Sit at the foot of a native elder and listen as great wisdom of days long past is passed down. In The Four Agreements shamanic teacher and healer Don Miguel Ruiz exposes self-limiting beliefs and presents a simple yet effective code of personal conduct learned from his Toltec ancestors. Full of grace and simple truth, this handsomely designed book makes a lovely gift for anyone making an elementary change in life, and it reads in a voice that you would expect from an indigenous shaman. The four agreements are these: Be impeccable with your word. Don't take anything personally. Don't make assumptions. Always do your best. It's the how and why one should do these things that make The Four Agreements worth reading and remembering. --P. Randall Cohan
Book Description
In The Four Agreements, don Miguel Ruiz reveals the source of self-limiting agreements that rob people of joy and create needless suffering. Based on ancient Toltec wisdom, the Four Agreements offer a powerful code of conduct that can rapidly transform anyone's life to a new experience of freedom, true happiness, and love. These agreements are deceptively simple: Be impeccable with your word (speak with integrity; say only what you mean); Don't take anything personally (nothing others do is because of you); Don't make assumptions (find the courage to ask questions and express what you really want); Always do your best (and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret). Peter Coyote's resonant reading emphasizes the power in these remarkable tenets.

A good foundation.......2007-10-01
This is a compelling book that provides a straightforward, easy-to-understand methodology for improving one's quality of life. In this work Ruiz first reveals the source of self-limiting beliefs that tend to rob people of joy and create needless suffering. He then recommends a technique for overcoming these beliefs: adopt four new agreements with respect to how they approach the world and conduct their lives.
Is this some new, revolutionary technology for self-improvement? No, the fact is in one way shape or form we've all heard these types of admonitions from other sources in our lives. What Ruiz does well is package them in a novel way and provide practical insights into how we can best apply them. Bottom line, even if you've heard something like this before it never hurts to be reminded about good advice you've received in the past.
PLEASE... Read the 1 star reviews BEFORE you buy this book!.......2007-09-27
I am shocked at all the 5 stars and positive press this book has received. PLEASE, read a few of the 1 star reviews before you purchase this book. Quite often people who rate something with just 1 star are grumpy individuals who just want to argue... not this time. Many writers of the single star reviews are extremely well spoken, very well read and positive minded individuals. They are worth reading! (More so than this book.)
Everyone on this Planet should read this book, it should be a teaching material in Schools.......2007-09-25
The four agreements is not only a book, it is a lifestyle. Most of the wisdom in self helping books i have read thruout the years has mostly washed away, vanished in to the sea of mind few weeks later after i read them. This one is different. It has somekind of power. And it forces you to do the doings not just read about them. This one stayes with you cause you wan't to pick it up over and over again.
Critical information, so powerful it should be taught 7- 12 + college.......2007-09-24
I did not receive any critical information about my role in relationships from any source including school, religious education, parents, or advisor's.
The Four Agreements and the Mastery of Love has now provided this knowledge and it is and will always be a reference source for living the rest of my life
It is so ingrained and with me every day as I work to improve on my relationships with my family, friends, and business relationships. After you listen to the message of the Four Agreements, you will see the need for this information to be made available to your family and friends.
My wish is for this to be a part of the curriculum for the public school systems.

Easy to read, let's see how easy in practise.......2007-09-18
I think we've all seen this stuff before in various incarnations (e.g. Bible - "Do unto others...") but it is a very easy read and the agreements are plain and unambiguous. They are not cluttered with ceremony but come down to principles of values and self context. And like alot of similar readings, the battle or challenge lies in the effort to achieve and not only the achievement itself. I like that it advocates largely a position or development of an inner strength that is personal. All too often, I have noticed some of these personal freedom type writings from authors who present their writings in a stadium type environment and whip the crowd up in a frenzy to create a mob frenzy that attempts to portray the message. That's clearly the domain of some charlatans that we've all seen. I'm looking forward to the challenge involved in implementing these agreements. It won't be easy but most thnigs worthwhile aren't so they say.

