Book Description

Composed by two prominent statesmen-generals of classical China, this book develops the strategies of Sun Tzu's classic, The Art of War, into a complete handbook of organization and leadership. The great leaders of ancient China who were trained in Sun Tzu's principles understood how war is waged successfully, both materially and mentally, and how victory and defeat follow clear social, psychological, and environmental laws. Drawing on episodes from the panorama of Chinese history, Mastering the Art of War presents practical summaries of these essential laws along with tales of conflict and strategy that show in concrete terms the proper use of Sun Tzu's principles. The book also examines the social and psychological aspects of organization and crisis management. The translator's introduction surveys the Chinese philosophies of war and conflict and explores in depth the parallels between The Art of War and the oldest handbook of strategic living, the I Ching (Book of Changes).

3 out of 5 stars Decent.......2007-04-01

This book is decent if you have not extensively looked at chinese strategy. It lists Zhuge Liang's Essays, however you can find those for free on many websites, as well as inside the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the reason you should get this book is mainly because it offers a lot of history on Liu Ji, which is a LOT harder to find almost anywhere, and that part of it is extremely valuable in my eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-10-17

I will not give a long narrative of this book but I think it is an excellent read of Zhuge Liang's ideas on strategy. Although not complete it is great stepping stone for anyone interested in Liang's ideas. From Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Zhuge Liang has been viewed by myself as an incredible strategist and after reading this book I've gone on to read other books written or written about Liang. The Shambhala edition does have some bias but you cannot bias your own thoughts of Liang's strategies.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Study in Strategy........2005-03-13

All Art of War buffs have their own opinions of Thomas Cleary and Mr. Cleary has an obvious bias in this book. Having said that, one must understand that this is NOT "The Art of War" but rather a translation of Zhuge Liang's and Lin Ji's commentaries on the Art of War by Sun Tzu.

I enjoyed it very much and found it had some things I had not read in The Art of War . . . and I've read and re-read most if not all of the translations, including Mr. Cleary's.

As with The Art of War, I found a good deal of help in here for running my business. Business, after all, is indeed war.

I highly recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Very general, like a book of proverbs........2005-01-12

Let me first clarify the confusion over Sun Wu ("Sun Tzu")'s The Art of War and this book.

This is not a translation of the book The Art of War as it is known by the Western world. Sun Wu, a strategist from hundreds of years before Zhuge Liang, is indeed the father of Chinese military strategy, but culturally Zhuge Liang has acquired an even higher stature. A master strategist in the Three Kingdoms period, Zhuge Liang was dubbed "The Hidden Dragon", one of the two greatest strategists of the time, alongside his colleague Pang Tong ("The Young Phoenix"). Zhuge Liang almost single-handedly turned the wandering warlord Liu Bei, "whose army did not exceed a thousand", into one of the three superpowers during the Chinese civil wars of the Three Kingdoms. Zhuge Liang's reputation for manipulating the enemy was so great that he eventually became known as a sorceror figure who was able to summon weather and conjure spirits to do his bidding. For the record -- Zhuge Liang, philosophically, belonged to the "ru jia", or "confucianism", and *not* taoism or legalism, though often his methodology and concepts show similarities to the latter two. Zhuge Liang belongs in a tradition of "ru zhang", or "confucian generals", military leaders who were learned and studied, skilled in literature and philosophy, yet actively led military campaigns.

His influence has permeated Chinese culture -- in Chinese language, the name "Zhuge Liang" is now used (and not archaically) as a symbol of preternatural intelligence, while if you used "Sun Tzu" in your everyday language, you'd be considered pretentious.

Finally, the very title "The Art of War" has always been misleading. The Chinese term "bing fa" means more along the lines of "the methodology of war", and the use of this term often does *not* refer to the specific title of Sun Wu's treatise; the words "bing fa" are often used in the way you'd use the words "geography", "physics", or "agriculture". The translation "The Art of War" probably puts Sun Wu's original work more in the realm of philosophy than was ever intended -- imagine if a book entitled "Geographical Studies" were translated as "The Art of the Earth".

