4 out of 5 stars Not a Bad Choice for Homeschooling.......2002-07-11

Although I had trouble finding some of the materials in my household, I had most of them because we homeschool. The book says that most of the materials can be found in a typical classroom, but they are not always commonly found at home....however most of them are not too expensive to buy, especially if you get other parents together and do it as a group. Overall though, I found this to be an excellent book for preschoolers.

3 out of 5 stars giant book falls short.......2000-04-01

While the book has plenty to offer, there are many activities that require "every day items in your household" that just are not found in mine. Consequently for my 3 and 5 year old this is my least favorite book. I consider it a good addition to a few others I have and it is fun to pick out things to do each season, but if you can't afford to buy several books, don't make this your only pick. Please note the key words are in the title "more than 600". With that many you are bound to find something for the occasion. The book is easy to read, is well organized and has good instructions.

Goodheart and Willcox are, convincingly, experts in auto technology as well as excellent writers and illustrators. As a certified master auto and truck technician, I often refer my customers to this book for straightforward understandable explanations of the goings on under the hood. When my customer understands how a system operates, he or she is more willing to accept a diagnosis, because it makes sense and the black magic attitude is gone. The automotive encyclopedia has been available since the 70's and each addition is packed with the latest developments that the car manufactures employ to make cars more, fun, economical, and, necessarily, more complex. Goodheart and Willcox are to be congratulated on this and past editions of this wonderful reference guide. Just wonderful.

            Book Description

While information technology has had a definite impact on education and training, the potential it offers for the teaching process remains largely untapped. The Encyclopaedia of Educational Media Communications and Technology addresses the need for a comprehensive information source that will continue to serve the needs of the educational community. This completely revised second edition offers educators, trainers, and administrators the opportunity to evaluate a whole spectrum of new developments in educational media communications and technology. It brings the reader up to date on major innovations, such as the increasingly ubiquitous microcomputer and the flexible, sophisticated communications capabilities that have become a reality since the encyclopaedia was first published ten years ago. The original material has been thoroughly updated, and more than thirty major topical entries have been added. Because of the proliferation of jargon that has accompanied each new technological advance, the editors have included approximately 1,500 short entries explaining terms that are likely to be encountered in an educational context. Entries have been contributed by more than seventy specialists in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. The second edition of this encyclopaedia will be an essential resource for the teachers, trainers, and decision-makers destined to play a role in integrating the new communications technologies into a modern educational framework.

                  Book Description

This Encyclopedia provides scholarly information on all aspects of Educational Technology. Educational Technology is seen as a problem-solving process, concerning most aspects of teaching and learning through media and technology, in the context of education and training. Problems may arise in subdomains of education, such as curriculum, instruction and learning, methods and media, or organization and management. In developing solutions, use will be made of many technologies in the narrower meaning of the word - educational aspects and applications of information and communication technology. A variety of education and institutional settings are presented as they determine potential solutions.

Entries are organized in five broad categories: (1) educational technology as a concept and as a field and how it is disseminated in different ways; (2) functions such as needs assessment, design, media production, evaluation, diffusion and implementation, as the design process is highly dependent on good organization, it also includes entries on management of educational technology and on resources frequently used by educational technologists; (3) strategies, techniques, materials and devices to deliver technology; (4) applications of educational technology in institutional settings; and (5) emerging issues in the field.

This volume includes entries from the highly acclaimed International Encyclopedia of Education, 2nd Edition (described by Choice as being "a premier resource when judged on virtually every criteria applied to a reference work"). Given the dynamic nature of the field, many of these entries have been revised and updated, and a number of new entries have been commissioned, giving a more complete coverage of the domain of educational technology. New entries include: Computer-supported Design for Computer-aided Instruction, Computer-based Curriculum Development and Job Aids.

In 2005, two tragedies--the Asian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina--turned CNN reporter Anderson Cooper into a media celebrity. Dispatches from the Edge, Cooper's memoir of "war, disasters and survival," is a brief but powerful chronicle of Cooper's ascent to stardom and his struggle with his own tragedies and demons. Cooper was 10 years old when his father, Wyatt Cooper, died during heart bypass surgery. He was 20 when his beloved older brother, Carter, committed suicide by jumping off his mother's penthouse balcony (his mother, by the way, being Gloria Vanderbilt). The losses profoundly affected Cooper, who fled home after college to work as a freelance journalist for Channel One, the classroom news service. Covering tragedies in far-flung places like Burma, Vietnam, and Somalia, Cooper quickly learned that "as a journalist, no matter ... how respectful you are, part of your brain remains focused on how to capture the horror you see, how to package it, present it to others." Cooper's description of these horrors, from war-ravaged Baghdad to famine-wracked Niger, is poignant but surprisingly unsentimental. In Niger, Cooper writes, he is chagrined, then resigned, when he catches himself looking for the "worst cases" to commit to film. "They die, I live. It's the way of the world," he writes. In the final section of Dispatches, Cooper describes covering Hurricane Katrina, the story that made him famous. The transcript of his showdown with Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu (in which Cooper tells Landrieu people in New Orleans are "ashamed of what is happening in this country right now") is worth the price of admission on its own. Cooper's memoir leaves some questions unanswered--there's frustratingly little about his personal life, for example--but remains a vivid, modest self-portrait by a man who is proving himself to be an admirable, courageous leader in a medium that could use more like him. --Erica C. Barnett

