Book Description

When Union General George McClellan marched toward the Confederate capital of Richmond in 1862, he encountered the Warwick River "where it wasn't supposed to be," causing a delay in his strategy and criticism from Northern press. McClellan was following a map created by an esteemed and experienced topographer, but the map was wrong! The map McClellan was following, reproduced in Great Maps of the Civil War, shows lines in pencil along the true course of the Warwick, apparently drawn after it was too late.

Most people interested in the Civil War are fascinated by maps - for what they tell about the battles, for what they tell about the terrain, and in some cases for their artistic beauty. But maps reproduced in books have limitations and there is not a good way of preserving a map collection - until now. Fifteen chapters in Great Maps of the Civil War each contain two or three maps that can be pulled out of a pocket. Ten of the maps are 18" x 24"; others are smaller. In addition to a discussion of the battles and the roles of the maps, the book tells about Civil War mapmakers and the methods they used.

Stunningly designed, this unique full-color book will make a significant addition to the library of any Civil War enthusiast or those who are fascinated by maps and mapmakers.

5 out of 5 stars very informative.......2007-05-25

this book will be convienent for any civil war buff, historian, and wargamer. I really like the way the maps also can be removed to look
at better, this comes in handy when reading other civil war sources
for ease of reference or when visiting the actual sites. It also explained
the map making process at the time and the various methods used, with the
mention of many of the cartographers of the time, and in both armies.
I personally wish they would make more of these books on different eras of history

5 out of 5 stars Great Maps of the Civil War: Pivotal Battles and Campaigns Featuring 32 Removable Maps.......2007-04-12

I purchased the book for my son-in-law, who is a Civil War buff, mainly for the removable maps. I was quite pleased to see that it will be not only a nice addition to his collection but also is a handsome tabletop book. Since he and his family live near sites of some of the great battles they, they'll be able to take a map with them when they visit. My grandson, aged 11, should also enjoy this as the commentaries bring the War to life. Now I'm going to have to buy one for us as my husband wanted to keep it for his own enjoyment!

5 out of 5 stars Great Maps.......2007-02-21

I gave this book to my husband for his birthday and he was ecstatic. He has studied each map and marked them with colored markers. He emerges from its covers about twice a week to thank me again for getting it for him. I don't think I've ever given him a birthday present that he has liked more.

5 out of 5 stars A Living History.......2007-02-14

I'm a child of the South and relish Civil War history. This book is just great in all respects. The text is clear and readable, tells the story well, and the maps are wonderful. The book itself is beautifully printed and the pages are substantial. It's a real treasure to have it in our library.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful, but a little thin..........2006-01-27

A common problem I experience when reading a book about a Civil War campaign is that it invariably lacks detailed maps. Battle Maps of the Civil War makes a great companion volume when confronted with this problem. It covers important battles from both the Eastern and Western theaters, but it is by no means comprehensive. The overview of the East covers from 1st Manassas to the Wilderness and Spotsylvania, while the discussion of the West begins with Shiloh, extending through the Atlanta Campaign to Nashville. Each campaign receives a two page write-up accompnied by period photos and maps, some excellent Don Troiani prints, and a terrific illustration of each battlefield that covers the highlights of the fight. Additionally, it has a short section on Naval strategy, and small bios of the more famous Union and Confederate General Officers. The book is a little thin, with no coverage of 1865, but overall a great reference.

5 out of 5 stars awesome illustrations.......2000-11-11

This book is a piece of art. Unfortunately it does not contain a lot of battles, just the major ones.

1 out of 5 stars Crudely drawn maps ruin experience.......2003-11-26

Although this book has a large number of battles listed, the descriptions are overly brief and the maps are poorly hand-drawn. I can imagine the author literally drew these on paper napkins and scanned them in. The lack detail can be illustrated with an example: Antietam is described in 6 paragraphs and two maps of 2.5 x 4 inches each. Only corps-level unit dispositions are shown. [I was an idiot for neglecting to review the single sample shown by Amazon before purchasing.] Anyone expecting the quality of the West Point Atlas or the American Heritage battle maps will be sorely disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Battle maps enhanced with a "user friendly" index.......2001-03-12

In Battle Maps Of The Civil War, Harold Holmquest has assembled easy-to-use references to 131 battles and engagements of the American civil war as portrayed on 117 maps. These superbly drawn black-and-white maps identify positions and troop movements in a move-by-move presentation and are coordinated with brief text relating significant tactical actions by letters (A, B, C, etc.), along the battle's result. These battle maps are arranged in chronological order and include minor engagements not generally included in most Civil War histories. A "must" for all serious Civil War buffs, these informative battle maps are enhanced with a "user friendly" index.

