Book Description
The Fleet Air Arm (FAA) served with distinction in every theater of war throughout World War II. From its poorly equipped beginnings - it started the war with few suitable, modern, carrier-born fighters - to the final campaigns over the Japanese home islands, the FAA proved an effective fighting force wherever it went.
Desperate action over Malta and the Mediterranean during 1940-42, in the Indian and Pacific Oceans over Sumatra, the Atlantic battles and Artic Convoys, and the invasion of Okinawa, were just some of the famous and terrible actions they took part in.
FAA Pilots, despite the initial poor equipment, had the distinction of being responsible for both the first, and last, enemy aircraft to be shot down during the war.
Featuring first-hand accounts, combat reports, photographs from private collections, and an array of color plates depicting the range of profiles and symbolic markings that were used, this book will detail the history and combat experiences of these forgotten pilots who served with such distinction for the Allied cause.

Exciting Exploits of Little-Known Royal Navy Fighter Aces!.......2007-08-20
Considering the aerial duds Royal Navy fighter pilots flew, especially in the early war years, it was an eye-opener to discover that 36 RN pilots made ace in World War II! The aerial exploits of this unique group of men is the subject of Andrew Thomas' latest book for Osprey, #75 in their Aces series. It's a wonderfully interesting story that all air combat fans should enjoy.
The Royal Navy only regained control of its Fleet Air Arm from the Royal Air Force in May 1939. Consequently, at war's outbreak, RN fighter squadrons were equipped with the underpowered Blackburn Skua, Gloster Gladiator biplanes and the gun-turreted abortion, the Blackburn Roc! Despite being saddled with these second-stringers, Fleet Air Arm fliers like Skua pilot Bill Lucy used their mounts effectively, Lucy becoming the first Fleet Air Arm ace of the war.
Lumbering Fairey Fulmars were next on the scene and again, enterprising RN pilots used their aircraft to the fullest. The top Fulmar ace, Graham Hogg, scored 12 kills! The subsequent arrival of first-class fighters such as the Wildcat, Sea Hurricane, Seafire, Corsair and Hellcat enabled later RN pilots to score the magic five kills.
Aside from flying an incredible variety of aircraft, RN fighter pilots served in all theaters. Thomas does an excellent job of relating the far-flung exploits of what were some incredible fighter pilots. This is an especially lively entry in the Osprey Aces series due, in part, to the 'characters' that flew RN fighters and Thomas' engaging writing style.
The book includes over 90 photographs and 12 pages of color profiles by Chris Davey.
In short, a very nice piece of work, well-written and informative.

Excellent Text Not For The Casual Reader.......2007-04-29
This book is a serious educational tool for modern fighter pilots. I tried reading it in high school when I thought I wanted to "grow up to be a fighter pilot." The best thing about it is that I learned that being a fighter pilot requires a lot more knowledge of math and physics than I'd ever imagined. Real fighter jocks have to be a great deal smarter than they are portrayed in movies.
The subject matter is fascinating, and the book is clear and well-written. If you read it carefully, you will certainly learn something, but unless you are also sitting in a cockpit day after day, you won't have any context for the information you've put in your head.
I suppose a die-hard combat flight sim pilot might be able to improve his or her air combat skills with this book, but, honestly, for a civilian, the only reason to read this book is because you are so obsessed with air combat that you simply must immerse yourself in this subject matter. I doubt someone who has never flown into real air-to-air combat will ever have a true appreciation of the knowledge this book has to offer.
If you are serious about Combat Flight sims..........2007-02-11
... then this book is a must-have. However if you are a pretty casual flight simmer and just are out for fun, this will just complicate your approach unnecessarily.
I got it with the intention of getting more serious, but unless you are a young person with ambitions of joining the air force, you may be better off just getting what info there is on line already.
This book covers all aspects of ACM, and it is excellent for that. Just that after having read the book, I found I lacked the time to PRACTICE the maneuvers covered therein. And practice is the only way you will be able to translate what's in the book into anything more real. If you have an interest in combat flight, you may enjoy the book anyway, on another level.
