5 out of 5 stars Great quick historical overview.......2007-08-29

I've just begun a "Great Books" reading plan and am using this to refresh myself on different periods. Gives a good sense of what what was happening politically, culturally and other otherwise that the author or characters may be dealing with.

3 out of 5 stars Good summary of American History.......2007-06-28

I find this book very useful and, given the price, I would recomend it.
I must say however that I was very disapointed with the fact that this book is mainly focused in the US History, and less focused in Europe's (and the rest of the world) History . Centuries like XIV and XV seem to be lacking important facts.
Besides, if you want to find a date of a certain event it is not easy (there is a glossary at the end that can help you with this but it is incomplete).
Again, I do not regret buying this book but I think I was expecting something else.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Thorough!!!.......2007-02-22

As a University professor, I find this book invaluable. The chronology, breadth of information and layout design all combine to make it an extremely valuable tool. I would eagerly recommend it to anyone with interests or reseach requirements.

2 out of 5 stars Difficult to use.......2007-01-31

I found this timetable difficult to use. When the description called it encyclopedic they must have been talking about its size and weight. One might find it informative to just thumb thru and see what was happening in different areas of the world at different time. But to use the book to trace a particular development (like "movable type," or "domesticated dairy animals,") or to compare progressive periods of history between civilizations (like Central and South America, China, or Egypt) is awkward with lots of bookmarks and notes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2007-01-10

I am a writer and have found this book to be an excellent resource. I want to be sure that dates and events that I might mention in my writing are correct and this book is easy to use and insures that my work is correct. Great book.

Book Description

This amazing visual overview walks readers through the history of medical discoveries year-by-year from crude early techniques to cutting-edge modern treatments. The illustrated timetable offers parallel chronologies of the developments in public health, disease, diagnosis, treatment, surgery, healers and teachers, medical science and inventions as they happened. Key concurrent world events are also noted for historical context. Each decade is indicated at the top of the full-color timetable. Underneath, pictures and short descriptions show the advances and breakthroughs that occurred all over the world at that time, allowing readers the unique opportunity to trace medical developments chronologically. For example, in the 1920s column, readers will see that in the U.S. scientists developed a vaccine against TB, in France the iron lung was invented and in Germany the first successful pregnancy test was administered. The wealth of engaging information is broken-up into small vignettes providing an overview of the advances of medical science and relating specific stories about discoveries and personalities of particular interest.

4 out of 5 stars Fun book to look at...great for my classes........2005-04-05

I enjoyed getting this book for my classes. It's a visual map of medicine from the beginning of time (homo sapien's time). There was some information in there that was new to me, but most of it is stuff I already knew. It's the presentation that is great to show students when things occurred and why, especially in terms of changes in society. This book makes it clear that medical changes in preserving life and actually curing disease, was dependent upon the different sciences making progress in each individual field. Then those changes could be incorporated into medicine.

An example of this, is the development of microscopes during the Enlightenment Era, and increasing better optics made it possible for Pasteur to come up with germ theory. It wasn't until this area in physics was conquered for it to be possible for researchers to see bacteria. This is well-illustrated in this book.

I was hoping for a better bibliography. Most of the books are pretty general, and I was hoping for more specifics to follow up the information given in the timeline with books for students to read in the areas they are interested in, rather than just medical history.

Only other complaint is the typeface on the timelines is so small you practically need a magnifying glass to look at this book with. A little bit large typeface, and more pages would have been fine.

Well, off to look up some of the new stuff I found in the timetable...

Karen Sadler,
Science Education

4 out of 5 stars Nice book to have around.......2001-08-07

A visually attractive book that will provide quick information on medical developments through history, helpful in relating what happened in the medical world at similar times but in different settings or places. Brief time-relationship is also given to non-medical events. Bibliography is extense, Internet and museum references are welcome for their usefulness to those interested in expanding their information. Latinamerican contributions to Medicine is greatly ignored by the authors.