This particular book is *not* a translation of Sun Wu's "bing fa". It does not pretend to be one: The cover explicitly says that it is "Zhuge Liang's and Liu Ji's commentaries on the classic by Sun Tzu". So those who complain that this is a poor translation of Sun Wu's book need to have their eyesight checked.

That said, I still have major issues with this book.

I've never had the chance to read any of Zhuge Liang's original writings on warfare. Fictitious accounts of his life as related in Romance of the Three Kingdoms mention books that he'd passed onto his military successor Jiang Wei, but I had never found these in the original Chinese language. Thomas Cleary's translated passages in this book read as extremely dry, and far too general. Most of the concepts amount to "Be kind to your men, be smart in dealing with your enemies, don't fight unless victory is sure". All true, of course, but how useful is that? Occasionally interesting angles emerge ("to know an officer, get them drunk to observe their nature"; "a decadence in a general - to assess others without assessing oneself"), but all in all, these translated passages read like proverbs, with broadly defined terms. Not having read the original Chinese text, I don't know whether the problem stems from the original works by Zhuge Liang or from Mr. Cleary's translations, but I do know that the Chinese language, especially passages of discourse, are highly difficult to translate and often come across as broad and imprecise when put into another language. There are so many Chinese words without properly English equivalents (for example "Xiao", which combines filial obedience with love, and "Yi", which means far more than just "honour" or "loyalty" could convey) that Chinese-English translation is always a tricky business.

However, in moving to the second half, the "Liu Ji" section, I find major flaws in Mr. Cleary's work. The right-hand man of Ming Dynasty founder Zhu Yuan Zhang, Liu Ji was another strategist who had acquired near-mystical status; under his familiar name "Liu Ba Wen", Liu Ji is known as a fortune-teller figure who saves Zhu by reading omens and stars. He's not exactly known for military strategy in the same way as Sun Wu or Zhuge Liang, but once I'd figured out who he was, I was quite eager to read the translation.

Much like the approach of Meng Zi ("Mencius"), Liu Ji uses examples and stories to illustrate his points -- which makes his points a livelier read. Unfortunately, here Mr. Cleary's translations are often awkward, bogged down by names and geography. This book was smart in including a timeline of dynasties and Chinese historical periods referred to in Liu Ji's tales, but probably should have included maps from various periods. Many of the warlord states and territories over Chinese history share the same phonetic translation ("Jin", "Han", "Wei", and "Wu" all have multiple, disparate representatives throughout Chinese history), and Mr. Cleary's translations of these tales become very cluttered because of this. I had studied the Warring States and Three Kingdoms periods quite a bit, if not in an academic setting, and even I was usually confused as to when and where I was in a particular tale.

However, Mr. Cleary makes an even greater mistake in certain tales by omitting the names of participants. And when a tale refers to "this general and that governor and that other general...", it's linguistic chaos. As difficult as it may be to know the various phonetically translated names, omitting them not only raises questions as to the translation's faithfulness to the original text, but also discredits such tales on a stylistic level -- without the specificity of characters, the accounts may well have been fictitious (though they're not).

On a very broad level, some of the concepts in this book probably can be applied to the modern day. But there are precious few strategies to be absorbed from here that are detailed and specific enough to prove practically useful. Personally, I had bought this book in hopes of getting a more historical and less mystical picture of the man Zhuge Liang himself, and on that front, this book was entirely wrong for the job. I knew no more about Zhuge Liang after reading this than I had known from growing up in Chinese culture, reading Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and my past historical research into the Three Kingdoms period. So to me, this book is simply a novelty, lacking in the information I needed.

4 out of 5 stars Understanding the Book you are Reviewing.......2004-02-01

I can see from the other reviews of this book that those who rated it poorly had a basic misunderstanding of What they were reading. It seems that several folks were under the impression that they were reading Sun Tzu's " The Art Of War". Perhaps before attempting to read a book you should attemp to learn how to read.