All in all I'd have to say that it was a good addition to my library- now just trying to get the time to implement it in my fav sim.
Fighter Combat: Tactics and Maneuvering.......2007-01-30
A very competent insight on the dynamics of ACM and the relationship of the aircraft and weapon systems.
The definitive book on air combat.......2006-12-13
Fighter Combat by Shaw is the definitive book on air combat in any decade.
Like so many others have said, Shaw's book is utterly comprehensive, covering everything from the most basic of basics, to advanced maneuvering tactics for fighting when faced with superior odds and superior aircraft. I originally purchased Fighter Combat as an aid to my knowledge in combat flight simulators, but I quickly found that even small portions of Shaw's book contained a level of knowledge that absolutely dwarfed my own.
Highly, highly recommended. If you're a flight-sim enthusiast, a jet fighter enthusiast or the like, there is no more authoritative work.
A fighter pilot's textbook.......2006-11-27
Although no previous knowledge is assumed, this textbook on fighter tactics is strictly no-nonsense and requires committed study. Diagrams show the movement of aircraft by tracing the path of their wingtips, then have marked discussion points, as is evident by this pretty typical excerpt:
"The direction chosen by the defender to stop his roll at time '3' is calculated so that the inverted, wings-level pull-down will place him at point '4', the peak of the maneuver, with his nose aimed at a point almost directly above the bogey's predicted position at that time..."
Here's a list of chapters:
Fighter Weapons
Basic Fighter Maneuvers
One-versus-One Maneuvering, Similar Aircraft
One-versus-One Maneuvering, Dissimilar Aircraft
Section Tactics, Two versus One
Section Tactics, Two-versus-Two
Division Tactics
Unlimited-Aircraft Tactics
Fighter Missions
Tactical Intercepts
Appendix: Fighter Performance
Each chapter is broken down into sections, most with a diagram and about 4 pages of text. Here's how "Basic Fighter Maneuvers" is broken down:
Pursuit Curves
Lag Displacement Rolls
High Yo-Yo
Low Yo-Yo
Lead Turn
Nose-to-Nose and Nose-to-Tail Turns
Flat Scissors
Vertical and Oblique Turns
Rolling Scissors
Defensive Spiral
Notes
Sprinkled throughout are pity quotes that illustrate particular points and lighten the mood:
"Aerial gunnery is 90 percent instinct and 10 percent aim"

Fascinating View of How Far Advanced They Were.......2007-01-28
The German aircraft designers were ahead of the rest of the world during World War II. Advances in power plants including turbojets (ME-262), ramjets, rockets (ME-163) and pulse jets (V-1), allowed the airframe manufacturers to expand their thinking from the traditional single seat, single engine fighters that were really used throught the war.
In this book the author has collected the proposals from German aircraft manufacturers and shows just how far that thinking had expanded. Here are the forefathers of the MIG-15, the British Scorpion, deltas like the F-102 and many more. This book, the first volume in the series contans fighter aircraft from the companies Arado through Junkers. The next volume will finish the manufacturers from Lippisch to Zeppelin. After that I shouldn't be surprized to see a book on bombers.
The aircraft are shown with a summary of information agout them, a three view line draw line drawing, and a painting of what it would have looked like in action. I don't know just how many planes are described, perhaps a hundred and fifty.
