Book Description
Geometry is one of the oldest mathematical subjects in history. Unfortunately, few geometry study guides offer clear explanations, causing many people to get tripped up or lost when trying to solve a proof—even when they know the terms and concepts like the back of their hand. However, this problem can be fixed with practice and some strategies for slicing through all the mumbo-jumbo and getting right to the heart of the proof.
Geometry Workbook For Dummies ensures that practice makes perfect, especially when problems are presented without the stiff, formal style that you’d find in your math textbook. Written with a commonsense, street-smart approach, this guide gives you the step-by-step process to solve each proof, along with tips, shortcuts, and mnemonic devices to make sure the solutions stick. It also gives you plenty of room to work out your solutions, providing you with space to breathe and a clear head. This book provides you with the tools you need to solve all types of geometry problems, including:
- Congruent triangles
- Finding the area, angle, and size of quadrilaterals
- Angle-arc theorems and formulas
- Touching radii and tangents

World War II for Dummies.......2007-07-27
I am reading the book now. So far, it is very interesting; I have learned many things, of which I not aware prior to beginning to read the book.
The shinny on WWII.......2007-05-23
"World War II for Dummies" is a wonderful reference for a thorough once over concerning the Second World War. In clear language it explains the causes for WWII, from the Allies humiliating punishment of Germany after World War I, the formation of the Nazi part, Japan's rising prominence in the Pacific, and some of the warning signs that some Allies missed or ignored concerning the dangers boiling in Europe in the 1920s and '30s (with the United States being especially guilty). It chronicles the rise of Adolf Hitler, Winston Churchill, Benito Mussolini, Franklin Roosevelt, and Joseph Stalin. Then it goes into detail of Germany's invasion of Poland, Britain's entry in the war, and Nazi conquering of France, a ages old enemy. It discusses the early battles, how the Allies were beat back, and how America slowly became involved in supporting the war. It then goes into the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, America's declaration of war and it's gearing up for battle. The early North African and Italian campaign, the Pacific Island Hopping campaign, the D-Day invasion from Normandy, and the war for Europe. The book briefly details the major military figures, like George Patton, Chester Nimitz, Bernard Montgomery, and the Nazi's only real war hero, Erwin Rommell. There is a fascinating look at the civilian contribution to the war effort from Britain, America, Japan and Germany. I know a lot of people know much about WWII from TV, movies, History Channel's endless supply of documentaries, and of course our grandparents, the 'greatest generation'. The only small complaint I have is that sometimes, it just too dry, and now and then it's a bit of a chore to get through. That aside "World War II for Dummies" is a great resource for understanding the event that changes our world for better and worse.
no longer a dummy.......2007-03-09
I felt I didn't know enough about WWII and decided to get this book and read it. Now after having read the book, I feel that I have a good concept of the war as well as a general understanding of foriegn affairs and the part Americans have played in the world. If a mother of 4 like me can enjoy this book so can you. Very interesting, informative and will make any American proud.
World War II Condensed.......2006-03-24
Dr. Dickson covers a tremendous amount of ground in this excellent history. Many Americans have a casual knowledge of World War II, mostly centered around Pearl Harbor and D-Day. This books crams an incredible amount of detail about the war into a few short pages and covers many of the overlooked theaters of the war: North Africa, Italy, southwest Pacific and Burma. I highly recommend this book for high school and college students.
things i forgot.......2004-07-23
this book was so good because we did not go into depth in my history class so we did not learn of much of the pacific theatre of operations.we only learnt about island hopping and the atomic bomb.i really enjoyed the side pannels that explained stuff about certain people. this book was awesome

