Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

The King's Body offers a unique and up-to-date overview of a central theme in European history: the nature and meaning of the sacred rituals of kingship. Informed by the work of recent cultural anthropologists, Sergio Bertelli explores the cult of kingship, which pervaded the lives of hundreds of thousands of subjects, poor and rich, noble and cleric. His analysis takes in a wide spectrum, from the Vandal kings of Spain and the long-haired kings of France, to the beheaded kings of England and France, Charles I and Louis XVI.

Bertelli explores the multiple meanings of the rites related to the king's body, from his birth (with the exhibition of his masculinity) to the crowning (a rebirth) to his death (a triumph and an apotheosis). We see how particular occasions such as entrances, processions, and banquets make sense only as they related directly to the king's body. Bertelli also singles out crowd-participatory aspects of sacred kingship, including the rites of violence connected with the interregnum (perceived as a suspension of the law) and the rites of expulsion for a tyrant's body, emphasizing the inversion of crowning rituals.

First published in Italy in 1990, The King's Body has been revised and updated for English-speaking readers and expertly translated from the Italian by R. Burr Litchfield. Deftly argued and amply illustrated, this book is a perfect introduction to the cult of kingship in the West; at the same time, it illuminates for modern readers how strangely different the medieval and early modern world was from our own.

Ably translated from the original Italian by R. Burr Litchfield (Professor of History, Brown University), The King's Body: Sacred Rituals Of Power In Medieval And Early Modern Europe by Sergio Bertelli (Professor of History, University of Florence) presents an amazing and scholarly focus on a critical piece of European history: the nature and meaning of the sacred rituals associated with kingship. From the Vandal kings of Spain to the long succession of kings in England and France, The King's Body explores the multiple significance of rituals from birth to crowning and death. Very highly recommended for anyone with a keen interest in the history of the European monarchies, the black-and-white illustrations of classical artwork enhance this scholarly and serious historical analysis.

Book Description

This new and expanded edition of the first comprehensive study of rituals in early modern Europe examines the impact on the European interpretation of ritual from the discoveries of new civilizations in the Americas and missionary efforts in China. It also adds more material about rituals peculiar to women. Edward Muir draws on extensive historical research to emphasize the persistence of traditional Christian ritual practices, even as enlightened elites attempted to choose reason over passion, textual interpretation over ritual action, and moral rectitude over gaining access to supernatural powers of anti-Christian rituals. 5 out of 5 stars Great Inquiry into European Ritual in the Early Modern Era.......2005-09-20

Muir's "Ritual in Early Modern Europe" approaches the idea of ritual, its impact on society and its pervasiveness. All rituals contain an element of change and rituals occur every day in our lives and all contain the consistence of the prelimenal the limenal and the postlimenal steps to the change. And while the author divides the rituals to those of the lower and upper body they all follow the same basic structure. The books provides very interesting accounts of Charaviri which is "rough music" - but really a ritualized form of primitive justice where the perpetrator of an act is embarrassed into proper behavior. Further the book describes the ritual calendar and the assault the reformation attempted on it. Most of these rituals are religious fast and feast days. Obviously ritual won the battle though often the names and figures are changed but the underlying ritual remains constant. Another amazing account of ritual described in this book is that of the Sacre where the king of France is both coronated and deified. This is really interesting stuff and though bordering the high academic is a very enjoyable read that is engaging and well written enough to not be dull in the least bit.

The book is very useful to the historian but would be interesting even if history is not your main source for reading enjoyment. This book should be definitely read with some background on Early Modern Europe (even a 101 course on European History might be sufficient) I would suggest that this is a book to be read before attempting any in depth study of the reformation the middle ages or even Rome. The concepts developed here will be of great benefit to anyone trying to understand the mindset often the specific nature of rituals in these times and really lends a hand to the developing professional historian who wishes to connect ideas and further develop deeper historical inquiries. This book is packed with well documented data for a book that covers such a long period. Further this book contains a great bibliography and is sure to inspire further inquiry into the nature of ritual. I highly recommend this to all students of history but further believe that anyone with an ounce of curiosity will enjoy this book.

3 out of 5 stars Textbook on Ritual with Good Bibliography.......2000-04-04

Muir, an expert on civic ritual in Venice in the Renaissance, has brought his knowledge of ritual in early modern Europe to this textbook in succient and compacted prose. Muir shows how in the early modern period time, the body, religion all underwent conceptual transformations. He draws on antropological studies, as well as other sociological methodologies in dealing with rites of passage, carnivalesque activity, the Protestant and Catholic Reformations, and with the relation of Jews to the larger christian world. As he is an expert on Venice, his writing on the rituals of the northern Italian cities tends to be more animated and eruidte and the sections of northern European cities. The end of each chapter has a bibliography with books highly recommended for further reading starred. It is a textbook, and best suited for undergraduates or advanced level high-school seniors. The independent reader may want to stick with a less packaged history.

