Book Description

The book you hold in your hands is revolutionary, a groundbreaking exploration of the science of intention. It is also the first book to invite you, the reader, to take an active part in its original research. Drawing on the findings of leading scientists on human consciousness from around the world, The Intention Experiment demonstrates that thought is a thing that affects other things. Thought generates its own palpable energy that you can use to improve your life, to help others around you, and to change the world.

In The Intention Experiment, internationally bestselling author Lynne McTaggart, an award-winning science journalist and leading figure in the human consciousness studies community, presents a gripping scientific detective story and takes you on a mind-blowing journey to the farthest reaches of consciousness. She profiles the colorful pioneers in intention science and works with a team of renowned scientists from around the world, including physicist Fritz-Albert Popp of the International Institute of Biophysics and Dr. Gary Schwartz, professor of psychology, medicine, and neurology at the University of Arizona, to determine the effects of focused group intention on scientifically quantifiable targets -- animal, plant, and human.

The Intention Experiment builds on the discoveries of McTaggart's first book, international bestseller The Field: The Quest for the Secret Force of the Universe, which documented discoveries that point to the existence of a quantum energy field. The Field created a picture of an interconnected universe and a scientific explanation for many of the most profound human mysteries, from alternative medicine and spiritual healing to extrasensory perception and the collective unconscious. The Intention Experiment shows you myriad ways that all this information can be incorporated into your life.

After narrating the exciting developments in the science of intention, McTaggart offers a practical program to get in touch with your own thoughts, to increase the activity and strength of your intentions, and to begin achieving real change in your life. After you've begun to realize the amazing potential of focused intention, and the times when it is most powerful, McTaggart invites you to participate in an unprecedented experiment: Using The Intention Experiment website to coordinate your involvement and track results, you and other participants around the world will focus your power of intention on specific targets, giving you the opportunity to become a part of scientific history.

The Intention Experiment redefines what a book does. It is the first "living" book in three dimensions. The book's text and website are inextricably linked, forming the hub of an entirely self-funded research program, the ultimate aim of which is philanthropic. An original piece of scientific investigation that involves the reader in its quest, The Intention Experiment explores human thought and intention as a tangible energy -- an inexhaustible but simple resource with an awesome potential to focus our lives, heal our illnesses, clean up our communities, and improve the planet.

The Intention Experiment also forces you to rethink what it is to be human. As it proves, we're connected to everyone and everything, and that discovery demands that we pay better attention to our thoughts, intentions, and actions. Here's how you can.

5 out of 5 stars FASCINATING..........2007-10-02

"The Intention Experiment" by Lynn McTaggart provides fascinating insights on intentional living. This book shows you how thought can affect your life. In essence thought is an energy that has the potential to transform your own life as well as help others.

Focused group intention is also shown to be a highly powerful tool in affecting animals, plants and humans.

Also, the reader is invited to become involved in a research experiment about the power of human thought.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-09-26

This book has a wonderful compilation of scientific studies about intention! It is very easy to read and understand. I was amazed at the
scientific research that has been completed in this area, and even more
surprised that so few of us are aware of this research.

Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-09-13

You may believe the reports in the book or you might just be a blind defender of the "offcial" science, but in both cases this is a book to read.
I will suggest it to all my friends.

4 out of 5 stars Advancing the body of knowledge.......2007-09-10

This is a wonderful book, bringing forth highly complex knowledge in a digestible form. It helps if the reader is analytical by nature. Thank you to Lynne Taggart for her writing style and depth of coverage of the topic. I am learning from this book how and why prayer works.

5 out of 5 stars Could You Imagine?.......2007-09-10

Picture this... A World with Peace, a World with Love, A World where EVERYONE has enough. If I am to understand what Lynne McTaggart is saying here, then I am to understand that a simple change in Our Collective thoughts 'could' change Our World. Peace, Love, Harmony. Groovy.

I hate to write such a negative review but i read the first 5 volumes before giving up on the sixth. I broke a cardinal personal rule of never giving up on books. The first volume was OK and each slowly got worst. I wanted to learn about Buddhism, not how a young man the author met was actually 1000 years old and other nonsense.

Please read any books by the Dalai Lama or Thich Nhat Han.

