Book Description

In uncovering the roots of modernism, a master historian shows us a hidden side of the Victorian era, the role of the bourgeois as reactionaries, revolutionaries, and middle-of-the-roaders in the passage of high culture toward modernism. "In the Victorian decades, the name bourgeois was at once a term of reproach and a source of self-respect." So Peter Gay opens his newest and perhaps most surprising work. For the Victorians we meet in this volume are not the stodgy, complacent characters of drawing-room comedy. They are instead a varied crowd, from the capitalists in the top tier of the bourgeoisie eager to be recognized as gentlemen or, better yet, dubbed as nobility to those at the bottom of the pile, the clerks and craftsmen mortally afraid of sinking into the mass of the proletariat. What they share is an anxiety, driven by their concern to advance up the social pyramid or at least to maintain the status they have achieved. Some of the individuals in this richly peopled narrative turn on their own class, none more bitterly than Gustave Flaubert; others celebrate their success, whether in Manchester or in Munich, by sponsoring symphony orchestras or establishing museums; still others become cultural hunters and gatherers, turning their newly acquired fortunes to the private accumulation of art, ranging from the "safe" works of the old masters to the daring innovations of the Impressionists. The stage is thus set for the explosion of modernism accompanied by an inevitable reaction against the subversive avant-garde of artists, composers, and writers as varied as Cezanne, Picasso, Stravinsky, Shaw, Ibsen, and Zola. No one reading this concluding volume of Peter Gay's magnificent revaluation of the nineteenth century will ever again use the term Victorian as a synonym for dull.

Pleasure Wars is the fifth and final volume in The Bourgeois Experience: Victoria to Freud, Peter Gay's searching inquiry into the ideas and sensibilities that dominated nineteenth-century culture. Richard Sennett, referring to the series as a whole, wrote that Peter Gay's "magisterial portrait of the Victorian bourgeoisie makes the past make emotional sense."

3 out of 5 stars And Finally, the End.......2005-03-17

This is book five of the five volume series. Yes, I have read them all. If I had to recommend two I would recommend the first volume(sex) and the third volume(agression).

I struggled with this volume, even though it is the shortest (240 pp.) by far of the five. Perhaps that's because the theme: bourgeois taste in art, was so dreadfully boring. There's not a single chapter I really enjoyed until the (last) chapter on the emergence of moderning. Or maybe that was because I was so close to the end.

So now I know plenty about the Victorian bourgeois. What can you say about them? That they defy easy categorization. But really, can't you say that about many subjects? Gay's focus on the journals of every day bourgeois as source material was fine, but over five volumes, I could have used some more "great men" and current events.

    Book Description

In late 1914, S. Ansky, the influential Jewish-Russian journalist and playwright, received a commission: to organize desperately needed relief for Jews who were caught between the warring armies of Russia, Germany, and the Austrian Empire. Thus began the extraordinary four-year journey meticulously documented here. In daily accounts, Ansky details his struggles to raise funds; to lobby and bribe at the tsar's court; to procure and transport goods to the towns conquered and reconquered by Cossacks, Germans, Polish mercenaries, and Russian revolutionaries. Ansky depicts scenes of devastation-convoys of refugees, towns looted and burned to the ground, villagers taken hostage and raped. Speaking to maids and ministers, farmers and recruits, doctors and profiteers, he hears and sees it all, as the tsar's army disintegrates and revolution sweeps across the land. Never before available in English, The Enemy at His Pleasure offers a powerful and poignant view of a world at war, and a vital addition to our record of the past.

    4 out of 5 stars A must-read.......2003-08-06

If you are interested in the 20th century history of Jews in Eastern Europe, then this is a must-read book. It is difficult to read as we are not familiar with the places, people, or events that Ansky spoke about. And these are not pleasant events to read about. But we need to know this things, if we are to understand what happened to our families during World War I, even before they were annihilated in World War II. I highly recommend this book to historians and genealogists alike.

      Book Description

In August 1934, young Cyril L. wrote to his friend Billy about all the exciting men he had met, the swinging nightclubs he had visited, and the vibrant new life he had forged for himself in the big city. He wrote, "I have only been queer since I came to London about two years ago, before then I knew nothing about it." London, for Cyril, meant boundless opportunities to explore his newfound sexuality. But his freedom was limite: he was soon arrested, simply for being in a club frequented by queer men.

Cyril's story is Matt Houlbrook's point of entry into the queer worlds of early twentieth-century London. Drawing on previously unknown sources, from police reports and newspaper exposés to personal letters, diaries, and the first queer guidebook ever written, Houlbrook here explores the relationship between queer sexualities and modern urban culture that we take for granted today. He revisits the diverse queer lives that took hold in London's parks and streets; its restaurants, pubs, and dancehalls; and its Turkish bathhouses and hotels—as well as attempts by municipal authorities to control and crack down on those worlds. He also describes how London shaped the culture and politics of queer life—and how London was in turn shaped by the lives of queer men. Ultimately, Houlbrook unveils the complex ways in which men made sense of their desires and who they were. In so doing, he mounts a sustained challenge to conventional understandings of the city as a place of sexual liberation and a unified queer culture.

