Book Description

Developed for the Israel military forces and battle tested in real-life combat, Krav Maga has gained an international reputation as an easy-to-learn yet highly effective art of self-defense. Clearly written and extensively illustrated, Complete Krav Maga details every aspect of the system including dozens of hand-to-hand combat moves, over 20 weapons defense techniques and a complete physical conditioning workout program.

All the moves are described in depth from beginning Yellow Belt to advanced Black Belt, yet they are easy to learn because one of Krav Maga's strengths is its simplicity. Based on the principle that it is best to move from defense to attack as quickly as possible, Complete Krav Maga offers fast-escape maneuvers from attacks and holds. It then follows them up with specific counterattacks, including punches, kicks and throws.

The authors show how anyone (big or small, man or woman) can practice self defense by using Krav Maga to protect weak spots, exploit an assailant's vulnerabilities and turn the attacker’s force against him. Complete Krav Maga teaches the reader how to get in shape, gain confidence and feel safer and more secure every day.

John Whitman and Darren Levine did an amazing job with this book. They are two of the best Krav instructors and to be able to learn from them, is to learn how to do Krav the safe and effective way. They do a great job of translating what they do and teach in the classroom into this book.

This is a great book to highlight the Krav Maga style. I've never studied this art before, but the book is so well done, I think that I could learn a lot with just a partner to practice with. Highly recommended !!

4 out of 5 stars A Good Basic Guide, Just as the Authors Intended !.......2007-09-12

I just finished reading "Complete Krav Maga" by Darren Levine and John Whitman for the second time in as many weeks and I have to say that it is a very well done book covering the basic techniques needed to advance through the ranks of Krav Maga from yellow belt all the way up to and including brown belt. However, having said that, it should be noted that as the author so firmly states, "Krav Maga is not a martial art, it is a form of self-defense."

I only have one small complaint with this book and that is that in one respect, it is no different from the vast majority of books out there that try and teach you too many things in one volume and don't spend enough time on each individual technique. This one small detractor is greatly overshadowed by the sheer amount of good solid information that it does include, of which the importance of principles being stressed as far more important than technique itself is perhaps the most profound.

The authors have provided some very good basic information on the execution of techniques, although not as detailed as they should be, which is understandable in the context of what the authors were trying to get across to the readers. It should be noted though that this book is intended to be used as guide for the reader to learn and develop the self-defensive skills that they will be able to utilize effectively in a self-defense situation, not a certain number of techniques set in stone to advance to the next rank.

Although I enjoyed the vast majority of the material presented in this book, I personally liked the sections dealing with various ground fighting skills and defenses against various weapons the most. Another notable section of this book was the various training examples that were presented throughout.

Now I don't know if I am going to offend a bunch of people here or not, but my personal take on Krav Maga is similar to that of Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do, in that it borrows those techniques from various systems that prove to be most effective and combine them with a central "core" style and then add an outstanding set of principles to create an effective means of self-defense.

This is a very worth while book to purchase if you are interested in learning how to defend yourself against a variety of attacks. However, as I stated earlier, if you want to really learn how to correctly execute the individual techniques, you will need to purchase some additional books. Here are the ones I would recommend to improve your punching and kicking skills.

5 out of 5 stars Simple is best on the street.......2007-08-30

Good description of krav maga. I trained to green belt in krav, and found this book mirrored what I learned. The descriptions and pictures are clear and easy to understand.

On the street, simple is best. When the adrenaline hits you in a real fight, your limbs might go "hard", your vision becomes tunnel, you might have things speed up, or slow down. You might get "holes" in your perception. Krav maga helps you train to fight through all that. It is one of the best martial arts for real street survival against all types of attacker scenarios. It is the only martial art I know of that takes adrenaline (a HUGE factor) into account, not just in theory, but also in training.

I have a couple minor "issues" with krav maga, but that is only because I don't do the art anymore (I made it to green belt and even trained a couple times with the authors). I now do Filipino arts and some of the Asian stuff. I do think that a good Filipino martial artist would give a krav maga person a real hard time to deal with, but that really is not a critique of krav maga, it more saying that kali and the Asian blade arts are really good. For instance, one technique in Asian blade arts is to "draw" the person in, you thrust, but then turn that thrust into a slash, etc. A lot of the drawing and misdirection stuff might defeat a krav maga person. But on the other hand, I think some of the krav stuff would beat kali and those arts. The point is, any art can counter any art, and you can counter anything. There is no such thing as the "perfect", non-counterable move. I just hope people realize this.

