Book Description
No arms maker in history has captured the imagination in the way Winchester has: rifles, shotguns, and ammunition famous the world over for craftsmanship, design capability and performance, historical tradition, and sheer romance. And it is the Winchester that is known as "the gun that won the West."
Now, in celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Winchester marque, R. L. Wilson -- Americas most distinguished writer and expert in the firearms field -- has produced the definitive and official history of Winchester arms and ammunition. Valuable production tables are presented, in addition to a spectacular tribute, in text and photographs, of the full spectrum of products, first introduced in 1849.
Designed companion volume to the best-selling Colt: An American Legend, Winchester matches that award-winning work with a fresh and breathtaking look at Americas most renowned and respected maker of long guns and cartridges. Every collector and enthusiast will delight in its broad appeal, with over 300 photographs in full color and more than 165 in black and white. Winchester: An American Legend pictures and describes virtually every model ever made from the prototype rifles by Hunt and Jennings, to the Volcanics and Henrys, through the full range of lever-action post-Civil War rifles, into the myriad of single-shot, pump, semiautomatic, and bolt actions. Major models, such as the famed 1873 rifle, the Model 12 and 21 shotguns, and the Model 70 bolt-action sporting rifle, are all given lavish attention in text and pictures. Moreover, for the first time in any major firearms book, pictorial and textual material on Winchester's wide range of ammunition) is presented.
The hundreds of Winchester firearms pictured range from standard models for service or sport use, as well as for target-shooting and plinking, to the most elaborate of presentations -exquisite gold-inlaid and engraved arms (some by Tiffany & Co.) with historical pedigrees of the elite and famous. Here are guns of President Abraham Lincoln, stagecoach king Ben Holladay, markswoman Annie Oakley, John Wayne, and the keenest of all Winchester enthusiasts, ranchman and U.S. president Theodore Roosevelt Winchester's contributions to the two world wars, Korea, and Vietnam are also detailed, including the development of the M1 carbine's basic design configuration in the amazing time of thirteen days. The contributions of gun designers B. Tyler Henry, John Browning, T. C. Johnson, and Marshall Carbine Williams are recognized as are the artistic achievements of such gifted engravers as Gustave Young, L. D. Nimschke, the Ulrich family, and the dean of contemporary artisans, Alvin A. White. Several beautiful guns from the Winchester Custom Shop are featured in full color.
The books large format presents many of the firearms in exquisite close-ups, accompanied by substantial details of history, development, and significance. Variations within model groups are given ample attention, and the books organization gives an unequaled overview of nearly a century and a half of Winchester achievement A unique, comprehensive table in the appendix gives serial numbers and related production data previously unavailable in any one source.
The most lavish work ever produced on American long arms, Winchester: An American Legend has been published with the full cooperation of the Winchester Division of the Olin Corporation, as well as Winchester licensee, the U.S. Repeating Arms Company.

winchester/an american legend.......2007-05-09
the next best thing to owning a winchester rifle itself.
excellent in every respect and well recommended.
Wow...A Great Coffee Table Book for Any Firearms History Buff.......2005-12-28
Just the pictures in this huge volume are enough to make it worth thumbing through, but the written information is tremendous and the author manages to cover all connections to Winchesters' Fathers, including John M Browning, my personal hero (other than my Father, Uncle, Grandfather and all other veterans of WWII and Korea). Probably not all the information on Winchester firearms and ammo history but all that I can absorb and still have a social life.
Eye Candy.......2001-04-16
Beautiful to look at. Not heavy in the way of company or technical history, but what a great coffee table book. Costly - if you can find it - but wow!
Another winner from R.L. Wilson.......2000-06-08
R.L. Wilson, who wrote this book, also wrote one called 'Colt, an American Legend.' Both books are exquisite, coffee table size--eight and a half inches by eleven inches (landscape)--and each are over 400 pages, almost every page filled with extremely high quality color photographs.
R.L. Wilson, in addition to being a collector and well-known author in the firearms field, is a historical consultant to Colt's Firearms Division.
The subtitle on the first page says, "The official history of Winchester firearms and ammunition from 1849 to the present," which pretty much covers the entire history of the Winchester Firearms Company (now known as U.S. Repeating Arms, since a bankruptcy and change of ownership.)
If you are a Winchester aficionado, or just a Western history buff, with an interest in "The Gun That Won the West," this is a book you will want in your library.
It is one of my favorite books. It will probably be one of yours, also.

Spectacular photos of America's finest collectable firearms.......1999-02-09
For those who do not own an 1866 Winchester or its predesessor, the Henry, this book comes as close to putting one in your hands as paper and print can. The cool of blued steel and the balance in a fine walnut stock are to be felt on every page. This book is an emblem for the art of still life photography today and for printers' skills. The images are stunning throughout. And pread after spread of exceptional Winchesters from collections around the world confirm that innovation and fine craft make collectables, whether from industry or the fine art studio. The text is useful but leaves one wanting more detail. For the beginner or aspiring collector, for example, a clearer way of differentiating one model and the next would be useful.