A history remarkable in its complexity yet intimate in its portraiture, Queer London is a landmark work that redefines queer urban life in England and beyond.

“A ground-breaking work. While middle-class lives and writing have tended to compel the attention of most historians of homosexuality, Matt Houlbrook has looked more widely and found a rich seam of new evidence. It has allowed him to construct a complex, compelling account of interwar sexualities and to map a new, intimate geography of London.”—Matt Cook, The Times Higher Education Supplement

The images that are often associated with the Ashcan school of artists are the more sombre depictions of working-class life in early twentieth-century New York. This subject matter is not, however, representative of the entire spectrum of Ashcan art. Featuring some of the Ashcan school's most vibrant and outstanding works, this book demonstrates unequivocally the zeal with which these artists and their circle embraced the world of play enjoyed by all levels of society. Spirited scenes of diverse leisure activities in cafés, bars and parks, at the theatre, on the beach, at sporting events and in the countryside provide a refreshing look at this important artistic movement.

Offers a fresh exploration of a major American artistic movement
Features works by the Ashcan artists and their circle, including George Bellows (see opposite), William Glackens, Robert Henri, Edward Hopper, Rockwell Kent, George Luks, Guy Pène du Bois, Maurice Prendergast, Everett Shinn and John Sloan, among others
Complemented by lively essays on the world of leisure experienced and depicted by the Ashcan school.

Relatively few primers offer in-depth details on the Ashcan artists: a school of early 20th-century American artists whose work centered around New York City life. Here the underworld of the City was often displayed - and LIFE'S PLEASURES is the first book to explore the lighter side of the Ashcan artists' works, featuring leisure scenes in cafes, bars and parks and movies. You'll recognize the artists' names ' Edward Hopper, Rockwell Kent, John Sloan - and the essays offer further insights on New York culture and artistic sentiment, making LIFE'S PLEASURES a top pick for both New York and college-level art libraries.

      Book Description

American political culture and military necessity were at odds during the War for American Independence, as demonstrated in this interpretation of Continental army administration. E. Wayne Carp shows that at every level of authority—congressional, state, and county—a localistic world-view, a deferential political order, and adherence to republican ideology impeded the task of supplying the army, even though independence demanded military strength.

Placing military history within the context of colonial and revolutionary historiography, Carp finds that the colonial American belief that authority and political power should be decentralized deeply influenced Congress's approach to the task of supplying the army. Furthermore, most Congressmen had neither military experience nor any idea of how to administer an army, while local governments constantly thwarted the army's efforts to obtain supplies—they blocked impressment and interfered with the movement of food and clothing.

Carp shows that political leaders eventually adjusted their ideals to the imperatives of winning the war. He offers a revisionist analysis of the origins of the Nationalist movement of 1780-83 that was begun by army officers and state legislators fearing the imminent failure of the Revolution. Lacking unity and blinded by republican ideology, the Nationalists did not markedly improve the administration of the army. Instead, it was largely through the efforts of Superintendent of Finance Robert Morris, the cooperation of the French, and sheer luck that the British were ultimately defeated. Carp concludes that the Americans won the Revolution "in spite of, rather than because of, their political beliefs."

4 out of 5 stars Not for the Casual Reader.......2004-01-28

When deciding whether or not to read this book the reader must pay particular attention to the subtitle of the work: "Continental Army Administration and American Political Culture; 1775-1783." Mr. Carp takes the "starving" for granted; assuming the reader is aware of the bad winter encampments at Valley Forge and Morristown, for example, and instead probes the reasons why the Continental Army was always hungry. In a nutshell; the Continental Army eventually prevailed in the war in spite of the ideals of the revolutionaries, rather than because of them. The author catalogs the various shortcomings of the Confederation period, and demonstrates how these shortcomings generally derived from the impetus for independence itself. For instance, the general mistrust of remote authority (embodied in the Crown and Parliament) and resulting localism prevalent among colonists, translated into caution and sometimes outright hostility in the relationship between the states and Congress. Congress too, unable to rid itself of the fetters of ideology, chose to attribute failure in the commissary department to graft and corruption among staff officers, rather than to a flawed system in which it periodically meddled; intent upon improvement but generally resulting for the worse. Everything came to a boil in the catastrophic year of 1780, and from out of the cauldron of defeat and financial collapse arose, not surprisingly from current and former army officers who had borne the brunt of a system designed to be ineffectual, the Federalist movement.