4 out of 5 stars A worthy addition to your library.......2001-03-10

It seems that interest in the Civil War never ends. Not only does each month bring another book on some facet of the war but Civil War reenactments are flourshing around the country. This book is a good reference book of 131 battles, engagements, assults, combat, or siege portrayed on 117 maps. It is a month-by-month atlas that documents the progression of the war during the entire four-year period. Using primary reference materials and Official Records, the author has included a brief text or narrative to go with the maps that indicate positions and troop movements. The result is a highly readable account of particular battles, with tactical actions and results, that is easy to understand and relate to the overall history of the War. The account of the battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia, in 1864, which resulted in the death of 13,000 Union and 5,000 Confederate soldiers, reminded me again of the terrible cost of this war.

In addition to the maps and discussion of the battles there is a legend and index, alphabetical by location, with a list of all battles and the names of all commanders mentioned in the book.

While the book does not describe every battle of the War, the one's dealt with are clearly described and the maps are uncluttered and easily read. This book will appeal to any reader interested in the battles and tactics of the Civil War. It is a worthy addition to the never-ending study of our nation's march to the edge of the abyss.

        Book Description

This is the first Civil War atlas to depict multiple aspects of the war's action, month by month, from April 1861 through May 1865. Fifty full-color maps--one for each month of the war--convey as never before a sense of the war's progression on all fronts--battles, sieges, infantry campaigns, naval operations, cavalry raids, and even shifts of national frontiers. One set of additional maps provides background into the political state of the nation as it headed into the war; another set covers the war as it was fought in the western reaches of the country. The text on facing pages supports each map with extra facts and figures, while the atlas's big 14 x 10 format allows for exceptional line clarity, color, and detail.

        * Fifty maps show the events, including relatively small engagements, that took place in the successive months of the war.

        * Thirteen additional maps focus on the Far West theater.

        * Six maps, beginning with November 1860, detail the political situation in the months leading up to the war's outbreak. They show such information as free and slave states; secessionist sentiment; and the results of the 1860 census and the presidential election of the same year.

        * Events of each month, including such details as dates, place-names, commanders, and statistics on troop strength and casualties, are summarized in the text facing each map.

        * Confederate and Union positions, as well as towns that were occupied, raided, or burned, are clearly marked.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Specialist Atlas.......2007-01-24

The University of Georgia Press Atlas of the Civil War, Month by Month, written by Mark Swanson is a fine book. It is quite unlike the other Civil War atlases out there, which it does not replace, in that it has no battle maps of Gettysburg, etc. with many units or hills marked on them. So if you want to see how the Second Battle of Bull Run or the clash at Mortons Ford unfolded this is not the atlas for you.

What it does do well, which the other atlases never try, is to give you the broad picture of how the entire war was being simultaneously played out across the southeastern third of the country in any given month from 1861 to 1865. Basically the same map of the Confederacy and the border regions appears on the right side with the relevant locations identified. A text on the left side describes the various actions and developments marked on the map on a state-by-state basis.

The text is relatively concise but clear and helpful. The author did not attempt to uncover new ground, but he followed the established line of major historians. For example, in his introduction describing the origins of the Civil War Swanson deftly summarizes the standard interpretation of all contemporary leading historians that slavery was the principal issue. This is not an all-purpose atlas but an atlas for the serious student of the Civil War. It deserves to be rated as five stars.

4 out of 5 stars Civil War Maps You Can Really Use.......2006-09-05

Mark Swanson has given us a very useful overview of the Civil War, emphasis on useful. This book is brief, giving maps of each month of the war with descriptive text on the facing page. Thus teachers, professors, travelers, and anyone seeking quick information will profit. Even veteran Civil War buffs will find information they did not know about. As anyone familiar with the war knows, there are many huge volumes covering virtually every aspect of the war, so this book is welcome since there is nothing else like it. Certainly more detail could have been given such as on the causes of the war. Yet Swanson is right in discussing slavery as the major cause, leaving other issues to other books. I would note that without slavery there would have been no war; states do not secede and people do not go to war over things like tariffs. Thus, this is not the volume to look to for lengthy discussion. Its purpose is to help one get an informative overview of the war as it unfolded, and to help one do so quickly. It succeeds admirably.

1 out of 5 stars Needs More Research.......2005-01-28

Although the maps and troops movements are adequate, unfortunately the author falls into the trap of putting out a sanitized (and grossly inaccurate) account of the War Between the States. His "Origins of the War" dealt more with propaganda than with any factual information. The book would have been far more interesting had he actually researched the events taking place prior to the war (ie: the tariff battles and sectional conflicts relating to how the federal budget money was being spent disproportionately), this book would have been a much better work. As it stands, he should have either not delved into the causes (and got it wrong, as he did), or he should have done more research in that area prior to actually writing the book. Disappointing.

