Singing Bowls 101........2003-12-13
This is a good book for discovering the history of Singing Bowls, how they work and how to choose one. It also has a section on Tingshaws, Bell and Dorje. If your looking for a book on how to use them for healing then you should get the book "Singing Bowl Exercises for Personal harmony" by Anneke Huyser
good for beginers.......2002-09-20
This book is good for people who doesn't know anything about singing bowls, and want to know what is it all about. However, if you are trying to get some basic skill for using singing bowls, This book provide too little infomation about this.
The Lore of the Bells helps explain the Lure of the Bells.......2001-07-10
As a teacher of yoga and meditation since 1972, I first ran across these sensational Tibetan Bells (Singing Bowls) around 1985. Since then I have acquired nearly a dozen well-tuned bowls, and use them extensively in my own personal meditations, in leading group meditations, and to aid in spiritual healing.
Having collected legend, facts, and lore on these bells for many years, I was excited to find so much of what I had already learned-- plus a whole lot more-- was finally collected in one convenient and well-ordered form.
Ms Jansen's book has been a great aid in helping me to better understand both the physics and the spirituality behind the phenomenal effects that my clients and I have experienced from playing these bells. I highly recommend it to anybody who may be thinking of purchasing a Tibetan Bell, as well as to anybody who already owns one or more of these devices and wants to maximize their experience of the bowls.
THE Reference.......2000-09-17
As the new millennium unfolds, I think that this phenomenon (the influnence of sound on our sense of tranquility) is going to play a progressively more important role. When/if that happens, perhaps someone will write a "better" work on this subject. Frankly, I tend to doubt it. 1.2 million Tibetans who MAY have known the answers have so far been slaughtered by the Chinese, and the end is nowhere yet in sight. Of those who still remain, none seems able (or willing) to comment. In another generation, no one who knows the truth may survive.
I have several bowls, the largest of which is slightly in excess of 14". This bowl is capable of producing (in my consciousness, at least) the low C pedal of an organ. Since the organ pipe required to produce that tone is over 30 FEET long, as a mathematician I understand that this is physically impossible. In this book, Ms Jansen explains to you why it IS spiritually possible.
very informative handbook for beginers.......1999-10-24
The book informs people of the need in Western society to use these Bowls for Meditation & cleansing the Body & the Soul in order to release & open the door to further spiritual development. ( I Teach Meditation useing these Bowls )
Book Description
Wallace retrieves a central but often neglected biblical themethe idea of God as carnal Spirit who indwells all thingsas the basis for constructing a "green spirituality" responsive to the environmental needs of our time.
In the biblical tradition, he writes, God as Spirit is a presence that shows itself to us daily by living in and through the earth. One message of Christianity is therefore celebration of the bodily, material worldancient redwoods, vernal springs, broad-winged hawks, everyday pigweedas the place that God indwells and cares for in order to maintain the well-being of the earth.
Wallace's bold yet careful work reawakens our sense of the sacrality of the earth and the life that the trinitarian God creates there.

