Great product, I bought these as a graduation gift for out pre-k who were moving up into the elementary class.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for 7 year old boy........2005-09-02

I wanted a leather bound Bible for my 7 year old boy that wasn't too childish, but that had large print. He always balks at even a 10pt. font size. It also had to be the NIRV translation. Not too picky, huh? This was the perfect fit. There are 10 or 15 full page pictures spread throughout the Bible, but that is about it. I was glad that this Bible was free from those annoying cartoony devotions that kids never read anyway. He is not embarrassed to carry it around because it has a plain navy blue cover, no obnoxious cartoons.

I am not through with the entire book yet, but whatever i have red till now is really well written. All features - desktop and admin are well explained with examples and screen shots. Notes at the end of items provide special remarks which are very useful as well.

A very helpful book for beginners as well as advanced users.

Oracle Discoverer is a complex tool and much more than a single understanding of the functionality is required to use it effectively for business intelligence.

Armstrong-Smith has achieved this goal in a pragmatic book that not only shows the "how" but the "why", with simple illustrative examples from real-world systems.

Perhaps the greatest book by one of our greatest historians, The Discoverers is a volume of sweeping range and majestic interpretation. To call it a history of science is an understatement; this is the story of how humankind has come to know the world, however incompletely ("the eternal mystery of the world," Einstein once said, "is its comprehensibility"). Daniel J. Boorstin first describes the liberating concept of time--"the first grand discovery"--and continues through the age of exploration and the advent of the natural and social sciences. The approach is idiosyncratic, with Boorstin lingering over particular figures and accomplishments rather than rushing on to the next set of names and dates. It's also primarily Western, although Boorstin does ask (and answer) several interesting questions: Why didn't the Chinese "discover" Europe and America? Why didn't the Arabs circumnavigate the planet? His thesis about discovery ultimately turns on what he calls "illusions of knowledge." If we think we know something, then we face an obstacle to innovation. The great discoverers, Boorstin shows, dispel the illusions and reveal something new about the world.

Although The Discoverers easily stands on its own, it is technically the first entry in a trilogy that also includes The Creators and The Seekers. An outstanding book--one of the best works of history to be found anywhere. --John J. Miller

3 out of 5 stars A good read, but some disturbing tendencies.......2007-10-14

The Discoverers is a facinating book, and tackles a very big topic: in effect, the history of knowledge of our world. The book is very readable, and Boorstin uses generally conversational, rather than pedantic, language.

All that being said, I was somewhat disappointed by Boorstin's constant portrayal of the Western Church as perhaps the single greatest obstacle to the advancement of knowledge. [Disclosure: I am a devout Catholic who has some familiarity with both the beauties and flaws of the Church.] While it is easy to play to common understandings -- and perhaps comfortable bigotries -- I would expect more from a scholar of Boorstin's reputation.

Boorstin never makes clear whether the Church, as he sees it, promoted ignorance deliberately as some nefarious program (in the spirit of the tendencious The Di Vinci Code) or more innocently out of its own intellectual limitations. In any case, he proceeds to neglect some obvious facts that run counter to his theme, the most notable of which is that the medieval church more than any other institution sponsored and guided the development of the university. This is not the sort of thing one would expect from an instution seeking to thwart learning.

There is a long list of church clerics who were literally "founding fathers" of scientific disciplines ranging from genetics and atomic theory to geology and seismology. None of these is even hinted at in The Discovers (although Boorstin finds room, oddly, for such "discoveries" as Keynesian economic theory). Most fundamentally, Boorstin never seems to recognize the peculiarity of his position -- that Western culture, so thoroughly and inextricably linked to a benighted Christian church, could produce the wide array of discoverers documented in his text.

4 out of 5 stars An Old Fashioned Idea.........2007-09-25

Admittedly, while I'm jumping into the fold a tad late, I think my review might benefit some who haven't yet read this glorious compendium of information. Yes, like one reviewer says, it is an encyclopedic collection of essential and non-essential information -- and at times a verbose one -- about life, history, culture and civilization. But in this wired age of getting information on the fly -- off a talking head on a wide screen, squinting at a one-inch-square cellphone web page, or listening to a scratchy bluetooth connection -- it is refreshing to learn of vast ideas and minutia and everything in between by turning 600+ pages of a heavy book.

