5 out of 5 stars History from the original source documents.......2007-04-27

"The Human Record" is a collection of primary source documents veering world history from the beginning of written history to about 1500 AD/CE. The text provides context for the original source documents and it typically is used as a companion text for many world history textbooks at the secondary and university levels. "Human Record" includes sample questions which either the student or teacher can utilize to help assess their comprehension of the material presented.

"Human Record" has been regularly updated with new editions that further add or refine previous editions, attesting to its enduring popularity as a resource at both the secondary and university levels. Outside of teachers and students however I cannot imagine there is much appeal. It does represent a wide cultural diversity of ethnic groups and religions rather than showing a Eurocentric perspective, but then again that's become the norm at both secondary and university levels rather than the norm.

4 out of 5 stars Textbook is good, amazon description bad.......2006-09-25

I had the same experience as another reviewer here (Todd) who received the 2nd in a series of two texts instead of the 1st, after ordering - because of incomplete information on Amazon's page. Fortunately, my professor will be assigning the 2nd text in the near future. However, given the lack of a photograph on Amazon's page, it is very difficult to determine which book one will receive after ordering. Will someone at Amazon please fix this?

1 out of 5 stars Imcomplete information for the item listed.......2006-08-29

I hate to be negative, I'm an eternal optimist with Captain Crunch and all, but this item, not featuring any sort of cover photo or volume number, is misleading. I really needed the Human Record Vol. I, 5th Ed., but was sent Human Record Vol. II. I can imagine it was an honest mistake but I will now have to buy the book for a far greater price at my college's book store. I suppose this is what happens when you try to get your education at a reasonable price hey?

4 out of 5 stars Well, we use it........2000-08-19

This is the book we use in my history class. The nice part of this text is that the authors give samples of literature from many cultures. You can see the contrasts of each civilizations and the diffrences in their beliefs of mortality, and their views on justice and social class. In all the text is well written, however the time spent on each specific culture could have been more informative. An example is the Egyptian civilization. My opinion is that more detail should have been paid to this civilization. If this book is required reading for your class, I would encourage you to buy this book through Amazon, as I paid more for my copy and it was used at that!

Book Description

Unlike some other world history texts that center on the West, The Human Record provides balanced coverage of the global past. The book features both written and artifactual sources that are placed in their full historical contexts through introductory essays, footnotes, and focus questions.

The text sheds light on the experiences of women and non-elite groups while maintaining overall balance and a focus on the major patterns of global historical developments through the ages.

If you are needing the 5th Edition for a class, Do not be fooled that the 4th is the exact same. The majority of the documents are exactly the same but a few key ones are not there. It depends if you want to do the extra work to save a few dollars...so far it's been ok for me...

5 out of 5 stars A Review of The Human Record: Sources of Global History.......2000-05-28

The Human Record: Sources of Global History is an excellent introduction for History students in analyzing and discussing primary source material. The editors have selected not only the most interesting but also the most useful sources in World History. Selections range from the Epic of Gilgamesh, The Book of Genesis, Code of Hammurabi, the Analects, Bhagavad Gita, etc. The only critque I have is that some of the selections are rather short but if used in conjunction with a text book like Traditions and Encounters: A Global Perspective on the Past, and other supplemental material this book will prove beneficial to instructors and students of any World History course. cdeluca@citrus.ucr.edu

This book is great to me but my teacher says it's missing alot of information. However it is easy to read, and comprehend.

4 out of 5 stars A good book not for beginners, not for pros.......2000-07-02

Essentials of Human Diseases and Conditions looks and reads much like my college anatomy and physiology text with a good glossary and many colorful illustrations. It does not have pre- or post- tests, or chapter objectives or reviews. The book is easy on the eyes and easy to browse; not formatted as a crowded exhaustive reference.