Having said that, krav maga is an excellent system. The gun stuff is great, and almost no other martial art deals with guns (!). The authors are very legitimate and very good (I no longer do krav maga, so I don't have any affiliation with the organization).

I love the adrenaline stuff in krav maga. The stuff with multiple attackers, and turning the lights out. All very, very useful.

One other point: krav maga is a military system. The emphasis is on "destroy the target". I think people overlook this when training. In Israel, if I am in the military, and a man runs in with a gun, I HAVE TO attack him: both morally, and because of my uniform. However, for instance, other martial arts give you the option. You might run. In krav maga, just running was never emphasized. I think this "attack at all costs" mentality is both a huge benefit (if there is only one choice, if focuses the mind powerfully, under stress). At the same time, there are situations in which I don't always want to "destroy the target". Maybe running is the best option. I hope that students of krav maga realize that.

To sum up: an excellent book by some very good teachers.

Pictures are filled with full colored pictures. Moves increase in skill level as you read through the book. Great book containing jiu-jitsu coupled with self-defense moves for the street.

3 out of 5 stars Technically well done book, but incomplete.......2007-05-07

I can already here the blood boiling in all the BJJ and MMA people who might read this review, but here goes... this book was really well done as far as the technical aspects of communicating physical movements and tactics in this medium, but overall, the subject matter was incomplete. Having served in the Marine Corps in the early 90's, before the onset of BJJ and having trained in several martial arts over the last 20 years, I really find that the use (or actually, the overuse) of grappling as a self defense and combat style disappointing and frankly a bit scary. BJJ and grappling are wonderful sports and are exciting physical chess matches in the ring, but are limited for real world combat. Consider grappling against multiple opponents or opponents with weapons. I think it definitely has its uses and it needs to be taught to anyone who wants to learn self defense as a citizen or for combat as a police officer or soldier, but it shouldn't be the first thing that pops into your head. If your reflexes are to go straight for grappling, you're missing the first three of the five ranges of fighting (kicking, punching, knees and elbows).

Again, that being said, the material that is in the book is top notch. I just think the author (and the military) needs to address the other ranges in more depth.

5 out of 5 stars All the H2H combat essentials in one book.......2007-04-15

To start, I've probably tossed out more karate books than most of you will ever own. This one is a keeper. A couple reviewers state that this book is mostly Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and it is. I have four Gracie Jiu Jitsu books, and H2H leaves out the sport/ wrestling side of BJJ and teaches just real world combat self defense. The book is easy to understand even if you haven't had previous training. All the techniques are clearly illustrated and when necessary shown from alternate angles. At the bottom of the page is a list of optional techniques and follow ups that can be found elsewhere in the book.
One chapter shows how to defend against knives, handguns and long guns while maintaining control of your own weapon. As a shooter I find this all very useful. Every defensive technique demonstrated is a practical solution to a realistic attack.
If you come from a karate system that is weak on grappling as most traditional systems are, then this is the book you need. One thing that mixed martial arts competition has shown us is that in the real world karate, Kung Fu, Aikido etc. isn't always as effective as we had believed.
It's my opinion that all combat focused martial arts will soon look very much like what is taught in Greg Thompson's H2H. It will look this way because it works.

4 out of 5 stars good for the street.......2007-04-05

I like this book because it shows you grappling techniques and stratige that can be used on the street. It is basiclly Brizillian jujitsu made for the street or combat. The thing I like about it is, you don't need a gei to acomplish the chokes and holds. It mostly teaches how to ground fight. There are not alot of strikes in it. Hardly any at all. But if you already know how to punch and strike you can fill in the dots. I would combine this material with what you already know.

5 out of 5 stars BJJ.......2007-02-04

This book is awesome. If you need a reference book for BJJ moves or just want to learn street efective fighting, then this is the best book you can buy. I have many and this is by far the best. If you think this book is not relivent for street fighting then you've never been in a street fight. AWESOME!!