    Book Description

Between the twelfth and the eighteenth centuries Italians frequently joined "confraternities" that made them symbolic brothers and sisters to one another. These kin groups launched extensive charitable programs, directed civic and religious rituals, and socialized members in class and gender roles. These essays examine how medieval religious and political values shaped early ritual kinship, how sixteenth-century social change and religious reform transformed confraternities, and how these altered groups became key agents in achieving the more rigid social order of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

In this novel interpretation of the initiation rite of Jewish boys beginning their religious schooling, Ivan G. Marcus presents a new anthropological historical approach to Jewish culture and acculturation in medieval Christian Europe. Marcus shows how Jews polemically transformed Christian religious symbols into Jewish counterimages to affirm the truth of Judaism and make sense of living in an intensely Christian culture.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, well researched, thought-provoking.......2006-11-27

If you are very interested in the history of medieval European Judaism then this book is wonderful. Marcus departs from the usual methods of analysis (legal, textual, etc.) and looks instead to the meaning of ritual, in this case, rituals of childhood such as when boys began school. By carefully analyzing the various components of this ritual in medieval Ashkenaz, Marcus concludes that the ritual was in large part an innovative response to Christian conceptions of childhood. He also concludes that the dissappearance of the ritual and its replacement by the still prevalent Bar Mitzvah ceremony was a response to, again, changing conceptions of childhood in the wider Christian world. On the whole, Marcus takes us into easily-overlooked aspects of the lives of medieval European Jews; perhaps so easily overlooked because they were so ordinary (and therefore so important.) Reading this book will give you deeper insight into a host of mentalities that medieval European Jews carried vis-a-vis the wider Christian world, the meaning of childhood, the purpose of ritual, and more.

My warning is that the book is written for an academic audience, and is therefore not light reading, although I have seen much worse writing from academics. Secondly, the subject is a narrow one, so unless you are really engrossed by the topic of medieval European Jewry or the historical analysis of ritual in general, you might find this book less than interesting. (That is why I gave it four stars.)

"This fascinating story of how young Jewish boys were introduced to formal Torah study in the Middle Ages presents a new perspective on many questions of medieval history. It will be of interest to scholars in Jewish studies, cultural studies, and anthropology."--William Chester Jordan, Princeton University

"Marcus brings anthropology to one of the heartlands of Jewish history: medieval Ashkenaz. The results are fascinating and full of implications for other realms of Jewish studies."--Harvey Goldberg, Hebrew University, Jerusalem

"Ivan Marcus' book is a brilliant, refreshing, and pathbreaking exercise in the application of cultural anthropology to medieval Jewish history. Discussing in detail one single rite de passage, Marcus presents the culture of medieval Jews as centered in their identity while at the same time open to reinterpreting themselves in light of the Christian surrounding culture. An outstanding new approach to Jewish history in Christian Europe, it will undoubtedly shape many future discussions on the most appropriate historical method for Jewish history."--Robert Bonfil, Hebrew University, Jerusalem

"In this short but exciting book, Professor Marcus examines one medieval Jewish rite of passage in depth--the ceremony marking the initiation of young boys into the cheder on Shavout--and, by utilising a cultural-anthropological approach, suggests a novel interpretation of Jewish identity during the Middle Ages. . . . This is a well-researched enterprise and is the product of many years of careful reflection by a master of his craft. . . . A book that should be read and enjoyed."--John Cooper, Jewish Chronicle

"[A] challenging book which offers an anthropological insight into cultural structures and core values that developed among medieval Ashkenzai Jewry. . . . The use of narrative, legal, poetic and ethnographic sources, and Hebrew and Latin manuscript illuminations contributes to a comprehensive and elaborated description of the ritual."--Sophia Menache, Patterns of Prejudice

"As a piece of scholarship . . . Rituals of Childhood is impeccable. . . . As a piece of anthropological reconstruction it makes for compelling reading."--Haim Chertok, Jerusalem Post Literary Supplement

"An important work, both instructive and entertaining. Marcus presents new information and ideas that can be enjoyed by the general reading public as well as scholars in the field of Judaica. . . . This work is well written, thoughtful, and fascinating."--James Seaver, History: Reviews of New Books

"What Marcus has done in this book is articulate the symbolic language that underlies these rituals and makes of them a coherent faith-statement. We need more such anthropological studies that will cross cultural lines and teach us how to read the language in which rituals are meant to speak. This is a helpful model of the kind of research that we hope other scholars will emulate."--Rabbi Jack Riemer, South Florida Jewish Journal

