Book Description
History comes to life as this photographic collection shows what the Spanish American War was really like. The authors have combined rare photographs and illustrations with authoritative text and maps to present a comprehensive documentary portrait of the momentous clash of arms. Here are the stories of the controversial and tragic sinking of the Maine, the stirring U.S. victories at Manila Bay and San Juan Hill; the bloody siege of Santiago, and all the colorful players of this American epic, including Theodore Roosevelt and Rough Riders, Commodore George Dewey, and opinion-manipulator William Randolph Hearst. The Spanish American War is the definitive pictorial record of the war that brought the United States onto the world's stage and into the twentieth century.
Book Description
New in paperback, this is the photographic history of the war that tore apart the country's spirit. Using more than 450 U.S. and Vietnamese official and personal photos, this book illustrates and describes the battles, weapons, emotions, heroism, and pain of this most controversial of American wars, from its earliest beginnings to the fall of Saigon in 1975.
Book Description
From Library Journal
At long last, the familiar and overused photographs of the "Day of Infamy" can be retired. The 430 prints in this new and welcome collection were gathered from various Japanese and U.S. sources, and most have never been seen by the general public. The majority were taken during the height of the air raid itself, many from Japanese cockpits. Along with numerous maps and sketches, they are arranged according to the various phases of the battle and are supplemented with commentary by two of Gordon Prange's coauthors (Goldstein and Katherine V. Dillon). The overall effect is to give the reader an uncanny sense of being present at the battle. This book will make a wonderful companion piece to Prange's now-classic At Dawn We Slept.

Shouldn't be your first book on the attack, but..........2007-08-30
If you have gleaned all the knowledge possible from the multitude of first person and general overviews published, this book will give you a concise knowledge of the tactics and timeline of the events. It contains a wealth of photographs that you will not see anywhere else, and each one of them is pinpointed to the minute when it was taken. You will see the first bomb hit the floating drydock, you will see the California disappear into a sea of burning oil, and you will see period photographs of the men involved (on both sides), what they did, and where and when they died doing it. True, some of the photographs are dark and lack contrast in the details, but hey, if you don't know what the Oglala or Nevada looks like up close, then you are not ready for this book. Another nice feature is that you rarely have to turn the page to study a photo as it is referenced in the text. It would have been nice to have this book printed on glossy pagestock, but I believe the publishers suspected it would not have a wide audience. Nonetheless, it is an invaluable reference for the serious student of the Day of Infamy.
Adaquate.......2006-07-30
Nice collection of period photos related to this part of history. and the written material isn't that bad though neitehr insightful or really much.
That's the sum value of this book.
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!.......2005-11-13
This book is absolutely terrible, a waste of money. The photographs are so badly reproduced that they're little more than muddy smudges. The quality is far worse than anything your local newspaper can produce in the way of pictures.
I can only assume the current version is different than the one that was given five stars. I've seen many of these photographs in other places ... and some original prints. Most of them come from beautiful monochromatic prints, not difficult to reproduce or to print in books. And, in this paperback version while the size is nice, it's a waste. You could double the size of the book and it would still be a waste.
There are many examples of a caption identifying something (very large something at that) on the deck of a ship. It isn't so much that you can't identify the object, you can't even make out the ship.
There are many instances of this. If you're inclined to buy this sort of thing, this is one instance in which you'll be far better off looking at a copy in a regular book store to insure you're not disappointed and throwing your money away. I know that I threw mine away.
If You Read Only 2 Books On Pearl Harbor, This Has to Be One.......2001-06-19
I just finished "At Dawn We Slept" and was very impressed with it. I then saw the movie "Pearl Harbor". On a coffee stop at the bookstore, I saw this book, and bought it on the good impression of a similar volume about D-Day by the same editors. The coffee was just OK, but the book is tremendous.
This book, as did the D-Day issue (see my review if you're interested), presents original photos tied together with a fairly simple narrative that tells the story of the Pearl Harbor attack. You'll get to see photos of all the major players, Kimmel, Short, Yamamoto, et al. Some of the attack photos are pretty amazing. The original Japanese photos are stunning and good for hardware fans. The Japanese ariel photos lend great detail to the story. The superimposed flight patterns are very instructive. As I implied above, after Prange's book and the movie, this book was the crowning glory to my Pearl Harbor reading.