1 out of 5 stars No REAL history here.......2005-01-27

Mark Swanson states that he is a historian, which is an insult to all the individuals that actually delve into history in its entirety without slanting facts to their prejudices. Swanson's "Introduction - Origins of the Civil War" is an account of slavery in the United States and not one iota more! An uninformed person would believe that slavery was the only cause of the WBTS. Save your money and buy one of the many other books that will provide this information without a Marxist point of view.

1 out of 5 stars Good maps, bad research.......2005-01-25

This book has a good collection of maps and does a fair job of tracking troop movements but has a definite biased slant and innaccurately stresses slavery as the major cause of the war, even though this didn't become a real issue until 1862, when Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation (which is a masterpiece of doublespeak that actually freed NO ONE AT ALL, since Lincoln had no authority over the Confederacy, and specifically excluded northern states). There is an emphasis on negative Southern acts, such as Longstreet's foraging mission in North Carolina, while northern atrocities are glossed over. An impressive piece of historical bias and revisionist history, and only the maps are of interest. Most of those are available for free from the National Archives, just to name one source, or other better-written works, so don't waste your money.

        Book Description

In mid-December 1780, General Nathanael Greene made a military decision that led to a decisive baffle in our nation's struggle for independence. This bloody conflict would hearten the Patriots and cast a pall of gloom over the British army and their Tory sympa-thizers. Facing a superior British force under General Cornwallis, Greene divided his army, sending Brigadier General Daniel Morgan west of the Catawba River. Cornwallis' favorite cavalry officer, Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton, followed Mor-gan. Bearss recounts the complex strategies that led to one of the great baffles of the American Revolu-tion. When the opposing forces clashed on a lightly wooded field on a bitter Wednesday morning, Janu-ary 17, 1781, Morgan carried the day with his astute military tactics and bold leadership. The victory tar-nished Tarleton's command and weakened the British presence in the South. This book details the troop movements and strategies of a baffle that would fore-shadow the Patriot victory at Yorktown.

3 out of 5 stars A good little overview of an obscure battle.......2001-12-02

While it doesn't have the name recognition of Bunker Hill or Lexington the battle of Cowpens is one of the important battles of the American Revolution. This slim volume gives a fair amount of detail on the situation leading up to the battle and the personalities involved. The description of the battle itself is given in detail and the B&W maps make it easy to follow along with the action.
It's difficult to give a fair review to this book, since it is problematic to determine its niche. It is a very quick read (maybe an hour) and the level of detail is not overwhelming. As a brief overview of an obscure battle it hits the mark dead on...the question then becomes, do you need an overview of an obscure battle?
For wargamers or miniature players the book might be a good investment for working out troop movements and TO&E's.
I would not recommend it for the casual history buff, you'd be better off picking up something more general that covers more of the war or at least the campaigns in the south.

5 out of 5 stars Use while reading The Killer Angels.......2003-12-16

The American Civil War has a very steep learning curve. There are so many names and so many details. When I read the Killer Angels, I found I had a little bit of trouble following who was who. Afterwards, when I visited the battlefield I realized I had imagined the battlefield a bit incorrectly.

That was a little more than ten years ago. Now I read about the Civil War like some follow soap operas. I'm no longer overwhelmed with detail and I enjoy rereading familiar events from slightly different points of view. The Killer Angels had helped me along quite a bit. After all, half the war was before Gettysburg and half was afterwards, giving me a nice way to organize.

But this book was also very helpful. While the National Park Service map provides an excellent tour, so does this book. It also breaks down the action into appropriate time intervals.

I particularly recommend this book to those who've read Killer Angels and want to read it again or read more on Gettysburg. Lots of details will fit into place.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent source for the interested visitor.......1999-08-21

The copy outlines the significant areas of the battle very well. Regardless of your level of expertise, it is easy to follow the progress of the battle. Although the maps are clear and show topographical features, they do not include the roads added since the battle. However, there is a segment on the Battlefield Today that brings the past and present into focus. Overall, this is an excellent source. Buy it if you can find it.

These are certainly excellent and useful maps, but this CD is [not worth the $$$] This is a CDR, not a commercial-type CD ROM. It looks like someone recorded it at home. Further, all of these maps are public domain and available for no charge at the US Military Academy's website...Don't make the mistake of paying [$$$] like I did.
