Book Description
The states of Indochina had been French colonies or protectorates since the 19th century. However, in March 1945 the Japanese interned all French troops and officials, and turned over all civil government to local authorities. The power vacuum caused by the Japanese surrender allowed the Viet Minh, a strong revolutionary organisation, to be established throughout Vietnam. When the French returned to the north, incidents between French and VM troops were inevitable, negotiations collapsed and the French opted for a military solution. This book examines the history of the conflict and the forces of both sides.

Round One when the French got whupped.......2005-08-18
A short but 1st rate look at how the French tried to maintain their Far East Empire in the face of Local Nationalism. Excellent text and illustrations make this a good buy for the person who wants an insight in this forgotten part of the Viet Nam War.
Through A Mirror Darkly.......2000-06-16
North Americans have a bad habit of forgetting history, and not just their own. Before their was a Vietnam War, the French were fighting it out tooth and nail with the Viet Minh to preserve the next-to-last reminent of their colonial empire. They lost, and the United States leapt in convinced they could do what the French had failed at. This book gives you an excellent persepctive on this forgotten bit of Indochinese history. Although the main thrust is on the uniforms and other militaria, it also gives the reader a "grunt's" view of the war. Some interesting historical tidbits too. Get it and see.

In one 320 page book you can understand what Vietnam was all about........2007-07-03
If you can only recommend one book to your book adverse neocon friends, this is it. Professor MacLear taught at West Point. I have not heard anyone yet on the right accuse West Point of being a liberal institution.
Opportunity Lost.......2000-06-08
When I first read this book I had little knowledge of the real politiks that were being played out and the reasons why.
However, on completion I came to the conclusion that the USA had missed a golden opportunity to secure Vietnam as a loyal ally amongst the Asian dominos.
The irony of the whole affair was reinforced in this most informative analysis. What if the US decided to recognise Hoh and his government and ignore the French. It must have come oh so close. While Hoh was a member of the Communist party he was ultimately a nationalist who openly recognised and respected the democratic ideals of the USA. Hoh's numerous (and most polite) written entreaties to Truman and his use of the American declaration of independence go further to support this assumption.
Billions of $ were invested by the US supporting the French in the French-Indochina war and then during their own conflict in Vietnam War. What a waste, what a cost...
I can't help but think what a difference these $ would've made if US govt in 1945 seized the opportunity and helped Hoh, Giap and co develop the country and build strong diplomatic relations in a very strategic part of Asia proper.
The book appealed to me for many reasons, but particularly because of Mike Maclear's impartial, dispassionate treatise of the subject.
Australia, like the US, is still coming to terms with its' own Vietnam War legacy. Many veterans are making the journey back to Vietnam to try to heal old wounds - I think that this book should be compuslory reading for all those who were there and for all those who see futility of war.
10,000 Day War.......2000-01-30
M.McClear shows the vietnam war began in April of 1945 and lasted until april 1975 exactly 10,000 days. It shows our involvment with Ho Chi Minh in the remote jungles of southeast Asis and how we trained the Viet Minh, and How we promised Ho and Genereal Giap, that they would become the masters of thier own destinies. I shows how we betrayed Ho and allowed the french to return to Vietnam after WW2, and we supported the french effort, by providing them with 2 billion dollars worth of arms and money only to be later banished from France when they closed our post war bases. It shows a dissapointed Ho Chi Minh who quoted our own Declaration Of Indepedence The they took control of the north. It goes on to show our Blunders through out the fifties caused by the Macarthy era, and finnaly our defeat, It is the best and presice book I have ever read covering the Vietnam conflict. Thank You

USIA and the French and Diem period in Vietnam........2006-02-06
Simpson was a USIA officer in Vietman during the fifties and sixties. In this excellent personal observation of what he saw during this time period, Simpson details the drift toward U.S. intervention. He also details the defeat of the French and their replacement by the Americans. This is good history, as well as a good personal story of U.S. involvement.
The author does a good job of showing the antagonism between the French and the Americans. The French was losing their empire, but still wanted the have its sphere of influence. America was the rising power. Its seems the French were jeleous of American power, and did all in their power to thwart it.
Also interesting is the infighting between the anti-Communist Vietnamese. There were so many different groups fighting for a share in the power that they forgot their main enemy, the Viet Minh (or Viet Cong). Simpson details this infighting in the stories of the coups. They destroyed the unity of the anti-Communist groups.
This is a nice little history of American involvement prior to the Marines landing in 1965. This book shows the drift to U.S. involvement in a war they probably couldn't have won. A nice read.