Product Description

This exact reprint of the U.S. Armys most current field manual on hand-to-hand combat (FM 3-25.150) reflects the first major revision to the Armys close-quarters combat program in a decade. It incorporates the latest training undertaken by Army Rangers with the legendary Gracie family, blending their proven ground fighting tactics with the Armys latest training curriculum to create a unique battlefield form of Brazilian jujitsu. This manual provides instruction in basic and advanced ground fighting along with the entire spectrum of vital close-quarters skills, including vicious takedowns and throws; no-BS punches and kicks; offensive techniques with knives, bayonets, sticks and entrenching tools; standing defenses against armed and unarmed attackers; and group tactics for both lethal and nonlethal situations. Expertise in hand-to-hand combat is one of the fundamental skills of the modern soldier. Whether the task is subduing an angry mob or fending off a sudden assault by a knife-wielding enemy, todays fighting men must know how to instantly respond and prevail in violent situations where they cannot resort to firearms. This field manual shows them how. 8 1/2 x 11, softcover, photos, illus., 272 pp. ISBN 1-58160-448-3

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Extremely Practical Method.......2007-03-22

One reviewer wrote that (in his opinion) ground fighting is not practical. I would be willing to bet that this person has never been in a real fight. MOST fights end up on the ground and if you can control your opponent you can defeat (kill) him. As far as the other raters assertaion that "submission" is somehow less than ideal in unarmed combat, I assure you that once you dislocate your opponents shoulder, knee of hip you can kill him at your leisure.

This reviewer also made it sound like this method of combatives is complicated. I will agree that looking at pictures in a book to learn this method can be difficult but you have to remember this is a reprint of a United States Army Field Manual. We use FM's to augment knowlegde that we already have through institutional training. If you have been trained in this method the FM becomes a refresher.

I have black belts in both Tae Kwan Do and Karate and can honestly tell you that a "grappler" who is experienced can defeat a puncher or kicker easily.

My Soldiers (I am a First Sergeant of Paratroopers in the United States Army) all easily learned this form of combatives and are much better preparred for combat because of it.

I only gave the manual three stars because this book is not for everybody. First you need the training and if you have that this is a great refresher.

1 out of 5 stars Rolling around on the ground with razor wire and shrapnel? Oh please...........2005-10-28

The premise of the 2002 (current as I write) edition of the U.S. Army Combatives manual is that military hand to hand combat starts with ground fighting or grappling and ends when someone's teammate shows up. Let's address the explicit and implicit fallacies one at a time.

Ground fighting for soldiers? The odds favor urban environments for this sort of engagement (short lines of sight, extremely complicated terrain with large numbers of hiding places, etc). In a war torn city, with broken glass, scrap metal, razor wire, rusted re-bar, etc does it make sense to roll around on the ground with an opponent and hope your teammate shows up before his does?

Ground fighting/grappling techniques are high coordination and multiple step movements. This makes it difficult for a student to do one correct repetition of a technique, much less the two to three thousand repetions that it takes to really internalize a technique. When you are trying to train hundreds of young Americans at once, simple has a clear value.

Ground fighting allows for competition in units. OK, competition certainly motivates most people, but it trains bad habits. In competition, techniques that would be simple and effective against an assailant are not allowed, so you are teaching people to fight 'nice'. If an opponent is determined to inflict serious injury, or is so pumped up on adrenalin or drugs that he/she doesn't care what damage they do, targeting the groin, throat, and eyes is the place to start, not "off limits/a foul".

Note well: sentry removal (silent killing techniques) have been removed from this manual. Politically insensitive, most likely, but for a soldier, the doctrine should teach techniques that could help them escape from being taken captive.

There are several more issues worth addressing here, but I'll leave it with one more.

Most disturbing is the undercurrent in this manual that unarmed combat doesn't really involve hurting an opponent, it's about submission. To allow this sense of fair play does U.S. soldiers a serious disservice. When a soldier faces an enemy, it does him or her no good to have a subconscious belief that their opponent will "submit" before they are incapacitated.

Don't buy this one unless you are interested in UFC fighting or grappling, it has only the most trivial connection to what soldiers need to know. Go for the 1992 edition of FM 21-150, 'Combatives', the Canadian army manual availible through the Canadian government website, or even D'Eliscu's 'Hand To Hand Combat' availible through Amazon.

1 out of 5 stars early impression only.......2005-08-07

Having just started this manual, I'll only comment on two things which I feel is justified because I'm familiar with similar USMC manuals and had some HTH training in the military and civilian life.