Book Description

Why is it that our current twenty-first century a.d. is so similar to the twenty-first century B.C.? At a time when religious fanaticism and a clash of civilizations raise the specter of a nuclear Armageddon, many ask: Is history destined to repeat itself? What does the future hold? Will biblical prophecies come true, and if so, when?

Ever since Zecharia Sitchin, in his first trailblazing book The 12th Planet, brought to life the Sumerian civilization and its record of the Annunaki—the extraterrestrials who had come to Earth from their planet Nibiru, fashioned mankind, and gave us civilization and religion—questions have abounded. Are the ancient gods still here, or did they leave? Will they return? What will happen then? Will there be another Deluge or Apocalypse when Nibiru meets Earth? What about “Planet X” and the Mayan 2012? What about Jesus?

In The End of Days, a masterwork that required thirty years of additional research, Sitchin dares to give the answers by presenting compelling new evidence that the Past is the Future—that mankind and its planet Earth are subject to a predetermined cyclical Celestial Time.

Tracing historical events from the messianic fervor and use of nuclear weapons in the twenty-first century B.C., Sitchin resolves ancient enigmas like the Nazca Lines or the origin and significance of the Cross, the Fishes, and the Chalice, places in context the events of the Last Supper and hidden clues like those in Da Vinci's painting, explains the space-related reasons for the everlasting centrality of Jerusalem, and—following in the footsteps of Sir Isaac Newton—deciphers the Time Code in the books of Daniel and Revelation and of the Day of the Lord and the End of Days prophecies.

In this remarkable and relevant conclusion to his bestselling The Earth Chronicles series, Sitchin shatters perceptions and uses history to reveal what is to come at The End of Days.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Awesome FICTIONAL work........2007-09-26

What a great story! From a purely fictional point of view that is. But please don't take Mr. Sitchin seriously. Yes, he's done a lot of work and he's very passionate and I believe HE believes all that's in his books. But if you want facts, follow the work of true scholars.

There are plenty of reviews on this book and even more opinions I'm sure.

What's more important than a review is a call to reason. People - please... Just because you want or need to believe something is true doesn't mean that it is. When dealing with history and languages, I would highly recommend reviewing the work of true and accomplished scholars. Do this and you will likely get complete (as much as is possible) and the most accurate picture of the past as one can.

His credentials in no way qualify him to make such claims. If nothing else, look at his credentials and ask yourself how is this man qualified to make such claims?

I drive a fancy sports car and can give you the exact specs on the engine and body, from top to bottom. I could WOW the best of them with all the tech talk about the engine, transmission, suspension, etc. I could even carry on a detailed conversation with the mechanic if I had to. But I can tell you with certainty that if I was given a shop full of tools all to myself I couldn't fix my fancy sports car if it broke.

If you take your car into the shop be worked on, do you want the guy who talks like he knows what he's doing working on your car or do you want the guy with all the certificates on the wall that's PROVEN he knows what he's doing working on your car?

This is the case with Mr. Sitchin and his books. He talks a good line but has no credentials to prove he's anything more than just a fanciful talker.

Mr. Sitchin graduated from the University of London, majoring in economic history and he was a journalist and editor in Israel. How does this make him an expert in ancient Hebrew and the old Testament? In Sumerian culture? IMHO, this is a classic case of someone learning enough about an ancient language "to be dangerous". He absolutely sounds like he knows what he's talking about and sadly that fools a whole lot of people.

Like many, I was very taken initially with his ideas. But too much didn't add up. After months of research I was quite disappointed to realize that the basis of at least some of his theories (the ones I researched anyway) were too full of holes to be true.

There is an upside though - this a GREAT fictional story!

Real seekers of truth will check multiple sources and validate claims from many different sources. Do this and in time you will find the truth.

If you are looking to be entertained, look no further.

3 out of 5 stars A LITTLE BIT CONFUSING..........2007-09-13

The book somewhat confused me because of some claims. The author also states that the reader should read his other books to understand this book clearly. Nevertheless, I still admire Zecharia Sitchin for all his efforts.

5 out of 5 stars A Keeper.......2007-09-06

Buying a book is one thng haveing it be worth the storage space another. This is worth the storage space.

1 out of 5 stars Creative .......2007-08-27

Sitchin can spin a tale of fiction that is inspired to say the least. He is universally hated in the astronomical, archaeological, and historical communities for his attempt to pass pseudo science off as fact. If fact is not what you are after, then buy this book and invest in a tinfoil hat.