Menopause doesn't have to be a dreaded curse of aging during which we can look forward only to hot flashes and whacked-out hormonal mood swings. According to Christiane Northrup, M.D. (Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom), menopause often marks the beginning of a woman's most sexually passionate, creatively inspired, and professionally productive phase of life.
While this may sound like wishful thinking, Northrup backs up her good news with solid medical expertise. As an obstetrician and gynecologist, Northrup has specialized in using a mind-body approach to women's health for decades, which means she doesn't just write about hormones, but also examines how a woman's lifestyle, emotions, and beliefs are affected by menopause. With the right diet, attitude, and perhaps some supplements along the way, women can actually look forward to a resurgence of energy and a revolutionary opportunity for personal growth--one that rivals the hormonally driven period of adolescence in its scope and urgency, she claims. And yes, at just under 500 pages, The Wisdom of Menopause does explain how to have a positive and healthy menopause in concise detail. Northrup has indeed "written the book" on menopause.
It helps that Northrup has been through menopause herself (she vowed she wouldn't write a book on it until she was on the other side). Readers have the sense that they are gleaning advice from a knowledgeable holistic doctor as well as a sage aunt whose life was radically altered by the "change of life" (Northrup divorced at the onset of menopause). After she shares her personal story of "the change," Northrup delves into a significant discussion on how self-sacrifice catches up with women in midlife. Suddenly, hormones are directing women out of the caregiver role and into an inwardly focused assessment of life and its meaning, she explains. Resentments (not hormones) are what spur the notorious surges of anger, as women reexamine the agreements surrounding their relationships with colleagues, friends, and family members.
From here, Northrup guides readers into a thorough section on menopausal hormone changes--a discussion that is scientifically informative, yet entirely accessible. While acknowledging the need for hormone-replacement therapy and the tremendous relief it can provide (helping to alleviate insomnia, hot flashes, and depression), Northrup encourages women to avoid synthetic hormones and instead consider "bioidentical" hormones (such as estradiol, estrone, and estriol). She also devotes an entire chapter to foods and supplements that support hormonal balance. By the way, she says to skip the wild Mexican yam creams: "they certainly don't provide the documented benefits of progesterone." Be warned: some readers may find the advice in Wisdom of Menopause too alternative for their liking. For example, in her discussion on insomnia, one of Northrup's recommendations is to cover the mirror at night, following the ancient Asian design principles of feng shui. (Skeptics will find Northrup's medical assertions carefully cited and footnoted in the rear of her book.)
Northrup gives a solid and practical diet plan that supports hormonal balance while countering the weight gain that so frequently plagues menopausal women ("focus on portion size, not calories," "eat protein at every meal," and cut down on refined and high-carbohydrate foods). Readers can also expect a thorough mind-body discussion in subsequent chapters that cover breast health, bone loss, and cultivating midlife beauty, along with chapters titled "Sex and Menopause: Myths and Reality" and "Creating Pelvic Health and Power."
She concludes with a list of mail-order and online resources, such as retailers for bioidentical hormones, progesterone cream, Chinese herbs, soy products, weight-loss audiocassettes, lubricants, and Kegel weights. Northrup takes a truly comprehensive approach to all the effective treatments of menopausal symptoms so that women can make their own highly informed and wise choices. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
Through her bestselling books, groundbreaking PBS specials, and up-to-the-minute clinical knowledge, Dr. Christiane Northrup has earned a place as one of America’s most trusted medical advisors.
In
The Wisdom of Menopause, she once again challenges convention with this inspiring look at one of the most commonly misunderstood female health issues. The “change” is not simply a collection of physical symptoms to be “fixed,” Dr. Northrup claims, but a mind/body revolution that brings the greatest opportunity for growth since adolescence. The choices a woman makes now–from the quality of her relationships to the quality of her diet–have the power to secure her health and well-being for the rest of her life. Through her personal story and many fascinating case histories, Dr. Northrup shows:
• How menopause jump-starts changes in the brain, issuing a dramatic wake-up call to body, mind, and emotions
• How to ensure the long-term health of breasts, bones, and heart
• How the body adjusts naturally to changing hormones
• Why bestselling drugs like Premarin may not be the best choice
• How to deal with metabolism shifts, weight gain, sexual problems, and appearance issues
• How to negotiate the challenges of “the empty nest” and midlife marriage
And much more.
In a book destined to be a classic, Dr. Northrup shows women how they can make menopause a time of personal empowerment and positive energy–emerging wiser, healthier, and stronger in both mind and body than ever before.