A unique and compelling perspective on Vietnam.......1999-11-14
In reading "Tiger in the Barbed Wire", I re-discovered Howard Simpson, having read an obscure mystery of his ("Junior Year Abroad") quite a few years ago. Believe me, the two books have nothing in common. Howard Simpson has discovered that he has more than one story to tell about his own life, no need to resort to fiction. How many Americans can claim to have served their country in Vietnam for so long, from pre-Dien Bien Phu to our own involvement much later? The late Lou Conein comes to mind but he did not leave a written legacy, nor was he likely to. Simpson not only worte about Dien Bien Phu but he was there, getting out while it was still possible to escape the trap being laid by the Viet Minh. Simpson draws word pictures of what it was like to be in Hanoi before the Geneva accords, when the French thought they still ruled the roost; he draws marvelous descriptions of what it was like to live in Saigon in those days when the French still clung to visions of their empire, looking down at the newly arriving Americans as interlopers. And finally, how that all changed, so dramatically, after DBP. This is a book to be savored by any former American officials in Vietnam. Simpson talks of familiar places that changed dramatically, of French conniving that was usually not in our best interest, of ever changing Vietnamese officials who usually did not understand official US policy, or worse, of ever changing US officials who rarely understood the Vietnamese or what was going on in Vietnam. But it is really Simpson's unique perspective on the French and their involvement that make this such a fascinating read for me. Howard Simpson's book has a spot in my library right along with History" but, truth be told, Simpson's was the most compelling, perhaps because I felt that I could identify with it personally. I look forward to reading his latest memoir, "Black Tie and Bush Hat". For me, Simpson's memoirs are more compelling than his mysteries - but this comes from an old francophile who has spent many years in France, including Marseilles and Paris, as well as Saigon. In short, all of Simpson's well tread venues. When he writes of the Corsican mafia and some favorite watering holes in Saigon, a smug smile comes to my face.

A precise political and miltary history of Vietnam.......2002-06-30
The author of this book aims to give the reader a better understanding of Vietnam than if we were to read any of the other multitude of books written about Vietnam. Mr Wintle, the author does not jump straight in at the deep end of Vienamese history and start describing the prelude to the war between north and south Vietnam, he simply decribes this war as if it where just like any of the other wars in Vietnam's long, troubled history. This approach by Wintle gives the reader a very good perspective on the Vietnam war that the western world will be unfamiliar with as it is used to looking at this war in a very short sighted fashion. This different perspective helps the reader to understand the war from the Vietnamese perspective when for so long most of us have been looking at it through an American and European perspecive.
Although the author does give a good and concise history of the various Vietnam wars through the centuries, the account he has written of Vietnamese early history is rather tedious and uninteresting. Although this chapter on Vietnamese early history is necessary if we are to understand Vietnam properly, Wintle makes no attempt to link this early history to the modern era. This particular chapter seems to be written in a much more uninteresting way than the rest of the book, it seemed to me that the author wasn't interested in this chapter himself it is written with so little skill or enthusiasm. I found myself skipping through large tracts of the opening chapter which lasts for about fifty pages and it is this badly written chapter that lets the book down badly.
The rest of the book, however is as readible as a good novel, the story of the Vietnamese nationalists' fight first against the French, then against the Saigon government backed by the French, then backed by the Americans is a great one to read. The author details the various set-backs in the modern wars and also the great victories, like that over the French at Dien Bien Phu, this account is particularly brilliant and is about the best account I have ever read of any military encounter whether fact or fiction.
Although the author seems to take the side of the Vietnamese in all of their wars including that against the Americans, he does not hesitate to write about some of the terrible things that the Vietnamese done on their own people including the military tactic of sending charge after charge against fortified postions which resulted in thousands of unnecessary deaths. The book, on the whole is a good one and is very readible, (apart from the first chapter)it gives a very good histroy of the Vietnam wars and their preludes. This book is ideal for anyone looking to read a book about Vietnam that is not filled with great deeds that American soldiers done and details of their great bravery, it simply tells the history of a people who have fought for their freedom in many centuries and eventually won it.

Book Description
Widely acclaimed when it appeared in French in 1987, this first general history in English examines the colonial background, the period of Japanese control, the rise of Ho Chi Minh, the struggle of his rural-based guerrillas through the five former kingdoms, and the French defeat at Dien Bien Phu. The war, which split France and politicized the French army, led to the collapse of the Fourth Republic and the reemergence of de Gaulle. Although Ho lost the peace, he established a model of mid-20th-century revolutionary war and set the scene for America's military involvement in Vietnam. Certain to become the standard work on the subject.

Disgusting........2007-05-13
REA's AP World History is in no way comparable to the well made Princeton Review's books. Many questions are incorrect as well as the scoring guide printed in the book.
Unless you enjoy review books that are extremely dry, do not purchase this book. I returned this book the day I recieved it.
Is NOT comprehensive.......2007-02-26
I was completely disappointed with the content of the book. The book takes the usual Euro-centric view without discussing other cultures as in depth. This is not surprising considering that the author is an European history professor. The book discusses WWII in Europe quite in depth, but it hardly discusses WWII in Asia. The only mention of WWII in Asia is in reference to the US. THere are pages devoted to the suffering of people under German aggression while there is not one single sentence mentioning the suffering that was occurring in Asia at the same time in Korea and in Nanjing. It would be better to purchase another AP World History book. I ended up returning this back to the store.
REA's new World History Guide.......2006-12-10
Unfortunately, this book does not nearly compare to REA's APUSH book. The writing is very dry, probably since this book is written by only one person. and why does she insist on praising ancient civilizations for being "very tolerant"? this book is, however, pretty comprehensive, and if you like reading dry writing and share her love of tolerance, then this book is for you.