Most important so far is that the two men used in the photos depicting the various techniques are both wearing camoflage uniforms. As the Army considers ground fighting and grappling the basic level of training, these two grappling, with their arms and legs intertwined, make it very hard to tell what belongs to whom. It would have been far better if they'd been wearing contrasting clothing. As it is, their bodies blend together in most of the pictures.

The USMC manuals clearly discourage ground fighting and spend little space on it, mainly advising to get up as quickly as possible. The Army ground fighting has a lot of techniques which must be puzzling to some. According to the cover, these are based on Brazilian ju-jitsu and will probably be of most value to those familiar with this form; I'm not qualified to evaluate at my level of skill.

Book Description

If you want to win, and not just survive, in a fight for your life, mind-set is at least as critical as tactics. Here Suarez shows how desire for victory, elimination of uncertainty, situational awareness and willingness to act can give you the mental edge. The perfect companion to Cooper's classic Principles of Personal Defense.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars a must read!.......2006-08-22

This book it's a good upgrade from te "principles of self defense" from Jeff Cooper. Very valuable info in it!

5 out of 5 stars A look at Mind-Set.......2005-06-13

This book is not about how to use a firearm in self-defense. This book is about surviving a deadly encounter. The focus on on the most critical part of self defense - Mental Preparation. This is one of the best and could save your "bacon". If you just want to learn how to shoot look elsewhere. This my favorite of the Suarez books as it really offers helpful insight to provide the right frame of mind to survive. Be aware - the author pulls no punches and is not "PC".

4 out of 5 stars Mental preparation for combat.......2005-01-25

Gabe Suarez, the author of this book is a renowed shooting and tactics instructor. In his former career as a SWAT team member, he has participated in numerous fights and several shooting incidents (I believe the exact number is four shootings).

This book is similar to Principles of personal defence by Jeff Cooper. In this book, Suarez handles the mental aspects of fighting, based on his personal experiences and those of his trainees. Rather than instructing how to use weapons the most efficient way, he tries to explain how the mind works in a life-threatening situation. Instead of tactics, you'll learn how the fear and stress change your performance, and how to prepare for a potentially lethal encounter.

Suarez advocates aggressive response to a threat, and man's right to defend himself even with lethal force, if necessary. The instruction he gives in the book fall into the same category, and his attitude is that unless you want to do things the way he instructs, it's the same as hiding your head into sand hoping the adversary does not attack you. As in other books by Suarez, his way is the only way to conduct business. I'm not arguing the facts, and he definitely has more combat experience than I do, but I dislike the way he forces his opinions to the readers. On the other hand, if man has proved his views correct in multiple gunfights, that may have a reinforcing effect on your outlook.

The things discussed in the book are not new, as almost every book devoted to self defense shooting has at least a chapter on mental issues. However, this book gives the most complete treatment of the subject I have read. It's sad that Suarez has such one-sided approach to the subject. However, with it's flaws, this book is definitely recommended reading to anyone who is interested in self defence.

5 out of 5 stars This book will become a classic for personal protection.......2004-10-09

Having been a small arms and tactics instructor for a number of years now and always a student to the martial arts, I highly recommend this book. It is truly a landmark book that is written with a hard hitting yet effective and efficient style that anyone can read and learn from. But more importantly than just learn from, but live by.

The more a student of personal protection learns and developes the more they realize that it is not the gun or the knife, etc but the mind that is the final weapon. Mindset is the most important element in a fight. Mr. Suarez explains this in terms that are most enlightening. I have personally lent my copy of this book to a number of soldiers who are deploying to Iraq, street cops, students of martial arts, and everyday house wives. All simply say, that this book is an important part of their development by letting them see their strength and weaknesses. They all agree that by reading this book they have have a deeper understanding of what it takes to not only survive but to win. That is an important difference.

This is one of the only books I own that I read on a regular basis to ensure I am "getting my mind right".

4 out of 5 stars Very good, needs a bit of polishing!.......2007-01-25

As a Student of Geoff's I know his passion for the subject. I had heard most of the stories FROM him during class. This book is a treasure trove of information about some well known and not so well known Combatives instructors of the 20th Century. The only thing this book suffers from is the lack of editorial input. I say this because there are some small but glaring errors in the quotes section, that an editor should have spotted.