You WILL find differances between Sun Tzu's book And Zhuge Liang's. Zhuge Liang wasquitea differant person than Sun Tzu. For insights into what kind of a person you should read Chronicles of the three Kingdoms and Romance of the Three Kingdoms. You'll find that Zhuge does not enjoy war quite as much as sun Tzu but he is just as good(Id say Better).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars thought provoking, insightful.......2004-06-03

Sun Tzu is recognized as a brilliant military strategist from the ancient Chinese cultures when the world was much different than it is today. Yet, his principles still apply today, particularly in the conduct of business. There are many lessons to be learned.

Gary Gagliardi is acknowledged as America's leading authority on Sun Tzu, so he has a deep understanding of the teachings of the philosopher and his perspectives on war. The approach he takes is that the art of war is much deeper than just fighting battles. In fact, confrontations are best avoided, according to the concepts explored in the book.

The author explains that all ancient Chinese philosophy and science was based on diagrams. Those diagrams are included in the book with explanations and interpretations that relate the ancient teaching to today's environment. Gagliardi has already written about the application of Sun Tzu's teaching to sales, marketing, management, and other modern endeavors.

The organization of the book forces the reader to move slowly to gain understanding and appreciation of the Master's ideas. The teachings, the interpretation of the diagrams are presented on the left hand pages. On the opposite right hand pages, the author relates the insights to current applications. Reading and absorbing the contents of this book will give the readers strength to think and perform differently-more wisely-in managing both business and personal endeavors. Each of us is engaged in competition, the basis of Sun Tzu's teachings.

The writings include the Chinese words next to the concepts. While this gives the text an air of greater authenticity and linkage with the original thinking, it can be distracting as this writing technique interrupts the speed of flow of reading...which may be another benefit of the way the book is written. The greatest value from this book will be your contemplation of the application of the principles in your own life.

5 out of 5 stars Insights into how the secrets apply to modern problems.......2004-02-06

Sun Tzu's The Art Of War Plus Its Amazing Secrets is the second volume of an outstanding three-book series by Gary Gaglardi about internalizing and mastering the ancient wisdom of Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu. The first book, Sun Tzu's The Art Of War Plus The Ancient Chinese Revealed dissected the formula-like Chinese idiograms with which the original classic was written; Sun Tzu's The Art Of War Plus Its Amazing Secrets goes further to unlock hidden secrets of each stanza, along with key concepts carefully explained for readers of all skill and experience levels. Each two-page spread offers a passage from the complete, English-translated version of The Art Of War on the left-side page, and insights into how the secrets apply to modern problems in business and in life on the right-side page. Very highly recommended reading.

Audio seminar on the strategic principles of Sun Tzu's The Art of War

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Riddled with problems.......2002-03-05

This audio CD is written and presented by Gary Gagliardi, loosely based on Sun Tzu's classic material. In Mr. Gagliardi'sbook of the same name, Mr. Gagliardi informs the reader that he "... discovered a previously unknown geometric side of Sun Tzu's concepts" (p. x) while he was preparing slides for his lecture material. In essence, Mr. Gagliardi began flow charting diagrams based on what he was reading, and drew a logic parallel to similar ancient Chinese concepts, such as five element theory, and yin/yang theory (all used in Chinese medicine and astrology). Mr. Gagliardi believes that it is possible (and "increasingly likely" (p. x)) similar type diagrams may have been used by Sun Tzu to explain the abstract concepts of competition. In Mr. Gagliardi's opinion, these so-called hidden diagrams are the "amazing secrets" he believes he has discovered and revealed for the first time in his book.

Once again, Mr. Gagliardi proves how little he actually knows about this subject. The Art of War was written by Sun Tzu, who was Taoist. A proper reading of the Art of War reveals numerous references to the Tao, as well as other ancient Chinese concepts such as Yin/Yang. The structure of Taoist core material is central to seeing the structure and philosophical tones of Sun Tzu's work. Authors with valid backgrounds in studying and interpreting Chinese source documents (such as Griffith, Ames, Cleary and Sawyer) have pointed this out as early as the 1960's. The influence of Taoism on the writing and presentation of Sun Tzu's material has been known and appreciated by the Western Scholarly community since 1910, and the work of Lionel Giles.

