Customer Reviews:
Unsatisfactory.......2007-09-27
The book has a great collection of maps; however, sidetracks from major aspects of Egyptian history. The information presented on the 25th Dynasty, is particularly unsatisfactory. Major events like the battle of 701 BC between Egypt's 25th Dynasty and Assyria, which changed map of the middle east, is vaguely mentioned. The information presented is inconsistent and certainly unsatisfactory for the average reader.
Not the most informative book on Egyptian history, but then again it IS an ATLAS!.......2005-11-30
Many people are writing that this book did not satisfy their desire for facts and more in-depth explanations of Egyptian history, and that the book's text is not informative. This book is not meant for that purpose, and is really and truly an atlas. The maps are what matter.
In that reguard it serves its purpose and more. The maps are extremely easy to follow, clearly labelled and idenitified, colorful, and most of all- informative. One can tell so much about a period of history by analyzing a map, particularly several which have trade routes, battle sites, important roads and cultural sites CLEARLY marked. Who could ask for anything more! This atlas is wonderful, and is, I repeat, an atlas.
Anyways? What kind of person sits down and reads an atlas? I mean, seriously, its just a reference book, its not a novel. Its not supposed to tell wonderful stories and dazzle you with vibrant facts, its just maps, and anything else, is extra.
Great aid to study of Ancient Egypt.......2005-10-03
Maps showing the changing boundaries of countries through a period of history are great visual for students of ancient history.
Informative but dull.......2003-09-07
It is a good read for people with recent encountering with Egypt. But I was little appalled because information seemed dull. Book will give you facts and names but there isn't much more. Colorful images will attract your attention but I really believe those images have interesting legend and tales by their own.
Interesting idea.......2002-09-19
This book provides a great deal of information on 3000 years of Egyptian history in an unusual format. The book consists of many single-page essays on a particular topic or period, with the essay on the left side of the page, and the corresponding map on the other side of the page, which illustrates what's going on in the text. It's sort of an interesting way to write a history book of ancient Egypt, and I thought it worked out pretty well. Although not your typical history, it's still an interesting and useful book, especially for getting a quick overview of a particular subject or topic.

Cultural atlas of Ancient Egypt.......2006-03-11
If you are interested in ancient cultures as I am this is a great addition to your studies. It gives you a visual element to what can be just words on a page. If you only have a passing curiosity about Egypt it is a wonderful way to dip your feet in the Nile for just a little while. If you like maps and graphics it is a thrill ride.
A well written and illustrated description of egyptian history.......2005-09-17
This book reads well, in a subject area where turgid prose is the rule. It begins with topical sections giving a good overview, each of which can be read in an hour or two. Then it proceeds on a journey down the length of the Nile. Although I needed to read more specialized books, at the price of turgid prose, to delve deeply into some aspects of Egyptian prehistory, I regret that I had not started with this one. This book will do nicely as the ONLY or the FIRST book on Egypt in one's library, depending upon one's needs. Having read several books on Egypt previously ,which lacked good maps, the topical maps in this book justify the entire expense.
Excellent maps and illustrations.......2005-02-23
As Baines and Malek explained in their introduction, they attempted to make this atlas useful for those readers who might plan to travel to Egypt and visit the ancient sites. The authors made good on this claim by devoting over half of the atlas to a section entitled "A Journey Down the Nile", which provides a survey of ancient sites that are encountered while traveling down the Nile from Elephantine towards the Delta. Archaeological finds are briefly introduced for each location through a combination of discussion, illustrations, and frequent maps. Since this part of the atlas is organized according to geography (south to north along the Nile), sites from different historical periods are inevitably mixed together, which leads to a confusing sequence of, for example, Ptolemaic temples followed by New Kingdom tombs followed by Predynastic graves and so on. While this arrangement might be useful as a travel guide of sorts, armchair travelers (like myself) who expect a continuous development of ideas may be disappointed. Perhaps if the authors had organized their "Journey" chronologically as well as geographically, this atlas would have had more of an impact on its readership, especially when reinforced by the plethora of photos, illustrations, and maps that are present.
Despite this misgiving, I thought that the short articles that constitute the remainder of the atlas were informative and interesting. Topics covered in these articles include Egyptian art, religion, and writing, among others. And of course, numerous photos and diagrams are provided that are a pleasure in and of themselves.
As far as I'm concerned, the major strengths of the "Cultural Atlas of Ancient Egypt" are the excellent historical maps, the floor diagrams of the major sites, and the visual delight provided by the beautiful photos. Although the geographical framework is a limitation, the strengths outweigh the weaknesses, and this book will probably be able to satisfy the "Egyptomania" fix of many readers.
A superb guide........2002-05-16
I have loved traveling to Egypt for years and have devoured everything decent I can find to read about this country and its people. If you want to understand the Egyptians this volume is one good place to start.
An intellectual and visual delight.......2000-10-18
This is the second edition of one of the finest summations of ancient Egyptian civilization ever written for the general reader. Not only is this an exellent introduction to many aspects of Egypt, it is a visual delight. The maps, especially, configure in the reader's mind spacial relationships and their cultural implications. Other illustrations of temple precincts and related architectural elements of Egyptian life supplement the excellent writing, written for, but never "down to" non-specialists. If I were to own only one reference work on ancient Egypt, this would be the one.