The Best of The Lot.......2007-10-17
I've read three books on the subject and this is far and away the best. Which is not to say the book is perfect. It's not. It's flawed. But compared to the others, which left me cold, this one at least treated the subject matter with a dose of empathy and a smidgen of tact.
This book is not for those followers of traditional medicine who abstain from all thnigs alternative. The book touches on alternative therapies - acupuncture, diet, stress relief, meditation, etc. I found the holistic approach to be most rewarding. BUT IT'S NOT FOR EVERYBODY! You must be open to this stuff. If you're the type of person who only does what your doctor tells you, and doesn't believe in wellness therapy or taking a preventative approach to your health, this isn't the book for you.
I found this book most satisfying. On similar subjects, I also enjoy Suzeanne Somers' books on aging. And, I recently completed the funniest book on aging ever written. Called "Race You To tHe Fountain of Youth" this little nugget made me laugh - repeatedly. Race You to the Fountain of Youth: I'm Not Dead Yet (But parts of me are going fast)
"The Wisdom of Menopause" is great for those who are exhausted from attempting traditional coping methods and want something new and fresh. It generally worked for me.
2 Extraordinary Books for Mid-Lifers.......2007-10-17
I have been educating myself about menopause since I hit 40. This book covers everything I discovered plus gives a spiritual side that medical literature never covers. It is full of excellent practical advice. Dr. Northrup combines traditional medicine with other "medicines" in a nice balance. "THE WISDOM OF MENOPAUSE" and " Understanding: Train of Thought" are life changing books. I can't recommend them too highly!
Great BOOK, would recommend it to everyone.......2007-09-19
I wish I had read this book years sooner. It has given me more insight to being a female than ever. I use it as a resource and recommend it to many women friends and family. I could have been saved a great deal of heart ache had I had it sooner.
Enlightening.......2007-09-15
I have only read the first 100 pages of this 600 page book, but I am finding the information to be very enlightening. At times, I feel as if I am reading my own life. I am in the perimenopause stage, and the way the author relays the changing of her thinking process, and correlates that with the hormonal changes occurring in her body, has really helped me understand the phase of life that I have entered and why I am making so many life changes. I thought I had just made up my mind about some things, but I am beginning to understand that it is really coming from the inside out. This book was recommended to me right on time. I am only 46 and I probably would not have purchased a book on menopause, if it had not been recommended. Any woman, approaching this change, should read this book, because I believe it will help you embrace the change, instead of fear it. I always had a negative impression of the emotions that would emerge, based on negative information that is usually forthcoming, but this is helping me to move forward taking advantage of the natural changes that are occurring. Perhaps I will write my own story, about how this book changed my life. Don't get overwhelmed by the size of the book, it is filled with life changing information that can be digested nugget by nugget.
A must read for Women.......2007-08-13
This insightful book adds clearity to wherever you are in the menopause chapter of your your life. I bought two and sent one to a friend. She called me and said it sounded like the author was writing about her at times.
Book Description
In this fascinating book, New Yorker business columnist James Surowiecki explores a deceptively simple idea: Large groups of people are smarter than an elite few, no matter how brilliant–better at solving problems, fostering innovation, coming to wise decisions, even predicting the future.
With boundless erudition and in delightfully clear prose, Surowiecki ranges across fields as diverse as popular culture, psychology, ant biology, behavioral economics, artificial intelligence, military history, and politics to show how this simple idea offers important lessons for how we live our lives, select our leaders, run our companies, and think about our world.

The Wisdom of Crowds
I
If, years hence, people remember anything about the TV game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, they will probably remember the contestants' panicked phone calls to friends and relatives. Or they may have a faint memory of that short-lived moment when Regis Philbin became a fashion icon for his willingness to wear a dark blue tie with a dark blue shirt. What people probably won't remember is that every week Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? pitted group intelligence against individual intelligence, and that every week, group intelligence won.
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? was a simple show in terms of structure: a contestant was asked multiple-choice questions, which got successively more difficult, and if she answered fifteen questions in a row correctly, she walked away with $1 million. The show's gimmick was that if a contestant got stumped by a question, she could pursue three avenues of assistance. First, she could have two of the four multiple-choice answers removed (so she'd have at least a fifty-fifty shot at the right response). Second, she could place a call to a friend or relative, a person whom, before the show, she had singled out as one of the smartest people she knew, and ask him or her for the answer. And third, she could poll the studio audience, which would immediately cast its votes by computer. Everything we think we know about intelligence suggests that the smart individual would offer the most help. And, in fact, the "experts" did okay, offering the right answer--under pressure--almost 65 percent of the time. But they paled in comparison to the audiences. Those random crowds of people with nothing better to do on a weekday afternoon than sit in a TV studio picked the right answer 91 percent of the time.
Now, the results of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? would never stand up to scientific scrutiny. We don't know how smart the experts were, so we don't know how impressive outperforming them was. And since the experts and the audiences didn't always answer the same questions, it's possible, though not likely, that the audiences were asked easier questions. Even so, it's hard to resist the thought that the success of the Millionaire audience was a modern example of the same phenomenon that Francis Galton caught a glimpse of a century ago.
As it happens, the possibilities of group intelligence, at least when it came to judging questions of fact, were demonstrated by a host of experiments conducted by American sociologists and psychologists between 1920 and the mid-1950s, the heyday of research into group dynamics. Although in general, as we'll see, the bigger the crowd the better, the groups in most of these early
experiments--which for some reason remained relatively unknown outside of academia--were relatively small. Yet they nonetheless performed very well. The Columbia sociologist Hazel Knight kicked things off with a series of studies in the early 1920s, the first of which had the virtue of simplicity. In that study Knight asked the students in her class to estimate the room's temperature, and then took a simple average of the estimates. The group guessed 72.4 degrees, while the actual temperature was 72 degrees. This was not, to be sure, the most auspicious beginning, since classroom temperatures are so stable that it's hard to imagine a class's estimate being too far off base. But in the years that followed, far more convincing evidence emerged, as students and soldiers across America were subjected to a barrage of puzzles, intelligence tests, and word games. The sociologist Kate H. Gordon asked two hundred students to rank items by weight, and found that the group's "estimate" was 94 percent accurate, which was better than all but five of the individual guesses. In another experiment students were asked to look at ten piles of buckshot--each a slightly different size than the

