The 25 Best Time Management Tools & Techniques.......2007-09-05
I have been taking time management courses for over 15 years, but i learned more in this time management tool than i ever learned in those courses. Each chapter is filled with tidbits of information that you can quickly put to use to become more effective in your career development. The chapters on vision and goals are excellent. I have benefited greatly from the tips, albeit small when you look at them in the book, will make a big difference once applied to your life. Love the book. Am passing it on to a coworker tomorrow.
Not the best.......2007-07-10
I didn't find this book as helpful as I had wished. The chapters only touch the tip of the iceberg and don't necessarily go into detail on how to implement the techniques.
The book could have been much more cohesive and comprehensive.
Great resource for the mildly disorganized.......2007-03-08
Pros: The book is laid out into 25 chapters, and each one is no more than 4-5 pages in length, making it easy to glance over the Table of Contents, and read quickly through whatever interests you most. Each lesson is 'en pointe', and doesn't waste time with casual talk and yet is engaging and written with utmost clarity. The book is fairly thin, and can fit in a large purse or briefcase. It can be read straight through (as I'm doing) or you can bounce around.
Cons: After ordering the book online, I got an email telling me that the book would be delayed by delivery for 4-6 weeks, instead of the 1-3 weeks I expected initially. Fortunally, it arrived in 3 weeks, since it came back into stock.
My Personal Thoughts: I like this book, because time management isn't exactly "pleasurable reading" for me. So, this is very quick & dirty. Instead of reading the whole book, I am tackling each chapter at a time, and within a month of owning the book, I'm halfway through re-organizing the clutter in my apartment, and have created a "tickler" file at work, which has already made my life less stressful, and easier to get to work, and quickly get started on projects. I could see myself referring back to this book in the future for tips. ..Conclusion: Definitely a keeper, but you must come with your own motivation, otherwise it'll just collect dust on your shelf.
A time saver.......2007-02-19
The "Cliff's notes" of Time Management.
I found the information was clear, concise and well presented. It's a good book to have on your desk as a reference when you feel yourself drifting into disorganization to motivate you to get back on track.
The only thing is I felt like it was snippets with no real cohesion. You could read it thinking...well I could do this, and that, or this and that... but there was no clear philosophy to bring it all together.
It's an excellent sampler of approaches, though...and as someone who has read many of the same books listed, I'd attest that the author's understanding and abbreviated versions of each of the time management techniques are spot-on.
20 Time Management Books in One.......2007-02-06
I liked this book so much that I just purchased 5 additional copies for family and friends. The authors present in one manageable volume lessons from the top 20 time management books on the amazon.com website. The book is divided into 6 sections and 25 short chapters covering diverse subjects such as identifying one's own values, writing a mission statement, organizing living and work spaces, overcoming procrastination and managing stress. In addition, there are helpful reviews of the 20 time management books the authors chose along with reviews of other helpful books such as Stephen Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, one of my personal favorites. This book is highly readable, practical and comprehensive. It is essentially a digest or executive summary of the best books on the subject. It is well organized and can be used as an easy continuing reference. I hope you get as much out of it as I did.
Book Description
Identifying and Leveraging the Hidden Social Networks That Drive Corporate Performance
In today's flatter organizations, collaboration in employee networks has become critical to innovation and to both individual and companywide performance. Executives spend millions on new organizational designs, cultural initiatives, and technologies to promote the sharing of knowledge and expertise across functional, hierarchical, and divisional lines. Yet these efforts have achieved disappointing results.
Rob Cross and Andrew Parker argue that's because most managers have little understanding of how their employees actually interact to get work done. In fact, formal "org charts" fail to reveal the often hidden social networks that truly drive--or hinder--an organization's performance. In this eye-opening book, Cross and Parker show managers how to find, assess, and support the networks most crucial to competitive success.
Based on their in-depth study of more than sixty informal networks within organizations around the world, Cross and Parker show how managers can implement a wide range of specific and inexpensive actions-from bridging strategically important disconnects in a network to eliminating information "bottlenecks" to recognizing key connectors-that will enhance the powerful impact networks can have on performance and innovation.