3 out of 5 stars A little disappointing ****** SPOILER ALERT *******.......2007-08-21

I've read all of Sitchin's books and was always pleased at the conclusion of each one. They were like adventure quests of hidden knowledge with the worst case scenario being a nice scifi story (and what a story!). This one left me wanting. I believe he just wanted to put his two cents in about 2012 even though he doesn't think it will be a date that anything significant happens. I think he's got a better theory floating around in his head but didn't want to share it for whatever reason. The beginning of the book is a bit boring as he has to tell the back story. The middle is more interesting with more detail about the tales of the annunaki and their petty power struggles. The end was a bitter disappointment to me. His theory on the davinci last supper painting, in which he thinks the space between jesus and mary/john is where elijah should be and the missing cup being the grail that elijah took, is just lacking. To me the alternate grail theories make more sense and have better documentation. Obviously this book is a must read if you've read the rest of the series as how can one not read the supposed last one but it doesn't hold up to his prior standard. When does Sitchin think the annunaki will return? Sometime in the age of pisces .... and that only leaves up to anywhere from 100 years from now to about 800 years from now depending on if you are going by the math or by sight.

Thich Nhat Hanh's writing is deceptive in its subtlety. He'll go on and on with stories about tree-hugging or metaphors involving raw potatoes; he'll tell you how to eat mindfully, even how to breathe and walk; he'll suggest looking closely at a flower and to see the sun as your heart. As the Zen teacher Richard Baker commented, however, Nhat Hanh is "a cross between a cloud, a snail, and piece of heavy machinery." Sooner or later, it begins to sink in that Nhat Hanh is conveying a depth of psychology and a world outlook that require nothing less than a complete paradigm shift. Through his cute stories and compassionate admonitions, he gradually builds up to his philosophy of interbeing, the notion that none of us is separately, but rather that we inter-are. The ramifications are explosive. How can we mindlessly and selfishly pursue our individual ends, when we are inextricably bound up with everyone and everything else? We see an enemy not as focus of anger but as a human with a complex history, who could be us if we had the same history. Suffice it to say, that after reading Peace Is Every Step, you'll never look at a plastic bag the same way again, and you may even develop a penchant for hugging trees. --Brian Bruya

Book Description

In the rush of modern life, we tend to lose touch with the peace that is available in each moment. World-renowned Zen master, spiritual leader, and author Thich Nhat Hanh shows us how to make positive use of the very situations that usually pressure and antagonize us. For him a ringing telephone can be a signal to call us back to our true selves. Dirty dishes, red lights, and traffic jams are spiritual friends on the path to "mindfulness" -- the process of keeping our consciousness alive to our present experience and reality. The most profound satisfactions, the deepest feelings of joy and completeness lie as close at hand as our next aware breath and the smile we can form right now.

Lucidly and beautifully written, Peace Is Every Step contains commentaries and meditations, personal anecdotes and stories from Nhat Hanh's experiences as a peace activist, teacher, and community leader. It begins where the reader already is -- in the kitchen, office, driving a car, walking a part -- and shows how deep meditative presence is available now. Nhat Hanh provides exercises to increase our awareness of our own body and mind through conscious breathing, which can bring immediate joy and peace. Nhat Hanh also shows how to be aware of relationships with others and of the world around us, its beauty and also its pollution and injustices. the deceptively simple practices of Peace Is Every Step encourage the reader to work for peace in the world as he or she continues to work on sustaining inner peace by turning the "mindless" into the mindFUL.

"This book of illuminating reminders bid us to reorient the way we look at the world...toward a humanitarian perspective." --Publisher Weekly

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Simple and Beautiful.......2007-09-11

This book is very simple and beautiful. I would highly recommend it to beginning Buddhists and those who are new to meditation. Actually, I'd recommend it to everyone. Thich Nhat Hanh gives good suggestions for living and bringing peace to your life and the lives of others through simple mindfulness.

5 out of 5 stars Think Less, Smile More, Realize Peace.......2007-08-17

"If we just act with awareness and integrity, our art will flower, and we don't have to talk about it at all. When we know how to be peace, we find that art is a wondeful way to share our peacefulness. Artistic expression will take place in one way or another, but the being is essential. So we must get back to ourselves, and when we have joy and peace in ourselves, our creations of art will be quite natural, and they will serve the world in a positive way."

