Paul Szarmach Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Library Binding ASIN: 0824057864 |
Book Description
Gives quick access to medieval England
This valuable reference work offers concise, expert answers to questions on all aspects of life and culture in medieval England-art, architecture, law, literature, kings, commoners, women, music, commerce, technology, warfare, religion, and many others. It takes as its scope English social, cultural, and political life from the Anglo-Saxon invasions in the fifth century to the turn of the sixteenth century. To make it even more useful to information seekers, the Encyclopedia also traces England's ties to the Celtic world of Wales, Scotland, and Ireland, to the French and Anglo-Norman world of the Continent, to the Viking and Scandinavian world of the North Sea, and to the world of medieval Christendom. The result is a detailed portrait of the English Middle Ages and their key historical events, personages, and cultural contexts.
Authoritative, wide-ranging, informative
Multidisciplinary articles bring together a rich variety of scholarly perspectives and individual viewpoints found in no other comparable reference work. More than 700 entries by over 300 international scholars discuss topics ranging from Sedulius to Skelton, from Wulfstan of York to Reginald Pecock, from Pictish art to Gothic sculpture, from the Vikings to the Black Death, from musical instruments to weapons, from Beowulf to The Book of Margery Kempe, from comic tales to religious allegory, from saints to lawyers, from courtly love to prostitution, from mills to monasteries, from Alfred the Great to Geoffrey Chaucer.
Makes further inquiry simple and easy
A subject and name index makes it easy to locate information. Bibliographies direct users to essential primary and secondary sources and recent scholarship. Where possible, bibliographic references have been selected with an eye to accessibility for nonspecialists, although more advanced essential works are also included. Priority has been given to scholarship in English, books and journals likely to be available in university libraries, and general studies that provide good bibliographic and methodological guidance for further study.

ASIN: 0631224920 |
Book Description
The Blackwell Encyclopaedia of Anglo-Saxon England is a major reference-work covering the history, archaeology, arts, architecture, literatures and languages of England from the Roman withdrawal to the Norman Conquest (c.450 - 1066 AD). Drawing on contributions by scholars of international standing, the book comprises a series of some 700 articles by 150 contributors, arranged in alphabetical order, describing the people, places, activities and creations of the Anglo-Saxons. The articles are illustrated by maps, line-drawings and black and white photographs; the book is accompanied by a comprehensive table of the 'Rulers of the English, c.450-1066', and by a classified index of head-words to facilitate access to the Encyclopaedia itself. The Encyclopaedia can be consulted for information and bibliographical orientation on points of detail; in addition, its accessible style and layout make it ideal for browsing by readers interested in aspects of Anglo-Saxon England outside the range of their own specialism. Representing the full breadth of recent scholarly investigation, the volume is the first large-scale work of synthesis and reference in the field since Stenton's Anglo Saxon England (1943) and is likely to become the standard reference on this subject.

Encyclopedia of the Hundred Years War
John A. Wagner Manufacturer: Greenwood Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 031332736X |
Book Description
The Encyclopedia of the Hundred Years War provides its users with clear, concise, and basic descriptions and definitions of people, events, and terms relating in some significant way to the series of intermittent conflicts that occurred between France and England in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and that later came to be known collectively as the Hundred Years War. Because this volume focuses exclusively on war itself-what caused it, how it was fought, and what effects it had on the political, social, economic, and cultural life of England and France--it is not a general overview of fourteenth- and fifteenth-century history in either country, but a specialized treatment of the Anglo-French warfare that occurred during those centuries. Entries cover battles, leaders, truces and treaties, military terms and tactics, and sources for the war, including the plays of William Shakespeare, who has long been an important if not always reliable source for information about the people and events of the Hundred Years War. The Encyclopedia was written primarily for students and other nonspecialists who have an interest-but little background-in this period of European history. Besides providing a highly usable resource for quickly looking up names and terms encountered in reading or during study, the Encyclopedia offers an excellent starting point for classroom or personal research on subjects relating to the course, causes, and consequences of the Hundred Years War. All entries conclude with suggested further readings. A comprehensive bibliography completes the encyclopedia, which is fully indexed.

Encyclopedia of Medieval Literature:
Manufacturer: Greenwood Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0313300542 |
Book Description
Often misleadingly called the Dark Ages, the period between the fall of Rome and the Renaissance was a time of great creativity. The Middle Ages gave rise to some of the world's most enduring and influential literary works, including Dante's Commedia, Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, and a large body of Arthurian lore and legend. This reference is a comprehensive guide to literature written between 500 and 1500. While the volume is primarily devoted to the early literature of England, it also includes entries for historical persons and subjects of cultural relevance which would have been discussed in literary works or which might have affected their creation. Multicultural in scope, the book also covers Islamic, Hispanic, Celtic, Mongolian, Germanic, Italian, and Russian literature and culture of the Middle Ages. Longer entries provide thorough coverage of major English authors such as Chaucer and Malory, and of entire genres, such as drama, lyric, ballad, debate, saga, chronicle, and hagiography. Shorter entries examine particular literary works; significant kings, artists, explorers, and religious leaders; important themes, such as courtly love and chivalry; and major historical events, such as the Crusades. The entries are written by scholars and each entry concludes with a brief bibliography. The volume closes with a list of the most valuable general works for further reading.Customer Reviews:

Excellent book for scholars, but not for newcomers.......1999-05-15
This book is wonderful reference material. It alludes to many obscure source materials and attempts to explain the origin of many elements of the stories of Arthur and the Round Table. However, I would not recommend it for novice fans. Coghlan takes it for granted that most of the stories are familiar, and he spends most of his time explaining how the stories originated, how they were altered over time, and why inconsistencies exist. The format of the book makes it useful for looking up a particular name but not for browsing through a chronology of the tales.
This book is for the scholars and historians, not necessarily the readers and dreamers.