The book is a well organized and indexed study of the most common human diseases (Cushings syndrome is represented, pheochromocytoma is not.) The text is arranged by the human body systems. The diseases of each system are presented first with discussion of symptoms and indications, then origin and cause, then methods of diagnosis, and finally treatment

The book's preface indicates it was written for "students of clinical medicine in the fields of medical assisting, medical transcription, insurance coding and other allied health programs who have had an introduction to basic anatomy and physiology of the human body and to medical terminology". I do agree there are prerequisites to the text; it is not a "home and family" reference. I am a degreed medical radiological technologist with some years of experience and wanted a quick reference to review the disease processes of some of the patients I do CTs on. The book is useful but not as complete as I would like. I will need to supplement it with an extensive, harder on the eyes and harder to browse reference.

    Book Description

Wayne Herschel, in a culmination of 15 years of research on archaeo-astronomy, has unraveled an extraordinary secret. It identifies the origins of Leonardo Da Vinci's "Vitruvian man" human blueprint code with Stonehenge and the pyramid sites around the world. Herschel stumbled on `Da Vinci's secret geometry' at Giza in Egypt and realized that all 50 of the pyramids of Lower Egypt appear to represent the brightest stars forming constellations along the length of the Milky Way. But more importantly, there is the proverbial x that marks the spot and that claims cryptically that human lineage is associated with what appears to be another Sun-like star. The author also proves that Stonehenge has the same cosmic solution and that the pyramid layouts of the Maya, the Incas, the Khmer and many others around the world, all repeat the same star map theme. They all exhibit the same obsession with one nearby Sun-like star in Taurus, a star that the ancients passionately refer to as the star of their gods. This 289-page full-color glossy book takes the reader on a riveting journey from one clue to the next, presenting numerous forgotten ancient texts and artifacts. The Hidden Records presents the strongest evidence to date that humans have never ever been alone in this vast universe.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Rip off?.......2007-09-30

It LOOKS nice...lots of big bright detailed pictures and it reads nice(the author's admits his 'girlfriend' practically wrote the book for him b/c he apparently had bad writing skills...). The information is practically a repeat of stuff found in other books like Robert Bauval's The Orion Mystery...the bibliography for the book is meager...but the author does add an interesting fresh new perspective to some of history's enigmas...he proposes that the Giza pyramids are only HALF of a bigger star map and he inclueds very convincing visuals to show it!

The only thing I found odd were the actual pictures of him and his co-author in Egypt...it looked so FAKE like they were standing in front of a bluescreen or their images were cropped out in photoshop and pasted onto some Egyptian scene. Kinda funny too because they are in this 'Indian Jones' garb with no sweat on them whatsoever...it's as if the author felt he had to sell an image of an 'adventuring archaeologist' in order to sell his book...CHEESY.

All in all beautiful thought provoking book; I had no problem putting down 20 dollars for it and can't wait for the other ones to come in the series...I'm taking it with a cautionary grain of salt though ofcourse ; )

5 out of 5 stars Intriguing, thought provoking, and credible!.......2007-04-13

I was simply amazed at the content that's in this book. It is very thought-provoking, and I find it entirely credible. Mr. Herschel has studied this out thoroughly and generously shares what he has found with each of us. The truths he has discovered will probably upset some, those who are used to thinking inside the box and don't like for their applecarts to be upset... but there is just too much evidence to ignore. He is definitely onto something, one of the major discoveries of our time. I would recommend it to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating info, poorly written.......2007-02-07

As intriguing as I find the information presented in this book, I cannot recommend actually READING the thing! I give it four stars for content and overall appearance. It's well-printed on glossy paper with beautiful photographs and great illustrations, but the authors' carelessness with regard to attribution makes me feel that many of the images were simply stolen. I'm not saying they were, but that is how it makes me feel: I was unable to find a single attribution, even when the text stated that some images were photocopied at a library or generated by an unnamed commercial computer program. There IS a fair-sized bibliography, but no indication of what came from where. Perhaps the law is different in South Africa.

