The Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium (3-Volume Set)

ASIN: 0195046528 |
Book Description
The Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium is a three-volume, comprehensive dictionary of Byzantine civilization. The first resource of its kind in the field, it features over 5,000 entries written by an international group of eminent Byzantinists covering all aspects of life in the Byzantine world. According to Alexander Kazhdan, editor-in-chief of the Dictionary: "Entries on patriarchy and emperors will coexist with entries on surgery and musical instruments. An entry on the cultivation of grain will not only be connected to entries on agriculture and its economics but on diet, the baking of bread, and the role of bread in this changing society." Major entries treat such topics as agriculture, art, literature, and politics, while shorter entries examine topics that relate to Byzantium such as the history of Kiev and personalities of ancient and biblical history. Each article is followed by a bibliography, and numerous maps, tables, architectural designs, and genealogies reinforce and clarify the text. The new ODB will be the standard research tool and reference work for Byzantinists from graduate students to advanced scholars, and an essential resource for college and school libraries. It will also be an invaluable guide for classicists, Western medievalists, Islamicists, Slavicists, art historians, religious historians, and scholars of archaeology.Customer Reviews:

The Oxford History of Byzantium

Book Description
The Oxford History of Byzantium is the only history to provide in concise form detailed coverage of Byzantium from its Roman beginnings to the fall of Constantinople and assimilation into the Turkish Empire. Lively essays and beautiful illustrations portray the emergence and development of a distinctive civilization, covering the period from the fourth century to the mid-fifteenth century. The authors - all working at the cutting edge of their particular fields - outline the political history of the Byzantine state and bring to life the evolution of a colourful culture. In AD 324, the Emperor Constantine the Great chose Byzantion, an ancient Greek colony at the mouth of the Thracian Bosphorous, as his imperial residence. He renamed the place 'Constaninopolis nova Roma', 'Constantinople, the new Rome' and the city (modern Istanbul) became the Eastern capital of the later Roman empire. The new Rome outlived the old and Constantine's successors continued to regard themselves as the legitimate emperors of Rome, just as their subjects called themselves Romaioi, or Romans long after they had forgotten the Latin language. In the sixteenth century, Western humanists gave this eastern Roman empire ruled from Constantinople the epithet 'Byzantine'. Against a backdrop of stories of emperors, intrigues, battles, and bishops, this Oxford History uncovers the hidden mechanisms - economic, social, and demographic - that underlay the history of events. The authors explore everyday life in cities and villages, manufacture and trade, machinery of government, the church as an instrument of state, minorities, education, literary activity, beliefs and superstitions, monasticism, iconoclasm, the rise of Islam, and the fusion with Western, or Latin, culture. Byzantium linked the ancient and modern worlds, shaping traditions and handing down to both Eastern and Western civilization a vibrant legacy.Customer Reviews:

Anne McCabe Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0199277559 |
Book Description
How were Greek texts on the care and medical treatment of the horse transmitted from antiquity to the present day? Using the evidence of Byzantine manuscripts of the veterinary compilation known as the Hippiatrica, Anne McCabe traces the journey of the texts from the stables to the medieval scriptorium and ultimately to the printed edition. Surviving manuscripts include both magnificent presentation copies and plain ones intended for use in the field. The Hippiatrica is a rich and little-known source of information about horses, medicine, and magic. Basil II and the Governance of Empire (976-1025) (Oxford Studies in Byzantium)
Catherine Holmes Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0199279683 |
Book Description
This is the first book-length study in English of the Byzantine emperor Basil II. Basil II, later known as 'Bulgar-slayer', is famous for his military conquests and his brutal intimidation of domestic foes. Catherine Holmes considers the problems Basil faced in governing a large, multi-ethnic empire, which stretched from southern Italy to Mesopotamia. Her close focus on the surviving historical narratives, above all the Synopsis Historion of John Skylitzes, reveals a Byzantium governed as much by persuasion as coercion. This book will appeal to those interested in Byzantium before the Crusades, the governance of pre-modern empires, and the methodology of writing early medieval political history.

Woman of the Green Glade: The Story of an Ojibway Woman on the Great Lakes Frontier
Virginia Soetebier Manufacturer: McDonald and Woodward Publishing Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0939923777 |
Book Description
Woman of the Green Glade is the story of Ozhaguscodaywayquay, daughter of the Ojibway chief Waubojeeg. Ozhaguscodaywayquay -- the Woman of the Green Glade -- lived in northern Wisconsin until she married the fur trader John Johnston in 1792. After they married, the couple moved to Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, where they settled and raised a family while John operated a major trading post at what was perhaps the most important crossroads in the upper Great lakes region. The influence of the Johnston's and their children was felt throughout the upper Great Lakes, in both the United States and Canada, and the legacy of Ozhaguscodaywayquay is truly monumental. One of the Johnston's daughters married Henry Rowe Schoolcraft -- explorer, Indian agent, teacher, politician, and ehtnographer. Ozhaguscodaywayquay became one of Schoolcraft's major sources of information about Ojibway culture. In turn, it was Schoolcraft's ethnography that provided much information used by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in his epic poem The Song of Hiawatha.

Kitchi Gami: Life Among The Lake Superior Ojibway (Borealis Books)
Johann G. Kohl Manufacturer: Minnesota Historical Society Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0873511727 |
Book Description
Kitchi-Gami, Kohl's classic book on the Ojibway of Lake Superior, is a fascinating study in contrasts and similarities. Its author was an urbane, well-traveled European, a trained ethnologist, and an accomplished popular writer. Kohl turned his sensitive powers of observation on a nation of people he found not unlike his own. Perceptively and elegantly, he described daily life among the Ojibway, detailing religious practices, legends, foods, games, medicines, homes, clothing, and methods of travel, hunting, and fishing. Kohl's gentle humor and candor, and his respect for the Objiway people, anticipate later developments in American ethnology and make his writing especially appealing to the modern reader.Customer Reviews:
The way of the Ojibway.......2005-07-09
He explains how they make their canoes and wigwams. How they prepare their food. How and why they preform traditional fesitvals/initiations. He also gives a number of accounts on the stories of nanabojou, the main character in ojibway myth.
At the end of the book he remarks that the most interesting thing about these people is the stories of nanabojou. Not so much the actual stories, but the fact that he is their main mythological character and not worshipped like herakles or shiva or thor or gilgamesh were.