Mr. Gagliardi attempts to apply the lessons of Sun Tzu's The Art of War to business practice and corporate thought, based on his understanding of the work, as well as his background in sales, marketing and management theory. The problem with Mr. Gagliardi's writing style is he continually asserts that he is the foremost authority on Sun Tzu's material outside of China - particularly in the area of applying the lessons to competition. These messages permeate all of his books, as well as his website. He is not. In fact, he is far from it.

While the original text of The Art of War is profound on countless levels, and the basic tenants of Sun Tzu have been successfully applied to areas such as business for years... quite simply, Mr. Gagliardi's version of these theories are less than insightful, not very original, and are often flat out wrong - even when he attempts to present them as business lessons.

This is an interpretive book and accompanying CD, written and presented by Gary Gagliardi, loosely based on Sun Tzu's classic material. Within the preface of the book, Mr. Gagliardi informs the reader that he "... discovered a previously unknown geometric side of Sun Tzu's concepts" (p. x) while he was preparing slides for his lecture material. The problem with Mr. Gagliardi's writing style is he continually asserts that he is the foremost authority on Sun Tzu's material outside of China - particularly in the area of applying the lessons to competition. These messages permeate all of his books, as well as his website.

One of the marketing angles used in this book is a "two for one" aspect. In addition to the "hidden secrets" of Sun Tzu, the book contains what the author asserts is the most accurate translation of Sun Tzu's work ever attempted. It also provides instructions and a special password, which can be used to access additional "resource support material" on Mr. Gagliardi's website. On this site, the author and his publisher are quick to dismiss other translations as being "a waste of money" and "written by scholarly wonks who have little, if any, understanding of Sun Tzu's teachings." The author states that he crafted his own translation "...out of a desire to create an English version that was completely faithful to the original text." The author achieved his so-called "translation" using an internet encarta program, in which you can do a simplified character search in Chinese, and see some of the interpretive meanings of each pictogram. A close review of this internet text that served as the basis for the authors translation shows that it contains some character errors (which the author appears to be ignorant of). Based on his word choices, the author appears to have selectively chosen what he believes to be the correct English terms. Since he has no proper academic background in what he is attempting to do (i.e., interpreting Chinese), the results are often predictable - and often wrong.

Mr. Gagliardi's interpretive books on Sun Tzu are nothing more than dull mirrors, in which Mr. Gagliardi likes to try and cast his own shadow. In my opinion, the only way Mr. Gagliardi's Sun Tzu-esque books will achieve a measure of "timelessness" themselves is if a few hapless copies manage to get buried in the airless strata of a municipal landfill.

          Book Description

If you are one of the more that two million people who have visited the web site at iCuban.com: The Internet Cuban, you already know who these Three Guys are. If you are one of the more than six billion people alive today who have not, a little explanation is in order. They are Three Guys From MiamiTM who share a passion for good food, good conversation, and a great party. Are you are new to Cuban cuisine? If so, then you are about to enter an exciting world of flavor. Cuban cooking combines the tastes of Spain with the tropical flavors of the Caribbean. Throw in some New World spices and ingredients and a strong African influence and you have the essence of Cuban cookery. These recipes also reflect ingredients and methods that were refined by Cuban exiles after they came to the United States. Here they found an abundance of foods that were either very scarce or completely unavailable in Castro's Cuba. Fish and seafood are two examples of foods that were only rarely enjoyed in Cuba after 1959. It was also impossible to get real olive oil-an ingredient that gives so many Cuban dishes a distinctive Latin flavor. Exile in the U.S. also exposed Cubans to ingredients they never saw in Havana. Salmon is very popular with Miami Cubans, for example, but unheard of in Cuba. Wherever possible the Three Guys have made these dishes simple to prepare. You don't need to be a professional chef to create any of the recipes in this book. Best of all, you don't need to be Cuban to cook and enjoy them. If a Swedish guy from Minnesota can cook Cuban food (and he does it very well), you can too! They have madge several appearances on the Food Network. Glenn Lindgren first came to Miami in 1984 and fell in love with the city, the people, and the Cuban culture. A freelance writer by profession, Glenn documents the antics of the Three Guys From Miami in books and on the Internet. When not in Miami, Glenn and his wife live in Minnesota with their son and two daughters. Raul Musibay, born in Cayo la Rosa, near Bauta, in the province of Havana, spent one winter in New Jersey but has been a full-time Miami resident ever since. He is the manager of the Red Bird Amoco station there. He and his wife have two married children. Jorge Castillo was born and raised in Cayo la Rosa, Havana. He came to the United States via the Mariel Boatlift in 1980, then left Miami after three months to live in Iowa, where he became a respiratory therapist. Now the regional sales manager for a major medical products company, he makes his home in Miami's West Dade with his wife and two daughters.