The original edition!.......2002-10-23
I see this has been revised and is now entitled "Cultural Atlas of Ancient Egypt" which makes sense because it is really is focused on how the culture of Egypt is a reflection of the geography and natural environment and how humans learned to adapt it to them. This was one of the books we used in a course I had back at Columbia University and I've kept using it ever since. The maps are wonderful, the insets about the society are great, and the pictures both drawn and photographs of surviving artifacts are very useful. I plan on using the updated version of this for my own class on Egyptian history.

*the* atlas to own on Ancient Egypt.......2000-06-14
The first part of the book introduces a comprehensive, condensed yet accurate summary of Ancient Egyptian history. The second part presents archaeological details and plans of the main cities of Upper and Lower Egypt, as well as Nubia. The last part offers a description of Ancient Egyptian society, with its scribes, its army, its religion, and its gods. The authors have also included a list of kings and pharaohs. Readers will see how the pyramids were hypothetically built through reconstructions and diagrams. Excellent maps, a glossary and a bibliography are to be found at the end of this wonderfully illustrated book. Highly recommended, it makes a good reference for all.
An essential addition to your library on ancient Egypt........1999-12-12
Research on my first novel--COME KILL THE PHARAOH, published in Germany as DER GELIEBTE DER NEFROTETE and in France under the title L'AAMANT DE NEFERTITI--depended heavily on this excellent atlas. It saved me hundreds of hours of additional research, and brought into focus the geographical history of ancient Egypt. See Amazon in Germany for review.
Factual, very informative........1999-03-12
Having visited Egypt during January, 1998 and travelled through Cairo, Alexandria, El Elamein, Hurghadah to Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbal I have found the book very interesting. Contains excellent photographs, text and explainations.
A great book for anybody proposing a trip to Egypt or having been to Egypt to re-inforce where they have been and what they have seen.
Highly recommended.

Worthwhile.......2006-11-23
Buy this to get a feel of the land, not to reference quick information about an area. There are no specific boundaries, just regional approximations, and mimimal information about each area.
There are two kinds of maps, topography and layer-tint. I didn't find the topography map useful, but the layer -tint ones are great. They've used color to represent depth/height to a very precise level. Most maps are represented three times - Layer tint for 2 periods (different names) and topography combined.
Its all based on two maps, Holy Land South and Holy Land North and uses the same key of 20-odd place names throughout. The next section is a decreased scale of the same map, so of course its divided into an increasing quantity. Etc. The HL S and HL N maps are 1:650,000, then you go down to 1:275,000 & 1:150,000/100,000, all based on NASA information.
There are 8 panoramic photos in most sections. There's virtually no text. (Apparently thats in volume 2.) Both are very difficult to find. Sunday Software sells the first one. [...]
A cd comes with Volume 1 that you can 'fly over' the land. I wouldn't buy it separately for the topography flying. The layer tint flying is great. It also has six or eight great photos of each region (e.g. Judean Shephelah) and many of places. You can measure area, length, etc. and fly at different altitudes. There is text describing each place which is nice, since the atlas has none.
Beautiful and Helpful (but ISBNs are confusing!).......2005-01-26
This is a two-volume work with one ISBN. How confusing!
Both volumes are beautiful, but make sure you know which one you are getting.
VOLUME 1 has a white cover.
VOLUME 2 has a black cover.