It's fascinating to see what they might have done given a few more years,
Book Description
Once known as the "Last of the Gunfighters", the Vought F-8 Crusader has since become a legend in the histories of the U.S. and French navies, as well as a scourge in the skies over North Vietnam in the late 1960s! CRUSADER! is a vital oral history of one of the most controversial fighter planes in carrier aviation. A key to the authenticity of this story are the author's personal interviews with sixteen of the seventeen living Crusader pilots who became MiG killers in the Vietnam air war. His analysis of their aerial engagements over North Vietnam from 1965 to 1973 contains some startling surprises, as well as a validation of many of the tactical lessons learned from World War II and Korea. CRUSADER! also contains personal accounts by F-8 speed record holders such as U.S. Marine Corps Major (now Senator) John Glenn and Captains Bob Dose and "Duke" Windsor. Other aviation records held by the Crusader, (not so enviable) are told, in anecdotal form, for the first time by the author, an F-8 driver and participant in some of them! Colorful, and sometimes humorous, accounts of events involving the F-8 and "Crusader Drivers" abound in this chronicle of carrier aviation covering the three decades when this remarkable airplane was an important element of the U.S. Navy's carrier strike forces. Rear Admiral Paul T. Gillcrist commanded a fleet Crusader squadron, then a carrier air wing and finally, as a flag officer, became wing commander for all Pacific Fleet fighter squadrons. During his fleet squadron command he completed three carrier deployments to the Tonkin Gulf and flew 167 combat missions in the Crusader for which he was awarded seventeen combat decorations. The author of FEET WET, Reflections of a Carrier Pilot (1990) and TOMCAT, The Grumman F-14 Story (1994), Admiral Gillcrist is well qualified to write the story of the Crusader!, over 200 color and b/w photographs, 8 1/2" x 11"
Customer Reviews:
Excellent aircraft history.......2006-08-18
A "must read" for anyone who appreciates the F-8 (or wants to) or just loves military aviation. A thorough history of this amazing airplane and those who flew it through a collection of great first-hand fighter pilot's stories. Some are told from the author's own experience and many more from other Crusader pilots interviewed by the author. For example: John Glenn's record-breaking flight in his own words, along with many accounts of Vietnam MiG encounters. I loved this book and plan on reading much more by this author.
I Cannot Recommend This Book Highly Enough.......1998-09-24
This is a fantastic collection of pilot's stories dealing with the "Last of the Gunfighters" the Vought F-8 Crusader. Rear Admiral Paul T Gillcrist has 2000 hours of Crusader time and his impressive knowledge and affection for the aircraft is very apparent throughout. The first part of the book arms the reader with background knowledge of early jet carrier operations as well as the story of Crusader speed records. The bulk of the book deals with the experiences, both harrowing and amusing, of numerous Crusader pilots including fascinating interviews with each pilot to shoot down a MiG in the aircraft. The final chapters give the author's expert analysis of the air war in Vietnam, and an overview of the use of the aircraft by the French Navy, the Naval Reserve and NASA. The book does not suffer from the shortfall of other books in that it is very skilfully written so that a layman can imagine theirself in the thick of the action. After reading this book you are left with a great respect for the men of the US Navy and Marine Corps who flew and fought in the Crusader and operated the aircraft from small aircraft carriers. As a commercial pilot I can only wonder how I would cope with landing a Mach2 airplane on a small heaving 27C carrier deck at night. To these men it was routine. Anyone who is remotely interested in aviation will find this book a great asset to their collection and I cannot recommend it highly enough

One of the Great Aviation Books.......2007-03-15
Jerry Cook's "Once A Fighter Pilot" is one of the books that occupies a small section of my shelf reserved for truly extraordinary books written by pilots. Many fighter jocks are good at BFM, formation, gunnery, instrument flying, and other skills, but the ones who can evoke strong emotion through the written word are scarce. My military flying career is past, but this book takes me right back into the cockpit, in a way few books do.
This book is the real deal, folks.
Best buy yet........2006-04-18
I first saw this book in a local bookstore and saw the cover. I didnt really now what it was about, but when I read it it was the best book yet. It is on my Absolute Favorite list.Since I bought the book I have read it over 5 times, and find something new each time. It has also made me want to be a fighter pilot in our Air Force. A must read for anyone.
One of the best of the genre.......2006-03-13
I've read "Once a Fighter Pilot" more than once, and greatly enjoyed it each time. It's an intriguing mix of stories about flying in Vietnam, flying at MacDill AFB while the F-4 was just becoming available, and many flight instructor tales. (And sometimes the flight instructor stories are scarier than the ones about flying in Vietnam!) He's opinionated, open, honest, and to the point.