Smart, Interesting and Easy to Read.......2007-09-21
This book was a surprise hit for me. I didn't expect to like it, but ended up loving it so much I just had to have a copy on my shelf. Surowieki is very convincing, in part because he takes such care to bring up alternative arguments and respond to each. He also keeps his focus fairly narrow, so the arguments aren't all over the place. I was especially fascinated by his discussion of experts. We rely on them so heavily these days, but now I know to question their expertise. This book has changed the way that I make decisions and the way I evaluate good decision-making in my elected representatives. I recommend this book to anyone interested in making good decisions. It is a smoothly-written book and you won't have any trouble following the arguments or staying 'into' it.
Don't expect a textbook.......2007-09-19
I really like the Wisdom of Crowds because Surowiecki succeeds in explaining complicated and sophisticated ideas in ways that educated people can not only grasp but also incorporate into their own thinking. This is quite an achievement, one that critics of the book have overlooked. This topic has not been open until now to such a wide audience.
Surowiecki never shies from even difficult and abstract statistical concepts. He draws liberally upon academic journals and scholarly books, writing in a style that is at once journalistic and educated.
Yet, Surowiecki never talks down to his reader. Instead he invites the reader to accompany him through an arcane (and dimly lit) maze of statistical practice as it has been developed and utilized for decades by social scientists and economists. The reader is rewarded again and again because Surowiecki points to a partially hidden jewel, holds it up for examination, hands it to the reader and then leaves it in plain sight (often for reference later in the book).
Thus, this book is a remarkable example, a model, for readers (and writers) who wish to bridge the gaps between educated professionals.
My criticism is along different lines. In this extremely visual era, the editors could have widened the audience for the Wisdom of Crowds much further if suitable images could have been commissioned to throw additional light on Surowiecki's prose. But, paper and ink are so much more expensive than artists these days, one can understand the limitations and constraints Doubleday (Random House) were under. On the other hand, why not put up a web site?
Crowds Oh Wisdom.......2007-09-19
Good book and I thought the pace moved along extremely well. There are some significant things in the book that are a bit dated, but overall this is a very interesting book. I also recommend "Beyond Buzz: The Next Generation of Word-of-Mouth Marketing" by Lois Kelly published 2007 to couple with this book. Beyond Buzz: The Next Generation of Word-of-Mouth Marketing
Food for thought.......2007-08-21
I found this book full of sweeping claims, generalizations and is confusing in its presentation. However it made me think. Overall the writer is saying that people independently working on a problem can in a fair vote be more accurate then the smartest individual. He then quotes examples for such behaviour and examples of when the crowds got it wrong when they acted not independently but in mass. I suspect that much of his arguments are sound.
How much I am not sure for example if I asked the average person independently if they believe there was much truth in astrology, I am sure that over 50% would say yes.
However since the book is making much comments, I hope to see some better studies coming forward.
Having said all this it has changed my views on decision making and how to do it.
Surowiecki is a gifted teacher.......2007-08-08
At first I was afraid that "The wisdom of crowds" was going to be a 250 page restatement of the law of large numbers for dummies. In the beginning it looks that way, because Surowiecki takes a lot of time to explain that the more people trying to guess the solution to a problem, each adding their own bit of information, the more accurate the average guess. Not very revolutionary at all (although possibly counterintuitive at first). But as the book moved on I got more and drawn in and impressed by the presentation, which is rigorous and supremely readable at the same time.
The book describes how crowds can solve problems of cognition, coordination and cooperation. It gives the conditions under which crowds are good and not good at doing so. The author illustrates with a myriad of interesting problems and case studies, some rather obvious choices (why do investment bubbles emerge?, why do political stock markets predict so well?), others more arcane (why did the gangsters in reservoir dogs fail?, why is it often easy to cut a line?). What binds these studies together is the way groups handle information and the good and bad institution designed to make them do so.
Throughout all the diversity, it is the great scholarship of Surowiecki that makes everything naturally fall into place. Being familiar with a lot of the material in academic form, I know how conceptually daring some of it is, but Surowiecki effortlessly reduces it to bite-size portions, without compromising much or exaggerating anywhere. Great reading!