Book Description
In this dazzling new series, philosopher and cultural critic Slavoj Zizek interrogates key writings on revolution.
Robespierre's defense of the French Revolution remains one of the most powerful and unnerving justifications for political violence ever written, and has extraordinary resonance in a world obsessed with terrorism and appalled by the language of its proponents. Yet today, the French Revolution is celebrated as the event which gave birth to a nation built on the principles of enlightenment
So how should a contemporary audience approach Robespierre's vindication of revolutionary terror? Zizek takes a helter-skelter route through these contradictions, marshalling all the breadth of analogy for which he is famous.
"If the spring of popular government in time of peace is virtue, the springs of popular government in revolution are at once virtue and terror: virtue, without which terror is fatal; terror, without which virtue is powerless."Robespierre
Book Description
Since his execution by guillotine in July 1794, Maximilien Robespierre has been contested terrain for historians, at once the most notorious leader of the French Revolution and the least comprehensible. Was he a bloodthirsty charlatan or the only true defender of revolutionary ideals? Was his extreme moralismhe was known as The Incorruptiblea heroic virtue or a ruinous flaw? Was he the first modern dictator or the earliest democrat? Against the dramatic backdrop of the French Revolution, historian Ruth Scurr follows the trajectory of Robespierres paradoxical life, from his unprepossessing beginnings as a provincial lawyer opposed to repressive authority and the death penalty, to his meteoric rise in Paris politics as a devastatingly efficient revolutionary leader, righteous and paranoid in equal measure. She explores his reformist zeal, his role in the trial of the king and the fall of the monarchy, his passionate attempt to design a modern republic, even his extraordinary effort to found a perfect religion. And she follows him into the depths of the Terror, as he makes summary execution the order of the day, himself falling victim to the violence at the age of thirty-six. Written with epic sweep, full of nuance and insight, Fatal Purity is a fascinating portrait of a man who identified with the Revolution to the point of madness, and in so doing changed the course of history.

Excellent biography.......2007-08-28
I was not going to write about this book, but have decided to do so after reading some of the other reviews. This book is a biography, and tells of Robespierre from the beginning of his life to its end. It does not begin with the King's flight to Varennes, as implied by one reviewer. I found the writing clear and easy to read, not boring. I have never admired Robespierre and this book did not change my opinion of him, even though it is even-handed and tells what good things can be said of him. I don't know of a better modern biography of him and I have no hesitancy in giving this book five stars.
Solid Biography but could use a little balance.......2007-08-27
This is an excellent biography of Robespierre that really gives the reader an inside look at the French Revolution. The style of writing is very easy to read and personal so the reader feels like they are present at the events. I would recommend having at least a cursory knowledge for the revolution before reading this as she does assume some knowledge for events that Robespierre is not directly involved with. The biggest drawback to the book and the main reason for the four stars is that it is very pro-Robespierre and this comes from a reliance on his sisters journal (Catharine) as a primary source. Some further work which would have been done had this been an academic book would have been better. Nonetheless it is comprehensive and well done. The analysis of the terror is very unique and the bloodletting that so many focus on is explained very well here. This is a great start to understanding Robespierre and despite the fawning praise it is well worth the read.
Instructive, Insightful, and Interesting.......2007-07-08
A fine study of personality...with considerable attention to accuracy. Literary quality is very good.
Sometimes, history outshines any novel, in intrigue and tragedy; such is the case, here.
There is little opinion in this book, thankfully. Furthermore, the author respects Robespierre as a creature of not only his inner mannerisms, but especially of his times.
In my education, I missed the French Revolution. It was my great pleasure to happen upon this book, as excellent as it is. Thanks to PBS, too, for stimulating my interest, quite accidentally, in this man and his mission. The creations of the Revolutionaries, such as revamped calendar and religion, are discussed pointedly. No mention of metric system, but perhaps none is needed!
My greatest regret, from this book, was that the story ended with the death of Robespierre. I will look with interest elsewhere, to see how the fledgling republic, so fraught with discord, shortly afterward degenerated into the Napoleonic monarchy.
Some societies just are not mature enough for democracy, perhaps.
Robespierrism: Hell Paved with Good Intentions .......2007-04-11
Ruth Scurr successfully manages to be neither overly critical nor too flattering in explaining Maximilien Robespierre to her readers. Scurr highlights the significant influence of the classical Greek and Roman tradition and the 18th century Enlightenment on Robespierre's intellect. Scurr also quotes Robespierre and his contemporaries to give her audience further insights into the complex, contradictory personality of the Incorruptible.
To his detractors, present and past, Robespierre was the first of a long list of modern dictators. Think for instance about the multiple purges over which dictators such as Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, and Saddam Hussein presided during their respective reigns of terror. Terror increasingly became self-perpetuating and indiscriminate when Robespierre was at the apex of his power in 1793 - 1794. Robespierre, unable to compromise, convinced himself that he embodied France and the Revolution. Unsurprisingly, anyone who did not share his views was a traitor to France and therefore a counterrevolutionary who deserved death. Terror could only be stopped by Robespierre's own elimination.
To his supporters, present and past, Robespierre was the first modern democrat. Robespierre embraced the social contract theory of government that Jean-Jacques Rousseau propagated and the concept of republican virtue that Charles-Louis de Secondat (Montesquieu) advocated. Robespierre built a genuine reputation as the defender of the poor and weak in the different positions that he assumed, especially after the Revolution. Robespierre went far in his quest for power because he sincerely believed everything he was saying and convinced many people around him of his sincerity in working for the well-being of the Revolution.
Perhaps, more importantly, the fate of Robespierre is a stern warning to the revolutionaries of all stripes, present and future. Revolutions often devour their own children.
From Artois to the Guillitone.......2007-04-05
Most biographers either fall in love with their subject or villify them to the extreme. Ruth Schurr in this wonderfully crafted biography falls into neither trap. She lays out the history of this remarkable man and his role in the French revolution and lets the reader decide whether he was truly "incorruptible" or simply a bloodthirsty opportunist. In doing so, she presents a fascinating portrait of a man who changed the history of France and, in many ways, the world.
This is not an overly erudite or scholarly study of the man. Much in this book contains educated speculation, but the author doesn't feign to present it as anything more. It is an eminently readable account of the history of this period from the Revolutionary perspective. The writing style is engrossing and reads like a suspense novel with twist and turns as Maximillian one-by-one turns on his friends and enemies alike. I can't recommend this more highly and it is a good counterpoise to a book like "Road to Versailles" by Munro Price, which presents the royalist perspective.
A great initial offering from Ruth Scurr. I can't wait to get her next book.

