Book Description
The fundamental characteristics of a ships design, and how they affect its behaviour at sea are of crucial importance to many people involved in the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of all marine vessels. Naval architects and those working in ship design need to understand these principles in depth. Marine engineers must likewise recognise the degree to which their activities are influenced and bounded by these principles. Finally, senior crew both Ships Engineers and Commanders need an understanding of the principles of naval architecture in order to properly fulfil their duties. This book offers a clear and concise introduction to the subject and is of great value to both students and practising professionals in all of the above fields.
* Covers introductory level courses in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering
* Updated to cover key developments including double-hulled tankers
* Fully revised fourth edition accompanied by exercises and worked solutions for the first time
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource.......2007-01-28
This work provides a qualitative approach to naval architecture, and is best coupled with "Introduction to Naval Architecture" (Gillmer and Johnson, Naval Institute Press). All information is well-presented, detailed, and organized. Although a mathematical interpretation of naval architecture is lacking within this resource, such information is adequately replaced by vivid description and the unique viewpoint of E.C. Tupper. This work is highly recommended for those individuals seeking a basic, non-mathematic approach to ship design; otherwise, the purchase of the Gillmer and Johnson reference is also necessary.
Please note: This is my opinion as a high school Senior completing an independent research project within the field of naval architecture.

Introduction To Naval Architect.......2007-09-23
If you r looking for an entry point for Naval Architect this is the book to do so.
A broad overview on Naval Architect topics that will highlight all its various areas of knowledge
Excellent Resource.......2007-01-28
"Introduction to Naval Architecture" provides a unique approach to ship design. Although this approach is quantitative and mathematically "intense", Gillmer also provides qualitative description within certain chapters. Ultimately, for the purposes of clarity and a definitive understanding of basic ship design, this work is best coupled with "Introduction to Naval Architecture" (E.C. Tupper), which provides a "descriptive" perspective. The Gillmer and Johnson referenece is highly recommended for those individuals who have prior knowledge of naval architecture, and a strong foundation in mathematics; otherwise, the aforementioned coupling of two references becomes necessary.
Please note: This is my opinion as a high school Senior completing an independent research project within the field of naval architecture.
Introduction to Naval Architecture .......2005-10-12
Purchased for my high school senior to do an independent study in Naval Architecture. The math was more advanced than he was prepared for, but it provides the a reasonable introduction to basic concepts he needs to understand.
Great for novices and experts.......2003-04-22
This is a great text for everyone. I think Zubaly's Applied Naval Architecture does a slightly better job in presenting the coefficients, but in every other respect, this text is superior. Zubaly and this text are weak in the details of seakeeping, but there are several other specific seakeeping texts, namely Dynamics of Marine Vehicles by Battacharia (I know I misspelled his name)
The most complete NA reference available.......2001-10-24
With the possible exception of SNAME's "Principles of Naval Architecture," "Introduction to Naval Architecture" is the perfect introductory text for any naval architecture/marine engineering student. It includes brief but dense overviews of hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, ship structure, resistance, and propulsion. While there are more detailed texts for each of the above topics (again, SNAME's PNA does a good job as a reference, but not so much as a text, and Harvald's "Resistance and Propulsion of Ships" is THE text for that topic), it is the perfect source for equations, derivations, illustrations, graphs, and, most importantly, example problems. It's very hard to find any clear examples of NA problems in most texts - the examples in this book are worked through step by step, which makes comprehension a breeze. If you're studying or working in the field of naval architecture, this book is a necessary addition to your reference library.

Excellent Primer!.......2005-10-01
When it comes to Naval, or even civilian/land engineering systems and process primers this book is one of the best I've seen. I'm not talking about all that squishy HR/Management stuff. I'm talking about your hard core physical science stuff! Want to learn how air conditioning works? It's in there. Engines and motors? Yep. Steam cycle? Covered. Electricity? It's there from Ohm's law onward. The electrical section is the only section I thought could have been a tad bit better. They use the original formula and there's an easier, more memorable way for non-electricians to remember it, but the basics are still there.
I can't think of any engineering/practical physical science book I've ever seen that explained things better in fewer words. And for the science-challenged, there are clear illustrations and pictures! I bought three of these for my young adult kids, and they love 'em!
This is a reference book.......2000-06-08
This book provides valuable information regarding naval engineering. Its technical approach helps one understanding the basic principles of warship propulsion. If someone is looking for technical data on naval propulsion this is the right choice.

Book Description
A comprehensive history of the human sciences--psychology, sociology, anthropology, economics, and political science--from their precursors in early human culture to the present. This erudite yet accessible volume in Norton's highly praised History of Science series tracks the long and circuitous path by which human beings came to see themselves and their societies as scientific subjects like any other. Beginning with the Renaissance's rediscovery of Greek psychology, political philosophy, and ethics, Roger Smith recounts how the human sciences gradually organized themselves around a scientific conception of psychology, and how this trend has continued to the present day in a circle of interactions between science and ordinary life, in which the human sciences have influenced and been influenced by popular culture.

