Fans of Jill Conner Browne's hilarious advice and queenly assurance should mix up a margarita and prepare to enjoy themselves with her book God Save the Sweet Potato Queens. Whether you're still a Cute Girl or have made it to the glorified ranks of Fabulous Woman, the allure of big hair, utter confidence, and a sparkly tiara is easily understandable. Forget "less is more"--as Jill and all the Tammys can tell you, "more is more, and also better." As a follow-up to The Sweet Potato Queens' Book of Love, this gem touches on many of the same topics--marriage, motherhood, fiancés, the Promise, and all-important attitude and style. Added are a ton of side-splitting stories from fans around the country, who are apparently busy starting up their own royal families with names like the "Menopause Mafia" and "Brazen Strumpets"; one startling tale of a mom at the end of her rope who bursts into "Jeremiah was a bullfrog" in public as a last-ditch effort to get her kids to behave wins Conner Browne's award for mother of the year. The chapter titled "How to Be a Girl" is one of the greatest instruction manuals ever for turning men into putty--the big secret, it seems, is a large bow in your hair. Who knew? One big surprise at the end of this book is hiding under the title "Matters of the Heart." Here you'll read a touching homage to a much-beloved friend of the author, and it will have you running for the nearest hanky. If you find yourself in need of a little pick-me-up after this sad tale, turn to the recipe section, where Twinkie Pie, Dinksey's Gooey Bars, and Death Chicken are guaranteed to cheer you right up. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
Hallelujah! The Sweet Potato Queens are back!
In 1999, Jill Conner Browne, royal boss of Jackson, Mississippi's own glorious Sweet Potato Queens, introduced them to the world in the hilarious bestseller
The Sweet Potato Queen's Book of Love (which contained everything you ever need to know about Love, Life, Men, Marriage, and the importance of Being Prepared). But, fortunately for us, that was not the final chapter in the Queens' splendid saga. Dating for the Advanced, or Advancing
The Joys of Marriage -- if you must
More Delicious, Death-Defying Recipes
The Promise for Men -- six little words that will make any woman Lolling About -- the official activity of the Sweet Potato Queens
And, of course,
The All-True Story of the Two Most Wonderful Men in the World
Not to mention:
Reader Mail -- honoring the adventures of brand-new Wannabes and Honorary Queens from around the world
If you haven't met the Sweet Potato Queens yet, this is the introduction you've been waiting for. If you already know the joys of Queendom, this is your official welcome-back party.

Love love LOVE the Queens.......2007-06-04
Short and sweet review: Love the book! It is hysterical. You know these Southern women are doing some living! If you understand life in the south at all, you must read this (and the others) book.
Capuchin.......2007-05-02
This book changed my life. I picked it up in an airport as I was leaving the country to work on my dissertation fieldwork. I couldn't put it down. Jill has such a wonderful sense of humor and outlook on life, I laughed out loud while reading it.
I embraced Queendom and, more importantly, my friends. I got myself a tiara; there's just no way to stay frustrated, angry or depressed when you're wearing a tiara.
More Queens.......2007-02-16
I found this one to be a little slow to get started, compared to the Sweet Potato Queens Book of Love, but it definitely got there! Lots of fun, a GREAT way to get past a tough day at the office or a day where things just don't seem to go right - just relax with this book and be prepared to enjoy yourself!
outrageous!.......2007-01-03
This was my introduction to the Sweet Potato Queens. I found them at the library and enjoyed them so much that I gave a copies to every outrageous woman I know. We all love them! You may not agree with everything Jill Connor Browne says, but you have to love the way she says it. Not having read the "Book of Love," didn't spoil this one for me. It encouraged me to find her other books and laugh till I cried. I gave a copy to a friend of mine to listen to while she was driving, and she nearly drove off the road, she was laughing so hard!
Absolutely funny.......2006-02-06
This book is just funny. I have laughed so hard I was crying. It is hard to read a book when tears are streaming out of your eyes. wonderful.
It is hard to describe what this book is about. I think I can say itis about living large and living well with what you have and being all you can be.
Enjoy. Worth EVery Penny.