"Marcus . . . unravels the Jewish and Greco-Roman elements; compares contemporary Christian rites and images; and draws on narrative, legal, poetic, ethnographic, and pictorial resources as well as first-hand accounts."--Reference & Research Book News

"What the author has done in this book is articulate the symbolic language that underlies these rituals and makes of them a coherent faith-statement."--Rabbi Jack Riemer, Jewish Bookworld

"For too long West European Jewish history has been conceived in isolation from the larger society. With this boo, we return to the end of the nineteenth century when historians like Moritz Güdemann, sensitive to the process of Jewish acculturation, would not have started their histories without first taking into account what was happening in the surrounding Christian society."--Joseph Shatzmiller, History of Education Quarterly

"Marcus' book is an extremely important landmark in the scholarly study of Jewish-Ashkenazic folklore . . . and presents an unexpected breakthrough in hitherto untravelled directions. For this reason, as well as for the book's aesthetic and literary merits--the beautiful, lucid, and orderly constructed presentation--I shall not be exaggerating if I call it an exemplary, classic work, which will surely encourage further research in the field."--Israel Ta-Shma, Jewish Quarterly Review

"The author brings a rich mixture of the talents of scholar, detective, and anthropologist to his work, which is part of a growing field of worldwide interdisciplinary endeavour, viewing Judaism not only as the sacred, textual property of a highly literate rabbinical elite but also as a civilization, a way of life or a religious culture."--Tony Woolfson, Jewish Quarterly

"Marcus is breaking new ground in this study which attempts to elucidate the reasons, using anthropological and historical tools, for the appearance and disappearance in Ashkenaz of an initiation ritual for young children into the world of Torah study."--Harvey Hames, Journal of Jewish Studies

"The book is magnificent, richly detailed, and well argued throughout. .. . Highly recommended for all medieval historians as well as anyone interested in the processes of cultural interaction."--Daniel Boyarin, American Historical Review

"Students of medieval history, Jewish history, and cultural studies will profit from Marcus's accomplishment."--Stephen D. Benin, Religious Studies Review

Dr. Marcus should stick to what he does best, lecturing. This book tries to draw connections that are rarely justified, points that he may be successful in conveying to an audience in a lecture setting, but ones that seem totally off-the-wall in a book as brief as this one. Nevertheless, certain points do seem valid and interesting.

      Book Description

This book is the first to examine closely the interaction between Jewish culture, medicine, and science from the late sixteenth to the late eighteenth centuries, Europe`s age of "scientific revolution." Ruderman argues that during this era Jewish culture and society became increasingly aware of medical and scientific advances, and that a new Jewish scientific discourse evolved that had significant repercussions for Jewish religious concerns.

        Book Description

This book presents a social and cultural history of "dishonorable people" (unehrliche Leute), an outcast group in early modern Germany. Executioners, skinners, grave-diggers, shepherds, barber-surgeons, millers, linen-weavers, sow-gelders, latrine-cleaners, and bailiffs were among the "dishonorable" by virtue of their trades. It shows the extent to which dishonor determined the life chances and self-identity of these people. Taking Augsburg as a prime example, it investigates how honorable estates interacted with dishonorable people, and shows how the pollution anxieties of early modern Germans structured social and political relations within honorable society.

This book presents a social and cultural history of 'dishonourable people' (unehrliche Leute), an outcast group in early modern Germany. Executioners, skinners, grave-diggers, shepherds, barber-surgeons, millers, linen-weavers, sow-gelders, latrine-cleaners, and bailiffs were among the 'dishonourable' by virtue of their trades. This dishonour was either hereditary, often through several generations, or it arose from ritual pollution whereby honourable citizens could become dishonourable by coming into casual contact with members of the outcast group. The dishonourable milieu of the city of Augsburg from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century is reconstructed, to show the extent to which dishonour determined the life-chances and self-identity of dishonourable people. The book then investigates how honourable estates interacted with dishonourable people, and how the pollution anxieties of early modern Germans structured social and political relations within honourable society.

            Book Description

This book reveals the social logic of the medieval rituals of reconciliation as showcased by the most potent rite, the kiss of peace. Ritual is presented as a contested ground on which individuals, groups, and political and moral authorities competed for and appropriated political sovereignty. The thesis of the study is that by employing ritual and bodily mnemonics as strategic tools, the forces of order and official morality strove to organize personality structures around a hegemonic value system. Researching three analytical fields—the legal bonds of peace, the emotional economy of ritual, and the building of identity—the book highlights the contents and evolution of ritual reconciliation in diverse cultural contexts in the period between the eleventh and the sixteenth centuries.