Fantastic Buying Guide to Eating Healthy!.......2005-09-27
As a big fan of the 1st edition of this guide, I'm just so pleasantly surprised that the new edition has lots more really great foods that I can now eat and know I'm on the path of a healthy lifestyle. I'm nowhere near a strict vegetarian so the Yummy Hunter's Guide has lots of choices that fit my mood. All cuisines are represented and I see some of these choices at my neighborhood Safeway so I don't have to haunt any of the specialty health food stores just to eat right. Very easy to use this guide and with it's cool size it fits right in your purse when you feel like shopping with an eye for delicious but low-calorie gourmet foods.

Fantastic Book to Help You Eat Healthy.......2004-12-03
I just have to give kudos to the authors for doing the seemingly impossible... a guidebook to healthy foods that taste great and can be found in most supermarkets. I'm usually overwhelmed with the task of trying to eat right since I love my comfort foods, but THE YUMMY HUNTER'S GUIDE got me out of my rut and now I'm actually excited about trying out new foods. Organized almost like a Zagat's travel guide this very fun to read but still practical guide is a bargain for all of those out there trying to eat fairly healthy without resorting to a Draconian wheat grass diet.
Yummy Hunters is a Yummy find.......2004-11-18
This is a great book. I don't know how many times I saw something new in the supermarket and I decided to try it and it was awful. I ended up throwing it all out. This book had great foods which was already tasted for me. It was a no brainer. Everything I tried from the book was great. No more wasting food. I just take along my guide with me and I have fun shopping. It has saved me a fortune and it also gave me great ideas of new foods to buy. The book is divided into food categories, so when I need something , I know exactly where to find it. I would highly recommend this book for anyone either on a diet or just trying to eat the right, healthy foods.
Customer Reviews:
Impartiality.......2005-08-05
This book is one of the most impartial and un-biased accounts of Robespierre that I have read to date. Hampson takes the thoughts and doubts that any good historian has and turns them into a mode of imparting history itself. I do think that one should have at least a small basis in French Revolutionary history to fully appreciate this work; however I also think this should be an essential for any Revolutionary historian.
Scholarly, and not for the faint-hearted.......2004-09-04
This is a balanced and scholarly review of Robespierre, mindful of the limitations we have in access to sources on "the man" as opposed to the politician. The account takes an intriguing approach by using three questioners as an interactive audience, arguing with the historian Hampson right on the pages of the book. This avoids the judgmental one-sidedness that could be a risk of a one-person account of Robespierre. The one problem with the book is its presumption that the reader is thoroughly familiar with the chronology and context of the French Revolution. A non-historian -- like this reviewer -- can get lost in an avalanche of names: These refer to people who had a role somewhere in the revolutionary government, but remain without background and personality. On the other hand, monumental events such as the execution of King Louis XVI somehow glide by with nary a mention. It can be hard even to track what year we're in at a given episode in the book, not to mention the confusion of having revolutionary months such as Thermidor alternate with traditional calender denominations. Still, I felt educated and smarter after reading the book, thanks in part to the extensive references provided.
Innovative format.......2000-02-06
This book employs an innovative format to allow the reader to form his own opinion about Robspierre based on three different viewpoints without distorting the historical facts. Challenging and highly recommended
