Art history for everyone.......2007-10-07
This is a valuable companion to the standard college text for the art history student. It is short yet complete, and makes art history entirely accessible. It is clearly written, entertaining, and is a great overview for the novice or serious student of art history.
Learn with your children.......2007-09-01
This book was purchased for my son for school, but I purchased two to refresh my memory. It is a wonderful book.
Art Education Student.......2007-08-16
I am preparing to take the Art education part of the GACE exam. Not only is ths book a must but all of my professors encourage us to study it. The color photos are perfect and you could not buy anything better.
Great summary.......2007-05-13
This book points out the specifics of different art movements in a brief and informative fashion. Don't expect in-depth analysis of specific works, but you will get a run-down of the important names and pieces from significant periods in Art History. This book helped me go from a 4 to a 5 in A.P. Art History practice tests. I highly recommend it for the price!
The Annotated Mona Lisa.......2007-05-07

3 Credits!.......2007-10-13
I'm a college student who takes CLEP tests to get general education requirements out of the way. REA makes good products; I passed with a 69. Definitely worth buying, but make sure you take advantage of other resources in addition to this book.
ALL YOU NEED TO PASS.......2007-07-28
This is all you need to pass this CLEP. I'm horrible with History and this is all I used to study. I read everything twice, took some notes, took the practice tests and read the explanations. I studied for 3 days (about 24 hours total) and did just fine on the test.
A Great Study Guide.......2007-07-03
Passed the test with less than a week of studying. The test was cake with the help of the Study guide, I did not use any other study material. I highly recommend it.
This is the study guide you need.......2007-04-18
I used just this book to prep for the exam, I read the material once, took the first practice test, then re-read the material and took the second and third tests. I then reviewed the answers and took the test. This was my first ever CLEP test. Be your own judge however when studying, if you are a good test taker then this book should do it all for you, if not then supplement with other material. The book does a great job of covering the material. I scored a 72 on the test. Hope that helps.
The only study guide you need to pass..........2007-01-29
I recently took the Clep for US History I after only studying for a few weeks with only this book, and received a passing score of 62. The book is well worth the purchase, saving time and money.
I recommend reading through all the chapters once, and then just focusing on the practice tests and answer explanations.

The "Langer Encyclopedia," as the professional academics call The Encyclopedia of World History originally edited by the late William L. Langer, is basically a history of everything--and an outstanding reference volume. Want to know why the English called their 10th-century king Ethelred "the Unready"? See page 181. Or what the Ottoman Empire's constitution of 1876 said? See page 531. Or when women in Honduras got the vote? See page 955. This sixth edition, completely updated and revised by a team of scholars led by George Mason University's Peter N. Stearns, packs all it can into a year-by-year and region-by-region chronicle of human life on planet Earth. The book is big, the type is small, and the maps and genealogical tables are excellent. Stearns has added more material on women, leisure activities, and demographics to this edition, and the sections on Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and Latin America are much different from the previous version. As if this weren't enough, the book comes with a CD-ROM featuring the complete text and fantastic search capabilities. The Encyclopedia of World History is highly recommended for serious history buffs. --John Miller
Book Description
For decades William L. Langer's best-selling ENCYCLOPEDIA OF WORLD HISTORY was the indispensable, authoritative guide to all of human history. Now, under the direction of a distinguished new editor, comes an updated and dramatically improved version for a new generation, the only encyclopedia of its kind with a bound-in, searchable compact disc of the complete text. The result is a wholly accessible, absorbing canvas of world history that no student, scholar, or amateur historian should be without. Renowned historian Peter N. Stearns and thirty prominent historians have combined their expertise over the past ten years to perfect this comprehensive chronology of more than 20,000 entries that span the millennia from prehistoric times to the year 2000. With a unique format that has won it generations of fans, the ENCYCLOPEDIA continues to feature chronological entries grouped by geographic region, allowing readers to get an in-depth view of distinct events along with a virtual time line of human history. But this new edition is much more than an expansion of a classic; it reflects important recent changes in historical trends and historical thinking. In addition to showcasing traditional facts of national leadership and state power, the Encyclopedia embraces social and cultural developments, non-European history, women's history, religion, health, economics, technology, and other vital but less often reported aspects of the human drama. Here is a chronicle not only of major political events but of ordinary people, covering shifts in the relationships between men and women, developments in leisure, and demographic currents. And for all periods there are summaries of global developments that cannot be captured in national or regional frameworks. As editor Stearns notes in his preface, "The world we know historically has greatly changed. The revisions that animate this edition celebrate this change, benefiting from the labors of countless venturesome scholars over the past several decades." A masterwork whose roots date back to the nineteenth century, this exciting volume belongs at the elbow of every history lover and of anyone who has ever been curious about our constantly changing, remarkably diverse human story.