The book does what it sets out to do and is something of a tour de force. It is scholarly, well footnoted and methodical.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The first issue in a solid comic book adaptation of the first Anita Blake novel.......2007-05-01

Laurell K. Hamilton might be unwilling to go back to the glory days of Anita Blake, but fans can re-experience how great things were at the beginning with the first issue in the Dabel Brothers' 12-part adaptation of the first novel, "Guilty Pleasures," for Marvel, which is being scripted by Stacie M. Ritchie with artwork by Brett Booth. Our penguin-loving heroine has already made her reputation as "The Executioner," sanctioned by the government to kill vampires in a world where vampires are were-creatures are now legal U.S. citizens with constitutional rights and social security numbers that will apparently never be recycled. Anita's day job is as an animator for Animator, Inc., raising the dead for profits more than fun in the great St. Louis area. She also works with the local Preternatural Squad (a.k.a. the Spook Squad) as an expert on vampires and other supernatural beings.

"Guilty Pleasures" begins with Anita being approached to investigate some murders. Four vampires have been slaughtered in the new vampire club district (vampires are very entrepreneurial) and in a way she is already working on the case since she is giving the police al the help she can. But Anita does not work for vampires. Then Anita goes to a surprise bachelorette party for her friend Catharine Maison at Guilty Pleasures, a vampire strip club, run by the master vampire Jean-Claude. Suffice it to say that things do not go well in this opening chapter. What you have here is most exposition, but which might be problematic since you would expect that the vast majority of readers who pick up this comic book are going to be die-hard fans of the series. But neophytes will be able to get up to speed and the rest of us can revel in taking an illustrated walk down memory lane to the first time we read one of these books and became hooked. No matter how much disdain we might have for the current course of the series as it wallows more in soft-core sex than hard-core horror, our affection for those first Anita Black novels has not dimmed.

Ritchie does an excellent job of sticking not just to Hamilton's plot, but her dialogue as well. In an interview Ritchie reported that: "Ms. Hamilton has all final say on character designs, art, and the scripts. She is very active in making sure that her universe is conveyed correctly." Booth, best known for his work on "Backlash" at the Wildstorm Studios, has a style that is well suited to the world of Anita Black, although he has to make some alterations in Anita Blake's hairstyle to desl with all those curls (one of which will apparently alwys curl down on her forehead between her eyes). Fortunately Anita's skin does not stay as white as it is early on in this first issue, and if you see some of the covers of other issues know that the vampires do not have the alabaster white skin you see with Jean-Claude on the cover of #2.

The contract between Dabel Brothers and Hamilton is for the first five Anita Blake books, so after "Guilty Pleasures" we can look forward to "The Laughing Corpse)," "Circus of the Damned," "The Lunatic Cafe," and "Bloody Bones." Of course we will have to wait to see if Booth hangs around to do the artwork as long as Ritchie writes the adaptations. Hamilton apparently cleared Ritchie for the project, so my assumption would be she will script all five, but what do I know? At this point I just want Ritchie and Booth to stick around for the second novel, "The Laughing Corpse," because the end game of that one is my favorite of the Anita Blake novels and I want to see how Booth illustrates the scene that I always thought would make a movie version end up with an X-rating for violence and not sex.

Shown above is the wrap around cover of Anita in a graveyard with a whole lotta zombies coming out of the ground of the front, underscoring that she might be called a Vampire Hunter but in these books she makes her living as an animator, with the back adding a passel of were-animals to the proceedings. The second printing offers a variant cover depicting Anita by herself, dressed in black including a t-shirt that proclaims "Zombies are cool" around the figure of a zombie penguin (a version of the original cover serves as the back cover). The variant cover for the third printing is one of the dancers at Guilty Pleausres with long blonde hair, but there is also a Greg Horn 1/10 variant cover of Anita with gun drawn and a Booth sketch of Anita for a special New York Comics Convention version cover. I actually like the second printing cover a bit more because it fits it better with the other covers, at least for the six issues that have been printed to date, because with one exception they have all been similar in featuring one character (the cover of #2 is the poster of Jean-Claude that is available).

Anita Blake has faced great horrors in her career as a vampire hunter and an animator of the undead, but being left in a dungeon with an army of were-rats is hardly her idea of a good time. Fortunately, she is able to escape when her vampire hosts intercede, but her good luck seems short-lived when she is brought before Nikolaos, the master vampire of St. Louis. What Nikolaos wants is unclear, but one thing is certain - even an experienced vampire hunter like Anita cannot stand against a being as powerful as this! But can she survive the night?

            Product Description

Anita Blake has become deeply involved in a murder mystery that threatens to shake the foundations of the vampire underworld of St. Louis, and she's not about to let the roadblocks she's encountered thus far stop her from solving the case. But she won't be able to do it alone - she's going to need the help of Phillip, a vampire junkie who can help her gain access to people and places she'd never be able to enter on her own. including a special vampire party where hunters like herself are definitely not welcome.