3 out of 5 stars A bold project, dragged down by showiness.......2007-06-25

I must join the minority report. I've owned this book for years, find it a remarkable accomplishment full of fascinating facts and biographies... but halfway through trying to finish Book III, Section 3, Part 5.1.B for the 32nd time, I'm throwing in the towel. There's something about Boorstin's writing style that puts me to sleep, and I think it's what an earlier reviewer noted -- a certain smugness, a certain showiness that needlessly complicates the story he's trying to tell.

Certainly, there's a bit of audacity and vainglorious ambition to anyone who would attempt what Boorstin does here, and I don't begrudge him that ambition. He's clearly an incredibly brilliant man.

But, jeez, does he have to make sure you know it.

I just can't shake the sense that the author is more interested in showing off just how much he's read and retained, the brilliant scope of his knowledge, than in making that knowledge accessible to the reader. For example, as noted by others, Boorstin will use an obscure term for dozens of pages before he finally gets around to defining it. While possibly not intended, the effect on this reader is of being intellectually bullied. One is pummeled by so many names, terms and Latin phrases, that the reader must just swallow Boorstin's interpretations, because clearly the man knows more than any of us mere mortals could ever aspire towards.

So much fascinating history is here, but I have to find a source that doesn't cause my eyes to glaze over as The Discovers does.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book with many answers to life itself. :).......2007-06-14

Title says it all.
This is a super book for anyone having questions in life.
Super bathroom reader, and you don't have to read cover to cover to get anything out of it.

Even though I'm not a big history buff, I find the book facinating...

5 out of 5 stars A history of knowledge and understading.......2007-03-19

Like most readers, I thoroughly enjoyed Boorstin's "The Discoverers" - all 684 pages. At the same time, I'll admit to understanding somewhat, and having been amused by, the one negative review below. Without diminishing the book in any way, it's a bit of a cross between a history book and an encyclopedia. It is a history of human knowledge. As such, a wide range of critical areas of human endeavor and inquiry are treated in detail - clocks and calendars, cartography and discovery, astronomy, medicine, human physiology, mathematics, scientific method, the study of plants, animals and evolution, language and communication, and the study of history itself. In tracing human understanding of these and other subjects, Boorstin introduces the reader to critical times, places, circumstances and personalities. Thus, while focusing on specific topics that are very interesting in and of themselves, the book also provides the reader with a deeper, richer and more colorful understanding of world history generally. I liked the book so much, in fact, I bought another copy to give away.

Psychologist Lucy Jo Palladino claims that 20 percent of children have what she calls the Edison trait: "dazzling intelligence, an active imagination, a free-spirited approach to life, and the ability to drive everyone around them crazy." She named the trait after Thomas Edison, who flunked out of school despite his obvious brilliance. Palladino says that Edison-trait children think divergently, while the routines and structure of schools are more geared toward convergent thinking, or focusing on one idea at a time. The incompatible school environment, she says, usually leads divergent-thinking children to act out, receive poor grades, and often be labeled as strong-willed and disruptive.

These symptoms may sound similar to those of ADD, but Palladino says that's an overused term often mistakenly applied to Edison-trait children. "In most cases," she says, "ADD behavior patterns are comparable to but more extreme than the typical patterns of an Edison-trait child who does not have ADD." A diagnosis of ADD does not take into consideration factors such as "intelligence, perceptiveness, sensitivity, creativity, and wit."

With many references to scientific studies, Palladino helps you decide whether your child is one of the three types of Edison-trait children: dreamer, discoverer, or dynamo. She also gives pointed, practical advice regarding such controversial topics as diet, neurofeedback treatment, and psychological testing. For frustrated parents and educators, Dreamers, Discoverers, and Dynamos will be a rich source of both help and hope.