Wonderful Personal Teaching and Spiritual Healing Book .......2007-04-13
This is an excellent book for spiritual growth and renewel. I just bought another one for my best friend. I am reading through once for an overview, then starting again to work some of the exercises. I will be keeping this book on the shelf for a very long time for reference. Thank you!
3 stars for sheer audacity..........2005-06-02
There is an astonishing array of New Age BS out in the world today and it seems that anyone with an angle (or angel) and a gift for selling and even the most minor writing talent can get themselves a book deal. Hooray for mediocrity! I have given this book three stars for sheer audacity, but also because it serves as a lesson in how to con your way into a book deal and an audience. The woman lies about her background and, when criticized, her critics are branded as 'racists'. The book is such a hodge-podge of disjointed information and "borrowed" (polite term) techniques that I think I'll wander off and invent my own new religion based on...whatever. I'll make up some fantastical lie of a past and throw in a few other harrowing experiences and hey, voila! Book deal! Audience! I've gotta give this woman her due for temerity and lack of conscience. Read this piece of tripe and learn that you can still fool many of the people most of the time.
Might be better.......2004-09-08
All in all this book is pretty good but the author does advertise an awfull lot for her own services and products.
2 to 2 1/2 stars I suppose.......2004-08-28
I bought this book at a time when I was looking for source materials on native american culture and living for the non native american person. The book came reccomended to me by a friend who owned it with a word of caution that it was just alright. I went out and bought it, read through it and found it ok in some places and questionable in others. The author does advertise her other "for sale" services quite a bit which gets a little daunting, however there are some chapters which are well written and full of imagery. The two I liked best were her chapter on crystals where she describes a gift giving ceremony between her and friends, something which I have enjoyed doing myself. I also liked the part onbuilding your own personal altar, unlike other new age authors who proclaim altar set ups and endless tools, the author of this book tells readers to have an empty altar, perhaps covered in a sacred cloth which can be a simple focal point rather than a holder of all sorts of tools. All in all If you want this book then buy it used, use those parts of it that speak to you and discard the rest. Incidently, there is a picture of the author in the back of the book and looking at her I couldnt help but feel a bit uneasy, she dosent present a very spiritual image.

Useless.......2007-09-12
If you think that this is going to tell you how to do it, get over it. It's just a long opinion piece with virtually no how-to. And the writing style is very sophomoric.

Book Description
In this "rousing book that salutes the passion, the joy, and the pleasures of singing, music, and practice" (Spirituality and Health), Joan Oliver Goldsmith celebrates America's over 20 million singers and "teaches us that...to pursue a creative passion is a true act of love" (New Age). She guides us not only behind the scenes of choirs and ensembles but inside the making and hearing of harmonious sound. "Her words soar, growl, cry and whisper. And they inspire" (Publishers Weekly, starred review). As Goldsmith shares wisdom about finding one's voice, making mistakes, teaching, friendship, and the essential elements of creativity, "you'll learn [that] much of what she's learned from music is applicable to almost any life" (Minneapolis Star Tribune).

Huge awakening to a cross-pollinization.......2006-03-14
I've sung chorally since early in grade school, quit during the graduate years and growing a family, and when "catastrophe" hit (job, marriage, home loss- simultaneously; like the author), I also found a deep grounding in knowing that there was "rehearsal on Monday nights".
I'd not previously drawn parallels between singing and life. I just didn't recognize the metaphors.
But I've learned from this author's ability to do so, and I am grateful for her insights. I feel enriched in that way.
I've spent a bunch of time in spiritual literature. meditation, and in prayer; I've dedicated time to singing (yes- auditioned choruses; semi-paid choir gigs) but the parallels never crytallized.
They do for me in this book. I'm thankful for her awakening me to ways of relating singing to aspects of my daily life, enhancing my memories, and enriching my future in singing. And in looking for the parallels in life.
It is fun- to have my life's most significantly enjoyable times tied to how I was/am actually living; and see the relationships!
Before I go, in my view, the professional/commercial reviews of this book on Amazon and elsewhere were patronizing; assuming that the goal was a "professional" career and an apologetic for its failure.
Couldn't be further from the truth. There was not much, if any, recognition of the idea that this might have been a labor of genuine love and portrayal of amateur singing!
Or that any of the professional reviewers managed to find out the latin root of "amateur".
How can I keep from Groaning?.......2002-03-21
Perhaps I'm being too cruel. This was a "Nice" book. Ms Goldsmith has thoughtfuly considered the activity which gives her the most joy in life: emotionally, philisophically and even technically (from a layman's point-of-view). I felt as if I was reading her diary...that the diary had been written with me peering over her shoulder. I was very uncomfortable with that--as if she was waiting for my acknowlegement or approval.
The subtitle speaks of 'Music and the Passionate Life', but Ms Goldsmith's writing implies that she's seeking little more than comfort in life. Ho-hum.
Exploration of human experience or gooey sentiment? I prefer mine dry, I suppose. Make me laugh, make me cry, just don't expect for me to sit still when you rattle on....
What happens when you make a mistake?.......2002-02-01
My typical reaction in situations when I didn't succeed, when I made mistakes, was to run away. I would stop doing the activity (change jobs, refuse to play softball again, etc.) Thus, I used to hide and pretend that I knew what I was doing in choir rehersal. But I came to realize that I couldn't sing out if I was afraid of making a mistake. And the best way to do that is to not hide my mistakes, but to try to learn from them, asking questions. That the point about rehersing is to practice - and that making mistakes is part of that (and part of life). Joan Oliver Goldsmith has been there, and has learned to learn from her mistakes. Reading her book helped me learn from mine.
nice!.......2001-10-11
This is a very good book, definitely worth reading. The writer manages to inspire readers to take passionate risks and never feel its to late to live one's dream. I recommend that anybody in the "seeking" mood check this book out!
I'm hooked after one paragraph........2001-09-11
I sing in the Minnesota Chorale with Joan, and she read part of her book to us tonight. To hear her speak with that much passion was an inspiration to us all - there were tears and thunderous applause. I just bought the book and so can't truly speak for the contents - but I can speak plenty about the woman who wrote the book, and that is recommendation in itself. I can't wait to get reading!

