Book Description
The Special Edition is the first two volumes of the Fretboard Logic guitar series combined with a special discount. Part One deals with the pattern organization of the fretboard which results from the guitar's unique tuning system. Part Two teaches the tone groups of music - Chords, Scales and Arpeggios - by building them in the context of this pattern organization, and thereby eliminating the usual guesswork and rote memorization associated with these areas of a guitarist's education. This alone can take years off the learning curve. Combined, the two parts form a solid foundation by which a guitarist can intelligently pursue the music styles of their own choosing, and play them on the guitar types which they prefer.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic book!.......2007-10-06
This book is all about the CAGED system. At first there was some skepticism about the whole theory of the Caged System, you know--I figured it would be better to learn the fretboard in a more natural way--by notes and by memory, not by patterns. However, as I went deeper into my studies and deeper into this book, it made me realize how ESSENTIAL patterns are to learning guitar. Everything in life comes in patterns, and the CAGED system is one of the most important and simple patterns to memories. I find this book astonishing and intelligent--a great read!

Let me save you some time and money, again . . ........2007-08-15
I originally wrote this review for Volume I, but it applies here too.
The reviews below all sound wonderful, even the ones that weren't five stars. Too good to be true I thought, so I only bought Volume I, rather than the box set. After a week of study, and occasionly rereading the same paragraph over and over until I got it, I too will say that this book did more for me in a week than all the decades of playing guitar and buying countless other books.
Still I was skeptical about the other volumes, so I decided that rather than buy the box set with the DVD I'd just buy the combination of Volumes I and II, and give Volume I to a friend. After spending some time with Volume II, I realized I needed the DVD. Amazon just emailed today saying the box set of three volumes plus the DVD has just shipped.
Let me save you some time and money - buy the box set with the DVD. I say that without having seen the DVD, but from what I see with Volumes I and II, I think you're going to want to do that. Like everyone else, I only wish that I had discovered this book when I was a kid.
Fretboard Logic SE: The ultimate guitar book !!!.......2007-07-10
Simply said this is a must... I played the guitar for 6 years and I was blind as regard as the fretboard... Not anymore :-))
DON'T BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU WANT TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY GUITAR!.......2007-07-07
First let me say this he takes some stabs a Mel Bay books but the thing is Mel Bay books teach you how to READ MUSIC. I wasted weeks reading this book and its cryptic if you ask me.You can learn the notes on the fretboard way faster if you know all your octaves IMHO. This book is a waste of good paper.
Very tough for a complete novice.......2007-05-13
As I v'e read in other reviews, this book goes from major open string chords straight to barre chords which at this stage in the game I am not capable of doing. I like the logic presented here and will come back to this book once I've developed more hand strength and basic skills.

Anatomy & Physiology Flash Cards.......2007-09-26
Good condition for used cards one of the cards was written on. Educational & fun to use in study groups.
Disappointing.......2007-05-10
These flash cards are disappointing in the pictures being drawn in black and white. The info on the back of the cards is very sparse... Clumsy to work with. Printed on inferior quality paper for flash cards.
Glaring misspelling right on the cover!.......2007-03-11
I was considering buying these cards, but the gross error on the cover has given me cause for pause. (Cover reads: AND A+! It should read AN A+!) Makes me wonder how many other mistakes there might be! Thank you.
Great Study Buddy!.......2007-01-29
These card helped me in several classes! What a great product. I hope that anyone interested in the medical field that is beginning, buy the cards, you will not regret them. I read them in line at the bank, going through the car wash...they are the perfect study buddy!
simple anatomy.......2007-01-11
I find using this flashcard i was able to improve my grades both in lecture and labaratory. The only drawback is not having the diagrams in color.

ASIN: 0521077915 |
Book Description
Part 2 of volume I deals with the history of the Near East from about 3000 to 1750 B.C. In Egypt, a long period of political unification and stability enabled the kings of the Old Kingdom to develop and exploit natural resources, to mobilize both the manpower and the technical skill to build the pyramids, and to encourage sculptors in the production of works of superlative quality. After a period of anarchy and civil war at the end of the Sixth Dynasty the local rulers of Thebes established the so-called Middle Kingdom, restoring an age of political calm in which the arts could again flourish. In Western Asia, Babylonia was the main centre and source of civilisation, and her moral, though not always her military, hegemony was recognized and accepted by the surrounding countries of Anatolia, Syria, Palestine, Assyria and Elam. The history of the region is traced from the late Uruk and Jamdat Nasr periods up to the rise of Hammurabi, the most significant developments being the invention of writing in the Uruk period, the emergence of the Semites as a political factor under Sargon, and the success of the centralized bureaucracy under the Third Dynasty of Ur.