This book will catch you off-guard. At first it looks very simple, which it is, almost for children, but when you dive into it, it gets surprisingly detailed. All the US planes that were involved are present in photographs, even a B-18! The text presents facts and occurances, and no politics. 90% of the ship photos are spectacular.
So, go out and buy this book. You really should have it, then read one of the many books about Pearl Harbor. The photos will make the story live. Well done Mr. Goldstein and Ms Dillon.
Book Description
This compelling photographic history examines the war in its entirety, from its causes and protagonists to the strategies, weapons and battles. Goldstein and Maihafer have collected more than 450 vivid photographs, many never before seen by the general public. Published on the fiftieth anniversary of the Korean conflict, The Korean War remembers the experience of the American fighting man in "the forgotten war."

Remembering 'The Forgotten War'.......2007-02-26
As we hear about North Korea on the news today it is interesting to go back to see the war as it was actually fought. The Korean War was a sad story of American mistakes. A mistake in a speech led the North Koreans to think we didn't care. The run down condition of the American army in terms of equipment and men can only be called foolish. For an example of this, read about Task Force Smith beginning on Page 30 - this is the Army's equivalent to Pearl Harbor. The Air Force, with it's leaders all being Bomber Boys had forgotten about ground support.
This is a great book on the story of the Korean War. It is profusely illustrated with dozens, maybe hundreds of photographs never published before. The commentary that describes the war is written by two retired military officers, one a Korean War vet, the other worked with Gordon Prange on 'At Dawn We Slept' and 'Miracle at Midway.'
My only complaint. There are so many pictures that they have to be printed fairly small. I'd have liked the book to be twice as long with the pictures at least twice as large, even if the book cost twice as much. There are a few mistakes in the book, i.e. a T-34 tank identified as a T-33, but they are minor and do not seriously detract from the overall high quality.
THE KOREAN WARsTORY AND pHOTOS.......2007-01-10
AS A KOREAN WAR VET I FOUND THE BOOK TO BE EXCELLENT IN CONTENT.
THE PHOTOS BROUGHT BACK MEMORIES...SOME NOT SO PLEASANT...AND DID CAPTURE MUCH OF THE TRUE FRUSTRATION BUT EVENTUAL JUSTIFICATION OF THAT WAR.
IT WOULD BE A VALUABLE ASSIGNMENT FOR ALL THOSE DO-NOTHING MINDS IN WASHINGTON TO READ THIS BOOK AND VISUALIZE JUST WHAT THAT PART OF THE WORLD MIGHT BE LIKE NOW HAD THE U.S. NOT RECOGNIZED THE POTENTIAL AND DONE SOMETHING ABOUT IT. AS INTEL. SGT. IN THE IST CAV DIV., I HAD ACCESS TO INTELLIGENCE FILES THAT INDICATED CAPTURED CHINESE SOLDIERS REPEATEDLY TOLD US THAT THE LONG RANGE PLAN INCLUDED THE FULL OCCUPATION OF SOUTH KOREA AND THEN A MOVE ON TO ALL ISLANDS SOUTH AND VERY LIKELY THE
PHILLIPINES. WITH JAPAN NEXT. ALL FOR THE GLORY OF CHINA AND THE COMMUNIST TAKE-OVER OF THE WORLD.
GOOD WORK GOLDSTEIN AND MAIHAFER.
A Propaganda with so many mistakes.......2006-03-08
The book is a total propaganda. It is biased, subjective and arrogant to describe the war, which happened 50 years ago. Objectively I am really surprised to find so many mistakes made by both authors. My understanding about writing history is a hard work, needs patience, requires objective research method and fully delves into the information before you write any sentence for the public. Let me list some mistakes in the book:
1, Photograph 1-11, the banner in the background is in Chinese not Japanese.
2, Photograph 3-36 refers Chinese casualty in July, 1950. The date of Chinese Army entry Korea is October, 1950. I guess this photograph has been moved to a wrong place.
3, Photograph 7-44, 7-45 refer to war happened after April 22nd. However, the clothes of Chinese POW in 7-44 are typically for summer and that in 7-45 are for winter. Readers can tell the difference by themselves.