First rate quick reference.......2005-11-09
Not for reading, but for looking up details while reading other materials or quick confirmation of background information that comes up in discussion or newspaper/magazine articles or even historical details encountered in literature. There is very little detail, but almost everything gets a mention and can be put in context of other world events. I am on my third edition and would not be without it on my reference shelf.
Great Teaching Resource.......2005-10-24
I teach a 100 level art history at a univeristy and this is an excellent resource to accompany my lectures. My only complaint is not with the book but with whoever shipped it. Apparently this newer edition comes with a CD-ROM BUT mine had already been ripped out when I received it. I don't normally care about that sort of thing but I did pay for it and would have liked to have had the option of looking at it. Seemed too much trouble to send it back, plus I needed to have the book.
Leave this one at the library........2005-09-22
This is a wonderful encyclopedia, but it's so packed with general information that I believe it would be best kept at the library for a quick reference to dates and events. Not for the in debt researcher.
Wonderfully detailed but not for kids.......2005-08-10
This book was incredibly detailed. If you want a year by year reference, this is for you. However, we needed a family general history encyclepedia and this wasn't that. Also, this was organized by the year and not by major events or people. This may be a plus for some but was not what we needed.
Massive source of history knowledge.......2005-07-04
The best part about this book is the CD that comes with it. Anytime I come across someone or something I don't know much about, I just type it in and get all related entries. Very quick and smooth - like wikipedia but much more thorough and reliable. There are reportedly some inaccuracies in the book, but with every page full of historical details, and there being 1000+ pages, there are probably a few mistakes, but I have not been let down so far in my use of it. Enjoy!

The classic.......2006-10-02
Wells's classic is still a useful book. It is most out of date on the early history and archeology, which has changed substantially in recent years. One only needs to look at the great volume by Jacquetta Hawkes and Sir Leonard Wooley, Prehistory and the Beginnings of Civilization, which covers the period from the end of the Calcolithic (about 40,000 years ago) down to the founding of the earliest towns (about 10,000 years ago), to see how much that has changed since their volume was published in the early 60s. But it shows Wells's range and depth of intellect, and it's interesting to note that Wells was considered the universal intellect of his day, and before people said "As smart as Einstein," they said, "As smart as H.G. Wells." The section on Alexander the Great I found one of the best. As a serious work of pedagogy intended for the intelligent layman, it presaged by decades later similar works. But although much of the history is still valid, today the book will be of most interest to Wells fans and scholars, though, rather than as an "Outline of History."
Good timeline; poor theory.......2005-10-21
For those interested in reading about the species' history, Wells' _Outline_ is a nice supplement to new, more scholarly history books that make closer studies of power distributions and events in certain places at certain times. His timeline of Western European History is generally accurate (though by no means comprehensive) and makes for enjoyable reading.
While a well-educated reader will overlook Wells' racism (he holds the absurd belief that a monolithic culture once ranged from Ireland to China and is destined to be recreated by the superior Germanic builders of Europe) and skim for facts, a younger or less-informed reader might find it difficult to recognize the author's regular slips into a defunct worldview.
Above all, this book will gratify those readers whose memories of papal, royal, and cultural (primarily Western European) successions need to be revamped.
Wonderful book!.......2005-08-04
The earliest chapters of this remarkable book deal with the actual history of the planet we call Earth and the rudiments and development of early life. Afterward the book tells a fairly succinct story of the Dawn of Time and the lifestyles and development of early hominids leading up to and including Man. Once Wells reaches periods of written history, the story bogs down while he attempts to cover the rise of early cities, political and economic development, and early empires, which he does fairly ably though switching back and forth between the histories of individual continents is somewhat tedious. Wells speaks of the development of early religion and early communities in a very cogent, convincing and interesting way, but the disjointed concurrent treatment of ongoing empires (China, India, Rome, Egypt, Greece, etc) tends to choke and even halt the fluid style as we try to catch up on coexisting cultures around the globe. South America, Antarctica, and Australia are almost nonexistent in this book as Wells reconstructs the history of Europe, Asia and to a lesser extent, Africa. Still a very enjoyable and highly informative book.
Preoccupation with Race Ruins an Otherwise Enjoyable Read.......2005-04-24
H.G. Wells is a fine writer and 'The Outline of History' is generally enjoyable to read. However after a while one gets tired of his emphasis on race and the centrality of Aryans in history and his anti-semitism. Wells is an example of that mixture of socialism and racism that appeared at the beginning of the Twentieth Century. Other examples are Jack London and the young Adolph Hitler.
It is ironic that his general thesis that there is a progression in human history, though not a necessary or inevitable one, is a reasonable proposition and flatly contradicts his racist notions. Wells appears to be recounting from books recently read and frequently gets his facts just plain wrong. Most of his writing is conveying his personal and generally intelligent reflections on general stereotypes of various periods of history.
Were it not for its persistent emphasis on race, 'The Outline of History' would be a valuable and enjoyable book. I wish I could recommend it to the general reader, because there is a real need for a readable one volume survey of world history, but I cannot. Race has been shown over and over again to have little or no explanatory power. Wells' racist preoccupations will annoy informed readers and mislead uninformed ones.
A MAJOR PRE POST-WESTERN WORK.......2005-02-01
Today, when there is little but propaganda on TV and at the bookstore, it is astonishing to read a 20th century English-speaking author write in a way devoid of the propaganda. I doubt that the work could be published as is today were it new, even if by such a well-known author. Those were the days of free, or at least freeer press.
Because the time span is so great, more attention is paid to 19th Century history up to the end of WW I, where it stops than to older periods. But earlier periods are treated in ways according to the information available to the non-specialist. Wells' history is easier to read than that of the Durants and lacks their obvious bias. With the exception of Spengler, Wells' History is perhaps the last history or biography in which the European point of view is taken as matter-of-fact.