Kabat-Zinn, founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, is perhaps the best-known proponent of using meditation to help patients deal with illness. (The somewhat confusing title is from a line in Zorba the Greek in which the title character refers to the ups and downs of family life as "the full catastrophe.") But this book is also a terrific introduction for anyone who has considered meditating but was afraid it would be too difficult or would include religious practices they found foreign. Kabat-Zinn focuses on "mindfulness," a concept that involves living in the moment, paying attention, and simply "being" rather than "doing." While you can practice anything "mindfully," from taking a walk to cleaning your house, Kabat-Zinn presents several meditation techniques that focus the attention most clearly, whether it's on a simple phrase, your breathing, or various parts of your body. The book goes into detail about how hospital patients have either improved their health or simply come to feel better despite their illness by using these techniques, but these meditations can help anyone deal with stress and gain a calmer outlook on life. "When we use the word healing to describe the experiences of people in the stress clinic, what we mean above all is that they are undergoing a profound transformation of view," Kabat-Zinn writes. "Out of this shift in perspective comes an ability to act with greater balance and inner security in the world." --Ben Kallen

Mindfullness.......2007-09-28
My boss suggested this book. He was correct that it would help me manage a personal crisis.
The Feeling Good Handbook.......2007-09-16
this is an awesome book to help those with anxiety, depression or someone expeiercing stress related problems . I only wish i had it sooner.
Meditation does not have to mean sitting still.......2007-07-28
Being mindful is a well-known technique for lowering stress. Jon Kabat Zinn has the experience to show us how this is done. I really liked this book and his descriptions.
However, as a person with ADD, the idea of trying to sit still for 45 minutes and quieting my mind seemed impossible. But after his explanations of walking meditation and using yoga as meditation I could see myself meditating.
This book is a classic and rightly so. Well worth your time (for reading and trying the techniques) and money (for the book, and if you use yoga for the accessories).
WONDERFUL!.......2007-07-19
I echo what others have said, it opens up a new way of thinking about life. All of it-the good and bad. How you relate to the world as a whole, and the possibilities that awit you. It's not magical and "out there" but rather down to earth and user-friendly.
Doesn't matter your religion/lack of religion. It integrates very well with my Christian faith.
This book lets you consider things at your own pace and doesn't force anything on you. It deals with your reality and success isn't defined as being 100% happy all the time. Are you sad? Deal with that. Are you scared? That's ok. Are things going well? Great, now we can move onto new things from here.
I also have "where ever you go, there you are". As a biologist I feel this one is more intriguing but they both have a place.
A remarkable book.......2007-07-03
This is an extraordinary work, which will be of immense value to those suffering pain or grave illness. Its value lies in very practical, repeat practical, advice based on clinical practice and experience which have benefited many. It is original and pathbreaking. Above all, it holds out hope to those who may have abandoned it.

An Outstanding Read!.......2007-10-09
I admit, I like to read. However, in my busy schedule, it seems that I find less and less time to sit down and read a book from cover to cover. It was hard to put this book down, but DeMoss breaks up the book into small 5-10 minute chunks that you can handle easily.
He has practical, right-on advice that you can use at work and at home. He uses stories to remind you to use time wisely, to tackle that hard project, to be a person of integrity and how you should relate to the opposite sex (just a few of the subjects mentioned in the 24 short chapters of this book).
There is a lot of knowledge in our world today but much less wisdom. This book takes you on a spiritual journey without you even realizing it. I can't say enough good about this book!
Book for Life!.......2007-09-05
The Little Red Book of Wisdom by Mark Demoss is one of the most influencial books on "life" that I have ever read. It is a short read, but one that you will reference repeatedly. I purchased a few of these books to give to those I care about.

