but where is it? And what's going on, exactly? In the political circles in which he moves, it can be difficult to figure out exactly what's going on. There's a woman found dead, and Jimmy gets called to the scene. Was it an accident or murder, and if it was murder, who did it? And who is it that is trying to get him involved?

A lot of this book is about Chicago and Chicago politics, about a political system that remembers what it was like under the old Mayor Daley but knows that things are changing, particularly as politicians find themselves under indictment for doing things that were considered perfectly acceptable in the past (and were in fact legal then).

I intend to read more in the series. But if you're looking for a fast-paced thriller, this isn't the book for you. It's atmospheric and thoughtful, a kind of political noir novel (think of the movie Chinatown here, and move it to Chicago).

    4 out of 5 stars Compromising Offers.......2003-07-03

The Lion's Share begins with the death of Jimmy Flannery's long-time political sponsor (his "Chinaman"), Chips Devlin. Jimmy is in for a surprise when he learns that he has inherited the Devlin house just so long as he lives in it. Soon his wife, Mary, is sorting out all of Devlin's belongings and picking out wallpaper. Friends begin pitching in to do the hard work of restoring the house.

Jimmy finds himself without a political mentor for the first time in his adult life. He's surprised to find ex-congressman Leo Lundatos at the wake for Chips. Lundatos soon issues an invitation for Jimmy to join the team as his right-hand man while Lundatos tries to make a fresh start by running for local office as alderman from the 11th ward. This seems like the big time to Jimmy, but there are a few things bothering him. First, Lundatos lost his job in Congress for being caught at minor thievery. Jimmy is all for doing the right thing. Second, can the two men actually work together? Third, can Lundatos be trusted?

The offer quickly gets around, and Jimmy receives a surprise telephone call telling him to come to a building if he wants to know whether or not to take the offer. When he gets there, the caller disappears without being seen . . . but Jimmy does find a beautiful woman dead in a bath tub. This is a woman Jimmy had met at the wake who chose to call herself Fay Wray, and earned her living by pleasing men.

Jimmy calls the police, and stays involved to be sure that the murder doesn't get swept under the rug. In the process of finding out who killed Fay Wray, he learns a lot about Lundatos and his wife. By the time the story's over, it's an easy decision for Jimmy to make.

The theme of this story is that you don't know how sound your principles are until you've been tempted to abandon them. Naturally, powerful politicians receive all kinds of favors and may come to expect special treatment. As Jimmy moves up the political ladder, he will find himself mixing with those who have been compromised by that access.

I like this series very much, but I did not enjoy the ugly material in here about paid sex. For that reason, this is one of my least favorite Jimmy Flannery books.

For those who remember who Dan Rostenkowski was, the Lundatos character seems loosely based on the former House Speaker's Congressional career.

After you finish this story, think about what principles you believe in that you would not usually compromise. What temptations might you have to overcome in order to hold to those principles? How can you prepare to resist the most challenging temptations?

4 out of 5 stars short and sweet.......2000-06-19

This is the 1st book by Robert Campbell I have ever read and I am hooked! This book is a swift moving book about politics and a murder in Chicago. The Irish-Americans are the most popular characters. You can read this book in about one or two days. And read it again, and again, and again......

Young Prince Leo II, a winged lion, grows up in his father's opulent palace with every luxury--ruby roses, silver rattles, trunks full of gold--but no books. Leo Golden Mane, Emperor of the Cats, had no need for books: "The emperor couldn't read or write, not even his own name, but he didn't care. When he roared, everyone jumped."

So imagine young Leo's surprise when he tries out his special blue-green wings and winds up not only in the paws of King Otto of the North, but in a huge library full of something he's never seen--books! Otto was rumored to have magnificent treasures lining his walls. But Leo soon discovers just how fantastic Otto's wealth truly is, when the avuncular bear opens up a storybook and begins to read aloud. When Leo wakes up the next day, his first words are "Please read me another story." It takes Leo a while to regain his strength and fly back home, but he learns to read... a skill that not only opens up his world but ends up forging an alliance between King Otto's kingdom and his father's.

Chris Conover, author and illustrator of many wonderful picture books, including Froggie Went A-Courting, creates magnificent illustrations to accompany this whimsical fairy tale about the power of reading. Young readers will want to spend hours poring over every regal detail. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

    Book Description

Prince Leo discovers a new treasure -- books

When Prince Leo, a lion, is born with wings on his back, his father bellows, "Our son will go far!" It's not long before that declaration takes on a literal meaning. The day arrives when Leo flaps his wings and learns that flying is simple - but stopping is another story. Exhausted and far from home, he eventually crash-lands and is found by King Otto of the North, a bear who cares for Leo while he recovers. The best medicine of all turns out to be the books that are read to him - Leo's kingdom doesn't have books. When he's finally ready to return home - after taking flying and reading lessons - Leo will be bringing a wonderful treasure back with him. Chris Conover, with her large-scale, intricately detailed illustrations, has outdone herself.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The gift of reading........2005-08-12

My daughter loved this book much more than I. It is a tale of a small lion prince who was born with wings but never taught how to use them. One day he accidentally catches the wind blowing through his room and sails out the window, crash landing in the territory of the rival king. This king is kind to him and helps tend his broken wing, while teaching the little prince to read. When the prince returns home, he shares his newfound treasure with his friends as no one in his kingdom had previously known of the existence of books. It's a nice story to introduce the idea of learning to read to your child, since it emphasizes that being able to read is a real gift, but I thought the text was a bit simple and the illustrations didn't always follow the pacing of the story. Overall, you might want to borrow this from the library but it's not a must-own.

4 out of 5 stars Sumptuous illustrations for this fairy tale.......2002-08-04

Chris Conover's "The Lion's Share" is a modern-day fairy tale with many elements of old fairy tales. The twist is that all the characters are animals instead of humans.

Conover's story is not as rich as the illustrations that accompany it, but those are so sumptuous and colorful that they more than make up for the slight weak spots in the tale itself. Leo is a baby lion with wings who, when he discovers how to use them, accidentally flies too far from home. He lands in the kingdom of King Otto of the North--a bear who teaches Leo how to read. When Leo returns home, he shares this wonderful knowledge with his parents and subjects.

The illustrations really are something to behold. The animals all have an innate dignity and the detail is rich. There is a Jan Brett quality to Conover's work that is most becoming. All in all, I'd recommend this more highly for the pictures than for the text, but it's generally a fine book.

5 out of 5 stars The Lion's Share is an amazing book!.......2000-08-31

Chris has written a tour de force. The pictures are carefully constructed and intelligently crafted and this book will enchant both children and adults. The story is fanciful and rich in verbal and visual beauty. There is an added factor, the story of Leo is a morality tale... Leo has learned to love and care deeply for books and that's an important message that parents and educators would like to impart to youngsters.

    5 out of 5 stars A ROARING good book!.......2000-05-10

What could a jet-set socialite from Manhattan have in common with a rugged, twenty-first century savage from South Dakota? The Timberose Ranch. Now Jake's gone and Cole isn't about to let Jake's absentee, citified daughter march in and throw it all away. It's simply a matter of paying her off or running her off, whichever comes first. He despises everything she stands for and vice-versa. When Tamara begins turning up in his bed, uninvited, unannounced, and unaware of how she gets there, their impasse explodes into a whole new dimension. Amid attacks of marauding mountain lions and a sinister plot to discredit and destroy them both, they must declare a pseudo peace to counteract the evil that threatens.
