Book Description

Initially referred to as the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF), the F-22 was designed to meet a USAF requirement for 750 new fighters to replace the F-15 Eagle. Work began in the early 1980s, and competition selection resulted in orders for flying demonstration prototypes of the YF-22 and the Northrop YF-23. The first of two prototypes was flown on 29th September 1990, and extensive testing and evaluation took place during that decade. In 1993 an air-to-ground attack role using precision-guided munitions was added to the original air superiority role, and the designation has been changed to F/A-22 to reflect this. The F-22 is designed to supercruise at up to Mach 1.5 without use of the afterburner, and its unusual layout is designed for agility as well as to incorporate stealth characteristics. A planned two-seat trainer version, the F-22B was cancelled, but production deliveries are now taking place, with service introduction planned for 2005. Author Jay Miller has followed the program closely to produce an extensively researched and well-illustrated review of this topical new fighter in the well-established and acclaimed Aerofax style and depth.

5 out of 5 stars Supperb book, probably the best in this series.......2006-07-11

The story so far of the F-22A. The develloping story from the early days till present times is remarkable and really made me read page after page. The cherry on top of the cake are the photos - they are almost all full color. Previous titles were mostly black and white with a small center color section, this one is totally color except some archive pics of develloping mock ups that are b&w. But these are a minority. Jay Miller made an excellent job tracing the story of this awesome aircraft. Modern jet fans will love for sure. Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars Of course we need this fighter (are you kidding?).......2005-11-15

We need to build more than just a mere 100-200 fighters.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book on a Questionable Airplane.......2005-10-14

Jay Miller tends to do good work, but the books are seldom balanced - always coming off a bit like a cheerleader for whatever subject he is writing about. A case in point is the F/A-22 book. The airplane is undoubtedly pushing the state of the art, but it has had a constant string of troubles that are not addressed in this book. Then the entire policy issue of why the USAF needs this airplane, or how 100 F-22s are going to replace 1,000 F-15s and F-16s. Still, if you are interested in the F-22, this is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Great F/A-22 Raptor book!.......2005-07-23

I am a hugh Raptor supporter. Personally, I feel we need this fighter. This book is a detailed analysis of this great fighter.

When I received my copy, I read it all the way through. The book is written in great detail by Miller. There is a lot of color and b&w photos taken by Miller himself and through Lockheed Martin archives, many never before released. The pics are crystal clear and many of later Raptors based at Nellis and Tyndall AFB. Text is full of details that can be released and each photo have captions for it.

In addition to sections about the YF-23 the proposed naval F-22, adn the FB-22, the book also includes part of the original Aerofax YF-22 text that Miller wrote with Richard Abrams back in the early 1990's to refreash the history of the Raptor back in the ATF (Advanced Tactical Fighter) competition days. I also have the older YF-22 Aerofax book and the good news here is there is new photos and captions of the YF-22 prototype included in this new book.

My only wish is that this edition included the DIOT&E (Dedicated Initial Operational Test & Evaluation) results and photos of the Raptors based at Langley AFB, VA that were starting to be delivered in June 2005 Both events started after this book was printed . It would have been great to include some of the results and pilot and maintainer perspectives from the results of these tests (it is reported that the F/A-22 Raptor kicked everyone's A$$ that dared go up against it). Perhaps Miller or another great aviation author Bill Sweetman will include this section and photos in their next Raptor book. Regardless, a great book and highly recommended to add to your aviation library.

5 out of 5 stars Good Writing, Good Pictures, Amazing Detail.......2005-07-21

By any standards the F/A-22 Raptor is the world's most advanced fighter. At at least $200 million each, it is certainly the most expensive. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, is it needed?

The plane that eventually became the F/A-22 began as a planned replacement for the F-15 and F-16 as they were reaching the end of their useful lives. The thinking about the plane began as early as 1969. Now in 2005 they are being delivered to the Air Force.

This is a beautiful book that starts with the early thinking, goes through the competition, initial testing, early production troubles, engine development, everything and in great detail. There's a bit about the competing F-23 fighter, which also looks like it would have been a pretty good bird.

