Wolf's Rain.......2005-06-18
I tell you now from the words of Red Moon, from the great spirit was born the wolf and man became his messenger, in other words the human race was created from wolves, or so says the author of the Book of The Moon.
Man is the real killer........2005-01-10
Brother Wolf: A Forgotten Promise starts off with an emotional "letter" from wolves to men, focusing on how humans and wolves used to live together in harmony, and how men are now killers, of wolves and other creatures. The letter ends with 'I do not think I know you anymore.' It is highly emotional, and nearly made me cry!
After that, the book switches to its true form...a book with captivating text and even better photos of wolves, taken ina areas where they are very elusive and have lots of foliage to be hidden among.
Jim Brandenburg, a very well-known wildlife photographer and the author of multiple wolf books, even goes far enough to explain his first encounter with wolves and how he felt at that time. The book is highly educational, but also very touching.
Overall, the book has great text with even greater photographs, and is definitely a good read. The high price, however, is quite a problem. But if you like wolves, and if you're willing to pay the price, definitely buy this book. It's excellent.
We are the Wolf!.......2002-12-21
Jim Brandenburg succinctly captures the essence of the wolf. The wolf has been so unfairly persecuted throughout our history; due on no small part to ranchers. Incredible photographs, this book will make you a wolf lover if you aren't already. Incredible text and photos!!!!
wonderful book for wolf lovers.......2001-06-23
This book had drown my attention at the very first sight, as I had been trying to find a good book with lots wolf photos for ages and fail at almost every bookshop I went to. The photos in the book are magnificent, also other then wolves, there are wonderful photos of landscape and other wildlife.
I'm really excited to read this book!.......2001-01-05
I know this isn't really a review, but I'm so excited to read/look at the pictures in this book (I just ordered it) I just had to say something. Wolves are my favorite animals and it always makes me a little angery when people talk about them as vicious man-eaters, because they're not. This book really looks like it sets the record strait. I'm really looking forward to reading this book!

Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2007-08-31
If you haven't seen the DVD (Public TV?) program of this project, you should-great insights into what Brandenburg was after as a photographer-the great and the struggles. WOnderful book and photos!
A Nice Conceit.......2004-11-29
It's a nice conceit. A great outdoor photographer sets for himself the task to taking one, but only one, photograph each and every day for an entire season.
One can see all kinds of implications. Once the photographer finds a subject he must get it right the first time because he isn't allowed a second chance. Exposure, focus, composition - everything must be right and as good as he can get it. Moreover he is continually in peril. Should he pass by a good shot in the morning in expectation of a better shot in the afternoon? And what happens when no better shot is in the camera as sunset approaches? We can easily believe Jim Brandenburg when he says that the exercise was a transforming experience.
But the question for viewers of this book is whether the pictures are a transforming experience for us. Unfortunately, they were not for me.
I understand that some of the pictures were bound to be underexposed or out of focus. Plants blow in the wind; animals move. But while I examined the photographs in this book, I also looked at other work by Brandenburg. These other collections were always quite impressive, providing new ways of looking at the world. Many of the pictures in "Chased by the Light" showed a keen sensibility for the light. The silhouettes of loons and a small island with trees against the backlight of a clouded dawn were breathtaking. The photograph of a raven's feather against a lichen background with a few beaded drops of water on the feather caught my eye.
But for every great photograph, there was one that was pedestrian and one that was discardable. I certainly didn't need to see an out-of-focus mink or trees in the forest with no true subject.
To be fair to Brandenburg, this project was apparently not undertaken for publication but rather as an exercise for his own development. It was his editor who wanted to publish after seeing the photographs. To the editor's eye, at least, the pictures were enlightening and well worth the effort.
The greatest value of this book was not in the photographs but in the speculation in which I engaged about why this book was not outstanding. Is photography a stochastic process with each photograph taken possibly leading to an even greater photograph? Did forcing himself to elect when to take his daily picture cause Brandenburg to sacrifice opportunities, or even limit his willingness to take risks. Does the order of presentation of photographs have synergistic effects, which were lost, because this book almost demanded only chronological order? Does forcing the viewer to look at pictures that would otherwise be discards detract from the impact of good pictures?
For me this book was conceptual art. I found the idea of the task transformed my view of photography. The pictures themselves did not.
Challenge Achieved with Grace.......2004-05-17
I gave this book to my parents several years ago and still leaf slowly through its pages whenever visiting their home in northern Minnesota. For amateurs and professionals alike, his is a fascinating photographic concept: your own property? a favorite park? your family? or pet? a holiday?
I normally hesitate to use this word, but...profound........2002-07-09
I'm a verbal type; I'd rather read a beautifully written description of a frozen lake than stare at a picture of it anytime. Even knowing that, my mother gave me this book several years ago, and I fell in love. I sat with it for hours, seeing, dreaming, and I still take it down often to do the same again. The photographer, Jim Brandenburg, set himself the challenge of taking only one photograph each day for three months, in the boreal forest where he makes his home. The result is a portrait of life as many of us can never experience it: not just "calendar shots," but pictures that show the cruelty of man, the certainty of death, the very simple beauty of a single bright leaf burning on the dark, still waters of an evening pond. Some photos are amazing in themselves and some seem ordinary in the extreme, but it is important to take them as a whole, and see what you learn from the journey.