Excellent alternative ways of perceiving your own sound........1998-11-29
This book instructs one to perceive their voice, sounds, and breath in new and palpable ways. There is thorough attention given to the musculature of the neck and shoulders as it pertains to the shape of the voice box, and excellent visualizations such as imagining allowing the sound IN during high sustained notes.

Pretty good.......2003-03-26
I must admit to a serious case of judging a book by its cover. I bought this one mainly for the beautiful title that conjured lovely images of early morning dew beading on freshly strung spider's webs in deserted meadows - almost exactly what turned out to be pictured on the cover, except the shot wasn't quite so grainy in my mind. The back cover sounded inspiring as well: "...a stirring vision of life and love in a world where there are no barriers to the spirit...Mary identifies numerous natural objects and occurrences, their symbology, and their energetic natures, yielding new insights into Grandmother Earth." Beyond being drawn to the imagery and the simple grandeur of the ideas, I had been looking for a sort of "dictionary" of plant and animal correspondences for a long time. Since Mary Summer Rain was offering a lot more than just that, I picked up the book.
The format is simple, which is always nice. For each of several categories (gemstones, rocks, metals, flowers, trees, land animals, birds, and fish, in that order) there are lists that include the name of the flower/animal/etc, its symbolic meaning, and its energetic influence. For example, an alligator symbolizes "spiritual aspects that are self-serving," and its influencing energy "helps to identify false logic of one's thinking." These lists are then followed by a question and answer section regarding the category, consisting of excerpts from readers' correspondence and Ms. Summer Rain's answers or comments. The last section of the book is about "Intuition, Wisdom, and Dream Symbology," and is constructed solely as a Q&A. Examples of questions include "I dreamed that my favorite charm was corroded. Can you help me interpret this?" and "Generally, in life, what wisdom can horseflies possibly teach us?"
Now before you start laughing (oh, alright, I did too), let me point out that the last question is actually a great starting point for thoughts about nature's wisdom. Really, did you ever think of horseflies as part of the Goddess? I swat those things on sight! But they are part of Her, just like us, and Mary Summer Rain reminds us (with that question and others) that everything in nature has something to teach, including ourselves. That's the best part of her book - that and the helpful lists, which, though I don't take them as the last word on anything, are very good for enhancing your everyday awareness of the natural world and its various layers of meaning.
So what isn't so great? Basically, the whole thing is a little disjointed. While there is certainly a connecting theme, it gets overstated instead of supported, so much so that it sometimes sounds as if Ms. Summer Rain is preaching, something we Pagans tend to take offense at. In addition, the writing itself can be choppy; occasionally the sentences are literally fragments, lacking the essential subject/verb structure. And to cap it off, now and then while reading I would get that "New-Agey" feel from the text, even though Ms. Summer Rain herself discredits or corrects many "New Age" concepts.
What all this adds up to is that I'm not going to read another of Mary Summer Rain's books unless someone gives me one - largely because of the writing style. By the same token, I feel sure I'll be referring to this one again and again for the lists. Whether you're planting a garden, healing with stones, or taking a hike, the correspondences listed here (in a single concise volume!) are invaluable for reference. The Singing Web is a celebration of the interconnectedness of life... but don't expect a whole lot of structured philosophical thought or even a free-flowing narrative. This celebration is in encyclopedia format.
The Singing Web by Mary Summer Rain.......2001-06-25
I am finding so much of value in this book. It has brought much to my household in the enligtened way that Mary Summer Rain can and does explain the world and the spiritual life we can and should live. I am re-reading it time and again, sharing with my children the wisdoms she shares.
A Very Informative Book..............2000-01-19
Readers of Mary Summer Rain Will be very pleased with Mary's New release. In This book Mary reaveals alot of information on so many different subjects.I particulary enjoy her Q&A in each chapter!I recommand this book(and all of Mary's books)to all the truth seekers out there....and They make a great gift......!
A Great Resource.......1999-12-30
There's a lot of information packed into this book! The book is divided into sections, each with specific information regarding the symbology and the influence of a wide variety of stones, minerals, metals, plants, trees, animals, birds and insects. There are also question and answer segments drawn from Mary's readers which will help further refine one's ability to find his or her own answers. This one is highly recommended.