An Impressive Accomplishment.......2006-11-12
Contrary to another Amazon reviewer, I didn't find the prose boring, even if one expects little from a reference work like this. Indeed, it could have been dry as hay. But Smith crafts a convincing narrative out of his materials, no small feat in a work of this length. In its scope and balance, this work is too impressive to be given just two stars. Instead, I think the following conclusion from a review in The Journal of Interdisciplinary History is more on target: "Yet, in spite of the daunting nature of his task, Smith must be judged overall to have written a successful synthetic treatment of his many-faceted subject. The writing is compelling and often sparkling. The thinking is always informed. This is a book that serves many functions: It should be a standard reference, a work that one dips into for the sheer pleasure of reading bits and pieces, and an essential study of the problems underlying a history of the human sciences."
the most boring book in creation!.......2005-01-15
This is a big, thick, very boring book from a man who nevertheless knows his subject well. It's basically a history of how the "human sciences" (sociology, anthropology, psychology, economics, etc.) got started and developed over the years. There are no graphs or pictures; it's all narrative.
Alas! This is a aggravatingly stuffy slog, although, as I say, you can't complain about its thoroughness. The problem, in my view, is neither the subject matter nor the approach: it's Smith's writing style. If you don't actually have the book in front of you, it's possible to convince yourself that it might be worth your time. No. So dry and lifeless is the writing that the book's other merits (e.g., the versatility and erudition with which the different disciplines are interwoven) never have a chance to see the light of day.
True, I was expecting a lot from it: the development of the social sciences is a very fecund subject; I guess I was hoping it would be as engaging, as riveting, and as thought-provoking as, for example, one of Boorstin's outings.
And what a shame, too, since this could have been written so much better. In a way, I'm hoping hope that somebody here will rush to this book's defense, since the author obviously put a ton of work into it. But even so, that wouldn't make it a better read.
In short: a fertile subject, but one that, sadly, still awaits a magisterial treatment.

Book Description
Like wolf restoration activities in the West, the proposal to reintroduce wolves into the Adirondacks has generated intense public debate. The idea of returning top predators to settled landscapes raises complicated questions on issues ranging from property rights to wildlife management to obligations to present and future generations.
Wolves and Human Communities brings together leading thinkers and writers from diverse fields-including Timothy Clark, Daniel Kemmis, L. David Mech, Mary Midgley, Ernest Partridge, Steward T.A. Pickett, Joseph Sax, Rodger Schlickeisen, and others-to address the complex ethical, biological, legal, and political concerns surrounding wolf reintroduction. Contributors specifically explore the social, cultural, and ecological values that come into play in the debate, as they examine:
- the views of stakeholders in the Adirondack decision
- historical trends in public perception of restoration
- the legal and policy context for species preservation, and the challenges to the current system of property law
- biological and political lessons learned from Yellowstone, Isle Royale, and the Great Lakes states
- the meaning of wildness, both in ourselves and the wolf
.
The final chapter by Niles Eldredge takes the point of view of evolutionary time and ecological scale, challenging us to develop a new consciousness regarding our position in the natural world.
Wolves and Human Communities offers a thought-provoking examination of interactions between human and wild communities, and represents an important contribution to debates over species reintroduction for policymakers, researchers, ecologists, sociologists, lawyers, ethicists, philosophers, and local residents.
Customer Reviews:
Thought provoking.......2003-04-20
An excellent book for those interested not only in wolf conservation, but for those interested in the ongoing debate over the role of humans in the natural community. The various authors each bring in uniqe perspectives and ideas about what should and should not be human responsibilites towards shaping the ecosystems we live in. I was impressed with the great variety of opinions and ideas that are in this book regarding wolf conservation. This book definitely made me think about my ethical, social, and political values and will no doubt continue to help shape these values in the future when I re-read the essays in here.
Informative commentary by leading contributors and experts.......2001-05-23
Wolves And Human Communities: Biology, Politics, And Ethics is a compendium of informative commentary by leading contributors and experts in the field of wolf restoration activities in the American west. These essays address complex ethical, biological, legal, and political concerns surrounding wolf reintroduction. The contributors specifically comment on the social, cultural, and ecological values that are a part of the on-going national debate. Specially addressed are the views of stakeholders in the Adirondack decision; historical trends in public perception of wolf restoration; the legal and policy context for species preservation; biological and political lessons gleaned from the Yellowstone, Isle Royal, and Great Lakes states wolf restoration experiments; and the meaning of wilderness in both humans the wolves. Wolves And Human Communities is a seminal, significant, highly recommended contribution that will be greatly appreciated by environmental and animal rights activists, ecologists, as well as wolf population and habitat restorationists.

Book Description
In Bloodrites of the Post-Structuralists provocative theorist Anne Norton presents an alternative narrative of the history of the world She starts by reminding us of the real interplay between words (laws, scriptures, myths, and history) and the world of flesh (of bloodties and bloodshed, skin color and sexuality). The seemingly precious and all too literary constructs of the poststructuralists really do act on the body politic. The book is written on three historical sites: the revolutions in England and France, the struggle against colonialism, and the modern liberal order. In this telling, we see liberal constitutions born in Terror and regicide, we see a word, a text, a document, write "slave" on the darkness of the body, we see the guillotine release the power in the blood, and we hear the words that declare a people free. Norton re-reads and re-writes foundational myths from Abraham and Isaac on the mountain top in the Bible to legends of the American Revolution. This lyrical and mesmerizingbook serves, in its way, as a catalog of oppressions, and a history of the justifications oppressors have made for injustices. It also makes clear that that these oppressions and justifications continue on today, as certainly as they did in any point in history. Defying easy categorization, Bloodrites of the Post-Structuralists is the ultimate challenges to all those who claim that history has come to end, or that life is classifiable or uncomplex, or that we understand all we need to understand about the story of Western History.