There are some artist's concepts of a proposed F/B-22 bomber version and a comment that Northrop was dusting off their F-23 design to make it a bomber. A bomber like this might finally enable the Air Force to have a self-defending bomber like they thought they had with the B-17.

Do we need the F/A-22? -- I think that yes, we probably do. The United States professes to be a peaceful nation, but we go to war a lot. And if we do, I'd want our warfighters to have the best possible equipment. For at least the next twenty years, that's the F/A-22.

    Product Description

The incredible story of America's newest fighter aircraft, the F-22 Raptor, is told in words and beautiful photographs in this up-to-date CD-ROM disc. The F-22 is the air-dominance fighter of the 21st Century. It has been named the Raptor by the U.S. Air Force. It packs a mix of maneuverability, stealth, and general lethality that no other fighter in the world can equal. The F-22 is an air superiority aircraft with a capability to deliver air-to-ground weapons. Advanced technology being developed for the F-22 makes it a very ambitious, challenging program, probably the most challenging program in recent times, according to the Department of Defenses (DOD) Defense Science Board. The most significant features include supercruise, the ability to fly efficiently at supersonic speeds without using fuel-consuming afterburners; low observability to adversary systems that have the objective of locating and shooting the F-22; and integrated avionics to significantly improve the pilots battlefield awareness. The F-22 program began the engineering and manufacturing development phase of the acquisition process in 1991. The F-22 design with its stealth, supercruise and integrated avionics provide a high degree of assurance that a "dog-fight" will not be the typical experience for combat air force pilots. If close air-to-air combat ever becomes necessary, other fighters don't stand a chance because of the Raptor's enhanced maneuverability. The key to the F-22 Raptor's ability to maneuver better than conventional fighters is a system called thrust vectoring. Thrust vectoring is controlled by the pilot through the flight controls and gets the F-22 quickly from one maneuver to another. The vectoring nozzles on the two Pratt & Whitney F119 engines are controlled by the same flight control system that operates the horizontal tails, rudders and wing surfaces. Thrust vectoring harnesses the power from the rear of the jet by using the thrust vectoring nozzles (on the engines) and opens the envelope where other fighters would stall. For the most part, the enhanced maneuverability features of the F-22! are transparent to the pilot. The integrated avionics on an F-22 Raptor are designed to gather data and give it to a pilot using concise, consistent methods. Data is prioritized as the battle develops and increases the pilot's situational awareness. "Three key sensor platforms; radar, electronic warfare and communications, navigation and identification combine to form the advanced integrated avionics suite that provides the F-22 pilot with unprecedented capabilities," said Bruce Ammerman, Boeing F-22 Avionics director. Boeing is responsible for integrating the F-22 Raptor's advanced avionics and has been testing software packages in its Avionics Integration Lab since 1998, on its 757 Flying Test Bed since March 1999, and on the F-22 Raptor Flight Test aircraft since January 2001, according to Boeing officials. This incredible CD-ROM is packed with over 16,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software - allowing direct viewing on Windows and Macintosh systems. The Acrobat cataloging technology adds enormous value and uncommon functionality to this impressive collection of government documents and material. Our news and educational discs are privately compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents - they are not produced by the federal government. 5 out of 5 stars Excellent Work.......2007-08-12

This is a really excellent book wriiten from engineer's point of view for the development of F-22. Besides providing with plenty of information about the schedule milesotnes, also describes the Air Force's ingenious dicretions to stipulate the requirements for next generation of air dominance fighter. And most of all, points out the Lockheed's advantages in project management and mutual technologies are the keys to the winning of ATF contract. From the appendix, the author demonstrates his capability to depict the complex rules of stealth in such concise but simple ways for reader to understand. Rare and good book.