Both the Authors are worth the effort to learn from

5 out of 5 stars Unique content. Well worth the price. Great bio's. Good advice. Great read. .......2006-12-15

This book is unique in its content. It devotes anywhere from two to 10 pages to each of 32 different "combative masters" of the 20th Century (not counting the authors, who surely also qualify to be included as subjects themselves). Much of the material is from personal contacts or interviews. This gives it a personal touch and makes you feel like an insider when you read it.

There may be a few inaccuracies (at least that's what a couple of other reviewers say), but that is just what you get when you collect personal accounts from people close to the action. History is full of conflicting stories. OK, so the bibliography is not in alphabetical order (as pointed out by another reviewer). Who cares! I didn't buy it for the bibliography; plus the bibliography is only four pages long so you can find anything easily anyway. Another reviewer points out an error in attributing a quote to JFK, but Simpson's Contemporary Quotations revised Edition (ISBN 0062701371) attributes the same quote to Kennedy, so the authors are not alone in this error.

There is much to be learned about how to live and fight when you read each of the short biographies. It's the sort of book a father could give his son to set a better example than he is capable of setting. I enjoyed reading the bio's as much as I enjoy watching "Biography" on A&E. Except this book clearly packs a punch A&E can't deliver.

One of the other reviewers says to "save your $$." Well, I recommend you save up 10 of your $$ and buy this book with them! At $10 this book is worth it even just for the few photos of the pioneers: Applegate, Fairburn, Sykes, Nelson, Underwood, O'Neill, Biddle and so on. I would have happily paid three or four times this price to get this book.

In addition to the 32 bio's there are about ten other short sections on assorted topics of interest. These include James Webb's Principles of Leadership, the Ranger Creed, a speech by Applegate, and information about the International Close Combat Instructors Association (which is currently headed by the first author).

I have headed a couple of groups of people (including a group in a big investment business in the Finance industry in the UK). Much of the leadership information in here carries over to the business world. So, although the target audience is clearly people interested in combat and the history of combat, I also recommend this book to business people in positions of leadership who are looking for leadership advice. The hierarchy in a business is not that different from the ranks in the military. Forget the stupid self help books for business people and read about soldiers who had to lead men into combat. I would not carry business advice into combat, but I sure as hell would carry combat advice into business!

All in all, this is a unique collection of information that brings to life more than 30 combative masters from the 20th Century. It's the sort of information that were it not written down now, might have disappeared into history within only a decade or two. As such, this book serves a purpose both in entertaining and informing the reader, but also in capturing a large slice of history that might otherwise be lost.

2 out of 5 stars Good Idea For A Book But Needs Work.......2006-06-26

This was a much needed book, but the research was pretty shoddy. Attributing a quote from Teddy Roosevelt to John Kennedy is a minor one, but identifying Geoffrey Keyes as a commander of the 1st Special Service Force? It makes me wonder what else is incorrect. The writing is confusing with the lyrics to the Ballad of the Green Berets making an appearance for some odd reason. The bibliography isn't even in alphabetical order. Like I said, this is a great idea for a book, but the author needs to go back to the drawing board.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2006-04-12

This book cuts to the chase and highlights the pioneers of military hand-to-hand combat. The book is indepth, concise and well written. A must for all CQC instructors, military personnel and soldiers of the Armed Forces.

    4 out of 5 stars What's inside.......2007-02-18

This book doesn't seem to have a search inside feature enabled. So here's what is inside (plus my little summary for each chapter):

    Table of Contents:
    About the Author, Foreword, etc

"Chapter 1: Developing the combative mind"
Levels of awareness, willingness to use force, focusing on simple, street-proven techniques, etc.

"Chapter 2: NLP Skill Development and the Way of the Jedi"
Not as weird as it sounds. NLP stands for Neuro-linguistic programming. This is all about modeling your practice after experts, using mental imagery, and understanding the thought process that occurs during combat.

"Chapter 3: Legalities in Using Force For Personal Defence"
Three pages long. You better have darn good reason if you kill somebody, or you will end up in prison. Does not address state CCW laws at all.

"Chapter 4: Personal Fitness for Combatives"
Two pages long. Summary: get in shape and learn hand-to-hand combat - the gun can't solve everything.

"Chapter 5: Other Things to Think About"
Six pages about the necesity of hand-to-hand combat, First Aid kits, knives and defensive driving.

"Chapter 6: Selecting the Personal Defense Hangun"
The book is only about semi-autos. No revolvers. It goes on to give advice on selecting the proper size, grip, finish, sights and caliber.