You don't find many books that you honestly can't bear to put down. The Little Red Book of Wisdom is sincerely one of them. It is a testimonial book of sorts that models and inspires Christian integrity for business, family, and relationships in general.
The author runs a public relations business, and leads his company using Godly wisdom and sound priorities (family over business, people over $, and Godly integrity over everything).
Mark DeMoss attributes much of his ethos to his father who passed away when the author was only 17 years old. He says that his father was the wisest man he has ever known. I think it is astounding how much DeMoss' father impacted his life, and so many others vicariously through his son, when he invested only 17 short years with his boy. This teaches us to invest our time intently, and on the right things.
Book Description
The Wisdom of Wallace D. Wattles - Including: The Science of Getting Rich, The Science of Being Great & The Science of Being Well
The Science of Getting Rich
THIS book is pragmatical, not philosophical; a practical manual, not a treatise upon theories. It is intended for the men and women whose most pressing need is for money; who wish to get rich first, and philosophize afterward. It is for those who have, so far, found neither the time, the means, nor the opportunity to go deeply into the study of metaphysics, but who want results and who are willing to take the conclusions of science as a basis for action, without going into all the processes by which those conclusions were reached. It is expected that the reader will take the fundamental statements upon faith, just as he would take statements concerning a law of electrical action if they were promulgated by a Marconi or an Edison; and, taking the statements upon faith, that he will prove their truth by acting upon them without fear or hesitation. Every man or woman who does this will certainly get rich; for the science herein applied is an exact science, and failure is impossible. For the benefit, however, of those who wish to investigate philosophical theories and so secure a logical basis for faith, I will here cite certain authorities. The monistic theory of the universe the theory that One is All, and that All is One; That one Substance manifests itself as the seeming many elements of the material world -is of Hindu origin, and has been gradually winning its way into the thought of the western world for two hundred years. It is the foundation of all the Oriental philosophies, and of those of Descartes, Spinoza, Leibnitz, Schopenhauer, Hegel, and Emerson. The reader who would dig to the philosophical foundations of this is advised to read Hegel and Emerson for himself. In writing this book I have sacrificed all other considerations to plainness and simplicity of style, so that all might understand. The plan of action laid down therein was deduced from the conclusions of philosophy; it has been thoroughly tested, and bears the supreme test of practical experiment; it works. If you wish to know how the conclusions were arrived at, read the writings of the authors mentioned above; and if you wish to reap the fruits of their philosophies in actual practice, read this book and do exactly as it tells you to do.
The Science of Being Great
"... in Mr. Wattles' book, "THE SCIENCE OF BEING GREAT", you will get methods, plans, carefully outlined instruction, for the highest self-development and training for efficient living."
&
The Science of Being Well
If you are well this book will tell you how to keep so. If you are seeking better health this book is for you. _
Each book builds upon the previous one to construct a complete, simple, practical, easy-to-understand, step-by-step system for getting rich, being healthy, and becoming successful.

Science of Getting Rich, Great & Well.......2007-05-16
This trio of books - really more like long essays is a quick read. It is very interesting to see the beginnings of the current "Secret" craze in this early 1900's work. Some of the examples are antiquated due to the period during which it was written, but the basic tenets are very much in line with current abundance and prosperity works I have read. Editors notes help to explain some of the prevalent thinking at the time the books were written.
Book Description
First published in 1992 this anthology quickly became the standard for multicultural introductions to philosophy. Composed of a group of culturally diverse readings addressing a selection of seminal philosophical questions in ethics, epistemology, and metaphysics, VOICES OF WISDOM introduces students to the traditional terrain of philosophy as developed in the European tradition, yet in a manner that embraces significant philosophical insights borne out of different cultural legacies.

I liked Voices of Wisdom. This book is a very educational tool. It covers ideas and articles from such philosophers as Jean Paul Sartre, David Hume, Socrates, and etc... The book has a wide variety of ideas, and arguments. This book is good for a student just beginning to learn philosophy. I would be pleased to recommend this book to anyone curious about the subject.

Quite possibly every female over the age of 12 will find this huge book enlightening, pain saving, and perhaps even lifesaving. Think of it as a much more empowering and holistic Our Bodies, Ourselves. Northrup is a gynecologist who acknowledges the power of natural therapies and herbs, but also maintains that allopathic treatments, including surgery, are sometimes best. In Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom, she covers the treatment of many physical concerns--among them PMS, menstrual cramps, breast cancer, fibroids, endometriosis, infertility, depression, childbirth, abortion, cystitis, and menopause--explaining how many of these physical problems have roots in emotional upsets. For example, a woman who is unhappy with her marriage may be infertile because deep down, she knows that her husband is not the right man to have children with; a teenager who has cramps may be having problems accepting society's expectations of her as a woman.
Some readers may be put off at first by Northrup's obviously unconventional ways of thinking. Her medical approach is decidedly feminist, blaming our "addictive" and patriarchal society for many of the health problems plaguing women. She clearly illustrates her ideas, however, by drawing upon two decades of experience from her medical practice and citing dozens of her patients' remarkable personal stories. Northrup also delineates the best way to go about tuning in to one's body and mind in order to start the healing process, a self-induced therapy of sorts. She also includes in the book a copy of the eye-opening health inventory she gives her clients. It includes unusual questions such as "Are you bored with your life?" and "Do you have enough friends or neighbors?"
This book will be of special benefit to women who are pregnant or entering menopause. Northrup is an unequivocal believer in natural births and her dialogue on the birthing process will remove the fears of even the most petrified mother-to-be. She criticizes episiotomies (she should know; she's given birth without one) and supports midwifery. She also warns against the harmfulness of cesarean births and includes illustrations of acupressure points that help turn around a breech baby.
For women in perimenopause or menopause, Northrup will help turn this life phase into one of peace and personal growth instead of one of suffering. She was one of the first doctors to use natural progesterone to treat menopausal symptoms, and this revised edition includes a clear primer on the latest in hormone replacement therapy and how to determine if it's right for you. Northrup also expounds upon the benefits of acupuncture and herbalism--as well as emotional self-analysis--for alleviating hot flashes and mood swings. --Erica Jorgensen