Social network theory gains real traction in this how-to guide........2007-02-16
In 1935 social network theory was created when an Italian born sociologist began drawing the now familiar network diagrams - laboriously constructed by hand but showing how employees related to each other within organizations. Today, softwares such as Ucinet are readily available and as a result social network analysis has moved onto the desktop and is available to all those who see its potential. here, Cross and Parker have wasted no time in stamping some ownership on the field by showing how and why social network studies within organizations should be conducted - and then how the results, those complex network diagrams can be diagnosed. They achieve a high standard here though they shy away from some of mathematical thinking that explains how the diagrams are derived: with only scant reference to terms like Betweenness, Centrality and Group Density which have become of the social network lexicon and, one would ahve thought, a useful toolset for the analysis of results. For this I mark them down one point - but overall the volume is rich in insight, clear in writing, and action-oriented: as much as anything it is a how-to guide, and HR professionals and market researchers would do well do reflect that the real dynamics within an organization do not follow the official organization chart but, rather, reflect the informal networks based on trust, knowledge and wisdom and developed by individuals as they navigate around what is usually a politically charged environment. Good insightful reading! I recommend this for researchers, HR professionals and managers.
On a broader front - here are two other books on social networks that are worth reading. Six Degrees: The Science of a Connected Age (Open Market Edition) Nexus: Small Worlds and the Groundbreaking Theory of Networks
Not bad.......2007-01-03
The book is written in an acamdemic style, you know the type of books you read in college. They are not mush fun to read, are a bit "woolly" and lack any personality.
But its an ok book. If you are interested in social networks and other networks I would recommend Mark Buchanen and books "Nexus", "Why catastrophes happen", and "Linked".
Very insightful book!.......2005-09-16
This book has been very interesting and helpful for me. It helped analyze and systemize my social networks. I recommend it to the people who want to organize their networks.

VIVIDLY REVEALS A KEY DIMENSION OF ORGANIZATIONAL SUCCESS!.......2005-04-23
This book is about how employees actually interact through networks to get work done, how such social networks function, how to analyze these networks, and ways to build and strengthen them. The major focus is on information flow and collaboration. The authors have found that a highly effective and pragmatic approach to analyzing and developing networks need not be highly complex. Their focus is on improving organizational performance by both understanding and promoting vibrant networks. The book concentrates on the factors that make a network effective and how, in practice, managers can foster the potential of a social network within and between units of organization. The discussion of factors that infuse energy into a network is excellent. So too are sections on the elements used to promote network connectivity and the six steps for conducting a social network analysis, including example questions. Based on considerable research and real-world experiences in private and public sector entities, the book is outstanding in revealing a key dimension of organizational success. It is well written, makes main points clearly, and delves into the substance of its subject. For anyone with an interest in, or engaged in, organization analysis, design, development or leadership, this book is must-reading!
Book Description
Drawing on her own long-term research and extensive work experience, Janice Klein reveals how the power of people (insiders who are able to see problems from outsider's perspective), approach ("pulling change"), and system (support infrastructure) combine to turn new ideas and concepts into institutionalized practices. In particular, certain people inside organizations "outsiders on the inside" are key to driving innovation, adaptation, and real change. Using examples from leading companies in MIT's Leaders for Manufacturing (LFM) and System Design and Management (SDM) Partnership -- such as Boeing, Intel, Motorola, Alcoa, Ford, Kodak, and others -- she shows how employees at all levels can learn how to become "an outsider on the inside," and be in the right place at the right time to discover opportunities to "pull" into their organization. Throughout, we grow to understand the perspectives of numerous "outsiders on the inside," by hearing their voices and observing their actions. The strategy Klein provides is relevant for any company that hopes to build a change capability, rather than attempt only to manage change.

This is a book for anyone interested in improving either their company, their career or their effectiveness in an organization. Although the examples come primarily from manufacturing, the concepts are equally applicable to my business which is financial services. Whether you are in senior management or an entry level employee, this book will give you a new perspective on how to facilitate the process of change within your organization and make you more valuable. Enjoy!! A worthwhile book that is easy to read and has specific ideas you can use.