The Winchester Single-Shot.......2001-07-18
John Campbell is to the Winchester Single-Shots as Frank Sellers is to the Sharps. This book, and its Volume II, are outstanding books about John Browning's first gun. It covers EVERYTHING you will ever want to know about this rifle, and then some. It is a must for anyone interested in the history of John Browning, Winchester and the famous Model 1885 Single-Shot Rifle. The book is FULL of pictures, diagrams and information about the 1885, including every modification and improvement this rifle went through during its long years in production. It also gives unbelievable details about every customized option or version that the rifle was ever made into. So if you are interested in the Winchester Single-Shot and its history, this book is the one, of two, to read.
The best-done book on a specific model of rifle I've read..........1999-12-26
This book has it all for the 1885 enthusiast, as well as for anyone who has an interest in John Browning, Winchester Repeating Arms, single shot rifles, and/or the beginnings of the modern gun industry here in America. Highly readable, with plenty of facts, figures, and illustrations. Well-edited, and excellent graphic presentation. A beautifully written, edited, and executed book, and one that you will read several times for the sheer enjoyment.
The quality of this book is a standard to which all others of its genre should be written to, but unfortunately too often aren't. I salute the author for a job truly well-done, and I unreservedly recommend this title to anyone who has even a remote interest in the subject matter; the cost of the book is money well-spent. The book is that good.

recommended.......2000-06-11
Canfields well researched book covers all official Winchester longarms in US military service. It is a worthy addition to his other books about US martial arms but is definitly not the bible on this matter. Each Gun would have been worth a own book on itself as he did with the companion titles: "US Combat Shotguns" and "The M1 Garand and the M1 Carbine" Anyway, if you start a collection of Winchester martial arms, or if you are generally interested what Winchester Arms Company supplied to the US forces: this print is the best you can get.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful reference!.......2003-04-17
This is the review of Robert C. Renneberg's book The Winchester Model 94: The First 100 Years" that I wrote for Bullet 'N Press in December 2002.
In production for over one hundred years, and with over seven and one half million of these rifles produced so far, there isn't any question that the most popular deer rifle in America is the Winchester Model 1894, and that it has held that favorite spot for quite some time.
The author begins with a concise, accurate history of this timeless lever action that starts with it's designer John Moses Browning and carries right up through the post 1964 models, the commemoratives and the latest angle eject 94's. Every aspect of the 1894 is covered; engineering changes, alterations, finishes, calibers and wood, often in great detail. The components, and variations thereof, are graphically presented with very clear close-up black and white photography. Collectors love it when information is offered to them in such a way that it quickly answers all their questions. So often I have been asked "Can you show me what to look for with such and such a detail, so I will know what I am buying?". This is that book for the Winchester 1894, it answers questions quickly and it shows you what and where.
Fanciers of the Winchester Model 1894 will be absolutely delighted with what is in this book for it truly gives you "everything you ever wanted to know about the 1894 Winchester", as well as covering a lot of questions you probably wouldn't have thought to ask. I also enjoyed seeing the excerpts from early 20th century Winchester salesman's catalogs, where for instance, a standard 38-55 caliber carbine could be had for the hefty sum of $17.50!
This reviewer was very impressed with the large amount of well presented information and the attention that is given to accurate photographic illustration. The book was a joy to read and I would highly recommend it for the library of anyone who collects or who simply enjoys Winchester's wonderful Model 1894.
Collector Resource Book.......2002-08-30
I have read a number of books on Winchester Firearms. I especially liked this one. Anyone who reads this book will learn something new.
Things I picked up.
Until now Winchester never produced a factory 410 guage lever action shotgun.
Half Octagon/ Half Round Carbines are very rare. Take a look
at the Lone Star Commemorative.
Outstanding reference work.......1999-01-28
Of all the Winchester reference books and there are many, this is by far the most informative. Logically arranged to take the reader smoothly through the myriad variations found in this model and featuring great photography, excellent captioning and none of those usless "filler" pages so often found in books of this type, you will quickly find that every page is a treat. Highly recommended for all Winchester fans; essential for the serious Model 1894/94 collector.
An extremely comprehensive collector's reference work........1998-10-15
This reference work was obviously researched and assembled by an avid fan of the subject. Mr. Renneberg takes the reader through a logical and orderly journey describing the myriad variations of the Winchester Model 94 in amazingly infinite detail; a journey that should be taken by any serious collector of this model. While retaining the literary demeanor of a true reference work, the easy-reading style of Mr. Renneberg's prose make the book enjoyable and entertaining. If you are in any way a fan of Winchester's most successful product, you will be unable to put this book down. Fine photographs and descriptive captioning highlight the exceptionally informative text. The very best of it's kind.

Customer Reviews:
GREAT BOOK!!!.......2004-11-16
I am big fan of guns namely the winchester. This is a great book. It explains how specific models and series of guns work, as well as the history behind the company and the manufacturing of the weapons. Mainly the book focuses on the specs of each arm. The type of gun, magazine, chamber, stock, sights, receiver, barrel, weight etc. Includes great pictures, and extra historical data on comemorative models. A great book to have to teach yourself and your children about history's guns, as well as have a record of the many great guns our contry was founded and build on.
Too Little For Too Many.......2000-06-16
While an interesting beginning for a novice collector the author spans too great a time period to adequately cover any series of Winchester firearms. Winchester collectors are quite attracted to styles or types of firearms. This book barely answers even the most rudimentary of questions and as such is an overall disappointment. Secondly, the book would be greatly enhanced by more detailed and clear photography. This would assist the new collector in appreciating the marvel of these firearms - while providing a much better overview for future study.
Book Description
Never before has a more comprehensive and accurate history

Using corporate records obtained directly from Winchester,

not documented in any other Winchester source.

Wow........1999-12-11
This book is simply one of the best sources for accurate Winchester information I have ever read. The author himself is a wonderful source for knowledge but he also utilizes a number of reliable sources. If you are looking for history on Winchester Repeating Arms Co. This is the Book. If you are looking to find information on specific Winchester guns this book is a great start. The author also recommends additional titles for specific models of Winchester guns
