Review.......2007-09-24
I enjoyed this book very much. I also learned through reading it the many different ways that officers can become coppupt and how to notice corruption before it even starts. This is an excellent book and I do recommend it to anyone who is interested in corruption of police and their departments.
An excellent introduction/overview.......2007-02-04
This book does an excellent job of introducing the reader to corruption, particularly what seems like inane and harmless corruption such as accepting free food from locals on your beat. It explains and expands on human nature, the desire to receive special treatment from those responsible for our protection or admnistration. I have also taken a class from Dr. Caldero, and I can say that a majority of the students in the class didn't understand his book at first, because they failed to see the danger in small or seemingly trivial corruption.
Police ethics are much more than this.......2003-06-13
After reading this book, I wondered whether the authors are or were cops themselves. At least one of them (Crank) isn't, and never has been. This makes sense, because the ethics cases presented in this book are bland and barely skim the surface of what we (cops) go through every day. On the face of it, the ethics questions seem reasonable. To those of us in the profession, they are laughable. Sorry, but this book is another one of those written by college professors who don't really understand the world of the cop.
A must read for all future employees of the Criminal Justice.......2001-05-12
Excellant Book! A must read for all future employees of the Criminal Justice System. This reminds me of another book I just read and recommend, U.S. Customs Badge of Dishonor. Both of these books demonstrate just how tuff it is to be a cop.

The Helpful Behavior Project:.......2006-09-10
Leifer leverages his background in psychiatry and psychotherapy to explain a Western view of the human condition.
Leifer leverages his background in Buddhism to explain an Eastern view of the human condition.
His combined experiences and his skill at synthesizing them enables him to explain both views. Which would be nice if that led somewhere constructive.
For the reader, certainly Leifer's efforts provide the additional advantage that one can (as I did as a Westerner) relate what Leifer says about Buddhism to my understanding of psychotherapy. I would expect an Easterner would similarly benefit from what Leifer says about psychotherapy based on the readers understanding of Buddhism. The two approaches complement and strengthen each other. In doing so, it seems to undercut any superiority assumed by advocates of either Eastern or Western approaches: one may be able to appreciate correspondences one hadn't been aware of before (as different as the two approaches may remain). So what more can one ask? For something that works.
A key missing element was a consideration of a science that has identifies deadly faults in both religions and psychotherapy, namely radical behaviorism. Radical behavorism in its criticism of fictitious explanations undermines Freudianism and Buddhism. Unlke radical behaviorim, psychotherapy apes religion and so doesn't add much in a modern, scientific way. Why continue to try solutions that have failed for millenia when a modern understanding of the probem of the self has emerged from behaviorism. "Basic bewilderment" can be seen for what it is, the product of bad ways at explaining oneself and one's behavior. Real scientific advance now seems possible (and in much less time) to help people to an extent that Buddhism and psychotherapy have not been able to. As to morality, recent freedoms have enabled atheists to public declarely themselves and it has been possible to see that their moral behavior may match, if not exceed, that of religous people.
When I read B.F. Skinner's "Science and Human Behavior", I realized that there were productive alternatives to religious authorities and speculative psychologies. Radical behaviorism is fairly new so it hasn't had the time to develop practices that religions and even psychotherapy has had, but I'm beginning to realize that investing in this modern, scientific effort holds more promise than resort to relgion and (Freudian) psychotherapy, however captivating that may have been (intentionally) designed to be. Leifer should move on: he thinks things through well and presents well, but he is attached to obsolete material. Radical behaviorism could use people of his caliber to help it develop further.
Note: I've written some recent reviews on Buddhism and Dzogchen. I had read those books before but didn't review them because I felt they were way beyond me. Recently my views changed, in part due to my exposure to radical behaviorism and the promise it holds. I felt less intimidated by religious traditions and certainly by speculative psychological systems,so I decided to reread and review some of those books, such as this one. I believe at this time that it is important not to be content or impressed that an author writes well or presents a viewpoint clearly but that they are choosing the right material to write about. A book like this one, covering a psychological approach (Freudian) all but discredited and a relgious approaches (such as Christianity and Buddhism) which even Leifer admits have had serious problems, seems a poor way to spend one's time if one has the skills that Leifer has. Dummies like me just write reviews and manage to get by, but I expect more of someone like Leifer, who, despite my concerns about his subject matter, shines thru for his smarts and compassion.
Full Marks.......2005-08-20
This is a terrific book. I have not read such a clear, liberating account of the causes of anxiety and depression. I highly recommend this.
An Essential Book for All People Who Care.......2005-08-13
This is the most profound book I have ever studied. During the past 20 years I have invested my time and money in books that detail the human condition and the causes and possible relief of our pain and suffering. This book takes an objective stance and casts a reality check on politics, religion, and many other belief systems we employ in our societies in order to alleviate pain and suffering and to strive for those things that can bring us joy and everlasting happiness. This book has helped me to better understand the belief systems of those around me and to have more empathy and compassion knowing that we all have our own 'happiness projects'. Essentially we're all on an unknown journey. Our Happiness Projects are our coping mechanisms. This book gives me comfort in knowing that we're all doing the best we can do given what we know.
A clear view of Buddism........2004-01-22
Clearly written, easy to understand and put into practice. After reading over100 books on eastern ideas, this book struck a cord in me(a light went on).
Excellent Book.......2000-01-20
Dr. Leifer, a psychiatrist, borrows from his Buddhist practice and his
clinical experience to offer profound insights into the sources of
anxiety and depression in the West. He makes a compelling case that
the projects we develop to make us happy become the sources of our
unhappiness. Meditation can help reduce the three "poisons"
that make us miserable--desire, aversion, and ignorance.

