Here's another Star Wars spinoff novel, a brisk and extremely uncomplicated action-adventure romp set on planet Coruscant immediately before the events of The Phantom Menace. After a few setting-up exercises, it's essentially a prolonged chase sequence whose implacable pursuer is Darth Maul--the almost absurdly villainous-looking Sith Lord with the biggest lightsaber and worst makeup job in the entire saga to date.

The plot? Insidiously evil Darth Sidious is poised to launch the Naboo trade blockade featured in The Phantom Menace. But one of his alien henchmen has sneaked away to betray this scheme and must die. So must the traitor's contacts, smalltime crook Lorn Pavan and his uppity droid, I-Five. Likewise Darsha Assant, the female Jedi Knight apprentice who gets entangled with Pavan through either mind-boggling coincidence or the mysterious ways of the Force.

Michael Reaves makes a reasonably slick job of all this nonsense and is not afraid of clichés. Plenty of characters have wooden lines like "I've got a bad feeling about this," and "Too many questions, and not enough answers." Meanwhile in the Jedi council, Yoda makes characteristic remarks: "A good choice he would be... No accident this was."

Unfortunately, the well-known story line of The Phantom Menace defuses suspense in Shadow Hunter. That trade blockade has to happen despite the good folks' doomed heroics, and horrible Darth Maul (already far more powerful and deadly than the puny opposition he faces here) is fated to win out. Pleasantly Surprised.......2007-07-23

I wasn't expecting much from this book quite honestly. Being that The Phantom Menace was really such a let down, mostly because of the lack of darth maul, a very promising villain, I started this book with some skepticism. Couple that with the fact that it's a prequel to TPM, the ending is more or less 'spoiled'.

But I was quite wrong. This is a VERY good star wars read that fleshes out the criminally under-utilized Darth Maul character much better than the Episode 1 film did.

I really enjoyed the new characters in the book, namely Lorn Pavan and I 5, his droid counterpart. Lorn reminded me a bit of Han Solo. Maybe not as big a scoundrel with a smaller part to play, he was still the reluctant hero which Han has always embodied so well. Add to that the comic releif added by the quick witted I Five droid and there some very good dialogue between the two.

I also enjoyed the Jedi Padawan, Darsha Assant (as it turns out she's also in Cloak of Deception as a cameo of sorts, but I'm reading that after the fact, but it still doesn't take anything away from the Darth Maul book), whom is young and naive, yet brave and very fun to read.

Darth Maul is just what I'd expect him to be: Cold, calculating, ruthless, but not without his honor.

Even though we know how this book has to end ultimately being that it precedes the Phantom Menace, I still like how Reaves tied everything up.

"Shadow Hunter" pretty much says it all!.......2007-04-17

Fans of Episode I were also fascinated by the mysterious Darth Maul, the first Sith apprentice shown since Darth Vader in the classic trilogy. But don't assume like I first did that this is a story with a villain protagonist. While we are shown some of the thoughts and motivations of the title character, this story has two original main protagonists: Darsha Assant (Jedi padawan), and Lorn Pavan (underworld information broker). Following initiatives provided by his Sith Master, Darth Maul is the driving force behind the plot of this novel, a vile killer hunting the protagonists through the undercity of Coruscant. By the time I realized that the heroes must be doomed to failure (to maintain continuity with the movie), I couldn't put this thriller down anyway. Just like the prequels with respect to the original films, it's not how this story ends but the journey there that makes this novel so good. This action-packed tragedy also contains interesting dispositions of Sith and Jedi philosophies. The story takes place soon after Cloak of Deception and ends with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan preparing to leave for Naboo (leading to the opening of Episode I).

The paperback edition also contains an bonus short story by James Luceno entitled "Darth Maul: Saboteur" which takes place before Cloak of Deception. "Saboteur" sets up some elements of that novel, introducing Tarkin. The end of "Saboteur" along with the beginning of Shadow Hunter explain Maul's absence from the story of Cloak of Deception, which remotely ties in with the novel Shadows of the Empire (below). If you plan on reading both Cloak of Deception and Shadow Hunter, my suggestion is to read the "Saboteur" short story first, then the Deception novel, then Shadow Hunter to maintain chronological order.