I hate to brag, but I am lucky enough to have Kristie C. Wolferman as my 7th grade History teacher! Yuo may think I am eriting this review just becuase I personally know the author...and you're right, but I kow from experience that she is one of the best writers in the wolrd today! Today and yesterday I had two writing worksho classes with her and she taught me so much it's unbelieveable. This is so cool that I am writing a review about my own teacher. Mrs. Wolferman if you are reading this....YOU ROCK!!! Although I have never had the chance to read this book, I know that Mrs. Wolferman has written a great book, and I will read it! I bet you wish that Kristie C. Wolferman was your history teacher don't you? I know, it's not everyday you get a fomous author as your history teacher. If yuo want me to get her autograph for you, E-mail me. I will only charge $2.75. You may think that's a lot but for Kristie Wolferman's autograph? It;s totally worth it. You should definitaly read The Osage in Missouri. It's a great book, and you'll learn a lot!

An Osage Writes about the Osage .......2007-01-07
Burns has written an interesting and thorough history of the Osage Indians from their origins up until about 1950. To those who aren't familiar with them the Osage were one of the most powerful American tribes. They ruled over a shadowy empire in the 18th century that included most of the states of Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, and Oklahoma, and held the French and Spanish at bay. Their downfall came with the tidal wave of Anglo and Indian emigrants from the east, disease, and the destruction of the buffalo herds in the mid to late 19th century. Today, the Osages live in Oklahoma and are among the richest and best educated of Indians. (Truth in advertising: I have a smidgin of Osage blood, as well as that of three other Indian tribes.)
I have a few complaints about this book. The author probably over-estimates the influence of the Osages on American culture. Similarly, I thought his statement that the survival of tribe was due to the Jesuits was a statement unsupported by any facts he presented. As the Jesuits were missionaries to the tribe during its period of decline in the late 19th century one might legitimately ask what benefits they brought. The author's connection of the Osage with the early explorations of DeSoto is probably off the mark -- in the opinion of most scholars. I also wish his footnotes were more ample. For example, he tells me the name -- which I hadn't known -- of my g-g-g-g grandmother but doesn't tell us where he discovered this bit of genealogical treasure.
However, points of disagreement aside, this book delves deeply into the society and history of the Osage. It covers just about every aspect of the tribe -- war, religion, agriculture, hunting, character, folklore, and population. Perhaps the most interesting section of all is about the early 20th century when the newly-tamed and "civilized" Osage became rich with oil money which led to both amusing and tragic consequences. The author relates a number of ancedotes from the period.
"A History of the Osage" is written with grace and conviction. Many maps supplement the text which is dotted with a great number of interesting tidbits of information.

Fantastic Book.......2006-05-29
Meticulously researched and easy to read study of the rise and fall of the Osage tribe from the 16th through the 18th centuries. This book explains on both a human and a global level the economic and political processess at work in the prairies and southern plains during this period of history.

A very scholarly written book. An excellent reference source for those researching the Osage Indian. However, the Author or publisher goofed on one of the References/Source cited: He cites " Wiggers, Robert "Osage Culture Change Inferred from Contact and Trade with the Caddo and Pawnee" an unpublished PH.D Dissertation, University of Missouri 1985. The Author of this Dissertation is Robert Wiegers, Professor of History, Central Methodist College, Fayette, MO. I am a former student of his and have a copy of the Dissertation. This is probably a typographical error, but it would confuse the researcher.