Initially, I wanted to pull the first sentence to begin this thought on Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh's book about making positive use of the situations that pressure and upset us, Peace Is Every Step.

But I didn't want to stop once I started typing. A pleasure of transcription is being in the original words of the writer or speaker. Following an individual's syntax, punctuation, and usage to physically recreate it puts the typist very close to the thougth process itself. "The being" that is essential is the condition of being a seamless part of the world you're in in every moment. To be in the here and now is to not be in the past with its burdens or in the future with its unknowns. To look at a flower is to see a flower, not the raw material of a poem or painting. To be with a friend is to see him or her as an individual, not as a producer of some sort who can yield you some benefit. As Whitman said, the world is too much with us. It's with us in our thoughts all the time as we imagine new ways to exploit and manipulate it and manage it for our well-being. Forget about all that and see it for what it is and you find yourself in a simpler, more peaceful place. Do that, and you are the peace itself.

Hanh's book has a wonderful set of meditations on dealing with fear, anger, other people. Essentially, he explains, all these negative feelings are the result of dualistic thinking, of seeing ourselves as opposite and outside all other things. Western thinking would have us believe that the ultimate existential truth is that we are alone in the world; Eastern thinking teaches that we are in the world and that is enough.

"If you can refrain from hoping, you can bring yourself entirely into the present moment and discover joy that is already here," Hanh says on this subject. Indeed, "we don't need the future. We can smile and relax. Everything we want is right here in the present moment."

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2007-07-13

I enjoyed reading this book as I am just beginning to learn about Buddhism and insight meditation. It helped me to understand more about what it is to live in a mindful way. It's a light read, and I anticipate that it will be something to pick up when I need a little refresher on how to be mindful.

4 out of 5 stars a warm and peaceful embrace.......2007-03-19

A sweet and touching book that encourages fullness and peace in every moment. I've long admired the author for his loving embrace of life and humanity in spite of his tragic war experiences. His life is a testament to the sincerity of his words.

5 out of 5 stars Peace of mind be with you........2007-02-14

I'm still savoring the book. It has tiny chapters with choice points to consider: ways you might want to change to to improve your life. It's written by a peaceful man and conveys its peace in each section. He shows you ways to simplify your life and enjoy it more. It doesn't force a religious belief.
I highly recommend this book for a beginner on the path or a seasoned traveler. You'll find peace of mind with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, espically for beginners!.......2007-09-26

Before i bought this book, i didnt know a thing about wine. After completing it, i feel as if i am a sommelier. There are lots of pictures and helpful sidebar text to explain things in more detail. Very easy format and language that anyone can read and understand. It covers all types of wine from USA, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain mostly, however it does mention others briefly. I would recommend this book to someone who wants to learn about wine but doesn't know where to start. This will get the ball rolling for you very well.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT compilation about wines.......2007-08-28

I came across this book during my search for a guide book on wines that would be both informative and visually friendly. In his updated 2007 edition, Zraly continues to provide a great wealth of information to anyone looking to learn more about wines -- from history, geographic/cultural origin, techniques, pairings, to recommendations on specific labels/wineries. The combination of factual information and recommendations of his favorites makes for a more interesting and engaging "wine course". Futhermore, the colorful pictures and the binding of the hardback make this for a great coffee table book.
Echoing the comments of other reviewers, I would like to reiterate that this is a perfect guide for beginners and a great compilation to have as part of any sommelier's collection.

5 out of 5 stars Zraly Review.......2007-08-11

This book is an excellent source for information for any wine drinker. It explains the world of wine much better and gives a general overview of all the most important wine making regions.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, easy to read.......2007-07-27

This is an awesome book for anyone really wanting to know all about wine. Answers any question you may have about every aspect of wine and the winemaking process.

5 out of 5 stars Twenty years and still a great book.......2007-06-27

I purchased my first copy of "Windows on the World" 20 years ago as it was the perfect introduction to wine book of its time. Zraly's basic approach in easing the novice through the pleasure of wine has made it the book I have recommended most often. I've probably given a dozen copies away over the years to friends who have expressed an interest in learning more about wine. Readers will be introduced to a good overview of the great wine regions of the world, the wine making process, pairing, proper stemware and more. A must buy. Book Description

I Am Not Perfect is a simple  statement of profound truth, the first step toward  understanding the human condition, for to deny  your essential imperfection is to deny yourself and  your own humanity. The spirituality of  imperfection, steeped in the rich traditions of the Hebrew  prophets and Greek thinkers, Buddhist sages and  Christian disciples, is a message as timeless as it is  timely. 5 out of 5 stars One of the most important books I've read.......2007-10-06

I found this book at a retreat (Manresa) a few years ago and have purchased at least a couple dozen of these books for friends since then, with consistently enthusiastic feedback.