Does it seem that good ideas go nowhere at your company? That meetings are often a waste of time? That nobody seems to be in charge? Roger Fisher (the coauthor of the bestselling book Getting to Yes) and Alan Sharp tackle, in their book Getting It Done, the inertia that afflicts many groups. The authors advance the idea of lateral leadership as a means of breaking apart the logjams that inhibit effective collaboration in organizations. Lateral leadership consists of five elements: clarifying the purpose of what you're trying to accomplish; understanding how to harness the power of organized thought; learning how to integrate thinking with doing; getting yourself and your team engaged; and, finally, learning how to give feedback on what's been accomplished. This is a practical guide to solving common workplace woes that will relieve the frustrations that many of us experience everyday and at the same time help us to stand out as leaders.
Book Description
Let's face it. In this chaotic world of teams, matrix management, and horizontal organizations, it's tougher than ever to get things done. How do you lead when you're not the one in charge? How can you be effective when joint action is needed? You need an edge in order to reach solutions and effectively work with others.

Great book on leadership.......2007-09-09
I recently bought this book from Amazon and really liked it. The book breaks down the leadership process and helps the reader to achieve the goals individually and then 'laterally' lead his/her team to achieve the same. Simple advice coupled with relevant examples make it easy to read and implement. Highly recommended for anyone working in a team environment.
The Goal Setting Chapter is worth the price of admission.......2007-02-21
Overall this book covers a topic we all understand, but maybe dont implement or think too much about. So - from that standpoint, its a good book to review basic team "best practises".
Specifically though, I found the chapter on Goal setting to be excellent. Being someone who is heavily into goal setting and mission statements, I still found information that was new to me. I would recommend this book, just based on that chapter.
In Conclusion - if this is the only Negotiation/Team Building book you'll read this year, then I would pass for something like "Getting to Yes" by the same Author. This is a great polish book once you've delved into other team building books.
Good Information... Nothing New..........2006-11-06
This is a good book if you've never read a book about leadership. However, it's nothing new... the 'lateral leadership' concept discussed in this book are no different than any other leadership book.
Useful for every situation........2005-02-07
Learnings from this book can be applied to many things in your life.
Maximizing You're Group's Potential.......2003-07-31
When searching online for a book on leadership, this book's title,"Getting It Done. How to Lead When You're Not in Charge", immediately grabbed my attention. It seemed perfect for what I needed a little help on. I am sure I am not alone. Everyone at one point in their life is forced into a group situation, whether it is in school, work or everyday life, where they are assigned a problem in which the group needs to accomplish together. However, before a group can solve the problem assigned, it needs to conquer the problems within the group. One of the problems that I have found to exist within every group I have been in is how to reach solutions and successfully work with others when no one knows exactly who is in charge. Everyone needs to individually take on responsibility and contribute, but it works best when you know exactly what you should focus on and the right questions to ask your group members to obtain the best results. This book does an excellent job in first of all, mapping out the problems that groups face and then going into detail by explaining the route group members should take to maximize success. Fisher and Sharp have five basic elements that groups can follow to get things done. By following these five easy steps it will give you a clear focus of how to put it all together and create a successful way to complete the tasks assigned within your group. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a little extra help to maximize their group's potential. It is very easy to read and the information and suggestions that the authors provide will be remembered and used every time I am placed in a group situation again.