Three Guys from Miami Cook Cuban I am married to a Cuban and have lived in Miami; my mother cooked in the latin way. This book is very authentic while making the recipes very easy. I would recommend this to everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Great recipes, not so great banter.......2007-06-08

It's odd. I object not at all to cookbooks that are infused with the author's personal stories and flair. But this one, I'd rather just have the recipes. The recipes are remarkably good, mostly quite simple to prepare, and well-written. I use them all the time.

I just pretend that the hokey over-the-top bonhomie of the authors isn't there. Mind you, this is only because I think in person, I wouldn't like them very much. But I like their food a lot, so I just focus on that.

This is a great book for Cuban cooking. It is also great for other (non-Mexican) South American recipes. Having lived in another South American country, I see many recipes that are familiar. I HIGHLY recommend this book to all who love to cook or eat Cuban food. You will not be disappointed!

Every recipe that I have made from this book has been excellent. The garlic chicken is our favorite! The anecdotes by the "3 Guys" are cute and informative. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Go Cuban with no experience necessary.......2007-05-04

Lots of color-drenched photos of the food, the ingredients, the authors and the place enliven this party approach to Cuban cooking. The authors begin with deserts - Mango Upside Down Cake, Pumpkin Flan - before moving on to drinks (Pina Colada).

Each recipe includes banter in the margins from the three authors. Occasionally there's a nugget of useful advice, but mostly these can be skipped. While there are some rich and elegant dishes (Shrimp in Cilantro Cream Sauce, Cuban Style Lobster), the guys tend to feature mostly casual traditional (Spanish Bean Soup, Rice with Seafood, Roast Pork, Fried Shredded Chicken) cooking.

The basics are here - Black Beans and Rice, Mashed Plantains, Empanadas, Tamales - and there's a chapter on grilling which includes seafood and meat kebabs. Those who've wondered what to do with guava jelly will find plenty of opportunities here from Baby Back Ribs with Guava Sauce to Guava Cake.

The recipes are straightforward and mostly simple so that even those with no experience of Cuban food can go tropical without fear

I'm a New Englander stuck in "Mud Season" and just reading this book brought me to the sunny skies, friendly faces and delectable, unforgettable foods of Florida. Can't wait to try more of the recipes!

          5 out of 5 stars Book Description.......1998-09-03

Now scattered in small communities in Northern Indiana, the Eastern Miami Indians have lived in undeserved obscurity since the 1840s. In 1791 Chief Little Turtle and the Miami inflicted the worst defeat ever of an American army by Indians. The Miami ceded most of Indiana in a series of treaties beginning after the War of 1812. Chief Richardville led Miami resistence to removal which finally took place in 1846. Half of the Miami tribe was exempted and many more returned from Kansas Territory to rebuild the home community. The Indiana Miami negotiated a new treaty in 1854 that guaranteed their way of life and slowly adapted to late 19th century American society. Hunting, fishing and casual labor continued as they had in the past, while some children were sent to far off federal Indian schools. Others began working for the many circuses that wintered in Peru, Indiana, beginning in the 1880s. Legal tragedy struck the tribe in 1897 when their treaty rights were abruptly terminated. Their effort to regain status under federal Indian law has involved them intimately in twentieth-century American Indian history. In recent years, the Indiana Miami have become more visible as they have again sought restoration of their treaty rights and have revitalized their culture. The first history of the Eastern Miami tribe, this volume is a fascinating combination of social, legal, and economic history, much enhanced by folklore and a rich series of maps and photographic images.