3 out of 5 stars Loaded with Interesting Facts but a bit of a Lightweight.......2007-06-12

For a light read this book is ok, and one can get lost reading it to pass the time. Those looking for a bit more will be disappointed. The facts are listed by year, but the actual date of the event is not given. A big draw back to me. The facts they picked were interresting, but I thought they would have included other events, but one can find this in any book on history. For a general read, this book is fine. For a history reference book, you'll need to look else where.

Book Description

Have you ever wondered how we really know what year it is? Part detective story, part conspiracy theory, part scientific history, The Lost Millennium explores the astonishing possibility that our calendar is out by a thousand years.

A chance conversation at a conference in Mexico started mathematician Florin Diacu on an amazing journey to make sense of one of the strangest — and if true, most revolutionary — theories you’ll ever encounter. To understand how scientists could be sceptical about what year it is, Florin Diacu explores the fascinating history of chronology — from Egyptian horoscopes to the work of Isaac Newton, with cameos by Voltaire and Edmund Halley — making the startling discovery that our calendar is far from ironclad. It all depends, rather, on the dating of ancient events — about which there is real controversy.

At once accessible and profound, The Lost Millennium examines the arguments of present-day chronological revisionists such as the Russian scholar Anatoli Fomenko, who claims that our system of dating is horribly askew. Fomenko cites evidence from ancient astronomy, linguistics and cartography, and a crucial manuscript by Ptolemy, staking his scientific prestige on a theory so controversial that it will change the way you think about time, history and the calendar on your wall. The field has also inspired its share of now-discredited cranks, such as Immanuel Velikovsky, a media celebrity of the 1950s. His notorious book Worlds in Collision argued that biblical events are incorrectly dated.

Beautifully written and peopled with fascinating characters from past and present, The Lost Millennium is essential reading for anyone who believes they’re living in the year 2005.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars objective account and fun to read .......2007-08-01

A must read for anyone who wants an objective account on Fomenko's views. there are also brief accounts on Peter James and David Rohl. maybe in a second edition professor Diacu will venture into the minds of the German revisionists Uwe Topper, and Herbert Illig. so far they sound more convincing to me than Fomenko, although Fomenko's results for the almagest do destroy the main pillar of traditional chronology. Diacu speaks of the dark ages in the middle ages but never really gets into it. Herbert Illig for example proposed that 300 years should be taken out of the chronology, according to him the years between 600 AD and 900 AD. if anyone was convinces by Peter James Centuries of Darkness, he should be convinced by Illig. the proofs are very similar, and they were very convincing to me. in conclusion, Diacu has managed to summarize Fomenko in mere 200 pages and he did it in a fun way. there is still space for lets say 100 pages exploring the views of the German revisionists, this would give the reader more places were to choose from.

5 out of 5 stars A great read.......2006-01-04

This book filled my winter holidays with joy! I always thought mathematicians cannot write, but Diacu proved me wrong. He succeeded to grip my attention from the beginning and kept me focused until I read the very last line. Now I am reading this book for the second time because I want to fix the ideas, and I find it as fresh and engaging as the first time. Diacu's quest to learn the truth, his enthusiasm and care for detail are worth noting. A read that made me think more intensly than I did in years.

5 out of 5 stars Challenging Historical Chronology.......2005-12-15

Being an avid reader of history books, especially ancient history, I have always taken for granted that when a historian stated that an event occurred in a certain year in the distant past, that that year was correct - especially if conventionally accepted among historians - within, perhaps, a small margin of error. Before reading this book, I was not aware of the challenges that have been made in the past, and that are still being made today, to conventional historical chronology - challenges that propose to shorten recorded history by as much as one thousand years! The main reformist in this field these days is Anatoli Fomenko, a well-respected Russian mathematician on whose work most of this book is based. The author, also a mathematician, uses an unbiased and objective approach in analyzing Fomenko's theories and methods. He also discusses the traditionalists' reactions to Fomenko's results. Although it is easy to sense that history's timetables are not about to be overturned any time soon based solely on Fomenko's work, the author does suggest ways in which some traditional dates can be confirmed. Observing the scientific method at work is always interesting for me. This is a fascinating book. It is very well written in a clear and engaging style; and, for me, it was quite a page-turner.