Book Description

Does your imaginative, computer-proficient daughter tune out in the classroom? Does your spirited son become headstrong and aggressive when faced with the simplest decisions? Does your bold, energetic child have trouble focusing on basic tasks?

Millions of children--one in five--have what psychologist Lucy Jo Palladino, Ph.D., calls the Edison trait: dazzling intelligence, an active imagination, a free-spirited approach to life, and the ability to drive everyone around them crazy. Named after Thomas Edison--who flunked out of school only to harness his talents and give the world some of its finest inventions--the Edison trait is on the rise in our younger generation.

The heart of the issue is that they think divergently--they overflow with many ideas--while schools, organized activities, and routines of daily living reward convergent thinking, which focuses on one idea at a time. Drawing on examples from more than two decades of private practice, Dr. Palladino helps us cope with this challenging aspect of our child's intellect and personality, explaining in clear terms:

- The three Edison-trait personality types: dreamers, discoverers, and dynamos
- The eight steps to understanding, reaching, and teaching your Edison-trait child
- The connection between the Edison trait and A.D.D.

3 out of 5 stars "D" for disappointed.......2007-09-27

While the basic premise is good, the book feels thin--as if it should have been a magazine article. Too general and it seems as her examples are not well supported. Better to read a Mel Levine book or Driven to Distraction

5 out of 5 stars Finally positive news .......2007-05-08

This is a wonderful book. After hearing about all the things my son wouldn't be able to do, and how he'll never fit in etc. Here's a book that takes those "bad" traits and shows me how he can be sucessful with them. This book gave me hope for my son who was diagnosed very late (age 9) with Aspergers Autism. I now have a powerful ally to take to my family and his school that is based on hope and not on negitivity. It's changed my life and is changing the life of my son. How cool is that!!!

5 out of 5 stars Interesting book!.......2006-08-08

This book first lists traits that may or may not fit your child, but are considered to be part of "The Edison Trait". Then, they give ideas on how to deal with children who think differently than many other children.

5 out of 5 stars This book was formerly titled _The Edison Trait_.......2005-01-28

We have been searching for _The Edison Trait_ online today since the copy we are using is due back at the library. We found it online at around $50 a copy to buy it used! Fortunately we discovered that it has been retitled and is now sold as _Dreamers, Discoverers and Dynamos : How to Help the Child Who Is Bright, Bored and Having Problems in School_.

My wife has kept the library copy until it is overdue and has a hold on it. This is the most excited I have seen her about a book since we were married. She has found some very practical tools to help us with our children.

3 out of 5 stars Good reference but not a cure-all.......2004-04-12

Despite the lofty praise heaped on Dreamers, Discoverers, and Dynamos, this book is neither a cure-all or all-in-once resource. On the other hand, Dr. Pallandino has rounded up plenty of good information and strategies for motivating children to complete tasks, pay attention in school, and essentially get their heads out of the clouds.

Part of the problem here is that this book essentially categorizes children as either having an Edison-trait---that is being very smart, imaginative, and free-spirited---or not. While I think most parents would like to associate their children with Edison, the roles of self-discipline, focus, and, extra effort in improving learning and performance are downplayed. And most parents already know that those ingredients have to be part of the mix.

But there are enough positives here to make this book worth a read. Learning how to teach children how to break down tasks into components, striving to improve one's patience, working as a team, and remembering to reward achievements are all good things. Although such advice is certainly valuable for helping any child, not just those who have this Edison-trait.

The dichotomy between convergent thinking and divergent thinking, a core idea in this book, seems a bit artificial and a bit too clear-cut to me (true, I'm only a parent and former teacher) but I find most real-life issues a bit more blurry. But this model does illustrate to a good degree the serious "dumbing down" problems inherent in our education systems.

The sections on therapy, ADD, and professional diagnosis were the least intriguing and least inspiring.

Realizing that there are different ways to approach a situation has its value, and the author's greatest success here is reminding readers to step back and consider the options.