I really don't have the proper words to capture the meaning or importance of this book. It's a slow, intense, delicious read ... kind of like eating a very rich Belgian chocolate.

If you like this book, then you may like this one, too:

This is a remarkably wise book, whatever your spiritual history. From Desert Fathers and Thomas Merton to the Tao Te Ching, its scope is broad and charged with a vision of understanding that stands at the base of any effort to the growth of the soul through the five indices: prayer, observance, disciline, thought and action.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding and Acceptance.......2007-05-14

Ernie Kurtz has written a comprehensive book about the acceptance of self and our human frailities that brings us into a closer relationship with a higher power and deepens our spirituality.

Sometimes over complicated and a bit confusing, but carefully
documented.

2 out of 5 stars Too much chaff, not enough wheat.......2007-08-17

This is the kind of book that gives historical revisionists and truthseekers a bad name--specifically the "conspiracy nut" slur. While the author may or may not be sincere, a look at the cover is enough to give you a sense of how serious or not serious a presentation is contained within. Certainly there is much about history and society that we are routinely lied to about and historical facts that are suppressed so as to protect those with the power to pull the invisible strings fettering the world. This book documents much of that, but unfortunately delves into much disinformation and in the end will leave people confused--perhaps aware of several legitimate issues they had not known about before but also distracted by a series of unfounded claims muddying the waters. I put this in the same category as the works of David Icke, of reptilian shape-shifter fame...

William Cooper did an outstand job in writing this book. He has a wealth of knowledge that will assist the reader in researching other books that supports his claims.

Not a read for anyone who doesn't know or does know what others claim or wish to know. But if you read this book and it confirms what you did know or didn't know it may be worth the time reading. However, when you do buy this unknown known it will lead others to watch you over to see what else you know and what your planing to do with what you now know.....be careful buying it, the book will lead a cloud over you.

I sell Italian wine, so this is primarily a reference book. This is one of 3 or 4 that we use to keep up with what the world thinks of our winw. Invaluable . . . Bur next year, I think I will go online and find the information I need. I can get it from my producers. Thanks

4 out of 5 stars important resource for italian wine reviews.......2007-06-14

while the impartiality of the Gambero Rosso Guide has long been questioned, this guide nonetheless is an important reference for anyone interested in Italian wines. Few wineries in Italy do NOT make it into the guide, which in itself is valuable. Secondly, the actual reviews of the wines are generally informative. Whether or not you believe in the validity of a review system based on 1-3 glasses, there is a wealth of information here, and often regarding wines and vintages that have not been reviewed in the more "authoritative" (for lack of a better word) international publications. The reviews are also timely: whereas Spectator or the Advocate tend to be eternally stuck a vintage behind distibutors' and retail availability, the Gambero Rosso is usually up-to-date with the latest vintage.

I have been purchasing the "Guide" every year for many years... For any lover

Book Description

In this comprehensive and practical guide, the secrets of the ancient science of Tantra become available to a contemporary audience for the first time. Confined to small, hidden mystery schools for centuries, and often misunderstood and misinterpreted today. Tantra is not just a collection of techniques to enhance sexual experience. As Osho shows in these pages, it is a complete science of self-realizatoin, based on the cumulative wisdom of centuries of exploration into the meaning of life and consciousness. Tantra-the very word means "technique"-is a set of powerful, transformative tools that can be used to bring new meaning andjoy to every aspect of our daily lives.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Truth.......2007-10-15