Old fashioned and wonderful.......2002-05-30
It's so more agreable to have this engagement calendar on your desk than a modern and dull looking electronic device. Use an old fountain pen to take your notes, and wait till the ink is dry before turning the page! Wonderful pictures under your eyes every day of the year! You can escape and image yourself so far from the busy and noisy modern world. I'm waiting for the 2003 edition.

A very enjoyable read.......2000-05-15
I recommend this book to anyone interested in the middle ages and/or architecture, it provides the reader with good background information on the construction process and its history. Numerous first hand accounts are presented, along with a great number of color illustrations to guide the reader and liven the work up, usually a couple per page. It also includes a long reference section in the back of different primary documents for further study. The only downside is that it is only an introductory guide, so it does not delve too specifically into the construction process. It does, however, provide a great backdrop for further learning, and was very entertaining the whole way through.
Book Description

Balancing The Scales of Nature.......2002-11-20
A study in the perserverance and dedication of a group of people to bring the wolf back to its own enviroment in the wildernesses of Yellowstone Montanna. Full of information this book will elate you as well as sadden you, but the winner here of course is the wolf who once more runs free on his land.
Excellent overview of the wolf's history & current issues.......2002-09-02
Jim Brandenberg always brings the wolf into our homes vividly and with great skill through his photographs, and in this book, these exquisite photos are paired up with the informative writing of Stephen Swinburne. Swinburne covers an excellent range of topics in this short (but highly-informative) book, including the history of the wolf's extermination in this country, early conservationists, wolf behavior and social structure, myth-busting, the Yellowstone project, and the wolf's future prospects.
He brings in quotes and information from Leopold, Mech, Bangs, Askins, and many other notable figures in the wolf conservation movement to give correct facts and information. I wouldn't call this a book for younger children; it's written at perhaps a teenager's level, and younger children might find the statistics and assorted other information boring. However, Swinburne does cover the bittersweet story of wolves Numbers Nine and Ten, which personalizes the struggles wolves today face.
Swinburne manages to succinctly cover most of the important issues in this relatively brief book (about a half hour's read, perhaps 45 minutes,) and it's a great way to educate yourself or someone else on the basics of wolf conservation. Highly-recommended!
What a great book!.......2000-07-29
I just took a look at this book and was so impressed. The subject is fascinating, of course, but I'm especially taken with the clear, cogent writing, the terrific quotes, and the truly remarkable photographs. I definitely recommend this for any kid (or adult, for that matter) with an interest in wildlife.
a thoroughly moving natural history lesson for all ages.......2000-06-07
My 7 year old and I read this book together recently and I think that I learned as much as she did.
I knew about reintroduction of wild wolves into Yellowstone but this book told the whole story. Get ready to be impressed with personal sagas of determination and bravery on the part of people who care about wild things.
In 1973, while on a field trip in Jasper Park, Alberta, I saw two wild wolves (a white and a black) bounding and romping in the snow. I will never forget the wildness of that sight. This book is richly illustrated with photographs of wolves that give you a glimpse of that wildness.
Get this book and read it with a child to share what Rachel Carson called that "sense of wonder" that children have. Be prepared to explain why we systematically exterminated the wolf from its range throughout the United States and why we paid people to kill wolf puppies.
This book is a moving, thoughtful lesson in ecology for children of all ages.
Book Description
A monk prays deep in the forest. It looks like he is doing just simple, ordinary tasks, such as chopping wood and and tending to his garden. But as he works he is really growing prayer. The monk prays continually throughout the day and night, and, as the seasons pass, he becomes a holy man.
This delightful, beautifully illustrated book teaches children that no matter what they are doing, or what hour of the day it is, they too, can pray.
Customer Reviews:
wonderful introduction to prayer for toddlers.......2004-11-13
This is currently my 2 1/2 year old son's favorite book. It's a wonderful introduction to the daily cycle of prayers. Very beautifully illustrated. The story is very short and to the point (so that even the youngest child or the child with a short attention span can get through the book easily).
Book Description
61 pages, paperback, color covers, saddle-stitched, 2 maps, 11 action photos, 9 tank & vehicle line drawings, Order of Battle. The history of a gunner in the 4th Company (Panther tanks) / 1st Battalion of Panzer Regiment Wietersheim. The author served as a tank commander and fought in the battles for the Steinau bridgehead (Oder River) in February 1945. An excellent, first hand account of the February battles which ended with the Silesian capital of Breslau being surrounded and the 4th Panzer Army being pushed back. The Brandenburg Division was reduced to the size of a kampfgruppe after this battle and continued to serve under 4th Panzer Army until the end of the war. The battles for the village of Wuhden, Polach, etc. are all here. The author's style of writing is concise but compelling.