I teach Sunday School at church. When the kids saw the NIV Discoverer's Bible, they didn't hesitate to open it, and even glanced through it without me asking them to.

It is very kid friendly. It's not intimadating as the adult pew Bibles for the kids.

3 out of 5 stars Great for kids but needs some improvements.......2005-08-08

This is a good bible for children. The font is large enough for easy reading, there are pictures and the front cover is colourful making ita very attractive bible. My daughter truly enjoys her first bible.
Couple shortfalls are that the words of Christ are not in red (which would be good for the reader to visually identify Christ's words) and the verses should be separated and not all joined together as is the case in the adult version of this bible.

5 out of 5 stars It is exactly what I wanted!.......2005-03-04

A Real and complete bible. The print is large enough for my 2nd grader to read without much struggling. Some more difficult words are simplified but the text remains whole. It is suitable for my 5th grader as well. The quality is really good. This is going to last a long time.A Great Buy!!

3 out of 5 stars It's not what I thought it would be.......2004-04-01

When I ordered this bible for my son I was expecting something more similar to a study bible. I thought there would be facts or tips or something to make bible study fun. The description isn't really clear on what the full color tip inserts are, or whatever they call them. They ended up being pictures. I was so disappointed. I can buy a children's bible for a lot cheaper if all I'm looking for is a couple pictures thrown in here and there.

The harrowing survival story of English explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton and the ill-fated Endurance has intrigued people since the 1914 expedition--spurring astounding books such as Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage and The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition. As Shackleton and 27 sailors attempted to cross the frozen Antarctic continent from one side to the other, they were trapped in an ice pack, lost their ship to the icy depths, survived an Antarctic winter, escaped attacks from sea lions, and traversed 600 treacherous miles to the uninhabited Elephant Island. Leaving 22 men behind, Shackleton and five others sailed 800 miles across the southern Atlantic Ocean in a 20-foot open boat to tiny South George Island, where they hiked across unmapped mountains to a whaling station. In 1916, 19 months after the Endurance became icebound, Shackleton led a rescue party back to retrieve his men. Remarkably, every crew member survived.

Jennifer Armstrong, the award-winning author of Black-Eyed Susan and The Dreams of Mairhe Mehan, brings the unbelievable journey to life with delicious details: how a handsome young stowaway was discovered too late to cast him off; how the ship itself would become frost-white, looking like "another species of sparkling white iceberg as it nosed its way through the pack;" and how the ice-pack-dwelling Emperor penguins seemed to enjoy the banjo music of crew member Leonard Hussey. The true-to-life story is as thrilling as they come, and Armstrong's lively, crystal-clear writing style is just as compelling. More than 40 photographs of the expedition populate this inspiring nonfiction adventure story that young readers will devour from cover to cover. (Ages 10 to 14) --Karin Snelson

Book Description

The harrowing story of the ill-fated Endurance, now in paperback.

In August 1914, Ernest Shackleton and 27 men sailed from England in an attempt to become the first team of explorers to cross Antarctica from one side to the other. Five months later and still 100 miles from land, their ship, Endurance, became trapped in ice. The expedition survived another five months camping on ice floes, followed by a perilous journey through stormy seas to remote and unvisited Elephant Island. In a dramatic climax to this amazing survival story, Shackleton and five others navigated 800 miles of treacherous open ocean in a 20-foot boat to fetch a rescue ship.

Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World vividly re-creates one of the most extraordinary adventure stories in history. Jennifer Armstrong narrates this unbelievable story with vigor, an eye for detail, and an appreciation of the marvelous leadership of Shackleton, who brought home every one of his men alive.

5 out of 5 stars A gripping tale.......2007-07-03

If you ever think your job is hard, or you feel like complaining about the traffic or the weather or that your Internet connection is slow, just stop. Stop and consider the ordeal and misery suffered by the 28 men on Ernest Shackleton's 1914-16 Antartic expedition.

Nothing will seem so bad then.