The Tantra is the most scientific book of wisdom and spirituality that has ever existed. It has become my "bible" though I detest all organized religions and deny the existence of a personal god. The knowledge that the Tantra imparts is precious, timeless because it is drawn from true experience; its 112 techniques(of which sex is only a small part), are all workable hypothesis that can be tested--should you have the mind. Interpreted correctly, the Tantra can never harm and can only help. A work of extremely subtle genius, the book is disarming in its simplistic presentation of matters of tremendous depth. If one is not humble, one will surely miss the point. Genius must be brought to any effort to take from the Tantra what it so innocently offers. Misinterpretation is the very real danger. And so we are blessed to have Osho open these ancient pages and analyze each Sutra (sermon). He senses instinctively what is being said here and how it directly applies to our current misery--"modern" man--same old monkey. The fearful human mind that the Tantra addresses is now rushing about in cars, banging away at computers and amassing nuclear weapons. In Osho we have a fearless intricately comprehensive intellect warmed with insight and compassion. Osho's style is deliberately breezy, almost silly sometimes, because Osho's is a deeply, frighteningly serious mind. If you have the courage to follow him in his incisive reasoning and consider his astonishing conclusions--you begin to sense that there's much more to Osho than meets the eye, that God has outdone Shakespeare in this wisest of fools, this Osho who seems always to be grinning just a bit, laughing at the whole damn thing. Agree or disagree with him, we are fortunate, better off, for having encountered Osho, for having read him.

5 out of 5 stars If I could only own one book, this would be it........2007-09-17

Osho's Book of Secrets is truly a remarkable text and in many ways is the real bible that should be left in every hotel room. If I was only allowed to have one book on my shelf, this would be it.

The book is a transcription of Osho's talks on the 112 Techniques of meditation which are as old as yoga itself. These are the 112 ways in which one can transcend their mind and enter the bliss and truth of meditation. For every person there is at least one technique that will work to unlock the stress of the mind and allow the person to enter into meditation. The beauty of this book is the simplicity of explanation which makes what could be an esoteric subject easily accessible to anyone.

I have been on a serious path of meditation and yoga for a few years now, having recently returned from a 10 day silent meditation retreat in India, and this is the book I would recommend to all that are looking to try meditation. As my practice has gone deeper, my own understanding of the text has deepened with it. All of these techniques are there to try, not just to read and understand intellectually. They are there to transform you, to help you attain to your inner being and blissfulness.

Many other yoga and meditation books spend too much time on ancient texts and commentary and tend to make a simple subject seem overly complex and esoteric. Not this one. Read this if you want to understand the real deal of what meditation is and give it a try for yourself.

5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Tantra the way of elevation..........2007-07-29

Out of 112 there must be a technique -- more than one; one is absolutely certain, but my experience is that more than one will be applicable to every human being. And the easiest way is just to go through, read them, and any technique that suddenly strikes you "This is it!" -- give it a try, at least for twenty-one days.
If it starts working, then forget everything, other techniques. Go on working on it. It does not matter how many techniques you try. What matters is that you try one technique to its very end, to its ultimate depth. And if you succeed in one technique, then every other technique becomes very easy.
If the first technique took six months, the other techniques may take just one week, because now you have reached to the exact point. You know the place, you know the space that meditation creates. This is a different path leading to the same space. And as you try a few other techniques, the time will become less.

5 out of 5 stars Magnum Opus on Meditation.......2007-06-22

This book is a must read book for all those who are intrested in meditation. Osho introduces 112 methods of meditation and shares intresting insights about these techniques. He also talks of other related traditions who adopt some of these techniques as their core practice. Although the order of these meditations are not as per the original Vigyana Bhairava Tantra, osho creates a logical grouping of meditations like meditations on breath, light, sound. Each chapter is followed by a question & answer session related to the meditations discussed in the previous chapter. This helps the reader in clarifying many of the aspects of meditations. Some of the meditations are very simple and is presented in a non-ritualistic format, typical of Osho.

5 out of 5 stars This book saved me...........2007-02-28

In 2002,my world as I understood it,ceased. I questioned everything I had come to believe. With my mind and thoughts swirling around in limbo,I paced
the rows of books in my favorite store and a single book literally fell to my feet. I picked it up,read the back of the cover, and bought it. It was money well spent. Since then I have read it three more times,I pick up something I missed everytime I read it."I" am forever changed.