The Healing Voice.......2006-03-28
In virtually every culture throughout history, human beings used toning, chanting and singing to praise their Creator and to heal their bodies and spirits. Our conventional Judeo-Christian culture is almost devoid of this healing tradition. Perhaps to fill this need, toning - the sustained, vibratory sounding of single tones, often vowel sounds - is quickly becoming a valuable tool for spiritually awakiening people. Bypassing language entirely, toning allows us to express the heart and soul directly, quieting the over-active left brain.

Amazon.com
Dutch singing bowl and mandala expert Anneke Huyser has written a useful and inspirational compendium on brass Himalayan singing bowls. While noting that singing bowl healing research is in its infancy, she provides the information one needs to begin collecting and using these exotic musical meditation aids for personal harmony. Beginning with the simple act of listening, Huyser guides the reader through 12 exercises to find ones own basic tone and choose a bowl to match that frequency. Identifying planet and chakra tones, combining tonal therapy with color therapy, and giving a singing bowl sound massage are also covered. Clearly a spiritual seeker, her personal philosophies concerning the use of the bowls make this book a good value for anyone interested in inner growth. Whether or not one decides to buy a singing bowl after reading this photo- and poem-graced treatise is of secondary importance. --P. Randall Cohan

Good for beginners........2005-11-30
If you have never used singing bowls before and haven't a clue where to start, this book is for you and can provide useful and clear information to get you going. If you are looking for more detailed information on this instrument's history and uses, without new-agey interpretations, there may be other places to look.
Practical and Informative........2003-12-13
This book discusses how sound effects your body. And shows you to use the sound from Singing Bowls for healing. It also discuses their makeup and how each metal is supposed to affect a person. My most informative Singing Bowl book so far.
more than sounds.......2001-09-19
This is one of the few singing bowls' books I know, the information in it, is clear, even for "beginners".
The practice and explanations on how to play the bowls and their repercutions in our mind and body are well explained.
It has several pictures of diferents singing bowl sizes, their tones for healing and harmonize, the mind, body and "spirit".
I recomend it as much as other good book written by Eva Judy Jansen.