5 out of 5 stars Very well writen.......2000-06-12

You can tell this book is writen by an engineer whom knows his work. So many books are writren by " laymen " whom don't know much about the subject But this book is well worth the cost I recommend it to anybody

4 out of 5 stars Absorbing and easy to read.......2005-01-20

Bill Sweetman wrote this book back in 1997 when the F/A-22 Raptor program was still in its maturing phase, but he has collected an incredible array of technical information which he presents with exceptional clarity. The only drawback is the premature time of the book's publication date and the author's avoidance to delve into numbers and minor details. Ths book though is very interesting and gives some little known facts about modern aerial tactics and the revolutionary capabilities of F/A-22 in this field. The photos are colored, large size and excellent, although many of them are taken from the Lockheed Martin production lines instead of the air.

      5 out of 5 stars fascinating book.......2002-10-27

Extremely in-depth information on the F-22 (answered many questions of mine, like why there seemed to be notches between the control surfaces). Ample info on the avionics (generally hard to find on this aircraft), with a narrative describing their employment. Great photos of an F-22 under construction. Rare photos of the other lesser known ATF entries are shown (check out Boeing's... same intake as the X-32).

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent F-22 Book!.......2002-04-17

I have the hardback edition (which is basically the same as the softcover edition in content), and I highly recommend this book if you are:

      1) An F-22 Raptor enthusiast/supporter/fan etc.
      2) A modern aviation buff. And....
      3) Interested in advanced aircraft technology.

Author Bill Sweetman has been one of my favorite aviation authors for many years now because he has a nack of writing and presenting aircrafts in narrative form. He also is one of the few aviation authors I know of that actually is present at many of the unveiling and briefings of many of today's modern military aircraft, so when he writes, he's presenting facts and/or opinions based on facts from good sources. This book is no exception.

Along with is delightful insights on the F-22, he presents many then not-so-common photos of the YF-22/F-22 and conceptual artworks. All this combined makes this book, although a little dated (1998), still a must have reference for one's aviation library.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Aviation Reporting by Bill Sweetman.......2001-12-13

For many years, aviation journalist Bill Sweetman has been on the cutting edge, reporting on new aircraft even before they make their first flight. "F-22 Raptor" is no exception.

"F-22 Raptor" is the story of the development of America's new air superiority fighter. Like most Bill Sweetman books, it combines gorgeous and rare color photographs with descriptions of the technology that goes into building this new wonder plane. His facts are good, and he has a knack for discovering rare photogaphs and secret information.

Technophiles and aviation enthusiasts should not miss this wonderful little book.

4 out of 5 stars Most up-to-date reference on the F-22........1999-03-30

Highly recommended for those interested in modern aviation. I've followed this plane ever since I saw one of its first flights in 1990. Well written, with good photography, this book covers background and development, the YF-22 and -23 prototype competition, and the production F-22. I particularly liked the coverage of the advanced tactical fighter prosposals from other manufacturers, and the detailed differences between the prototype and production models. The book has a slightly breathless quality, as if the author couldn't wait to get it into print. Sweetman is good at that, though- check out his book "Aurora" in which he pieces together a compelling picture of the top-secret hypersonic spy plane from very little hard information. Much new technology to cover here. There is a 1998 article on the F-22 in "Air and Space Smithsonian" that is a good complement to this book.

          Book Description

The Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, about to be launched as America's premier Air Dominance Fighter, will replace the vaunted F-15C Eagle as the world's foremost fighter aircraft. Once operational, it will be the swiftest, stealthiest, and deadliest plane in the skies, ready to out fly and out fight any opponent. Its Supercruise feature allows it to exceed the speed of sound without afterburners-an aviation first. Its radar profile is nearly as small as that of the stealth-dedicated F-117A Nighthawk. And its First-Look, First-Kill capability makes it virtually impervious to enemy counter-strike. Profusely illustrated, this eye-opening volume documents every stage of our military's quest for the next Air dominance Fighter, while illuminating every aspect of the fierce warbird that ended that search...the F-22 Raptor. From drawing board to wind tunnel, test flight to tactical deployment, here is the most extensive survey available today of the fighter that will escort our armed forces into the 21st Century.