I highly recommend the following 5-star novels that are extremely relevant to the film series:

Great read. Filled with action, good length. Only regret is that Darth Maul didn't meet anyone that really challenging skill set.

Read the E-book in the rear of the book first, it precedes shadow hunter.

Unecessary and frivolous, but still fun. .......2007-01-26

This book is not integral to the plot of Star Wars in any way. Don't feel obliged to read it. In fact, the whole plot concerns covering up information. Information that anyone who saw TPM already knows, so nothing important actually happens.

If you're into Darth Maul, and I know that there are plenty of people who are, you'll like this piece of Maul action and insight. You really get to see him on the job, and get some nice looks into his psyche. Although fanboys may be as frustrated as he is at how often he seems to be eluded yet again for the sake of continuing the story.

Otherwise, the book is just an exciting game of cat and mouse, a wild chase through the dangerous and mysterious depths of Coruscant.

One thing I'll say is that the author tends to go overboard with adding new things. The back of the book will tell you that there are exciting new creature never before seen, and it's true. They're also never see again. I think the author got too excited about making up new things to add to Star Wars, and the end result is something like a fan-fic, when they should have just tied the book to the sage through existing source material.

Overall, it's a fun read. Interesting, exciting, and Maul-a-rific. It's not very well written, and it's extremely unimportant and insignificant, but still, a fun, easy read.

Darth Maul: Great Character - Not so Great Story.......2007-01-06

As much as I loved the new characters in the book, I would have liked to have seen more of Darth Maul. There are often large gaps between his appearances. However, I realize it could be difficult to have him around all the time and keep it interesting. Maul can be a rather flat character if not used sparingly.

I also would have liked to have seen more background on Maul. Why does he hate the Jedi so much? How did he hook up with Sidious? What was his training like? Some is given on this, but not a lot. Most of that was told in the Darth Maul Journal, something many fans will probably not read. It should have been saved for this.

The timing of this book is also confusing. It takes place days, if not hours, before the Naboo blockade. The whole point of the novel is that the Sith don't want the Jedi to know about their existence or the blockade. However, just a couple of days later, they completely reveal themselves to the Jedi and their plans. If the events were so close to happening that they were almost unstoppable, why did they care if some little information broker tried to sell the info? If it had been months before, their concern would have been more understandable. The closeness in chronology kind of takes away from the urgency of the events in the book.

Final Thoughts: Only read this book if you are a Darth Maul junkie. If you read this book for any other reason, you will be let down. Reading this book is not necessary to stay abreast of the Star Wars galaxy.

This important military document presents the Department of Defense's roadmap for developing and employing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Unmanned Combat Air Vehicles (UCAVs) over the next 25 years (2002 to 2027). As with any new technology, there is naturally some reluctance to transition to a radically new capability. The overarching goal of this roadmap, in concert with the Defense Planning Guidance (DPG), is to define clear direction to the Services and Departments for a logical, systematic migration of mission capabilities to a new class of military tools. The goal is to address the most urgent mission needs that are supported both technologically and operationally by various UAV systems. Some missions can be supported by the current state of the art in unmanned technology where the capabilities of current or near-term DoD assets are sufficient and the risk to DoD members is relative low. Other mission areas, however, are in desperate need of additional capability and present high risk to aircraft crews. These mission areas, highlighted in this roadmap, will receive significant near-term effort by the Department. Another Fantastic Read.......2006-11-08

Ms. Hunter has written yet another superb novel with Shadow Valley. I really am in awe of her talent, and consider her to be one of the best writers in America today. Thus it is that when I read nasty, one star, reviews of her books, that I am forced to conclude that whomever posted it has got to be a jealous, frustrated, would-be author. What a shame.

Suspense..........2006-02-16

Many people tend to think of Gwen Hunter as writing Romantic Suspense. If that's what you're looking for, don't read this book. Sure, there's an emotional connection between two people, but this book is basically a suspense novel, not a romance. But if you're looking for a search-and-rescue story that will have a fure characters you'll purely hate, as well as some remarkable and admirable ones, this book's for you.