I consider this to be in the top 5% of its genre because it covers such a broad area and does it well. There are perhaps better and/or more detailed autobiographies specifically about flying in Vietnam, but this one is one of the few which really covers Air Force life during the 60s. I also like the overall style, it's a series of short tales in chronological order rather than a more continuous work.
It's a fun read--you won't regret it.
Sierra Hotel!.......2005-11-10
If you want to get an idea of what it was like to be a fighter pilot during this time frame, this book is one heck of a place to start! Let me assure you, it is the way it was.
Highly recommended!!
Full Afterburner.......2003-08-25
I've had the pleasure of meeting Jerry Cook and I can tell you he is what an aerial warrior is all about. This means he appreciates not only the firepower that is his responsibility, but also the restraint that is necessary as well. Above all, being a pilot myself, I can viscerally place myself in his rapt descriptions of aircraft performance and raw power. His situational "awareness" and extraordinary flying skills easily flow off the page, and speak to the incredible edge that must be developed and maintained to fight and survive in ACM environments.
Jerry, thanks for your service to the country. Although the war was extraordinarily complicated, with no real winners, the fact that you gave your all to your Commander in Chief under the flag of freedom is appreciated and respected.
Book Description
Here is the life story of the most successful fighter pilot of all time, with 352 air combat victories - who spent ten and a half years behind Soviet barbed wire, surviving prison uprisings, hunger strikes, resistance against the NKVD and forced labor. After being released he was still mentally and physically fit enough to fly F-86 jet fighters in the post - World War II German Air Force. This photo album presents the stages of his life - a man who wished to become a doctor, but whose fate it was to become and remain a soldier. If Erich Hartmann were "only" the most successful fighter pilot of all time, that itself would be noteworthy. But its uniqueness would no doubt fade with time. What makes Erich Hartmann stand out from the crowd even by today's standards is that personal integrity and unshakable character which helped him remain true to his convictions while enduring merciless burdens, and the courage to be tough when his convictions demanded it , over 560 b/w photographs, 8 1/2" x 11"

A Feast for the Eyes!.......2007-06-07
If you are wanting to read about the life of Erich Hartmann, then this book isn't for your. If you want to SEE an intimate, historic look into his life presented by the one person who knew him best, then this book definitely is for you. "The Blonde Knife of Germany" remains the best history of the World's Top Ace, so this is where to learn more of Hartmann's life. However, I think Ursula's book is a must have and fantastic companion book with "The Blonde Knight". The two belong together on your bookshelf, and you won't be disappointed. Hey, another fine product of Schiffer Publishing!
This is a wanderfull book!.......2005-08-25
I readed it the same way I can look at a family album. The illustrations Ursula choosed to represent her husband, are surprisingly intimate.Throught out the book, I felt very close to Erich Hartmann. I can only admire that man who fought all is life for Germany against the Soviet Union. It's also amasing to think that just before he died, he saw the downfall of the soviet regime and the reunification of Germany. So until the end, he is a true winner! There is only one edition of that book and it's getting hard to find. I strongly advise anibody who's passionate about history and the german military aviation to purchase this precious and unique book.
Two Words: Picture Book.......1999-11-03
For those familiar with Erich Hartmann and would rather see him than read about his life, this is your book. Text is limited.
A Story Of Triumph And Courage In Pictures.......1997-08-31
Erich Alfred Hartmann (1922-1993) is the top-scoring
fighter pilot in the annals of aerial combat. He
flew for Germany during the Second World War
and scored the vast majority of his astounding
352 aerial victories against the Soviets on the
Eastern Front. Nicknamed "Bubi" (German for 'boy')
because of his youthful countenance, Hartmann
was a member of Jagdgeschwader (Fighter Wing) 52
from Novemeber 1942 until the end of the war in
May of 1945. On one spectacular mission, Erich
shot down four American P-51 Mustangs over the
oil fields at Ploesti, Rumania. After the war,
Hartmann, who won the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves,
Crossed Swords, and Diamonds, was unceremoniously
handed over to the USSR by his American captors.
From May 1945 until October of 1955, Erich Hartmann
was confined in Soviet prisons and branded a "war
criminal" by the vengeful Stalin and his henchmen.
