What Really Happened in Roswell?: Just the Facts (Plus the Rumors) About UFOs and Aliens
ASIN: 0688172474
Release Date: 2003-08-05 |
Book Description
On the night before Halloween, 1938, that's what people all over the country heard coming over their radios -- an announcement that a glowing yellow spacecraft had crashed in New Jersey. When the announcer went on to describe an alien covered in tentacles that came wiggling out of it, the entire country panicked!
What most Americans didn't know was that this emergency broadcast wasn't real -- it was a radio play, performed by actors, based on the H. G. Wells science-fiction novel The War of the Worlds. Aliens hadn't landed in New Jersey that night. There was no spacecraft.
Customer Reviews:
A Very Fun, True History.......2004-10-07
This is an excellent portrait of a moment in history, rightly known as "the world's greatest practical joke," the radio broadcast of WAR OF THE WORLDS. It describes not only what the radio audience heard, but the results: panic, lawsuits, and psychological studies of why people panicked in the first place. There are numerous amusing sidebars describing the key players, including novelist H. G. Wells, actor Orson Welles (no relation to the novelist), and Howard Koch, who did the (unauthorized) adaptation of the novel into a radio play.
This is a work with special meaning for those who remember the actual broadcast, as well as families who love SF and want to introduce young relatives to the sometimes-whacky history of the genre.

Update it, bring it back.......2000-12-15
The question: can a ten-year-old topical reference still be relevant? The answer: in the case of 50 Ways to Fight Censorship, you bet. This slim, plain-speaking book by former Rolling Stone editor Dave Marsh, with several contributors who range from author and Paris Review editor George Plimpton to poet Allen Ginsberg and a television writer, has very sound, constitutional advice that remains current, even if it was around before the Internet. Now that the Supreme Court has conferred the presidential tiara on George W. Bush, we are seeing the return of the right-wing censors of the Reagan-Bush era, like Dick Cheney and James Baker. We already have been hearing proposals for limiting speech on the Internet. We need a manual like this to make sure we act, not just react, to preserve our first and most fundamental right as Americans, to speak freely and to decide for ourselves what is appropriate to read, hear and view.
An M.O. to First Ammendment freedom fighters.......2000-12-11
For all those people out there who want to stand up, who want to make their voices heard in the ongoing battle against censorship, but just don't know what to do: Dave Marsh has your answer. "50 Ways to Fight Censorship..." is packed with ideas of how you can join in the fight, be it locally or nationally. Marsh provides lists of oranizations you can get in touch with to help get you started, and his suggestions are practical enough for just about anybody to make an impact.
What you can do!.......2000-05-12
Have you ever walked into a library and not been able to get the book you wanted? Or walk into a movie store, but the title had been banned? Perhaps you aked yourself why? Or what you could do to stop the government from pulling titles simply because they dont like it. The first thing that you could do, is read this book. This book talks about numerous things you can do to stop the censors for taking away your first amendment right. Everytime you are denied anything because of censorship, your freedom of speech is being violated. Authors, artists, musicians, and directors are all being halted from showing the world their thoughts due to censorship, and we have to stop it now!
Short, Fun, and very informative........1998-01-18
Finally, a book that tells the truth about censorship, and what you can do to provent it. This is a must for everyone who is interested in stopping censorship, and I think the censors should read it too. As a relaty check. Sorry to be sor preachy, but The book is great. Read it!