I keep buying copies, then giving them away, even to my Dr........2007-10-17
This book is powerful information for any woman who wants to really take care of herself...and humorously tells you why and how to do just that. I have given copies to my daughters, one just weeks before she delivered her first baby. She was really scared of the birth process, and read the chapters on pregnancy and childbirth as I asked. After the delivery, she told me how she drew on the information Dr. Northrop wrote from personal experience....and was thrilled at how much it made sense and really worked. I then gave my next copy to my own internist, pregnant with her first child who wasn't taking the time to "be pregnant". She wrote a thank you note to say how much she had gotten out of the book, and had given herself permission to be a little less of a doctor to all of her patients and more of a mother to this unborn child. Give yourself a great present; buy this book and the book "Understanding: Train of Thought" and READ THEM from front to back.
Look beyond the physical.......2007-10-10
This is a fascinating book, that makes so much sense. the power of our thoughts and emotions on the body has been known for a long time by the masters of yoga. This book, takes it even further and looks at the female reproductive system and its functioning from a holistic perspective and that is exciting
great book for all women.......2007-09-27
my sister gave me a copy as a gift and I then bought a copy for each of my daughters. Every woman should read this book--actually every man who lives with a woman or girl should read this book.
Couldn't they afford an editor? 905 pages?????.......2007-09-05
I'm sorry if this has been mentioned in other reviews. I don't have time to read them all.
But this book is too big to hold and read! It's just unwieldy. And it's very cheap stock, almost like newsprint. Even upon the first light reading, the inner binding gave way. Disappointing!
I'll keep it on the shelf, for reference, but I won't read it through.
I have enjoyed Northrup's books in the past -- and her newsletters as well -- but I feel like she's overstepping her bounds. I'm all for the study of chakras, metaphysics, etc.--sticking to straight allopathic medicine will kill you, IMHO -- and she used to give the whole smorgasbord. But now, when she doesn't have all the medical facts, she throws in a psychological/patriarchal explanation. As I mentioned in a comment to Adelie's review, the result is blaming the the victim and not offering real tools for healing. Dangerous.

The World's Religions, by Huston Smith, has been a standard introduction to its eponymous subject since its first publication in 1958. Smith writes humbly, forswearing judgment on the validity of world religions. His introduction asks, "How does it all sound from above? Like bedlam, or do the strains blend in strange, ethereal harmony? ... We cannot know. All we can do is try to listen carefully and with full attention to each voice in turn as it addresses the divine. Such listening defines the purpose of this book." His criteria for inclusion and analysis of religions in this book are "relevance to the modern mind" and "universality," and his interest in each religion is more concerned with its principles than its context. Therefore, he avoids cataloging the horrors and crimes of which religions have been accused, and he attempts to show each "at their best." Yet The World's Religions is no pollyannaish romp: "It is about religion alive," Huston writes. "It calls the soul to the highest adventure it can undertake, a proposed journey across the jungles, peaks, and deserts of the human spirit. The call is to confront reality." And by translating the voices of Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Confucianism, Christianity, and Judaism, among others, Smith has amplified the divine call for generations of readers. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
Originally titled The Religions of Man, this completely revised and updated edition of Smith's masterpiece, now with an engaging new foreword, explores the essential elements and teachings of the world's predominant faiths, including:
- Hinduism,
- Buddhism,
- Confucianism,
- Taoism,
- Islam,
- Judaism,
- Christianity,
- and the native traditions of the Americas, Australia, Africa, and Oceania.
Emphasising the inner –– rather than institutional –– dimensions of these religions, Smith devotes special attention to Zen and Tibetan Buddhism, Sufism, and the teachings of Jesus. He convincingly conveys the unique appeal and gifts of each of the traditions and reveals their hold on the human heart and imagination.