4 out of 5 stars LET'S HEAR IT FOR WOMEN.......2004-04-30

Taking the position that women were relegated to secondary status as history was written, the author, who has penned several studies on women in the Middle Ages, seeks to rectify that oversight.

Archeological evidence, qualified as somewhat ambiguous, sheds some light on the lives of women in prehistoric times. For instance, 26,000 years ago the portrait of a woman was crafted in ivory. Nearby that discovery was found what might be her grave, apparently the burial was an honored one.

The Middle Ages produced some talented artists, often nuns who copied texts and colored the illustrations; 23 female painters lived in Bologna in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Prodigious research makes this text both fact-filled and fascinating. Women's history from the dawn of civilization to a mass march on Washington, D.C. is carefuly documented.

5 out of 5 stars a tremendus collection..........2000-04-17

The book is extremely interesting covering major events in Jewish history as early as circa 9000 BC (!) up through 1991. Of course most of it deals with the last 2000 years. What is most shocking is the documentation of antisemitism that is so widespread in just about every location on the globe and in every age.

The history spanning the last 100 years was most revealing, showing us bit by bit how the nation of Israel was re-formed, and how the current conflicts that we still see in the news today have progressed from their inception. My understanding of modern Jewish history increased dramatically by reading through what was going on in Israel and other parts of the world during the same time frames. The numerous accounts of events occurring before, during, and after WWII gave me a new-found perspective on the Jewish plight. It was quite eye-opening to find out just who, in the United States and abroad were supporters or enemies of the Jewish nation.

This is a tremendous collection of newsworthy events important to the Jewish culture arranged so that you can easily compare history in other parts of the world at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars Best Jewish History Reference Book.......1998-03-11

This book gives a step-by-step history of the Jewish people and their religion. I would recommend this book for anyone looking for a book that contains just about everything there is to know about Judaism and it's followers.

5 out of 5 stars The Timetables of History.......2001-12-30

As a writer and teacher, this book has been very helpful. It helps make connections between different events in different parts of the world. This has been especially helpful for me when planning units of study for children of all ages. It helps expand the study to a variety of interest areas.
The book is also helpful when reading as I often look up the particular time span and find out what else was going on at that time. For example, the year I was born, 1945 was the year that Vitamin A was synthesized, that Carousel played in New York, that Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Guggenheim Museum and that George Orwell wrote the Animal Farm. These connections make the reading so much more interesting and expansive. These connections have been especially helpful for the children. A really handy reference book. I have another copy.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, and helpful for any research........1999-03-26

This book illustrates very clearly how different events affected or started parts of history. It divides it up into sections such as political, religion, music, arts, and daily life. It proceeds to list all of the events that occured at that time period, or as mostly used per year. This book is a very helpful tool for a research project, or if you just want to brush up on your history.

Book Description

Originally published by UNC Press in 1952, The Railroads of the Confederacy tells the story of the first use of railroads on a major scale in a major war. Robert Black presents a complex and fascinating tale, with the railroads of the American South playing the part of tragic hero in the Civil War: at first vigorous though immature; then overloaded, driven unmercifully, starved for iron; and eventually worn out—struggling on to inevitable destruction in the wake of Sherman's army, carrying the Confederacy down with them.

With maps of all the Confederate railroads and contemporary photographs and facsimiles of such documents as railroad tickets, timetables, and soldiers' passes, the book will captivate railroad enthusiasts as well as readers interested in the Civil War.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars CONFEDERACY'S WEAKEST ASSET.......2007-10-12

A MAJOR INOVATION IN THE CIVIL WAR WAS THE STRATEGIC USE OF RAILROADS ON BOTH SIDES. THE CONDITION OF THE SOUTHERN RAILROADS AFFECTED BOTH THE CONFEDERACY AND THE UNION IN THIS WAR. DIFFERENT GUAGES OF TRACKS, WHETHER THE TRACKS RAN NORTH AND SOUTH OR EAST AND WEST WAS OF GREAT IMPORTANCE. THE ABILITY TO REPRODUCE CAPTURES OR DESTROYED ROLLING STOCK AND RAILS WAS A MAJOR FACTOR. IN THIS WORK BLACK ENLIGHTENS US TO THE PROBLEMS AND PROGRESS OF THE CONDEDERACY'S RAILROADS AND GIVES US A CLEAR PICTURE OF THEIR OPERATION AND MILITARY VALUE. A BOOK WELL WORTH READING.