I'm a big fan of this author's Dr. Rae Lynch series so I was disappointed that her latest was not a Dr. Rae book. After having it sit on my shelf for months I finally read it. What a great read. It is a very engrossing thriller and it did not disappoint me at all. I liked the characters and I'm a big fan of secondary characters and this book had several I loved. I liked the look into the world of SAR and I'm glad it was the main focus of the book. There was a romance storyline but it was just enough to enjoy without being over done.

I'm really glad that I finally read this book.

The Shadow Hunters offers a glimpse at a world most of us don't know exists. Through haunting photos and text, it depicts the gathering of bird's nests from 400-foot perches in the caves of Western Thailand. These are the nests that are so highly prized in China for soup. The most expensive of these, made entirely of swiftlet saliva, contain an immune-boosting protein called mitogen. I was gratified to learn that the men who harvest the nests are seldom injured despite the obvious hazards involved in climbing bamboo poles to such heights. Sadly, the prospects for the swiftlets seem less safe: if nothing is done to regulate the nest gathering and destruction in nearby forests, the marvelous little swiftlets may well become extinct.

Raymond Hinkle, the stalker was an obsessive nonconformist who'd botched a case four months earlier, but this time he steps out of the shadows after Abby, a stalker of stalkers, got on his case. Years ago, he had stalked a young actress, but now his obsession was the star of a local network news team in L. A., a more accomplished celebrity. Michael Prescott has written IN DARK PLACES, COMES THE DARK and LAST BREATH. He is good at inducing terror and dangerous situations, making you feel like you are there. He admits that he went from a rough synopsis to the finished book with the help of his fans. How nice to be so humble.

Another Great Michael Prescott Book.......2005-01-30

Whoa. I loved this book. I actually screamed at one of the unexpected plot twists. I was so surprised. Fun, suspensful, escapist fiction, plenty of breaking and entering, sorting out clues in the mystery, etc. I sincerely hope to read more about Abby Sinclair's career "stalking stalkers" in many future Michael Prescott novels.

Prescott is a Magician.......2004-06-03

I only say that because he is the Master of Mis-Direction. He'll have you thinking that the story is going in one direction but suddenly, he takes you somewhere totally different. For example, he will develop a character and describe all of his or her great attributes but may mention one negative. However,that one negative might turn out to be the turning point of the novel.

This book is packed with excitement from beginning to end. If you are a fan of mystery and suspense, you won't be disappointed.

Highly Recommended!.......2002-02-10

Well, I'm impressed! I am a pretty jaded mystery reader, but Prescott managed to fake me out with this book. I liked it a lot, and wholeheartedly recommend it to lovers of good mysteries.
The heroine is Abby Sinclair. She is a hunter of stalkers. She insinuates herself into their lives and collects information that will bring them down before they can claim a victim. Abby is bright, extremely competent and amazingly resourceful. Prescott's villian, Raymond Hickle, is believable and well written, as is Hickle's quarry, a beautiful TV news reporter. This book is suspenseful, carefully crafted, gracefully written, and is guaranteed to keep you reading non stop until the end. I hope Prescott sees fit to bring Abby back in a sequel. Meanwhile, I have ordered his other three novels.

One Complaint.......2001-11-21

I have one major complaint regarding this book. It was so fantastic, so gripping I got 3 hours of sleep last night. I had to force myself to put the book down so I could sleep. At breakfast, I picked it up again only to realize when I surfaced that I now had only 1/2 hour to get a shower, get dressed and drive the 35 minute ride to work! This is the first book I have read by this author and it is not going to be the last. This was incredible! I am so glad I found this author! Thanks so much, Amazon, for the suggestions of authors or I would have missed this great book.

The Skinwalkers have organized the kidnapping of a baby. Little do they realize that the woman they kidnapped with the baby is not her mother but is actually wealthy heiress, Bailey Howard. Hunter Long's job is to find Bailey and the baby. Not only is he an excellent tracker and a Navajo Tribe Special Investigator, but he is also a member of the Brotherhood and Bailey's former lover. It's a race against time as Hunter tries to rescue both Bailey and baby Tara before the Skinwalkers cause even more damage.