As for the writing, it is redundant to the point of ennui, and full of . . . dramatic moments! If you only read the captions, you'll get almost all of the story; there's so much repetition that the body text is unnecessary until nearly the end of the book. A professional editing job--even a copy-edit--would improve the book tremendously. Also, the typeface and leading are atrocious...or am I just getting too old? :) The point size was so small I had to use reading glasses and much brighter light than I normally read by.

I find the main message of the book extremely feasible. Herr Herschel believes that pyramids and other monuments all over the Earth--and even Mars--indicate that intelligent life came from a particular star in the general direction of the Pleiades in the Taurus constellation. (Mr. Herschel believes this intelligent life was human, but I have seen a lot of evidence elsewhere that indicates otherwise. Still, it's plausible that they may have been the progenitors for humanity.)

This star is not nearly as far away as the Pleiades, and is thought to be less than 20 light years from Earth. Frankly, other than its similarity to our Sun, not much is known about it. Mr. Herschel identifies this star for us near the end of the book, showing its catalog number and path over the past 17,250 years or so.

Overall, I recommend this book to anyone who is open-minded enough to believe we might not be the only thing God created. :)

5 out of 5 stars Read it and draw your own conclusion.......2006-09-26

By far a very thorough and intelligent read. I could not put it down.

The evidence that pyramids all over earth from a lost epoch of man align to specific star clusters is overwhelming in my opinion.

Doesn't take a PhD to realize that if something looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck.... chances are it's a duck.

Everthing is presented via full color images and in an easy to comprehend format. It has changed my perspective and at the same time answered many questions for me personally; and of course will raise many more!

    An absolute must read!

5 out of 5 stars A new and iconoclastic analysis of coded information presented in ancient or prehistoric structures .......2006-08-11

"The Hidden Records: The Star of the Gods" is a new and iconoclastic analysis of coded information presented in ancient or prehistoric structures such as the pyramids of Egypt, Stonehenge, and the ancient edifices of both the Americas. Wayne Herschel presents in vast and colorful detail his painstaking conclusions after many years of study of these diverse 'star-maps' of antiquity. Many color photographs and illustrations help to document his many findings, some of which are shattering to established or conventional science. Readers will want to follow this material closely as further evidence unfolds and is analyzed. The idea of ancient astronauts is perhaps not new; but the evidence is startling and convincingly presented. Profusely illustrated in color throughout, The Hidden Records is a welcome and recommended addition to personal and academic Metaphysical Studies collections, as well as supplemental reading lists in the fields of astronomy, mythology, and ancient history.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough and Detailed.......2007-01-02

This is a thorough and detailed book which covers a wide range of tips that you should find useful and important in enhancing your communication skills. The book covers all the critical aspects of communication including the communication process, the need for effective, active listening, verbal, non-verbal and writing skills, being assertive, effective negotiations, effective public speaking and presentations, among others.

Most of us are poor listeners, as we tend to listen with intent to response rather than to understand what the speaker is really communicating to us. With self-control and discipline, the book gives us tips that we can follow to be effective and active listeners.

This is a self-help that is easy to read and understand and follow. It has a lot of tips and practical advice that should help you change to become a more effective communicator.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Compendium of 1042 Communication Tips.......2006-06-20

A comprehensive compendium of 1042 tips belonging on every committed communicator's reference shelf. Whether a neophyte or accomplished communicator, you will find a useful tip or reminder, each time you open this book.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to Read.......2006-02-24

Dianna Booher writes with clarity and detail, and her book is so easy to read. We're all communicating in one way or another, and Dianna's insights are extremely valuable. You also might learn something about yourself as a listener. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for anyone.......2002-12-25

While this book has a business focus, there are many techniques shown that can be used in all facets of life - in the family, with friends, or in organizations and sports teams. It's a huge (1000+) list of tips for various situations. How do you deal with someone who's not pulling their weight? You don't have to be a manager at work - you can have unresponsive kids, friends who take much more than they give, and committee members who are just along for the ride.