"Chapter 7: Individualizing the Personal Defense Handgun"
A reprint of one of the author's magazine articles about how he customzized his gun. This chapter is meant to open your eyes to the fact that you can have a gunsmith drill, grind, sand, cut and otherwise modify your gun to be your perfect weapon. Does not discuss modification options - just what he personally did to his gun.

"Chapter 8: What is This Thing Called Stopping Power?"
Discussion of caliber, as well as the advice that if you _know_ you are going to a gun fight, bring a rifle or a shotgun, not a handgun.

    "Chapter 9: Safety"
    One and a half pages.

"Chapter 10: Technique, Physiology, and the Continuous Motion Principle"
Simple is Good. Learn simple techniques that reuse the same basic motions for many types of activities.

    "Chapter 11: Getting a Grip"
Short chapter on the proper ways to hold a handgun.

"Chapter 12: Ready Positions, Range Safety, and Getting the Gun on Target Fast!"
Discussion on several ready positions, and how to get your gun from ready position to shooting position quickly and accurately

"Chapter 13: The Combat Stance, or How to Avoid Falling Down During a Gunfight!"
    Short chapter on stance

"Chapter 14: Carrying the Handgun: Holster Skills and Holster Selection"
Fifteen or so pages on holsters and drawing from concealed carry.

    "Chapter 15: Keep it Running"
How to reload and clear jams.

    "Chapter 16: Going Tactical"
Selecting cover, turning corners, moving while shooting.

"Chapter 17: Dealing with Multiple Threats"
Prioritizing and dealing with multiple targets

    "Chapter 18: Night Work"
    Night eyesight and flashlight use

    "Chapter 19: Automobiles and You"
Gunfighting from within or near your car, plus dealing with attempted carjacking.

"Chapter 20: Extreme Close Quarters Shooting"

    "Chapter 21: Keeping Sharp"
    How and What to Practice

Chapter 22: Putting it All Together
    Brief closing chapter

    Hope that helps.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-02-10

Spaulding shows how some of the most current techniques and training are lacking for real life scenarios. While it is important to learn how to shoot, it is more important to learn how to react. The first 30 pages are probably the most important any shooter should read in their lives. Mind set is the most important aspect of shooting. If you can draw the weapon in under a second, it will do you no good if you dont have the commitment to fire.

    4 out of 5 stars Needs More!.......2006-07-23

This title is much like the author's other title "Defensive Living". While it is good for what it is and what it contains there is much that's missing. For a title like "Handgun Combatives" I was expecting to see material that's beyond the norm for firearms books. I had expected to read about close quarter deployment, integration of empty-hands, retention, force-on-force drills, etc. However, what I got was some very good basic concepts and sound advice on handling, holsters, ect. However it was nothing that can't be found in other books on the topic of defensive firearms. I would recoomend this title for those interested in learning as much as possible about combat shooting but I wouldn't recommend it as the only source.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent overview without pushing a "style".......2006-05-24

Unlike many other writers, Spaulding does not push a particular style or technique of shooting. His approach is to follow what the body does naturally. The discussion of neuro-linguistic programming and the continuous motion principle were especially interesting and worth further exploration.

My only complaint was his overt advocacy of the Beamhit training device, but that was only a few pages. Overall, this is an excellent read and well worth the purchase price.

4 out of 5 stars Very good book about handgun fighting.......2006-05-18

Dave Spaulding is a veteran police officer from Dayton Ohio, and has over 25 years of experience, from which, 12 years in SWAT unit.
Spaulding has also written over 500 articles concerning the use of weapons in live situation.

In my opinion yhis perhaps the best book that I have read on the subject. It covers all aspects, starting from selecting the proper equipment, ending in psychological aspects of armed confrontations.
Spaulding covers handgin fighting in low light conditions wery well, a topic that in my opinion has been neglected too much.
The negative thing in this book was that it had very few pictures in it. In my opinion some of the concepts and techniques presented in the book are hard to understand since there isn't any photos or picturres to clarify them.
Anyway, this book is must for those working as a police officer, in military or armed security. It doesn'matter wether you are a pro r a beginner, this book has something for you.

