    Book Description

Daniel M. Gurtner examines the meaning of the rending of the veil at the death of Jesus in Matthew 27:51a by considering the functions of the veil in the Old Testament and its symbolism in Second Temple and Rabbinic Judaism. Gurtner incorporates these elements into a compositional exegesis of the rending text in Matthew. He concludes that the rending of the veil is an apocalyptic assertion like the opening of heaven revealing, in part, end-time images drawn from Ezekiel 37. Moreover, when the veil is torn Matthew depicts the cessation of its function, articulating the atoning role of Christ's death which gives access to God not simply in the sense of entering the Holy of Holies (as in Hebrews), but in trademark Matthean Emmanuel Christology: â€~God with us’. This underscores the significance of Jesus' atoning death in the first gospel.

      Book Description

A true story of freedom and miraculous healing as a Muslim girl finds faith in Christ

When Gulshan Esther, a devout Muslim girl, was six months old, typhoid left her a cripple. Her loving father took her from Pakistan to England to find a cure, but the only hope the British specialist could offer was prayer. Gulshan and her father made pilgrimage to Mecca and begged Allah for healing, but it was not until her father’s untimely death that Gulshan began to receive an answer. In her grief she wanted to die, but as she called out to God, for the first time in her life she sensed she was being heard. She heard a low, gentle voice say, “I won’t let you die. I will keep you aliveÃ-I am Jesus, son of Mary.”

As Gulshan began reading the Quran, her interest in Jesus grew, until one amazing night he appeared to her in her bedroom in a blaze of light. He restored her crippled arm and leg and taught her The Lord’s Prayer. He told her to go to his people—now her people—and tell them what he had done. Since that time, and to this day, she has been a joyous, obedient disciple of Christ. The Torn Veil is an amazing story of faith and determination.

This moving autobiography was first published in 1984 and has sold over 200,000 copies worldwide.

I was swept away of the Gulshan Esther's courage. A wonderful person recommended this book - I'm so glad he did because it was hard to put down. I was in awe of Jesus' faithfulness and promise to heal those who call on Him and believe in His name. Truly a powerful story which God desired for His people to read. Gulshan answered that call, not backing down for a moment; she's a beautifully healed soldier.

A very interesting biography of a Muslim girl's conversion to Christianity. Very inspiring and humbling story. Recommended for Christian people, those week in faith will not believe this truly remarkable story.

      5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2001-10-29

This is an amazing book and I would recommend it to all Christians, and perhaps more importantly, to anyone else who is open-minded about the claims of the Christian faith. The book describes how a Muslim girl, Gulshan Esther, is miraculously healed of a severe physical disability by Jesus when He appears before her. The book also details Gulshan's rejection by her own family when she becomes a Christian, and her great courage and determination to serve Jesus and tell His people what He did for her. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

For the reviewer below, Susan Mathew, who wanted to know Gulshan Esther's contact details, here is her address and telephone number:

This is a wonderful story of a muslim girl who is miraculously healed from her life long sickness by the special touch of jesus.Rather than rejoicing with her, she was forsaken by all at home. But God through his wonderful ways is using her as a powerful testimony around the world. This is the best gift for a muslim friend of yours.

5 out of 5 stars Torn Veil, Closed Eyes.......2001-02-03

Torn Veil is a personal story of a daring woman. She has got guts, having the courage to go against an oppressive society to follow what she knows to be true. But I guess it helps a lot when you are healed by Jesus of a lifetime of paralysis. It is a recurring theme that though people, her own family, saw the great miracle happen, they still reject the Healer: closed eyes for fear of what people will think.

            Book Description

The Old Covenant that God established required a priest to mediate forgiveness, offer sacrifices for sins, and navigate the spiritual growth and edification of the people. This was accomplished primarily in the sanctuary of the tabernacle behind a veil which separated God from the people; both literally and spiritually. The priest interpreted mysteries, translated needs, and represented those who were confined by this veil, a veil which prevented them from independently understanding spiritual truths; truths which, ironically, were part of God¿s eventual perfect will for them to know. Today, we have a special opportunity to participate in a dynamic relationship with God through Christ Jesus, without any other mediator, outside intervention or system of religion. The culmination of God¿s history with mankind is in Christ¿s sacrifice, and life, which establish both a New Covenant and the freedom for us to confidently go into His presence, and to remain there forever. The veil of the Old Covenant is therefore torn and done away with through the provisions of this New Covenant which call for each of us to rest from our inadequate efforts in coming to God through ceremonial observances, adherence to the Ten Commandments, or other methods that seem intuitively appealing to us. Through this new relationship, we are invited, and challenged, to experience the greatest spiritual joy and happiness that is within our capacity to realize, without limitation; other than that which we construct and impose upon ourselves.