America's gateway to the Caribbean is one of the most diverse cities in the States, and has produced a delightful melange of foods to satisfy so many different palates. Fortunately for those of us living in colder climates, tropical and subtropical foods are increasingly common on grocery shelves, and Mmmmiami is our guide to turning those mangoes and Scotch-bonnet peppers into delicacies we could once only read about. Written by cooking teacher Carole Kotkin and Miami Herald food editor Kathy Martin, it provides clear, simple directions for 150 dishes, from the simple (good old Key Lime Pie) to the sublime (Coconut Mahi-Mahi with Passion Fruit Sauce). The wide array of flavors is especially wonderful and startling to those used to monocultural cooking; Miami cuisine is the product of many generations of interbreeding and hybrid vigor. Not to worry about tracking down the elusive pigeon peas, though--if the full range of tropical tidbits hasn't quite reached you yet, the authors kindly provide alternatives. Twenty-five menus round out this well-organized book, inspiring respectful salivation in the landlocked. --Rob Lightner

            Book Description

Caribbean food is the hot new sensation--here is what to do with mangoes in Minneapolis, papayas in Peoria. Miami chefs put the city on the culinary map in the 1980s by drawing on Cuban, Jamaican, Haitian, Peruvian, and Salvadoran cooking in a zippy fusion cooking style called New World Cuisine. Here two Miami food pros show how to incorporate these exotic produce and seasonings into everyday cooking and entertaining. Try Yuca Puffs or Coconut Shrimp in Island-Spiced Batter or main course entrees such as Roast Chicken with Savory Guava Glaze, Macho Steak, and Cashew Crusted Pompano. There are recipes for soups and stews, salads and dressings, side dishes, salsas, chutneys, and sauces, as well as twenty-eight tempting desserts including Free-Form Mango Tart, Carambola Upside-down Cake, and individual Chocolate-Cuban Coffee Souffles. The ingredient guide gives directions on buying, storing, and preparing tropical produce. Menu suggestions include wine choices.

5 out of 5 stars Mmmmmm Good, Really Good.......2006-10-13

Mmmmiami is one of the five best Florida/Gulf Coast cookbooks out there. Well, that's my opinion. I've been updating my Amazon "So You'd Like to Guides" and I have one on Key Lime Pie. Take a look at it if you want. Anyway, I've included fifty cookbooks (the maximum Amazon will allow) in all my guides, so I've had a chance to go through my collection. And quite a collection it is, I've got hundreds of cookbooks and I go through them all the time. That's my problem, how to organize them. While going through what I wanted to include in my guides, I started separating them into piles, the ones I couldn't live without and the ones, if I absolutely had to, I could give away as gifts, you know, like if we moved into a very small place.

Mmmmiami is one I could never part with. I love the food and the atmosphere of Florida and the Gulf Coast, have spent a lot of time there, as I'm a sailing lady. I'm also somewhat of a gourmet chef. I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, or galley, depending if I'm at home in the States or on our boat in the Caribbean. The recipes here will make your family, or even just yourself, if you live alone, drool. They are mouthwatering good and that's the truth.

We've been cooking the pork dishes with the salsas and chutneys. Easy to do several at a time and have nice summer food without reheating the kitchen. An even better collection than I first thought.