                  Book Description

In this gripping, candid, and remarkably powerful memoir, Anderson Cooper offers an unstinting, up-close view of the most harrowing crises of our time, and the profound impact they have had on his life.

After growing up on Manhattan's Upper East Side, Cooper felt a magnetic pull toward the unknown. If he could keep moving, and keep exploring, he felt he could stay one step ahead of his past, including the fame surrounding his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, and the deaths of his father and older brother. As a reporter, the frenetic pace of filing dispatches from war-torn countries, and the danger that came with it, helped him avoid having to look too closely at the pain and loss that was right in front of him.

But recently, during the course of one extraordinary, tumultuous year, it became impossible for him to continue to separate his work from his life. From the tsunami in Sri Lanka to the war in Iraq, the starvation in Niger, and ultimately Hurricane Katrina, Cooper gives us a firsthand glimpse of the devastation that takes place when the normal order is ruptured on such a massive scale. Cooper had been in his share of life-threatening situations before -- in Sarejevo, Somalia, and Rwanda -- but he had never seen human misery quite like this. Writing with vivid memories of his childhood and early career as a roving correspondent, Cooper reveals how deeply affected he has been by the wars, disasters, and tragedies he has witnessed, and why he continues to be drawn to some of the most perilous places on earth.

Anderson Cooper has written some heartwrenching stories, his feelings
that make me feel like I am with him. Revealing his own history,
clearing some of his baggage, makes one want to look into their own.

Hi, I am Rachael, using mom acount (sorry useless information). Anyway awesome book I'm finished with it and I just want to read it again it is so good! He put so much emotion into it and describe the event so well that you can picture everything as you read. For some reason my favorite part of the book that I read to my mom was when about at the end when he was talking about his brother and the question "were you close". Him talking about Katrina and how it affected him, I wouldn't harely put the book down. The book was never boring to me. I love the picture in the middle of the book too. That really cool to do I love the picture of his dad, if you didn't look at that well, you would of thought it was Anderson. He look so much like him and him describing his father passing away. There wasn't a bad thing about the book in my opinion, never boring, kept your attention and kept you reading. Best autobiography ever!

                  5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING .......2007-09-12

I remember watching the disaster that was Hurricane Katrina unfold on TV, I was stunned and couldn't believe it - untill I saw a correspondent on the verge of tears while trying to report what he had to witness, and finally losing it when a US senator tried to sugarcoat the tragedy just to look good on TV.
I had no idea who that reporter was but I remember cheering him on and thinking: Finally there's ONE reporter who doesn't think of his own career first but demands answers, ugly as they may be.

I admit I read a few reviews before I started writing my own one, and the two words that stick out are COMPASSION and COURAGE.
Compassion for the victims and their stories and the courage to tell it like it is and to demand honest answers, no matter who's toes you have to step on to get them.

Anderson Cooper may not realize it, but both traits are really rare these days and set him apart from most reporters - and they shine through every page of his book.
Reading about his family backround only makes him stand out more because given his family's wealth and fame he could easily have lived the meaningless, shallow life of one Paris Hilton...

Instead he chose a very difficult job, one which very few of us "normal" people would be able to stand.
(To be honest, even after reading his own words about the horrors he's experienced I have no idea how he manages keep going and to stay sane.)

After reading the book in one day (I just couldn't stop), if I had to summarize it in one word I'd say: IMPORTANT.
In the world we live in today, books like "Dispatches from the Edge" are important to remind us of what is happening beyond our own yards; and it's important to have people like Anderson Cooper out there, even if we sometimes prefer not to be confronted with the harsh reality.

                  5 out of 5 stars great read.......2007-08-25

no nonesense story of major events in 2005 told by a sensitive reporter. Very fast and insighful read. He does write like a reporter and can sometimes sound very much like his newscast at times but it's his interactions with the people he meets and his internalization of these events that makes the book. Would highly recommend it.