A helpful resource book to own.......2006-06-15
This book was very helpful when I needed to find information on a little know ministry that had some questionable teachings. It was the only book I could find out of many books I purchased on cults that had this group in it's content.
The material is nicely displayed, giving the background of the groups with a contrasting orthodox response. We especially appreciated the added appendix of Christian teachings, and creeds. In some categories the information was lacking, but over all the book serves as a very useful resource.
Research, research, research.......2006-03-13
I haven't read this book in its entirety but have noticed that it is quoted on a website about cults and used as an authority. On reading excerpts about Jehovah's Witnesses, I wonder if Dr. House didn't really do the research needed to form his opinions. The opinion that Jehovah's Witnesses are not allowed to read or study any bible but their own is not true. Having been around JWs my whole life, I know that many have several translations of the bible on their book shelves. Without having his book right in front of me, I can't pick it apart bit by bit, but this is a pretty basic mistake and makes me wonder if he's formed his opinions independently and through his own personal research and interviews with real members of these cults/sects or relied on others misinformation.
Not Worth the Money! Save yours or donate to charity........2005-12-20
Mr. Wayne House, ignorantly includes the United Pentecostal Church as a cult. Having a doctorate degree he is what the bible defines as 7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. 2 Tim 3:7 KJV
Worth the money for checking out nonorthodox groups.......2001-01-30
House goes over 19 different quasi-Christian religions and, although I have not read very much yet, initial appearances show that he appears to have done a very nice job. He lists the different viewpoints of these religions and then contrasts them with "Orthodox" Christianity. He uses original sources to support himself so that it's not just his opinion, but rather the opinion of the group's leaders. Certainly some may come in and disagree about certain nuances regarding the way he lays out the orthodox position (i.e. a Catholic or Greek Orthodox layperson may not see eye-to-eye on salvation and justification through faith alone), but House gives verses from the Bible to support himself. He also uses expert resources to check his work and make sure his arguments were not faulty. I will keep this reference near-by, and when I have a question about a particular group's teaching, I will be sure to see what this has to say.
I do have two complaints: First, the book is so big (350 pages, 8.5 x 11 format) and, with the pages getting flipped back and forth, I'm scared the spine may not hold out. I'm wondering why the publisher didn't use a metal ring spine to make it easier to lay the book flat and help it withstand the constant paging back and forth. Also, what about the Boston (discipleship) movement? I would have liked material on this growing group. However, I can't lessen my recommendation of the book despite my complaints.
A Great Ready Reference Book.......2000-06-25
H. Wayne House has put together a wonderful collection of charts/descriptions/facts regarding the various cults, sects, & religious movements. House gives facts about each group's history, their theology on the main doctrines of the Christian faith (i.e. the Trinity, the diety of Christ, the doctrine of Revelation, the humanity of Christ, Salvation, etc.) and he gives the orthodox response to the false teaching. This book is literally exhaustive in its research and simple in its approach, which makes the book a very powerful tool for the Christian apologists. Some of the various groups that are covered are Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Church Universal and Triumphant, A Course in Miracles, the New Age movement, Mind Science groups, Christian Identity Movement, Christadelphians, Eckankar, Urantia Foundation, The Way International, Rosicrucianism, Freemasonry, etc. The bibliography alone (from page 339 to 351) is worth the cost of the book.
Book Description
This succinct overview of the development of Western music can help students of all levels understand the evolution of musical styles. Although the text is only half the size of most music histories, it is enhanced by the many cross-references to the best anthologies and recordings for further information and examples.
Customer Reviews:
A great resource to own.......2007-08-27
This is a great source to have! It is easy to read and covers everything all the major music history text books cover. Overall it is a faster, eaiser, and more interesting read than other texts. World history is also linked with music history to help the reader understand what actually happened. I strongly suggest this book for Graduate students reviewing for comprehensive exams!
Valuable resource.......2000-09-13
Concise, but inclusive. Would make a valuable text for undergrad Music History or for general graduate study.