2 out of 5 stars Press Release Redone.......2003-07-27

Absolutely no original research as near as I can tell. It appears the author just copied the press material Lockheed sent him and added some pictures Lockheed sent him - no original photography either. And like the other McGraw Hill books in this series, it is on marginal paper. I can not recommend this book unless you find one in the second-hand store.

          3 out of 5 stars Sorry, but it's just a compilation..........2001-12-25

One of several books oh F-22 I'v got from Amazon. Frankly, I expect much more. It's just a compilation of beautiful Eric Hehz article in Lockheed's Code One Magazine and Lockheed media guide. Also, Hehs article is much more informative on development history. You could spend much less money, trying to print those sources after having find them on the net (they are available). I liked Sweetman's book more, but Aronstain's is simply the best (and expensive, in that way). But - let it be on your bookshelf. As for me, I found rare pic of pair of YF-23 there. BTW, N-14 was not internal Northrop name for YF-23. It was for B-2.

3 out of 5 stars Hardly more than Lockheed/Martin's press package.......2000-11-05

I had very high expectations for this book, given that it was announced as the premier volume in a McGraw-Hill series, endorsed by USAF historian Walter Boyne. What I found was a book that appeared to be a rewrite of Lockheed/Martin's press package on the F-22, often not carefully edited (there are lots of misspellings and fragmented sentences).

Also, having read Bill Sweetman's MBI book on the F-22 and the outstanding Aronstein, Hirschberg, and Piccirillo book (now there is an excellent book!) before this one, I guess Steve Pace's book was handicapped from the start.

In summary, if you can buy only one book on the F-22, this one is for you. On the other hand, if you have a deep interest in the topic, this one may not add as much as you would hope for.

          5 out of 5 stars Author's Justification of Statement in F-22 Raptor.......2000-05-13

According to Dr. Raymond L. Puffer, Historian, Air Force Flight Test Center History Office, Edwards AFB, California, on 1 February 1975, USAF Major Rogers Smith flew the Streak Eagle (an F-15A) to its eighth official world time-to-climb record in 17 days. This was in the 3,000 meter catagory, which he achieved in 207.80 seconds. After a take-off role of 400 feet, he accelerated to 420 mph, then pulled 5 Gs to a vertical climb. He passed through Mach number 1.0 during the climb. This justifies my claim - it's really too bad the man tossed his copy of the book out.

          5 out of 5 stars As an F-15 pilot..........2000-03-29

The F-15C actually exceeds 1.0 Mn in a vertical climb! In fact, the older F-15A can do so as well.

I found the book to be most informative. I can't wait to fly the '22.

4 out of 5 stars Review of the 32 page book "The F/A 22 Raptor".......2007-10-05

Explained in very simple terms and concepts for the younger readers, well illustrated. Only real error is on page 7 where the picture that goes with the F-15 caption is that of a Navy F-14 Tomcat.

              Book Description

Tracing the movements of the Sephardic Jews to the Balkans - following their expulsion from Spain during the Inquisition - Schwartz draws on place names, historical chronicles, epitaphs, folk ballads, banned books, and the media. He explores the travails, and remarkable cultural achievements of these communities who, hundreds of years after the trauma of forced exile, were almost entirely destroyed in the Holocaust. The richness of the literature, poetry, myth, and printing, and the intermingling of Orthodox, Jewish, Catholic, and Muslim communities in the Balkans is explored - from Sabbatai Zvi, who declared himself the Messiah in the 17th century, and who, under pain of death chose conversion to Islam; the rare and wondrous scripts of Aramaic languages known almost from the beginning of human history; the evolution of the Jewish mercantile industry; to the 'Renaissance Jewish Traveller' Abraham Kohen Herrera, a convert under duress during the Inquisition who later discovered his Jewish heritage through mysticism, and who may have been the model for Shylock in Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice. This is not only an historical analysis, but also a personal journey. The author's poignant descriptions of attempted pilgrimages to Jewish cemeteries and synagogues throughout the Balkans are testament to his yearning for historical pride and proof of existence.