4, Photograph 8-14, That MiG-15 on display was flown to South Korea on September 21, 1953 by a defecting North Korean pilot who was given a reward of $100,000. In November 1957 it was transferred to the U.S. Air Force Museum for public exhibition.
5, Photograph 9-11, there are no Chinese delegates shown in the picture.
I don't have too much time to check each picture and sentence accuracy. The authors need to do a lot of homework by themselves to know how to write an objective and accurate history book and to be responsible for the readers. If you want to understand Korean War, I fully suggested `The Korean War' by Max Hastings and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_war by Wikipedia Encyclopedia. Good luck!
Excellent introduction into the Korean War.......2005-06-22
Unjustly the Korean War is often refered to as the "forgotten war", a war which cost the life of over 54.000 Americans, 59.000 South Korean soldiers and over two million Korean civilians. The cold war turned hot and the repurcussions of this horrible conflict are still felt today and are not limited to the divided peninsular.
Authors Donald M. GOLDSTEIN and Harry J. MAIHAFER have done a great job with bringing the Korean war to life in their great visual history. It should be pointed out that co-author MAIHAFER served in Korea (he is featured in two of the photos in the book) and knows first-hand, what he writes about.
While the focus of the book is, as the authors state in the introduction, primarily on the American fighting man, the writers give credit where it is due and also detail the brave efforts of the South Koreans and United Nations troops. (It all too often appears in documentaries on the Korean War that the Americans fought the North Korean and Chinese single-handedly.)
Likely Korean war buffs will not find much new information here, but keep in mind that THE KOREAN WAR: THE STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS is more an introduction into the subject, providing the reader with the essential information on the conflict in its 160+ pages. As such it is great.
The hundreds of pictures accompany the text nicely. Compelling combat scenes, portraits of the leading men of all sides, weapons (from 3.5 bazookas, machine guns and recoilless rifles to F 80 Fighting Stars and F 86 Sabrejets) and vehicles, aerial bombardments, scenes of the frustrating truce talks at Panmanjom (and much more) bring the Korean War vividly to life.
The book is clearly structured, detailing in the first chapter the historical background and giving a geographical overview.
The following chapters follow the course of the war, from the outbreak of hostilities on June 25th, 1950 to the retreat to the Pusan perimeter, the amphibious landing at Inchon, the onslaught into North Korean territory in pursuit of the retreating Communists, the advance to the Yalu, the turning of the tide after the intervention of Chinese "volunteers" and the near catastrophe at the Chosin Reservoir, the retreat of the Allied and ROK forces, the stalemate and truce talks and finally the end of the war and its aftermath.
My main problem with the book is the lack of maps. There are several maps, unfortunately are not all of them essential, but more important ones are missing. For instance, a map detailing the advance of the Allied forces to the Yalu would be most welcome! (Hence my rating of four stars.)
Despite this flaw I hugely recommend THE KOREAN WAR: THE STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS.
A pictoral history of the Korean War.......2000-06-11
A divergence from some of the other books by Donald Goldstein, this book is a wonderful collection of photographs and stories of the Korean War. Maihafer and Goldstein do their best to retell the "forgotten war" using some of the best photographs of the war that I have ever seen. This book is a pictoral history and as such is not a comprehensive study of the war. Nevertheless it accomplishes its objectives well and is a must have for Korean War buffs.

The book are printed in very best quality. The images are "beautifull" and the text concise.
Good Pictorial of WWI.......2006-07-08
A very good book with excellent photography that captures the horror of the war to end all wars.
The BEST WWI Photobook around!.......2001-10-23
As a part-timer war scolar, I enjoy studying WWI. This book covers all of the first conflict of the twentieth century with brilliant pictures for the Imperial War Museum in London, England. The pictures are awe-inspiring and shows the damage and power of war. This book is puncuated with expert essays by war scolar Richard Holmes which fills in the action and behind-the-picture dialogue perfect for this book. This book is great for historians.