Prince Arjuna faced a dilemma that many face sooner or later--whether to take action that is necessary yet morally ambiguous. The difference is that Arjuna's action was to wage war against his own family. With the armies arrayed, Arjuna loses his nerve. Krishna, his charioteer and incarnation of divine consciousness, begins to teach him the nature of God and of himself, that Arjuna can attain liberation through union with God, and that there are several available paths. And so the most famous and revered of all Hindu Scriptures goes on to teach the paths of knowledge, devotion, action, and meditation, becoming the seed for all the Hindu systems of philosophy and religion that followed. For all of its profundity, Eknath Easwaran manages to translate the Gita in easy prose that neither panders nor obscures. Coupled with his thorough introduction, Easwaran's version comes off on all the levels it should: as a guide to action, devotional Scripture, a philosophical text, and inspirational reading. So what does Arjuna finally do? He follows his dharma, of course, as we all must. --Brian Bruya

Book Description

The most familiar and best-loved of all the scriptures of India in a practical, accessible translation, with illuminating introductions to each chapter. 240 pages

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very insightful and readable.......2007-10-13

I have no previous experience with this faith or their literature, and I thought that Easwaran did a wonderful job of providing the necessary background information to the text so that the layperson could understand what was going on. Those in-between chapters, along with the introduction, were indispensable, and unfortunately, all too forgotten in most holy literature and translations these days.

The story itself is legendary, and I can see why. Great job.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable religious studies and reference text.......2007-09-02

Expertly and accessibly translated into English by teacher Eknath Easwaran (1910-1999), The Bhagavad Gita, or "The Song of the Lord" is the classic East Indian Hindu scripture, which begins on a battlefield upon which the anguished warrior Arjuna questions his spiritual guide, Sri Krishna, about the most crucial matters of life and death. Easwaran's translation of The Bhagavad Gita retains a lyrical, poetic flow, and is supplemented by a foreword, an introduction, and notes on the meanings of the original Sanskrit terms, and a glossary. An invaluable religious studies and reference text, which belongs side by side on religious studies shelves along with annotated copies of the Bible, the Koran, and other core spiritual scripture.

5 out of 5 stars An Accessible Key to Liberation.......2007-06-24

The beauty of Eknath Eswaran's eloquent translation lies in its easy accessibility. It is not necessary that the reader be conversant in Eastern spiritually to benefit from this fine volume. Easwaran offers clear and understandable explanations for terms that may be unfamiliar to the novice Western reader and supplements those explanations with an extensive glossary. Eswaran's introduction and chapter summaries aid the reader to move their focus from the external battlefield where Arjuna and Krishna carry on their conversation, to the inner battle for self-mastery each of us faces. Under Eswaran's expert tutelage, Arjuna's quest for liberation quickly becomes our own. Easwaran's chapter introductions go beyond a mere summary of the chapter contents and include information that will aid the reader in putting the information to use in their life. The primary theme of the Gita is renunciation. But as Easwaran points out, it is not a renunciation of material things or of pleasure that is required, but the attachments and aversions we have constructed that enslave us to them. Every spiritual seeker would be benefited by adding Eknath Easwaran's translations of the Bhagavad-Gita and the Upanishads to their bookshelf.

Lee & Steven Hager are the authors of Quantum Prodigal Son: Revisiting Jesus' Parable of the Prodigal Son from the Perspective of Quantum Mechanics

5 out of 5 stars Easwaran's translation has always been a classic guide.......2007-06-18

I was under the impression that, as a second edition, this book would actually be slightly revised and updated from the original 1985 edition. As far as I can tell it isn't, except for the addition of a foreword. The changes seem to be cosmetic: The cover design is much improved and in a fetching color. The volume is larger, making it much easier to hold open and bookmark pages. The typeface is maybe a bit larger. Best of all, there is lots of space between lines, making the book not only highly readable, but leaving ample space for notes.

Within the next few months (fall of 2007), Nilgiri will release new editions of the Dhammapada and the Upanishads (with equally pleasing covers and copy features).

For readers who want more, I recommend Easwaran's three-volume deep exploration of the Gita (The Bhagavad Gita for Daily Living, in paperback). If you don't want to tackle all 3 large volumes (undoubtably an intimidating task), the first volume will stand alone.

5 out of 5 stars The Gita; Simplicity @ The Edge of Complexity.......2007-06-17

Easwaran takes on a pretty stiff challenge in bringing Sanskrit to the English. This book takes on some very "heady" work and brings it to a level to which we can all connect. This, I would say, is an important book. The notion of accepting our path and stepping into those shoes for which we were born and guided to wear is made very convincing--made undeniable even. If nothing else is gained from this book than that enlightenment and acceptance; then reading it is time well spent.