Customer Reviews:
Painfully boring, luckily, it is short.......2006-11-03
Reading this book is like reading dry after action reports. All I got out of it was how much ammo they expended on a daily basis. The print is huge so it is good for those who are half blind. It is only about 60 pages so I read it in about 3 hours. It's like they took a chapter from a book like "Panzer Aces" and made another book out of it. Don't waste your money.
An exciting read, but the books are small short paperbacks.......2006-07-23
I have to say I really enjoyed the books, but wished they were longer. The accounts give you a really good feel of what it was like to be a tank gunner in the German army towards the end of the war. Some of the accounts are quite exciting. But the two books are very small paperbacks with very large print. Think of them as more longer magazine articles than books. Some of the photos are duplicated in both so don't buy it for the graphics. I like reading first hand accounts much more so than high level tactical material, and this fit the bill.
Not one of the better reads on the subject.......2006-06-26
This brief review covers both the Feb'45 (volume I) and the Mar-Apr'45 (volume II) booklets.
Okay the editors promo calls it a concise diary of Unteroffizier Eduard Bodenmuller amongst many other things. Until I read it I didn't realise just how concise things were to be and how little of any of the other details would be included.
So as a result I shall keep the review in the same manner
The diary notes are generally dry and unemotional, but they do give the idea on the intensitity of fighting, causalities and supply problems due to the daily tally of rearming each day. Do not expect a "Sven Hassel" style book on combat.
There are several line drawings and B & W photographs, but none of which appear to be from new sources and in fact most of the photographs and line drawings are repeated in the second volume.
Basically while these two small booklets fill another small niche of recording history they are sadly lacking in very much detail and have truely missed out on educating .
I just wish there had been a review to read prior to my purchase of the two booklets so I could have saved my money.
View from the cupola.......2005-01-26
I enjoyed this book, though I would have been disappointed had I paid more for it. It really is the diary of a tank commander in the Brandenburg Division with little embellishment. It covers a period from 1 February through mid March 1945. During this time, the division was engaged in defensive operatons along the Oder Front and Eric Bodenmueller was involved in active combat daily during this period as a Panther tank commander in the 4th Company, Ist Battalion, Panzer Regiment Wietersheim.
The diary chronicles in a straight forward manner, the daily to and fro of operations including local attacks, counter-attacks, defensive operations, security, logistics and maintence. As a tanker, I was quite able to read between the lines of his brief account. When he talks, in a matter of fact manner, of rounds expended and ammunition resupply; I envisioned breaking down ammo crates, unpacking, passing rounds up over the back deck, juggling rounds inside the tank, stowing and re-stowing to get the optimum mix based on round type and anticipated usage. When he talks of reconnecting a thrown track in February on the Oder front in twenty minutes, I can draw on my own experiences of dealing with a track, thrown to the inside on a winters day in Germany. The sun going down, temperature falling and the track starting to freeze into the mud, fortunately I never got to experience that under direct and indirect fire. I know what a tank looks like when it is hit and burns, what people smell like when they are burning and what bodies smell like after several days lying exposed. In his short terse chonicle of the days events, I found immediate empathy.
His last entry describes an action for which he was recommended for the German Cross in Gold. During this action, he and his crew engaged and destroyed 8 Soviet tanks and recovered an abandoned Sturmgeshutz. During this action his tank was hit and damaged, several of his crew members killed, and he and his surviving crew member engaged and destroyed several tanks with hand held weapons. Along with engaging the enemy, he also evacuated his crew members and recovered his tank, as we used to say back in the day, "pretty ballsy thing to do." There is a reason why high honors befall those who are willing to take on and destroy tanks with hand held weapons, tanks are awe inspiring machines on the battlefield and it takes a great deal of nerve to take one on.
What is not in this book is a great deal of detail and reaction. If you don't already know what it feels like to be a tanker and in combat, he really is not going to tell you. The author is apparently a highly experienced NCO, I would have like to read the beginning and the end of the story as well.
Overall, I enjoyed the book and read it in one sitting (good bathroom reading material). The price makes it attractive and it fills a vacant niche. Only in recent years has any real quality material on the end of the war on the Eastern Front become readily available and there is really very little available from this perspective-NCO tank commanders and war from the wide or narrow view finder. I hestate to rate it higher because I would have liked more, it would be a good piece in an anthology or collection.
Book Description
"Packaging Dynamics" serves as an introduction to the dynamic behavior of products and packages in the distribution environment. It presupposes little or no background in shock and vibration. Simple mechanical and mathematical models are used throughout the book to lay a solid groundwork for later discussions of more complicated interactions between products, their packages, and the environments in which they both move.
Customer Reviews:
Coming up from the Catacombs.......2007-03-07
This book gives a fascinating guide to the churches of the city of Rome up to the 7th century. Not only does it show how the architecture developed and how existing buildings were adapted to liturgical use, but also how (not for the last time) the Christian Church became an arm of the state. It is a pity that the publishers did not have the text of the English translation proof-read by a native speaker but, in spite of the fact that it often clunks and is unidiomatic, the meaning is usually perfectly clear. The superb illustrations and copious plans more than make up, however, for the faults of the text and I recommend it very highly.