All the points are obvious, but in real life we forget, communicate badly, and then make a bad situation worse. This book has the sort of information that someone gives you when they say, "In that situation I always do . . ." and you could hit yourself for not thinking of it at the time. If you read and re-read this book you'll begin to have these ideas when you need them, not afterward.

The tip formula is excellent. Too many books try to put ideas across in ordinary text and become confusing and unclear. Each tip and its supporting text is complete. You won't be left wondering what the author meant.

I teach people to make presentations and there is plenty here I intend to pass along. My order is in for Booher's forthcoming "Speak With Confidence," because if it's even half as good as this book, it will be invaluable.

One last thought. Think about the times you didn't communicate that well. Think about the stress, the bad relations with other people, and all the negative things that resulted. Now look at the price of this book. Isn't it worth that price just to communicate effectively one time, let alone all the times this book will save the day?

      1 out of 5 stars RIP OFF.......2002-02-18

The only thing exciting about the book is the title. I could not wait to get the book and read it. I can't remember being this disappointed in a book - ever. There is nothing of any value in this - just warmed over hyperbole. I am so po'd that I wasted money on this rip off.

        Book Description

Deep in the heart of the largely unexplored jungles of the Yucatan lies a storehouse of records telling the history of all humanity and revealing the origin and meaning of life. According to the "Sleeping Prophet" Edgar Cayce, nearly 13,000 years ago these records were buried at three separate locations in the world. The Hall of Records at Giza in Egypt has eluded discovery and a second hall is covered by the Atlantic Ocean near Bimini. The third Hall, located in the general area of the Yucatan, may now be nearing discovery. The site ‹ Piedras Negras, Guatemala ‹ is concealing ancient buried records.

In this compelling book, John Van Auken, author of numerous Cayce-related books, and Dr. Lora Little present Cayce's story of how and why a Hall of Records was established in the Yucatan. Backed by solid archaeological evidence and astronomical correlations, the authors show how the Mayan creation story involves the constellation Orion and why Piedras Negras is the likely site of the Hall of Records. In addition, the authors reveal that Cayce has told us what is recorded in the Hall of Records through his many Akasha "readings." Finally, an explanation of the current cycle of the Maya calendar points to the end of our age in 2012 and the beginning of a strange, new era. Illustrated with 162 pictures, maps, and line drawings, fully indexed.

3 out of 5 stars Lots of information weakened by too much supposition.......2007-01-09

There is lot of information here about the Pedras Negras site. The authors have collected information from a variety of sources and compiled them into this book. I believe one of the authors spouses (Greg Little) has even been to the site. Given that there are so few readily available resources on this site this book has value to anyone interested in Mayan sites.

Where the book fails to deliver is that ultimately it becomes a speculative piece trying to loosely tie Cayce predictions to findings and activity at the site. You get a lot of 'if', 'perhaps', and 'possibly' kind of talk. There is much waffling as to whether the correct years match, or the correct research teams from the 1930s, lots of confusion that is not really cleared up. After wading half-way through the book you realize the authors can prove little, if anything, in the way of any substanative connection between Cayce and Pedras Negras. Even more tenuous are Caycian references to this area of Central America being founded by surviors of Atlantis, etc. Not that Atlantis could not have seeded the Olmecs and/or Mayans, but that this book does not deliver in terms of making any firm arguments.

Towards the last third of the book the site Pedras Negras is largely left aside and we are taken on a ride through theories about the Akashic records and what supposedly occured in earth's past. What started as a marginally scientific work quickly turns into a mythical story book. Again, not that what the book says happened could not have occurred, but that the information is presented with no confirmation and nothing for you to really latch onto.