The Shackleton expedition is probably the greatest survival story ever. After their ship became trapped in ice, the men were forced to spend a winter aboard in the cold and darkness of Antarctic winter. Then their ship was crushed, and they were forced to drag their belongings across the ice by foot. Then things got bad.

They tried to pull their lifeboats across the ice to open water, but found it impossible. Food supplies dwindled and they survived by eating penguins and seals. The ice floes split beneath their feet. They were constantly cold and wet. Then things got worse.

They finally reached the ocean and survived a torcherous six-day ride across raging seas, with little sleep or drinking water, reaching a barren island with their throats parched with thirst. One man had frostbite on his toes. Then, six of them took an even more impossible voyage, a 16-day sail to reach help on South Georgia Island. But even when they got there, they weren't done -- they still had to climb a mountain range.

The Shackleton story has been told many times. This version, by Jennifer Armstrong, is aimed at youth readers, but anyone would enjoy it. The story here is enhanced by nice use of pictures. If you like this, you can move on to the longer, more detailed, books on the expedition.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, kid-friendly account of the Shackleton expedition........2007-01-10

This is the book that first got me interested in the misadventures of Shackleton and his crew. And I like to think this is what could get kids interested in a better-than-fiction adventure.

The events of the disaster are tackled in rather a heroic light, which should appeal to children. Besides, Shackleton and his men were certainly heroes. The book covers all the basics in an easy-but-remarkably-written expository text. Yet it reads almost like a story in parts, with lots of room for factoids, and that should attract both types of kids--those looking for a good story and those looking for facts. It's a great balance, and allows for a surprisingly emotional view of the situation.

The format is wonderful, too-- who doesn't like to look at pictures? It's almost remisiscent of a magazine, which adds to the appeal.

Great information, a great survival adventures, and perfectly packaged.

Wonderful, wonderful job.

The years of disaster

The book shipwreck at the bottom of the world was a very interesting book the book had a good sense of the true story. When the book started off it showed that there was stuff like that, that actually happened. This book was a if not the best book i have read.
The book was very good and I highly recommend it for good readers
When you read it, it seems like it is very hard to follow but it is not hard once it gets going.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!.......2006-07-10

This book exposes the hardships and courage needed to endure two years in the Antarctic with none of the technological advances that we have available to us now. The author does an excellent job of introducing us to the captain and some of the crew. She draws us into their world as their adventure slowly changed into a heroic tale of survival. I used it with sixth graders and found lots of material to tie it into the California Language Arts Standards. Great book for adults and middle and upper school students.

5 out of 5 stars Pictures make this story come alive!.......2006-02-25

This amazing story was made all the better for me with the pictures that were included in the book. I read parts of this book to sixth graders, and they loved seeing the pictures as I read the text. The straight forward story was great to read too. I've read other accounts of this adventure and thoroughly enjoyed this one the most.

    Book Description

This dramatic, suspenseful narrative reads like an adventure story-but it is true. In 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton and a twenty-seven-man crew set off on an expedition to reach and cross Antarctica. Just a month and a half into the voyage, their ship, the Endurance, was caught fast in heavy pack ice. The men had no radio contact, and no one knew where they were or even that they were in trouble. None of them should have survived the ordeal that followed-unstable ice floes, treacherous waters, freezing temperatures, and starvation. Only the extraordinary leadership, courage, and strength of Shackleton brought the whole team safely through. Elizabeth Cody Kimmel's clear, compelling text is illustrated with photographs, taken and carefully preserved by the ship's photographer, that record the stark condition and the day-to-day activities of the men. Hand-drawn maps that show the extraordinary route of the Endurance and her crew. Bibliography, index.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Study of Polar Hardships.......2007-09-01

My homeschooled kids LOVED this book. It doesn't have the bright pictures or tongue-in-check narration sported by other juvenile books but the story captured the attention of my 9-, 7-, and 5- year olds. We used this as a springboard into our study of Arctic habitats and polar explorers. I read it aloud over the course of two weeks, chapter by chapter to my younger ones. My oldest couldn't wait and snuck off to devour it during quiet time. He was so inspired by the details of their adventure and the amazing black and white photographs, he decided to go on his own "virtual" expedition which has spun off into a huge research project. It starts a tad dry but it doesn't take long before the intrigue of a real life stowaway, midnight dog races, and an incredible story of survival captures everyone's interest. A great tool to emphasize power of leadership, ingenuity, perseverance, and hope. I would HIGHLY recommend this as the main stay of a polar unit, which can then be supplemented with the more accessible juvenile books.