Book Description
Trace the legend, from its beginning to the final patrol. Baron Manfred von Richthofen, the top-scoring fighter ace of the First World War, remains practically without peer. In his short, but very glittering, career, this handsome, athletic, chivalrous, and gallant man had what is now called "star power," becoming an inspiration to fellow pilots and countrymen alike. His history unfolds here in generously annotated photographic biography, filled with 220 rare images that illuminate Richthofen's public and private lives. "...a distinguished historian of World War I aviation...offers...distinguished, illustrated coverage of...the legendary Red Baron. Making use of material, including photographs, from Richthofen family archives that were long sequestered by the Communists, Kilduff comprehensively summarizes Richthofen's career, mentors, comrades, aircraft, and opponents....a superior collection of graphic material concerning World War I aviation generally."--Booklist.

Hello from the world.......2001-02-15
Well, I expected more. What we have here is little more than a collection of photographs and captions. You REALLY must be a Richthofen buff to enjoy it fully. In all fairness, many of the photos are ones not usually seen and they do provide an insight into the life and times of a WWI ace.
As a history buff, but a not an authority on Richthofen, I was looking for a bit more on the man, his time and the unique character he represents.
Excellent book..........1999-10-23
An excellent book that allowed both the emotion and success of Richthofen's career to come through. The author correctly allowed the images to speak for themselves.
Extraordinary job!.......1999-10-12
This book is a gem. Peter Kilduff has done an extraordinary job in compiling a wide variety of contemporary photos of the men and machines that made up the brief life of Manfred von Richthofen. What can you say about a man who shot down 80 allied aircraft, killing 59 men, was himself shot down once, and then killed in combat at 25? It was a brief spectacular warrior's life and the photos give it all substance. The photos are given extensive captioning which makes for the narrative flow. It is almost like watching a documentary film. Something I found particularly interesting was the possibility that von Richthofen was shot in the head and almost killed by friendly fire as he was attacking an FE2. The observer of the 20 Squadron aircraft has long been credited with wounding the Red Baron, but Kilduff, using photos albeit briefly, makes a case for the wounding shot being fired from behind. Also missing is the usually drawn out argument of who actually killed von Richthofen, Captain Roy Brown or Australian ground gunners. Personally, I favour the ground fire theory. At any event, this is a great book well-presented and a worthy additon to the literature about the Red Baron.
Peter Kilduff has done it again, another superb MvR book.......1999-05-02
A wonderful addition to the von Richthofen files. Peter has done it one more time. Another wonderful book on Germany's greatest ace of the Great War. It is refreshing to read about the man and see many pictures which are completely new. Most MvR books hash and rehash how he died and who killed him. In my library, I have almost every book and article (good and bad) that have been published. Peter's other two books complete the most infomative, well researched and well documented history of a German hero who, until now was more myth than substance. Thanks to Peter's efforts, we now have substance of von Richthofen's short life. The histor of the Geat War is better for Peteer Kilduff's efforts.
Wonderfully illustrated and carefully researched........1999-03-21
A recent addition to my library, Peter Kilduff's newest offering on the life and times of Avations most legendary 'Ace' is already a gem and a great tool for historians and aviation enthusiasts. It was pains takingly researched and documented and every part of Manfred von Richthofen's life, his family and friends comes together in word and photo. Many of the photos have never been published before, making this book a unique and highly useful research tool. Mr. Kilduff obviously has a great respect for the subject and his objectivity is admirable. The Illustrated Red Baron is a remarkable historical document of German aviation through the camera lens and eyes of Germanys foremost fighter pilot of the Great War. The reader discovering the intricacies of a heroes rise to fame, war and the making of a legend and military genius.

Book Description
History is an encounter with the past, and the past is a history of encounters. Encounters in World History is designed to introduce students to both of these sorts of encounters. Using primary and visual sources, the authors employ the encounter theme as a fundamental organizing principle. By nesting sources in thematically integrated chapters, comparison and analysis of sources can be more substantive, while also providing more internal structure for instructors. At the same time, this is a world history reader, and it follows a chronological format. The material has been presented in such a way that instructors can craft their own courses, emphasizing the aspects they think most important. Chapters are organized so that the general theme is presented in a chapter introduction and then revisited in the separate introductions to specific readings. The readers can be used to highlight preferred eras, cultural zones, or themes, or a unique mixture of all three.