SHADOW HUNTER is the third book in the Night Guardians series. I have a sneaking suspicion that I would have enjoyed this book even more had I read the previous two books, a situation I intend to rectify soon. SHADOW HUNTER is easily understood and enjoyable as a stand alone although it appears to have ongoing involvement from characters, particularly the members of the Brotherhood.

The concept of a group such as the Brotherhood joining together to fight Skinwalkers isn't necessarily a new one, but Linda Conrad puts her own spin on it to keep this theme fresh and entertaining. Stories about the Navajo and the Skinwalkers are always intriguing because of the beauty and harmony represented in the Navajo culture. Linda Conrad does a magnificent job at incorporating the need for harmony into the storyline, particularly into her character development. Some of the aspects of the war between the Skinwalkers and the Brotherhood seemed a bit unclear to me, but this may be a result of jumping into the middle of the series rather than starting at the beginning.

SHADOW HUNTER is a book well worth reading. The romance element is strong as Bailey and Hunter definitely connect. Linda Conrad writes a good, solid romance novel with enough suspense and paranormal aspects to keep fans of multiple genres happy with SHADOW HUNTER.

Wait for the movie and hope for better.......2001-05-24

I generally check the reader reviews here on Amazon before I buy a book because regular readers seem to be a better gauge than the blurbs on the book jacket.

In my opinion, though, Ronald N. Truco's book did far better here than it deserves.

The subtitle of the book is "A Profile of the Hunter and the Hunted." Add "and the Story of My Life" to that. After suffering through 37 pages, I could not stand to hear any more about why Turco became a psychiatrist, why or how he became a cop, or how close the police brotherhood is. I thought I was getting a book about criminal profiling; instead I seem to have stumbles on an autobiography of someone who happens to have been involved in some interesting cases - and it's a poorly written autobiography at that. The theme wanders all over the place, the author makes questionable claims ("The organized serial killer was originally an FBI concept, although I developed the idea in 1968 when I worked on a series of San Francisco homicides"), and frankly, I really don't care about a snowball fight Turco had with his brother Salvy. I want profiling, criminal minds, and investigation, as the book jacket promises.

Another reviewer wrote, "This is a highly recommended page-turner, a real psychological suspense-thriller." I have to disagree. The only page-turning suspense I felt was wondering when we were going to get to the good part, and the only thrill I felt was finding the book for a few bucks instead of the shelf price of $14.95.

As a reader, I expect good writing, accuracy, and for the author to keep his promises. As a writer, I understand how hard it is to write a decent book. After giving Turco my full attention for 197 pages, I present this book to you, true crime reader, as evidence that some people should be writers and others should stick to their paid professions as lawyers, physicians, or pro football players.

Turco's book could just as well have been titled "All About Me." Psychiatrists and their brethren apparently cannot resist centering on the aches and pains of their profession, while the work they do and how they do it takes a poor second. If you are interested in his struggles -childhood, domestic, soul - this is the book for you. If you are interested in psychological profiling, perhaps now that Dr. Turco has gotten so much off his chest he will write that book.

Engrossing book on forensic psychiatry and serial killers........1999-06-30

Let me begin by saying that I have always been a true crime/forensic detection fan, and have read about every book available on the subject. Shortly after moving to Vancouver, Washington, where the murders committed by Wesley Allen Dodd took place, I happened upon this book (ok, my husband works in a book store!). I was fascinated reading about these crimes committed in my own community, and I must say it was nice to read an intelligent study of forensic psychiatry/detection that was NOT written by Robert Ressler or John Douglas (though I do enjoy their works as well). This is not your typical true crime story, so if Ann Rule is more your style, you probably will not enjoy this book. It is much more of a study of the workings of the minds of the people who perpetrate these horrible crimes, which I find very intriguing!

What motivates a psychoanalyst to leave the comfort of his consulting room to enter the grisly world of police work? One can only guess as Dr. Turco reveals a personal psychobiography which is unique and fascinating, in and of itself. This is a highly recommended page-turner, a real psychological suspense-thriller. It also reveals existential and philosophical counterpoints, helping explain why people go into police work.