    Book Description

The preface to this U.S. Army manual (FM 3-25.150) states: "This field manual contains information and guidance pertaining to rifle-bayonet fighting and hand-to-hand combat. The hand-to-hand combat portion of this manual is divided into basic and advanced training. This manual serves as a guide for instructors, trainers, and soldiers in the art of instinctive rifle-bayonet fighting." According to the manual: "Hand-to-hand combat is an engagement between two or more persons in an empty-handed struggle or with hand-held weapons such as knives, sticks, or projectile weapons that cannot be fired. Proficiency in hand-to-hand combat is one of the fundamental building blocks for training the modern soldier. Soldiers must be prepared to use different levels of force in an environment where conflict may change from low intensity to high intensity over a matter of hours. Many military operations, such as peacekeeping missions or noncombatant evacuation, may restrict the use of deadly weapons. Hand-to-hand combatives training will save lives when an unexpected confrontation occurs. More importantly, combatives training helps to instill courage and self-confidence. With competence comes the understanding of controlled aggression and the ability to remain focused while under duress. Training in combatives includes hard and arduous physical training that is, at the same time, mentally demanding and carries over to other military pursuits. The overall effect of combatives training is the culmination of a successful physical fitness program, enhancing individual and unit strength, flexibility, balance, and cardiorespiratory fitness, and building personal courage, self confidence, self-discipline, and esprit de corps."

As such, this manual provides a unique, heavily illustrated training manual for a number of hand-to-hand combat techniques. Chapter Three deals with basic ground-fighting techniques. "Basic ground-fighting techniques build a fundamental understanding of dominant body position, which should be the focus of most combatives training before moving on to the more difficult standing techniques. Ground fighting is also where technique can most easily be used to overcome size and strength. Before any killing or disabling technique can be applied, the soldier must first gain and maintain dominant body position. The leverage gained from dominant body position allows the fighter to defeat a stronger opponent. An appreciation for dominant position is fundamental to becoming a proficient fighter because it ties together what would otherwise be a long confusing list of unrelated techniques. If a finishing technique is attempted from dominant position and fails, the fighter can simply try again. If, on the other hand, a finishing technique is attempted from other than dominant position and fails, it will usually mean defeat."

Attacks include the collar choke, single wing choke, straight arm bar, arm lock, guillotine choke, scissors sweep, Captain Kirk, ankle grab/knee push, triangle choke, knee mount, leg attacks, straight ankle lock, and figure-four ankle lock. Striking, called an integral part of all actual fighting, includes pass the guard with strikes, striking from side control, defending against strikes, and more. Takedowns and throws are covered in detail.

Later chapters cover handheld weapons using the bayonet or knife, which "may be the ideal weapon to dispatch the enemy." Field-expedient weapons are discussed, including the entrenching tool, three-foot sticks, and six-foot pole. Standing defense techniques against unarmed and armed opponents are reviewed. Restrictive force scenarios include two against one, three against two, one against two, and two against three.

    4 out of 5 stars Comatives.......2006-12-01

Ok, now this guy E. M. Van Court apparently has not been through the actual Army training. We do not train to submit, but we submit in training if that makes any sence to you, big guy. We teach a soldier to submit while training against another friendly soldier so that we do not injure a guy needed in combat. We do realize that in a combat situation you would not stop with submission, you would continue until you break that arm or snap his neck regardless of the fact the he might tap you 1,000 times. Also, ground fighting techniques do not make up the complete Modern Army Combatives Program just the first 2 levels becuase they are the easiest to learn. As you go you learn to work in reverse order from the ground up. So before you blast something you know nothing about, get true facts from the scource. This book is helpful but I always reccomend a trainer becuase books do not fully illustrate a movement and they do not play out in your head the way they should but if you know the moves then this is a great refresher tool to help you stay on top of your moves thats why I gave it 4.

1 out of 5 stars Rolling around on the ground with razor wire and shrapnel? Oh please..........2005-10-31

Remember, this manual is design for realistic fighting...Servicemen in action. I recommend this book as a great source of knowledge, techniques and visual graphics.

This was a great book to read and the information here is pretty straight forward. This book deals with close quarters hand to hand combat. This book will teach you certain pressure points, joint manipulation & locks, precise places to hit the human body & throws. This book will also show you knife & gun disarms which could save your life someday. If you don't know much about the world of military combatives this would be the book to get. Some of the material seems to be outdated and the copyright on it seemed older. This is the reason I did not give it 5 stars. We all need to remember that violence in the streets or at the workplace is very common these days. You need to be prepared with some form of self defense and you'll get it with this book.