4 out of 5 stars A very useful and fascinating book.......2000-01-20

After reading dozens of scholarly books, and writing published articles related to the Civil War myself, this book was a refreshing read. It is a reminder of the enormity of the task faced by the bureaucrats and businessmen behind the Confederate armies. Yes, the tide did turn at Gettysburg.

But for those who like to play "What if?" and speculate on the fortunes of war, this book is a bleak testimony to the long odds the south confronted. The Confederate States were almost completely unequipped to fight a modern, industrial war.

One shortcoming of this book, and it is a minor one, is that the story is told primarily through the eyes of railroad tycoons, and ignores to a great extent the perspective of well-known military personalities. This stems in part from the fact that Black relies heavily on the railroads themselves (their annual reports) for his source material. More research from military source material would round the picture out.

On the whole, however, Mr. Black must be commended. As I said, "fascinating."

5 out of 5 stars IMPORTANCE OF RAIL TRANSPORTATION DURING THE CIVIL WAR.......1998-06-27

This was a fascinating book as it put the Civil War into a slightly different context. It spotlighted the fact that many of the the major battles were fought over areas which were strategic rail centers - the best example being Atlanta.

It also clearly pointed out that the South was severely hampered by three different track gauges limiting the ready ability to carry freight long distances. In addition, even though the track gauges of a connecting railroad might have been the same, many of them were state owned. And some states would not permit rolling stock to cross state lines. This meant offloading and reloading freight at the state border.

And the Southern railroads never came under a unified control until very late in the War - in contrast to the North. And the South only had about a third of the track miles that the North had.

I highly recommend this book to any serious student of Civil War history. You don't even have to be a rail fan to enjoy it.

"[Russell-Wood] enumerates Portuguese contributions to other peoples' pasts and presents, especially in the contexts of the 'ebb and flow of commodities,' the 'dissemination of flora and fauna' and the 'transmission of styles, theories and ideas.' The original feature is the author's concentration on people and transport as vectors of cultural exchange... He evokes a lively picture of the highly mobile merchants, missionaries and administrators who hurried back and forth across oceans and continents to keep the enterprise going."--Times Literary Supplement

Russell-Wood is able to pursue ideas and make connections that previously have been constrained by strict chronological approaches. Using the study of movement as a focus, Russell-Wood gains unique insight into the diversity, breadth, and balance between the competing interests and priorities that characterized the Portuguese culture and its expansion spanning four centuries' events on four different continents.

"A. J. R. Russell-Wood realized that human and geographical factors contributed much to Portuguese success. Some practices were responses to the colonial experience itself. He therefore culled this historical literature, largely modern works in English including his own, to explore a rich variety of aspects of the Portuguese colonial empire... If geography is defined as mankind's relationship with its planet, this book is the essence of historical geography. Informative and entertaining, it is important for its new approach and insights, and because it confirms the amazing global perspective of Portugal's colonial rulers."--Journal of Historical Geography

"This is a book where every page bears witness to the author's fascination with the Portuguese colonial world and his deep love of his subject. It is the kind of book which results from a scholar's decision to open to the world the files he has accumulated in a lifetime's reading. As a result it is a sort of encyclopaedia of strange and recondite information, colourful detail, anecdotes and quotations. It is certainly a book that any student of Portuguese colonial activity would want to read and, indeed, to own."--Mariner's Mirror

5 out of 5 stars Portuguese worldwide impact.......2007-06-27

What an empire, the first truly global empire! The Portuguese impact and acheivements in the world deserve greater recognition and this book will detail them. Before the British, the Dutch and the Spanish the Portuguese had achieved so much. Even today the past can be seen all over the world.