The Index of Middle English Prose: Handlist XVIII: Manuscripts in the Library of Pembroke College, Cambridge, and the Fitzwilliam Museum (Index of Middle English Prose)
Kari Anne Rand Manufacturer: D.S.Brewer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1843840537 |
Book Description
Two very different collections are surveyed in this volume. The manuscripts of Pembroke College, Cambridge are typical of a medieval foundation. Its core of books is a working library of that period, representing the interests and needs of its Fellows, very often given or bequeathed by them to the College. The collection was substantially enlarged in 1599 through the gift by William Smart of Ipswich of a large number of manuscripts which until the Reformation had belonged to the Abbey of Bury St Edmunds. By contrast the emphasis of the Fitzwilliam Museum collection is to a great extent art historical. At its heart are the manuscripts bequeathed by Lord Fitzwilliam in 1816. These were supplemented throughout the 19th century by a series of gifts and bequests, culminating in 1904 in the largest bequest to date, from Frank McClean, of some 203 manuscripts. In spite of the different character of the two collections, both contain a range of Middle English prose items, among them Chaucer's Boece, a complete Wycliffite sermon cycle and several Paston letters (all from Pembroke), the Anlaby Cartulary, the 'Canutus' pestilence tract, the Brut, Lydgate's Serpent of Division and Nicholas Love's Mirror of the Blessed Life of Jesus Christ (from the Fitzwilliam). KARI ANNE RAND is Professor of Older English Literature at the University of Oslo.

Omne Bonum: A Fourteenth-Century Encyclopedia of Universal Knowledge (Studies in Medieval and Early Renaissance Art History, 18) 2-Volume Set
James Le Palmer , and Lucy Freeman Sandler Manufacturer: Brepols Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1872501753 |
Book Description
In the third quarter of the 14th century, a clerk of the Exchequer compiled and wrote an encyclopedia of world knowledge for this own personal use. This manuscript, a mammoth work of 1100 folios and over 650 illustrations has survived in two large volumes, MSS Royal 6 E VI and 6 E VII, now in the British Library. In her authoritative text (Volume I), Professor Sandler indentifies, with intriguing methods of detection, the compiler and scribe of this vast encyclopedia as James le Palmer. She lists the sources on which he drew, covering topics such as theology, canon law, natural sciences, history of man, and the liberal arts. We are thus presented with a fascinating introduction to a medieval layman's quest for knowledge that tells us much about the intellectual aspirations of a fourteenth-century clerk. A notable feature of the compilation is that the entries, all in Latin, are for the very first time arranged alphabetically. By organising his entries in alphabetical order, James le Palmer made a pivotal contribution to the development of the modern encyclopedia, making the works of great interest to historians of the encyclopedia and lexicographers. The author also describes the different stages of production of the manuscript and distinguishes the work of several hands in the execution of the miniatures and initials that illustrate the entries in the Omne Bonum. The contents of these entries are summarized briefly in Volume II, where they are annotated with references to their relevant sources, and printed in the same alphabetical (Latin) order as in the original. In each case the illustration that accompanies the entry is reproduced.

Peace and War - A Theory of International Relations (1973 Anchor Books Paperback)
Raymond Aron Manufacturer: Anchor Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: B000L5QMXS |
Product Description
Raymond Aron's PEACE AND WAR - A THEORY ON INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS has been widely acclaimed as one of the most important books of the twentieth century. When it was first published in the United States in 1966, Stanley Hoffman called it "the most intellectually ambitious work that has ever been written about international relations." Henry A. Kissinger, reviewing it in THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW, declared: "Henceforth, international theorizing will require reference to Aron...This volume is indispensable for the specialist. The general reader will pick and choose but should gain a new perspective." It is for the general reader, who might be deterred by the original's 800 pages, that this shorter version has been prepared, with the permission and subsequent approval of the author. Here the reader can grasp the scope of Aron's theory of international relations, the breadth of his incredible knowledge, without being over-burdened by examples and elaborations that are of primary concern to the specialist. Here is a volume of urgent importance to anyone who is concerned about the basic problems of current foreign policy and their historical background, and the desperate need to find an alternative to war as an instrument of foreign policy in a thermonuclear age. Raymond Aron, one of the world's leading political scientists, holds a chair in sociology at the Sorbonne and has written for many leading American publications. Among his other books published in this country are CENTURY OF TOTAL WAR, THE OPIUM OF THE INTELLECTUALS, THE GREAT DEBATE and MAIN CURRENTS IN SOCIOLOGICAL THOUGHT.