Ultimately metaphysical books today dealing with sacred sites MUST evolve to the point that the reader can actually get some understanding either of the site or how to interpret it for themselves. The authors do attempt to present concepts and ties such as the firestone of Cacye's reading to various elements at Pedras Negras. What is to be done with the firestone? If you are really into Atlantis then you might realize any physical technology was involved in Atlantis' destruction (sons of Belial) because the true priesthood would have cultivated internal power, not external power. The real halls of records are etherial (not necessarily Akashic). Looking for physical answers will only keep you within the physical. This is a huge change of view that was missed in this book.

The book fails to give you a better understanding of the Maya (better left to Friedel and Schele), and do not give you the solid archeological information (that was directly done by UPenn and now by BYU). You also find almost no solid information which would allow you to step into the intents and consciousness of the founders or occupants of the site. At the least mainstream archeology provides this insight. But this book has spent most of its capital focused on making connections back to Cayce. And Cayce was wrong about more than one thing (sorry Cayce fans, the poles did not flip in 1998) so trying to use him as the nexus for important research will tend to be both frustrating and error prone.

The experiential reader will pick up a couple of elements worthy of personal investigation including the mineral hematite and the six pointed diagrams presented.

4 out of 5 stars Good Update On The Cayce Material.......2004-09-08

This book helps bring the reader up to date about the search for one of the lost halls of records described by the psychic Edgar Cayce. Interestingly Cacye indicated there are three identical sets of records which are all the same and are somehow really part of the same thing. This seems to parallel the idea of The Holy Trinity.

In this case the focus is on the lost hall down in the Yucatan. The other sites are at the Giza plateau in Egypt and Bimini near the Bahamas where Atlantis sank.

The conclusion as I understand it is some of the artifacts related to the lost hall may have already been discovered and they are in various museums but people don't realize what they are. Cayce indicated that back in the 1930s people had actually discovered some stones that had strange powers but they 'know so little about them'.

But the actual lost hall hasn't been discovered yet and nobody is really sure where it is exactly.

Van Auken believes he had lived in ancient Egypt in a past life and was some type of priest. He was in the great pyramid and was levitated off the ground and into the mysterious fire inside the pyramid.

A lot of the material in this book diverges from the search for the lost hall and gets into a discussion of Edgar Cayce's prophecies about the akashic record. The akashic record is the 'book' that contains the history of every souls activities in this earthly plain. Cayce was able to read from this psychic book.

The authors have another book out which expands on the akashic record and other things called 'Secrets Of The Ancient World'.

5 out of 5 stars I know the author and he is brilliant on this subject!.......2002-09-25

I have been to workshops with John Van Auken and he has
a tremendous capacity and knowledge of ancient wisdom...that
seems to supercede what one can learn from distilling normal
history books, on site investigations, and even reading the
Edgar Cayce material...its as if he "lived there, lived then,
and has a remarkable capacity to remember it all and reveal it
        clearly and effectively"....
This book is another splendid example of John's crystal
clear and profoundly deep capacity to share his knowledge
in a manner that both layman and passionate scholar can grasp.