                Book Description

In this remarkable book, Barbara Freese takes us on a rich historical journey that begins hundreds of millions of years ago and spans the globe. Prized as “the best stone in Britain” by Roman invaders who carved jewelry out of it, coal has transformed societies, expanded frontiers, and sparked social movements, and still powers our electric grid. Yet coalÂ's world-changing power has come at a tremendous price, including centuries of blackening our skies and lungs—and now the dangerous warming of our global climate. Ranging from the “great stinking fogs” of London to the rat-infested coal mines of Pennsylvania, from the impoverished slums of Manchester to the toxic streets of Beijing, Coal is a captivating narrative about an ordinary substance with an extraordinary impact on human civilization.

5 out of 5 stars The original fossil fuel.......2007-01-15

The story of a fossil fuel that still generates most of the world's (and the United States') electricity. It is much less flexible than oil, and much less (retro-)futuristic than uranium, produces a lot of air pollution (she has an early-20th-century photograph of a child afflicted with rickets, due to lack of sunlight exposure because of air pollution), yet unlike with oil and uranium, we aren't about to run out of it any time soon. Everybody wishes we could replace coal with renewable energy, but we just cannot generate as much electricity with renewables, however earnestly we might wish it. Read Energy at the Crossroads by Vaclav Smil for a far more serious treatment of the future of fossil and nonfossil fuels.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read!.......2006-08-02

With todays concerns regarding energy, and the switch from oil to alternative fuels, this book provides how it felt when the use coal had reached its peak in the 19th century and oil began to replace coal as a cleaner, more efficient alternative fuel source.

The book was well written, and gave a timeline of coals inception as an energy source, and the ill-effects experienced by society as a result of its use. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in non-fiction.

4 out of 5 stars Very informative, easy read but..........2006-01-15

she did neglect (or didn't realize) to mention that the bloody Nazi bums under Hitler used coal to fly their airplanes in WW2! I hate coal because those Nazi swine used it in lieu of oil for plane fuel.

                4 out of 5 stars Center-left analysis of coal.......2005-10-27

This book is a good introduction to the history of coal and issues surrounding its use. It's not an extensive history of all of its uses as other reviewers have observed and the author's credentials as an enviromental lawyer let you know which side of the fence she stands on. However, she makes a good try at presenting a balanced viewpoint, and usually succeeds. The book is very readable, and for anyone with an interest in energy issues, it should be entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Coal's role in chemisty neglected.......2005-09-07

I found this book to be well-written in a literary sense. While correctly critical of coal where justified, Freese does not descend into partisan polemic and cliche when discussing difficult issues.

The book covers nearly all the major issues that coal has faced over the centuries - including the little-recognised fact that Europe went through an energy crisis as forests were depleted before coal came into widespread use hundreds of years ago.

However, I was surprised that Freese did not cover the major role that coal played in the development of organic chemical industries based on coal liquids in the 19th century.

We owe synthetic dyes and major advances in the understanding of organic chemistry to coal liquid by-products of coke and gas making in the 19th century.

Solvents such as benzene were also first made from coal tars.

The misuse of these chemicals also led to major advances in the understanding of occupational health and epidemiology - some of the most significant medical advances of the 20th century.

                  Book Description

he first intensive analysis of sense of place in American mining towns, Hard as the Rock Itself: Place and Identity in the American Mining Town provides rare insight into the struggles and rewards of life in these communities. David Robertson contends that these communities--often characterized in scholarly and literary works as derelict, as sources of debasing moral influence, and as scenes of environmental decay--have a strong and enduring sense of place and have even embraced some of the signs of so-called dereliction.

Robertson documents the history of Toluca, Illinois; Cokedale, Colorado; and Picher, Oklahoma, from the mineral discovery phase through mine closure, telling for the first time how these century-old mining towns have survived and how sense of place has played a vital role.

Acknowledging the hardships that mining's social, environmental, and economic legacies have created for current residents, Robertson argues that the industry's influences also have contributed to the creation of strong, cohesive communities in which residents have always identified with the severe landscape and challenging, but rewarding way of life.

Robertson contends that the tough, unpretentious appearance of mining landscapes mirrors qualities that residents value in themselves, confirming that a strong sense of place in mining regions, as elsewhere, is not necessarily wedded to an attractive aesthetic or even to a thriving economy.

Mining historians, geographers, and other students of place in the American landscape will find fascinating material in Hard As the Rock Itself.

From the supplier: The factors behind the implementation of adversarial labor management strategies by Clinton Corn Processing Company, US Steel Corp.'s Gary Works unit, International Paper Company and Pittston Coal Group are studied. It is shown that a combination of factors prompted the use of aggressive labor management strategies which include increased competition, labor surplus and the efforts of labor to protect its own interests.