A Timesaver and Lifesaver.......2007-04-04
Organization is a breeze with these great tips. Best of all, they are very easy to implement in your own home.
must read for two wage-earner households.......2007-01-05
Today, with both members of many households working, organization at home is a must if we are to have any leisure time at all to enjoy. Laura's tips for getting things done at home and organizing your life are to the point, practical, and, most importantly, easy to remember and easy to implement. Laura has provided numerous articles for OfficeOurs magazine, all of which have been very popular with our office manager and office worker readers. There is good reason she is in such demand as a speaker and we are looking forward to her keynote presentation at our annual office manager conference and future articles and books.
These books are actually fun to read, and the ideas are easy to implement! .......2006-08-11
I have two of her productivity books, and recently saw her speak. I can only say this- she knows her stuff! Her systems are lifesavers and best of all she lives by the systems she teaches. Her books are the most fun read of any 'organizer'type books I have found (I have shelves of them that I started but never finished because they bored me or made no sense).
Recently I had the opportunity to be at a training where Laura spoke on organization and finding more time, I attended two of her sessions and they were incredible. She has a terrific sense of humor and so many great examples. And unlike those speakers who spend their time selling their merchandise or systems, you really know she is there because she wants to help people enhance their ability to get organized. I highly reccomend her as a speaker for any event you have.
Help for overwhelmed moms and dads.......2006-07-16
This book is a great resource for anyone who is overwhelmed by the stuff of life. I'm a work-at-home mom, but I'm extremely organizationally challenged. Because my "work" and my "home" all involve a multitude of jobs, I'm constantly sidetracked and distracted. I run around a lot, but often have little show for it. I did like "Leave the Office Earlier", but "Find More Time" was really what I was looking for as it covers everything that clogs up my brain and helps me sort it out with easy to follow tasks. I saw myself in the section about how "to-do's" are often "projects" and don't get done because they require too many steps. Now, my challenge is to implement and USE the ideas offered by Laura.

Customer Reviews:
Affirmed to change the world.......2007-05-09
A fresh reminder of how leaders are powerless without followers, and how "the rest of us" can change the way our world and our organizations operate.
"Dreams are not realized through small investments of energy, and leaders portray this. Leadership can be seen as energy collected, directed, and released toward a future vision. "
"Belief in what could be and confidence in your supporters' ability to get you there. Your image of the world is different from the image of those who are invested in keeping the world as it is. You see the organization as it could be, in potential, and you risk taking steps toward that imagined organization." I like this book, and have greater affirmation that I can make a difference.
Great handbook on teamwork, and more.......2002-03-19
This book gave me more than I espected whenI bought it.
I was looking for some guidelines on good teamwork behavior, and I didn't got just that but far more usefull insight on plain work.
Reagarding working with others, the best part is the Feedbck chapter. You'll never give advice to a team mate in the same way after you had read this book. Everybody know someone that "takes advice the wron way", well you'll learn that maybe you and everybo else are giving advice in the wrong way.
Besides this particulary well covered subject, the author explains very usefull techniques to improove not only group workin but personal efficiency. All of this is ilustrated with down to earth examples and exercises.
I read the first edition almost one year ago, and I keep going back to it as if it was reference book, and in some way it is
Another Winning Title!.......2001-02-13
Geoffrey M. Bellman provides strategies that support personnel can use to bring about positive change in their organizations. A comprehensive table of contents allows you to go directly to the area of the book that most interests you. In fact, the author designed the book to be read in pieces and many topics stand on their own in manageable chunks. This alone makes the book a useful tool for people who are interested in "leading from the middle." The informal writing style and the many useful lists make these ideas accessible to readers who lack formal business training, and thus are likelier to work in support roles. Bellman believes that instead of complaining about your lack of power, you should build your power and get things done. We at getAbstract.com recommend this book to anyone who isn't CEO (yet).
An elementary text.......2000-10-29
I'd love to give this book two ratings. I thought that it did a good job of empowering the reader and introducing basic concepts in leadership. If that was what I was looking for, it'd get 5 stars. Unfortunately, I was hoping for something a good deal more advanced and found little that was useful to me. This isn't really a ringing criticism, since no book can reach all levels of need simultaneously. If you're relatively new to leadership, this is a good book. If you're very experienced, look elsewhere.
Brilliant!.......2000-02-10
If I take all of the management books I have read from my time at University till now and stack them up they may form a balance with this brilliant book. The wisdom, down to earth style and practical insight is not just uncommon, it is extrodinary. This book has done more to help me in different management situations than any other. The structured approach to tackling life as a manager is a solid base which leaves enough room for personal style and growth. Anyone who does not read this is at a disadvantage.