The World of the late fifties Religions.......2007-09-23
This is not a bad overview of some of the World's religions, but the reader should take care. Although I originally considered the book as a text for a survey course I am teaching on the subject, after reading some of the selections more closely, I was unsure that the book would work. It is well-written and interesting to read, to be sure, but smacks of a certain condescension or has a patronizing tone that came off as a little biased. I might still use the text to demonstrate a point of view, but have concerns that some of the students in the class whose own traditions were discussed by the author might take exception at how he portrays or writes about them. The book is a product of its time -- pre civil rights, pre feminist, pre alot of things. Yet, like a number of sort of "classics", it has its merits.
An excellent book for mutual understanding.......2007-08-29
What started me on reading this book was a talk with a Muslim lady. It was in 1997 at a park in California, U.S. She was a mother of two little children and so was I. We somehow slipped into a sensitive topic like religions. She was Muslim and very happy with it. When I told her I was Buddhist, she said,"Buddhism is a beautiful religion". I was so moved because it was the last remark I expected from a person of a different religious background. She had taken a class of religious study in a university, and this book was the textbook.
This book clearly shows the main ideas of world religions. It is not only good for understanding other people's religion but also helpful in understanding my religious background. I realized that religious environment of Japan is a mosaic of Hinduism, Buddism, Confucianism and Taoism on the base of Shintoism (one of the primal religions). Since around 1868, Japan has been influenced with an idea that the wolrd should become better if you really work hard together, as you see in social movements, which I think derived from Christianity.
Introduction to the World's Great Religions.......2007-07-21
This book is absolutely EXCELLENT in its coverage of the wide array of world religions. One large missing gap, however, is a discussion of African traditional/indigenous religions (such as Yoruba), and African-Caribbean religions (such as Vodun). This is a major weakness of the book. For example, in using the book for a summer World Religions course, I had to independently gather excerpts from other books and additional articles so that African-based traditional religions could be included along with the rest of the world. While the book contains numerous photographs of people of African descent practicing the various world religions, it does not contain a discussion of religions that originated with them and that are still widely practiced. It is important also for people who read the book to learn that while Western versions of Christianity, and while Islam is practiced in Africa, such religions are are re-configured by Africans and merged with various elements of traditional indigenous African religion. The Independent African Christian churches are examples of this type of integration. I think that the next edition of this book should add such a section. Perhaps a scholar such as Mbiti might be added to the group of scholars who compose the next edition.
As a college text - use with reservation.......2007-07-16
This book is often recommended as a good classic for an introduction to the world's religions. It was the first book I read on the subject many years ago when I started on my own long journey to study the world's religions. I recently used this book as a text for my college class on the world's religions but, to my dismay, my students found it most difficult reading. I have to agree with my students that Smith can be a bit wordy at times as he runs on and on in an attempt to explain complex religious concepts and values to drive the point home in ways that the western reader can relate to (was I too wordy there?). Personally, I like the book for what it offers: Smith gets right to the heart of the religions, bypassing all the superficial history, creeds and practices. He really does capture the most important essence of each religion and does so in a way that really makes each religion shine - putting its "best foot forward." And that he does try to relate these otherwise foreign ideas to the reader is the real value of this book. But the astute reader will want to beware that Smith leaves a lot unsaid: If you are looking to learn the history and practices of these religions, you'd best look elsewhere.
I recommend using Irving A. Sparks' "Reading and Writing Workbook" as a companion to Smith if you are serious about wanting to focus on the most essential points Smith is making (although my students often failed to use good critical reading skills so as to identify the most essential points in an effort to answer the questions in the Workbook).
Simplicity, Clarity and Profundity.......2007-06-13
Dr. Huston Smith's updated magnum opus provides unparalleled and valuable insight into the manifold expressions of humankind's deepest and longest-lived religious impulses. Don't expect this book (or any of Dr. Smith's books, articles or interviews) to reflect dusty and dry academic renditions of the superficial commonalities and differences betwixt and between the world's religions. Rather, revel in Dr. Smith's ability to elegantly and poetically describe the authentic profundities and differing world views in each. A life-long Methodist, born to missionary parents in China, Dr. Smith has immersed himself in these various traditions for long periods and, from experience and understanding, separates gold from institutional/cultural dross. As the world shrinks and our numbers grow it is ever more important to go beyond the implied condescension of simple tolerance towards a deeper understanding and appreciation of religious traditions and expressions that differ from our own. If you read only one "religious" book in your lifetime, make it this one. Dr. Smith is a global treasure.