Couldn't stop laughing!.......2004-09-22
Jill Conner Browne has got to be the smartest, funniest, most charming woman on the planet. I've bought all of her books at least twice and can't keep any of them. Everytime I loan one to one of my friends they end up keeping it. Not only will you laugh yourself sick reading any of her wonderful books, they're full of good, sensible advice. Take a look at her financial planner's rule #1 Hope Daddy lives forever. That's good advice if ever there was some. Check out the chapter in The Book of Love entitled, "Men who just need killing." Also good advice.
So here's my advice, buy the book. Buy all the books. Buy several because you won't be able to keep them either. I'm thinking of handing them out as Christmas presents. Oh, yeah, and if Jill ever runs for President every woman I know will vote for her!

Customer Reviews:
A wonderful work despite its flaws.......2007-08-09
I am generally a huge fan of Mike Carey and John Bolton individually - so a collaberation between them is always a treat. Though cunningly told and lushly rendered, it is a bit difficult to follow at points. The story has a few jagged edges that may be hard to assimilate into the story on your first go, and some of the panels tend to get a bit blurry, making it difficult to be sure of what exactly is happening.
Bottom Line: this work gets 4 stars despite it's flaws because it has a lot of re-readable value.
Complete Masterpiece.......2007-07-03
As a long time reader of Books of Magic I must admit that this surpassed my expectations by far! A must.
Dark and twisted.......2007-05-18
This is an interesting book that goes in many directions at once. The subject matter is grim, the protagonist has lost her father and is adopted by a group of junkies who use her blood to shoot up. She is drawn into a violent struggle between two queens of the Faerie kingdom at a tremendous personal cost. Moments of levity are interspersed, to varying degrees of success, between action sequences and introspection. Similarly, the art veers from the grotesque to the sublime, following the tone of the narrative. Unfortunately, the story often moves too fast and becomes forced. Overall, while it certainly isn't for everyone due to the subject matter but fans of the authors should give it a read.

Imagine Remains of the Day rewritten by an Agatha Christie with a nasty sense of humor, and you'll get some idea of why Dorothy Cannell's new mystery is such great fun. When Sir Henry Gossinger announces that he intends to leave his stately home to the man who has been his butler for 50 years, all sorts of upper-class stuff begins to hit a variety of fans. The elderly butler is drowned in a toilet, his sharp-witted granddaughter is exiled to London, and greed is only one of the seven deadly sins that go for a romp over the glorious grounds. Cannell displays a similar combination of talents in Femmes Fatal and especially How to Murder the Man of Your Dreams, both available in paperback.
Book Description
At gloomy Gossinger Hall, where the chill of centuries calls for three sweaters, Sir Henry Gossinger has just dropped a bombshell. After hours of unexplained penance on his knees in the chapel, he has announced to his unwitting relatives that he has announced to his unwitting relatives that he has written a new will...bequeathing everything to his devoted butler, Hutchins. Not since the days of George III, when roguish Sir Rowland Gossinger was accused of stealing the queen's silver tea strainer, has such a scandal threatened the family honor. But worse is yet to come.
For Hutchins is missing, and it soon becomes apparent that the only thing the distinguished butler will inherit is a place in the cemetery. Found head down in the principle fixture of the twelfth-century privy, he may have been the victim of foul play. And what could Hutchins have meant by his dying words, "God save the Queen"?
To Flora, the deceased's sweet young granddaughter, Hutchins' death is a tragic loss. Raised by him in Gossinger Hall, she remembers her grandfather's dedication to the noble Gossingers--including Sir Henry's social climbing wife--and all the stately legends he told her over the silver polish. Only a new life in London, and the kindness of Vivian Gossinger, nephew and former heir to Sir Henry, can ease her pain.
Yet soon Gossinger Hall's history of treachery and intrigue--topped by the ongoing rift with the Royal Family regarding the long-lost tea strainer--casts its shadow over Flora. And suddenly she finds herself caught in a murderously tangled web, where even a familiar face could hide the heart of a cold-blooded killer.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing but not without its good points.......2000-08-15
I liked Flora and Vivian even though they were rather colorless and drab compared to Ellie Haskell's world. But I was just so shocked by the story's mostly negative difference, that I don't think much of this book. I KNOW the author can do better than this. Don't I have the Ellie Haskell mysteries as proof? But this wasn't too bad and being shorter it was easier and quicker to get through than that other, Down The Garden Path. However the mystery was an utter flop. I'd guessed who the murderer was almost as soon as we learned of the butler's death, and though I did falter briefly in my conviction due to suspicious behaviour on an innocent's part, I knew it all. Which is downright spooky and says little for the story's merit, since I'm the kind of person that doesn't think and reason when she reads a mystery but shuts her brain up and lets the main character do all the figuring out! But no, it wasn't terrible...not really, though still very disappointing...and nothing like Ms. Cannells' other books.
Author had good intentions, but story disappointing........1998-07-07
I think what went wrong is that I had a lot of expectations to this novel and I thought I was about to read an "Ellie Haskall-like" storyline complete with that wonderful british wit and humor that this author so wonderfully puts to paper.
However, I could not get very involved with the storyline and I ended up "Plowing" through the book just to get it done. My only interest turned out to be the Silver Spoon that was missing for 200 years and I was looking forward to its recovery and reasons for disapearance than any of the murders. I didn't even notice that anyone had died. I appears that Ms. Cannell either wrote this as a first novel or she must have been in a horrible state of some kind when she did write it. I'm happy to see an addition to the Haskell series in "The Spring Cleaning Murders" and can't wait to read it. God Save Dorothy Cannell!!
This was not a pleasant read and it would have been better in the Cannel sytle of First Person writing.
Not as thrilled as with the Ellie Haskell stories!!.......1998-05-19
To tell the truth, I was disappointed in this book. I thought the story line was great, but the developement of the story wasn't as good as it could have been. I look forward to reading Dorothy's books! But this one didn't meet my expectations.
Wonderful characters.......1998-04-21
Cannell has created some incredibly likeable characters in God Save the Queen. I can't wait to read more about Flora and Vivian.
Great Book, Great New Characters.......1998-04-10
I thoroughly enjoyed God Save the Queen. I have read and enjoyed Dorothy Cannell for years and was very leary of her writing books that were not about Ellie and Bentley T Haskell. Dorothy didn't disapoint!! Flora and the other new characters are every bit as charming and fun as the old.
Dorothy stayed true to her writing style and demonstrates her great and unique sense of humor.
This book is fast reading and fun!
I can't wait for the next one to come out.