5 out of 5 stars Ice Story: Shakleton's Lost Expedition.......1999-12-15

The true story with lots of original photographs of Sir Ernest Shakleton's unsuccessful Antarctic Expedition. The hardships they faced were incredible, yet Shackleton was a true commander. He kept his men together in mind and body. Excellent adventure book and recommend it for grades 3 through 11th. Also recommended reading for teachers and parents.

    5 out of 5 stars Titanic.......2006-03-23

Do you like old ships? Well, I know the right one for you. It is the Titanic. It is about a ship that hit an ice berg and went down. So go under water with Dr.Robert Ballard and explore the Titanic. Good Luck! This book is recommended for 8 and up.

4 out of 5 stars A Sad, Yet True Look at the TITANIC .......2006-02-12

Exploring the TITANIC is a very profound read. Robert Ballard (author of this book) is an avid diver, with the dream of finding and exploring the TITANIC. He joined a bunch of French explorers, and traveled far into the deep of the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland where the TITANIC sank in 1912. Ballard used Argo (an advanced water-safe camera) to take pictures of the TITANIC until he found that he could not use Argo anymore because the rough waves were pounding against it. Minute after minute, hour after hour, the Knorr (the submarine Ballard was traveling on) floated in a sea of darkness because the only light they had was the light from Argo. About ten hours went by before Ballard decided to use Angus. Angus was an older camera that Ballard had used in previous explorations. In an hour or two, Ballard had found the TITANIC. Somehow he was not satisfied. He wanted to take clear pictures but did not know how to get them with the technology that he had with him. He pondered this for days. He knew that he was about 13 feet above the TITANIC. Then it came to him that he just needed to go down 13 feet more to get his pictures. Ballard convinced the Captain to go down the 13 feet. When they reached their target, they were able to get their pictures.
Ballard's dream was still not fulfilled because he had not yet explored the TITANIC. About a year later, Ballard and two other divers went underwater to explore the TITANIC. They had traveled down four or five times to complete their mission of exploring the TITANIC. Ballard's dream was fulfilled.
I would recommend this book to any reader that is NOT sensitive. This book told about people on the TITANIC who died. I think the author told us too much about people's lives and made us care about them too much. It was sad when you found out the person died. If they weren't killed, then one of the person's loved ones was killed. For example, Jack Thayer was talked about very much in the beginning. I became fond of him because the author gave so much detail about his life. When Ballard told us that Thayer had survived the crash, he did not stop there. He went on to tell us that Jack's father and his friend did not make it. This made me very emotional. If you would like to learn about Robert Ballard and his exploration of the TITANIC, then by all means, read this book. If the sad parts about the people who died bother you, just skip those pages and you'll still learn a lot about exploring the TITANIC.

4 out of 5 stars If you like reading about the Titanic you will love this book!!.......2005-07-10

It's a true story about the Titanic and what things Robert Ballard and his team find in the Titanic.

    5 out of 5 stars A fabulous read.......2001-12-21

I first read this book almost 15 years ago, at age 5 : I loved it, and read it uncountable times. Today it is still just as fascinating. Beautifully illustrated and clearly written, it was the first of many Ballard books that I read. I would also recommend the Discovery of the Bismark and The Wreck of the Isis, just as interesting but less well known. A great way to start reading about the great ships of the past.

5 out of 5 stars Read about the Hole thing from the Beginning.......2001-11-22

Goes behind the Titanic. Why did the Titanic sank, why it was built, how they came up with the name Titanic etc. It has everything you need to know about the Titanic. Even has real actual pictures taken of the Titanic in the water and above.