Customer Reviews:
cliffs micro.......2007-07-31
I'm in a very fast paced micro class. Our class is only 5 weeks long and we get the same amount of info as a normal length term. This book is going to be a life saver! I'm so glad I got it. And spending the extra $1 to see it and print some pages out on line while waiting for it to come in was a huge help, too.
Horrible Product.......2005-11-30
These are great flashcards unless you actually want to learn and pass your microbiology class. Not only is the content poor, several of the cards in my pack were improperly printed with half the text cut off. No wonder they come sealed in plastic at the bookstore, if I had had the chance to look at them before I bought them i would have known better. They do work well for leveling a wobbly table though.
thank you.......2003-07-01
thank you for the fast delivery of the book.
Great reference.......2003-06-27
This book made medical microbiology much easier. I used this book for my medical microbiology class. It is easier to understand and it cut my study time because it was to the point. I also used the following:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (ISBN:0971999635)
The second book helped me prepare for the kind of questions on my medical microbiology tests. In fact, both these books helped me to get a 93 average in my medical microbiology class. I was recommended these two books from a friend of mine in another med school. He also got high grades on his medical microbiology exams.
flash cards were disorganized and hard to read.......2002-06-28
Although others seemed to enjoy this method of learning, I found the cards disorganized and hard to use with repeated sections. I felt it was a waste of $. I still earned an A in Microbiology but found the "Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple" much more helpful. Best of luck!

Customer Reviews:
Great for quick studying .......2007-07-08
This book was a great help in addition to my text book in Biology. It helps to compact information so I was able to pick out only the facts. This is a great tool for people who are trying to CLEP their Biology.
Very helpful........2007-01-16
I used this book to help me prepare for the PRAXIS II content knowledge test in biology (it's one of those awful standardized tests). It was generally very good at covering all of the topics necessary in a concise and easy-to-understand manner. There were occasions when I was less impressed by the way in which a topic was explained or laid out, but it is definitely a good supplement or review for someone who has other sources for learning or re-learning the material. (My main gripe was with photosynthesis.) But for a 200 page book on the vast topic of biology, it certainly did its job, and helped me pass my test.
good .......2005-09-02
The book was what I needed but I later had to find more information to complete my work. Overall the book was fine. The service, well it took forever to get here, but okay.
Great reference for college bio.......2004-08-15
This book is definitely written in a reader friendly manner. It's nice and brief. It gets right to the point without having to read the same passage over and over again. I also recommend:
The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations
(Volume 1: isbn 1933023007)
(Volume 2: isbn 1933023015)
(Volume 3: isbn 1933023023)
These three study guides helped me to get excellent grades. They had the kind of questions that I got on my college biology tests. The Biology Cliff Notes made biology learning a lot faster.
Good supplement.......2003-08-31
This is a good supplement for those taking a biology class. Explains things in a nice, condensed version. Reinforces knowledge in an easy, concise manner.
Recommend to parents helping their children with their high school biology class.
Book Description
Dedicated as few men have been to the life of reason, Bertrand Russell has always been concerned with the basic questions to which religion also addresses itself -- questions about man's place in the universe and the nature of the good life, questions that involve life after death, morality, freedom, education, and sexual ethics. He brings to his treatment of these questions the same courage, scrupulous logic, and lofty wisdom for which his other work as philosopher, writer, and teacher has been famous. These qualities make the essays included in this book perhaps the most graceful and moving presentation of the freethinker's position since the days of Hume and Voltaire.
"I am as firmly convinced that religions do harm as I am that they are untrue," Russell declares in his Preface, and his reasoned opposition to any system or dogma which he feels may shackle man's mind runs through all the essays in this book, whether they were written as early as 1899 or as late as 1954.
The book has been edited, with Lord Russell's full approval and cooperation, by Professor Paul Edwards of the Philosophy Department of New York University. In an Appendix, Professor Edwards contributes a full account of the highly controversial "Bertrand Russell Case" of 1940, in which Russell was judicially declared "unfit" to teach philosophy at the College of the City of New York.