Book Description
The British monarchy is the subject of intense curiosity throughout the world. But this book reveals that those longing for the Republic of Britain include the heir to the throne, Prince William, and his brother Harry.
Customer Reviews:
Editorial.......2007-08-05
This book is very well written. It is like he is talking to me in person. He is, I feel, a little bit too harsh on the Queen but right on about Philip, Charles and the Queen Mother and Margaret. A good book.
Monarchy, yes; truth, no.......2005-06-28
I purchased this book in the hopes that I might learn more about some of the contemporary issues/public opinion surrounding the monarchy of the United Kingdom. I was horribly disappointed. Quotes taken out of context, unattributed quotes, and silly gossip form the basis for a nasty polemic. This is the kind of distortion one probably should expect from an acolyte for republicanism. It is not the kind of book, however, that anyone interested in serious discussion about the monarchy would want to waste his/her money on. It is so unbalanced a perspective, that even those few positive contributions the author feels forced to cite during his diatribe are attributed not to generosity of spirit but to psychological disorder. It is sad that this kind of royal character asassination does not still carry a penalty of some time in the Tower.
Brilliantly written, hilarious and informative........2005-03-18
Johann Hari is one of Britain's most distinguished journalists and has won loads of awards - all deserved! This book shows why he is so acclaimed. I loved its mix of gossip, political wisdom, and intellect. I cannot imagine anybody but the most crazy monarchist disliking it (and even they would have to admit there's some great anecdotes here...)
(by the way, the other commenters here on this book seem to be slightly insane. An EU coup in Britain? Uh... yeah...)
Republican cover for the creeping EU coup.......2005-02-19
Mr Hari is inded a 'non-journalist', as John Pilger describes him. He is arrogant, ignorant and pompous beyond his years. It's no surprise that the reactionary Trotskyite and Bush-loving fool Christopher Hitchens likes him. This damns them both! Hari hates the British royal family and wants to get rid of them in order to make it easier for Tony Blair to abolish Britain's sovereignty and make us a province of a new undemocratic state called Europe. This would open the door for Blair to become President not just of Britain but of Europe. A new Pope, indeed!
A masterpiece.......2004-04-25
I laughed so hard my gut ached when I read this book. It is a witty, extremely well-researched investigation into the monarchy, both intellectually stimuling and filled with gossip. The reviews were right. This is a must-read.