While in the gulags, Erich's father and his infant
son, whom he had never held, died in Germany.
Released in 1955 after the death of Stalin, Hartmann
returned to active duty in the new Luftwaffe and
was key in training the next generation of German
flyers in the ways of aerial combat. Erich retired
from active service in 1970 and enjoyed a peaceful
life until his passing in September of 1993.
This gorgeous photo album, composed by his loving
wife Ursula and introduced by Manfred Jager,
chronicles Hartmann's life from his childhood in
pre-war Germany, his military training and combat,
his inspiring and enduring romance with Ursula Paetsch,
and ends with his rebirth in Richthofen Geschwader
71.
I simply cannot recommend this book enough. It is
an excellent companion to Toliver & Constable's
"The Blonde Knight of Germany", an in-depth biography
of Hartmann's life. One does not have to necessarily
be an aviation buff to enjoy these titles as Hartmann's
story is much, much more than just his
accomplishments in the air. His was a life of courage,
love, dedication, honor, and perseverance that can serve
as an inspiration for all.

Author Background That Didn't Make The Book..........2007-04-18
What didn't make the notes is that "Diz" Dean (my father) passed away in 2001 before he was able to finish this book but, Dan Hagedorn, noted Curtiss historian, stepped in to complete it. Here is a section that didn't make the publication:
"Francis Hale Dean was born in Bridgeport, CT in 1925 where at a very young age he became fasinated with airplanes when his father, a second-generation Harvard-educated engineer took him to the local airport one weekend. Later, when his father suddenly passed away at 31, his young widowed mother and baby sister moved in with his mother's parents in the sleepy seaport town of Marblehead, MA -- but the memories of his visiting the Bridgeport airport lasted a lifetime, and we are all the benficiaries.
For years afterword young "Franny" would send to aircraft manufacturers for their sales brochures, collecting information on the aircraft of the times. One day two salesmen fron Stinson traveled from Boston several hours away and called on the residence of the man who had requested information on their Reliance, only to be told by his bewildered mother answering the door that Francis was only seven years old!
As a teenage, young "Diz" (nick-named for the famous pitcher Dizzy Dean) while pitching during a high school baseball game brought the game to a complete halt for several minutes, stopping to study a formation of fighter aircraft passing overhead (ferrying to England?), much to the chagrin of his coach. Thus he secured his reputation as an aircraft afficionado in the small town. Always a good student, he graduated fifth in his class.
A supportive grandfather living in nearby Lexington, MA (an established steam manufacturing engineer and principal of the Boston engineering firm Dean and Main (now Charles T. Main), and professor at Harvard)encouraged young Dean to pursue an education at Harvard. However Diz disappointed him by favoring the "other" engineering school in Boston, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and their Aeronautical Engineering program.
A stint in the Navy interrupted his college career when all able-bodied men were called to serve during WWII. At eighteen, he was stationed at sea and in mainland China. He would later say that he wanted to go to flight school but a strong-willed widowed mother forbad it, fearing for his safety. Dreams of flight never left him during the service; as an excellent freehand drawer, at sea he often passed the time decorating his bunk with his realistically-rendered action pictures of fighter aircraft of the period, mostly drawn in detail from memory.
Returning from the War to Marblehead to complete his studies, he married resident and high school classmate Evelyn Gardner who me met when he returned to the high school where she worked in the office processing transcripts for returning vets. After graduating from MIT with an AE degree he took a job with The Curtiss Wright Corp. of West Caldwell, NJ (now Fairfield) in the propeller division. He worked at C-W until 1965. When he left he worked in preliminary design where he was head design engineer of the VTOL aircraft X-19, which also is the subject of one of his books. In 1965 he moved his family to Swarthmore, PA and spent the rest of his career as design engineer at Boeing-Vertol of Ridley, PA until retiring in 1986.
During his career he also spent many personal hours adding to his growing collection of historical aviation material, including cataloging of production data on many models and versions of American miltary aircraft; swapping rare historical photos and negatives with other prominent collectors nationally, and otherwise researching topics with a particular interest in different production types and their engineering foundation. He also collected aviation books; became active in the American Aviation Historical Society and the American Helicoptor Society. Curtiss Aviation was a life-long area of particular interest.