Whether the reader shares or rejects Bertrand Russell's views, he will find this book an invigorating challenge to set notions, a masterly statement of a philosophical position, and a pure joy to read.
Customer Reviews:
shocked to discover Russell is an antisemite.......2007-09-14
I was extremely shocked and pained to read Russell's essay Ideas That Have Helped Mankind (as well as his writings on China) and discover that he was a flaming antisemite, and also something of a fool.
He writes: "We know what the Nazis did to Jews at Auschwitz. In mass cruelty, the expulsions of Germans ordered by the Russians fall not very far short of the atrocities perpetuated by the Nazis." Here he is skirting close to Holocaust denial, comparing post-war suffering of East Germans to genocide of 90% of Europe's Jews!
Elsewhere he lists the contributions of Jewish ethics to Western civilization as fanaticism and intolerance, and pretends that we got our belief that all men are created equal from the Stoics and the New Testament, with quotes that are mere paraphrases from the Hebrew Bible. He ignores all the Jewish lessons on equality and sacredness of every life including, Love thy neighbor as thyself. This is pure religious bigotry. What a hypocrite!
What is truly distressing is that his antisemitic comments from the book on China have been picked up and repeated by Chinese web sites today, so Russell's evil deeds are poisoning the present.
The Hobo Philosopher.......2007-09-09
Well, clearly if you are a Christian you will indubitably not relish this work nor would I see any reason why you would want to buy it. This book is for those who do not find Christianity appealing. Russell has many arguments that are logical and rational. This book is not difficult. It is not harsh. It is not mean spirited. I have read many others that are much more denigrating. Russell stays well above the shallow and vicious. He backs his arguments with history, science and logic. He is simple and to the point. This book is old. I bought my first copy back in the late 50's. But for those non-Christians and semi-Christians who are newly starting on the road to dubiousness and other possibilities, this book is as relevant as it ever was. Common sense doesn't really change all that much.
Why I am not a Christian is only one of several essays in this book. There is another great one on the Fate of Tom Paine and there is also a concise explanation of Russell personal beliefs. I've read this book several times and I will read it again, I'm sure.
The Fount Of Much Modern Criticism of Christianity.......2007-05-23
If you have read any of Richard Dawkins' or Sam Harris' works, you will recognize immediately, as did I, that essentially they have not progressed very far in the main from what Russell was saying at the turn of the 20th century.
Russell writes clearly and with wonderful wit. This book is easy to read, accessible at all levels and straight forward in its conclusions. I disagree with Russell on just about everything, but there is no denying the consistency of his thought nor his willingness to live consistently what that which he espouses.
His multiple marriages and numerous liaisons are absolutely convergent with his disapproval of any societal strictures against sexual freedom. He adamantly insists that all moral formulations only reflect the inherent desires of those who espouse them. This leads him to conclude that there is no absolute difference between the poet and the murderer and that it is illogical to build a statue to one and to consign the other to the realm of shame. To Russell, all human actions result from the combined causality of genetics and social conditioning and that we should no more look down upon one who is doing criminal things than we should look down upon a person who has the measles.
Like most radical liberals of his day Russell understood education as the realm of the Messiah. Education, under the guidance of enlightened thinkers such as himself, would radically alter and improve the human specie so that we could hope to live lives of love and freedom. Utopia beckons, we have only to embrace it rationally and pursue it energetically.
In all his brilliance Russell never comes to grips in these essays with his primary problem. He was totally lacking in grounds on which to criticize the rising stars of Hitler and Mussolini other than the fact that their methods and their conclusions differed from his own. He had no standard other than appeal to like sympathies in others to say that perhaps the manner and nature of those regimes was worse or better than his own. He cannot discover in the world of science why "what is" is either "what ought" or "what ought not" to be.
Read the book and discover the ultimate vacuity of a world view without external referrent.
A Must. Do read it, please........2007-04-24
Russell teaches to be atheist, a concept none can develop if left, unarmed since a boy, under the havy bombings of christian ideas.
THINK ABOUT IT.......2007-03-14
Isn't it interesting that Mr. Russell claims that all religions are shackles to the mind, but yet why is it that only Christians are attacked, even the title of this book is WHY I AM NOT A CHIRSTIAN, well if it's true that Mr., Russell believes this of all religions why is only Christianity attacked? Why is it that out of all the religious leaders in history of all the religions only Christ is made fun of, only Christ is repeatedly sought out to be disproved...Because HE IS THE TRUTH. The world and things of this world will never understand that. But lies will always attack the truth. Granted there are fanatics to every religion, but if you want to know the truth find a REAL Christian. They are rare to be found but there are still a few.