Fun!.......2004-09-15
I'm not sure if this is better than the original book, or if I just enjoyed it more because I'm familiar with the basic premise and characters. At any rate, Noble Causes is exactly what it's billed as-a fun, soap-opera-y book about a family of superheroes. It's a light read, but quite well written. I reread the first book after finishing this one, and appreciated the whole thing more because a lot of elements in the first book gained a whole new meaning when you know what's GOING to happen.
That said, Family Secrets stands fine on its own, and also feels complete. That is to say, it ends at what feels like a logical point, rather than half-way through a story like a lot of graphic novels seem to. Don't worry, it does have a great cliffhanger...something I've been dying to know since the first book gets PARTLY revealed...

Good- Artwork Inconsistant.......2004-10-12
Noble Causes: In Sickness and in health is a romantic soap opera starring: you guessed it- super heroes! The primary romance is the romance between Race- and plain Jane bookstore owner Liz Donnelly. Add a few classic soap opera twists, including a blacksheep brother, a cheating spouse and a mystery baby and you have Noble Causes.
I enjoyed the story for the most part, although to be honest it was somewhat light. What I didn't like was the art. At times it was well drawn...Other times the art looked like the scrawling of a ten year old. Some characters were hardly recognizable from story to story- you'd think the artist had no reference to work from.
Still the story was fun, and the concept cool. Worth reading, but the artwork lacks consistancy which cost this story a star.
Yeah, there's some soap opera, but I really like this series.......2004-03-09
This series is about the dysfunctional superhero celebrity family of the Nobles. It begins when Liz, a normal woman, is going to marry into the family...then all kinds of drama begins. There are a lot of family and relationship issues going on in this series, and, yes, it may seem soap opera-ish to some. But ultimately it's a fun comic book that hasn't gained as much popularity as it deserves. I actually want to read the rest of the series after having read this trade paperback. It has drama, it has superheroes, it has comedy, it has action, it has romance...
Heroes meet soap operaýSoap Opera wins!.......2004-01-21
A "normal" woman marries into the Noble family, the world's most famous family of superheroes and complications ensue. Jay Faerber works in all the soap opera conceits, the cheating spouses, surprise pregnancies, murderous family members, and even that old SF stand by, the brain transplant. While Faerber's stated goal is to take a different look at the genre, he really only succeeds in transferring it to the realm of daytime dramas. With art by group of raw talents, NOBLE CAUSES is not so much different as it is derivative.
Book Description
The hits just keep coming for the Noble family. Half of them are stranded on a hostile alien world; and back on Earth, an escaped mental patient who claims to be Doc Noble is headed straight for Noble Manor! All this, plus Zephyr finally goes into labor.
Book Description
Noble affinities were the essence of power in sixteenth-century France. This is the first book to analyze the development of a noble following during the whole course of the Wars of Religion. The Guise were one of the greatest families of Christendom and this is the first substantial work on them for a century. In Normandy, a stronghold of Protestantism, they built a formidable ultra-Catholic party that ultimately challenged the monarchy. This book breaks new ground by discussing all groups in political society, from international dynastic politics to peasant revolt.

First Time Noble Causes.......2006-05-16
I am not a Noble Causes fan. I have never read another issue before. The reason I bought this particular issue because I read that Invincible (another image character) had a guest appearance. (As a note for other Invincible/Kirkman fans, Invincible appears for 2 panels and has no lines or real involvement to the story. Brit also makes a slightly less brief appearance. And Robot, Atom Eve, Rexsplode, and DupliKate are there with Invincible.)
On to the comic. Having never read Noble Causes before I think that this book seemed to do a good job of introducing you to most of the main characters and giving you a glance at what they are like. You get an idea of who has a problem with who and who tolerates who. Since it's made of all short stories though it felt like there might not be to much substance for long time readers who are probably already familiar with the characters. Most of the short stories were good, I especially liked the first one and seeing Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker's almost Hellboy like short on Krennick was very entertaining. (As I'm a Kirkman fan, I may be a little biased) I have to say that the Zephyr short story was my least favorite. It was extremely tragic and felt a bit pointless to me. I would go as far as to say it was simply for shock value.
Again over all a good read. There's good artwork and good writers. A good read for someone new to the Nobles but as I said previously there might not be enough substance for long time readers to really enjoy.