When he retired in 1986 he turned to writing and editing aircraft history books. Before he died in November, 2001 he had written and published five books including the primer on the subject of comparative performance of WWII fighters, America's Hundred Thousand. His life-long collection is now part of the Air and Space division of the Smithsonian, where it can be viewed upon request ("Dean Collection"). This work was his last contribution, as he passed before he could complete it. HIs family is very grateful to Dan Hagedorn, a long time friend of Diz and Evie for completing it including securing and adding a previously-undiscovered list of all Curtiss production aircraft from the collection of noted historian and author Pete Bower also passed; and at great trouble and expense adding some color photos as well as many other contributions throughout."
Bob Dean, 4/07
Probably the definitive book about Curtiss fighter aircraft.......2007-02-05
The authors have written an excellent book covering all fighter aircraft built by Curtiss. It is loaded with pictures and there is an extensive narrative. There are many illustration of interesting and unusual versions of the various Curtiss models. There is a picture of a Japanese P-40 and information about a squadron of P-40s captured by and use operationally by the Japanese during World War 2 (for a short time until parts ran out). The P-36 (Hawk 75) and P-40 sections are a book in themselves. The section on post World War 2 models through the P-87 jet are quite good. Early Curtiss models are also covered very well. This book covers only fighter aircraft and does not cover other important Curtiss transports, seaplanes, dive bombers, etc. A book that covers all Curtiss aircraft is the excellent Putnam book "Curtiss Aircraft 1907-1947" by the late Peter Bowers. I do not believe it to be in print though it appears to be available used. If anyone wishes to have a large information base on Curtiss aircraft, these two books would do it.
The Most Complete Reference Book Available.......2007-01-28
Curtis was at one time the largest manufacturer of aircraft in the United States, and they produced virtually every type of air plane. This book is on the fighters they produced from 1917 through the end of World War II. Of course the largest sections in the book have to do with the P-36, a very popular pre-war fighter and the P-40 one of the standard fighters of the war with some 14,000 produced. (About 15,500 P-51s and P-47s were produced so the P-40 was right up there.)
The amount of information in this book is amazing. In the case of the P-40, every model is discussed, and you get the feeling that just about every design modification. There is also extensive coverage of the attempts by the company to produce effective follow-on designs. Some of these are most interesting, especially the P-60C which was to have a Chrysler XV-2220 V-16 engine of 2,300 HP of which I had never heard.
I can only hope that there's another similar book like this one on the other Curtis designs such as the C-46 Commando and the SB2C Helldiver.
A Great Reference Book.

Draw 50 Airplanes has been around for a while. I'm glad that it is still in print. Wish it had been around when I was a kid, doodling airplanes. A bunch of my favorites are there: Sopwiths, P-40s, Spitfires, F-86 Sabres, P-38s. Hopefully, someday, there will be a revised edition that can capture some late arrivals to the first century of flight that today's kids really like- the Space Shuttle, the SR-71 Blackbird, the F-117 Nighthawk. There are dozens of "how to sketch", "how to draw" titles out there. This is not one of those books. This book skips the nuances of perspective and the agony of descriptive geometry. It is not about fine art... it is not about drafting... When you sign a note to a friend, did you ever want to be able to add a quick Spitfire with a flourish? One that someone else thinks looks like a Spitfire? Or how about a sketch of the Wright Flyer? This is THAT kind of a book. This is about the serious business of producing a happy characture of the airplane that dances in your head. It will egg you on until you pick up a pencil and make an airplane appear on the page. It will help you perfect that skill. A curved line here, a pair of straight lines there. One pencil stroke at a time. And it obviously wasn't written just for kids. This book can help just about anyone create some really neat airplane doodles. Who knows what comes from that... So many rich experiences in life depend on having some early successes, the hopeful satisfaction that causes you to press onward... J. Campbell Martin

Book Description
Author John Moore is the "cat with nine lives" of the aviation fraternity. From his early days as a Naval Aviation Cadet he had a knack for flying but seemed to be in the neighborhood of disaster. Through two Korean combat tours, Navy test operations, his years as test pilot for North American Aviation, and the space program he was associated with many near and some real catastrophes.