    5 out of 5 stars Fascinating!.......2004-03-22

This is a lively account of the Portuguese sea discoveries in the 15th and 16th century, arriving at new lands and meeting new people, the trade and other exchanges that followed, all presented in a most interesting manner. Movement, colour, adventure make this book engaging reading. I also have Hermano Saraiva' s "Portugal a Companion History", another excellent book. I think they go very well together, one for the overseas history the other for Portugal itself. These are two books that bring history to life.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and informative reading.......2004-02-12

This book on the Portuguese history overseas is not a boring record of past events but a lively account of the intense movement of the Portuguese in the so-called Age of Discoveries, from Madeira to Brazil, to Japan and to Korea. It is a fascinating and well-documented record of the constant flow of people and commodities between Portugal and Africa, Asia and America. The superb illustrations help bring to life this constant flux and reflux. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and am very happy to recommend it to anyone interested in Portugal and its people,of today and yesterday.

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Introduction.......2003-10-12

In terms of scope of work, Russell-Wood's Portuguese Empire -World on the Move is a welcome addition to the "holistic" study of Portuguese overseas enterprise. To be sure, Portuguese scholarship has "caught up" with developments in Western historiography in the last two decades or so; there is also no shortage of area studies. Yet coverage remains uneven and this is especially so where English works on the subject is concerned

In terms of Western historiography, global history remains a nascent field. The diversely and globally located formal and informal enclaves does not mean that the overseas experiences belong to the Portuguese people alone, they were not to be claimed exclusively by Asians, Africans or Brazilians either; but as one scholar remarked -it was a shared memory

Like its more "matured" British counterpart, Portuguese history is increasingly interacting with indigenous and primary sources. Russell-Wood's Portuguese Empire is built on largely secondary sources, as expected; including afew Portuguese primary materials. Mastering the languages and the necessary paleography remains a daunting task for any historian. Eventhough the perspective might be Portuguese, the issues dealt with are global in nature; qualifying it in the category of world history. Russell-Wood also clarified from the beginning that he will not be probing too much into the political-administrative-military aspect but with explore the technologies, geography, demography, economics, ideas and dynamics of ecology (ie flora, fauna and disease)

In terms of perspective, the Portuguese Empire does indeed take on a "new history" approach, looking not only at the business of "the high class" in society (ie administrators and clergy) but also at the individuals and the voiceless

Whether in terms of human experience or traffic of goods, Russell-Wood has woven the international nature of the Portuguese empire well into the book. In an illustration of the former, there was a father and son team who were given appointments from Brazil to Africa to Goa and Macao and even returning briefly to Portugal to participate in the War of Spanish Succession (p 70-1). In the terms of trade, cloves from Ternate were carried to Malacca, to Cochim, then to Lisbon, reloaded there for Morocco and exchanged for wheat which became a further part of the exchange system of the South Atlantic (p 134). Excellent maps and tables were also interspersed in the book to explain the flow and traffic of commodities exchanged between the Portuguese and their hosts or that of the complicated wind system of the Atlantic or Indian Ocean

In some ways, the largely non new primary resource based and reinterpretative nature of the book meant it will still resonates afew outdated ideas. For example, the book continues to portray a planned approach by which the Portuguese were undertaking their overseas enterprise (p 21). Even the historians of the more "successful" British are conceiting that the formation of its First Empire might be more haphazard that what have been previously believed. Granted, the Portuguese venture had seen more of the state/crown intervention in the beginning than the private enterprise approach of the British; logistical and technological challenges of the time forbid a more coordinated effort

The book professed to look at development of the "Portuguese Empire" to the eve of the Napoleonic Wars just on the onset of nineteenth century (beginning of modern era?). Space does not permit it to treat the entire period with justice even on the secondary sources available. On trying to tie the Portuguese world together, the book did a splendid job and certainly complement, as the author humbly acknowledged, Boxer CR's magnificently written Portuguese Seaborne Empire as well as many other research done to date on political and military aspect of this human experience