5 out of 5 stars Knowledge Lost, Knowledge Found.......2001-01-04

What is a myth? Perhaps it's a story that isn't true on the outside, but is true on the inside. The tension between what our heart's intuition tells us and what we can actually experience on the outside is a source of great creativity and development, both personal and for the human race. Cayce's story of the history and destiny of humanity is a lesson here. Not only does his story include our spiritual creation and its purpose, but also the external history of life on planet earth, including predictions about major changes ahead. Is this story a myth? For many of those who contemplate it, his story is stimulating and spiritually fulfilling, which is what a good myth should do, whereas traditional religion has lost its ability to inspire. But Cayce presents his story as being literally true. Did things really happen the way he tells it?One of the fascinating aspects of his story concerns the existence of "Halls of Records," where this history is recorded. He said that one such Hall of Records was in Yucatan, Mexico. Furthermore, he said that at this site, there was also evidence of another key element in Cayce's story--the (in)famous "Firestone Crystal" of Atlantis, which was their source of power, but which had been misused and helped bring down that civilization.I vividly remember discovering the Edgar Cayce material and having my imagination sparked as never before by the story of the Firestone and its connection with Mayan imagery. Soon I was making pilgrimages to Yucatan to search for the Hall of Records. Whereas the external search was expensive and proved beyond my skill range, an inner search was also in progress and was more rewarding. I developed a symbolic meaning for the Firestone crystal; namely, that there is a dormant power of consciousness that can be awakened in spiritual community. Through group dream work (such as Atlantic University's Sundance: The Community Dream Journal) and interpersonal intuition of the heart, I was able to verify the tremendous creative power and wisdom that may be unleashed through cooperation when individuality is given equal footing with the unitive effort. As I became more involved with researching the inner meaning of the Firestone, my fascination with Yucatan and prehistory faded. But today I am inspired to turnabout, to look again with interest toward the outer side of the story. What motivates this revival comes through the publication of a significant book, The lost hall of records: Edgar Cayce's forgotten record in the ancient Yucatan (Eagle Wing Books). The author's, John Van Auken, a past executive director at A.R.E., and Lora Little, Ed.D., a psychologist, have spent years correlating information in the Edgar Cayce material with archaeological findings. In their meticulously researched book they have integrated a panoramic view of Cayce's spiritual story with scientific findings that take the story out of realm of pure myth and into the realm of history. Archaeological research, including advances in the interpretation of Mayan heiroglyphs and what they reveal about the Mayans' astonishing astronomical observations, has made it possible as never before to suggest that Cayce's story just might be true on the outside. Moreover, Van Auken and Little's research has made a significant breakthrough that makes their book as newsworthy as it is inspiring.A key point in Cayce's remote viewing of the Mayan archaeological findings concerned some artifacts, emblems of the Firestone, that were stored in the University of Pennsylvania museum. Previous investigations had failed to locate these artifacts in the museum's collection. The authors make a strong case, however, that the artifacts in question were those found in the site known as Piedras Negras, a Mayan ruins in Guatamala. Not in the state of Yucatan, Mexico, but part of the Mayan civilization in the general area of the Yucatan pennisula, nevertheless Piedras Negras could easily be described by Cayce's psychic perception as "Yucatan." Making this slight shift in focal point has unleased a provocative set of new findings. Athough there isn't space here to detail all the nitty gritty that the authors combine to paint a credible hypothesis about the external validation of Cayce's story, suffice it to say that they've excited me again to the possibility that there just might be a Hall of Records in that tropical jungle, as well as a model of the Firestone crystal.I am reminded of Cayce's statement that the records would be found and could be read only when the consciousness of the seeker matched the contents of those records. The lesson for me is that while an inner search is important, not to be forgotten is that it is equally important to look to the outer reality as well. Maybe it is time for me to make a return trip to the Mayan ruins to see what I shall see.

5 out of 5 stars More Grist For The Path.......2000-12-29

If you are interested in broadening your horizons from more traditional ideas and take a look at what they did not teach you in school in your history classes then this book is a great read. If you already have some background as I did it will fill in some of the blanks for you. It certainly is well documented and detailed. This book definitely challenges my Catholic School view of how things began...probably not the way the Protestants taught it either. Having "knocked around" the "psychic" literature (Cayce, Seth, and a few others) I already was quite familiar with Edgar Cayce. This book deepens my understanding of the man and his work. Over the last 10 years my massage therapist has been telling me about all things Mayan and what is said to be coming in 2012 and beyond. I thought he was a bit "out there" if you know what I mean. Now I have some understanding of what he has been talking about at a more "rational" level. I particularly liked the sections of the book on the Akashic records and the Cayce "reading" of those records. I also appreciated the parts of the Bible that were discussed and what the Bible's authors were trying to say in story form. I would recommend this book for those who are interested in furthering their knowledge in the area of spirituality, psychic phenomena, archeology, and anthropology. It will leave you with plenty of food for thought.