Only a little helpful.......2005-08-02
The only way this book helped was that it made me familiar with major things that happened within the specified timeframe. Other than that, I was lost on the CLEP.

Great Overview of World History for Beginners.......2002-02-09
Used as a textbook for general world civilization classes in college, this is a great beginner book. Very easy to understand and the selections are very interesting and relative to understanding basic world history. The authors are both very qualified historians and teachers (I have had them both in college and have greatly enjoyed them). Recommended for teachers and students of history.

A very good color paperback of a classic book.......2007-10-05
The Secret Teachings of All Ages is a must have book for anyone interested in esoteric knowledge. This is the best version of the book, short of obtaining one of the original 800 hard covers. It has all of the essential pictures and insets, many of which are absent in the reader's edition.
cheap and handy but not so very illustrated.......2007-07-12
a nice book containing alot info on many ancients topics. see index. Manly Hall has done a great job here. At some chapters it is nice to know some more of the current mytology on beforehand.
for a book this big it's good to have it in a handy paperback. The text is over 70 years and copyright is not renewed so this book is also freely available on the internet. I was hoping this printed book would be more illustrated than the online version. it does have some nice color illustration in the midle but througout the book it was not as illustrated as I expected.
A penultimate work in the history of the occult!.......2007-06-08
This is probably one of the most voluminous books I've ever read, but I won't complain. I really think that the author had a keen knowledge that seems to be missing among more "elusive" new-age types. I am almost finished reading it and I can say this book is quite interesting; the only chapters that didn't fascinate me had to do with science, but I'm really not one for science and never have been.
A Book to be Ensouled.......2007-05-19
I can add little to what the others that have reviewed this book have said other than to give it my highest personal endorsement. Mr. Hall was that rarest of true scholars- the Agrippa of our age.
There are those that will question why genuine "secret teachings" should be published for the general public. The author answers this near the end of the book in recounting the tale of Alexander's displeasure in hearing that his mentor Aristotle had published one of his most profound discourses for anyone to read. Aristotle's reply was that those who lacked spiritual comprehension would gain little from reading the book. That is also true in our time. Most people will not read this book, and those who do (if not ready) will dismiss it as nonsense. That certainly applied to me in my youth. It is a foolproof lock to wisdom- it will sound like foolishness to those who have not yet obtained to spiritual comprehension. You have to be capable of contemplating such teachings and then internalizing them (or "ensouling" them in the author's terminology.)
This book is truly a link of the Golden Chain. The author understood the importance of the Mysteries, of Pythagoras and Plato, of the perennial wisdom that flows through the ages. That is why this book will never be dated- such wisdom springs from the Source and can only be recollected. That Hall could have mastered so much in his 20's is remarkable. That he was sensitive to the growing danger of unbalanced soulless materialism so young makes him a true prophet. Given his times and backgoround I can only assume that this man was directly initiated by the Gods themselves.
This Tarcher/Penguin edition is truly a reader's edition. The type is actually readable as opposed to some of the reduced facsimile editions. It is unabridged and most of the important illustrations are included. The table of contents is very detailed and useful and there is a full index. Still, one day, I will own my own copy of the magnificent full-sized original for it is as much a work of art as it is a compendium of knowledge and wisdom.
Interesting Overview and Good Starting Point.......2007-04-12
This is a good overview of some of the various "secret" teachings throughout history. Rather than sate my curiosity, it made me more curious about these teachings and the unifying themes within. I think the book was a little too speculative at times and had a heavy leaning towards Masons and Rosicrucians. That said, I recommend it for anyone who wants to get a sense of the secret teachings that seem to be a part of all ages, both outside and hidden within the traditional religious teachings.