As a former Miamian now living in Virginia, reading this wonderful new book was like taking a trip to my hometown. It has many delicious recipes that seem to me to capture the true essence of tropical cuisine. Try making the Hot and Tangy Black Bean Dip for an easy (and low fat) snack that will wake up your taste buds.I prepared the Calabazas and Sweet Potato Soup for company and received raves reviews from my guests. It's really simple to make and everyone will think you worked all day cooking it.Mmmmiami also offers the reade an interesting history of the growth of So. Florida and the influence that the influx of Latin tourists, businesspeople and immigrants have had on the culture. The book's witty and clever text explains why tropical cuisine is now the hottest food trend sweeping the country.I think this wonderful book should be a staple (like black beans and rice)in the house of any serious cook. I recommend Mmmmiami highly.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful book from a true food professional........1999-01-24

A wonderful book if I still lived in Miami. The availability of some of the products might be limited to Florida and major metropolitan areas. I would love Carole to publish something from her early cooking classes. I rely on those recipes on a regular basis.

5 out of 5 stars Mmmmm Mmmmm Good.......1998-12-18

Reading through MMMiami is almost as much fun as actually tasting the results. This readable collection of recipes showcases the best of Miami's tropical and latin cuisine with an emphasis on using only the freshest ingredients available. Sprinkled throughout with helpful hints, historical tidbits, and fun food facts, MMMiami is filled with easy to understand recipes that are sure crowd pleasers. The techniques and tips offer time-saving shortcuts that will help not only for the recipes contained here, but for all of your daily cooking tasks. The authors succeed in sharing their knowledge and love of Florida foods to the rest of us who (until now) have only dreamt of being able to concoct a coconut flan. The chocolate-pecan torte is worth the price of the book alone.

              Book Description

After almost two centuries of on-and-off resistance to white encroachment on Indian lands, a band of Ohio Indians attacked and almost destroyed the army of the infant U.S.A. The battle for the Indian village of Kekionga, unmentioned in any history textbook, stunned President Washington and Congress and provoked both a change in military policy and the first legislative investigation of an executive department under the Constitution. This history of the relations between Native Americans and European settlers, principally during the colonial and revolutionary periods, focuses on the clash of two very different civilizations in the struggle for control of the land. It also sets in world perspective the savagery of the French and Indian Wars, disposing of the myth that brutally inhumane treatment of the enemy was characteristic only of Indian fighting methods. Subsequent to the Indians' supression after Kekionga, government and private indifference to Indian rights and gross mistreatment persisted until the last quarter of the 20th century.

              4 out of 5 stars A good vivid introduction in Indian/white relations........1998-10-09

Wilbur Edel's book "Kekionga" is in fact not a detailed description of the worst defeat of the American army led by general St Clair against the Native Americans in the late 18th century. The story of the battle itself merely takes one page in this book. So people mainly interested in pure military history will not find a satisfactory answer. But I don't thing Edel, who is a Professor Emeritus of Political Science, intended to write a book focusing only on the military aspects of this dramatic battle , which is in fact not that well known in American history.

The author prefers a global approach of this battle which was the direct result of white settlers penetrating in the Ohio-lands of the Wabash Indian tribes after the American War of Independence.

Edel clearly explains the relation between Native Americans and their white opponents from the start of white colonisation untill the present. He indicates the role of the different European nations in the New World who played a important role in the Indian-white relations during the 18th and 19th century. So one can learn in fact each nation (European and Native American as well) had their own hidden political agenda. For example during the War of Independence, both Americans and English tried to use Native Americans for their cause. Indians tried to use them to obtain better trade-goods. Some tribes tried to form alliances with Europeans to protect their homelands from invasion of other Europeans. The author gives a clear inside in this processes which indicates that international politics in that period do not differ that much from the way international politics are run nowadays.

In a vivid description he brings back to life the voices of the people who played a decisive role in this confrontation. Fortunately he retains from giving too many details and keeps this book to the point. Nevertheless he is very accurate and each statement is linked to a bibliographical note.

I enjoyed reading this book, which gave me (as a European who is not that familiar with the American history) also a better understanding of the sometimes stressed relations between the American Federation and the individual States of the Union. In my opinion this book can be used as a standard introduction to understand the complex relationship between the Native Americans and the American Federation.