He lives in northern California.
Customer Reviews:
Nice little book about Titanic.......2007-06-18
This was a nice little book, however, I felt it repeated itself a lot with the same information over and over. In addition, there were several grammatical errors/sentence mistakes that always detracts from a read. Some of the pictures were very interesting-particularly the last picture taken of Murdoch and Lightoller before the ship left on its journey. I did learn a few new things about the Titanic.
Excellent Book on the Titanic!.......2005-06-26
I really enjoyed this book on the Titanic. Being a bit of a Titanic buff, I found new information with a human face that kept me engaged throughout. My biggest quibble with the book is that Meredith needed an editor who would tell him not to make plurals using apostrophes! LOL But overall this book presented the facts in a fast, concise format that I found quite interesting. A must for all Titanic buffs.
An excellent and concise overview of the Titanic story........2000-04-24
Meredith's book is a very useful, easy to use reference work onfacts about the Titanic. It proceeds in a logical progression chapterby chapter beginning with the birth of the idea for the three giantliners, through the building of Titanic, the crew, the voyage, the disaster and the aftermath.
Along the way the author touches upon almost every aspect of the Titanic story. I did not agree with all his conclusions, but they are all presented in a reasonable, logical and readable fashion. Meredith has the ability to explain the many conflicting stories of the Titanic in a consistent, understandable style - a real gift.
Here are just a few highlights from chapters that really impressed me. In one chapter the author gives a walking tour of the ship, deck by deck. It is the best, most detailed description of the ship I have ever read.
He also has separate chapters on each of Titanic's ports of call, starting with Southampton, then Cherbourg, France and finally Queenstown, Ireland. He relates which passengers boarded the ship at each stop and includes examples from all classes, not just first class passengers as many other books have done. Again, it is the most detailed, informative description of what happened at each port I have read yet.
Later in the story, Meredith describes who boarded which lifeboats, and when each lifeboat left the ship, as well as relevent events that happened on each of the boats after the Titanic had sunk. Not since Archibald Gracie's book from 1913 have I seen such a commendable job done in describing the story of the life boats, a particularly complicated and confusing piece of the Titanic history.
Considering the sheer number of `facts' in the book (well over the nineteen hundred and twelve promised in the title), there are not too many mistakes. But he does make a few gaffs along the way....
The errors really are few and far between though and do not seriously dampen my enthusiasm for this book. It is well researched, and very readable. I heartily recommend this book to anyone interested in the Titanic story. People reading about the Titanic for the first time will find this an excellent introduction, and even seasoned Titanic readers will find this to be well worth their time. END
An Ok Book If Your Looking For Fast Facts But...............1999-07-10
My problem with the book "1912 Facts About Titanic by Lee W. Merideth" was that they had mistakes that could have easily be fixed if they read pretty much any other book on Titanic. When writing about the Allison Family she named their daughter as Helen but everyone knows her name was Loraine. A fact easy to look up in "Titanic An Illustrated History." Another easy mistake is when talking about J.Bruce Ismay, when he started yelling "lower away, lower away" is was not 4th Officer Boxhall who yelled back at him, it was 5th Officer Lowe. Again easy to look up. Another thing is Lee W. Merideth would jump ahead in the story and then jump back. Sometimes repeating a part of the same story twice. Overall it's an OK book if your looking for a Titanic Book to get the facts fast. But if you want a Great read on Titanic's History pick up "Titanic An Illustrated History" not only will you get the Facts but you will also see some wonderful Illustrations.
I liked it........1999-07-08
The book was good for its logical order of listing the facts. Plus they are placed in chonological order, making it easy to find a single piece of information. The facts were consice, not drawn out with sentmentality or other things that may keep the facts 'hidden'. And that is what makes the book so likable.

Book Description
Nobody really understands Dutch women. They seem lively, well-educated and liberated. And yet—apparently—their participation in the labor market has always been far less than that of women in surrounding and economically comparable countries. Why? This book offers a wide-ranging and searching inquiry into the issue, relating data and conditions in the Netherlands to those in six other western European countries: Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Sweden and the United Kingdom. It probes attitudes to the family and motherhood and considers demographic trends and household composition throughout the period. It looks at women's education, their distribution throughout trade and industry, child care provision, and the disincentives and barriers to employment women have faced in the past and may still have today. The writer uses the facts to sift out valid from invalid (theoretical) explanations and relegates a number of them to the realm of the fairy tale.

A book every library should have!.......2007-07-21
I need to start by admitting that the author of "Secrets of the Seven Smallest States of Europe: Andorra, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City" (Thomas M. Eccardt) is a high-school friend of my wife. That having been noted, I would recommend this volume even if I had no idea who the author was.
The small nations of Europe (as well as small nations in general) have held a fascination for me for years. When we received this book, I read it avidly, and was able to learn fascinating information about the character and history of various of the small states of Europe, despite my already vaster than normal knowledge of these countries. I felt that I was transported to the countries he was describing. My wife had to beg me to finish so that she could read it.
Mr. Eccardt has used his time well in researching the subjects thoroughly. He includes not only information the traveler venturing into these countries would want to have at hand, but historical, geographical, and practical information any "armchair traveler" would want as well. Students needing to write a paper on one of these countries would do well to consult this tome in their preparation. Writers wanting to set a novel in one of these countries (or in a fictitious state in Europe) could glean useful information for the setting of said work from this book. If you plan to go to Europe, take this book with you!
I personally would have loved to have access to this kind of resource when I was in junior high school, high school, and even in college. Every library of any worth should rush to place this book on its shelves.
WELL RESEARCHED AND PLEASING TO READ .......2007-06-07
Excellent and well researched book that deals with the history and geography of the seven smallest states of Europe. Easy to read and really engaging. I honestly recommend this book to whoever wishes to learn about these real but not very well known independent states. Extremely interesting.
Microstates deserve more analysis of this kind.......2006-03-29
This fascinating compendium fills an important gap in the area of political and cultural geography. One hopes for a further augmented second edition that covers in more detail the Order of Malta (a sovereign entity), the Channel Islands (which are personal dependencies of the British Crown, not part of the UK and EU - and beyond the jurisdiction of the UK Parliament) and perhaps such unusual European enclaves as Campione d'Italia (a piece of Italy within Switzerland that functions as a quasi-Swiss jurisdiction).
Stephen Klimczuk, Alexandria, Virginia and Victoria, BC
A Masterful Geographical and Historical Work.......2005-10-08
In researching sources for information on Malta for a forthcoming excursion after the Universala Kongreso de Esperanto next year, I came across Tom Eccardt's "Secrets of the Seven Smallest States of Europe." I not only found everything I needed to know about Malta, but was fascinated by his treatment of the other six small states. This is an excellently researched work, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in geography or history.