Book Description
Queen’s music is embedded in the popular consciousness — from sports stadiums and TV commercials to endless radio replay and Wayne’s World. For Daniel Nester, it is also an enduring personal obsession. God Save My Queen explores the parallel lives of author and band through riffs, trivia, lyrics, sexual awakenings, close readings of albums, and scholarly footnoted thoughts. It draws connections to everyone from Liza Minnelli to Leni Riefenstahl, including such moments as Michael Jackson and Freddie Mercury’s sharing a kiss in 1981. Part memoir, part prose poetry, part rock book, God Save My Queen occupies the singular place where a fan’s life and a fan’s fixation collide. This collection of lyrical, loopy riffs celebrating the rock band Queen includes a short take on every song recorded by the band.
Customer Reviews:
a kind of magic..........2005-10-14
This book is amazing. Any Queen fan who has felt at some point some surreal connection with the band will benefit greatly from reading this and its companion. It puts into words the abstract forms of things I'd never thought to try and describe. Parts of it brought tears to my eyes; parts of it made me laugh out loud. There are few things I can say that express what the book is, let alone its greatness. In any case, it is not a fan biography; it isn't a review; it is simply a genre in itself as something completely unique from anything else I've ever read. And it rocks.
He Will, He Will, Rock You!.......2004-05-08
I came of age (and to music) around the same time as the author. My band of choice was the Canadian art power trio RUSH. The band QUEEN was right up there, though, and I was as sad as any other fan to learn of the band's premature demise and lead singer Freddie Mercury's tragic death.
Daniel Nester writes clearly and well. He fuses a fan's energy with the full power and importance of QUEEN, both as a musical and pop culture phenomena. Each QUEEN song receives a careful treatment that combines the "everyfan" experience of the author with specific details of the song itself. This approach succeeds and has created a user's guide to QUEEN as well as a backstage pass to a collective generational memory. Read this book, and Dan Nester will indeed rock you!
I give it 4 stars.......2004-04-14
...because it's a strange book, and we don't have enough strange things these days. I like the footnotes, and the poems are strange, but I like them. I like Queen fine, and Nester brings back memories of listening to music passionately. There's a lot of "too much information" here, a lot of sex, but that may be a plus for some people!
A complete waste of time.......2004-04-01
Someone gave me this book--why, I'll never know. I liked Queen a lot once. Do the remaining members know a supremely bad poet has written a tedious book about them? Someone should let them know.
The writer seems to be one of those guys who obsessively remembers stuff about marginal subjects and likes to spout that info. But then he hit on the perfect career path--a poet! So now he can footnote bad poetry with obscure references and call it a book.
An edgy new art form.......2003-06-12
Daniel Nester is an obsessed fan. Nothing strange there - lots of music books are written by fans. The difference is that Nester - also a New York poet - takes his fandom seriously; he considers it a suitable topic for poetry. And why not? Post-baby-boomers tend to define themselves by their cultural affiliations - whether you like the Smiths or System of a Down, pop taste articulates your personality, your stance towards the world. Nester's prose poems - one for every Queen song - go well beyond the traditional tribute. They explore the odd, obsessive mindset of the fan, the curious distance and closeness he feels towards his chosen object. The poems are madly associative in the Beat tradition but also toy with a pedantic scholarly bent, particularly in the hilarious footnotes. This bold work deserves to be read and discussed.

This is a wide ranging and fascinating insight into British life fifty years ago.
Book Description
A lyrical combination of memoir, poetry, trivia, and rock history provide the follow-up to Daniel Nester's first book on the British band Queen. Nester blends personal anecdotes with Queen's music to form the liner notes to his own psychosexual awakening, including an exquisite tribute to the unforgettable Mercury, who died of AIDS in 1991. Short essays — or riffs — are devoted to each Queen track on their last five studio albums, as well as a few solo and live efforts. The book is seven inches square, the same size as a vinyl 45-rpm record.

Tony is there to direct a new musical stage production. Farrell accepts an internship in the most important kitchen in all of Great Britain. They live together in a superb flat complete with a stodgy, and very proper, British butler.

Farrell also finds a rather perplexing mystery to solve when he discovers that there is a young man in London that looks exactly like him.