Customer Reviews:
Conflicted.......2007-08-11
This is a very difficult review. In the first instance I have to agree with the other reviewer that this is appalling software, totally exhausting a CPU (which, for the non-techs, is absolutely unnecessary). This is especially important because the software is essential to the course, not just an optional extra, and if you use a laptop your fan will be going flat out throughout your lesson which is quite distracting. The interface is also totally modal, like something you would see in the 80s. This gives a very disjointed and inflexible experience.
On the other hand, I really think the course itself is so well designed that it might just succeed in teaching Mandarin to a Westerner, even one with no inherent language ability. It introduces elements in a very deliberate and intelligent way, has most of the content that I had hoped for, and exceeded my expectations.
5 stars for the course design. 0 stars for the accompanying software.
Good book, good methodology but poor CD Tutor design.......2006-08-10
While I'm pleased with the methodology, the quality of the book and the exercises, I'm disappointed with the CDROM Tutor application. The user interface design is very poor and unintuitive. Certain sound files are corrupted since clicking them results in an error message ("computer memory is full"). As a result, pronounciation is unavailable for those characters. At the lowest level, the application must also be poorly coded since it constantly consumes 98% CPU power on a powerful PC. In this day and age, the application ought to be browser-based. I recommend that the author overhaul the application and port it to a new technology.
Would I buy it again? - yes.......2006-07-16
First this review is from a beginners point of view, and after looking to buy a chinese "course" among several titles I decided for this book and I do not regret the decision. Now to the review: This book is decent but the software that accompanies it makes it good, do not be discouraged that it is not "excellent", you DO can learn chinese with this book. Firts lets talk about the negative aspects of this book and its CDROM. It focuses on writing and reading and not so much in speaking or hearing. For instance, on the book you barely get any mention of the famous 4 tones of chinese, but in the CDROM you can hear every character of the book and also see a simple diagram of how is the tone pronnounced (like going from a high to low tone ); sadly the pronounciation is not as clear a one would wish and you spend about 3 seconds whenever you want to hear again the last character. This book is not like the one you would find in a formal chinese class, it has no pictures with dialogs and to be honest it is a bit abstract, if you are a good self student then this book is really helpful in learning.
On the good side this book has traditional and simplified forms, the CD shows you how to write the characters and also a has a nice explanation of how many of the characters came to be that REALLY helps to remember them. Also the exercises section of the book is thorough (only with the written chars.) and you know the best way to learn is to practice; I was forgetting, the selection of the characters to learn is very good, you learn popupar characters that let you start recognizing them wherever you read real soon!. My recommendation is to buy two books, not just one, no matter how good people say they are you are better with two sources of information. This book is strong in reading and writing and getting the "idea" of the characters so you should get another that is strong in developing your hearing and speaking abilities.
a good independent start for my 8 year old.......2006-05-25
I purchased this for my 8-year old son because we couldn't accommodate his request to attend Chinese classes in around his school/sports/piano schedules. He "loves it" and I'm relieved that he can progress at his own pace, as he has time, without me hovering. . . with two even littler ones, I can't always afford to do that!
Besides the benefit of enabling his self-study (cd is easily navigatable by a child and the pinyin intuitive) this system works for us because I want my son to learn both the traditional and simplified characters. However, I must admit that I have always planned to supplement his learning myself, especially in the area of pronounciation. (I both speak Mandarin Chinese with my family and studied it (Yale method) and Cantonese in college).
Looks like the price has gone up from the $26+ I spent, but it definitely fit the bill for our family.
Ten stars! An unique and easy way to write and read in chinese!.......2006-05-21
In my opinion this audiobook deserves 10 stars. If you are really interested in learning to write and read mandarin buy this tutorial in the first place .
Dr Chang has developed an amazing and effective way to make it easier to write the chinese characters. An added bonus is that the software also teaches you how to pronounce the words and best of all, the words are built into sentences with a preliminary introduction of grammar.
In few words: you can learn the basics of mandarin by your own and paying just what a teacher charges you for an hour.
Let me recommend also the other book published by Dr Chang: "Knocking at the Gate of Life". It is an encyclopedia of the chinese healing exercises and in it you will find all kind of exercises with significant therapeutic value.