Black Humor Meets The Right Stuff .......2007-02-20
A great story of flying during the transition from the great piston powered aircraft of WW2 to the jet age.
Also a good reminder that the most dangerous words in aviation are often an engineer saying, " I have a great idea." For them the danger of the first flight is that they will choke on their coffee. Such was the case of one project to rid carrier aircraft of their landing gear and to have them land on a rubber "bed" . Somehow I get the feeling that the engineering team never spent any time at sea, certainly not on a dark stormy night.
While it lacks the polish and emotional content of Stranger To the Ground, it packs more of a flying punch. And the author also pulls no punches when it comes to the so called Tailhook incident for which senior naval aviators were punished for simply being at the same hotel. All in the name of political correctness.
A Good Man; A Good Read.......2007-01-18
Cdr. John Moore gives a unique insight into the life of a naval aviator of the 40's through the 60's. Certainly not an easy life but one filled with its share of challenges and danger. Pretentious in no way, John Moore tells it like it was. And there is the added insight into the life of a naval aviation test pilot. If you have ever tested a plane, or would like to, you can gain some insights from this book. After his naval aviation and test pilot career, Mr. Moore ran operations and testing for the Apollo program and later became mayor of Cocoa Beach (home of Ron Jon's Surf Shop). Not your typical man; not your typical book.
Great Stories - Great Pilot!!!.......2004-09-20
This was a great tale of a pilot coming of age in the early jet days, when engineering had more to do with airplanes, than marketing.
The author is self-effacing, doesn't take himself or his (actually quite impressive) career too seriously.
Loved it!
After the reviews, a real disappointment..........2003-03-26
A friend of mine has praised this book to the skies, so I bought a copy, expecting cover-to-cover laughs and revealations. Instead, what I got was a -very- disorganized, rambling series of partial recollections which were, despite the disclaimer in the introduction, the memoirs of a single pilot. Most of the stories failed to be funny in any way and were only moderately shocking.
Most irritating of all was Chapter Twelve, which dealt with the author's anger at the Tailhook scandal/witchhunt and which had absolutely, positively nothing at all to do with anything else in the book. The chapter didn't belong. It was a distraction. Had any editing been done on the book, it should have been deleted entirely.
There were some good parts, and the first two-thirds of the book would be quite nice with some serious re-arranging and reworking to present a coherent and orderly progression of events. The material about test-flying the Cutlass and the obscenely stupid FlexDeck program are must-reads, but the section on Apollo 1 adds nothing to the reams of material written about that tragedy, and the material on Mr. Moore's training runs hot and cold. As a minor note, the tendency to use technical terms without explaining them to the casual reader makes for difficult reading in some spots.
All in all, if I'd found this in a library first, I never would have bought it; now that I have it, I can't recommend it to others, but I won't be giving my copy away either.

There are aviation memoirs..........2001-12-05
... and many of them have honored places in my library: Colonel Robert Scott's "God Is My Co-Pilot", Heinz Knoke's excellent and sadly unknown "I Flew for the Führer", Bob Hoover's "Forever Flying", Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger's "Lost Moon" (which is as much an autobiography of Lovell as a recounting of the Apollo 13 incident)...
... and then there's this book. If you go into "The Wrong Stuff" expecting another self-congratulatory throttle-jockey memoir (not that there's anything wrong with those :), you'll be sorely disappointed, because John Moore isn't the self-congratulatory throttle-jockey type. He seems frankly surprised that he survived his aviation career, and his tongue-in-cheek delight at being alive permeates the work. Somehow, this man managed to wind up involved in some of the wackiest projects in aviation history, and his wry reminiscences make this the funniest flyboy book in history. I'm just amazed, with his karma, that Moore didn't end up testing the Pogo Planes.
Highly, highly, highly recommended.
